HILTON HEAD ISLAND’S NATURAL BEAUTY HAS BECKONED GLOBETROTTERS FOR CENTURIES. THANKS TO THE FORESIGHT OF EARLY LAND PLANNERS, THOSE SAME PRISTINE VISTAS AWAIT TODAY’S EXPLORERS.
HISTORICAL TIMELINE OF HILTON HEAD ISLAND
2000 B.C. – 1400 A.D.
Remnants of oyster shells discarded by Native Americans can be found in present-day Sea Pines Forest Preserve and the Green’s Shell Ring Enclosure Heritage Preserve.
1717
Hilton Head Island’s first settler, John "Tuscarora Jack" Barnwell, founded Point Place Plantation.
1766 Starting in the mid 1700s, West Africans were enslaved and brought to Hilton Head Island to tend rice and cotton fields. By 1766, indigo was the primary crop, and there were 25 plantations on the island.
1790
1775
– 1783
The Revolutionary War: Hilton Head Islanders sided with colonists and skirmished with the British Loyalists from nearby Daufuskie Island. Four Revolutionary War soldiers are now buried or memorialized at the Zion Cemetery.
William Elliot grew the first successful crop of sea island cotton at Myrtle Bank Plantation, formerly Point Place Plantation.
1861 On April 12, the Civil War began with Confederates firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. In November, 12,653 Union troops came ashore on Hilton Head Island.
1862 General Ormsby Mitchel set aside land for Mitchelville, America’s first self-governing town of formerly enslaved people.
The Gullah Geechee saying, “we live by the land; we live by the sea” has encapsulated life on Hilton Head Island since Native Americans made their lives on the shores of South Carolina. Relying on natural resources like fresh seafood and rice and okra grown from fertile soils was the only way forward in Mitchelville, the site of America’s first self-governing community of formerly enslaved people. And when Charles Fraser took
steps to develop the island in the 1950s, he too wanted to protect the environment. In Sea Pines, the island’s first planned community, Fraser limited development and insisted that nature take center stage. Long before the farm-to-table movement swept through restaurants around the country, Hilton Head Island natives lived off the land and sea and cherished their environment — a gift to be preserved.
1868 – 1950 When the Army left, so did the jobs for the Mitchelville citizens. Surviving through fishing and farming, Gullah people moved from their quarter-acre Mitchelville lots to other parts of the island.
1889 – 1930 Tracts of land were purchased by private citizens for hunting preserves. In 1912, the Hudson and Toomer families began operating oyster factories.
1950
Lumbermen from Hinesville, Georgia built sawmills and purchased 8,400 acres on the island to harvest the sea pines.
1950 s Sea Pines, Hilton Head Island’s first planned community, was imagined by Charles Fraser. See page 26 for more information.
1956 Byrnes Bridge was the first bridge constructed to connect the island to the mainland. Hilton Head Inn opened on South Forest Beach. The island’s first grocery store opened at Coligny Plaza.
1998 Cross Island Parkway was completed.
2025 Hilton Head Island’s permanent population: 40,000. Hilton Head Island welcomed over 2.98 million visitors in 2023. The vacation destination continues to uphold Charles Fraser’s vision by prioritizing sustainability and environmental protection.
UNEARTHING THE LOWCOUNTRY’S SECRET ISLAND HISTORY Santa Elena
By Jimmy Ryals
Hilton Head Island is many things: a golf paradise, a sailing and boating mecca, the model for the modern coastal resort community.
It is also, in ways that are only just coming to light, where modern America began.
Hilton Head Island history begins with namesake English explorer Captain William Hilton sighting the island in 1663. From the colonial era and the Revolutionary War to the emergence of the modern town in the late 20th century, that history is palpable. Visitors experience it in structures, graveyards, museums and preserves across the island today.
But there’s a secret history that starts a century earlier, with Spanish colonists, French traders, African enslaved people, and indigenous tribes living, laboring and fighting with one another at Santa Elena, the first European colonial capital in North America.
“This was the beginning of the American melting pot, where you have these cultures coming together,” says Rex Garniewicz, president and CEO of the Coastal Discovery Museum. “It was before Plymouth, before Jamestown, before St. Augustine. And most people have never heard about it.”
Sites like the massive, mysterious shell rings at Sea Pines Forest Preserve attest to Native Americans’ place as Hilton Head Island’s original inhabitants. The first signs of Spanish and French incursions date to the 1520s, and the two colonial powers took turns building and manning forts on the sound for the next 40 years.
In 1566, the Spanish established a settlement, Santa Elena, on the modern-day Parris Island and designated it a capital. It was to be the hub of a continent-spanning empire, Garniewicz says, and when the Spanish committed to a colonial capital at Santa Elena, they recreated Spanish society in full by bringing women, children, farmers artisans and peasants.
A richer society left a richer historical record, and it shows us a city that was surprisingly connected with the rest of the world. Artifacts found at the Santa Elena site include pieces of blue and white plates from the late Ming Dynasty in China.
“To think that Hilton Head Island, Parris Island or Port Royal Sound are connected to China 450 years ago is sort of beyond a lot of people’s conception — that they were this sophisticated connection (point) for the whole northern hemisphere,” Garniewicz says.
Santa Elena was before Plymouth, before Jamestown, before St. Augustine. And most people have never heard about it.
– REX GARNIEWICZ, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE COASTAL DISCOVERY MUSEUM
SANTA ELENA EXHIBIT
Santa Elena's history will come to life at the Coastal Discovery Museum in late 2025. Pairing artifacts with recreations of period clothing and customs, it will put the focus on people. “We don't want to have just the names and dates and battles and ships,” Garniewicz says. “We want to really explore the individual people who lived at this site.”
A Story Still Being Written
By Jimmy Ryals
For a shining moment during and after the Civil War, the islands on Port Royal Sound previewed a free and prosperous future for formerly enslaved Africans.
Here, the Gullah — men and women who kept the customs and language of the ancestral West African homes — built and governed Mitchelville, the country’s first community of freed men and women. Each family got a quarter-acre of land and the materials to build a house on it. Ideas like compulsory school attendance and municipal garbage pickup came to much of America decades later, but they were a reality in Mitchelville in the 1860s.
Over the next three decades, Union troops withdrew, the pre-war social order returned and a catastrophic 1893 hurricane decimated the town. Mitchelville faded. The people who built it never did. Their story — and that of the community they built — is still being written, spoken and lived on Hilton Head Island.
“Over time, you've seen the farmlands go away,” says Alex Brown, a fifth-generation Gullah descendant and Hilton Head Island Town Councilman. “But that doesn't mean that the Gullah people have gone away. There's a lot of different ways that this culture and these people are still alive and vibrant.”
Since 1996, Melvin Campbell and his brothers have introduced visitors to Gullah culture — traditions, customs, beliefs, art forms and family life — through their Gullah Heritage Tours. “A lot of it is still utilized on a daily basis, especially through our diet and our
language. For the most part, you ride around and talk to Gullah folks who are still speaking Gullah,” he says. “The average outsider can’t discern what’s being said.”
Mitchelville’s renaissance is one indicator of the Gullah people’s vitality. In June 2024, the first phase of a $22.8 million restoration opened. When it’s complete, the transformed Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park will include reconstructed freed person’s houses and gardens where visitors can hear the community’s story from people whose ancestors lived it, as well as an archaeology lab and an 18,000-square-foot visitor center overlooking Port Royal Sound.
The Mitchelville project is part of a larger effort that goes beyond preserving Gullah history to actively preserve the Gullah people and culture that are very present on Hilton Head Island today. It encompasses museums that retell that history and small, Gullah-owned businesses that bring it to life through food and goods. It’s an effort that activates the town government, which has established a nonprofit for the preservation of Gullah land and history — and the tourism industry that drives growth on the island today.
Campbell appreciates the opportunity his tours give to educate people from all over the world. “People are learning more than they ever knew about the Gullah culture, which is part of American history,” he says. “When we learn that history, we better understand each other.”
For a glimpse of island history A pleasant afternoon ride begins at Shelter Cove Community Park. Enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants overlooking Broad Creek, then head north on the pathway for about two miles. Stop at the historic Zion Chapel of Ease and the Baynard Mausoleum, at the intersection of Mathews Drive (Mile Marker 6.0) and William Hilton Parkway. The eternal resting place of four Revolutionary War patriots, Baynard Mausoleum is the oldest structure on the island. Cross the William Hilton Parkway crosswalk at the traffic signal and then continue north on the William Hilton Parkway pathway. At Dillon Road, turn right, ride a couple of miles, then turn right on the Beach City Road pathway to the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park on Port Royal Sound. Situated among the mossy live oaks and palmettos, learn the history of the first selfgoverning town of formerly enslaved people in America, dating back to the Civil War.

On Sacred Ground
HISTORIC MITCHELVILLE FREEDOM
PARK OFFERS HOPE AND INSPIRATION FOR ITS VISITORS.
By Robin Sutton Anders
Even before the site of America’s first self-governing community of formerly enslaved people was established as Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, Cora Miller knew the land was sacred. “I found a tranquil place near the water, and I would go there and relax,” she remembers. “I would get so emotional without knowing why.”
At the time, Miller was a storyteller who shared the experiences of Harriet Tubman. “Only later did I learn that Harriet Tubman was right here in Mitchelville, walking on the same ground we’re walking on.” Miller learned Tubman was a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. Serving as a nurse and mending clothes for Confederate soldiers, Tubman discovered where their ammunition and food supply was. “They couldn’t figure out who in the dickens was telling on them,” says Miller.
Today, where Beach City Road gives way to wooded walking trails and peaceful wetlands, Miller embodies Tubman and gives tours to the park’s visitors. “It’s like her spirit just takes over me,” she says. “My grandmother used to say, you better know where you’ve been to know where you’re going. I love helping people understand this history.”
These folks were calling their own shots. They were charting their own course. “
– AHMAD WARD, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR,
In 1861, after defeating Confederate Forces at Port Royal, Union Army General Ormsby Mitchel gave 600 acres of property to the freed slaves of nearby plantations. By the time President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, Mitchelville residents were already buying land and holding elections. When the war ended two years later, 3,500 people lived in Mitchelville.

Preserving and Protecting an Island Paradise
ISLAND LEADERS MAKE SUSTAINABILITY A PRIORITY.
By Jimmy Ryals
The air is clean and sweet, the country very pleasant and delightful,” wrote Captain William Hilton, the first Englishman to step foot on the island that he later named Hilton Head Island, in his ship’s diary in 1663.
Since its founding almost 300 years later by the forwardthinking developer Charles Fraser, sustainability has always been a priority. But the town went a step further in 2024, hiring its firstever chief environmental officer to ensure these values continue to be at the forefront for the destination.
TJ Jett, a Hilton Head Island native, takes the helm at a pivotal moment. He’s guiding the creation of a resiliency plan that will help the town thrive in a new era. “Advancing sustainability on this island is a great opportunity,” says Jett, a naturalist who’s previously worked in South Florida, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos and at Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort. “We started from a very strong foundation.”
In the early 60s, Fraser envisioned more than the typical beach destination for Hilton Head Island. As he thought about how to develop Sea Pines, the first master planned resort community built in the United States, he took an unconventional approach. Covenants and deed restrictions protected the environment. Instead of homes and structures on the beach, they were built away from the oceanfront, designed to blend in with the pine forest and create harmony with nature. Trees — not highway engineers — dictate the natural curvature of the road.
Residents and visitors reap the fruit of those decisions today, Jett says. While other coastal towns scramble to replace forests lost to development long ago, for instance, a canopy of live oaks and island palms still covers 45 percent of Hilton Head Island.
Part of that foundation is the Hilton Head Island Promise, a
compact grounded in Fraser’s aims that gives visitors guidance on how to preserve this unique place:
• LEAVE NO TRACE ON BEACHES. Remove chairs and other equipment, and put trash and recycling in the convenient bins that line the beach.
• HELP THE HATCHLINGS. Fill in any holes you dig and flatten sand castles so sea turtle hatchlings have a smoother path to the ocean.
• LOVE SEA LIFE — FROM A DISTANCE. Admire sand dollars, starfish and other beach creatures, but don’t disturb or remove them.
• SAVE THE SHORELINE. Avoid walking or climbing on dunes, so the sand and the sea oats can keep holding off erosion.
Jett adds a fifth way visitors can help. If your rental doesn’t have a recycling bin, ask the owner for access to the Beaufort County Convenience Center. Each Hilton Head Island property owner has an access code for it, and renters can use the code to drop off their own recyclables before heading home.
The Visitor & Convention Bureau recognizes that everyone plays a role in the island’s sustainability and conservation efforts. To that end, visitors and residents are invited to make the Hilton Head Island Promise, committing to protect and preserve the island’s delicate ecosystem, leaving nothing behind but their footprints.
Whether you’re visting the Lowcountry or you are here to stay, learn more about our sustainability efforts and ways you can volunteer at HiltonHeadIsland.org/ sustainability-hilton-head-island.
Advancing sustainability on this island is a great opportunity.
– TJ JETT, CHIEF ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER, HILTON

WILDLIFE OF HILTON HEAD ISLAND
BALD EAGLE Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Everything about the bald eagle is large — their wingspan, their talons, their hooked beaks. Their massive nests weigh at least a ton and measure 6 feet in width. Find eagles flying above open fields or by the water on Hilton Head Island.
PAINTED BUNTING Passerina ciris
These brightly plumed warm-weather visitors are among the 200-plus birds who make their permanent or temporary homes here. In their winter homes in the tropics, they’re called siete colores, or seven colors. On morning walks, look for them flitting among the brush at Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge.
Meet Your Neighbors
GREAT EGRET Ardea alba
Once hunted almost to extinction for their showy mating plumes, great egrets wait like stark-white statues among marsh grasses for small fish and animals. Today they wade in spots along Broad Creek and within Sea Pines Forest Preserve.
BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN Tursiops truncatus
MARINE LIFE
A small population of these intelligent mammals — 150 or so — live in the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island year-round, but at least as many join them in the spring, using echolocation to navigate their way north. Beachgoers regularly spot dolphins swimming beyond the breakers. Boaters and kayakers often see them in Broad, Mackay and Jarvis Creeks.
sapidus
BLUE CRAB Callinectes
One of the few types of crabs that can swim, blue crabs’ back legs function as paddles. To see their blue-tinged claws up close, bait a string or crab pot with chicken and drop it from a dock or pier like the Old House Creek Dock.
One of four endangered sea turtles that nest here, these massive reptiles weigh upwards of 400 pounds. Females return to lay clutches of approximately 120 eggs starting in early May through mid-August. The eggs hatch under the sand after about 60 days. Unpredictable nesting habits make it difficult to view loggerheads, but hatchlings who have made their moonlit treks from their nest to the surf leave trails in the sand. ON A MISSION TO PROTECT HILTON HEAD ISLAND’S ANCIENT AND BELOVED SEA TURTLE
By Robin Sutton Anders
Amber Kuehn was “changed forever” the day she first encountered a sea turtle 16 miles offshore from Hilton Head Harbor. Working as a divemaster, Kuehn was diving down to retrieve an anchor when she spotted a large shadow in the depths of the ocean. “It was graceful in its element, it looked like a bird flying in slow motion,” she remembers. As the sea turtle swam straight toward her, she rolled back on her heels. “I laid on the ocean floor while the turtle hovered overhead like a spacecraft,” Kuehn says. “Talk about impressed!”
Each summer, sea turtles return to the island’s sandy shores, lay their eggs and go back to their ocean home. Loggerhead turtles, an endangered species, are the most common turtle to nest on the beaches of Hilton Head Island.
As director of Hilton Head Island’s entirely volunteer 18-member Sea Turtle Patrol, Kuehn is on a mission to protect and conserve sea turtles so these ancient creatures can continue to inspire the next generation.
“It’s important to do things like fill holes in the sand so sea turtle hatchlings don’t get trapped on their way to the ocean,” she says. Volunteers help flatten sand structures and pick up litter nightly so the turtles have a clear path. Sea Turtle Patrol also hosts educational, island-wide “Turtle Talks” during the summer for residents and visitors. Meanwhile, Kuehn’s Sea Turtle Patrol has been trained and is permitted by the state to identify, mark and monitor nests. Through “nest dedications,” the Sea Turtle Patrol offers opportunities to sponsor a nest in exchange for updates on its hatchlings as they grow and set off on their journey to the sea.

JOIN US IN PROTECTING AND PRESERVING HILTON HEAD ISLAND’S ENVIRONMENT AND BEAUTY FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.
Use red-beamed flashlights, sold at hardware stores, for nighttime beach strolls. You can also download a smartphone app, such as jLight, to turn your phone screen into a red flashlight.
Turn off outside lights of beachfront residences from dusk till dawn, and cover interior lights (close drapes or shutters) that can be seen from the beach.
Leave only footprints. Throw away your trash. Obstacles like broken beach chairs and sand buckets can prevent turtles from reaching their destination.
Help keep our beaches clean by picking up any trash you notice while you’re on a walk. Baskets are available at Coligny, Burkes, Folly Field, Fish Haul and Alder Lane beaches.
Make it easier for sea turtles and their hatchlings to navigate the shoreline by flattening your sandcastles and filling in any holes you dug when you’re done with your day at the beach.
Enjoy discovering sea life like sand dollars, starfish and hermit crabs, but please leave these coastal creatures undisturbed in their natural habitat.
Please stay on the path. Walking on our beautiful sand dunes can damage or destroy the sea oats and other flora keeping our dunes from washing away.
Maintain your distance from wildlife, including dolphins, sea turtle nests and hatchlings.

Tracing a Rich Legacy
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO ICONIC STATUS, THE RBC HERITAGE TOURNAMENT ENGAGES THE HILTON HEAD ISLAND COMMUNITY EACH YEAR.
By Robin Sutton Anders
Held annually at Hilton Head Island’s Harbour Town Golf Links, the RBC Heritage is a beloved tradition — and a signature event on the PGA TOUR. The must-see tournament blends top-tier competition with the charm of Hilton Head Island’s natural beauty, creating an unforgettable experience.
“It was an honor to be chosen to become a signature event on the PGA TOUR,” says RBC Heritage tournament director Steve Wilmot. “Our fans and sponsors are guaranteed to see the top players compete, and we couldn’t ask for much more than that.
We couldn’t do this without RBC, Boeing, our sponsors and volunteers and of course our loyal fans. This collective support continues to deliver a large economic and charitable impact across the state of South Carolina.”
The RBC Heritage is known for its scenic backdrop. Harbour Town’s iconic red-and-white-striped lighthouse overlooks the 18th
hole. The course, designed by Pete Dye with consultation from Jack Nicklaus, is challenging due to its narrow fairways, small greens and strategic layout that tests the accuracy of the players.
At its core, however, the event is more than just a tournament.
“RBC Heritage is a celebration of community,” says Wilmot. “It’s a generosity-fueled festival of friends and family, golf fans and players, visitors and neighbors, with a portion of the proceeds going right back into the community.”
Over the years, the tournament has contributed millions to charitable causes in South Carolina, making it a significant event beyond the course. “Every year, we come together to celebrate and our signature event status enables us to make an even bigger impact on the community,” says Wilmot.
For more information on the RBC Heritage event’s charitable contributions, see page 118.

Pearl of the Sea
THE MIGHTY OYSTER’S IMPACT ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND
By Laura Lee
Fried on a po’boy or enjoyed straight from the shell — nothing gives you a taste of the sea like a freshly shucked oyster.
“Hilton Head Island oysters are especially tasty,” says Andrew Carmines, owner of Shell Ring Oyster Company and president of Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks
“We have this perfect scenario of big changes in the tide, salty water and a healthy amount of plankton,” Carmines explains. “I love to eat oysters on the half shell, but our steamed oysters — an ode to the oyster roast — and our chargrilled oysters are really popular as well.”
Oysters are not just here for our culinary delight; they are vital to the local ecosystem.
Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, along with more than a dozen other Hilton Head Island restaurants, has joined forces with Outside Foundation on the Oyster Recycling and Reef Building Initiative. Since the program’s inception in 2018, more than 100 tons of oyster shells have been collected and recycled.
When a male and female oyster
reproduce, the larvae must attach to a hard surface. Recycled shells provide the ideal home for a new generation of oysters, called spat.
“The oyster reefs do a lot more than build the population of oysters for harvesting,” says Mike Overton, Outside Foundation board member and CEO of Outside Brands. “Oyster reefs are effective in protecting our salt marshes.”
According to Overton, South Carolina’s salt marshes are the largest breeding ground in North America. Some 500,000 acres provide a home for a rich variety of fish and bird species.
Hudson’s recycles many of its own shells on site, while tons of other shells in the area are discarded at Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn on a designated spot on their 68-acre property. Once the oyster shells are cleaned and inspected by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, they are ready to go back into the water. Volunteers place the shells in netted bags and go out at low tide to build reefs — visitors are even invited to participate.
Coastal Discovery Museum President and CEO, Rex Garniewicz, says the initiative aligns with their mission. “We really want to connect people with the environment. We want to be a fun place for people to walk our trails, interact with our animals and see oysters growing in our marsh.”
There, you can also see first-hand the benefits of a salt marsh — and learn about how everyday actions can make a difference. “Oyster shell recycling is one small thing we can do to protect this beautiful Lowcountry island that we love,” Garniewicz says.
Carmines praises the Coastal Discovery Museum and the Outside Foundation for being proactive in replenishing oyster beds.
“We want to keep our Port Royal Sound watershed pristine and sustainable,” he says. “When we do that, we’re all able to enjoy the bountiful resources of our island.”

Recycled shells provide a home for the next generation of oysters. Hilton Head Island’s largest reef build to date is along the 18th fairway of the iconic Harbour Town Golf Links.
Hilton Head Island’s Eastern oysters are harvested through fall and winter months.
A NEW LIFE FOR OYSTER SHELLS
One mature oyster filters about 2.5 gallons of water an hour. Not only that, but oyster reefs provide a critical habitat for juvenile fish, shrimp and crabs. They also create “living shorelines,” protecting the coast from erosion. Here’s what we’re doing to replenish this vital species.
They’re put in mesh bags, which stop the shells from breaking down, and then placed in tidal creeks and adjacent to salt marshes. A typical reef consists of 300 to 400 bags.
The shells are sun-bleached for three to six months to rid them of bacteria and contaminants.
Surrounded by saltwater, Eastern oysters are prized for their briny flavor.
More than a dozen Hilton Head Island restaurants collect and save oyster shells.

Transcendence, Corrina Sephora
From a simple rowboat to a soaring bird, this forged, fabricated and recycled steel sculpture along the Shelter Cove Sculpture Trail celebrates nature on Hilton Head Island. “I love its scale; when you come across it, you’re not expecting to see it,” says Natalie Harvey, director of Cultural Affairs for the Town of Hilton Head Island. “Every time, I notice something different.”
Shrimp Trawler Captain Dave, Amiri Farris
When it was proposed in 1969, the industrial petrochemical plant would have ruined Bluffton’s fishing, shrimping and oystering industry. This mural at the Rowing & Sailing Center at Squire Pope Community Park (133 Squire Pope Road) pays homage to a small coalition of islanders, including Charles Fraser, who sailed to Washington, DC to put a stop to it. “In this park, kids learn how to fish and charter kayaks,” Harvey says. “It’s a great place to tell the story.”

This sculpture by the playground in Lowcountry Celebration Park reminds its viewers that the idea of a setting sun is a creation of the mind — it only appears to rise and set because of the Earth’s rotation. Frozen in time, this depiction of the sun encourages us to reflect on our environment.
Family, Jonathan Bowling
This family of horses just off of William Hilton Parkway (662 William Hilton Parkway) was strategically placed in a neighborhood historically owned by Gullah families. “Most would have had a Carolina Marsh Tacky horse, native to South Carolina,” Harvey explains. “The sculptor uses a lot of recycled metal farm equipment that young viewers have fun identifying when they get up close.”

Catch of the Day
A HILTON HEAD ISLANDER TAKES TO THE SEAS FOR A SHRIMPING ADVENTURE.
By Linda Lanier
As a Lowcountry local, I’ve enjoyed fresh shrimp from our waters in a myriad of ways — fried, boiled, steamed, with grits, with gravy; for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
But I had never set foot on a shrimp boat until a sunny Saturday morning when I was welcomed aboard the Tammy Jane at the Harbour Town Marina in The Sea Pines Resort. A small, commercial shrimping vessel, the 45-foot boat was given a second life by Vagabond Cruise and charged with taking visitors out on shrimping expeditions into the waters of Calibogue Sound.
My friend Kathy, an Indiana native, had also never been on a shrimp boat. She was as happy as I was to be out on the water on this beautiful day, and our captain, Spike Ivory, and crew, Ian Deery and Chase Wildfeuer, told us what to expect.
Captain Spike introduced us to the basics of shrimping and explained how important the industry has been to the Hilton Head Island area for over a century. Ian and Chase took us through the process of lowering the tickler chain, which encourages the shrimp on the bottom to enter the net, and the turtle excluder device (TED) that keeps the turtles from being caught up in the nets.
Nets lowered, we trawled slowly through the sound enjoying the sun, the blue sky and the breeze as a few dolphins were sighted swimming alongside the boat. Our companions on this adventure, folks from Ohio and New Jersey with some little ones, laughed excitedly as Ian and Chase raised the nets and hauled our catch onto the deck.
Shrimpers call a successful catch a “money bag” and a catch
that pulls in more sea creatures than shrimp a “dirty bag.” Our catch was somewhere in the middle, and after a quick close-up look of other Calibogue creatures, like a few lovely starfish, we swiftly returned them to their home in the water.
As we returned to the dock under the famous Harbour Town red-and-white-striped lighthouse, Kathy and I, a little windswept and happy that we had a great crew to do the heavy lifting, agreed we would bring our friends and families along next time on this quintessential Hilton Head Island adventure.

LOCAL TENNIS LEGEND STAN SMITH IS PASSIONATE ABOUT PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT.
By Eleanor Spicer Rice
The pro you know as a former world No. 1 player and Wimbledon champion — and for his iconic white and green Adidas shoe — is also legendary for his philanthropic work around the island. That list is just as long as his tennis accomplishments.
Smith served on the board of the Heritage Classic Foundation for 15 years, a decade of which he worked on their Charities committee to advance 85 island nonprofits.
He and his wife, Margie, have also been involved with the Boys and Girls Club for more than 30 years. “We think it’s very important for working parents to be able to drop their kids off at a place where there are athletic activities, but also tutoring that helps children stay up to speed with their school work, so that when they graduate to the next class, they’re on the same level as their peers,” he says.
Smith appreciates Hilton Head Island’s commitment to recreation facilities of all kinds.
“The city council has done a good job of buying land and preserving it for parks. We have tennis and pickleball. It’s important to listen to the needs and desires of people who live on the island. My philosophy is, you want people to get out and move around — it doesn’t really matter what they play.”
Still, tennis is without a doubt Smith’s favorite sport — “it’s been my life,” he adds. And thanks to Smith, who’s been associated with the island since the 70s, when developer Charles Fraser hired him as the touring pro for The Sea Pines Resort, it’s part of Hilton Head Island’s DNA. Today, the area is home to more than 300 courts, plus tennis academies and clinics for all ages and skill levels, taught by some of the best instructors in the game.
List of local tennis courts or clinics on p. 170.
STAN SMITH: SOME PEOPLE THINK I’M A SHOE
Local legend Stan Smith has two claims to fame: his iconic sneaker and his status as former world champion. Get the full story in this coffee-table book, available at the Sea Pines Racquet Club.
Pickleball, Anyone?
LEARN TO PLAY THE COUNTRY’S FASTEST-GROWING SPORT.
This lively game — with an equally fun name — combines tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It’s a fastpaced game, with an underhand serve, played on a smaller court.
Did you pick up a pickleball paddle while visiting the island? Show us your photos by tagging #LowcountryLife.
HOW DID IT START?
Pickleball was invented more than 50 years ago by three dads hoping to entertain their kids on summer vacation in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Its name is a reference to the nonstarters — those leftover rowers who would race for fun in local “pickle boat” crew competitions. Before long, the sport caught on in all 50 states.
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
Pickleball uses paddles that are lightweight and easy to swing. The ball is also different from a tennis ball. It’s plastic, perforated and about the size of a softball. A pickleball moves about one-third the speed of a tennis ball.
HOW DO YOU PLAY?
Pickleball serves travel diagonally cross-court. Like tennis, the ball must bounce once after the serve before it can be returned. When you score a point, you continue to serve. Games go to 11 points and must be won by two points.
Tennis and Pickleball Center
The award-winning Palmetto Dunes Tennis and Pickleball Center offers 17 clay tennis courts and 24 pickleball courts, and invites players of all skill levels for recreational and competitive play. Finding Balance
HILTON HEAD ISLAND IS A SANCTUARY FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT.
By Laura Lee
Charlotte Hardwick has organized wellness retreats all over the world, but there’s always been something special about her hometown of Hilton Head Island. That’s why she returned in 2021 with her husband to run Flow and Nourish, a business that helps people achieve their best when it comes to nutrition and wellness.
“After living in big cities like New York and San Francisco, we felt so lucky to have the ocean and all the beautiful nature here,” Hardwick says. “I love hearing the sound of the waves and breathing in the salt air.”
Hardwick has always believed in a holistic approach to wellness. The yoga classes she leads from her Hilton Head
Island home focus on connecting breath to movement, rather than cursorily moving from one pose into the next. “We’re working from the inside out rather than the outside in,” she says. “Even in a group class, I make it very individual with a goal of meeting people where they are. People find length and space and ease, and they walk out of class feeling very good.”
Through Flow and Nourish, Hardwick also offers customized cooking classes. These, too, change with the seasons. “In yoga and in the kitchen, spring asks us to clear and cleanse the body. With all these things blooming all around us, our bodies are working a thousand times harder, and the food that surrounds us in the spring is there to support all that.”
Like Hardwick, many of her clients flocked to Hilton Head Island for a lifestyle centered on rest and renewal.
Even in a group class, I make it very individual with a goal of meeting people where they are. “
– CHARLOTTE HARDWICK, FLOW AND NOURISH ”
“Some of my clients are going through a major life transition, and others just need to shut off the thoughts in their head, let go of guilt and feel better about themselves,” she says.

A Heritage of Philanthropy
SINCE 1969, HILTON HEAD ISLAND’S BUSINESS AND INDIVIDUALS HAVE BENEFITTED FROM THE RBC HERITAGE TOURNAMENT.
By Jimmy Ryals
As one of eight signature events on the PGA TOUR, Hilton Head Island’s legendary RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, hosted by the Heritage Classic Foundation, draws more than 100,000 spectators from around the globe. From the Pete Dye- and Jack Nicklaus-designed Harbour Town Golf Links, players and spectators experience the crown jewel of Hilton Head Island golf.
On the course, carved out of the sandy soil, through the palmettos, pines and oaks, the 2024 RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing at Harbour Town Golf Links was a pitched competition among the PGA TOUR’s best, with only one winner: Scottie Scheffler.
Scottie Scheffler, 2024 winner
Behind the scenes, though, the April tradition is a team effort to aid the charities that serve Hilton Head Island. And with each birdie scored or sandwich sold, 90 Lowcountry organizations benefit from the year-round efforts of the Heritage Classic Foundation.
While the tournament itself began in 1969, the Foundation’s philanthropic efforts date back to 1987. In that time, it’s raised more than $55.3 million for local charities. That impact spans every facet of life on the island, from arts and culture to education and sustainability to health and welfare.
“We try to support as many charities as we can,” says RBC Heritage Tournament Director Steve Wilmot. “We spread the wealth around as much as we can because there are so many worthy organizations deserving of any and every penny that they might get.”
And the Foundation supports those charities in as many different ways as it can. There’s Birdies for Charity, a PGA TOUR program that allows donors to pledge small amounts for every birdie or eagle scored on the course. In 2024, that generated 1,139 donations, and the Foundation matched 20% of proceeds.
There’s the Tartan Club, a collection of donors who directly support college scholarships for more than 60 students each year.
“ ”
In 2024, Birdies for Charity distributed $325,000 to local nonprofits, pushing the total to
$7.23 million since 2000.
And there’s the tournament volunteer operation itself. Around 1,600 volunteers supplement the 11-person tournament staff during the week-long event. They sell food and drinks at concession stands, park cars for tournament attendees, and pick up trash on the course itself. That effort frees the tournament to give more money to the organizations it supports.
The tournament itself also has a broader, $134.9 million economic impact on the region. “We anticipate a significant increase in this assessment,” Wilmot says, noting that the 2024 event beat its ticket sales goal by 41 percent. “Signature status is taking us to a whole other level.”

At Palmetto Hall, find considerable challenge and natural beauty on the Arthur Hills Course and Robert Cupp Course. A Joy to Play
“This course was a joy to play” is the common refrain from golfers finishing their round at Hilton Head National Golf Club
Located a mile west of the island bridges, this gem has been heralded for more than 30 years as the best consistently conditioned layout in the Lowcountry. Golf Advisor routinely lists it among the Top 15 courses in South Carolina.
Hall of Famer Gary Player and course architecture award winner Bobby Weed used their distinctive design philosophies in ways that make every club in your bag important. But, as golfers will tell you, it’s a course that’s challenging yet not punishing.
The course boasts immaculately groomed TifEagle Ultra greens that run fast and true. The opening holes by Weed offer several strategic risk-reward challenges. The Signature 6th, a par 4, has bordered its entire fairway by a treacherously close lagoon on the right with dangerous pot bunkers on the left. The back nine is tighter and rewards players with a good short game. Most memorable for many, however, is the abundance of wildlife and pristine natural views. hiltonheadnational.com 843.842.5900 F hiltonheadnational

A TINY SHOP TELLS A BIG STORY
About five miles west of the ocean, tucked under the trees on Spanish Wells Road, Binya is a dream-come-true for the shop’s owner, Lola Campbell.
A sixth-generation Gullah, native islander and corporate attorney, Campbell returned home to Hilton Head Island during the pandemic with a mission. “I’d always wanted to do something to promote and preserve our family’s Gullah heritage,” she says.
From gourmet seasonings and candles to colorful art and sweetgrass baskets, every item in Binya — the name signifying “been there” in the Gullah language — tells a story. Shoppers find Lola’s own “Gone Gullah” product line, including apparel, home décor and accessories.
Campbell and her family members are on hand to recommend a book or a specialty product from local vendors, like Four Seasons Apothecary, 7th and Palm, Little Fish Boateak, Gourmet Warehouse or Cottonwood Soap.
Campbell opened the shop near her parents’ popular farm stand and across the street from her grandparents’ home. “The location is so important. Customers start talking to me, my mom or my sister, and they see the land where our family’s been for generations. It gives them a connection to the Gullah culture.”

BLUFFTON BECKONS VISITORS WITH ITS GRACIOUS HOSPITALITY AND CHARM.
By Laura Lee
The charm of Bluffton lies not just in what is seen in its historic architecture overlooking the May River and Spanish mosslaced live oak and palmetto palm trees. Glen Umberger, historic preservationist, believes its true charm rests just below the surface. “Founded as a summer resort in 1825, Bluffton’s very soul has survived wars, famine, reconstruction, periods of commercial successes and declines, and nature’s wrath.”
Bluffton has been a popular destination since the early 1800s, when rice and cotton planters found respite from the heat on the breezy bluffs of the May River. Most of the town was burned down by the Union Army in 1863 during the Civil War, but two churches and 15 houses survived the fire (eight of which remain standing).
Today, visitors find a mix of antebellum homes alongside trendy shops, upscale eateries and luxury accommodations. Says Umberger, “Bluffton’s diverse stories remain today to be discovered by the curious traveler seeking a place that appreciates its past while planning for a greater future.”

BLUFFTON HISTORIC
THE SQUIRE POPE CARRIAGE HOUSE CONNECTS BLUFFTON’S HISTORY WITH ITS FUTURE.
The Pope family left Bluffton during the Civil War and never returned. Though their main house was destroyed during the Burning of Bluffton, the original 1850s carriage house remained. Its perch overlooking the May River and adjacent to the greenspace of Wright Family Park adds to its prominence in Historic Old Town Bluffton.
True to its mission to identify and sustain centuries-old structures, the Town of Bluffton acquired the carriage house in 2017. A team of artisans, engineers and builders has worked to lift the home from a state of disrepair and are working to restore it to its original 1850s splendor, using original materials where possible. Starting in January 2025, the Squire Pope Carriage House will serve as Bluffton’s Official Welcome Center.
Bluffton’s diverse stories remain today to be discovered by the curious traveler seeking a place that appreciates its past while planning for a greater future.

By Linda Lanier
Acommunity of entrepreneurs call the island home — and they're not the only ones. Read on for great reasons to make island life your everyday reality.
THE ISLAND LOOKS — AND FEELS — LIKE PARADISE.
Deep in the South Carolina Lowcountry, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the rivers and sounds of the Intracoastal Waterway, Hilton Head Island is 45 miles from Savannah — and a world away from Old Man Winter. Leave your coats behind; the average yearly daytime temperature is 70 degrees. Just about 20 minutes from I-95, we’re served by the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) and the Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH).
CHOOSE FROM TOP-RATED SCHOOLS. For pre-K through high school, island residents can choose from five public schools and four private schools. At the college level, students attend the
University of South Carolina via Beaufort, Hilton Head Island and Bluffton campuses, and Technical College of the Lowcountry. Learning doesn’t stop at the university level. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head keep islanders up to date on everything from current events to cooking.
STATE-OF-THE-ART HEALTH CARE IS WITHIN REACH.
Rest assured that the Hilton Head Medical Center and physicians, dentists and health care providers of all specialties are available to attend to all health needs.
YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT.
If you want to get involved with a church or nonprofit that makes a difference in your community, you have ample choices. Houses of worship of many religious beliefs are a vital part of life on the island, and philanthropic and civic groups are engaged in community events throughout the year.
RETIREMENT IS READY MADE. When the time comes, you’re in good company. Since 1960, fortunate islanders have retired to this sunny spot on the ocean for time to reconnect, relax and slow down time. Visit hiltonheadisland.org/ real-estate.
HOME COURSE ADVANTAGE.
Hilton Head Island offers a rich assortment of golf-oriented gated communities, many of which feature private clubs. Long Cove Club, Wexford, Port Royal and Sea Pines Country Club are on the island, while Colleton River, Berkeley Hall and Belfair are among the top golf gated communities in the Bluffton area.
RESIDENTS FIND PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED.
Hilton Head Island celebrates its rich history and natural resources through year-round arts and culture events and ecotourism. Recreation and wellness are a natural part of everyday life.
Beautiful Beaufort Living
Discover one of Beaufort County’s hidden gems, Dataw Island. This gated community is located just outside of Historic Beaufort and is only 15 minutes to the region’s most pristine beach, Hunting Island State Park.
Dataw Island residents embrace an active Lowcountry lifestyle. This way of life is enhanced by two 18-hole golf courses by Tom Fazio and Arthur Hills, Har-Tru tennis courts (designated by the USTA as an “Outstanding Tennis Facility”), championship croquet lawns, brandnew pickleball courts and indoor and outdoor pools, as well as kayak launches, bocce courts, art studio, a free library and a full-service marina.
The island’s natural beauty is immaculately conserved in this master-planned community, where residents enjoy breathtaking views from around every corner. Home options range from one-story living to deepwater access and a private dock. Open daily; stop by to see Dataw Island for yourself. dataw.com • 843.838.3838
