A WALK INTO HISTORY
The Historic Heyward House Museum, built in 1841, is home to the Historic Bluffton Foundation and is one of only eight antebellum homes still standing in Bluffton. This post and beam home is a well-preserved example of the Carolina Farmhouse style of architecture brought here from the West Indies. Visitors can explore the house museum and a restored cabin that once housed enslaved Africans, gaining insight into Bluffton’s complex history. In addition to exploring the past, guests can access maps and brochures to navigate the modern town. Friendly staff are available to answer questions and provide guided tours. Golf cart tours of the Bluffton’s National Register Historic District or guided house tours are also available, with group rates upon request.

Heart
OF THE LOWCOUNTRY ™
Get a lay of the land — past, present and future.
“The charm of Bluffton lies not just in its historic architecture overlooking the May River, or in its Spanish moss-laced live oak and palmetto palm trees lining its streets, but what rests just below the surface. It is a town whose very soul has survived wars, famine, reconstruction, periods of commercial successes and declines, and nature’s wrath. Its diverse stories remain to be discovered by the curious traveler seeking a place that appreciates its past while planning for a greater future.”
– GLEN UMBERGER, HISTORIC PRESERVATIONIST
A HISTORY BUFF’S
Dream
Just one square mile, Old Town Bluffton is perfect for exploring on foot.
BY LAURA LEE
The first time Glen Umberger visited downtown Bluffton as a graduate student at SCAD, he knew he’d be back one day. “The view standing there looking out over the May River was just breathtaking,” he recalls. “This is what they’re talking about when they say the Lowcountry — the charm, the scenery, the natural beauty. It’s unlike anywhere I’ve ever been.”
As fate would have it, Umberger returned in 2021 as the town’s historic preservationist. Like an outdoor museum, the Old Town Bluffton Historic District includes dozens of significant buildings that have stood the test of time — from the burning of Bluffton during the Civil War to damaging hurricanes.
“We have a unique collection of Lowcountry vernacular,” Umberger says. “These houses were built from a practical standpoint with local materials and local design.”
As Bluffton continues to grow, Umberger is helping ensure its historic integrity is maintained.
“It’s nice to see so many restoration projects completed, which will ensure these structures will be here for the next 200 years,” he says.
Welcome to Bluffton
BLUFFTON WELCOME CENTER SQUIRE POPE CARRIAGE HOUSE 111 Calhoun Street, (c. 1850)
Located on a parcel once owned by Squire William Pope Jr., the current structure was built as three outbuildings. When the family returned to Bluffton following the Civil War, these outbuildings were cobbled together to form the present structure. After an extensive rehabilitation, the Squire Pope Carriage House now serves as the town’s official welcome center.

Constructed in a vernacular Greek Revival style, the former Bluffton Methodist Church was sold to nine formerly enslaved congregants in 1874, when it became the Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church. It was listed in the National Registry of Historic Places in 1975 and added to the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network in 2023.
CHURCH OF THE CROSS (1857)

COME WHAT
The May River remains the Heart of the Lowcountry.
BY LAURA LEE
Locals have relied on the May River for millennia, from Muskogean and Yamasee tribes to modern society today.
“Technically the May River is an estuary, not a river,” says Glen Umberger, Bluffton’s historic preservationist, since the 15-mile inlet is fed from the ocean’s tidal shifts rather than a freshwater source. But however you define it, the May River is an oasis for those who call it home.
A SUMMER RESORT VILLAGE
The town of Bluffton dates back to 1820s, when families discovered that high on the bluff, the breeze off the river provided relief from sweltering heat and pesky mosquitoes. “We were a summer village with a couple hundred residents, known simply as May River, South Carolina,” says Umberger.
Two prominent families, the Kirks and the Popes, ran nearby cotton and rice plantations and built multiple homes in town, where they arrived by boat each summer. Both claimed naming rights to the town, proposing Kirk’s Bluff or Pope’s Bluff, until a state
senator settled the argument with the name Bluffton in 1842.
THE CIVIL WAR
Bluffton soon gained a reputation for its separatist movement, propelling South Carolina to be the first to leave the Union in 1860. When the war erupted in 1861, Bluffton became a strategic Confederate outpost.
“For these reasons, on June 4, 1863, Union troops made their way up the May River and set fire to twothirds of the town, in a day known as the Burning of Bluffton,” Umberger explains.
THE RIVER’S BOUNTY
During Reconstruction, the banks of the May River provided a fresh start, especially for those who were formerly enslaved. The Gullah people bought their own properties and started businesses.
“The river was a life source providing an abundance of fish, shrimp, conch and oysters that could be sustenance or bartered for profit,” says Giovanni Glover, Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center executive director. “The
river was also where they reaffirmed their faith through baptisms and worship services and linked Bluffton to other Gullah communities along the coast, maintaining important connections and preserving their way of life.”
For the next several decades, trade on the river fueled the county’s economy, but when U.S. Highway 17 was built in the 1920s, the river became less viable for commerce. While fewer than 100 people work as commercial fishermen today in Beaufort County, Bluffton Oyster Company, the state’s last hand-shucking oyster factory, has been in operation since 1899.
Today, Bluffton is perhaps known best as a destination for arts, culture and history just steps from the river. Providing recreational opportunities and fresh seafood, along with peace and tranquility, the May River remains the heart of Bluffton.
Bluffton’s former mayor, Emmett McCracken, is approaching his 90th birthday. He says the river charms him as much today as when he was a boy.
“The May River has always been the main attraction. It’s where you learn to swim, catch your first fish or just admire its natural beauty.”
BY BOAT, BOARD OR BIKE
Outside Palmetto Bluff specializes in kayak, paddleboard and bike rentals. Naturalist guides not only lead the activities, but they also explain the Lowcountry habitat as you navigate through creeks and waterways. On full-moon nights, book a paddle trip after dark to cruise in the moonlight. Try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding with an introductory lesson, or go kayak fishing for largemouth bass, which has become one of the fastest growing sports. outsidepb.com
Gullah VOICES OF
Nate Pringle always wanted to showcase Bluffton’s history and share his Gullah heritage. So when he retired, he launched his own tour business, Hidden Treasures of Bluffton, and recruited his brother to help.
“Telling these stories is important to my brother, so I sold my business and jumped on board,” says Ray Pringle, Nate’s fellow tour guide.
Visitors can hop on an eightpassenger golf cart and ride through town with Nate or Ray to learn about the area’s diverse history. The brothers cover about 35 stops on four different tours, lasting around 75 minutes.
Each site comes with a story. There’s the historic Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church, built in 1853 that survived the burning of Bluffton during the Civil War. There’s Squat ’N’ Gobble, the town’s oldest, continuously operating restaurant. There’s Bluffton Oyster Company on May River, built on shells from centuries of shucking operations.
“My granddad and his friends were oystermen and used to row out to the beds,” says Ray. “People don’t realize the oysters shells are valuable and you have to replant them for the oysters to grow back — just like a tomato but they take longer.”
Another popular stop is Bluffton Town Hall in the Theodore Washington building, which once served only white students.
Local brothers take visitors on an insider’s tour of Bluffton. BY LAURA LEE
“Integration wasn’t that long ago,” says Ray. “People come on our tour and remember what life was like as a kid in 1964.”
At each stop, photos, documents and official records are shown, giving visitors important visuals into the past. “We’re not just talking, talking, talking. People don’t have to imagine but can see it for themself.”
Ray credits his brother with the
tour’s success. For years, Nate has gathered documents, scoured military records and taken trips to the courthouse. Even neighborhood friends contributed photos and documents when they found out about his mission.
“We’re telling stories that our grandparents told us and their parents told them,” he says. hiddentreasuresbluffton.com

Driving along May River Road, you’ll likely notice the blue bottle trees first. That’s because according to local lore, they capture evil spirits, and Bridgette Frazier wants only the best mojo for her new Gullah restaurant, Ma Daisy’s Porch, set to open this summer.
“Food is the way we speak to people,” Frazier says. “Our culture is a living thing. In the Lowcountry, food
is the way we connect to our West African ancestors and preserve their vibrant culture here.”
Named for Frazier’s grandmother, Ma Daisy, the restaurant will feature authentic dishes that have been passed down orally for centuries from family member to family member. Creative and resourceful, the Gullah people lived off the land, using ingredients readily

available to them such as rice, tomatoes, okra and shrimp. Frazier’s renditions will include specialties like stewed okra and tomatoes, fried okra, red rice and Lowcountry gumbo.
“I’m doing what I was called to do,” she says. “It’s not something that one person owns, but is for the betterment of everybody.”
Sew a sweetgrass basket, can some okra, make a shrimp net and touch a live oyster. These are just a few of the immersive activities visitors can do at the Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center, opening this summer. Executive Director Giovanni Glover has rich ties to the Gullah culture. A well-known shrimper, her grandfather was featured on Nickelodeon’s “Gullah Gullah Island.” Glover will bring in local fishermen, artists, quilters, dancers, storytellers and more.
“We want people of all ages to taste, smell, see, feel and hear the culture so they know what it’s like to be Gullah,” says Glover. blufftongullah.org

ON THE Greens
Lowcountry golfers in the know are quick to tell you that May River Golf Course — Jack Nicklaus’ challenging layout set in scenic Montage Palmetto Bluff — rivals any course in an area rich with world-class tracks.
May River Golf Course might require the most skill of any layout in Bluffton, but it isn’t the only one. Hilton Head National Golf Club and Old South Golf Links are among the most enjoyable offerings in the area, and their playability keeps locals and visitors coming back.
Hilton Head National Golf Club opened Gary Player’s original 18-hole track in 1989 and added a nine-hole Bobby Weed design in 1995. After relinquishing a few holes over the years, the course currently has 18 holes, a combination of Player’s original design and Weed’s additions.
Old South Golf Links features incredible coastal scenes along McKay’s Creek and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.
Not only does the peaceful, steady flow of the May River lend picturesque views at every turn, but it also invites adventures. Explore by kayak or paddleboard. Or book an outing with May River Excursions, which offers dolphin, ecology, sunset and historic river excursions with expert guides who give you a ride — and local knowledge.
ON THE Trails
The 3.4-mile New River Linear Trail winds through Bluffton, passing through hardwood forests filled with wildlife. The trail is relatively flat and easily accessible from S.C. Route 46, between the two entrances to the Heritage at New Riverside Development. Keep an eye to the sky for waterfowl.
For the ultimate outdoor workout, visit the Oscar Frazier Park’s crosstraining equipment, free and open to the public. Cap off your workout with a walk or jog down the adjoining trail.
The Buckwalter Place Greenway Trail behind Publix at Buckwalter Place is a quick and easy way to get out in nature. Wetland streams, bottomland hardwood forests, manmade lagoons and a pine forest are all part of the view from this 1.35-mile trail.
ON THE Courts
Get into the swing of things at Bluffton Recreation Center. From its home on Ulmer Road, the center offers one outdoor tennis and two outdoor pickleball courts. Both are first-come, first-serve.
At Montage Palmetto Bluff, the Wilson Lawn & Racquet Club features eight tennis courts, six pickleball courts, a pro shop and pavilion.
GOLF PARADISE
“Life well lived” is how we describe Montage Palmetto Bluff. And for the avid golfer, the Jack Nicklaus Signature experience at the May River Golf Course is paradise. Take in the majesty of century-old live oaks and serene native landscapes. Woven throughout the May River Forest are 18 holes, 7,171 yards, with a 75.6 rating and 141 slope and several holes bordering the riverbanks. You’ll most remember holes 6, 7, 12 and 14. A JOY TO PLAY
“This course was a joy to play” is the common refrain from golfers finishing their round at Hilton Head National Golf Club. This gem has been heralded for more than 30 years as the best consistently conditioned layout in the Lowcountry. Golf Advisor routinely lists it among the Top 15 courses in South Carolina. Hall of Famer Gary Player and course architecture award winner Bobby Weed used their distinctive design philosophies in ways that make every club in your bag important. But, as golfers will tell you, it’s a course that’s challenging yet not punishing.
The course boasts immaculately groomed TifEagle Ultra greens that run fast and true. The opening holes by Weed offer several strategic risk-reward challenges. The Signature 6th, a par 4, has bordered its entire fairway by a treacherously close lagoon on the right with dangerous pot bunkers on the left. The back nine is tighter and rewards players with a good short game. Most memorable for many, however, is the abundance of wildlife and pristine natural views. hiltonheadnational.com

Local
Get out on the May River and enjoy the catch of the day.
Fun, funky and flavorful — the Bluffton dining scene draws from decades of culinary history, natural river resources and rich agricultural roots. Those traditions blend with newcomers who bring their own experiences, heritage and creativity to this small town. The result is a cuisine that’s familiar yet adventurous.
Hand Shucked
Bringing the best of the May River to your table.
The block building at the end of Wharf Street is a Bluffton landmark.
Home to Bluffton Oyster Company, which has been in business since 1899, the building sits on piles of oyster shells and represents a seafood industry that goes back more than a century. Larry Toomer, along with his wife, Tina, is the third generation to run the family business, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Bluffton Oyster Company is the last hand-shucking oyster house in South Carolina.
The Toomers pride themselves on oysters, shrimp, clams, crabs, mussels and fish pulled from local waters. They sell the fresh-caught seafood at their market, where customers purchase provisions for oyster roasts and Lowcountry boils.
Just up the street, Bluffton Family Seafood House, the restaurant extension of the business, serves seafood dishes in a casual space with indoor and outdoor seating. Order a draft beer or glass of wine to pair with bowls of she-crab soup and platters of steamed oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp and blackened fish. Fresh seafood is the star, but friendly service plays a strong supporting act.
To hear what the Toomers love most about life in Bluffton, check out the “Exploring Bluffton” video series at VisitBluffton.org
Follow the Oysters
The Shell Art Trail, an engaging public art display, winds through Old Town showcasing the oyster, a beloved seafood delicacy as well as a vital element of the Lowcountry marine ecosystem. The four-foottall oyster sculptures are painted by local artists and tell a colorful story. Each has a name describing its theme. “Pluff Mud Treasures,” “Greetings from the May River” and
“Protect our Precious,” are among the 21 shells installed in shops, galleries and museums. Pick up a guidebook at a local shop, and then follow the trail, take “shellfies,” and tag #LowcountryOysterTrail and #LoveBlufftonSC in your social media posts. Find an interactive Shell Art Trail Map at lowcountryoystertrail.org/ shell-art-trail-a-public-art-display.

Chef Bernard sources fresh Lowcountry ingredients from local growers.
BY LAURA LEE
Inspired by local ingredients and powerful cultural connections, the nationally-recognized Chef Bernard Bennett opened Okàn in Old Town Bluffton in 2023.
“My goal for the restaurant is to tell the story of our enslaved people and their journey from West Africa to the Caribbean to here in America,” he says.
Meaning heart or soul in Africa’s Yoruba language, Okàn serves a range of authentic dishes from West African Jollof Rice to Jamaican Ital Stew and Sea Islands Peas and Rice.
“Rice is a big part of our history,” he says. “Enslaved people braided rice into their hair and brought it over here, and milled the land and moved the earth to grow rice in the Americas.”
Chef Bernard credits his grandmother with teaching him to cook everything from smothered chicken and hot water corn bread to rice and gravy, pound cake and a plethora of vegetables.
“My grandmother had a giant garden and was always outside working,” he recalls. “Most everything we ate came from her garden.”
Like his grandmother, Chef Bernard’s dishes are based on what’s in season, whether it’s okra and squash in summer or collards, potatoes and cabbage in winter, that he procured from local farms each week. okanbluffton.com

Town THE Paint
BY LAURA LEE
For an artist, Amiri Geuka Farris says there’s no better place to be than Bluffton.
“I’m really enriched in the Lowcountry culture — it’s such a big aspect of my work,” he says. “It’s so inspiring to be able to go out and experience nature and the beauty of the area.”
The prolific artist has completed 10 large-scale public art projects in the last year alone.
“I find it easier to work bigger than
smaller,” he says. “It gives me much more room and freedom to create.”
His work is as meaningful as it is beautiful. He made a name for himself capturing and celebrating the Gullah culture within the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor, often depicting their way of life as shrimpers and fishermen on the May River. While most of his work is vibrant and colorful, in his popular indigo series he painted with monochromatic colors from the
crop associated with the Carolina Lowcountry.
He’s proud that his work has helped raise awareness and perpetuate the Gullah Geechee culture at home in Bluffton as well as in cities across the southeast.
“People today want to learn about and absorb as much of the culture as they can,” he says. “I like doing public art because it’s accessible to everyone. You don’t have to go to a museum or a gallery. If you’re 4 years
Find Farris’ work at Oscar Frazier Park and Montage Palmetto Bluff, or on Hilton Head Island at the Rowing and Sailing Center, the Gullah Museum and Binya.
old or 80 years old, you can walk by and see public art that inspires you.”
Farris has been in Bluffton for over two decades, long enough to see its evolution as an unknown artist community to a bustling town. “When people come to visit, they can’t believe I get this life all the time,” he says. “You can go down to the river, walk to different restaurants and go to different festivals. It has everything you would want in a small town.”
