OLD OYSTER FACTORY
WATERFRONT DINING
TheOld Oyster Factory was built on the site of an original oyster cannery. From 1925 until 1990’s, 1700 acres of nearby creeks and wetlands were harvested and their yield brought to a one-story concrete building located directly under the restaurant. After canning, the oysters were shipped all over the Lowcountry bearing the appellation of the Broad Creek Oyster Factory. Today, this iconic waterfront dining destination has stunning views of the Lowcountry on Broad Creek.
Voted one of the “Top 100 Scenic View Restaurants’’ and “Top 50 Kid Friendly Restaurants” in America by OpenTable, the Old Oyster Factory specializes in fresh seafood but includes landlubbers’ favorites such as filet mignon, ribeye and brick chicken. Their Sunday brunch menu can be enjoyed on the spacious back deck or dining rooms both with coastal views.
The addition of O.O.F., an expansive oyster bar, brings The
Old Oyster Factory back to its roots with shuckers at the bar for you to watch. This shuck-to-order bar offers a variety of oysters on the half shell from both local and various coastlines. “This place is like an old friend as it’s always inviting,” an online reviewer said. “Beautiful views along with fantastic, local tasty seafood, and can’t forget about those delicious hush puppies! Great happy hour as well.”
The back deck with an outside patio bar offers intimate sunset views while dining on the water. The unobstructed view of local wildlife are perfect for entertaining your little ones at the shoreline while waiting for your meal. Live music seasonally. Look for music schedule updates on their website.
From families, date nights to large parties and friendly gatherings there is an amazing dining experience for everyone.

REILLEY’S
GRILL & BAR
Thislocal favorite, family-owned and operated establishment has been serving up delicious steaks, seafood, pasta and sandwiches on Hilton Head Island since 1982. Reilley’s new menu items and specials, made with fresh seasonal ingredients, really shows off their culinary experience far beyond your average bar food.
As one reviewer states, “ We stayed a weekend on Hilton Head and ate at many great restaurants, but this was by far the best. The beer was COLD (very important) and food was great. I had the sesame salmon, by far the best. My boyfriend had the fish tacos. I wish I could remember our waiter’s name because he was very kind and quick. The food came fast and the price point was great for what we had. If we visit Hilton Head again, we will be back!”
With a sophisticated warm ambiance, family-friendly atmosphere, this Island institution is where you can enjoy nightly specials, mimosas at Sunday brunch or casual drinks and bar menu food with friends over a game on one of the many TVs. (Voted Island’s Best Sports Bar)

If you’re looking for a home-away-from-home style experience, stop in to Street Meet for lunch, dinner, or late night.
Featuring “Sidewalk Sandwiches from America’s Favorite Street Corners™” Street Meet specializes in homemade versions of regional American bar food. They were voted: People’s Choice Awards Best Bar 2015, Island’s Best Hot Dog.
It’s the place to go for the best wings, fish & chips, homemade soups, salads, and seafood. They also offer a vegetarian menu, power bowls, a $8 lunch menu, and happy hour & early bird specials.
A tasteful selection of American whiskey and Bourbon sits on their liquor shelves and American craft-brews are at the forefront of the beer they serve.
As a small business owned and operated by a sister-brother (and his wife) team, Street Meet feels there’s nothing more
American than their vision. They take pride in their connection with the veterans-assistance foundation, Honor our Heroes, and consistent charitable donations to the community in which we live. Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, owner Carey Basciano welcomes football fans and ex-patriots from Ohio to the home of the Cleveland Brown Backers. The NFL team issued a charter and the certificate hangs behind the bar. And with the help of a Backer Tracker app, fans looking for a great place to watch the Browns play find old and new friends at Street Meet. They expanded into the adjacent space in spring of 2016 and commissioned a colorful graffiti mural by well-known artist Blake Shockley. Street Meet offers live music and fund raising opportunities that give back to the community.
Looking to take a bit of Street Meet home with you? Take-out is available and they also offer local and Browns Backer apparel and online ordering.
Street Meet also caters. There are daily specials and a full bar. Continuous service from 11:30 a.m. Kitchen open late.

HINCHEY’S
CHICAGO BAR & GRILL
Home of the Notre Dame Club, the Pitt Club and the Sunset Rotary. Hinchey’s has been a locals’ favorite for twenty-five years on Hilton Head. Great place to relax, to talk, watch the game, and have a drink, sandwich or a meal. Their fried grouper sandwich is an area favorite. Their Tuesday night All-You-Can-Eat-Crab-Legs is not to be missed.
Family owned and operated since 1996, the spacious location in the Circle Center next to the new Celebration Park on Hilton Head Island has a great sports memorabilia display, with a private dining room for special events.
One recently satisfied customer had to say - “Hinchey’s was recommended to us by one of our neighbors and it did not disappoint. My husband’s club sandwich was huge and he said
Dine inside or out. Lunch and dinner is served seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Early dining specials from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Happy hour 4-7 p.m. seven days a week.
it was really good. I had the nachos and they were excellent. Huge serving and brought the rest home to enjoy later. Lots of locals make this their go to place to meet and share a few with theirs friends. The waiter greeted many of the couples by name and knew their drink orders. We will definitely go back.”
Though Hinchey’s has much in common with a sports bar, it is very much a restaurant and the perfect spot to meet family and friends for lunch or dinner. Their extensive menu has something for everyone, featuring Chicago specialties like Italian Beef Sandwich and local favorites including the Crab Cakes. Many vacationers make Hinchey’s their first stop on their return visits to Hilton Head Island and their last stop on their way home.

LUCKY ROOSTER
KITCHEN + BAR
Across the spectrum of great restaurants that call Hilton Head Island home, Lucky Rooster Kitchen + Bar stands apart from the pack. Gleefully dancing between fine dining and good old fashion Southern goodness, the guiding philosophy at Lucky Rooster has always been to simply take the comfort food you know and give it a culinary makeover.
“It’s still Southern American-inspired food, it’s just prepared in an elevated way that brings out the quality,” said owner David Leffew. “We focused on providing an amazing dining experience that is both fun and approachable.”
Lucky Rooster offers dinner Tuesday thru Sunday and brunch/lunch Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Kick off your weekend on Friday with a Lucky Mary and the famed Buffalo Chicken Benedict, a traditional French omelet with Gruyere or steak and eggs.
“We love the atmosphere here, especially with live music on the patio Wednesday, Friday, and twice on Sunday. With our new heated patio & outdoor bar there is plenty of space to sit and relax with a nice cocktail,” said Leffew.
Be sure to check out their website to follow them on Facebook and Instagram for upcoming events like ½ off Bottles of Wine on Tuesdays, Wine Wednesdays, Cigar Nights, and a live music schedule.

Locally owned and operated for more than 26 years, Phillys Cafe and Deli is a favorite lunchtime spot for locals and visitors on the south end of Hilton Head wanting a tried and true sandwich. Phillys’ motto is “Best sandwiches on the island…Period!”
Custom made sandwiches with bread baked fresh in house daily is a part of the success of this island institution. The pita wraps and salads are both imaginative and health conscious. Whether you decide to try the “Bompa” (Homemade chicken salad with bacon) or decide on the “Thanksgiving” (Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayo on your choice of bread) you can’t go wrong. Dine in or take out. Order a platter of sandwiches for your next party or get together!
A fan on their Facebook page said it best with:
“Soooooo good. The sandwiches are awesome. Forget jersey mikes and subway. This is the place to be. The bread is so fresh and soft. So good. Can’t wait till I’m working on the south end so I can’t eat there again!” You can’t find a bad review on Phillys’ page anywhere. A testament to what has kept them in biz for so long. Owner Erika Waronsky, who also owns The Sandbar restaurant next door, welcomes visitors and locals to the coffee shop, which opened in summer 2019. The café serves smoothies, breakfast, lunch and creative specials.
Many pair their drink with something sweet. Classic sticky buns - topped with brown sugar, cinnamon and nuts—are fantastic and homemade muffins, turnovers and donuts also tempt. Many of Carolina Coffe & Crumbs’ baked goods are offered from Baker’s Pride, a family-owned bakery in
Savannah. A full breakfast menu is available. Other options include fluffy omelets and savory quiches.
For lunch, try a panini made with lots of avocado, sun-dried tomatoes, portabella mushroom, feta cheese and pesto on rustic Italian bread. The chicken salad, made of tender chicken breast mixed with mayo, honey, dried cranberries, celery, and pecans can be served in a wrap, croissant or salad.
In good weather, sit outside under an umbrella on the petfriendly patio. Inside the café is a children’s corner with a chalk board, toys and books.
The restaurants also serves a selection of mimosas, Bloody Marys, wine and coffee cocktails.

CRANE'S TAVERN
A FAMILY TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
Crane’s
Tavern and Steakhouse on Hilton Head Island has a pedigree that goes back for more than a century. Frank Crane, an immigrant from Ireland, founded Crane’s Tavern in Philadelphia in 1908 and ran it until forced to close during Prohibition.
After the restaurant reopened in 1933, his sons and a grandson continued to operate the tavern into the 1970s. His son Hank worked at the original tavern until 1969, when he opened a Crane’s Tavern north of Philadelphia, then bought and renamed the Surf City Hotel on Long Beach Island, N.J.
In April 1999, Hank and his daughter Beth-Anne Crane, great-granddaughter of the founder, opened the restaurant on Hilton Head. More than two decades later it remains a go-to
destination for lovers of steak, seafood and fine wines.
Crane’s serves only USDA Prime grade beef, including its famous prime rib, as well as a wide array of fresh fish, seafood and pasta dishes, including jumbo lump crab cakes, sashimigrade tuna steaks, Lowcountry shrimp, lobster tail and more.
The extensive selection of wines, both domestic and international, received an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine. With its crisp white tablecloths, old-English bar and rich, warm, heart-of-pine floors, the tavern is known for its cozy, comfortable, casual atmosphere and outstanding service.
“It is our desire to offer our customers an experience in prime,” say the owners.

“On a two-week vacation to Hilton Head this is the one place we always go at least twice. Why? The seafood is always fresh and perfectly prepared,” an online reviewer said. “The atmosphere is cozy, definitely unpretentious, and casual.”
Room for dessert? Try three varieties of key lime pie or a sweet potato cheesecake.
“Unanimous choice for best seafood on our trip,” an online reviewer said. “In fact, one of our kids made three visits (once just for the key lime pie). Reasonably priced, super casual and very good quality.”

ALEXANDER’S
RESTAURANT & WINE BAR
Alexander’s
Restaurant & Wine Bar, locally owned and operated since 1977, is an upscale seafood restaurant featuring locally caught seafood and many locally sourced ingredients.
Seasonal menus are introduced which pay tribute to many classic Lowcountry and Alexander’s favorites such as Shrimp and Grits and Wiener Schnitzel.
Because of the intimate, elegant atmosphere, along with the stunning views of Palmetto Dunes’ 11-mile lagoon, Alexander’s is the perfect choice for any occasion whether simple or formal.
The most delicious food on the island is at Alexander’s, according to an online reviewer.
“Some of the best food we’ve had on Hilton Head Island,” the review said. “Service was friendly and impeccable. We will definitely
go back next time we are on Hilton Head.”
Locals and visitors alike also continuously enjoy Alexander’s extensive wine list and great cocktails— the Honeyed Sazerac is a must-try. Alexander’s offers wine dinners featuring wonderful wine, spectacular food and lively conversation, as well as monthly cooking demonstrations with their culinary staff.
Entertaining for a private party? Alexander’s is the perfect lagoonside setting for your private celebration, corporate luncheon or large group.
When the restaurant is closed for regular business, Alexander’s offers private parties with seating for a maximum of 120 guests not including the private dining room or bar area.
There is also a porch dining area with a lagoon view offering seating of up to 40 guests.

And for many longtime customers, it is - and they often celebrate life’s milestones there: private parties, wedding rehearsal dinners, corporate parties. It’s a family affair. New owners, Kirk and Heather Saleme from Pennsylvania, with their 14-year restaurant experience are on hand to roll out the welcome mat and ensure that you have the best dining experience that previous owners Chad and Kathy created for over 18 years.
The Sea Grass Grille has been named “Favorite Seafood Restaurant” for nine years by readers of Hilton Head Monthly. Seasonal daily specials feature local favorites like soft shell crabs, Bluffton oysters, cobia, and more. Those looking for something besides seafood also will be happy. House specialties include veal scaloppini, filet mignon, and breast of duck. The menu also offers vegetarian and gluten-free options.
The dessert menu was voted “Favorite Dessert Menu” and it includes Baked Alaska and Chef Chad’s Daily creations.
Wine is an integral part of the dining experience at Sea Grass Grille. The wine list has won an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator and features varietals from top producing regions in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

JVZ BONEZ AMERICANA BAR AND GRILL
With the NFL season heating up, the NHL and NBA coming into focus and an odd winter World Cup, sports fans have more event multi-tasking than ever.
JVZ BONEZ Americana Bar and Grill at Bridge Center in Bluffton has the ultimate solution for fanatics. They feature a wall with over 500 inches of ways to watch the big game.
“We can put eight different requested games on these bad boys, or we can combine them to show one big event,” said the BONEZ part of the equation, bar manager Anthony Barone. “It is a sports
junkie’s paradise, because Johnny and me, we’re both sports addicts ourselves.”
Johnny is John Van Zuylen, the JVZ in the restaurant’s name.
“You’re going to get an epic viewing spot and a menu elevated with all kinds of personal touches. It’s not your typical bar food,” he said. “We wanted to create a haven and a sports lovers’ family here. The bigger the game, the more we shine.”

Jake Higgins, owner of Highway 21 Drive-In, said he’s acquired Stir Crazy of Bluffton. The eatery is located next to Best Buy off Fording Island Road. “Stir Crazy is a gem if you like authentic Asian inspired foods that gives you choice of culture in a chill but classy environment,” Higgins said.
COMEDY MAGIC CABARET IS GOOD, CLEAN FUN
By Tim WatsonKerry Pollock walks on stage at Comedy Magic Cabaret on Hilton Head Island like he built the place — because he did. Pollock’s passion for both comedy and magic lured him away from his original career as an engineer, one gig at a time.
Pollock is gifted at crafting jokes and illusions — and the settings where performers present them. His half-bowl, 88-seat club in the South Island Square shopping center feels like a classic jazz club; there’s not a bad seat in the house. Corporate events, private parties and celebrations of life have taken place in this homey, intimate space. In addition to setting the stage for laughter and amazement on Hilton Head, Pollock has built stages and performance spaces for others in the entertainment industry.
Audiences at Comedy Magic Cabaret have grown about 20% since the club opened, as word spread across the Lowcountry and beyond about Pollock’s “Funny Not Filthy” entertainment. Much of the credit for the club’s success belongs to his wife, Kelly, who is a breath of fresh air, tirelessly working the front and back of the house. Many guests become repeat customers — and close friends of the couple.
Friends and fans are quick to sing Pollock’s praises. Among them are Rich and Janice Ross, who have also seen him perform at The Magic Castle nightclub in Hollywood.
“The other comics told us that no one interacts with an audience better than Kerry,” Rich Ross said.
As Hilton Head guests enjoy the show, they can also order food and drinks — Comedy Magic Cabaret serves simple Southern cuisine with a twist: pork and chicken sliders, paninis, and a variety of desserts. Signature cocktails include The Daufuskie Hurricane and Kelly’s Favorite. The menu also includes a wide selection of beer, wine and soft drinks.
The Pollocks recently upped the magic with a new addition to the club, an intimate “Backstage” Close-Up magic show seating only 12-16 guests for a unique personal experience. They will also be offering the same aboard their 61’ yacht “MAGIC”. An optional upgrade includes a pre-show dolphin cruise with hosts Kerry and Kelly.
Comedy Magic Cabaret is located in South Island Square, 843 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island. When facing the shopping center, Lucky Rooster Kitchen + Bar is in the front left corner and Comedy Magic Cabaret is in the back right. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. and shows start at 8 p.m.; for just a few extra dollars comedy fans can sit a little closer to the stage to increase their chances of becoming “volunteers” during a performance.

beaches ofHILTON HEAD ISLAND
Sands. Surfing. Swimming. Sunning. Shores. Sailing. Sanctuary. Whatever your vision of the “beach life” may entail, the sun-splashed beaches of Hilton Head Island offer as many experiences as there are shells on their sandy shores. From its heel to its toe, here’s an overview of some of the island’s popular beaches and hidden gems.
1. SOUTH BEACH Best For: Unique water sports opportunities (kayaking, sport fishing, parasailing, etc.), sightseeing and walking. Located in Sea Pines at the “toe” of the island near the South Beach Marina. This beach is relatively quiet, nearly secluded, and is great for just watching the dolphins or a relaxing walk. If you are not a Sea Pines resident or registered guest, you must pay $9 per vehicle to enter the resort. Access: Near Sea Pines South Beach Marina, best accessed by bike or foot.
2. SOUTH FOREST BEACH Best For: Swimming, fishing, biking and walking. South Forest Beach is on a one-mile stretch of beachfront between the Coligny Circle and Sea Pines Plantation gate. It is the largest of the island’s public beaches and draws more crowds than North Forest Beach. Wide, comfortable and spacious, and buffered somewhat from nearby development, it’s a great all-purpose spot. Access: Public access on Alder Lane and Seaside Villas, off South Forest Beach Road.
3. COLIGNY BEACH Best For: Everybody. Perfect for sunbathing, swimming, biking, an early-morning jog or a romantic date night. At Hilton Head’s busiest beach you’ll find soft sand and wonderful clean water. Even better, it’s close to the island’s unofficial downtown area. Visitors can enjoy free Wi-Fi, volleyball nets, scores of beach rentals and free parking — park at the beach parking, not Coligny Plaza. The beach and the shopping plaza do get a little crowded, but if you like an active and lively beach experience, this is your spot. Access: At Coligny Circle, at the intersection of Pope Avenue and South Forest Beach Drive.
4. NORTH FOREST BEACH
Best For: Swimming, walking and surfing. Located near over 100 dining and shopping options in one of the island’s oldest neighborhoods. For surfers, the beach area at Jacana Street is known to offer some of the best waves at high tide on the island. Locals swear by the shoreline as the best on Hilton Head. Access: The one-mile stretch of beach starts at Coligny Circle and runs north to the Sonesta Resort located in Shipyard Plantation.
5. BURKES BEACH
Best For: Surfing, boarding, walking and pets. Located to the northern side of Chaplin Community Park, Burke’s Beach is adjacent to Singleton Beach, divided by the natural folly field. The beach offers seasonal lifeguards and limited parking, but boasts some of the best waves for surfing and boarding. The dog park at Chaplin Park is a nice touch and makes it a great destination for a bark-and-beach day with man’s best friend. Access: Just south of Palmetto Dunes at the end of Burkes Beach Road.
6. DRIESSEN BEACH Best For: Day trips, swimming, sunning, locals and in-the-know. A long boardwalk connects the maritime forest to the white-sand beach. A long, wide shoreline leaves ample room to spread out, and the flat ocean floor and small waves make it kid-friendly and great for body boarding or just wading. Tucked in a heavily shaded and wooded area, it’s a bit hard to find, but with tons of amenities like parking and restrooms. Access: Off William Hilton Parkway, at the end of Bradley Beach Road.
7. FOLLY FIELD BEACH Best for: Surfers, walking and biking. A bit off the beaten path from the plantations and resorts, Folly Field has more of a locals’ beach feel. It is both convenient and quiet. Take a long walk and grab a pit stop and a drink at the outdoor bar at the nearby The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa. Access: Located on Starfish Road off Folly Field Road.
8. ISLANDER’S BEACH Best for: Locals and swimming. A favorite of locals, Islander’s Beach recently earned a high ranking in Coastal Living magazine’s Top 21 Beaches on the East Coast. It’s less crowded than most Hilton Head spots and swimmer-friendly, thanks to its gentle underwater slope. Parking is at a premium and is mostly reserved for residents and year-round pass holders. Access: Located at 94 Folly Field Road, at Sparkleberry Ln.
9. HISTORIC MITCHELVILLE FREEDOM PARK Best for: Walking, birdwatching & fishing. The public beach access at this historic site is located on the “heel” of the island. It boasts 31 acres of mostly untouched nature, feels like your own private beach and is arguably the scene for the best bird watching in all of Hilton Head. The beach itself is a generous walk from the park. Access: Near the end of Beach City Road.
10. FISH HAUL CREEK BEACH PARK Best For: Privacy, fishing, walking. Many locals consider this beach Hilton Head’s best-kept secret. Adjacent to Barker’s Field, this beach park (formerly Mitchelville Beach Park) was recently renamed. It’s not for swimming, but is great for beach-combing, hunting for sharks’ teeth and digging for clams. Access: Near the end of Beach City Road, on Mitchelville Road.
ACTIVITIES ABOUND FOR EVERYBODY IN THE
Lowcountry
Blessed with natural beauty, sandy beaches and a temperate climate, it’s no wonder that Hilton Head Island has earned a reputation as one of the most popular vacation destinations in the United States. The island and nearby Bluffton offer many opportunities for all ages to have fun vacation memories.
BY SLOAN KELLYHere are a few of the area’s “don’t miss” activ ities:
• Climb to the top of the iconic lighthouse in Harbour Town for spectacular views of Harbour Town Golf Links, the Harbour Town Yacht Basin and Calibogue Sound. Need to catch your breath as you climb the 114 steps? Displays lining the stairs document the island’s rich natural history. the island’s rich natural history.
• Bike the island’s paved leisure trails. Rated as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the American League of Bicyclists, Hilton Head is the ideal place to spin your wheels thanks to more than 60 miles of multi-use trails stretch ing from one end of the island to the other.
• Enjoy myriad adventures at Adventure Hilton Head. Soar through the air with seven zip lines on the course that offer a beautiful view of Hilton Head. Climb trees on a highropes challenge courses or race friends on the GoKart track.
• Get to know the local scene by enjoying our many festivals, which take place almost
every weekend and feature live entertainment, arts and crafts and, of course, food and drink.
INDOOR FUN
• See a movie. The two largest movie theaters are Northridge Cinema 10 on Hilton Head and Cinemark Bluffton. Northridge offers 10 screens, all with reclining seats. Hilton Head also is home to Park Plaza Cinema and Coligny Theatre. Park Plaza is an independent theater with a bar and the owners bring their dogs to work. Coligny is a single-screen theater that shows mostly art house movies. With 12 screens, Cinemark Bluffton is the largest the ater in the area.
• Lace up your bowling shoes for a day at Station 300 in Bluffton, which offers 33,000 square feet of bowling, arcade games and food. The bumpers can pop up to protect less expe rienced players from gutter balls, and then go back down when the family champion is up. If you work up an appetite, enjoy a menu of sandwiches, burgers and pizza.
• Play some arcade games. Adventure Cove Mini Golf & Arcade on Hilton Head features air hockey, video games and a creative and well-maintained mini golf course. Before you leave, be sure to trade your tickets in for some fun swag.
FOR YOUNGER KIDS
• Play at The Sandbox: An Interactive Children’s Museum. Kids can sit in a real airplane cockpit, climb on a ship, explore the builder’s section, or create a masterpiece in the art room. Located on the island at Lowcountry Celebration Park (Pope Ave.) and Bluffton (Tanger 2 Outlets) The Sandbox is the perfect stop for toddlers and preschool ers.
• Adventure Playground at Celebration Park. Lowcountry Celebration Park features a large reimagined Adventure Playground Ship, complete with climbing nets and mist cannons. The playground includes a wading pool.
• Engaging adventures at the library. The library system offers activities, from (interactive) Story Time to short mov ies.
THE NATURAL WORLD
• Visit the Coastal Discovery Museum, one of the most memorable destinations on Hilton Head Island. Explore natural history and cultural heritage on the 68-acre Honey Horn property. The museum’s trails, gardens, live oaks, butterfly enclosure and horses are just a few of the fun experiences you will encounter during your visit.
• Hike and birdwatch on Pinckney Island . Located between the bridges onto Hilton Head Island, Pinckney Island is a national wildlife refuge. Travel down its wide, well-maintained pathways to watch blue crabs skitter across coastal mud flats in between tides. Observe blue herons, snowy egrets and other birds as they soar and roost in the trees in and around a secluded pond.
ON HORSEBACK
• At Lawton Stables, mount a well-trained horse for a ride through the scenic Sea Pines Forest Preserve. Lawton Stables also offers pony rides, a small animal farm and a horse-themed gift store.
ON THE WATER
• Take a guided kayak or stand-up paddle board tour through salt marsh estuaries, where if you’re lucky you’ll spot bald eagles, hawks and osprey.
• Watch bottlenose dolphins play in the Atlantic Ocean or in the Atlantic Ocean or in the Intracoastal Waterway during sightseeing tours on motorized boats of all sizes. Pontoon boats, catamarans, center consoles and even sailboats offer excursions, and while they don’t guarantee you’ll see dolphins, the odds are in your favor.
• Catch (and maybe release) a big one. Local charters specialize on inshore, nearshore and offshore fishing around Hilton Head Island. Anglers can catch a variety of species throughout the year, including redfish, cobia, speckled sea trout, flounder and sharks.
HISTORY AND CULTURE
• Visit the historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. Before the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, a group of escaped slaves, considered “contraband of war” by the occupying Union Army, were granted a plot of land where they created their own town. The Mitchelville Preservation Project is dedicated to pre serving and sharing the triumphant story of the first self-governed settlement of freedmen in the U.S. and the site is amazing lesson in our nation’s history.
• Reserve a tour at the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head. Since 2003, the nonprofit museum has been committed to maintaining Gullah customs, traditions, language, stories, songs and structures in the Lowcountry. The preserved Little House is a quiet, haintblue cottage just off Gumtree Road, built in the early 1950s before a bridge connected the island to the mainland. The muse um hosts events and educational seminars throughout the year.
FOR OLDER KIDS
• Solve mysteries at an escape room. Are you a secret sleuth? Do you love solving puzzles? If so, try out one of the three escape rooms in the area. Work to solve the puzzles before time runs out. The puzzles may prove to be difficult for the little ones, so this activity is suggested for ages 12 and older.
ART
• Hilton Head Island is renowned for its arts scene. See a professional performance at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, where musicals, plays, dances and national comedy acts take the stage regularly. Or channel your inner artist with a few class es at the Art League of Hilton Head Academy, working with talented local artists in all media and all skill levels. There are also day-long and multi-day courses at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina that run the gamut from visual arts to performing and dance. For a fun souvenir, head over to the Art Cafe, located across the street from Coligny Plaza and paint your own pottery.
FOR THE ADULTS
• Try local spirits. Head over to Hilton Head Distillery for some adult fun. Take a tour and taste the locally distilled white, dark and spiced rum. If rum isn’t your drink of choice, try the smooth vodka.
• Create your own brewery tour — but be sure to designate a driver or plan on calling an Uber or taxi.
• Sip and savor. If wine is more your speed, stop by Island Winery and try out some local wines. The tasting rooms offers wine and cheese pairings.
• Relax at a spa. Take this opportunity for a pampering session. There are many spas on the island offering everything from hot stone massages to couples’ massage. Relax and rejuvenate.

Tennis Titan
BY HILTON HEAD MONTHLY | PHOTO BY RITTERBECK PHOTOGRAPHYLEGEND STAN SMITH EARNS LOCAL, STATE ACCOLADES
Stan Smith has enjoyed a decorated tennis career. The Hilton Head Island resident, a former No. 1 player, won the U.S. Open in 1971 and Wimbledon in 1972.
He won 39 singles titles and 61 doubles titles. He also founded, with B.J. Stearns, the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy, which has developed young tennis players for 20 years.
Smith’s accomplishments were recently recognized by local and state officials.
The Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island dedicated its new outdoor pavilion to Stan and Margie Smith as “Club Champions” in honor of their long-standing commitment to the Club’s mission to serve those in need.
Stan Smith joined the board in 1994 and has led several key capital campaigns. He and his wife have been co-hosting the Club’s annual gala for more than 20 years.
“We are extremely grateful to have Stan and Margie in our corner,” said Kim Likins, Club director. “Their tireless commitment to making sure our young Members have bright futures is truly remarkable.”
The new pavilion is used as an optional space for learning and socializing, as well as a place to host events.
Smith was also honored by state Gov. Henry McMaster. During a ceremony held by the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island celebrating the 50th anniversary of Smith winning the 1972 Wimbledon title and being ranked the top tennis player, McMaster presented Smith with the Order of the Palmetto. The award is the state’s highest civilian honor presented in recognition of a lifetime of extraordinary achievement and service.
“Mr. Smith is known around the world as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, but in South Carolina, he is known for his long list of charitable work,” said McMaster. “Mr. Smith has dedicated himself to giving back to the Hilton Head Community and promoting Hilton Head through the game of tennis. He exemplifies what it means to be an Order of Palmetto recipient. We thank him for his commitment to serving his community and South Carolina.”
The award surprised Smith.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude to have been nominated by the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island for the Order of the Palmetto and to have Governor McMaster here to personally present this prestigious award to me,” said Smith, whose career highlights include representing the U.S. in the Davis Cup for 10 years and winning the championship seven times. “The entire evening was a night I’ll remember and cherish for a long time.”
Smith is also the spokesperson for the Club’s annual Fund-A-Need appeal, which took place during the event. The event featured special guests, including former Olympian and Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fame Alumna Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Todd Martin, president of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
More than 200 people attended the event in support of the Club’s mission and his career.
“Our gratitude for all that Stan has done for our Club kids through the years is beyond measurable,” Likins said.

DAUFUSKIE time
GET AWAY FOR A DAY ACROSS THE WATER
BY JUSTIN JARRETT | PHOTOS COURTESY OF HAIG POINTJust a couple of miles across Calibogue Sound from Harbour Town lies Daufuskie Island, a small, largely undeveloped barrier island.
A 45-minute ferry ride up the Intracoastal Waterway whisks visitors back in time when, depositing them on Daufuskie — accessible only by boat — and a world away from the trappings of modern-day life.
Daufuskie, steeped in history and drenched in natural beauty, is divided into two distinct worlds — the private Haig Point community, where cars are prohibited and residents access top-notch amenities by golf cart or bicycle, and the rest of the island, virtually undisturbed for decades. Native American artifacts are frequently unearthed on the island’s beaches, including arrowheads and pieces of centuries-old pottery.
Haig Point is mostly for members only, but the club does rent rooms in the historic Strachan Mansion and the Haig Point Lighthouse (rumored to be “eternally occupied” by Maggie, the former keeper’s daughter). A horseback ride via Daufuskie Island Trail Rides, one of the few places in the country where you can still ride horses on the beach, is always a unique experience. Living here also means a chance to play a round on the club’s renowned Rees Jones signature golf course.
On weekends during the summer, Freeport is the place to be: It’s where visitors hop off the ferry and gather to eat and drink at the Old Daufuskie Crab Company, dance the day away to live music, play cornhole, and hit the public beach that looks across Calibogue Sound toward Hilton Head. The area near the marina is something of a town center, with a general store, a few cottages for rent, and a handful of shops.
The main mode of transportation is via a golf cart or bike — which are perfect to explore the island. And there’s plenty to explore along Daufuskie’s dirt roads.
A number of unique galleries dot the island. Most notable among them is the Iron Fish Gallery, where Daufuskie Island resident Chase Allen — who has sold more than $1 million worth of art — produces metalworks in an open-air studio and accepts payments on the honor system when he isn’t present at the gallery. Daufuskie is a haven for art lovers, inlcluding Daufuskie Blues — located in the famed Mary Fields School, where author Pat Conroy taught in the 1960s — where organic indigo harvested on the island is used to create stunning and unique fashions.
The school is also home to School Grounds Coffee, but if you are looking for something a little stronger the island will oblige. Silver Dew Winery is a great spot for a tasting. There’s the museum inside the old Bloody Point Lighthouse and Daufuskie Island Rum Company, where its locally distilled spirits have been served to visitors from every U.S. state and 64 countries. The distillery is located next to a quaint pond, where visitors sometimes enjoy a picnic lunch.
If you’re not the do-it-yourself type, you can book one of a number of tours, including one led by Daufuskie native Sallie Ann Robinson, who was Conroy’s star pupil in “The Water Is Wide.”
Life on Daufuskie isn’t for everyone, and its full-time residents have a saying: “We’re all here because we’re not all there.”
BLUFFTON
Small Town Big Reputation
Bluffton is booming. The town has grown from one square mile when it was first incorporated to 54 square miles today. The town’s development exploded, bringing business and families to the Lowcountry — and it gave Bluffton its own identity.
There are shopping centers along U.S. 278, schools and athletic fields along McCracken Circle and dining and entertainment keep Calhoun Street and the Promenade vibrant. Even though Bluffton is growing, it is still a small town, with a neighborly feel. You’ll know your neighbors. You’ll enjoy their company and enjoy peace of mind.
The restaurants offer an eclectic mix of options, from fresh seafood to pub fare. The town serves some of the freshest dishes in the Lowcountry.
Old Town is still the place to explore. A unique spot for a variety of experiences, Old Town features artisan shops, art galleries and fantastic eateries.
Old Town also includes the pre-Civil War Church of the Cross and the antebellum Heyward House. The Bluffton state of mind is real, and we love it.

JVZ BONEZ
AMERICANA BAR AND GRILL
Thedream was born working late-night shifts together at One Hot Mama’s. John Van Zuylen, a former manager at Wild Wing Café, OHM and R Bar known to friends as JVZ, found the match to realize the dream in longtime SERG Group bar manager Anthony Barone, aka Bonez.
“He’s a younger, cooler, faster version of me,” Van Zuylen said of his partner at JVZ BONEZ Americana Bar and Grill, the yearold sports-focused, family-friendly restaurant.
“I’m not a trained chef, but my family told me for years the things I cook at home should be on a menu somewhere,” he said. “I cooked so much during the pandemic that I realized I could personalize a menu and make it special.”
His meatless lasagna is named for his daughter, Ava, who helped design the menu.
The Johnny Daddy Fries (potato medallions with bacon, cheese and ranch), are the 12-year-old’s all-time favorite.
“It’s one of the biggest joys of my life to design this with and for her.”

Friday & Saturday 11:45am – 1:30am Sunday 11:45am – 10:30pm
open late Thurs – Sat
Nothing more heartfelt comes out of the kitchen than the Greek chicken souvlaki pita wrap that JVZ made at least once a week for his wife Angela, who passed away in July after a long battle with cancer.
The space’s centerpiece is a wall of eight 70-inch TVs that can show eight separate games or show a big event. There are 28 large screens total, spread across the 4,500-square-foot layout that includes a private back room perfect for meetings and fantasy drafts.
Combine that with trivia, bingo, karaoke, an outdoor patio and occasional live music and you have a place for sports nuts from every fan base.
“There’s nothing like this around here, I guarantee you that,” Barone said. “This is a spot for everyone. John’s a Redskins guy, I’m an Eagles guy, but we love all teams, all sports. Any game you want on, you got it.”
