The list of health professionals you’re supposed to see in your lifetime tends to grow as you age, but how often should you see each one? Family Doctor How often to go: If you’re not sick, once a year for annual check-ups and flu shots, or several times a year if you’re suffering from illnesses, need immunity shots or are pregnant. The details: Doctors are often the first people you visit as soon as something goes wrong. Coughs, runny noses, back pains and the flu shot — you doctor can both treat these ailments or refer you to a specialist who can help. Annual checkups are also recommended once a year to update your family doctor with your weight, height and any changes in your blood, for example. Dermatologist How often to go: Once a year, and in warmer months if you’re seeking advice on skin protection from the sun. The details: According to skin experts, how often you see a dermatologist depends on the purpose of your visit. If you’re curious about the condition of your skin overall or have general inquires, once a year is sufficient. But if you’re worried about skin spots or acne, make an appointment right away, he said in an article on iVillage.com. Gynecologist How often to go: Once a year or every three years (depending on your situation) — for many women, their general practitioner (GP) is sufficient. The details: Women over the age of 18 (both sexually active and not) should see a gynecologist (or someone with whom to discuss reproductive concerns) at least once a year, according to Everyday Health. 4 Habits That Destroy Your Smile 1. Not flossing Brushing your teeth twice a day is important, but many patients don’t realize that flossing at least once a day is just as critical to achieving — and maintaining — a healthy smile. Flossing removes the cavity-causing bacteria left behind from food particles that get stuck between teeth. 2. Brushing too soon after eating Consuming acidic foods and beverages, such as sports and energy drinks, citrus fruits, wine, and tomatoes, can erode tooth enamel — the glossy outer layer of the tooth. Brushing your teeth too soon after eating and drinking these items can cause more damage because you are essentially brushing the acid into the teeth, not getting rid of it. Instead, you should rinse your mouth with water after consuming acidic foods and beverages and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your pearly whites! 3. Excessively bleaching your teeth Overzealous bleaching can cause your teeth to look unnaturally white and increase tooth sensitivity. Before using an at-home bleaching product, talk to your dentist. 4. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush A hard-bristled toothbrush coupled with an aggressive brushing technique can cause irreversible damage to your gums. Use a soft toothbrush and gently brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle, in a circular motion. Using a back-and-forth, sawing motion causes the gums to recede, and can expose the root of the tooth, making teeth extremely sensitive.

Simple Changes for Lifelong Health The journey to lifelong health starts with but one small step – and then one leads to another. A positive change here, an unhealthy habit dropped there, and before you know it, you’re travelling down a healthier path. That’s how it should be. Radical overhaul is overwhelming, but small, simple changes are oh-so doable. These are a few of our favorite ways to ease into health. Start with one. When you see what a big impact a humble change can make, you might be ready to tackle the whole list. After all, it’s the little things, right? Add nutrient-rich foods Before you think about what to take away from your diet, first consider what to add: minimally processed greens and colorful veggies to every meal – and eat those first. As your body fills up on these nutrient-rich foods, you’ll have less room for the other stuff. Limit processed and refined foods Does it come in a package? Then chances are, that food has been refined and processed, which, unfortunately results in nutrient loss. Concentrate on whole foods in their natural forms, such as fruits and vegetables. If it looks like it did when it grew from the earth, that’s your cue that it’s a healthier choice. Replace white flour Begin to switch out white flour (and foods made with it) for whole grains. Instead of reaching for regular pasta, try a whole-wheat variety instead (look for “100 percent whole,” “whole durum wheat” or “whole semolina” on the package). Baking? Use whole wheat, spelt or buckwheat flour – and throw in a handful of millet for added texture. Whole flours are higher in good-for-you fiber, minerals (like magnesium) and B vitamins than their refined cousins. Can’t eat wheat? No worries: There are plenty of wheat-free options, from brown-rice or quinoa pasta to oat, teff or chickpea flours. Explore new grains Don’t stop with the flour and pasta. Stage a white out for other grains, too. (So long, white rice!) Replace with one of the myriad whole grains, which also happen to be healthier. Healthy Sleep Tips Healthy sleep habits can make a big difference in your quality of life. Having healthy sleep habits is often referred to as having good “ sleep hygiene.” Try to keep the following sleep practices on a consistent basis: Stick to the same bedtime and wake up time, even on the weekends. This helps to regulate your body’s clock and could help you fall asleep and stay asleep for the night. Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual. A relaxing, routine activity right before bedtime conducted away from bright lights helps separate your sleep time from activities that can cause excitement, stress or anxiety which can make it more difficult to fall asleep, get sound and deep sleep or remain asleep. Avoid naps , especially in the afternoon. Power napping may help you get through the day, but if you find that you can’t fall asleep at bedtime, eliminating even short catnaps may help. Exercise daily. Vigorous exercise is best, but even light exercise is better than no activity. Exercise at any time of day, but not at the expense of your sleep. Evaluate your room. Design your sleep environment to establish the conditions you need for sleep. Your bedroom should be cool – between 60 and 67 degrees. Your bedroom should also be free from any noise that can disturb your sleep. Finally, your bedroom should be free from any light. Check your room for noises or other distractions. This includes a bed partner’s sleep disruptions such as snoring. Consider using blackout curtains, eye shades, ear plugs, “white noise” machines, humidifiers, fans and other devices. Use bright light to help manage your circadian rhythms. Avoid bright light in the evening and expose yourself to sunlight in the morning. This will keep your circadian rhythms in check. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and heavy meals in the evening. Alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine can disrupt sleep. Eating big or spicy meals can cause discomfort from indigestion that can make it hard to sleep. It is good to finish eating at least 2-3 hours before bedtime.
