paint your heart out! Ever thought of painting your headboard a sky blue on steroids? I hadn’t, but after seeing one in this issue (page 27), I asked myself, Would I? Could I? Am I brave enough to venture that far out on the paint deck? Probably! It’s easier to try a daring color once someone else has gone for it. How about you—would you paint your dining room orange? Your cabinets black? A pillow any color at all? (Oh, yes, that actually happens on page 60!) Maybe you’ve lived with painted pieces all your life and they’re still inspiring you. Growing up, my sister Jennifer and I were obsessed with the candy-apple-red-lacquered nightstands that my grandpa built and painted for our shared bedroom. We kept our most prized possessions in the drawers, and we put stickers only on the back of the nightstands, because we would have been in big trouble (rightly so) if we stuck them on the front. To this day I’m not afraid of any paint color for a nightstand refresh. Buzzy yellows, refreshing greens, riotous pinks—the heart wants what the heart wants. Ready to follow yours?

Disaster-proof colors, prep steps everyone should do: We got HGTV stars to spill their secrets at our cover shoot.

drew scott & jonathan scott property brothers: forever home WHAT’S AN IMPORTANT PAINT TIP PEOPLE TYPICALLY AREN’T AWARE OF? DREW SAYS: Flat paint is more forgiving. The glossier the

finish, the more imperfections you’ll see after the job is done. So if you’re painting an old wall that has been patched or furniture that’s not in great shape, you’re better off going with a flat finish.

THE EASIEST WAY TO CHOOSE A PAINT COLOR FOR A ROOM IS… JONATHAN SAYS: Find inspiration photos in magazines—like this one!—of what you want your room to look like. Take those images to the paint store and get chips that match; people at the store can recommend some. Always try more than one sample. I usually take home three. Property Brothers: Forever Home premieres May 29 at 9 p.m. ET.

tarek el moussa & christina anstead flip or flop IS THERE A PAINTING RULE YOU’VE LEARNED THE HARD WAY? TAREK SAYS: When I was new at this, I tried to skip priming

walls before painting them to save time and money, but the opposite happened. I paid the price with poor coverage and inconsistent color that had to be redone, and labor is pretty expensive. For new drywall, I like using a high-quality paint and primer in one.

WHICH COLOR IS TOUGH TO GET WRONG? CHRISTINA SAYS: On Flip or Flop, we try to appeal to a

range of buyers with our design choices, so we use gray a lot. It’s a magical color—you can paint an entire floor of a house with it, but the tone will look a little different in every room because of the lighting. Of course, a bold teal front door is always fun! cover stars leanne ford & steve ford restored by the fords WHAT’S THE BIGGEST PAINT MISTAKE YOU’LL NEVER, EVER MAKE AGAIN? LEANNE SAYS: Not testing the color on part of a wall before painting the whole room. Luckily it was in my own house. I’d picked a dark blue blackish color, and I painted all four walls and the ceiling without putting a single swatch anywhere. I was just so excited to get going. It pretty much dried purple, so I had to start that job all over again.

SHARE YOUR BEST PAINT TRICK! STEVE SAYS: My best trick is being a human ladder. I’m

6 feet 5 inches and can reach up to probably 9 feet. But seriously, a sprayer is my real secret weapon—it’s fast, and it gives a seamless finish. You just need to protect everything in the room from overspray with plastic. If you’re not game to do that, I like an 18-inch roller for painting a large space quickly. Watch Restored By the Fords in the HGTV app from anywhere.

page turner & deron jenkins flip or flop nashville NAME SOMETHING YOU’VE PAINTED THAT WAS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED. PAGE SAYS: At one flip I was trying to sell, I painted the

floor of the wood deck to look like there was an accent rug on it. My “rug” was solid blue with a thick white border. A buyer was either going to love it or hate it. Thank goodness it turned out cute!

WHAT’S THE MOST HELPFUL OR SMARTEST PAINTING ADVICE YOU GOT FROM ANOTHER PRO? DERON SAYS: The most important part of any paint job

is the prep. Clean the surface, fill any holes, sand the wood, cover the floors, tape off around windows and doors. Putting in extra effort on the front end makes everything go more smoothly—and look smooth too. Catch up on Flip or Flop Nashville in the HGTV app.

t ottomans and rug The couple’s old room was basically design by default. “We stuck the metal bench, which we’d had for ages, at the end of the bed just to have something there,” says Hillary. Considerably more contemporary (and safer for kiddie climbers): a trio of hex-shaped ottomans from Target, with storage to boot. A rug by Feizy has a simple yet energizing design.

he to-do list was loooong when Al and Hillary Caceres moved into their 1960s ranch house in 2017—most of the rooms hadn’t been redone in decades. Slowly but surely the couple checked things off: They ripped out dark wood paneling in the living spaces, redid the kitchen, and updated the electrical throughout. Then they got pregnant with their third, and parenthood took priority. “We chopped our master bedroom in half to create a nursery, which made the space look even drearier,” says Hillary. “Everything was left over from other houses we’d lived in, and nothing really fit together.” HGTV Magazine brought the bedroom into 2019 with glam pieces, hits of color, and perky patterns. “It’s all so much brighter and fresher now,” she says. “We finally have a place just for ourselves that feels like a treat.”

HOW TO PAINT

put a pattern on plain pillows stencil a planter 1. Center the stencil on the planter and attach it with repositionable spray adhesive. Using a foam pouncer, fill in the stencil with crafts paint. 2. Remove the stencil while the paint is still slightly wet. Let dry, then reposition the stencil so it lines up next to the part you already painted. Repeat until the entire planter is covered. 1. Make a stencil: On the matte side of a sheet of freezer paper, draw or trace a design. Use a crafts knife to cut out the stencil, creating negative space where the paint will go. (Or buy a premade stencil.) 2. Iron the pillow cover and lay it flat on a protected surface. Put the stencil on top, shiny side down. Iron it on. 3. Using a foam pouncer, fill in the stencil with crafts paint. Remove the stencil while the paint is still slightly wet. Let dry, then repeat until the design is complete. spray-paint a lamp 1. Remove the shade and finial and set aside. Tape off the harp, bulb socket, and cord with painter’s tape. 2. Spray-paint the base and finial. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet. Let dry. Replace the shade and finial.

gloss up a cabinet 1. Remove the pulls and set aside. Sand the cabinet and wipe clean. Tape off the legs with painter’s tape. Prime, and let dry. 2. Paint the cabinet with high-gloss latex paint. Let dry, then apply a second coat. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet. Let dry, then replace the pulls. dip a basket 1. Fold the top of the basket down into itself. Paint the bottom half with crafts paint. 2. Do a second coat if necessary. Let dry, then pop the top back up. BASKET 11"H x 16"-diameter seagrass basket, $25, worldmarket.com PAINT Pollen by Martha Stewart Crafts

marbleize candles 1. Pour coral and white crafts paints into two separate paper cups. Mix marbling medium into each cup according to the instructions (we used Testors). 2. Tape off the rim and the bottom of an LED candle with painter’s tape. Wearing latex gloves and holding the candle on its side over an aluminum baking tray, pour on the coral paint mixture, turning the candle for full coverage. Add drips of white, moving the candle around to get a marbleized effect. 3. Set the candle on a protected surface; it helps to elevate it slightly so drips won’t puddle around the bottom. (We set ours on a bottlecap.) Let dry. Remove the tape and scrape off any excess paint from the top and the bottom with a crafts knife. Repeat as needed, using a new paper cup for each color. CANDLES Ashland LED pillar wax and plastic candles with timer in vanilla scent, from $7.50 each, michaels.com Coral Blush by Americana Gloss Enamels, Poodle PAINT Skirt and Wedding Cake, both by Martha Stewart Crafts

stripe a trunk 1. Tape off the trim and hardware with painter’s tape. Tape off a wide stripe down the center. Paint it light pink. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet, leaving the tape on the trim and hardware. Let dry. 2. Tape off two narrow stripes along both edges of the light pink stripe with delicate-surface painter’s tape. Paint them dark pink. Remove all tape while the paint is wet. Let dry. SUPER BAD!

PIE: GETTY IMAGES; COUNTERTOP: GETTY IMAGES/ISTOCKPHOTO

how bad is it to leave a fruit pie sitting out? It’s safe for a fresh fruit pie to sit covered on a counter for hours—but all bets are off after people start grabbing slices. “Once a pie’s been cut up and served—possibly by a few different people—you’re playing Russian roulette with illness-causing microorganisms like staph and E. coli, which can multiply at room temperature,” says Suresh Pillai, Ph.D., head of the Texas A&M University food safety and environmental microbiology program in College Station. Pies with custard or meringue carry a higher risk of salmonella because of the eggs, while cream- or dairybased kinds could lead to listeriosis—which is why those should stay out no longer than an hour. The safest bet for any pie: Dish out some slices, then stash it in the fridge.

good question

how bad is it to wipe off your glasses with a paper towel? “One of the worst things you can do to eyeglasses or sunglasses is clean them with a paper towel,” says Brian Ziegler, director of lab operations at Warby Parker. Same goes for paper napkins and tissues: “Think of them all as fine sandpaper—their coarseness can scratch up a lens,” he says. A wipe-and-swipe habit might also wear away coatings like UV protection, antiglare, anti-smudge, and scratch resistance. Cleaning a pair with a T-shirt is better but still not the best idea, since it’s likely to have debris and body oil embedded in it. Go for a microfiber cloth, as its softness won’t cause micro scratches. If you don’t have a dedicated glasses cleaner, use a dot of dish soap, then rinse—it clears away grime better than hand soap and won’t damage coatings.

Am I supposed to do something with this thing?

how bad is it to not teach your dog tricks? If rolling over and giving paw are not in your dog’s skill set, no worries. A lack of tricks says nothing about his smarts or your discipline skills, assuming your pet generally listens to commands, says Andrea Arden, a dog trainer based in New York City who’s a regular on Today. When pets are showing signs of boredom, however, such as excessive chewing or extreme rowdiness, training them to do tricks is one way to help keep them stimulated. Arden recommends starting with “shake”—it’s

good question

how bad is it to put a plant in a pot that doesn’t have a drainage hole? Your plant is going to be a goner. “Any moisture that the soil can’t absorb stays at the bottom of the pot with no place to drain,” says Chip Tynan, a horticulturist at Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. That creates an ideal environment for fungus to thrive. Over time it will block the plant’s roots from absorbing air, nutrients, and, ironically, water. “It essentially becomes a question of how long this plant can hold its breath,” Tynan says. “And it may look parched—wilting and yellow.” If your heart’s set on a cute hole-free pot, use Tynan’s hack: Place the plant in a smaller pot that has a hole. Then plop that inside your decorative planter on top of a layer of pebbles to catch excess water.

REALLY BAD!

You’re fine as long as you clean it about once a month—especially important if you have allergies—since dust, mold spores, pollen, and animal dander may accumulate on the blades. “As the fan whirls, it blows the particles around, and several hours later, people can wake up stuffy,” says Mark Jacobson, M.D., a doctor in Hinsdale, IL, and fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. To clean your fan, Dr. Jacobson recommends using a damp cloth, since a dry one or a long-handled duster can disperse dust into the air. Some folks use a pillowcase to sweep off and collect dust—just slide the pillowcase over each blade one at a time. To make the chore easier to remember, link it to another monthly task you do, like paying the cable bill or the mortgage.

NOT SO BAD! 76 HGTV Magazine

YOUR PROPERTY Stop problems before they start! From shutters to siding, here’s the lowdown on upkeep.

Driveways are low-maintenance. Squee! Although concrete and asphalt can

78 HGTV Magazine

get small cracks when water seeps in and freezes in colder temps, the cracks are usually patchable with a kit, says Brett Waterman, host of DIY Network’s Restored. “For concrete driveways, apply sealer every few years for protection.” Resurfacing (a pro job) can smooth major alligatoring on asphalt.

Yep, chimneys need to be cleaned. Hire a certified sweep, who will also check for issues like crumbling mortar. An annual cleaning isn’t necessary if you don’t use your fireplace much, says Frank Lesh, spokesperson for the American Society of Home Inspectors. “A good rule: Once you make it through a cord of wood, have your chimney swept.”

Try a little Tree-L-C. First identify which kind you have (check the vTree app). Photos of healthy trees can help you spot iffy leaves, bark, and branches on yours—which may signal pests or disease, says Tchukki Andersen, staff arborist at the Tree Care Industry Association. To head off further decay, tap a pro to remove dead branches.

Siding is washable, just take it easy.

Want to replace the shutters? NBD. Composite and vinyl shutters often cost less than wood and look as great, says Alison Victoria, host of Windy City Rehab. Just bring the measurements of your current ones to a home improvement store. Install new ones with long screws or plastic shutter spikes, which tap in with a hammer. Like the look of yours but not the color? Most are paintable.

ILLUSTRATIONS BY ANA HARD WRITTEN BY AMANDA LECKY

Skip the pressure washer so you don’t damage the paint or finish; a hose is best for wood and composite siding. “Point the nozzle downward, like rainfall—if you spray straight on, water can get under the siding and lead to mold,” says Clint Robertson, cohost of Boise Boys. For stubborn grime, scrub with a polyfiber brush on a long handle.

You don’t need a ladder to spot roof problems.

You might get wasps. Stay calm. “Patch cracks in siding and porch roofs to stop stinging insects from settling in,” says Jim Fredericks, Ph.D., chief entomologist for the National Pest Management Association. Should you spot a bunch, figure out if they’re coming from one source. It’s best to call a pro to remove a nest, as DIYing is risky. If you must, do the deed at dusk or later, when inhabitants are least active.

Sure, you can keep your lawn this green. It comes down to food, water, and a good haircut, says Ben Hamza, Ph.D., a crop and soil sciences expert for TruGreen. Starting in spring, fertilize every six to eight weeks. When it’s a dry summer, water twice a week for about a half hour (early morning is best, with less sun to evaporate droplets). Mow regularly, since clipping more than one-third of the grass’s height at once can stress it out.

Do wellness checks from the ground with a pair of binoculars a couple times a year, and after particularly heavy storms, says Waterman. Asphalt shingles—the most common kind—can last 30 years or more, but sometimes high winds or tree branches will dislodge a few. “A roofer can easily slide in matching ones to prevent leaks,” says Waterman.

your first house

Don’t forget to de-gunk your gutters. “When they’re full of leaves, the downspouts can clog and make water spill over the edge, where it could collect at your foundation or under your roofing and cause water damage,” says Robertson. Clean when leaves are dry and use a gutter scoop to make quick work of the job; flush out finer debris with a hose.

Protect that deck! “Semitransparent stains, which add color but let wood show through, last two to three years, and solid stains three to five,” says restoration pro Nick Slavik, host of Ask a Painter on Facebook Live. Once a year, zap mildew with a deck cleaner and a stiff brush, then rinse with a hose.

Know how to turn off your H2O. That’s in case of a water emergency, like a gushing sprinkler or an overflowing washing machine. The shutoff valve is often located where the main water pipe comes into your home, in the basement or through a front wall, says Chuck White, a vice president for the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association. If an older valve is tight, keep pliers close by.

your first house

It’s not that hard to cool an attic. If yours is unfinished, think airflow, says Mike Barcik, technical principal at Southface Institute. Vents like the gable kind shown let steamy air escape; an energy auditor can determine if you need more. Don’t store boxes on top of exposed insulation on an attic floor—that compresses it, reducing its effectiveness.

Meet your dryer vent. This is where all that warm, moist air pours out. But lint can pile up in the duct that leads to it and become a fire hazard, says Lesh. A couple times a year, clean both ends. Unplug your dryer, disconnect the duct, and remove buildup with a lint brush. Outside, take off the vent hood and delint.

Wait a while before you redo flowers. Sometimes new homeowners get anxious when flowers don’t crop up in the spring. “Be patient; some might be summer or fall bloomers,” says Waterman. If you start digging through beds, you could ruin existing bulbs or roots.

reativity runs in designer Jo Gick’s family. When she was growing up, her dad was always building something in their garage while Jo sat nearby, gluing shims together to make her own masterpiece. Then she married a handy guy, Dave, and they had two kids— Marin, 9, and Doran, 6—who also can’t wait for the next trip to the crafts store. “My motto is if you can’t buy it, DIY it,” says Jo. The family’s home in Chandler, AZ, showcases many of her most clever moves. She and Dave bought the 90 HGTV Magazine

Dave did a lot of the work himself, and Jo’s ingenuity lent each room a personal touch, from feature walls to supercool floors. “I get ideas from everywhere,” says Jo. “It can be something I find in the sale aisle at Target, the architectural details of a building, or fruit trees in my backyard. This L.A. cottage is one lively place to come home to.

i

t’s not every day that a designer gets a request like “I want my house to feel a little silly.” But that’s exactly what comedian and writer Josh Thomas told designer Caitlin Murray. “I like kitsch and whimsy and color, and I was looking to have all of that,” says Josh. The Australian moved to the States in 2018 for his new show Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, on the Freeform channel. He bought a plain 1956 cottage with only 1,100 square feet of living space, then called on Caitlin to bring the zing. She started by painting most of the walls white. “White might not feel like the most obvious choice when you’re going for quirk, but it’s like turning your walls into a canvas so the furniture can be on display,” she says. In Josh’s house, those pieces are a cheeky mix of rainbow-bright hues and funky shapes. Caitlin satisfied Josh’s other demand, dude-proofness, with a couch in a forgiving dark color and durable quartzite counters in the kitchen. “I like to entertain, my friends are disgusting, and I’m not great either, so I couldn’t have a place that was at all precious,” Josh says. His bachelor pad is practical yet packed with personality—silly chic at its best.

living room “I’m way into big colors,” says Josh. Even on the fireplace? Y-e-s! Designer Caitlin went for an offbeat berry shade that doesn’t hold back. To keep the space from looking like a crayon explosion, she blended brights—like a sunny console from Chairish—with more subdued hues, like a cranberry woolblend sofa from Muuto and baby blue chairs from Industry West. A triangle mirror by Consort serves as art: “It’s interesting but simple, so it doesn’t feel distracting,” Caitlin says. The vintage shiny brass coffee table is also from Chairish.

kitchen The counter and the backsplash rock: They’re natural quartzite in check-me-out pink. Caitlin painted the cabinets a light blue gray (Sea Star by Benjamin Moore) to complement the quartzite’s blue veining. Black hardware from Buster + Punch ties into the sleek open shelves. The large workspace came in handy when Josh first moved in. “I tricked new friends into thinking I’m someone who always cooks by making bread for them,” he says, “but only three times, then never again!”

living room A burl-wood-veneer-andLucite sideboard from Modshop at one end of the living room is Caitlin’s cool, unfussy answer to a bar cart. “The inside is filled with stuff like grappa that nobody but me seems to like,” Josh jokes. Goldtoned accessories, including a pineapple from World Market and a coppery vase from Anthropologie, glam it up. Josh already owned the kitschy artwork. The linen curtains, the same as in the dining room, are from Restoration Hardware.

dining room Caitlin chose a fab combo with a side of camp: a mod table from Eurway, vintage velvet chairs from Chairish, and a zebra-print rug from Etsy. At first Josh had his doubts: “Animalprint rugs remind me of something you’d find at an auntie’s house near a Jacuzzi,” he says. “But when I saw it all together, it looked good.”

bathroom Rad: octagonal-tile floors with a mid-century vibe that previous homeowners had installed. Bad: a blah vanity that had to go. Caitlin brought in a new one that’s built from a vintage walnut credenza, then upped the punch with cobalt blue paint on the walls, pink sconces from Amazon, and a geometric rug from The Company Store. “The rest of the house is so energetic, I didn’t want the bathroom to get left behind,” she says.

bedroom Josh wanted the bedroom’s design to have more fun flair too, just in a more subdued way. Caitlin gave this small room grandness with custom raspberry velvet curtains hung from the ceiling and an upholstered platform bed from Blu Dot. A playful duvet cover from Biscuit Home and yellow shams from Target Josh things up.

kitchen is usually the heart of a home, but for a long time the opposite was true in Leslie and Jermaine Hall’s place in New Providence, NJ. “It was just a room you’d pass through to get something to drink,” Leslie says. “No one wanted to spend time in it!” Blame the mauve laminate counters, rust-color clay tile floors, and beige cabinets. To channel their contemporary-yetfun-loving style, the couple hired designer Fawn Galli, who kept the room’s size but scrapped the rest. She started with a simple base (light pine floors, bright white cabinets, and marble countertops) before piling on the playful (graphic wallpaper, multicolor cactus-print fabric, and one wowza light fixture). “I joke that our kitchen looks like it belongs in a Miami condo, not a suburban New Jersey house,” says Leslie. “It’s become the only place where we hang out.” HGTV Magazine 115

in the kitchen LIGHT FIXTURE Call it the sputnik’s funkier cousin: This starburst light, made by U.K. brand Item, features dozens of bone china “rays” that glow softly when it’s on. “The white color fits in, but the shape makes it a standout,” says Leslie.

Self-described lasagna king Jermaine and playall-day Jude take full advantage of the more open layout.

BANQUETTE A custom-made table with a marble top (it’s the same as the countertops) and acrylic legs, paired with tulip chairs from Organic Modernism, may be très glam, but the spot is practical, too—it fits 12, perfect for pizza parties with friends. Leslie instantly adored the cactus-print Missoni Home fabric. “I would have put it everywhere if Fawn hadn’t stopped me,” she says. The prints are by Craig Redman.

Some varieties of the easy-to-grow garden workhorse, like California Giants, have flowers that span 5 inches across. Plant them in groups for the most lush effect.

With a name like Popstars, it’s no surprise this hybrid phlox sports a showy, spiky shape and comes in spectacular colors. The flowers are small but abundant.

lantana

lupine

A relative of verbena, lantana is another loweffort plant that can weather intense sun and a lack of rain. But the best part is all the pretty color combos it comes in.

Cool temps, well-drained soil, and plenty of sunshine are ideal for this late-spring bloomer, which can be grown as an annual or a perennial. The eye-catching spikes span the rainbow.

false indigo

This sun-loving compact plant grows equally well in flower beds and containers. Since it tends to dry out, lay mulch on top of the soil to help it retain moisture.

Once used to create dye, this sturdy plant is drought tolerant. Its buds are often blue, though some types are yellow and age to purple, as shown.

flame of the woods

blazing star

Also commonly referred to by its Latin name, ixora, it flowers year-round in warm climates. Make it a potted annual in colder parts of the country.

While most plants bloom from the bottom to the top, this one’s fuzzy, feathery flowers open top to bottom. Plant in spring for action in midto late summer.

curb appeal

then you’ll also love these cheerful petal-packed flowers aster As other flowers fade away, asters bring vivid color (along with butterflies) to the yard from late summer into fall. Their height and color vary by type—some shoot up to 6 feet tall. Since asters are susceptible to powdery mildew, thin out the stems regularly.

If xeriscaping is your game—as in, landscaping requiring minimal water and maintenance—consider cupid’s dart, used in Greek and Roman love potions, according to lore. Flowers can be white or blue, with dark purple centers. Thin stems make blooms extra easy to cut for bouquets.

strawflower Grown as a perennial in warm climates, this annual gets its name from the bloom’s papery feel. That texture makes these colorful beauties especially great for dried arrangements. They’re a hardy bunch, blossoming from summer until the first frost.
