Hello Members, The HIMAA Board has in the last week finalised our audited financial reports for the financial year 2019/20. The results are grim and without federal government assistance through JobKeeper payments, HIMAA’s financial situation would be perilous. This is not only due to the unpredictable event of the COVID-19 pandemic but in my personal opinion our inability to modernise quickly enough and to diversify our revenue streams. I have stated previously in this column that without adequate revenues, HIMAA cannot employ the staff and have the established infrastructure that supports our branches, committees, membership services, a world class health information management journal, National Conference, webinars and etc. Hence, the Board with the assistance of Finance, Audit and Risk Management (FARM) Committee is closely monitoring our financial situation. I am proud to have chaired a unified HIMAA Board this year where we have had to make some really difficult decisions. These decisions are based on HIMAA surviving to support our members and providing a voice for HIM professionals in the medium and long term. I would like to thank each and everyone of my fellow Board members for their efforts in collectively guiding HIMAA through these challenging times.
Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on the 6th of November, 2020 will allow the Board to provide further details to the membership on our current situation and the steps we will undertake to ensure HIMAA’s sustainability. I hope you as a member will join us online this year for the AGM.
National Conference The annual HIMAA National Conference is an event I look forward to each year. I learn from the content that is presented during the scheduled sessions and enjoy the opportunity to catch-up with friends in the profession. This year’s conference will be conducted virtually. The Conference Committee have put together a strong program and some interesting activities for us to network and socialise in whilst we’re practising social distancing. I’m delighted that we have two keynote speakers headlining our conference in Prof Michael Kidd AM who is Deputy Chief Medical Officer and has been a significant voice during the COVID-19 pandemic for Australia. In Stephen Duckett of the Grattan Institute we have another prominent and at times alternative voice on COVID management. Stephen is particularly familiar to Victorian HIMs given that he was the one the architects of case mix funding in the 90s for Victoria and previous dean of La Trobe’s faculty of health science. NATIONAL OFFICE October is the month of our annual conference. The HIMAA Conference Committee is this year delivering our first ever virtual conference. Efforts of the committee have been significant due to COVID-19 challenges; including an initial uncertainty on the opportunity to even host a conference (meaning we had a much later than usual start to planning) and challenges engaging healthcare professional speakers- who are all facing unprecedented time and availability challenges. This year’s conference will be run in a brand new format and whilst there’s no doubt you will gain significant professional value from the speakers and sessions, the dinner will be an event in its own right. We apologise for the later than usual program finalisation but watch this space indeed!
Managing Health Information Privacy During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Considerations and Perspectives from Around the Globe Our very own Sharon Campbell (BSc.HIM, MHlthAdmin) has collaborated with a number of international HIMP from America, India and Canada to co-author a paper regarding the rapid introduction of new technology to support the extraordinary contact-tracing and populationwide surveillance measures envisaged in fighting COVID-19. Sharon notes “few countries have frameworks in place. Of note, health data privacy practices regarding COVID-19 data are constantly changing as data sharing challenges arise. There are more questions that arose during our review and this will require further study in the future. Although we all had different experiences and perspectives there were a lot of similarities when reviewed”. IFHIMA News A/Professor Kerryn Butler-Henderson has stepped down as Australia’s National IFHIMA Director. HIMAA thanks Kerryn for her time in this role. Vicki Bennett has now

taken on the role. From beginnings in 1955, IFHIMA has supported Health Information Management professionals across the globe and has continued to drive the vision of ‘a healthy world enabled by quality health information’. Ensuring the work continues for this vision into the future, a new strategic plan was launched for 2020 – 2025. At the core are four Strategic Pillars: Member Engagement and Growth, Education, Training and Research, Developing Nations, and Strategic partnerships. An operation plan to increase revenues, a strong marketing and communication strategy, sound infrastructure, and technical and administrative support also constitute the foundations of the strategic plan. Everything you ever wanted to know about an Impact Factor but were afraid to ask. The Editorial Board spends considerable time on efforts to improve thte impact factor (IF) for the Health Information Management Journal (HIMJ). The current HIMJ IF, relating to 2019 data, is 1.833, the highest it has ever been. But what does this mean? The IF provides a way to rank and assess journals, representing the frequency with which an average article in a journal has been cited in a given year. It is calculated by dividing the number of citations of articles published in a given year to the total number of articles published in the journal during the previous two years. The IF is used as a proxy measure of the ‘importance’, ‘reach’ or standing of a journal (https:// clarivate.com/essays/impact-factor/). A journal must be indexed in Web of Science to have an impact factor, meaning it meets 28 “quality criteria” which measure it’s scholarly content and publication process. In this paper, Lloyd and colleagues used routinely reported for public consumption to measure health service performance in an Australian rural hospital setting. They investigated: access and equity; efficiency and sustainability; quality, safety, and patient orientation; and employee engagement.
In this letter to the Editor, the authors discuss the importance of international standardised coding of COVID-19 to ensure timely, reliable, accurate data for all the various purposes for which hospital discharge data are used.

GUEST SPEAKER, DEE ROCHE, MBA FELLOW MBA Teaching Fellow Dee Roche is a coordinator and lecturer at the UWA Business School, specialising in leadership, strategic change and transformation. Since 2009, Dee has coordinated the MBA Organisational Change and Transformation unit. She is a passionate change-maker who puts theory into practice by marrying together lived experience and academic understanding of change and transformation. Dee’s UWA journey began in 2003 and over the last 17 years, she has worked in a variety of roles including the UWA Executive Education as a Senior Management Consultant in the areas of leadership, strategic change and transformation. Before commencing her role in academia, Dee started her career as a registered general and paediatric nurse educator. Her experiences of travel and education opportunities in England, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea, Southeast Asia and Australia kickstarted her transition from nurse to UWA. A life-long learner, Dee describes her career as a continuous work in progress, neither finishing one position nor starting another. Her cumulative experiences provide her with a rich source of portability and transferability into the diverse fields of health, education, social impact and facilitation. Her personal philosophy is to provide ‘service at its best’. She is also actively involved in student support and mentorship programs at UWA. MEMBER PROFILE Heather Paulet OCTOBER 2020 What does your current role involve? My current role is Manager of Health Information Services at Castlemaine Health. We have a loyal and dedicated team of 14, mostly part timers. Our longest serving staff member has been with us for 45 years and our average years of service is 19 years! They tell me they stay because of the variety of work in HIS, our team culture and convenience of their commute. Our department looks after the usual medical record functions including FOI, statutory reporting (VINAH, VAED, HACC, CHSP, AIMS, etc.) and system administration for a number of applications. We also provide a coding service to 9 other small regional hospitals. How did you first hear about the HIM/ coding profession and what made you want to take your career in this direction? I stumbled into the profession straight from school. Not knowing what to do, and my sister strongly advising against teaching, she found the Medical Record Administration course in the little book that listed all the university courses in Victoria. At that stage it was a 2 year course so I thought 2 years in Melbourne would be great (I grew up in the Latrobe Valley) and even if I didn’t really like it, I would have a qualification, and (hopefully) a job at the end until I made up my mind! First year at Hytone House, Lincoln Institute, was fun socially, but a little boring in lecture content. Oh well, only another year to go! Second year was much more interesting with the extended professional placements. I was then fortunate to be in the cohort that was offered the option of graduating with a Diploma or continuing for a third year – the first intake of the Degree. Most of us continued to obtain our Degree. How do you explain what HIMs/Coders do, or how do you promote the profession?

We are fortunate to be in a profession that is so varied and provides so many opportunities. While it can sometimes be difficult to explain what we do, I try to promote our profession by pointing out the diversity in roles that HIM’s can gain employment in. How has COVID-19 impacted you and your team? COVID-19 has impacted our service, but luckily not to the extent of the metropolitan hospitals. Our elective surgery throughput has reduced and our community services have largely moved to telehealth. We have used this (relatively) quiet time to catch up on all the maintenance tasks that have been building up – culling records, updating procedures, auditing and rearranging our department. The upside of this crazy time is that our HIM’s finally have VPN access (yes, we are often lacking in the basics that others take for granted!) What’s your personal or professional goal for the rest of the year? My goal for our team this year is to consolidate our succession planning to ensure that essential tasks are not person dependent, continue providing variety to the staff and celebrate our achievements. What do you like to do in your spare time outside of work? On a personal note, living in a rural community is fantastic. Cannot beat the short commute and fresh air. There is always something to do, whether it’s in my garden, enjoying the many bush walking tracks or yoga classes. Unfortunately catching up with distant friends is on hold at the moment, but I am looking forward to the time when I can again see the HIM’s who have remained friends since University and previous workplaces – see you soon.
