from the publisher Winter is a great season here in the South. While we might not remember when it was snowing hard enough to count the snowflakes, we can enjoy some chillier days when we get to wear a sweater and crave some comfort food. With average high temperatures in the low 60’s it is nice to walk relatively empty beaches; our winter season can be still full of sunny days and even sleeveless shirts. Whether you are here for golf or tennis, a business trip, a weekend getaway or just a day of fun in the sun with the family, you will soon understand what makes Hilton Head Island so special at any season of the year. Meander through Sea Pines Forest Preserve on horseback. Rent a bike and take advantage of more than 60-plus miles of multi-use trails. Explore Broad Creek and Calibogue Sound sailing, on a kayak or go fishing, parasailing or dolphin watching. Challenge yourself and fly through the trees with Zipline and Aerial Adventure. Along with 12 miles of unspoiled public beaches, the island is also home to a vast array of wildlife, including alligators, deer, loggerhead sea turtles, dolphins and hundreds of species of birds and butterflies. If you are looking for something to do after all the outdoors, our island offers an unusual number of cultural opportunities for a community its size, including a highly rated Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, a world-class jazz club The Jazz Corner, a 120-member full chorus, Broadway-quality plays at The Arts Center, first class galleries and our growing public art exhibit along Wlm. Hilton Pwy. It is not always easy to find all these attractions and events. That’s where we come in. We have improved Fork & Fun Vacation Guide as a glossy, full magazine size publication to make it the one-stop publication for where to go, what to do, where to eat and other insider tips. Please be sure to pick up one of our sister publications Fork & Fun Restaurants and the Fork & Fun Visitor Map; visit our website www.forkandfun.com and download our Fork & Fun App! We are glad you are here and hope you enjoy your vacation on this wonderful island. If you’re like us, you may decide to stick around and become a part of our community. After all most of us locals were tourists first who decided to stay.

getaway
Winter on Hilton Head Island. While the vast majority of the islands visitors come in the other three seasons, Winter is a wonderful time to visit the Island.
Have the beach all to yourself. Or so it may seem. With average high temperatures in the low 60’s for the majority of the winter it’s nice to walk the relatively empty beaches, with a light sweater. For the hearty beach bums water temperatures can feel like Nantucket in June. You can bring your dog anytime of day and as long as he’s under “positive voice control” leash laws are relaxed as well. Late afternoon will find local kids playing pickup football and baseball games on the beach and Moms and Dads trying to stretch every last minute of sunshine out of the weekends. 8
www.forkandfun.com
With swimmers all but absent it’s also one of the best times to surf fish.
welcome
With red drum, flounder and other local fish feeding in close it’s a great time of the year for some lazy day fishing. A nice surf rig, some live or frozen bait, and most importantly a comfy beach chair and a cooler you can while away an afternoon. Bring a good book and you might not care if you don’t catch anything. If you want to get out on the water, renting a small boat from one of the local marinas is a great winter time option to get up in the creeks and find the reds or go shrimping. It’s also a great way to orient yourself with the island from “the other side”. If you don’t want to be your own skipper there are an abundance of charter boats available for groups of any size, be it dolphin watching, fishing or just taking a ride, there is a boat for your budget.
Golf at your pace. With the golf courses open and not as much pressure as a summer time round you can play 18 holes in record time, or perhaps drop an extra ball here and there. We won’t tell. Greens fees are dramatically reduced from the summer time and lessons are priced accordingly. With some of the grasses dormant it can also be a great time to break out those orange balls that you always seem to get as Christmas presents.
Hit Some Balls Our local tennis scene barely misses a beat in the winter. With more than 300 courts on Hilton Head Island one cannot go far without hitting a tennis court. Instructors for all levels of play are here and you can always find a game regardless of your skill level. With most days reaching 60 degrees or more you can work up a good sweat.
Hit the Trails With more than 60 miles of bike trails and an assortment of rental shops, biking the beach and trails is also a great way to spend an afternoon. In the winter people often enjoy the chance to bike the beach, with our hard packed sand it’s a comfortable bike ride for bikers of all ages.
Dining Out With the summer time traffic gone most restaurants have little to no wait, so try out something new or visit one of your old favorites. With so many new dining establishments on the Island, try something new this trip. From fresh-mex, to local seafood, to good old fashioned pub grub, whatever you’re in the mood for we’ve got it. It’s also oyster time in the low country so don’t forget to try some local oysters, roasted or on the half shell, preferably both. Winter on Hilton Head Island is a great time to reconnect with the Island at your own pace, be it over the Holidays, or just a ong weekend, you will find your old friend just as you left it, but a little better. vacation guide

Visiting Hilton Head? First you need to determine the right type of place to stay. There are a variety of accommodation types on Hilton Head Island. From intimate boutique inns to sprawling timeshare resorts, oceanfront rental homes and four and five-star hotels, accommodations on Hilton Head Island have enough variety to please every travel style and budget.
Hotels The full service Hotel. Usually located ocean front, the full service hotel offers a wide array of services, housekeeping, room service, full service in house restaurants and a variety of shops, along with concierge services and various spas, recreational facilities and children’s activities. The Westin in Port Royal Plantation, Marriott and Omni in Palmetto Dunes Plantation, Sonesta in Shipyard Plantation, and the Holiday Inn Beach House by Coligny circle are examples. Prices vary by the season. A number of Hilton Head hotels have just undergone major renovations, refreshing the look and feel of the popular resorts. The Westin Resort and Spa underwent a $30 million renovation with an improved pool, deck and fitness studio. Room improvements include adding Westin Heavenly Beds, new headboards with LED reading lights, a soaking tub for the bathrooms, ergonomically designed chair and desk, and an iPod docking station. The Sonesta Resort also underwent a $30 million renovation resulting in an expanded pool deck and terrace surrounding a lagoon-style pool (see left), a shade pool as well as new cabanas, outdoor beds and umbrellas. All 340 rooms and suites were overhauled with bathroom improvements, new floors and beds. The hotel also offers a junior ballroom, technology lounge, and full-service spa. Other major oceanfront resorts have recently completed extensive renovations, including the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Hotel’s $17 million renovation adding a third pool and renovations to all 323 guest rooms. The Beach House completed a $5 million renovation of its 202 guest rooms and public spaces. The Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa underwent a renovation as well. Others resorts have plans to begin renovations in the near future. If you are looking for something a bit smaller, boutique inns located in Sea Pines at Harbour Town and South Beach in Sea Pines offer the same level of service though a bit further from the beach, offer a charm all their own. Perfect for a romantic getaway or a peaceful week away. Traditional chain hotel/motels are located mainly along the 278 corridor, and are outside of the Plantations. Prices are lower than the full service hotels, but you will not have the same amenities as the larger resorts. vacation guide

stay
Rent a Home Vacation home and villa rentals are available in most of the South End Plantations. From ocean front homes and villas to off the beaten path destinations you can decide based upon your budget and desired amenities, beach, tennis, golf, fishing. Don’t be afraid of the larger 6-8 bedroom homes as they can be split by multiple families and the prices won’t work out as high as you might think. Or, look for a vacation villa. Here, you can rent a fully furnished home, enjoy the extra space to spread out and the full size kitchen. If you are a tennis or golf lover, you can often rent a villa close to the course. Several rental companies on the island specialize in helping you find the perfect vacation home, whether it is a cozy villa for one or two persons or a seven-bedroom spacious home for a family. Be sure to give them a call, they are very knowledgable to the different areas and can help you find the perfect rental. In fact, it’s very common for families to use rental homes on Hilton Head Island as the perfect place for a family reunion where they enjoy the extra space, kitchen facilities and a personal pool. Hilton Head rental homes can offer an oceanfront view, pet-friendly accommodations or condos and villas with golf course views. No matter your preference—hotel or rental home—there is something for everyone. 12

While the Island only measures about 12 miles long by 5 miles wide visitors can enjoy nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails accessible to all. In addition, there are close to 50 miles of paths behind the gates of private communities like Shipyard, Sea Pines, and Palmetto Dunes. The flat terrain and the bike path system make it very easy to ride on the bike paths, however many visitors find the best place to pedal is on the beach. Enjoy a bike ride on the hard packed sand near the water line at low tide. It is great fun and it offers a spectacular view. You might even see some dolphins! There are miles of beautiful bike paths open to all waiting for you to explore.
Rent or Bring your Own While it is common to see vehicles coming onto the Island packed with luggage and bicycles most visitors to the Island rent their bikes. There are many local bike rentals companies to choose from offering a wide variety of bikes at affordable rates. The smallest family member can enjoy a trailer, tagalong, training wheels, or mini-cruiser. Adults can choose from beach cruisers, tandems, mountain bikes, hybrids, and more. Most bicycle rental companies offer free bike locks, delivery and pick up. All offer helmets. A few companies offer bike rentals by the hour, or by the day. All offer weekly rentals.
Rules of the Road First and foremost, be a safe rider. Please pay attention to traffic lights, crosswalks, and stop signs. There are small stop signs posted for bicyclists safety on the pathways, and it is never safe to cross anywhere other than at a marked crosswalk.

7 BEST BIKE RIDES
ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND
... AS SELECTED BY LOCAL BIKE EXPERTS RON KNIGHT AND FRANK BABEL
2.
1. MOST SCENIC RIDE The boardwalk at Barker Field overlooking the marsh is simply amazing. If you’re on the south end, visit the “toe” of the island on the beach looking at the entrance to South Beach Marina. You’ll see Harbour Town in the distance, Daufuskie Island dead ahead and the Atlantic to the left. 2. BEST BEACH TO CYCLE Start at Palmetto Dunes, hit the beach and travel south to the tip of the island at South Beach — preferably with the wind at your back. Assuming cooperation from the tides and tourists, this is as good as it gets.
1. 3.
3. BEST NATURE TRAIL The rice dike trail in Sea Pines to the horse stables and into the Sea Pines Forest Preserve is incredibly rich in natural beauty, and it’s often almost empty.

Then turn right along the pathway and follow Arrow Road across the William Hilton Parkway to the Palmetto Bay Marina and back; you’ll stay off the main drags and discover a lengthy hidden ribbon of trail behind the shops and restaurants. For an alternate route, turn onto the William Hilton Parkway from New Orleans Road, follow the pathways to the Shelter Cove Marina and back. 5. BEST EXERCISE The Bike Doctor’s organized rides provide a great workout; riders leave the shop on New Orleans Road at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Stop 1: Harbour Town and Harbour Town Pier Harbour Town may be the best known of Hilton Head’s scenic attractions. The marina is a popular stop and Harbour Town has numerous shops and several restaurants. There is a pier at the base of the lighthouse that will take you well out into Calibogue Sound. It is almost like being in a boat without leaving shore. Stop 2: Baynard Ruins Park Baynard Ruins Park is on your right just after you pass Baynard Cove Road and Marsh Drive. Park your car at the entrance, and explore the ruins of the pre-Civil War home of William E. Baynard. The ruins consist of foundations left when a Confederate raiding party razed the structure following the occupation of Hilton Head by Union forces during the Civil War. The Baynard home had been the long-time headquarters of a 2,450-acre cotton plantation. Stop 3: South Beach Village Located on South Sea Pines Drive, South Beach Village is a New England–style shopping center. When you reach South Beach Village, you may wish to stop for a stroll. You will find boats, charming shops, fun restaurants and an overall atmosphere that is both pleasant and rather quaint.
scenic tour Stop 7: Mitchelville and Fish Haul Creek Park The first self-govered freedmen’s town in America was Mitchelville, and its historical significance is remembered with an informational kiosk at Mitchelville Freedom Park. The kiosk is located inside of Fish Haul Creek Park, near the end of Beach City Road by the airport. There is an observation deck, a picnic pavilion restrooms and walking trails. Stop 8: Fort Mitchel Fort Mitchel, deep in Hilton Head Plantation, is the last stop on the scenic tour. Please note that the security staff will not admit you to visit Fort Mitchel after dark or if you arrive at dusk. Fort Mitchel, built in 1863, served as a base for the Union Blockade of Confederate supplies to Savannah and Charleston. It is a classic example of a seacoast earthworks gun battery of the Civil War era. The remains of the earthworks plus two Civil War cannons are at the Fort Mitchel site. Pathways wind among the ruins, with signs along the way to explain the significance of each section. End of Your Tour If you see some areas you especially like, why not return to them for a longer visit?
Stop 4: Coligny Plaza Coligny Plaza is one of the island’s most popular locations to dine, shop and unwind. It is considered Hilton Head’s “downtown.” Many popular restaurants and shops are located here, along with a one-screen movie theater. There are more than 60 shops and restaurants and entertainment is provided nightly. Stop 5: Palmetto Bay Marina A full-service marina offering dockage, laundry facilities, charters, water activities, shopping, restaurants and boat repair. Established in 1959, Palmetto Bay Marina is the oldest marina on the island. It is located at 86 Helmsman Way. Stop 6: Shelter Cove Harbour Shelter Cove Harbour, a Mediterranean-style harborside village, is another area where you should park your car and take a pleasant stroll. Shelter Cove boasts numerous shops and restaurants, boats and yachts, and lovely water vistas. If you visit during the day, consider returning in the evening for Harbourfest. Entertainment nightly with Firweworks on most Tuesdays during the summer season.

the French and the Gullah lived on the island before the land developers arrived. Take a walk on the boardwalks between the butterfly enclosures and tranquil marshes and learn about castnetting and alligators—your kids will forget those online status updates and focus on nature. You could take a quick boat trip to Daufuskie Island to get a glimpse of what the Sea Islands were like before bridges and causeways led to land development. Many native residents of Daufuskie who have made their living oystering and fishing for decades are descendants of freed slaves. For active families, enjoy an eco-kayak trip or stand-up paddle board tour through salt marsh estuaries where you may see bald eagles, hawks and osprey. Other water activities such as dolphin sightseeing tours and sailing trips are especially popular with the young and the old alike. Sport fishing, photographic cruises and catamaran cruises are also available. Kite flying is a popular winter activity. Just head to the beach where it’s always breezy. The wide-open spaces and a flat beach terrain and make the perfect spot to fly a kite. Be sure to visit Aerial Adventure Hilton Head where you can choose from 50 in-the-tree challenging activities on six self22

guided, harnessed and helmeted courses ranging from easy to hard. They offer something for everyone whether you are a five-year-old child or an experienced Marine. Thrill seekers also will enjoy ZipLine Hilton Head, an ecotourism attraction offering an adventuresome canopy tour. The island’s only zip line; ZipLine Hilton Head is one experience the entire family will be talking about for years to come. The two-hour tour takes visitors on an exciting canopy ride through the tops of sea pines and ancient Live Oaks while offering views of the water, marshes and boats of Broad Creek. Soar on eight zip lines inter-connected by platforms and trees. Professional ZipLine personnel attach the safety equipment so visitors can relax while flying through the trees and marveling at the natural beauty which makes Hilton Head so special. Ride a horse, or just pet one at Lawton Stables. Take an escorted Western-style trail ride through the beautiful forest preserve in the heart of Sea Pines Plantation. Trail rides are available to visitors eight years and older. For the younger set, Lawton Stables offers pony rides around the corral. The horses and ponies at Lawton Stables are friendly and will stand at the fence to greet visitors. If you have carrots or apples, you can meet Harley, the Clydesdale at the Paddock for a snack.
things to do Be sure to visit Lawton Stables’ small animal farm which is free to Sea Pines visitors. Residents include llamas, goats, sheep, donkeys, pot-bellied pigs, chickens, rabbits and a pet deer named “Callie.” If you are looking for some indoor activities, you can always take in a movie. Hilton Head has three movie theaters: Park Plaza Cinema with six screens located near the main gate to Sea Pines, the Coligny Theater which is usually showing something a little move avant garde and North Ridge Plaza Theater, 10 screens and all 10 of the now have recliner style seating, not enjoying Fast and Furious 6 as much as the first 5? North Ridge and their new seats offer the best napping on Hilton Head Island. The Sand Box on Pope Avenue is an interactive Children’s Museum and offers a great time for the younger kids and adults on a rainy day, or for that matter any day. It’s interactive so get ready to get involved. Your kids will love pretending to steer the pirate ship, land an airplane or create a masterpiece in their art room. Other exhibits include future builders, an aquarium, a junior bankers area and many more. You can also visit the Batter’s Box an indoor batting cage in Southwood Plaza. Work out the kinks in your swing, find out if you can hit an 80 mph fastball, or work the slo-pitch
softball swing to get back in shape for spring. No matter which activity you choose, you’re sure to have a great day.

Daufuskie Island Located approximately one nautical mile, or a 30-minute boat ride from Hilton Head Daufuskie feels a world away. Accessible only by boat, there is no bridge to the Island. There are few cars, fewer restaurants, no supermarkets, and a lot of history and wildlife.

Biked and beached enough? Need a break from the sun? Visit our neighbors next door in Bluffton and Daufuskie.
Artifacts suggest Native Americans inhabited the Island 10,000 years ago. They remained on Daufuskie until the 1800’s. The English arrived in South Carolina in the late 1600’s and began plantations to the Sea Island, including Daufuskie. By the time the Civil War broke out there were seven working cotton plantations on the Island. By the end of the War the Island was inhabited primarily by freed slaves who were from Western Africa, or “Gullahs”. The isolation of Daufuskie Island allowed the slaves to keep their native culture alive, and today the Island is one of the few places in the United States where the Gullah culture still exists. Today, Daufuskie Island is a mix of modern residential developments and native Islanders. Many roads are still dirt and many of the 300 full time residents use golf carts as their primary means of transportation. A day of exploring Daufuskie may include a visit to the two room school house Pat Conroy made famous in his memoir The Water is Wide, a visit to the Old African Church, a stop at an art gallery, a visit to a deserted beach, a taste of Daufuskie deviled crab, and so much more.
Bluffton Just over the bridge, Bluffton was originally settled in the early 1800’s as a summer refuge for Lowcountry plantation owners. The high bluffs of the May River provided protection from both the heat and the insects while the waterway offered easy access to and from Savannah and Charleston. The May River is a pristine waterway and a wonderful and picturesque place to kayak, sail, fish, or stand up paddleboard. You might find a sharks tooth in the banks of the May. Access the river via the Alljoy Boat Landing, located at the end of County Road 13. One of the most beautiful Plantation Homes from Planter’s era is open to visitors. Rose Hill Mansion was built in the gothic style and designed by the same architect that created Bluffton’s Church of the Cross on Calhoun Street. Originally built in the late 1850s, the Rose Hill Mansion is furnished with period furniture and memorabilia from original owner James Brown Kirk. Comprised of one-square mile, Old Town Bluffton is a fun and interesting area to shop and explore. Calhoun Street is the heart of Old Town and has shops, restaurants and galleries to discover. The Bluffton Farmer’s Market is where you can find beautiful produce and locally made baked goods and other treats every Thursday afternoon.

Come see why Bluffton’s official slogan is the“Heart of the Lowcountry.”
If the ride over to Daufuskie weren’t enjoyable enough, passing beautiful homes, seeing smaller islands, watching the dolphins swimming along side the boat; then the experiences on Daufuskie Island will definitely make you glad you chose to make a trip to one of the most scenic and historical islands on the East Coast. There are buses to take you in comfort around the island, and golf carts to allow you to experience the island on your own. Maybe just enjoying the quiet breezes as you lounge outside at one of the picnic tables overlooking Calibogue Sound will be one of your lasting memories. Daufuskie Island is a beautiful location for a wedding, reunion, graduation party, family gathering or any fun occasion. Special discounted rates are available for groups. Consider spending the night in one of the comfortable air-conditioned Daufuskie Crab Cottages. “Rustic elegance” away from it all and an experience you’ll love sharing with your friends when you get back home.

Many locals and visitors agree that the single greatest attraction here is the water. The creeks, rivers, sounds, ocean, lagoons, ponds, salt marshes and wetlands provide a bounty of outdoor adventures for everyone of all ages. Some are content just to look at it-they relish the simple pleasure of knowing that it’s there. Others, however, enjoy getting out on the rivers, sea, sounds and tidal creeks that make this place what it is. If you belong to this second category, there are plenty of boating adventures to be had. Land a boat ride for a fun day of fishing with your family or friends. If you don’t have your own resources check in with a local outfitter for dolphin and nature boat cruises, fishing and sailboat charters, kayaking, sport crabbing and shrimping, parasailing, waterskiing, tubing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding, jet skiing, power boating and guided nature tours. Other popular wakesports are kneeboarding and tubing. Kayaking is an excellent way to explore the many small creeks that snake through the marsh, skirting uninhabited islands and leading you to hard-to-reach places that harbour the 28

shyest of wildlife. There are a number of good kayak outfitters and guide services, while experienced kayakers can simply taker their boat to one of the many public landings and drift into the blue. We recommend launching at Shelter Cove Marina, located roughly in the middle of Broad Creek. Be sure to go against the tide on your way out and use the tide on your way back. Your arms will thank you later. Bring your surfboard out to the beach and ride the natural rhythm of waves and tides. Or combine the pure horsepower of a powerboat and your surfing skills for a fun, exciting day of wakeboarding. Bring your skimboard to the beach to glide across the water’s surface. Use momentum to meet incoming waves, breaking waves, and then catch back into shore in a manner similar to surfing. Try the up and coming extreme water sport kiteboarding. Speed is just one of the thrills that attract people to kiteboarding, which is a hybrid of kiting, surfing and wakeboarding. Participants seem to just fly across the water
while occasionally soaring out of the water for a jump or an impressive flip. The sport is not only fun to watch, but fun to do, and is becoming more and more popular on Hilton Head. With calm waves, favorable winds, no rocks and big sandy beaches, there is no better place to learn the sport. One of the most popular ways to get elevated around here is parasailing, allowing you the thrill of being up high, and the relaxation of sitting back, feeling the breeze and taking in the view. The parasailing experience is much more that just the time in the air. The boat ride itself can be an adventure. Spot egrets and dolphins as you drift through the open water. An excellent way to get out on the water, for those who don’t have their own boat, is to take a cruise. There are types of cruises for every taste: dolphin cruises, dinner cruises, booze cruises, singles cruises, benefit cruises, boat tours and multiday vacations along the Intracoastal Waterway. Drift past Bick Island’s Statue of Liberty, take the kids on a pirate adventure or book a trip to the historic Savannah riverfront. Most cruises are moderately priced. Enjoy the area’s unique natural beauty on a sailing adventure. Narrated, interactive sailing is offered on the Pau Hana Flying Circus, the island’s biggest catamaran sailboat. You can also set sail on the Carolina Moon, owned by Vagabond Cruises. Be sure to keep an eye out for the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin.

GO CRABBING ON THE CRABBER J II They laughed when I said I was going with the kids to catch some crabs. They are not laughing anymore. What we did was make reservations on the sport crabbing boat Crabber J II which departs out of Shelter Cove Harbour. Once everyone was on board, the Crabby crew untied the lines and we motored out to the calm waters of Broad Creek. Along the way we saw two dolphins playing. We anchored in the shallow water right next to the salt marsh and everyone fished for blue crabs. It was a lot of fun. The crabby crew kept score and a girl from Cincinnati won the world famous Crabber J II T-shirt cause she caught the most crabs. Please call for current prices.

Lagoon Fishing: Most of the lagoons on Hilton Head are brackish, meaning they are both fresh and salt water. Lagoons offer a unique fishing experience because of the variety of species you can hook. Don’t let the calm waters fool you; fish can grow to enormous sizes (red drum can weigh more than 50 pounds). Other fish caught in the lagoons include tarpon, striped bass, black drum and the occasional blue fish. Live bait such as shrimp and finger mullet are your best bets, but they are usually hard to come by unless you catch your own or are fishing off of a private charter boat. Spinning and top water lures fished with a lightweight spin rod are another popular option. If you have a few hours to spend on the water, a charter boat will supply you with all the equipment, bait, and know-how needed to land a monster.
Surf Fishing: There are a lot of junk fish (skates, rays, small sharks) in the Carolina surf, which can be thrilling to catch, but frustrating for those in pursuit of game fish. Red drum, kingfish, and flounder are some of the more prized fish that can be caught. Squid strips, minnows and bunker chunks are the most common types of bait used in the surf. They can be purchased at any tackle shop along with 2- to 3-ounce sinkers to combat the rough water. Don’t feel like you have to cast halfway to the horizon to catch fish, some of the biggest can be taken right out of the breaking waves. The best times to surf fish are early mornings and evenings, when the beach crowds have subsided and the fish are most active. 32
www.forkandfun.com
Offshore Fishing: If you are feeling particularly adventurous, and willing to spend a majority of the day surrounded by water, offshore fishing can provide some real thrills. Party boats generally accommodate large numbers of passengers, but private charters are also available (at a higher cost). Half and full day trips are typical. These trips generally target fish that are specific to the season, and can include marlin, tuna and cobia. Most offer specialized shark fishing trips all year. Your vessel may travel many miles out to sea, so be sure to have your Dramamine on hand if you are prone to sea-sickness.
Licenses and Regulations: South Carolina law requires that all anglers over the age of 16 have a state fishing license to fish from the surf or water banks. A 14 day license is $5 for residents and $11 for non-residents. Commercial fishing boats provide all their passengers with licenses. Private plantations and resorts usually restrict fishing to owners and guests, and each is subject to its own set of rules. For more information, go online to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources homepage, www.dnr.sc.gov.

beach
world-class
beaches With average high temperatures in the low 60’s for the majority of the winter it’s nice to walk the relatively empty beaches, with a light sweater. One reason to love the beach in the winter months is that you can bring your dog anytime of day and as long as he’s under “positive voice control.” Leash laws are relaxed as well. Check the signs at the beach entrances for more information. If you’re local, chances are you think of Coligny Beach as a place for tourists. But take another look: It’s one of the only beaches with free parking and amenities such as well-tended rest rooms and showers; a beautiful boardwalk that leads to the warm sand of the beach; rentable chairs and umbrellas; shielded benches and roomy swings make Coligny Beach a must-stop for people of all ages and places. Plus there are great tidal pools at low tide making it a great place for little beachgoers to spot sand dollars and splash around. Are you more of an explorer than a sunbather? Then Mitchelville Beach on the north end of the island is the place for you. A more primitive setting, the receding tides leave more pluff mud than sand, but the beach is teeming with horseshoe crabs, fish and other wildlife. Wear your water shoes and bring your dog—they’ll love it, too. All of Hilton Head Island’s beaches are public but access is often private. Seven of the beach parks on the island are readily accessible to the public.

Since 1969 when the PGA Tour first visited Hilton Head Island, it has been hard to think of Hilton Head Island without thinking also of golf. The now RBC Heritage (April 13-19, 2015) has been who by a veritable who’s who of golfing immortals. wonders
Sure, there’s plenty of golf around here, and everyone knows to stop at the Harbour Town lighthouse when in town. But if you venture off the marked trails every now and again, you’ll find that Hilton Head Island and the surrounding Lowcountry are filled with vast stores of hidden wonder, places and phenonema that don’t necessarily appear on all the tourist maps. Turtle Power Loggerhead Sea Turtles nest on Hilton Head Island beaches between May and August when the massive female turtles come ashore at night to find prime pieces of oceanfront real estate. The females will dig a nest, deposit their eggs (an average of 120), shield them from hungry predators with sand and quickly (well, relatively quickly) make their way back to the sea. Two months later, tiny two-inch turtle babies sneak out of the nest and point themselves instinctively toward the brightest light they see: their ocean home where they’ll spend the next 25 or 30 years growing to massive adulthood. Such a delicate process, as you might guess, is susceptible to dangers both natural and manmade, and local groups like the Hilton Head Island Sea Turtle Protection Project managed by the Coastal Discovery Museum keep a close eye on the reptiles’ nests from May through October. During that time, residents know to keep their beachfront lights off after 10 p.m., pick up their trash and, most of all, leave nest sites alone. Dolphin Strand Feeding Dolphins: cute, playful, friendly and when hungry— organized. The animals are certainly plentiful in local waters, particularly the Calibogue Sound which is kind of like a dolphin social club. Much rarer is a coordinated hunting behavior called strand feeding, which is unique in the world. Here’s how it works: At low tide, small groups of bottlenose dolphins herd hundreds of fish toward a beach. Then, all at once, the dolphins will leap onto the bank to create a huge wall of water and energy, feast on the fish buffet and, when done, shimmy back into the water. This isn’t something you’ll see on your average twilight beach stroll; guides and locals can point you to the largely 38

wild backwaters where it’s visible. Also, we should note that the phrase “leap” here indicates some sort of graceful natural phenomenon, but when this happens, it can be pretty startling. Braddock Point Cemetery Tucked away in Sea Pines Plantation is a small piece of history that tells a larger story about Hilton Head. Braddock Point Cemetery is a resting place for native AfricanAmericans, some of whom are thought to be descended from slaves. The small graveyard is really off the beaten path nestled between condo high-rises on Spinnaker Court off Lighthouse Lane. The graveyard gets its name from Captain David Cutler Braddock who commanded a ship named the “Beaufort” in the mid-1700s. Braddock sailed the Carolina coast keeping his eyes on Spanish activities and hiding out in a small cove which is now Sea Pines. There are about 40 gravestones in the Braddock cemetery; the headstone, which appears to be hand-chiseled, belongs to Susan Williams who was born in 1861 and died in 1921. The cemetery is still in use; Robert E. Williams was buried there in 2008. Singing Sands If you listen carefully while walking on the dunes of Hilton Head, you may discover that the sand sometimes “sings,” or produces audible sound vibrations that can be compared to the strains of a chorus, or the playing of violins. The idea is not a new one. Thoreau encountered singing sands while walking on an Atlantic Ocean beach; he noted that it sounded like rubbing a finger over wet glass. Charles Darwin was the first scientist to discuss the phenomenon. In his “A Naturalist’s Voyage Around the World,” he wrote: “Leaving Socego, we retraced our steps. Each time the horse put its foot on the sand, a chirping noise resulted.” The “singing” may be the consequence of billions of minute
feature
crystals rolled against each other by the wind. Or, since the sounds are sometimes more pronounced after sundown, it could be that the cooling of the sand at night creates shifts and settling in the dunes. In any event, the next time you go for a walk, keep your ears tuned for a secret island song. Mitchelville Hilton Head Island is packed with history that most tourists and even locals know little about. Mitchelville is a beautiful historical landmark. Formerly known as Drayton Plantation, Mitchelville came about with the aid of Union General Ormsby Mitchel after he helped a group of escaped slaves create their own town. Mitchelville was self-governing, with neatly arranged streets, one-quarter-acre lots, elected officials (some appointed by the Union military), a church, various laws addressing such issues as community behavior and sanitation, taxes were collected, and a compulsory education law for children between the ages of six and fifteen was enforced—most likely the first such law in the South. The residents named the town “Mitchelville” in honor of General Mitchel. Today local descendants of Mitchelville work to preserve and educate others about the historic landmark. Be sure to visit the Mitchelville Freedom Park located on Beach City Road. For more information on the Mitchelville Preservation Project visit online at www. mitchelvillepreservationproject.com.
Sea Pines Preseve Photo: Arno Dimmling
‘The Blank Spot on the Map’ When Charles Fraser first laid the foundation for what became Sea Pines, he did so with the philosophy that the natural state of the island would always come first. The homes and facilities of the resort, he believed, shouldn’t encroach on the marshes and forests that blanketed the island; they should co-exist with them. As if to drive the point home inside the resort lies the Sea Pines Forest Preserve, 605 acres of space where Fraser’s philosophy reaches its zenith and nature remains as unspoiled as it was when he developed the surrounding land. “It’s the blank spot of the map; you can see it in satellite photos. It stands out from thousands of feet above,” said David Henderson, wildlife biologist for Community Services Associates. But there’s plenty to explore in that blank spot. The Preserve offers bike rides through history along antebellum rice dikes that harken back to Sea Pines’ days as a rice plantation. There’s fishing in Lake Mary, a 30-acre marvel and the largest freshwater lake on the island. There’s also bird watching and picnicking. Note: there is a $5 pass fee to enter Sea Pines Plantation.
Sea Pines Shell Ring Not only is the Sea Pines Forest Preserve a wonder itself, it holds our seventh, and final, wonder of Hilton Head, the Sea Pines Shell Ring. As you amble through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve and across the boardwalks you’ll stumble upon the shell rings, sometimes called “Indian Shell Ring.” These rings come from nomadic Indian tribes and are an impressive 4,000 years old. The shallow basin is encompassed by a small wall, southern magnolia trees and timbering live oaks. In the nearly perfect circle numerous amounts of oysters, clams, turtle, fish and other shell bones rest. These elements were simply collected by the inhabitants from salt marshes or hunted with spears. An archeologist from the University of South Carolina unearthed the area about 40 years ago and was able to reveal that the ring was built by Ancient Indians over 300 year period about 4,000 years ago. There were no signs that anyone lived in the ring, it was most likely used as a ceremonial ring or community grounds. The reason why the Shell Ring People vacated this place remains a mystery. Note: there is a $5 pass fee to enter Sea Pines Plantation.

history Hilton Head Island has no connection to the popular hotel chain or the infamous socialite. The name actually comes from an English sea captain named William Hilton, who surveyed the coastal waters between present-day Savannah and Charleston. Mapmakers at the time named the area’s most prominent feature, “Hilton’s Headlands,” in his honor. The island has a very rich history beginning with the Native Americans who first visited our island.

renewal Hilton Head Island has evolved into a premier spa destination. The region features a diverse mix of treatments and wellness services virtually unheard of outside major metropolitan areas. Many perceive a spa as “a place to get fluffed and buffed,” implying that spas are purely meant for superficial grooming benefits. Sure, there are definite beautification benefits, but the reality is that there are a lot of mental and physical benefits that you can reap from a trip to the spa. Here are some of the reasons you should check out one of the splendid spas of Hilton Head:
Stress Management and Relaxation: Every type of treatment or service, including massage and body work, can help you relax and decompress. Further, you don’t need to actually buy a treatment to see the benefits. Just sitting in a jacuzzi, steam shower or sauna, amenities a lot of spas, wellness and fitness centers offer, can help you to relieve stress
Detox: Many types of services promote detoxification, which eliminates toxins and excess fluids that can contribute to loss of energy, constipation, bloating and water retention.
