AS THE COOL WEATHER SETTLES IN, things over in the Holy Tequila kitchen at Park Plaza continue to heat up. The culinary team headed by Executive Chef Jorge Covarrubias has been building momentum for the past 12 months, Voted Hilton Head’s Best Mexican Restaurant in 2015, One of the Top 12 Mexican Restaurants in South Carolina 2016, and were most recently featured in September as the #6 Taco Spot in South Carolina. Needless to say, this is a must visit destination for anyone craving delicious and innovative Mexican cuisine! The team behind Holy Tequila is the same local restaurant group responsible for delivering Hilton Head’s undisputed “Best Burger” every year since 2012 at Charbar Company next door in Park Plaza. Rolling into the fall, the Holy Tequila culinary team is debuting a new bar snack menu with a variety of antojitos (literally translated “little cravings”), delivered just in time for football season festivities. Additionally, they are putting out a rotating roster of seasonal chef specials that will incorporate a few more refined dishes designed to push the limits a bit further and take your taste buds for an adventure. As one can only hope, these new items will stay true to the Holy Tequila style we’ve come accustomed to, combining elements of authenticity, regional new American flavors, fresh gourmet ingredients and culinary finesse that take the menu items from average to far from ordinary, in all the best ways possible. To complement the new menu roster, Holy Tequila is featuring promotions aimed at showcasing the best products they have to offer while encouraging guests to experiment and try new things. Think Margarita Mondays, Taco and Tequila Tuesdays, Wine Wednesdays... you get the picture. The idea is that by featuring interesting Spanish wines or unique tequilas at amazing prices, guests will be more inclined to try new things. As owner Nick Bergelt put it, “we want our guests to feel comfortable exploring new flavors, wines and spirits and learn a little about themselves along the way. Ultimately if they try something that they haven’t had before, and love it, we did our jobs and it’s a win win.” To top it all off, Holy Tequila’s sprawling 30 foot garage doors will be propped open to the outdoor patio and Park Plaza gardens, creating an awesome open air environment to enjoy both lunch and dinner occasions. The restaurant’s unique ambiance is complemented with their house flamenco guitarists playing live music everyday of the week starting at happy hour, which greatly enhances the unparalleled experience for those seeking a fun & casual coastal cantina environment at prices that won’t break the bank. Now that the summer crowds are gone, go check out all the new offerings from our amigos at Holy Tequila, you will be glad you did. Just remember to take advantage of their call ahead seating to guarantee your spot on a busy night! You can give them a call at 843-681-8226 to reserve your next night out on the town or visit them online at www.HolyTequila.com and facebook.com/HolyTequila for pictures of their daily special creations!

eveloped in 1956 by Charles Fraser, Hilton Head has come a long way from its mere 300-person population in the early 1950s. Today, the island’s year-round population is about 39,000. At only 12 miles long and 4 miles wide, this island has much to offer vacationers. Here on Hilton Head, we may move slower, but that’s just island time. Friendly locals and beautiful scenery make for the perfect seaside getaway with countless activities. With many beaches, world-class golf courses and tennis courts, endless restaurants, shopping and so much more, we can guarantee you’ll never be bored. Here you can choose from a lazy day spent on the beach or an adventurous day out on the water doing water sports. As for the beaches, they’re all public and equally stunning. Each one of the beaches offers a different feel. For example, Coligny Beach

offers food and shopping in a fun, beachy environment while Burkes Beach is a more low key environment. But, if you are looking for something in between, there’s still a beach for you. If you want to enjoy the salty ocean water, but are looking for a more active day, there are countless water sports. Jet skiing, paddle boarding and parasailing are among the most popular. Even off the water, we have enough things to do to keep anyone busy. Hilton Head Island offers 20 spectacular golf courses. The most popular and notable is the Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines, home of the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage tournament. Many other local golf courses are also ranked among the best in the world. Even if your golf game isn’t up to par, there’s always a tennis court ready to play on. Hilton Head and tennis are a match made in heaven. We host eight of the

world’s top 100 tennis resorts and camps and have courts in all three Grand Slam surfaces. Improve your game at a tennis academy or play a leisurely game with friends at one of our tennis clubs. We are a spectacular biking destination, with over 60 miles of bike paths and 100 miles of protected public pathways. Rent bikes or bring your own to enjoy the island on bike. Don’t forget about the arts. We boast the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina for both performing and visual arts. Stop by and see what drama, comedy or musical is playing during your stay. Our award-winning island has changed much since its start in the 50s, but we preserve our small island’s rich history while staying fresh with new activities, resorts and restaurants every year. Hilton Head Island is sure to impress vacationers from near and far. 

BLUFFTON

HEART OF THE LOWCOUNTRY

B

luffton began as a Native American enclave where tribes could fish and collect oysters, then trade them along the May River. Later, it became a retreat for wealthy cotton, indigo and rice plantation owners who enjoyed the river breezes from the town’s bluff. Thus its name, Bluffton. That life revolving around gentle breezes continues today, earning the town the designation of “one of the last true Southern coastal villages.” Bluffton didn’t change much for decades, not until interest in Hilton Head flowed over the bridges onto the mainland — a little at first then Bluffton’s population surged with the construction of Sun City Hilton Head, now home to 14,000 people. Geographically, Bluffton mushroomed through vigorous annexation, going from 1 square mile to 53 square miles in the 1990s. Within that perimeter, development exploded, creating a critical mass of young families that have given Bluffton its own flavo . Town planners grouped development so residential areas remain nice and peaceful. Shopping centers are clustered along U.S. 278; several schools and athletic fields ring McCracken Circle, and a dining and entertainment district keeps the Calhoun Street Promenade hopping. Yet, still central to the town’s ambiance is Old Town which is Bluffton’s original square mile. It’s sprinkled with artisan shops, art galleries and one-of-a-kind eateries. Now a National Historic District, Old Town includes the pre-Civil War Church of the Cross and the antebellum Heyward House, which serves as Bluffton’s visitor center. Not only is Bluffton a great coastal village, a couple of attractions keep Bluffton on many “best of” or “most interesting town” lists. One is the iconic Bluffton Oyster Co., one of the last operating oyster factories on the Eastern Coast. Another is Palmetto Bluff, a coveted community that boasts the five-star Inn at Palmetto Bluff and protected wilderness overlooking the May River. Despite its vastly expanded dimensions, Bluffton remains a small town. Because the warm weather makes outdoor activities possible year-round, the town’s parks host a plethora of festivals, events and public gatherings in every season. Bluffton offers an ideal blend for its residents: small-town feel with the shopping, dining and entertainment found in much more cosmopolitan areas. But if you really want to know what makes Bluffton unique, head to the May River. After all, Bluffton’s elevated view of that waterway gave it its name, and the town remains true to its watery roots. 

Gullah

EMORY CAMPBELL A LEADER IN THE GULLAH PRESERVATION MOVEMENT BY TIM WOOD | PHOTOS BY LLOYD WAINSCOTT

mory Campbell has spent a lifetime enduring and influencing change on Hilton Head Island. He grew up Gullah at a time long before artists and tourists celebrated the culture. Long before the days of a bridge connecting the Sea Islands to the mainland, Campbell boated to high school and became the valedictorian at Michael C. Riley High School in Bluffton. At first, the scholar was oblivious to the history of the region. He left the Lowcountry to get an education — first a biology degree at Savannah State College, later a master’s degree in environment engineering at Tufts University in Boston. Campbell was intent on using his education to help his family — helping his parents build a house and getting his paraplegic brother medical help up north. But while he was up north, Campbell became increasingly curious about his culture’s history, and that fed a hunger to return to the Lowcountry to help his people. “I was learning just how important the islands and the culture were. The more I learned, the more I knew I needed to make my way back home and help,” Campbell said. He has done more than help over the last half century. He’s championed health care and infrastructure for the Gullah and worked to protect land from being lost to devel-

opers. In his three decades leading the Penn Center, he evolved a school started to educate freed slaves into a vital force to preserve and honor the Gullah heritage. Campbell also served as the first chairman of the GullahGeechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, helping to oversee the preservation of the Gullah over four states. Today, he runs Gullah Heritage Consulting Services and leads Gullah Heritage Trail Tours on the island. He’s evolved from a wide-eyed and ever-curious youth to a constantly active participant in his culture’s history. The spiritual leader of the Gullah preservation movement has been more reflective than ever as of late, taking part in a documentary chronicling the Gullah, “Hilton Head Island Back in the Day: Through the Eyes of the Gullah Elders.” “What a wonderful project that has been,” he said of the film, which was released in October. “Gullah is all about storytelling, about sharing tales of working and loving the land from generation to generation. But we haven’t always been good at documenting that history, so this was so important.” Campbell has been a doer for so long, and doers don’t spend a lot of time looking back or patting themselves on the back. But he sees progress, as the Gullah have gone from a displaced by development to blending into “progress.”

LUXURY

BY BARRY KAUFMAN

uxury, as it is all too commonly defined is simply a transaction wherein an obscene amount of money is traded for something that exists solely to justify its price tag. It’s the yacht that harbors an onboard bowling alley, helicopter landing pad and full-service personal Starbucks (complete with barista who actually spells your name right). It’s the solid gold Italian sports car with built-in shiatsu massage and 20,000-carat emerald gear shifter. The recipe for luxury is simple: fin where “over the top” is, then keep climbing for a few miles. Too often, luxury is just hollow avarice, and that’s why luxury is cheap. But Lowcountry luxury, now that takes style. The good life is all around you, in every sunbaked beach and every forest path creeping between centuries-old live oaks. It’s in every perfectly manicured golf course and on the face of every local who already knows your name. Compared to that, how much joy can there honestly be in going over the top? Just as every neighborhood’s covenants hold fast to the same earth tones, so too is our luxury muted just a tad. Ostentatious just isn’t our style. So what is? Read on.

Apple Edition Watch

It’s not about impressing the neighbors. It’s not about dropping an obscene amount of cash. It’s about sophistication, style and elegance. This is the Lowcountry Luxe.

You’re already going to buy the Apple Watch. Just go ahead and admit it. But as much pride as Apple takes in placing form above function, there’s something about the basic Apple Watch that doesn’t quite jive with evening wear. The iPhone is a beautiful piece of technology, but it hardly complements a two-button blazer when shrunk down and strapped to your wrist. Enter the Apple Edition watch. Crafted with an 18-karat yellow or rose gold case and a precision-machined sapphire crystal display, the Apple Edition Watch can be paired with a classic black, rose gray

or midnight blue buckle, or the bright red modern buckle for a pop of color to pair with your favorite cocktail dress. The price tag of $10,000 to $17,000 might be on the high end, but have you ever tried to send a tweet from a Cartier Tank Anglaise?

The Bentley Flying Spur

The name itself evokes images of bygone luxury, when cars were given names, not numbers. A limousine in the back seat and a drag racer in the front, this handcrafted masterpiece of an automobile beautifully balances luxury and power. The famed Flying Spur W12 engine puts 616 horses under a hood that embodies the craftsmanship the Bentley nameplate is known for. The interiors, for example, are still stitched by hand in true Bentley fashion. And in keeping with the spirit of luxury designed not for flash but for inspiration, we should tell you that even with an MSRP north of $200,000, the Flying Spur is considered the entry-level model in the Bentley family. Don’t let any of those Mulsanne drivers know how fun this thing is.

The Gunboat 55

Named the “top domestic” at the Monaco Yacht Show, the Gunboat 55 is a carbon-fibe work of art. Sail around the world or simply turn heads at Harbour Town with a 57-foot catamaran that places a premium on simplicity without ever sacrificing luxury. From the mast to the crossbeam, the Gunboat 55 presents passengers with space built for capturing the salt air, thanks to an open aft end. Unwind on weather-proof Italian style ultra-leather sofas, grill up your catch on the built-in barbecue on the aft deck’s teak “back porch,” then retire to one of two cabins with queen-size berths and private heads. Every inch of this seaborne stunner was designed for luxury, right down to the stainless steel Bosch appliances in the galley, but even greater care was taken to build the Gunboat 55 with the sailor in mind. The result is a captain’s dream vessel.

FOLLY FIELD BEACH (5)

A bit off the beaten path from the plantations and resorts, Folly Field has more of a locals’ beach feel. With a shorter walk to the beach than nearby Driessen Beach, it is both convenient and quiet. Take a long walk and grab a pit stop and a drink at the outdoor bar at the nearby The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, or spread out your towel and spend the day at one of the island’s wider and uncluttered beaches. Loved by surfers and body boarders, it still can occasionally be treacherous with its riptides and undertows. BEST FOR: Surfers, walking and biking ACCESS: Located on Starfish Road, a right turn off Folly Field Road

hatever your vision of the “beach life” may entail, the sun-splashed beaches of Hilton Head Island offer as many experiences as there are shells on their sandy shores. From its heel to its toe, here’s an overview of some of the island’s popular beaches and hidden gems. 

MITCHELVILLE BEACH (3)

Many locals consider this beach Hilton Head’s best-kept secret. If you’re looking to build sandcastles on a pristine beach, pick another spot. If you’re looking for privacy and beauty in a rich historical setting, this beach is for you. Be sure to check out the incredible story of Mitchelville in the nearby park. BEST FOR: Privacy, fishing, walking ACCESS: Near the end of Beach City Road at Mitchelville Beach Park

FISH HAUL CREEK BEACH (2) DOLPHIN HEAD (1)

Located on the northern tip of Hilton Head in Hilton Head Plantation, Dolphin Head beach overlooks Port Royal Sound and includes a mile-long walking path and a quiet (only open to HHP residents) beach dotted with vestigial live oaks and pines. Hilton Head Plantation is one of the island’s largest year-round residential communities, and Dolphin Head is more private than some of the island’s other beaches. BEST FOR: Walking (at low tide), surf fishing and collecting shells ACCESS: Dolphin Head Lane, inside Hilton Head Plantation

The area is known for its diverse ecology, maritime forest, salt marsh and creeks, beach dunes and scrub, and the Port Royal tidal flats. The beach itself is a generous walk from the park, but ambles through a wonderful nature path, and is lightly used for swimming. The beach park, located on the “heel” of the island, is 31 acres of mostly untouched nature, feels like your own private beach and is arguably the scene for the best bird watching in all of Hilton Head. BEST FOR: Walking, birdwatching, clamming and fishing ACCESS: Located near the end of Beach City Road, accessible from Fish Haul Creek Park

ISLANDER'S BEACH (4)

A favorite of locals, Islander’s Beach recently earned a high ranking in Coastal Living magazine’s Top 21 Beaches on the East Coast. It’s less crowded than most Hilton Head spots and swimmer-friendly, thanks to its gentle underwater slope. Parking is at a premium and is mostly reserved for residents and year-round pass holders, with metered spots available for guests. For nearby mid-island visitors, a bike ride or a friendly beachfront drop-off might be the best bet for easy access. BEST FOR: Locals and swimming ACCESS: Located at 94 Folly Field Road, at Sparkleberry Lane

BEACHES ■ DRIESSEN BEACH (6)

A long boardwalk connects the maritime forest to the white-sand beach. A long, wide shoreline leaves ample room to spread out, and the flat ocean floor and small waves make it kid-friendly and great for body boarding or just wading. Tucked in a heavily shaded and wooded area, it’s a bit hard to find but with tons of amenities like parking and restrooms, it’s popular with both locals and discerning visitors alike. BEST FOR: Day trips, swimming, sunning, locals and in-the-know visitors ACCESS: Off William Hilton Parkway, at the end of Bradley Beach Road

BURKES BEACH (7)

Located to the northern side of Chaplin Community Park, Burke’s Beach is adjacent to Singleton Beach, divided by the natural folly field The beach offers seasonal lifeguards and limited parking, but boasts some of the best waves for surfing and boarding. The dog park at Chaplin Park is a nice touch and makes it a great destination for a bark-andbeach day with man’s best friend. BEST FOR: Surfing boarding, walking and pets ACCESS: Just south of Palmetto Dunes at the end of Burkes Beach Road

NORTH FOREST BEACH (8)

Located near over 100 dining and shopping options in one of the island’s oldest neighborhoods, it is one of the places to be on Hilton Head. For surfers, the beach area at Jacana Street is known to offer some of the best waves at high tide on the island. Locals swear by the shoreline as the best on Hilton Head, and the quaint mix of older beach cottages with modern ocean compounds makes for a compelling community feel. BEST FOR: Swimming, walking and surfing ACCESS: The one-mile stretch of beach starts at Coligny Circle and runs north to the Sonesta Resort located in Shipyard Plantation

COLIGNY BEACH (9)

SOUTH FOREST BEACH (10)

Part of Hilton Head’s “Ocean Community,” South Forest Beach is on a one-mile stretch of beachfront between the Coligny Circle and Sea Pines Plantation gate. It is the largest of the island’s public beaches, and draws more crowds than North Forest Beach. Wide, comfortable and spacious, and buffered somewhat from nearby development, it’s a great all-purpose spot. Venture a little further away from the public access point that divides the north and south beaches, and you’ll find even more room to spread out. BEST FOR: Swimming, fishing biking and walking ACCESS: Public access on Alder Lane and Seaside Villas, off South Forest Beach Road

SOUTH BEACH (11)

Located in Sea Pines at the “toe” of the island near the South Beach Marina. Though the marina area is one of the more popular island destinations for visitors, with its dining, shopping and inventive water sports experiences, the Calibogue Beach itself is relatively quiet, nearly secluded, and is great for just watching the dolphins or a relaxing walk. Don’t go out at high tide, though, as there is little to no beach at that time. If you are not a Sea Pines resident or registered guest, you must pay $6 per vehicle to enter the resort. BEST FOR: Unique water sports opportunities (kayaking, sport fishing parasailing, etc.), sightseeing and walking ACCESS: Near Sea Pines South Beach Marina, best accessed by bike or foot

At Hilton Head’s busiest beach you’ll find soft sand and wonderful clean water. Even better, it’s close to the island’s unofficial downtown area. The beach is protected by security cameras and visitors can enjoy free Wi-Fi, volleyball nets and scores of beach rentals and free parking — just not at the popular Coligny Plaza. The beach and the shopping plaza do get a little crowded, but if you like an active and lively beach experience, this is your spot. BEST FOR: If the crowds are any indication, everybody. Perfect for sunbathing, swimming, biking, an early-morning jog or a romantic date night. ACCESS: At Coligny Circle, at the intersection of Pope Avenue and South Forest Beach Drive

Our Wonderful Beach Wildlife

CANNONBALL JELLYFISH

Also known as the cabbage head, this is the most common jellyfish encountered in our waters. It is the least venomous native jelly and stings are very mild. You will often see it washed up on the beach.

hat's that? It's a question visiting mothers and fathers are asked constantly by inquisitive children during family beach days. Don't lose cool points by answering, "that's a bird, son." Impress your little one with a name and a quick fact about the critter in question. Here is a look at the 10 most common animals you will see at the beach. 

FIDDLER CRAB

These creatures are abundant in the mud flats at low tide. They are smaller than a dime and live in holes they dig in the mud. They plug the holes as the tide comes in to help stay dry. Males show off their pincer claw to attract females.

These scavengers are the most common bird on the beach. They usually eat dead things that wash up on shore, steal other birds’ meals, beg tourists for food or hover around shrimp boats.

HORSESHOE CRAB

They resemble crustaceans but are actually closely related to spiders and scorpions. They are considered living fossils, originating 450 million years ago.

GHOST CRAB BLUE CRAB

Greatly cherished by local seafood chefs. Females have broad abdomens, like the dome of the Capitol. Males have narrow abdomens, like the Washington Monument.

BROWN PELICAN

These birds glide gracefully over the water until they spot a fish then they fold their wings and clumsily smash into the water to grab their prey.

They live in holes in the sand above the high tide line and stay inside during the hottest part of the day and throughout the coldest part of the winter. They emerge mostly at night to feed on clams.

BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN

More than 200 live here year-round, and many more are migratory. Local captains have given several of them names based on their personalities, such as Chopper and Nic.

LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLE GREAT BLUE HERON

These large wading birds come to the beach at dusk and usually remain until nightfall.

You’ll find their nests on Hilton Head Island beaches between May and August, when they come ashore at night to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch in about 60 days and the small turtles make their way to the ocean using the moon as their beacon.

Beach Rules & Regulations All violations of beach regulations can result up to fines of $500 per each offense. Respect the beautiful wildlife, and leave only your footprints when you go.

NOT ALLOWED

SCAUP OSPREY A large bird that circles overhead like an eagle. When it spots a fish it will dive at high speed and snatch its prey with its razor-sharp talons.

These ducks like to float together in the ocean by the thousands, forming what looks like an island. It's called a raft of scaup.

SEA NETTLE PIPING PLOVER

These sparrow-sized shorebirds run so fast along the tide line, their legs are a blur.

Jellyfish armed with up to two dozen tentacles that have rows of thousands of stinging cells. Their sting is fatal for their prey, but usually causes only discomfort for humans. Most stings occur in July and August.

 Alcohol of any kind (beer, wine, etc.)  Glass  Littering  Nudity  Disorderly conduct  Disturbing the peace  Unauthorized vehicles  Shark fishin  Fires and fi eworks  Harassing, harming, or removing of any live beach life (sand dollars, starfish conch shells, sea turtles, coral, etc.)  Damage to dunes  Sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6am  Distribution of handouts  Kites not under manual control  Sand-sailing  Stunt kites 10am-6pm April 1 through September 30  Unauthorized wearing of lifeguard logos  Launching, landing, or operating unauthorized motorized watercrafts

NOT ALLOWED in Designated

Swimming Areas, in protection of swimmers and sunbathers, between 10am6pm April 1 through September 30:  Fishing or surfcasting  Team Sports involving a ball  Games with metal items

ANIMAL RULES ON THE BEACH  Must remove and dispose of animal excrement  Must be on a leash or under positive voice control at all times

SAND DOLLAR

Flat sea urchin with velvet-textured spines covered with very small hairs. Coordinated movements of the spines enable sand dollars to move across the seabed. It’s illegal to remove living sand dollars from the beach.

SANDERLING Small shorebirds often seen in groups, chasing waves in and out looking for food in the intertidal sand flats Among other characteristics, their black legs and longer bills clearly distinguish them from piping plovers.

SEA STAR

They’re often called starfish but they're not actually fish They don’t have gills, scales or fins and move using hundreds of tube feet, which are located on their underside.

STINGRAY Equipped with sharp, serrated barbs at the base of their tails, they can also release toxins when startled. Hilton Head usually gets more than 150 stings reported each year, usually on the feet and ankles of people who step on them.

BEACH SAFETY

 Protect your skin with sunscreen and reapply at least every two hours, but if you are more prone to burning or in the water a lot, reapply more often.  Drink lots of water as your body needs to stay cool in the hot sun and drink water even if you are not thirsty. Thirst is the first sign of dehydration and being in the sun especially during the hottest part of the day can cause dehydration faster.  Watch for signs of heat stroke that often comes when one is dehydrated and in the sun for extended periods of time. When sweating does not help cool the body anymore, the body’s temperature rises and one may feel faint, have a rapid pulse, feel hot, skin flushed red, and more. Should this arise, call 911 and move the person to a cool place, wrap them in wet sheets, towels, or place ice packs on their wrists, ankles, armpits, and neck to cool them down. Keep watch on their breathing and

do not let anything block the airway; keep them lying down out of the sun.  Just as you put sunscreen on your skin, putting sunglasses on protects your eyes from the sun’s harsh UV rays.  Make sure to wear appropriate foot protection as many times the sand can be extremely hot and burn your feet. Beyond just the hot sand there are glass, shells, or sticks that can cut you as well as the occasional crab.

OCEAN SAFETY TIPS

 Never swim alone.  Learn to swim no matter how old you are as it could save your life or someone else’s.  Make sure you can always see the lifeguard and stay in designated swimming areas.  Always check the water conditions at the lifeguard post in case rip tides are high or stingrays or jellyfish are in the area. It is better to be prepared than find out the hard way.  Don’t swim against a current but swim across it.  Make sure to always have enough energy to make it back to land in any case.

FIRST AID TIPS FOR THE BEACH

 Sunburn: Soak under cool water most likely in a shower or tub. Aloe can often help heal and provide releif; taking Ibuprofen can help too.  Bee Sting: First and formost; if allergic, seek medical help immediately; if not, apply baking soda paste and ice.  Jellyfish Sting: Try to remove any remaining barbs; then rise with vinegar, apply dry sand; or put under hot water.  Snake bites: Use a compression dressing just above site. Seek medical help immediately and if you can remember the type of snake or at least the markings, it that will help with treatment.  Alligators: Stay away from them as they can both run and swim very fast, but if you do get bitten, call 911.  Sting Ray: Rinse with water and apply heat to neutralize sting; in any case, seek medical attention immediately.  Crab bites: Rise out well, clean out wound, and apply an antibiotic ointment as you can get infections from them. Depending on severity, may need stiches that would require seeking medical help.

FINAL TIP

AS ALWAYS, BE SMART AND CALL 911 IF NEW SYMPTOMS ARISE OR THE SITUATION WORSENS RAPIDLY. FALL/WINTER 2016 21

LADDER TOSS

Two balls connected to a string are called bolas. Each team has three sets of bolas. Each ladder has three rungs, each with a different point value, and players try to toss the bolas so they hang from a ladder rung. The top is worth 3, the middle is 2 and the bottom is 1. Points are tallied at the end of each round. Collect 21 points to win. Sets range from $32 to more than $150. Try not to hit other beachgoers with the bolas.

A paddleball beach sport that looks a bit like pingpong without the table. The paddles are smaller and the ball is larger. Sets range from $30 to more than $300. Two players face one another with the objective of hitting the ball back and forth without the ball hitting the ground. Hilton Head’s longstanding frescobol record is five hits.

a beautiful day. The sun is shining and there’s a lovely breeze. You have nowhere to be and nothing to do. It’s your day off, your home is clean and all chores have been

BOWLING Dig three holes in the sand — small, medium and large. Roll a ball toward the holes, awarding the most points for the smallest hole. Use a heavy ball that won’t blow away, something like a tennis ball. For the sake of beach joggers, don’t forget to fill the holes back up when you are done “bowling.”

A blend between cornhole, bocce ball and horseshoes. A set costs around $20 and comes with four small balls and a shovel used to dig two holes and trenches behind each hole. Get the ball in the hole for 3 points or the trench for 1 point. Teammates on opposing sides alternate tosses. Invented here in the Palmetto State, TidalBall is quickly gaining popularity on beaches all over the East Coast.

A version of beer pong without the table, using oversized cups and a ball. A set of 12 buckets and two balls costs around $70. Each team sets up a triangle of six buckets opposite of one another. The object is to eliminate the other team’s buckets buy throwing or bouncing the ball into them. Filling the buckets with alcohol is not advised.

KANJAM A game played with a flying disc and two slotted trash cans. The object of the game is to score points by throwing and deflecting the flying disc and hitting or entering the goal. The game ends when a team scores exactly 21 points or "chogs" the disc for an instant win. Players must get exactly 21, if you go over it reverts back to 17 points.

TIDALBALL

BEAR PONG

The ultimate game for the laziest of all beachgoers. Throw one of your flip-flop as far as you can. Have at least one other person do the same. The weakest throw buys the next round of drinks at the Tiki Hut, Pool Bar Jim’s or Jamaica Joe’z.

completed. You decide to go to the beach. You pack sunscreen, lunch and a towel. You get there and find a spot. You plop down in your beach chair and stare off into the great blue horizon. Now what? Many choose to unwind by reading, listening to music or sipping a favorite beverage. Others prefer something a little more active. Here are a few beach games and activities worth trying. 

FLIP-FLOP TOSS

FRISBEER

CORNHOLE A popular beach game known by many names, including tailgate, bean bag toss, doghouse or simply bags. Sets range from $30 to more than $200. Players take turns throwing bags of corn or beans at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. A bag in the hole scores 3 points while landing on the platform scores 1 point. Play continues until a team reaches 21. Never play for money with an Ohioan.

This combines the fun of washers with the precision of playing Frisbee. You need two empty cans, two PVC pipes about four feet tall and one Frisbee. Post the PVC pipes in the sand about eight feet apart. Place an empty aluminum can on top of each pipe. The goal is to knock the can off the pole. You get 2 points for hitting the pole and knocking the can to the ground and 3 points for hitting the can and knocking it to the ground. The other team gets points if they catch the can before it hits the ground. This game is best played with the Frisbee one hand and a beverage in the other.

■ BIKING

BIKING THE ISLAND

W

BY TIM WATSON

hile the Island only measures about 12 miles long by 5 miles wide, visitors can enjoy nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails accessible to all. In addition, there are close to 50 miles of paths behind the gates of private communities like Shipyard, Sea Pines, and Palmetto Dunes. The flat terrain and the bike path system make it very easy to ride on the bike paths; however, many visitors find the best place to pedal is on the beach. Enjoy a bike ride on the hard-packed sand near the water line at low tide. It is great fun and it offers a spectacular view. You might even see some dolphins! There are miles of beautiful bike paths open to all waiting for you to explore.

RULES OF THE ROAD First and foremost, be a safe rider. Please pay attention to traffic lights, crosswalks, and stop signs. There are small stop signs posted for bicyclists’ safety on the pathways, and it is never safe to cross anywhere other than at a marked crosswalk. Please lock your bike when not in use. As previously mentioned, bike rental companies usually provide bike locks at no additional cost. Bike paths inside gated communities, or plantations, are restricted for use by residents and guests of that community. If you do decide to ride on the beach, please do not ride in the water. The sea salt wreaks havoc on bikes and quickly damages the paint and moving parts. Please use fresh water to rinse off bikes that might have salt water on them.

VACATION TO REMEMBER Many vacationers feel that biking on Hilton Head is one of the factors that make our Island special. We hope that you will take advantage of our bike paths and bicycle vendors to make this vacation one to remember. 

■ BIKING

Best bike Rides on Hilton Head Island 2

... AS SELECTED BY LOCAL BIKE EXPERTS RON KNIGHT AND FRANK BABEL

1. MOST SCENIC RIDE The boardwalk at Barker Field overlooking the marsh is simply amazing. If you’re on the south end, visit the “toe” of the island on the beach looking at the entrance to South Beach Marina. You’ll see Harbour Town in the distance, Daufuskie Island dead ahead and the Atlantic to the left.

2. BEST BEACH TO CYCLE 1 3

Start at Palmetto Dunes, hit the beach and travel south to the tip of the island at South Beach — preferably with the wind at your back. Assuming cooperation from the tides and tourists, this is as good as it gets.

3. BEST NATURE TRAIL The rice dike trail in Sea Pines to the horse stables and into the Sea Pines Forest Preserve is incredibly rich in natural beauty, and it’s often almost empty.

4. BEST FAMILY RIDE Start at Coligny Circle and take the pathway west along Pope Avenue to New Orleans Road. Then turn right along the pathway and follow Arrow Road across the William Hilton Parkway to the Palmetto Bay Marina and back; you’ll stay off the main drags and discover a lengthy hidden ribbon of trail behind the shops and restaurants. For an alternate route, turn onto the William Hilton Parkway from New Orleans Road, follow the pathways to the Shelter Cove Marina and back.

5. BEST EXERCISE The Bike Doctor’s organized rides provide a great workout; riders leave the shop on New Orleans Road at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

6. BEST PICNIC SPOT Jarvis Park, Chaplin Park and Coligny are great spots to picnic — as is, you know, the beach.

7. MOST ROMANTIC 6

The beach at sunset or sunrise is just right for those romantic moments.

ince 1969 when the PGA Tour first visited Hilton Head Island, it has been hard to think of Hilton Head Island without thinking also of golf. The RBC Heritage has been a veritable who’s who of golfing immortals. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Davis Love III and many other golf luminaries have had their names etched on the champion’s trophy and received the now famous plaid jacket associated with the victory. The world-renowned Harbour Town Golf Links is open to the public and with a little advance planning you too can play the course your heroes play.

Not quite ready for the PGA Tour? That’s fine as well with over 20 public courses on Hilton Head and immediately off-island in Bluffton, there’s a track that will fit you like a glove. Forgot your clubs? All of the local courses offer great rental and demo programs. Don’t forget to ask for demo clubs; sometimes they are the latest and greatest but beware — you might shoot the round of your life and feel like taking them home with you. Winter, spring, summer or fall; Hilton Head Island golf is world class and you will have a great day on the links. 

es, “water, water every where…nor any drop to drink” as Coleridge wrote 215 years ago in the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” but we don’t care about drinking water as long as we can also enjoy it by boating, sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, charter boating and everything else. For locals and tourists alike, the creeks, rivers, sounds, ocean, lagoons, ponds, salt marshes, wetlands and maritime forests with their abundant wildlife provide a bounty of outdoor adventures for everyone of all ages. Kayaking on calm water that surrounds Hilton Head Island is not only relaxing, it can be a great adventure, too. And the best part? Kayaking is a sport for everyone. “Ability is not a concern,” said Mike Overton, president of Outside Hilton Head, which rents kayaks and other water sports equipment. “If you can walk around the block, you can kayak. This is taking a

nature walk through the marsh.” With the abundance of accessible inlets, rivers and lagoons in the area, kayaking is an exotic yet practical exercise. But it remains unchartered territory for many locals and tourists. For those willing to try, here are some basic expectations and recommendations. Whether starting with a lesson or tour, or for those who prefer trying solo, the necessities are safety precautions, knowing how to enter and exit the kayak and some paddling basics. Important safety rules include wearing a personal flotation device, keeping safe distances from larger water vessels such as boats, maintaining balance and simply staying in a comfort zone. When entering and exiting a kayak, a safe and convenient location is a boat ramp. Place the kayak parallel to the edge of the ramp and step sideways in and out of the kayak. Kayak paddles, unlike canoe prototypes,

have blades on both ends. Once in the water, grip the paddle with your arms slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Then alternate strokes from side to side, forming an imaginary figure eight. From there, one can kayak for leisure, or turn an afternoon into vigorous exercise. It’s much like deciding whether to walk, jog or run intervals, only on the water. The harder you paddle, the more strenuous the workout. Depending on the location, expect to encounter marine wildlife. In this area, dolphins are aplenty and may come within feet of your kayak. Manatees, river otters and various fish reside here, too. Many local companies that rent kayaks also have guided eco-tours and dolphin tours. Check in with a local outfitter for dolphin and nature boat cruises, fishing and sailboat charters, kayaking, kiteboarding, crabbing, parasailing, waterskiing, tubing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding, jet skiing and power boating.

GO CRABBING ON THE CRABBER J II They laughed when I said I was going with the kids to catch some crabs. They are not laughing anymore. What we did was make reservations on the sport crabbing boat Crabber J II which departs out of Shelter Cove Harbour. Once everyone was on board, the Crabby crew untied the lines and we motored out to the calm waters of Broad Creek. Along the way we saw two dolphins playing. We anchored in the shallow water right next to the salt marsh and everyone fished for blue crabs. It was a lot of fun. The crabby crew kept score and a girl from Cincinnati won the world famous Crabber J II T-shirt cause she caught the most crabs. Please call for current prices.

WATER DIRECTORY BOATING, CRUISING, SAILING KAYAK BROAD CREEK

This seven-mile saltwater river is the heart of Hilton Head Island and is the prime place to spot water birds such as egrets, pelicans, blue herons and sandpipers. You will often see dolphin or watermen harvesting crabs the traditional way. All three public marinas on Broad Creek offer rentals. If you bring your own kayak, a good launching point is the boat landing next to Old Oyster Factory. Be sure to keep an eye on the tide. You don’t want to get stuck on the razor-sharp oyster beds. Go against the tide on your way out and ride it back in.

SPOT A DOLPHIN In Orlando, you’ll pay $80 to watch the world’s saddest dolphins mull about their depressing enclosures. You can see them free here, frolicking in their natural habitat. More than 200 live here full-time and many more are migratory. A good place to spot them is on the island’s southern tip, where Calibogue Sound meets the Atlantic Ocean. You can get even closer by renting a boat or booking a nature tour for around $25 an hour.

RENT A BOAT If you didn’t bring a boat, you can rent one by the hour or by the day. Rentals of all sizes are available all year, allowing you to explore our numerous waterways at your own pace. Visit Daufuskie Island or find the infamous May River sandbar (aka Redneck Riviera), where folks from all walks of life gather to party. The sandbar appears once a day on receding tides and can only be reached by boat.

LEARN TO SKIMBOARD The surfboards only come out when a storm is coming or going. Our waves may be wimpy for hanging 10, but they’re perfect for the popular and extremely dangerous sport of skimboarding. Unlike surfing, skimboarding begins on the beach by dropping the board onto the thin wash of previous waves. Skimboarders use their momentum to skim out to breaking waves, which they catch back into shore in a manner similar to surfing. The end result is usually a faceplant.

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD Get a new perspective on Hilton Head – standing right there in the water. It requires all kinds of balance, and you may take a tumble or two into the drink, but trust us — it’s easier than you think, and you can do it.

FLY HIGH WITH A JETPACK Maybe the coolest water adventure is HHI Jetpack. The business operates out of Shelter Cove Marina. The water propels you forward while you’re completely weightless in the air. First time pilots experience the thrill of flight while your certified instructor controls the throttle remotely. It’s the ultimate water toy. 

Bloody Point

Freeport Marina

Guided Tours Bloody Point consists of the Silverdew winery & the bloody point Lighhouse, both on the grounds of an interpretive living plantation. The original brick buildings served as store houses for wicks, glass globes, fuel, pulley systems and different colored weather signals that sat atop the two ninety foot directional spires for the lighthouse. The combination served as a range light system, guiding and protecting marine craft approaching and deporting the port of Savannah and the immediate area.

Your first stop on Daufuskie Island is Freeport Marina! Here you will find our general store offering a collection of photos, books, and a collection of Daufuskie Island memorabilia. Enjoy a cool drink and the freshest seafood in the Lowcountry at the Old Daufuskie Crab Company. This unique Island treat features a variety of delicious entrees set against the backdrop of Daufuskie’s magnificent Island sunset. Dine on the freshest shrimp, oysters, fish, and all the ‘fixin’s. You can even shuck your own oysters right off the roasting pit. This is “down home good eat’n”. Are you looking to stay the night? Freeport Marina also offers eclectic Island cabins which sleep up to 8 adults.

Calibogue Cruises offers various adventures for the entire family. You can choose to hop aboard a golf cart for your own selfguided exploration through Daufuskie Island’s historic district, beautiful isolated beaches, and unique art galleries. Another great tour is the historic guided bus tour. A knowledgeable local guide will delight you with fascinating stories of Daufuskie’s past and provide the latest news on modern day Island events. Along this 3 hour tour, you will visit over a dozen historical points as you step back in time to learn about Daufuskie life during wartime and the culture of Gullah. See the reverse side map for a directory of historical points.

Upon the decommission of the light, the assistant keeper, Arthur “Pappy” Burn applied for and was granted the very first winery license for the state of South Carolina! The “winery” was now the aging venue for the Scuppernong, Mango, Fig, and various fruits for the productions of Daufuskie’s “Silver Dew Winery” The original lighthouse sat upon the beach, but after surviving the worst earthquake and hurricane win South Carolina history, was placed in it’s present location by oxen and timbered logs. It has been both lighthouse and private residences, now serving as a museum and events centers for dinners, weddings, and island events. Active crops being grown are Carolina Gold Rice, Sea Iland Cotton, Indigo, and a Grape Vineyard. Rest Areas and a gift shop are also on site.

GETTING TO DAUFUSKIE JUST GOT EASIER New ferry service offers four round-trip rides each day Getting to and from Daufuskie Island takes some patience and planning if you don’t have your own boat. BY DON MCLOUD

B

ut a new contract between Beaufort County, a private Daufuskie community and a Hilton Head Island marina should make it easier to hitch a ride across Calibogue Sound. Daufuskie residents and resort owners have long clamored for expanded ferry services to and from Hilton Head. The $370,000 contract approved in June does just that. Round-trip rides will be offered four times a day, seven days a week, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. An additional one-way run will leave Hilton Head each night at 11:30. For the Pelorus Group, a Utah-based real estate investment firm that recently purchased the Palmetto Bay Marina on Hilton Head, the new service marks the

final phase of its effort to revive Daufuskie’s Melrose on the Beach resort, which it rescued from bankruptcy four years ago. The firm also sees the service as lending an economic boost to the entire island. “Over the last four years of establishing Melrose, it’s become clear what the fundamental issue is for Daufuskie, and we know this is the answer,” says Brent Hall, a Pelorus partner. “There needs to be island-wide transportation for all residents, visitors, guests, etc. It’s been the missing piece for the success of the island for a long-term strategy.”

THE MISSING LINK For years, Daufuskie residents have relied on J&W Corp. of Greenwood for

ferry service. Its owner, Wick Scurry, has provided transportation between the two islands since the 1970s, but this year, he decided to withdraw his bid for the county’s ferry service contract. Scurry says his company, Enjoy Daufuskie Island, will continue to provide ferry service between Broad Creek Marina on Hilton Head and Freeport Marina on Daufuskie, with tourists making up the bulk of his customer base. He says he is seeing a 20 percent increase in business each year and says letting the county contract go won’t have much impact on his bottom line. He estimates that during summer, he carries 200 to 250 passengers a day, with round-trip tickets starting at $34. Those tourists also visit his marina, restaurant, museum, winery, general store and other attractions on the island.

WATER ■ “Most people don’t think very many people go to Daufuskie, but they do,” he says. Several other businesses provide reservation-only boat trips to Daufuskie — with round-trip prices starting at $45. They also report having a busy summer. H2O Sports runs 12-passenger Zodiac hard-bottom boats between Harbour Town and Daufuskie each day. Many of the riders take day tours or play golf. Outside Hilton Head also provides various shuttles and tours. May River Excursions offers a mainland link, with Carolina Skiffs holding up to 12 passengers launching from the Calhoun Street dock in Bluffton. And the private Bloody Point community has a water taxi that launches from The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa. Scurry says he has also seen a growing trend of Daufuskie visitors using their own boats to get to and from the island. He says he’s added 3,000 feet of dock space at his Freeport Marina in the past few years and needs to add more for visiting boaters. “We used to have to bring the tourists over there ourselves, and now we don’t,” he says. “They come themselves, which is wonderful.” But when it comes to residents, resort guests and workers getting to and from the island, many have been telling Beaufort County Council members for years that they feel abandoned. The former ferry contract did not provide enough trips to and from the island, they said. The infrequent service also made it difficult for the Melrose resort to attract the guests and investment it and the island need, according to Pelorus officials So Pelorus went searching for a transportation solution, and it believes it has found it through a partnership with Haig Point, a private Daufuskie Island community, and the purchase of Palmetto Bay Marina. “This is a big piece we’ve been working hard for, with a lot of money and energy and time,” Hall says. “… It’s a key fundamental for economic success and to attract investment and financing that’s important to ourselves as well as others.”

A LENGTHY SEARCH ENDS Hall says Pelorus spent more than a year seeking a launching point for a ferry before buying the Palmetto Bay Marina property. Until now, the ferry has served only Haig Point residents and guests, and it transports Daufuskie children to and from school through a contract with the Beaufort County School District. Under the county contract approved in June, Haig Point’s ferries will serve all Daufuskie residents, Hall says. The public can also purchase rides. In July, soon after the county contract was approved, Pelorus was fine-tuning the details, Hall said, but he expected the service to be in operation in August. Ticket costs for the general public had not been finalized and work was underway on setting up a reservations system. Parking spaces will be added at Palmetto Bay Marina. Hall says the new ferry service is heading into its first phase, and more boats and embarkation points will come on board over time. “It’s something that will grow,” he says, “because there’s a need.”  FALL/WINTER 2016 39

Blessed with natural beauty, white sandy beaches and temperate climate, Hilton Head Island has earned a reputation as one of the most family friendly vacation destinations in the United States.

At

the top of many must-visit lists is a climb to the summit of the iconic lighthouse in Harbourtown. Visitors will learn about the island’s rich natural history and are rewarded for their climb with spectacular views of Harbourtown Golf Links, Harbourtown Yacht Basin and Calibogue Sound. Active families enjoy eco-kayak or stand-up paddle boarding tours through salt marsh estuaries, where naturalists and photographers have frequent sightings of bald eagles, hawks and osprey. Thrill seekers will enjoy a visit to ZipLine Hilton Head for an adventuresome canopy tour. Dolphin sightseeing tours, sailing trips, parasailing, waterskiing and tubing are especially popular.

A custom pirate ship is outfi ted for a pirate adventure tour. Sport fishing charters, night shark trips and a catamaran sunset cruise are also available. A boat trip to Daufuskie Island offers a glimpse of what other sea islands were like before bridges and causeways opened them to development. Most native residents of the island are descendants of freed slaves, who have made their living oystering and fishing for decades. Family-oriented singer, songwriter Gregg Russell can be found performing beneath the famous Liberty Tree six nights per week throughout the summer season. At Lawton Stables a guided trail ride through the scenic Sea Pines Forest Preserve is offered. Young children will treasure a visit with Callie, the island’s pet deer. A visit to Coligny Beach is an open invitation for people watching, where the flip-flop-tappin rhythm of steel drums and Jimmy Buffet songs set a casual mood. Jennifer Moscar of Atlanta, formerly of Bluffton, took photographs of chocolate ice cream mustaches on her two young

Thousands of family’s annually enjoy Harbourfest at Shelter Cove, where Shannon Tanner has entertained audiences for the past 25 years. Live entertainment, bouncy houses, food, arts and crafts, and a Tuesday evening fireworks display are featured. For the Freeland family of Rochester, New York, an afternoon at Islander’s Beach was an opportunity to construct an elaborate sand castle of a giant alligator, drawing admiration from a family of four on Fat Tire bicycles out for an evening ride along the shore. Many families also enjoy championship caliber golf, tennis, cycling and miniature golf. Others relax during a game of bocce or kite flying. A children’s museum, video arcade, bowling alley and several movie theaters are also available. 

The very first shopping center on the island and a perennial favorite is Coligny Plaza at the intersection of Pope Avenue and North Forest Beach. Considered Hilton Head’s “downtown” there are more than 60 stores, 15 restaurants and a unique movie theatre that shows mostly independent films. Candy, T-shirts, and great apparel are there along with groceries, restaurants and a hardware store. 46 HHIGO.COM

MID-ISLAND Shelter Cove Harbour (Shelter Cove Lane): With a beautiful Mediterranean waterfront village setting, this is one of Hilton Head’s most popular spots. It is located directly across from the entrance to Palmetto Dunes Resort and offers specialty stores, a salon, art galleries and many popular restaurants with awesome views of Broad Creek. The Plaza at Shelter Cove (50 Shelter Cove Lane): This shopping center is home to many locally-owned landmarks, including Outside Hilton Head. It is also home to medical and real estate professionals, a nail salon, a liquor store and features popular national chains such as TJ Maxx and Whole Foods. Shelter Cove Towne Centre (40 Shelter Cove Lane): The former Mall at Shelter Cove has been transformed into this new shopping center overlooking Broad Creek. The village features 290,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and entertainment space surrounded by natural amenities and luxury residences. It is a joint venture between Blanchard & Calhoun Commercial and Kroger Real Estate.

NORTH END Sea Turtle Marketplace (formerly Pineland Station) (430 William Hilton Parkway): Located at the intersection of William Hilton Parkway and Mathews Drive, this shopping center is currenty under construction. The only stores still open are Steinmart and Starbucks. Main Street Village (1500 Main Street): Each building has a different style and this very walkable area is reminiscent of Main Street in a small town. Here you can find great restaurants, handmade crafts, gift items, salon services, and more. Festival Center (145 Pembroke Drive): Here you can find big stores like Walmart, Publix and Barnes & Noble with some smaller offerings like Wildbirds Unlimited, Tuesday Morning and Pier One Imports.

BLUFFTON Belfair Town Village (71 Towne Drive): A 35-acre mixedused development containing a 56,000 square foot Kroger Supermarket, bank and office buildings, shops and popular restaurants such as Truffles and Chow Daddy’s. It was developed with an eye toward a Lowcountry architectural style that dramatically sets it apart from all other retail developments in the market. Berkeley Place (106 Buckwalter Parkway): This popular mixed-use development includes a movie theatre, shops, restaurants and more. Kittie’s Crossing (25 Bluffton Road): Home to many popular national chains, including Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Payless ShoeSource. 48 HHIGO.COM

Old Town (Calhoun and Promenade streets): Comprised of one-square mile, Old Town Bluffton includes Calhoun Street, which runs from scenic Highway 46 to the May River, and the newly built, but looks old, Promenade. This is a fun and interesting area to shop. Calhoun Street is home to the Bluffton Farmer’s Market, where you can find beautiful produce and locally made goods. 

onsider the typical visitor, on the island for a quick getaway and often intent on chasing golf balls, surviving beach bike rambles and maybe savoring an evening libation or two listening to Jimmy Buffett cover tunes at some torch-lighted island eatery. Cool. We can do that. And very well, thank you. But, as so many can attest, today’s tourist often becomes tomorrow’s year-round resident, and once they get past “Margaritaville,” they’ll discover local musicians playing original rock, blues and electronic dance music in venues that are off the beaten path and bear no artistic connection to Mr. B or the hormone-fueled Barmuda Triangle. World-class musicians work nightly at the Jazz Corner, serving up swing, trad-jazz standards and rhythm & blues for more seasoned locals and visitors, but if you’re in the mood for much older classics, track down the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, now in its 34th season playing at First Presbyterian Church. There’s also the well-regarded Hilton Head Choral Society and the well-attended International Piano Competition that draws some of the world’s finest young players to First Presbyterian. And the Hilton Head Dance Theater further bolsters our cultural credibility. The Heritage Golf Tournament remains our biggest tourist (and traffic) draw, but soon-arriving data will show that visitor counts for productions at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina have pushed that venue firmly into second place. “I always enjoy going to plays at the Coastal Discovery Museum Arts Center because you get such ARNO DIMMLING high-quality productions performed in such an intimate setting,” said long-time island resident Isabel Mangan. Folks looking for more progressive one-act productions can turn to South Carolina Repertory where Hank Haskell and spouse seat barely 70 patrons in a tiny theater on Beach City Road. The Art League of Hilton Head, which shares space with the Arts Center, displays all manner of paintings, jewelry and artworks on a rotating basis and there’s a growing roster of smaller galleries scattered about the island. Our museum scene is anchored by the pastoral Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn just as financing continues to grow toward creating a full-fledge Gullah Museum that truly celebrates our diverse culture. “Years ago this was just a beach town,” said Sheri Sternitzke, chairman of the Main Street Theater that incorporates nonequity actors aged five to 82 for its annual productions. “Now we’re becoming year-round and I think a lot of people are amazed by how much we now have to offer. And there’s going to be more to come.” No doubt this short-form essay has excluded deserving additions, but here’s a tip for a more encompassing look at island cultural offerings: The Arts and Cultural Council of Hilton Head operates a website/calendar about upcoming events in almost every category.  52 HHIGO.COM

DIRECTORY HOTELS

where to stay V

BY TIM WATSON

isiting the Lowcountry? First you need to determine the right type of place to stay. There are a variety of accommodation types on Hilton Head Island. From intimate boutique inns to sprawling timeshare resorts, oceanfront rental homes and four and five-star hotels, accommodations on Hilton Head Island have enough variety to please every travel style and budget.

HOTELS Usually located oceanfront, the full service hotel offers a wide array of services, housekeeping, room service, full service in house restaurants and a variety of shops, along with concierge services and various spas, recreational facilities and children’s activities. The Westin in Port Royal Plantation, Marriott and Omni in Palmetto Dunes Plantation, Sonesta in Shipyard Plantation and the Holiday Inn Beach House by Coligny circle are examples. Prices vary by the season. A number of Hilton Head hotels have just undergone major renovations, refreshing the look and feel of the popular resorts. The Westin underwent a $30 million renovation with an improved pool, deck and fitness studio. The Sonesta also underwent a $30 million renovation resulting in an expanded pool deck and terrace surrounding a lagoon-style pool, a shade pool as well as new cabanas, outdoor beds and umbrellas. Other major oceanfront resorts have recently completed extensive renovations, including the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Hotel’s $17 million renovation adding a third pool and renovations to all 323 guest rooms. The Beach House completed a $5 million renovation of its 202 guest rooms and public spaces. The Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa underwent a renovation as well. Others resorts have plans to begin renovations in the near future. If you are looking for something a bit smaller, boutique inns located in Sea Pines at Harbour Town and South Beach, offer a charm all their own though a bit further from the beach. With luxuries befi ting the finest hotels, The Inn at Harbour Town offers a unique variety of first-class accommodations within The Sea Pines Resort. Traditional chain hotel/motels are located mainly along the 278 corridor, and are outside of the plantations. Prices are lower than the full service hotels, but you will not have the same amenities as the larger resorts.

RENT A HOME Vacation home and villa rentals are available in most of the South End plantations. From oceanfront homes and villas to off-the-beaten-path destinations you can decide based upon your budget and desired amenities, beach, tennis, golf, fishing Don’t be afraid of the larger 6-8 bedroom homes as they can be split by multiple families and the prices won’t work out as high as you might think. Or, look for a vacation villa. Here, you can rent a fully furnished home, enjoy the extra space to spread out and the full size kitchen. If you are a tennis or golf lover, you can often rent a villa close to the course. Several rental companies on the island specialize in helping you find the perfect vacation home, whether it is a cozy villa for one or two persons or a sevenbedroom spacious home for a family. Be sure to give them a call; they are very knowledgable of the different areas and can help you find the perfect rental. In fact, it’s very common for families to

use rental homes on Hilton Head Island as the perfect place for a family reunion where they enjoy the extra space, kitchen facilities and a personal pool. Hilton Head rental homes can offer

an oceanfront view, pet-friendly accommodations or condos and villas with golf course views. No matter your preference — hotel or rental home — there is something for everyone. 

any Hilton Head Island and Bluffton residents were once visitors, like you. They just never left. And why should you? The quality of life here is very high. Here are 10 reasons why you should consider making this your new home.

1. PEACE OF MIND As the world around us seems to get more turbulent, there is something very reassuring about living in Bluffton, Hilton Head or anywhere in between Beaufort and Savannah. Our world in the Lowcountry seems pretty darn normal, and for once, that is a really good thing.

2. NATURAL BEAUTY There are only a few places in North America that can rival the beautiful surroundings we live in. Mother Nature blessed us with incredible beaches, pristine tidal creeks, calming marshes, pluff mud and Spanish moss. Great vision and planning allows us to live in harmony with all the natural beauty.

3. CLIMATE Winter here is unpredictable. It can be 80 degrees one day and 30 degrees the next. Compared to the road-blocking snowstorms just a few hours to the north though, we’ve got

it pretty good. Conditions greatly improve in April and stay really nice through the end of October. We also have many nice and sunny days November through March. You will have to travel south of Vero Beach to find warmer weather.

4. GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY Direct flights from SAV now include 13 major destinations: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Memphis, Miami, NYC, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington. Within driving distance we can access three growing metropolitan areas — Atlanta, Charlotte and Jacksonville. We can escape to acres and acres of nature in the rural areas of South Carolina and the charms of the mountains of North Carolina. We are nestled between the two most historic and architecturally beautiful cities in the south — Charleston and Savannah. With the widening of U.S. 17, access is becoming easier than ever.

5. GROWING ECONOMIC DIVERSITY We still heavily depend on the two main drivers of our economy — tourism and retirement. But new trends are emerging. Young people and families in their prime choose the Lowcountry as their nesting grounds. They bring with them their talents, ideas and energy; combined with the ability to work remotely, this will create a more diversified economic picture and will drive the median age down. The Don Ryan Center for Innovation (also referred to as Bluffton incubator) is just one example of how the region is actively trying to cultivate a spirit of entrepreneurship and make it part of what will drive the future.

6. SAVANNAH HOSTS 12 MILLION VISITORS A YEAR Savannah’s relatively recent surge as a major getaway destination will have a trickle-down effect for our regions as millions of people who haven fallen in love with the “Southern Charm” will be looking for a different experience and/or consider a longer vacation.

7. CULTURAL, RECREATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL CHOICES It was only 10 years ago when our choices were very fairly limited when it came to active sports, cultural and educational choices. No longer so. Regardless of what you want to learn or do or experience, chances are you can find an event, a place or club, a class or a teacher to make it happen.

8. THE MAKER AND LOCAL MOVEMENT Tired of the cheaply mass-produced and imported stuff, there is a resurgence of “do it yourself and sell it” going on all over America, and the Lowcountry is a fertile ground for such endeavors. You would be amazed of all the interesting products that are produced right here or within a 100 mile radius.

9. 10,000 BABY BOOMERS A DAY RETIRE Yes, these are the official statistics and it will continue at this pace for almost two decades (begging the question if it will bankrupt Social Security). The profile of the typical retiree however has changed. Not only will they live longer, they are vibrant, still wanting to change the world and become an important part of the fabric of our community, bringing with them not only their assets, but experience, connections and in some cases attract the following generation to move here as well.

10. WELCOMING PEOPLE AND INTELLECTUAL DIVERSITY One of the reasons people have chosen the Lowcountry as their place of choice is because we are a very welcoming community attracting a wide variety of people who have lived all over the world before moving here, which simply makes it a more interesting place to live than many other areas.  FALL/WINTER 2016 63
