Food Psych 101 GET THE SKINNY ON HOW, WHAT AND WHY YOU EAT BY ROBYN PASSANTE
I
n the fight against fat, there are those who count calories and those who count carbs. But what really counts, says local wellness counselor Erin Risius, is the what, how and why we eat. “Often people are so immersed in the dieting that they’ve lost the joy of eating because they’re so stressed out about eating ‘right,’” said Risius, who teaches a weekly class at Hilton Head Health centered on the relationship we have with food. “There’s this morality to their food choices. When they eat what they term is a bad food, what happens internally is they think, I’m bad for eating this food.” Breaking that cycle of self-loathing, rigid self-control and binge eating takes hard work and mindfulness, Risius said. “There has to be a readiness for change. You have to want to explore your life and figure out what’s up.” When you are ready, Risius has plenty of tips for how to properly nourish your body and your mind.
6 yourlocalhealthchoice.com
Address The ‘What’
An involved Stanford University study recently showed virtually no difference in weight loss between those following a low-carb diet and those following a low-calorie diet. Risius has her clients strive for a more visual approach to balancing their meals, where half of a 9-inch plate contains plants, onequarter has whole grains and one-quarter features lean protein. “I also like the 80/20 guideline, where 80 percent of the time I’m eating in a healthful, controlled way, and 20 percent of the time I’m not,” she said. “In that 20 percent, I’m factoring in my glass of wine, or my chocolate, so we can be flexible within our structured intent of our eating.” Helping clients make more healthy, structured choices right off the bat kick-starts the desire to make more longlasting changes to the way they think about food. “Their mood improves, their energy improves, and often they have a little weight loss — and from there, that tends to spark the energy to dig a little deeper,” Risius said.

Think About The ‘How’ “The ‘how’ has to do with mindful eating. Even if we’re eating healthy foods, we could be overeating them,” Risius said. The trick, she said, is to slow down the pace of your eating, pay attention to what different foods feel like in your body, and try to reconnect with your hunger and satiety cues. “Often people are disconnected from their appetite cues because they’re immersed in a chaotic eating pattern at home,” she says. They’re skipping meals, and then eating too much at night. And then the next morning, they skip breakfast and the cycle begins again.
Understand The ‘Why’ Eating when you’re not actually hungry is common. “People know that they’re not physically hungry, but the urge to eat is so, so strong because of the emotional response it gives,” she said. “Food can be a companion. Often, food is someone’s most intimate relationship — it’s reliable, it doesn’t talk back, and it’s always there when you need it.” Understanding what the food is in response to — for example, loneliness or boredom — is the first step in creating a redirecting strategy. “Think about how you can really nourish that deeper need. What do you really need right now? Food is a false fix,” Risius said. “It’s about doing something else first, even for 10 or 15 minutes. At least it’s a step, that we’re interrupting the thought-impulse-action (for food). We’re kind of doing a time out.” And remember, as with any habit you try to break, it takes time and consistency to make a real lifestyle change. So if after your redirect activity you end up reaching for a cookie, it’s still considered a win — particularly if you used to eat the whole bag of them. “I want insight to translate to action, but when it comes to eating psychology, that insight in the beginning is not necessarily going to translate to what people feel is the right action,” Risius said. “It’s going to move the needle to what is the right action, but it’s a process.” H&W

Fighting a Foreign Invasion CHILDREN’S IMMUNE SYSTEMS DEVELOP FROM BIRTH BY DEAN ROWLAND
N
o one likes to have a cold — the runny nose, the sneezing, the sore throat. Adults can expect to get the sniffles, plus a few other minor illnesses, a couple of times a year, but kids will probably suffer a little more. Kids get sick more frequently than adults because their immune systems are still developing, experts say. “Human beings live in a world teeming with micro-organisms,” said Dr. Alicia Salyer, a board-certified pediatrician at Palmetto Pediatrics, which has offices in Bluffton and on Hilton Head Island. “We could not survive without a highly effective system of defense.” The body’s immune system has two distinct components: innate, the defenses we are born with, and adaptive, which strengthens as we’re exposed to more bacteria and viruses. Skin is the first line of defense in the innate immune system, which is comprised of a variety of cells and enzymes. Phagocytes, or white blood cells, are the first to attack and kill invading bacteria. Antibodies are the key component 8 yourlocalhealthchoice.com
in the adaptive immune system, which are proteins that recognize foreign bacteria or viruses. “Antibodies are small Y-shaped proteins that attack a foreign bacteria or virus by binding it and preventing it from damaging cells or stimulating its removal by other parts of the immune system,” said Salyer, who has been at Palmetto Pediatrics for 15 years and also is the mother of twin fifth-graders. “Vaccines work by harnessing the power of our own immune system. When you receive a vaccine, you are exposing your body to either dead or weakened bacteria or virus that can’t multiply or infect your own cells. Your body will develop your own antibodies.” Even though infants are born with their own innate immune systems, thanks to the antibodies they get from their mothers through pregnancy and breast feeding, they’re on their own after about six months. Just like adults, they’ll be susceptible to the viruses and bacteria that can enter the body through the mouth, eyes, nose and broken skin. Parents can help their children
boost their immune systems by making sure tots get enough sleep, Salyer said, adding that stress can increase vulnerability to infection. “Sleep needs vary by age,” she said. “Young children need 10 to 12 hours of sleep at night, and school-aged children typically need about 10 hours.” It’s also important for children to wash their hands often to prevent infection and to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables — but Salyer doesn’t recommend vitamin supplements if kids’ everyday diets offer sufficient nutrients. For parents who might be wondering if kids who play in the dirt or live in a house with a pet have stronger immune systems than those who don’t, here’s Salyer’s take: “Kind of. (It’s) a very interesting theory. The hygiene hypothesis is a theory that decreasing infection rates are contributing to increasing allergies and autoimmune diseases. Early life exposure to a variety of microorganism appears to help prevent the development of some illness such as asthma and inflammatory bowel disease.” H&W

According to a recent study by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, smokers are at a greater risk for hearing loss. Many cases of hearing loss are not reversible, so awareness and prevention are your best tools for taking care of your hearing. In addition to quitting smoking, experts suggest these tips to protect your hearing: • Avoid listening to music at high volume while wearing headphones. Experts recommend listening to music at just 60 percent volume, as maximum volume can be higher than 100 decimals. • Distance yourself from noise. Either avoid environments with high-decibel noise or bring earplugs when you know you’ll be in loud situations.
Experts offer tips to help you stand up for your health
Excessive sitting has been tied to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, spinal issues and muscle degeneration. Here are some tips to get on your feet at work: • Track your time. Figure out how long you sit each day and get up for a few minutes at least once an hour. • Stand and deliver. Get a standing desk, or try standing while on the phone. • Stride smart. Walk to a nearby park during lunch; take the stairs; walk to a water dispenser that’s farthest away from your desk. • Extend and elongate. Reaching up and out, extending your legs or bending to lengthen your spine can help alleviate muscle tension.

Red Cross planning local blood drives
The American Red Cross has an urgent need for donations from all blood types. The process from the time you arrive until you leave takes about an hour. The donation itself takes about 8-10 minutes on average. Donors should be prepared to show a photo ID and, during a private interview, answer a few questions about their health history and places they’ve traveled. Donors will have their temperature, pulse, blood pressure and hemoglobin levels checked. For more information about upcoming local blood drives, call 843-757-7437 or go to redcrossblood.org.

Come Home Healthy DON’T MAKE SICKNESS THE SOUVENIR FROM YOUR NEXT VACATION BY ROBYN PASSANTE
I
f vacations are supposed to be a healthy way to relax, recharge and enhance our lives through new experiences, then why do so many people come home sick? The phenomenon of people falling ill just after vacation isn’t a myth: A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that up to 21 percent of airline passengers report catching a cold within a week of traveling. While it’s easy for germophobes to blame the close confines of an airplane or their fellow travelers for the spread of bugs and viruses, there are ways we can stay healthy while traveling. Because ending your vacation with an illness is not the kind of souvenir anyone wants to bring home.
14 yourlocalhealthchoice.com
Keep up your routine
“I think when people travel, they get out of their normal routines — not sleeping the way they normally sleep, not eating the way they normally eat,” said Dr. Laura Knobel, a family physician in Bluffton. One of the best ways to stave off illness, Knobel said, is to maintain your regular eating, sleeping and exercise habits while on your trip.
BADGER: AR IMAGES / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM; PURELL: TAB62 / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM; OFF!: JEFFREY B. BANKE / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
Keep your hands clean “Make sure you’re washing your hands constantly,” Knobel said. And in between washings, be mindful of what you’re touching. Can you walk up the stairs without using the handrail? Do you need to push open the restroom door with your hands, or could you use your elbow?
Dr. Russell Daniel, with Southcoast Spine in Charleston and Aiken Augusta, is now teaming with Southeast Spine Care to offer regenerative medicine in Savannah. Dr. Daniel offers PRP and autologous stem cell in Savannah as a non surgical option for joint arthritis, tendonitis, and spine disease. PRP is very effective for tennis elbow. In addition, Dr. Daniel has vast experience with NEVRO HF-10 stimulation for chronic back and neck pain. This therapy works even in cases where surgery failed.

Exercise portion control “When people are traveling,” Knobel said, “they want to sample the cuisines of the areas that they’re in. But you can monitor your portion sizes.” Opt for lunch-sized portions and small-plate specials to try different foods while keeping your overall calorie intake in check.
Stay hydrated Your body needs to be properly hydrated to stay healthy, so keep bottled water in hand when traveling. Drink well ahead of and during the flight, avoiding alcohol that will sack your hydration efforts. And if you’re traveling to a foreign country where fresh water is a concern, be sure to avoid ice in drinks and use bottled water for brushing your teeth.

Carry medications with you Don’t check prescription medications and other medical necessities with your luggage when flying. “That can become a major issue if your luggage gets lost or your flight is delayed,” Knobel said.
Keep moving Traveling often involves a lot of sitting, which can be dangerous, Knobel said. “On planes, when blood gets to your feet, that blood sits in the bottom of your feet and because it’s not moving as well, it can form clots,” she said. If possible, get up and move every so often. If you can’t, then spend some time flexing and extending your feet, making circles in the air with them. “Just by contracting the muscles in your legs, you’re going to pump that blood back up to your heart.”
Know your own stressors If the end of a vacation fills you with anxiety over the piles of laundry and email catch-up session you’ll have to face, book your vacation in a way that banks an extra day at home before returning to your regular routine. “And never take the last flight of the day,” Knobel said, “because if you miss that flight, you’re stuck where you are.” H&W

Don’t Go It Alone SOCIAL ISOLATION IS ON THE RISE, AND CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT HEALTH BY ROBYN PASSANTE
I
t’s common knowledge that loneliness and social isolation can lead to depression — and vice versa. But feeling lonely for an extended period can be detrimental to one’s health in a variety of other ways, some of which might not seem all that obvious. “Research is coming out that that social connectedness is one of the most protective things, particularly as people age,” said Bluffton psychologist Maria Malcolm. “When you think about loneliness and social isolation, it’s a stressor on your mind and on your body, and it’s well-documented that when you are experiencing chronic stress, that is going to negatively impact a lot.”
of groups, but if you don’t feel like you have anything in common, you can feel like a real outlier.” The first step toward addressing one’s loneliness, Malcolm said, is to look inward. “A little bit of self examination comes in. Who are the people I want to surround myself with? Is it creative people? Is it people who share my politics? Is it people who share my faith? Perhaps people who share some sort of philanthropic passion that I have,” she said. “But you may not necessarily find those people at the community coffee hour. You’re going to have to dig down and do some work.”
YOU MIGHT BE IN A NUMBER OF GROUPS, BUT IF YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE ANYTHING IN COMMON, YOU CAN FEEL LIKE A REAL OUTLIER.
Studies have linked loneliness, via increased levels of stress hormones, to an increased risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and cognitive decline. Other recent findings link loneliness to Alzheimer’s disease as a preclinical sign for that form of dementia. In her practice, Malcolm often sees people facing loneliness and social isolation after arriving in the Lowcountry to begin a new phase of life. “One of the biggest things I have learned is that many people are not adequately prepared when they relocate and retire, that they’ve left all their supports behind,” she said. “I think many people have not adequately realized that before they make this big move.” But it’s not just newcomers who can feel socially isolated. Those who have spouses, club memberships and jobs can be suffering from loneliness too. “You can be very lonely with a large group of people around you,” Malcolm said. “It’s more about feeling a lack of connection. You might be in a number 18 yourlocalhealthchoice.com
Once you can pinpoint what you value and what truly makes you feel connected to others, the search for your tribe becomes easier — and the connections you make will be more meaningful. Here are a few tips to consider: Take a personal inventory. Ask yourself ‘What am I passionate about? When do I feel most alive, most connected? Who are the people with whom I feel very alive?’ Get involved in activities that put you in touch with those kinds of people. For example, if you’re a wildlife lover, help count sea turtle nests or take a guided bird-watching walk. If your fondest memories of connection are from college, find a local alumni group. Get what you give. Sign up for an organization like Hilton Head Island Safe Harbour, where residents can help other residents. “Any kind of community organization that provides help and socialization on both sides of the equation is good,” Malcolm said.
Have some structure in your day. Structure is helpful across the board for mood disorders and anxiety disorders, as it gives us a sense of purpose and control. Move more. Adding physical activity you enjoy every day — preferably outside — can help lower stress levels and boost your energy, which makes the thought of socializing feel more appealing. Challenge yourself. Once or twice a week, try something you’ve never done before. “With every tiny piece of exploration you do, it widens your world a little bit. Possibilities, options, alternatives open up more organically,” Malcolm said. Sometimes, what is familiar isn’t meeting your needs anymore. Get help from a professional. If you’re still struggling, seek help from a mental health practitioner, someone in your faith community or your primary care doctor. H&W
