T

hank you for picking up the winter issue of Bluffton’s Fork & Fun Restaurants, the most comprehensive source of restaurant menus and information in print and online in our area. Winter is a great season here in the South. While we might not remember when it was snowing hard enough to count the snowflakes, we can enjoy some chillier days when we get to wear a sweater and crave some comfort food. The rest of the season can be still full of sunny days and even sleeveless shirts. The culinary scene is alive and well, starting with 2nd Annual Chowder Challenge at Reilley’s Plaza January 10, followed by the Restaurants week January 24-31. Hilton Head is already an established wedding destination thanks in part to the 8th Annual Hilton Head Bridal Show, at the Westin Hotel, February 8. March starts with Seafood Festival week March 1-7, followed by Hilton Head Island Wine and Food Festival March 10–15 and concluding with Wingfest March 20-21. Mark your calendars now for these popular events (more on page 16). The Lowcountry is home to more than 200 great restaurants, ranging from secret hideaways to delightful full-service, high-end hotspots or farm to table restaurants and international cuisine. Use the Table of Contents as your overview and navigation tool. Restaurants are listed alphabetically with their phone number and the type of cuisine they specialize in. You will also find the page location for each restaurant’s advertisement or menu, restaurant description and the map location number. The Table of Contents can also be used as a quick reference guide to see who is open for breakfast, lunch or dinner along with several specialty categories such as outdoor dining, children’s menu, take-out, gluten free, late night and more. We also provide information on local entertainment, happy hours, early bird specials, dog friendly places and few other surprises. Be sure to check out our website (www.forkandfun.com) and like us on Facebook (hhirestaurants). Use new mobile app which puts all the information found here, at your fingertips, available free from your favorite app store. We hope you enjoy Fork & Fun and your visit to the area. We are glad that you are here! Anuska Frey, Publisher anuska@forkandfun.com 843-681-3800

Oyster Roast Season is Here What’s a pirate’s favorite letter? RRRRR. R, might become your favorite letter too, because when there’s an R in the month in South Carolina that means it oyster harvesting time. Oyster harvesting time means oyster roasts cannot be too far behind. For the DIYers out there, the ceremony and process of the oyster roast is just as enjoyable as the oysters themselves. Who’s been potting geraniums on my oyster table? Where is the big piece of sheet metal I brought home? Do we have enough seasoned firewood? These are a few of the questions you might hear form the frantic host of an oyster roast as he or she prepares their annual feast. The earth began with fire and so does any good oyster roast. If you don’t already have a fire pit and can’t build one due to Plantation covenants or limited space not to worry, a good old fashion charcoal grill will work in a pinch. If going with a grill, charcoal briquettes will work but wood coals are preferred. Either way start your fire with the goal of glowing coal before cooking begins. Next you need an oyster table. While there are designer and custom models out there that might cost $1,200, picnic tables, patio tables or even a couple of saw horses and an old door will work pretty good as well. Cover the table in old newspapers, or craft paper. Prepare your oysters by hosing off all of the pluff mud. You will also need a bucket of water, a piece of sheet metal that can comfortably fit over your coals and a piece of burlap the same size. For eating, make sure you have lots of hand-towels and oyster knives. 18

With your embers properly glowing, it is now time to place the sheet metal over the coals in as level a position as possible. Place a manageable number of oysters onto the sheet metal and cover with wet burlap. Average cook time is about ten minutes or when the oysters start to barely pop open. Carefully remove the oysters with a shovel and plop them onto your prepared oyster table. Grab a hand-towel and carefully crack the oysters shell open with an oyster knife. You’ll quickly get the hang of it. Serve with fried okra, jalapeño cheese grits and ice cold beer and/or sweet tea. RRRR…It oyster time, Invite your friends!

Let someone else do the cooking! If you are looking for to enjoy some roasted oysters, but want someone else to do the cooking, you are in luck! During the fall and winter there are many hosted Oyster Roasts that are open to the public. Many are hosted at restaurants and the Bluffton Rotary puts on a popular roast as well. If you aren’t looking for a roasted oyster, be sure to try the oysters at one of the many Bluffton restaurants serving them. You won’t be sorry!

Heart of the Lowcountry

Originally settled in the early 1800’s, Bluffton was a summer refuge for Lowcountry plantation owners. The high bluffs of the May River provided protection from both the heat and the insects while the waterway offered easy access to and from Savannah and Charleston. On July 31, 1844, cries of secession were first given voice and debate here when Beaufort native Robert Barnwell Rhett gave his fiery speech atop a platform under the shade of a sprawling live oak tree. 22

The tree, now known as the “Secession Oak”, located on private property, still remains alive today. With the Civil War raging and the eventual occupation of Hilton Head Island and Beaufort by Union forces, the town was mostly abandoned by residents and used as a base for Confederate pickets observing Union troop movements. The town was pillaged by Union forces on several excursions up the May River, and eventually burned on June 4, 1863. Fifteen houses and 2 churches

Bluffton’s Church of the Cross, Calhoun Street

One of the most beautiful Plantation Homes from Planter’s era is open to visitors. Rose Hill Mansion was built in the gothic style and designed by the same architect that created Bluffton’s Church of the Cross on Calhoun Street. Originally built in the late 1850s, the Rose Hill Mansion is furnished with period furniture and memorabilia from original owner James Brown Kirk. Today, Bluffton is one of the fastest growing area’s of the state. Bluffton has a vibrant art and culinary scene, stemming from Old Town Bluffton. The heart of Bluffton is often the May River, a pristine waterway and a wonderful and picturesque place to kayak, sail, fish, or stand up paddleboard. You might find a sharks tooth in the banks of the May. Access the river via the Alljoy Boat Landing, located at the end of County Road 13. Comprised of one-square mile, Old Town Bluffton is a fun and interesting area to shop and explore. Calhoun Street is the heart of Old Town and has shops, restaurants and galleries to discover. The Bluffton Farmer’s Market is where you can find resh, local produce (organic & traditional), plants, nuts, herbs, flowers, honey, cheese along with specialty items like spices, coffee, smoothies, olive oil and jams. The Bluffton Farmer’s market is every Thursday afternoon along Calhoun Street. Anyday is a good day to visit Bluffton, S.C. Come see why Bluffton’s official slogan is the“Heart of the Lowcountry.”

Heyward House Built in 1840 for John J. Cole and Ester Caroline Corley, the Heyward House is one of only eight antebellum structures remaining in the town of Bluffton. This historic home, located at 70 Boundary Street, serves as Bluffton’s official Welcome Center. They offer docent-guided house tours as well as walking tours of Bluffton’s historic district. A well-preserved example of the Carolina Farmhouse Style that was popular from the Colonial period up to the Civil War and influenced from the West-Indys, the Heyward House served as a loved summer retreat for many years. George Cuthbert Heyward, grandson of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Heyward Jr., was the first Heyward to reside in the home. The home’s original slave cabin and summer kitchen have been preserved. The house is named for the family who owned the structure from the early 1880s until the 1990s. Because of its well-preserved condition, the Heyward House is an official project of the Save America’s Treasures Program, a publicprivate partnership between the White House Millennium Council and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Guided tours are available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, please call (843) 757-6293. 23

Carolina Crab Company

Carolina Crab Company, located in the old Captain Woody’s spot in Palmetto Bay Marina, is the latest offering from the Reilley’s Group. Thomas, Brendan and Keith Reilley as well as Shawn Ross have joined forces to bring locals great food at an affordable price. With raised ceilings, distressed wood, and memorabilia from Hilton Head’s earlier years, you may be transported to a more relaxing time in the low country, where a day spent on the water was as important as the cold beer afterwards. Chow Daddy’s, located at 14b Executive Park Road, off of Pope Avenue, is new to the island. After six months of recipe taste testing and thirty menu revisions they settled on their final menu. All that was left was a name. Price’s and Sandy’s sister Hope came up with the name Chow Daddy’s and it stuck. Chow Daddy’s offers a wide variety of delicious foods, but focuses on buns, bowls, and tacos. Buns signify the sandwiches and burgers they offer and bowls refers to the cold and hot bowl options. Their cold bowls include super fresh salads and their hot bowls comprise of smoked pork, smoked chicken, fish, or steak over rice, vegetables or potatoes. All of their pork and chicken is smoked in their giant Green Eggs under their custom hood system and their barbeque sauces are made in house daily. Some of the popular highly recommended choices are the kale and quinoa salad, house smoked fried chicken platter, the rib eye steak burger and fish tacos. Also, to satisfy your sweet tooth they offer house made ice cream sandwiches that will have you coming back for more. Chow Daddy’s is excited to offer healthier op-

Ten years ago, when owner Simon Mikhael first came to Hilton Head he delighted in the wide variety of dining options offered here. Unfortunately, he soon realized he was unable to get the cuisine of food he grew up with. Now that has changed. The authentic flavors of Mediterranean and Lebanese food has arrived on Hilton Head at the Mediterranean Harbor Bar and Grill. Featuring the recipe’s of his mother, Marie Saba, Mediterranean Harbour offers favorites such as Falafel, Kibbeh, Kafta, and seafood dishes. Of course you cannot eat a dish without an enticing side such as hummus, babaganouj, or garlic spread. Not content to just share her recipes, Marie will be overseeing the kitchen to make sure that each recipe is made to her satisfaction. For those unfamiliar with Lebanese cuisine, most dishes are grilled or baked and use ingredients like lemon, garlic, parsley, olive oil and spices to heighten the flavors and bring you a delicious and delightful meal. There are many options for vegans and vegetarians as well. Gluten-free items are also available. Located in Shelter Cove Marina by the mermaid statue, Mediterranean Bar and Grill allows you to enjoy the calming harbour views while eating great food. They offer reasonably-priced food with a relaxing atmosphere that is perfect for a quick bite to eat or night out with your family. Enjoy their indoor and outdoor seating with a full

The menu at Lucky Rooster is 25 percent adventurous, 50 percent of what Rollison’s signature seasonal progressive Southern food and 25 percent standards. It all works out to an American bistro with a Southern soul. The staff prints their menus in-house to have as much flexibility with mixing and matching dishes. Rollison lights up when he talks about his slow-cooking approach and about ingredients. He’s equally passionate about the drinks his staff offers. Rollison researched some of the most legendary mixologists like Jerry Thomas to come up with the restaurant’s craft cocktails, like the Moscow Mule – a 1941 John G. Martin recipe of vodka, fresh lime and the house ginger soda.
