MUSIC DIRECTOR & PRINCIPAL CONDUCTOR JOHN MORRIS RUSSELL 33rd Se ason • 2014 - 2015 • w w w.hhso.org For me, music is about passionate narrative. Whether its favorite Shakespearian epics set by Mendelssohn and Verdi, or an intensely emotional journey from tragedy to triumph crafted by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky in their fifth symphonies--the live symphonic experience leaves none unmoved. The 2014-2015 Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra season, Music of Dreams and Drama, explores some of the most emotionally intense works created for orchestra. From the brooding yet heroic Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 to effervescent overtures by Bernstein and Mozart, and etherial works for string orchestra by Dvorák and Arvo Pärt, the dramatic range of my third season with the HHSO is breathtaking. Our featured soloists, including favorites from the Hilton Head International Piano Competition, and returning virtuosos Danielle Belen, violin and Kisma Jordon, soprano will delight. My good friend Chris Wilkins will guest conduct the noble Sibelius Symphony No. 5 and I’ll be spinning sparkling classics by Haydn and Prokofiev. Back by popular demand are our Holiday Popular Classics in December and February’s dazzling display of guitar virtuosity in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue transcribed for two guitars. The Lowcountry is blessed to have an orchestra engaged in such fervent music making and I am thrilled to share our joy and passion with all of you. I look forward to having you join us as we all dream together.
Happy Listening!
