ILLUSTRATION: CAITLIN-MARIE MINER ONG

As I write this, it’s the first warm day of spring (we work three months in advance in the magazine business), and it’s safe to say, this is finally the weekend you want to be outside all day. My Des Moines neighbors, who, like me, have been hibernating all winter, have come out of their houses to rake and clear up from the deep snow mounds and ice slicks that lingered in the shade until a couple of weeks ago. The kids next door reenact Minecraft (I think) with shrieks of battle and faux injury. There’s the sound of a lawn mower—even though I don’t think the grass is high enough to cut— and I’m truly beginning to feel the promise of summer. It’s hard to laze away the weekend when the weather is this nice. I couldn’t wait to get outside and pull everything in my yard back together after five months of neglect. I lugged the summer pots out of the garage and arranged them on my back terrace. I visited my compost bin and marveled how months of wilted produce from the fridge, coffee grounds, and carrot tops had been transformed into a rich, black superfood for my garden. As I cleaned off the café table and chairs and rescued the patio umbrella from the basement, I started to dream of having people over for outdoor dinners. Ever since I had a roof garden in New York City, I’ve gravitated to flowers with evening fragrance. So I went inside briefly to place an order for tuberoses, nicotiana, Oriental lilies, moonflowers, jasmine, and old-fashioned four-o’clocks. Clearly, I’m eagerly setting a scene for summer. Being outside improves my outlook. The Japanese practice of shinrinyoku, or forest bathing, calls for us to spend time in a woodland environment to lessen stress, lower blood pressure, and mellow angry thoughts. I am also a fan of what I’ll call sky bathing. Stop and think about how you feel when you have nothing over your head other than little fluffy clouds or a dome of stars and planets. I immediately feel lighter and uplifted, especially when having dinner outdoors. If you are lucky to live or visit somewhere where you have a night sky dark enough to see the Milky Way, sky bathing can be even more transporting. You’re likely to see a meteor or a satellite zipping by. Looking at the Milky Way is to stare into the heart of the galaxy we live in, but its spiral shape is invisible to us. As residents of one of the swirling arms, we see the milky band from within (and sideways). I love the perspective this gives me. Even a big problem appears more manageable, and STEPHEN ORR, little annoyances seem like a waste of time. Editor in Chief So don’t forget to get outside and look up. And a instagram @steporr twitter @orrsteporr big PS: Always leave your phone in the house.

Bacteria live in your pores and every layer of skin. Some bacteria are bad, like the ones that contribute to acne. But there are also good bacteria that help take care of your skin. Like therapists for your complexion, “These bacteria keep our skin cells calm and happy,” says Whitney Bowe, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City and the author of The Beauty of Dirty Skin. Tasked with keeping skin moisturized, stimulating collagen production, and defending against infections, good bacteria are essential for maintaining plump, healthy skin. So where can things go wrong? Anything that removes bacteria— harsh cleansers, frequent exfoliation, or antibacterial ingredients—leads to imbalance in the many strains present in skin. In fact, our hygiene habits often hurt the more delicate good bacteria and spare the hardier bad bacteria. “When one or two types of bacteria start to overgrow, they end up crowding out the other bacteria and create a shift in the natural balance,” Bowe says. “When that happens, inflammation sets in.” This can lead

to skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and eczema. An imbalance also reduces the natural anti-aging benefits of bacteria, such as increased moisture and the production of hydrating molecules called ceramides. Restoring balance takes a two-pronged approach. First, cleanse with care. Wash only with a gentle formula, meaning one that doesn’t leave skin feeling tight or squeaky-clean, and limit exfoliation with scrubs or chemical exfoliants (like acids and enzymes) to twice a week. Second, reintroduce good bacteria with prebiotic or probiotic skin-care products. “Probiotics are the living strains [of good bacteria],” Bowe says. “And prebiotics are the food those living strains like to eat. You can think of them as the fertilizer for probiotics.” In addition to beauty products with prebiotics and probiotics, try Bowe’s DIY mask: Combine a cup of plain, full-fat Greek yogurt (with live probiotics); half an avocado; and 1 Tbsp. honey. Mash together and apply to clean skin. Leave on 15 minutes then rinse off. Pat skin dry and apply moisturizer. ■

Take a cue from the local sweet shop and mix candyinspired hues. To keep your room from looking like Willy Wonka’s factory, pick only one or two colors to start, then add small doses of hues within each of those color families. For example, if you pick pink, layer it with oranges and yellows. Temper the potential sweetness with accents in white or gray.

BRIGHTideas

A tiny cottage in Southern California lives a lot larger thanks to a light and airy makeover that blends carefree boho style with glam-forward personality.

T

he fi rst thing we did to the house was the most dramatic move we made,” says designer Tish Key, who transformed this 1924 cottage in Orange, CA, with design partner Laurie Bauch. “The walls were all textured and dingy, so we smoothed them and painted them crisp white, which refreshed the space and gave us a blank canvas to work with.” Once that was set, the designers channeled the modern-bohemian style by layering on texture—sheepskin throws, plush area rugs, embellished textiles—and hanging wallpaper in strategic places. “The look is still laid-back and full of personality,” Bauch says. “It’s just a little more pared down.”

IF YOU HAVE TO PUT YOUR BED IN FRONT OF WINDOWS, YOU MIGHT AS WELL TURN IT INTO A DESIGN STATEMENT. TISH KEY

CALMING NEUTRALS The designers went with an open iron bed frame, right, because it doesn’t block sunlight the way a solid one would. Ruching and a sheepskin pillow make the all-white bedding interesting but don’t compete with the wallpaper. WELL-DRESSED The designers turned an unneeded tiny third bedroom, far left, into a closet. Built-in cabinets, a graphic rug, geometric wallpaper on the ceiling, and a mirrored console match style with function. POWDER PUNCH Because people don’t spend much time in a powder room, left, Key says it’s a good place to try a bold wallpaper like this graphic redand-gold pattern. ■

Like interior designer Alys Protzman herself, the porch on her North Carolina home is full of Southern charm. But it isn’t defined by a single style: Global details and pieces from various eras come together for a blend that is easygoing and warm.

CHILL ZONE HANGING CHAIRS ON THE OPEN PORCH ENHANCE THE CASUAL FEEL.

1

VARY FURNITURE SHAPES. ”A lot of outdoor furniture can be boxy,” interior designer Alys Protzman says. “On a porch, you want things to feel light and airy. If your sofa frame is solid, get chairs that are spindly.” Then switch silhouettes. Barrel-back wicker chairs contrast with the angular daybed and perforated metal tables.

2

MIX STYLES AND ERAS. Alys combines folksy, traditional, and modern accessories—Southwestern pillows, tobacco baskets, and white porcelain bowls and planters—but uses pairs of each so the eclectic blend isn’t haphazard.

3

KEEP THE BACKDROP NEUTRAL. “I love the punch of black and color against an otherwise fairly muted room,” Alys says. She whitewashed the floor and walls so furniture and accessories stand out. Painting the door black adds a high-contrast moment and grounds the perimeter.

4

SHOP ONE-OF-AKIND. Handmade items infuse quick personality. Alys favors Etsy sellers like San Junipero (sanjunipero.etsy.com) and Mackenzie Bryant Co (mackenziebryantco.etsy.com) for pillows made from vintage textiles.

HIT THE DECK [ DO IT YOURSELF]

A DIY blogger imagined so much more than the ordinary 10×10-foot deck that came with her family’s home near Richmond, VA. With vision and lots of carpentry help from her handy husband, Aniko Levai created a split-level outdoor getaway that draws her family of four (and her neighbors) to the backyard for much of the summer.

GREEN POWER Plants in pots link the deck to the backyard landscaping.

BEFORE

START WITH A PLAN Aniko Levai looked forward to meals outside with her husband, Miki, and sons, Bence and Patrick, so she designed the lower deck around a table for four.

44

| June 2019

ANCHOR SEPARATE SPACES Aniko and Miki replaced the old deck and the paver patio with a two-tier pine deck then accented each living space with an indooroutdoor rug.

EXPAND THE ACCESS

INSTALL A KITCHEN

Without the old stairway railings, the stairs now run the width of the deck for easy fl ow and extra seating. (Check local codes before building or remodeling a deck.)

Instead of a built-in kitchen, Aniko chose a modular system from Lowe’s for ease of installation (the appliances roll into place) and the option of changing the layout.

In Charleston, window boxes are an art form in themselves. We asked local design pros for their tips.

C R E ATE A NATU R AL R HY TH M

Repetition is a foolproof way to create a cohesive look in a window box. Designer Kelly Megeath planted this 15-foot-long box with repeating groups of ivy ball topiary, chartreuse coleus, and white caladium for a sense of flow and order.

50

| June 2019

L

ike any great accessory, window boxes can have transformative powers. “They do so much to dress up a home, even when you’re inside looking out,” says garden designer Kelly Megeath of Charleston, SC. Window boxes also give gardeners an affordable outlet to do what they love most: experiment. “By swapping a few plants in and out, you can keep reinventing a box, even over the course of one season,” Megeath says. In Charleston’s historic district—where window boxes often stand in for front yards at homes that open to the sidewalk— locals embrace that spirit of creativity. “Window boxes are a phenomenon here,” says local garden designer Paul Saylors. “Every year, people get more ambitious, more inventive.” Charleston’s window boxes show off the wide range of possibilities a few feet of soil can offer. We took notes.

WINDOW DRESSING

Keep in mind a few design principles, then unleash your creativity.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS SUPPORT SYSTEM “People often underestimate how heavy a window box full of soil and plants can be,” Saylors says. Buy a sturdy box; he recommends ones made of a hardwood like redwood or cedar rather than pine, which rots quickly. Secure with window box brackets.

SOIL & DRAINAGE

F I N D YO U R FOCAL PO I NT

TH I N K ABO UT TE X TU R E

Choosing the centerpiece first means the rest of your plant picks will fall into place. Here, designer Kris Brewer started with a lemon cypress topiary. Coleus bridges the colors of the foliage and the brick, and creeping wire vine loosens the design.

“Texture can make as much of an impact as color,” Brewer says. She achieved masses of it by mixing wispy purple fountain grass, croton, and spilling sweet potato vine. The form differences ensure each plant stands out even though the box is tightly packed.

Always make sure your box has drainage holes. To aid drainage, place 2 inches of packing peanuts or old wine corks in the bottom of the box. Cover them with landscape fabric to prevent soil from seeping out. Fill with potting soil.

SPACING Place plants a few inches apart to give them room to fill out. If you want immediate impact, you can plant closer, of course. “Just know you’ll need to pinch, prune, and sometimes pull out plants more often to prevent overcrowding,” Megeath says.

WATERING

TAKE CUES FROM THE LANDSCAPE For this garden door container, Saylors planted red-orange copperleaf and variegated sea hibiscus to tie into the color of a nearby Japanese maple. He filled it out with English ivy, which also grows in the backyard, plus Spanish moss.

52

| June 2019

STAY CO N S I STE NT

Megeath riffed on a single color palette in plantings all around this house—green and white, with hits of yellow. Because this window box hangs near an outdoor dining table, she also tucked in fragrant herbs like thyme, oregano, and mint as fillers.

As with all container plantings, choose plants with similar water and light needs, and expect to water them more often than those in the ground. Water thoroughly once the soil has dried out.

i did it!

A couple who loves to travel poured their creative energy into revamping a camper, outfitting it with home-away-from-home amenities for special family vacations.

BEFORE

Kate Malo dreamed of memory-making road trips. She pictured her young family—husband Dave, son Thomas, 8, and daughter Allie, 5— hiking, building campfi res, and taking in the scenery. Fueling that vision: a 2007 Four Winds camper handed down from Dave’s parents. To make it their own, Kate and Dave modifi ed the built-in furniture, covered the old fl oor, and, Kate says, “painted every square inch of the walls and cabinets.” Six weeks later, the Des Moines-area family headed for the Black Hills and Rocky Mountain National Park, enjoying the journey as much as the destinations. Turn the page to peek inside their RV. The Malo family spent $1,000 updating this 26-foot camper, which includes two bedrooms and a full kitchen.

TUCK IN STORAGE

In the kids’ bedroom, Kate and Dave turned a full-size bottom bunk into a twin to make

space for a shelf unit. A wall-mount wire basket at the foot of each bed holds books.

GET CREATIVE

A framed mirror (Kate could go bigger by not centering it over the sink) and a bold border of self-stick floor tiles upgrade the teeny bath.

long with the Fourth of July and the arrival of fireflies, slicing into summer’s first tomato is one of the season’s most anticipated events. And though grocery stores and farmers markets sell lots of new varieties, those can’t beat eating a just-ripe tomato from your own yard. Thanks to flavor-forward heirlooms and hybrids in new shapes and colors, our passion for homegrown tomatoes keeps growing.

TIPS & TRENDS

WHAT’S NEW WITH TOMATOES

“Gardeners want deliciousness, and they’re always eager to try something new,” says Diane Blazek, executive director of All-America Selections, a plant-testing organization. Learn what’s trending:

Cherry varieties (smaller than a quarter) are the first tomatoes to ripen in the garden and are now available in more shapes, including elongated grape-, strawberry-, and roma-like.

COLORS

Tomatoes keep pushing the color envelope. Today’s palette includes orange, pink, red, yellow, and purple, plus variegated gold, orange, red, and green.

3

GRAFTS

How do you make heirlooms easier to grow? Graft them onto disease-resistant rootstock. Grafted plants are pricier (about $8 per plant), but you’ll get increased yield.

Follow these planting and pruning strategies for a successful harvest.

Can’t wait for that first tomato? Cherry varieties ripen in about 60 days (versus 90-plus days for beefsteaks).

Sweet Pea Currant, left, produces foot-long clusters packed with sweet, dime-size fruit. Warning: They’re easy to eat while gardening. The new ‘Fire Fly’ hybrid has pale yellow, translucent skin. The 1-inch fruits (between currant and cherry size) have a slightly acidic flavor.

Yellow Brandywine, above, is the golden version of the popular Pink and Black Brandywine beefsteaks. The fleshy fruit is mildly tart. Small-space gardeners take note: ‘Atlas’ is a container-friendly beefsteak hybrid with 1-pound fruit.

SAL AD ET TE

These midsize tomatoes are bigger than cherry varieties (2–4 ounces) and juicier than paste types. Black Vernissage, above, has dark red skin with green stripes and a slightly smoky flavor.

Dense-fl esh types with fewer seeds, including romas, make great sauce. Gezahnte, above, has distinct ribs (its name means toothed in German) and slips its skin easily when blanched.

WABI-SABI

Beauty in imperfection. Everything gets better with age. Appreciation for simplicity and the things you already have. Sound refreshing? This Japanese way of living comes with full permission to be flawed. W H AT I S WA B I - S A B I ? Chances are you’ve heard of it, but let’s break it down: Wabi means simplicity, and sabi means beauty in age. Together, wabi-sabi forms a Japanese aesthetic all about embracing imperfection. The main concept is simple: Nothing is perfect, permanent, or finished, and that’s part of the beauty. WHY IS IT TRENDING? In a world dominated by social media perfection, wabi-sabi is a welcome invitation to pause and appreciate what’s real. Think of it as the Japanese version of hygge, the Danish mood of coziness.

PRODUCED BY: JESSICA THOMAS

H OW C A N I T RY I T ? Humble, organic materials like wood, stone, metal, and linen are associated with the look. So rely on those elements when setting a table for company, for example. Or simply mix what you have without fretting about whether everything looks perfect. And don’t worry about ironing linens; embrace their natural wrinkles.

Dishes that look handmade— like these with wobbly edges and unique glazes—are wabi-sabi.

or years, Adriana Berry was an enthusiastic plant collector, always filling the beds around her backyard lawn with finds. Her love of plants ultimately inspired her to pursue a degree in landscape design. With that career change (she was formerly an occupational therapist), she started reimagining her 1,000-square-foot yard entirely. “My plans kept evolving,” she says. “I had to finally tell my friends, ‘Make me stop.’” She landed on nixing lawn and using low-maintenance pavers to create outdoor living spaces with a modern bent. Her love of plants—especially those with bold foliage that remind her of her childhood in Brazil—is still on full display in lush beds and planters. The result is a space that feels more like an exotic vacation destination than an urban backyard.

Plants like variegated buckthorn and birchleaf spirea thrive in Portland’s warm, dry summers but can take the rainy winters too. In the side yard, Adriana designed a path of staggered pavers to encourage visitors to slow down. Tall planters reinforce the rhythm.

A trellis, bottom right, at the end of the yard obscures a plain wood fence. The metalwork recalls stained-glass patterns from Adriana’s grandparents’ home in Brazil.

STEAK OUT

Grab your tongs and fire up the grill. You’re about to be the envy of the neighborhood and master of the steak house steak. THE MISSION Any steak cooked over a fire is a summer winner. But when you want an exceptional steak on a Saturday night, it’s time to break out a few extra tricks.

THE TECHNIQUE Every season a gadget or technique gets backyard cooks buzzing. This year it’s the reverse sear, and for good reason. You start by grilling a thickcut steak low and slow, which ensures the meat cooks evenly from center to surface. Then you finish by searing over fiery heat. Because the steak is warm and the surface is dry, you get that seared, browned crust rapidly. (Searing a moist steak from the fridge takes more time, potentially making the first bite tough.)

The reverse sear takes a little more effort but pays off when you’ve invested in a quality steak.

We got the lowdown from Jamie Purviance (known as Weber’s master griller and teacher), Aaron Franklin (pitmaster and owner of Franklin Barbecue in Austin, TX), and Elizabeth Karmel (author and founder of girlsatthegrill.com). Then we tested and curated some of their best tips to elevate your skills at the grill.

THE IDEAL CUT Forget thin prepackaged steak. The reverse sear warrants a seriously thick cut (about 1½ inches—ask the butcher to cut them for you if necessary). New York strip and ribeye are most commonly grilled this way, but we heaped all our love on the ribeye for its combo of flavor and texture.

Our pick: a bone-in ribeye.

HOW TO REVERSE SEAR

1 Get Your Grill Right Prepare your grill for a two-zone fire, below.

2 Start Low

Grill steaks indirectly in a closed grill. Like cooking in a low oven, the gentle heat moves slowly to the center of the steak without overcooking the outside. Purviance suggests keeping heat at 300°F.

3 Target 100°F

Pull steaks off the grill when they reach an internal temp of 100°F. They won’t look delicious yet, but

don’t panic. Let them rest to redistribute juices while you stoke the fire.

4 Finish Hot

A good sear requires blistering heat (450°F to 500°F). For charcoal, the coals should be hot enough to ignite more briquettes. If not, light new briquettes in a chimney then spread them across the grate. For gas, ignite the center burner and adjust heat to high.

5 The Sear

This final step is what develops the complex flavors we crave. Sear steaks over direct heat 4 to 5 minutes, turning often until well-browned. Full recipe on page 122.

Grill Setup for Two-Zone Fire B O N E- I N OR B O N E LE S S?

For Franklin, the answer is always bone-in. The rib bone insulates the meat, which slows cooking. If you’re a grilling newbie, this buys a few minutes leeway in timing. A bone-in steak is also easier to flip and move.

Light all burners to preheat the grill. Turn off the center burner to create a cool zone below steaks for indirect cooking. If your grill doesn’t have a temperature gauge, use an oven thermometer to monitor the heat.

Experts hotly debate the best time to salt a steak. A Franklin held a side-bySEASONED side taste-off of ribeyes DEBATE salted immediately before cooking and up to 48 hours before. The winner: the 48-hour steak. As the steak stands, it pulls salt into the muscle, which, of course, helps with flavor but also contributes to a more tender, evenly cooked steak. If that’s beyond your planning scope, Franklin suggests a minimum of 4 hours.

or

Ignite briquettes (50 to 75 for a 22-inch grill) with vents open. Once covered with ash, bank half the coals on opposite sides of the grate, leaving a cool zone in the middle for indirect cooking. Set rack in place.

The perfect blend of taste and tenderness, the ribeye is also one of the most forgiving steaks due to all that marbling. mie urvi nce

RIPPLE EFFECT Jessica Swaney has always been a collector at heart, but it was her years as a home-goods buyer that taught her the power of one-of-a-kind treasures. In her Raleigh, NC, home, each room started with one standout find and evolved from there.

102

| June 2019

BISTRO CHAIRS

This outdoor space was a big selling point for Jessica and Ben Swaney. It adds precious living space to their 1,700-squarefoot house, so Jessica worked hard to make it feel like an extension of the inside. She started with bistro chairs from Serena and Lily that refl ect the interior’s recurring blue-and-white palette, then she gave the natural wood a fl oor-to-ceiling glossy white paint job— another parallel with the inside.

Crisscrossing strands of string lights stand in for overhead lighting.

LEATHER SOFA

“I had to have a leather sofa,” Jessica says. “We have a huge standard poodle and a cat who likes to pick at furniture. Leather just looks better over time, so I don’t stress about scratches or spills.” Above it, a framed piece of Indian embroidery echoes the sofa’s scale and warm tone. It’s one of a series of patterned textiles on throw pillows, a re-covered vintage chair, and a side table draped in fabric from Istanbul. “You don’t need a seamstress; it’s OK if it hangs a little long or short in some areas. That’s what makes it effortless.”

WHEN YOU’RE FILLING A LARGE WALL, YOU NEED A PIECE WITH SCALE TO MAKE THE ROOM FEEL COZY. FABRIC

A console table, right, features a stack of folded fabric—a sort of album from Jessica’s travels. “Textiles are easy to pack and easy to store, so I always bring a piece home. Whenever I have a new upholstery project, I have these great fabrics on hand.”

BOOKS

“We didn’t use the dining room often (far right), so arranging books and accents on the table is a way I could use the space and show off my collections.”

104

| June 2019

PAINTING

When they moved in, the first thing they bought was a large painting by local artist Sally King Benedict. “What better way to celebrate the start of a chapter and a new house than with a piece of art?” Jessica says. Blues tones from the portrait appear throughout the house.

Jessica’s collection of shells brings nature inside.

“I love blue-andwhite ginger jars. Collections become statements when they’re grouped together.”

WHITE

Before moving in, they decided that every room in the house needed a paint job. Jessica used Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White (OC-149) throughout. “It was hard to choose paint when

106

the design was so unsettled. I am clearly drawn to pattern and color and a mix of textiles, so I figured with white the eye is at least able to rest between the layers,” she says. She also chose white support pieces like curtains, lampshades, and

frames, and even painted some vintage finds like the wicker screen in the sunroom, above left. Not all antiques were transformed though. “I’ve collected some traditional pieces of classic brown furniture. For a while everyone was

painting it, but I love that these are timeless and can grow with me. I try to use them in a new way instead of changing their look,” she says, noting the secretary, above right, that displays photos and travel mementos. n

HEADBOARD

Jessica used vintage blue-and-white fabric from her collection to cover the headboard. “This is the only room we painted a color. I love blues and greens together. It’s super calming,” she says.

The blue quilt is new but looks vintage. “The dog naps here, so this is an extra layer I can easily strip to wash.”

When Gaby Dalkin, opposite, gathers friends for dinner, she hosts outside whenever possible. “It not only is the fastest way to get people to unwind but also keeps some of the mess out of the house, she says.

crowd pleaser If Gaby Dalkin could bottle anything and share it with the world— other than her delicious vinaigrettes—it would be the California lifestyle. She hasn’t figured out how to actually put that in a jar, but she has been serving it up for the past decade on her popular site, What’s Gaby Cooking, and continues in her latest cookbook. “To me, California is a state of mind more than it is a place,” says Gaby, who lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Thomas Dawson. “Everything here is refreshingly laid-back, which is exactly how I feel about making meals and entertaining. Nothing should ever be too fussy or require too much work.” In the summer, Gaby regularly hosts backyard get-togethers, and her aim is always to serve flavorful food that people will flip over without spending hours in

the kitchen. Fresh summer produce is key: “The vegetables are perfect and bright and need little interference, so I fill the table with all their beautiful color and goodness.” But her biggest secret is a relatively simple menu that can be made mostly ahead and served at room temperature. This spread centers around baby back ribs Gaby bakes in advance then throws on the grill at party time. A day or two before, she’ll also prep all the vegetables, whip up a couple of easy dips for a crudité platter, and make her s’mookies (a chocolate chip cookie and s’mores hybrid Gaby’s friends regularly beg for). If you’re at all intimidated by entertaining, the beauty of prepping ahead is that you can do it at your own pace while no one’s watching. Helping people relax and enjoy the process of cooking and entertaining is one of the primary goals of Gaby’s ROMESCO blog. Plus, as she puts it, she DIP wants to sit down at the table, relax with friends, and get her hands on the food. QUICK PICKLES

People can’t take themselves too seriously when they’re gnawing on a rib with barbecue sauce dripping down their wrists. 110

| June 2019

ROMESCO DIP Gaby considers this chunky dip made with roasted red peppers and almonds to be the thicker, smokier, spicier Spanish cousin of tomato sauce.

BABY BACK RIBS AND QUICK PICKLES The morning of the party, Gaby bakes the ribs in a beer bath so they turn out supermoist and then makes a batch of pickles to serve with them. When guests arrive, all she has to do is grill the ribs about 15 minutes to “get those beautiful char marks.”

ROASTED RED PEPPER PANZANELLA “I love salads, but I really, really love bread,” Gaby says. “Nothing makes me happier than ripping up a loaf of country bread and dousing it with olive oil.” She grills the bread alongside the ribs, and tops the dish with creamy Burrata.

CHARRED CORN WITH POBLANOS AND FETA

B A BY B AC K RIBS

Shucking the corn before grilling is key for this corn salsaturned-salad. “I like to get a nice char on the kernels for more intense flavor. Plus, if you grill after shucking, all those little silks you may have missed seem to magically fall off.”

The pea gravel paths, above, provide drainage and are easier to maintain than grass, though they do need regular weeding. Riddle designed five raised beds, opposite, filled with annuals and perennials that peak in high summer. Hydrangeas and clematis hide the fence to give the space a secretgarden feel.

FIELD EDITOR: TOVAH MARTIN

or Rebecca Robertson, a quick, early-morning commune with her garden is as invigorating as her cup of coffee. “I fling open the kitchen windows, and the fragrances flood in,” she says. “It’s absolute heaven.” The sweet peas, globe thistles, phlox, and calamint are planted so close to her 1905 Catskills house that contented bees are within earshot. Then there’s the chromotherapy. “Rebecca is not keen on hot colors,” says garden designer Dean Riddle, who collaborated on the project. “So our scheme mingles soft purples and creamy pinks with pale blues and toned-down magentas.” Rebecca, who is president and executive producer of the Park Avenue Armory, a center for visual and performing arts in Manhattan, is decisive by nature. For the initial meetings with Riddle, she showed up with catalogs covered in sticky notes and pages torn from magazines depicting romantic old cottage gardens. Riddle took that inspiration and gave it an update by designing a series of beds that are dense with flowers yet feel subtly restrained thanks to a limited color palette and orderly approach to plant placement. He does, however, let many plants go to seed. “Volunteer plants lend a spontaneity that’s otherwise hard to achieve,” Riddle says. For example, sweet-scented nicotiana, one of Rebecca’s favorites, often pop up in unexpected places. “Every time I see one,” she says, “it’s a surprise and a pleasure.”

To create what Riddle describes as a “tumble of flowers”—a hallmark of a cottage garden—he places plants closer together than growers’ instructions suggest, thinning them in the spring as they mature. A practical upside to the abundance is that it leaves little room for weeds.

“A COTTAGE GARDEN IS ALL ABOUT PROFUSION,” SAYS DEAN RIDDLE. BUT HE PUTS HIS OWN TOUCH ON THE TRADITIONAL STYLE.

RIFF AND REPEAT “A lot of cottage gardens spring up in a random way—one of this flower, two of that,” he says. But he likes a collection of flowers in a strict color palette. He repeats

Rustic materials reinforce the cottage garden look, and Riddle likes to use native materials when possible. He had a fence built of local black locust, ash, and hemlock branches. “By using local materials, the garden reflects its place rather than imposing too much on it,” he says.

Shrubs like yew and boxwood are mainstays of more formal cottage gardens, but Riddle departed from them and used almost strictly herbaceous plants. (‘Limelight’ hydrangeas in tree forms are the exception.) “These looser plants make the garden look more semiformal,” he says.

HAND

GIVING HANDSONLY CPR TO SOMEONE IN CARDIAC ARREST CAN DOUBLE OR TRIPLE THEIR CHANCES OF SURVIVAL. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO HELP SAVE A LIFE.

Shane McGovern was jogging in his New Orleans neighborhood when a neighbor ran out of her home, yelling for help. Shane rushed into the house and found the young woman’s father in bed, his face blue. Shane thought back to an episode of the TV show The Office, where the characters had taken a CPR training class. “I remember Michael Scott crouched over the dummy, practicing doing compressions, and that clicked into place,” he says. So while they waited for the ambulance, Shane performed what is called handsonly CPR, when you do only chest compressions (no mouth-to-mouth). Shane is one of thousands of bystanders who have stepped in to help someone in cardiac arrest when time is so critical. For every minute the heart has stopped, the survival rate decreases by 10 percent. Within five minutes, brain cells begin to die. “The most important thing is to keep the blood

[ MORE

moving throughout the body, and that’s what you’re doing with the chest compressions,” says Benjamin Abella, M.D., director of Penn Medicine’s Center for Resuscitation Science and an emergency medicine physician in Philadelphia. Done correctly, hands-only CPR is as effective on adults as mouthto-mouth, and experts hope that more people who are either uncomfortable with or not trained in traditional CPR will be willing to perform hands-only. One way to remember how to do the chest compressions is to sing a song with the right beat in your head. That’s what David Ramirez did when he saw coworker Monique Brathwaite collapse in 2016. “I remembered watching a video on hands-only CPR, and they gave the Bee Gees ‘Stayin’ Alive’ as the guideline,” David says. “I had the song in my head and kept praying ‘keep alive, keep alive’ to the rhythm.” Thanks to David, Monique was able to receive medical treatment and recovered. “You can’t wait for help to arrive,” says Holly Andersen, M.D., a cardiologist at New YorkPresbyterian hospital and director of education and outreach at the Ronald O. Perelman Heart Institute. “It’s great to be certified in CPR, but you don’t have to be. And the worst thing you can do is to do nothing.”

[ H OW -T O ]

HANDSONLY CPR CALL 911, THEN START CHEST COMPRESSIONS

If the person in cardiac arrest is unresponsive and not breathing normally, kneel next to her torso. Place one hand on top of the other and interlace your fingers. Place the heel of your bottom palm on the center of the victim’s chest. Position your shoulders directly over your hands with your arms straight so you can do the compressions efficiently. PUSH HARD AND FAST

Use your body weight to push down at least 2 inches and do two compressions per second. KEEP IT UP

Don’t stop until the ambulance arrives.

WAYS T O L E A R N ]

Check out these resources for learning the techniques: n At cpr.heart.org you can learn traditional and hands-only CPR and find in-person classes near you. n At handsonly.nyc you’ll find an instructional video for hands-only CPR. n The American Red Cross First Aid app also includes a tutorial. n

TO DO

I CAN’T FALL ASLEEP

YOU

THE IDEAL NAP A short snooze can help you get the hours of sleep you need. Just limit the nap to 20–30 minutes no later than early afternoon. That’s least likely to cause grogginess or interfere with falling asleep at night.

S O LV E I T Many people expect to go from a day of flying at full throttle to a complete stop on command, says Rubin Naiman, Ph.D., clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Arizona. But even fighter planes decelerate before touching down. Do the same for yourself by establishing a bedtime routine that signals to your brain and body when it’s time to release the energy of the day. The most crucial step: Disconnecting from screens at least an hour before bed. The light they emit (even in nighttime mode, some research recently discovered) suppresses melatonin, a hormone that helps you sleep. It’s OK if it takes you a while to get situated and comfortable when you get into bed, but if you’re tossing for 20 minutes or more, get up and do something relaxing in dim light. Staying awake in bed creates what experts call learned insomnia, which means you’re learning to associate the bed with restlessness and frustration.

THE ISSUE

YOUR TEENS

CAN YOU CATCH UP ON SLEEP? Not really. Instead of sleeping in after a shortage, which can worsen the situation by making it harder to get to sleep at night, return to your regular schedule. After two or three good nights, your body will bounce back.

THEY WON’T GO TO SLEEP

S O LV E I T Teens need more sleep than adults and should aim for eight to 10 hours. Trouble is, when kids hit their teen years, their body clocks change so they’re not tired until 10 or 11 p.m. So it’s biology, not just technology (or stubbornness), keeping them up, says Wendy Troxel, Ph.D., a senior behavioral and social scientist at the RAND Corporation. Early school start times don’t jibe with teens’ natural circadian rhythms, so many parents and doctors are advocating to make that first bell later. (Check out startschoollater.net.) Always encourage consistent bedtime and wake-up routines for teens.

SNACKS TO HELP YOU SNOOZE

Certain foods can help you wind down. A combination of protein and complex carbs is best because it helps satisfy a grumbling tummy and delivers tryptophan (which causes sleepiness) to your brain. CHEESE + WHOLE GRAIN CRACKERS

Avoid ice cream and cookies, which can give you a rush of energizing glucose.

PERCENT OF TEENS AREN’T GETTING THE SLEEP THEY NEED.

THE ISSUE

THEY WON’T GET OFF THEIR PHONES OR LAPTOPS S O LV E I T Their success at unplugging starts with you being a good example. “Make it part of the family routine,” Troxel says. “Have a shared phone-charging space (away from all bedrooms) where everyone disconnects at least an hour before bedtime.” You might get pushback, but after a week or two it will become habit, and kids will see how much better they sleep. If your kids wake up to sneak peeks at their devices during the night, check into having your provider shut down service during certain hours. n

GOOD NEWS MENOPAUSE the

about

That’s not a typo! “The change” doesn’t have to be miserable. Here’s how to protect your health and thrive.

HORMONE THERAPY CAN HELP

The hallmark change of menopause is that your ovaries make much less of the hormones estrogen and progesterone, causing symptoms like hot flashes. Hormone therapy (HT) involves taking estrogen or a combo of estrogen and progesterone (or a synthetic progestin) to even levels. If you’ve had a hysterectomy, your doctor will prescribe estrogen HT. After a 2002 study found the long-term use of HT can raise the risk of heart disease and other conditions, people shied away from it. Since dozens of other studies and further analysis of the original study, experts now say that women who get severe hot flashes or are at high risk for bone loss (which can accelerate at menopause) can take HT if they’re not at high risk for breast cancer, heart disease, or stroke. Doctors recommend taking HT at the lowest dose for the shortest amount of time.

MIGRAINES MIGHT GO AWAY

Because you’re making much less estrogen once you hit menopause, you no longer have the monthly increase and decrease that can be a cause of migraines. More good news is that no more periods means no more PMS. And as the fluctuations in estrogen steady at menopause, other hormone-fueled issues like fibroids and endometriosis will likely improve or even vanish, says JoAnn Pinkerton, M.D., executive director of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

PELVIC EXERCISES WORK

Due to the decrease in estrogen, the bladder and pelvic tissues can weaken, causing issues like leaking (sigh). But research shows that women can see up to a 70-percent improvement in symptoms if they strengthen the pelvic floor that supports the bladder by doing exercises called kegels—remember to fully relax after each squeeze. One study found that women in yoga programs designed to strengthen pelvic muscles had a 70-percent reduction in leakage. Get poses at BHG.com/Yoga.

THIS IS PERIMENOPAUSE You don’t actually go through menopause; you arrive at it once you haven’t had a period for one year. The time before that (often starting in your mid-40s), when hormone levels start to drop and periods can become irregular, is called perimenopause. Your doctor may test your FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) levels to see where you are in the process, but test results can fluctuate. BY L E S L I E P E P P E R

KEEP AN EYE ON VITAM I N D

Lower estrogen levels put you at a higher risk of osteoporosis, but vitamin D helps protect your bones by promoting calcium absorption. Get your D levels tested to find out if you need to take a supplement.

EXE RC I S E Strength training (lifting weights or resistance exercises like push-ups) helps maintain muscle mass, which gives your metabolism a boost and slows bone loss, says Andie Melendez, M.S.N., R.N., national secretary of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses.

YOU R S KI N The decrease in oil caused by reduced estrogen means you’re way less prone to breakouts. Instead, dryness might be an issue. Try washing with a mild cleanser (soap can be drying) and applying moisturizer (look for one with hyaluronic acid) right after a shower to lock in moisture. n June 2019 |

BETTER PETS

LET’S

EXERCISE

Working in activity every day is key to keeping your furry family members fit and healthy. We’ve got ideas for everyone to bust a move.

Exercise helps cats and dogs produce feel-good hormones that strengthen their immunity.

WALK THIS WAY

When it comes to exercising dogs, walking and running are king. “Continuous aerobic activity strengthens their muscles and heart,” says Ernie Ward, D.V.M., founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. The guideline is 30 minutes to two hours a day of aerobic activity, depending on age and breed. A few ways to make sure their walks are good exercise: Do splits. Go faster for half of the walk so your dog focuses on moving continuously versus repeatedly stopping to sniff. Try interval training. Alternate walking fast for one minute and slower for one minute. Take a play break. Carry a favorite toy (preferably one you can have a session of fetch with), then play a game at the halfway point.

■ WEATHERPROOF THEIR WORKOUT

Don’t let rainy days sideline you. Do laps at a pet-friendly store like Tractor Supply Co., Home Depot, or PetSmart. At home, play scent games, recommends Stephen DeBono, pet behavior manager at Bideawee. Put your dog in stay while you hide treats, then encourage her to find them. CONSIDER A DOGGY GYM OR CLUB

Fit clubs for canines are a good way to log exercise, play, and socialization time. But make sure the facility is run by knowledgeable staff who use rewardbased training methods. Many have a free trial visit or a drop-in day rate, which can be as low as $12.

FOR CATS

■ USE THEIR HUNTING INSTINCTS

Bringing out their instincts to pounce, stalk, and hunt is a great way to motivate them to exercise, Ward says. Use feather dancers and toys that BY K A R E N A S P

require movement to interact. The goal is three to five minutes of play three times a day. MAKE FEEDING FITNESS-ORIENTED ■

Rather than feeding your cat at ground level every meal, Ward suggests putting out one meal low and another high—on a cat perch, for instance. Or try an interactive feeder or a puzzle toy like Doc & Phoebe’s Indoor Hunting Feeder that engages their hunt-play instincts and rewards with food. ■ ENRICH THEIR ENVIRONMENT

Look around your house from your cat’s perspective and think about how to make it more interactive. Try a cat perch or cat tree or a vertical scratching post that they stand to use. Cats love exploring small spaces. Got an empty box? Put it out and move it every few days to give your cat someplace new to jump in and out of. ■
