CREATE THE CLEAN, CRISP LINES OF A TIMBER LOOK WITH LINEA WEATHERBOARD

“We wanted a low-maintenance Hamptons home for our family, and we got our dream.” JOE DIMECH

STYLE

FOREVER HOME WHEN JOE DIMECH DECIDED TO BUILD A MODERN HAMPTONS-ST YLE HOME, LINEA™ WE ATHERBOARD WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BE HIS FIRST CHOICE. s the Managing Director of building company Leneeva Homes, builder Joe Dimech had the luxury of designing his dream Hamptons-style home with the best materials on the market. But for Joe and his wife Jenny, the decision was about more than just bricks and mortar.

looks visually appealing but was designed to last. “Linea Weatherboard is the best weatherboard product on the market,” says Joe. “All you need to do is install it, paint it, and you’re done. It doesn’t rot, it doesn’t warp and you’ll get to enjoy it forever.”

ENDURING BEAUTY

A DREAM REALISED

Joe and Jenny ensured that every aspect of their new home tied in with the Hamptons look of relaxed, elegant and modern living. From the oak floors to the natural stone fireplace, timber panel accents and coastal-style kitchen, every element exudes comfort, sophistication and family-first living. For the exterior, Joe chose Linea Weatherboard from the James Hardie range in the 180-millimetre profile to create an exterior style that not only

For Joe’s family, relocating from their three-acre property in Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula to Highett just outside the CBD was a lifestyle change they were more than willing to make. With three teenagers, Joe and Jenny decided it was time to swap the seaside for the city. Moving the family closer to public transport, universities and other amenities was important for Joe’s growing teenagers and the family’s changing lifestyle needs.

RETAIL THERAPY

I

have to admit, I have a bit of a tumultuous relationship with shopping. Like many of you, my days are usually pretty packed so when buying a new sofa appears on my to-do list, I often wish that someone could just step in and do the hard yards for me. Which is why we decided to create this very special Home Beautiful Shopping Issue. Of course, we pride ourselves on bringing you the best decorating buys in every issue of HB, but this month, with fabulously chilly shopping weather upon us, the talented HB team has searched through the new season’s looks, products and pieces – from brands you’ll know, to some you might not have heard of but will now never forget – to bring you more than 350 gorgeous finds I know you’ll love. Our talented style editor Fiona Michelon kicks the special into high gear from page 41 with our Style File. Within these pages, Fiona has created the most divinely decorated living spaces – from an elegant lounge room through to a cosy outdoor sanctuary – showcasing beautiful pieces (just wait until you see the silhouette on the ‘Blake’ velvet chairs from Life Interiors on page 47), and reveals to us exactly how to bring these pieces together in your own home. And there’s more! Fiona has also curated a shopping list of essentials (well, possibly not essential, but almost) to add to your must-have list. I’ve certainly added a few to mine and I think these will be a lot easier to make happen than a new sofa. Also, keep an eye out for the little swing tags scattered throughout the issue, from our news pages (from page 23) right through to our Bathroom Style Special (from page 173) – these are the top shopping buys the team has found and just had to share. As our fabulous editor Sarah has recently returned from maternity leave, it will be her lovely face that you will see on this page from next month. Thank you for having me here, it has been so much fun. I look forward to working with Sarah and the team to continue to bring you lots more ideas, inspiration and stunning homes every month.

HB CHATS TO CHARLOTTE VALENTINE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF THE SYDNEYBASED CUSHION LABEL KLOVAH

How did Klovah come to be? I was working in fashion, but I always knew that I wanted my own brand. The older I got, the more my love of homewares and interiors grew, so it felt natural to create a homewares label. Where do you find inspiration for new collections? With a background in textiles and fashion, I’m very passionate about quality fabrics and detailed design. The inspiration comes from the raw materials – whether it’s a chunky brass zipper or raw linen. Where are your pieces made? I work closely with local Sydney seamstresses who create all our cushions. All materials are also sourced locally in Sydney – and I still sew the first sample myself. What are your top tips for styling with cushions? Opt for several cushions in the same leather, but in different shapes. Then, add one or two complementary tones in a different texture, such as linen. What can we expect next from Klovah? I am looking at more creative collaborations with local artisans and stylists. It’s a fun process, with really positive outcomes. Visit klovah.com.

1 | MOXOM AND WHITNEY Lou Moxom and Belinda Whitney consider themselves one of the first florists in Canberra to “break the rules”. They moved to the street permanently five years ago, determined to deliver flowers with a difference. With plants suspended from tall ceilings and a store that’s overflowing with fresh blooms of all shades and varieties, it certainly doesn’t feel like any ordinary florist. “We banned products that have had their day, we refused to copy anything and we try to source products ethically and honestly,” says Lou. “We like to think of our store as a little floral cave, a green oasis in the city.”

Founder Brian Tunks started his brand more than 20 years ago and today the Braddon store is one of two locations where you’ll find the wares in Canberra. “This store is more of a reflection of my personal style,” he says. With walls painted in deep, moody tones, shelving units Brian designed in India and a long narrow table that was once a school desk, the eclectic fitout still manages to let the colourful creations take centrestage.

Belinda and Jochen opened Timber and Tailor in March 2015. “Before that, we worked in a tech start-up, but Jochen’s passion was timber,” says Belinda. After showcasing her artworks at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, Helen is now looking abroad for inspiration – hoping to undertake an overseas residency in 2020. “Residencies offer immersion and discovery of places – a valuable catalyst for work,” she says. Travels far and wide are sure to inspire future collections, all of which will invite collectors along for the journey – true to Helen’s philosophy: “Objects can connect us to worlds beyond our everyday existence.”

THE RIVER HOUSE ON A RIVER NORTH OF SYDNEY, ONE COUPLE CREATED A HOME THAT IS PERFECTLY IN TUNE WITH TIME AND TIDE Story DAVID SMIEDT Styling RACHEL PETERS Photography CHRIS WARNES

BUSHLAND BEAUTY Homeowners Belle and Simon are spoilt for choice in the NSW riverside abode they share with their

children Jensen, nine, Pepper, seven, and Ollie, three – there are views everywhere they look. Inspired by the works of architect Glenn Murcutt – renowned for his innovative use of metal – the pair, both industrial designers, renovated the home themselves. “We used as many recycled materials as we could,” says Belle (pictured top right, in the lounge with Ollie). Colorbond corrugated iron in Woodland Grey on the exterior (above) provides a perfect transition between the colour of the water and bushland. >

M

usically speaking, everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Billy Joel has been inspired by the transformative power of a river. Homeowners and industrial designers Belle and Simon were equally entranced by both the melody of the Hawkesbury and the “bit of a shack” they discovered on the river’s edge in 2004. The pair were originally based in Sydney, but a job on the Central Coast saw them searching for somewhere to live that was located between the two that would lessen the commute and provide access to nature. “After renting in the area for a while,” says Belle, “our neighbour told us about a property, which was 10 kilometres up the river and only accessible by water. It was more remote than what we were used to, but we decided to buy a boat and make it work.” What they bought was a far cry from the architectural beauty you see now – a home the couple enjoy with their three young children Jensen, Pepper and Ollie. “It was falling down and had white ant damage,” says Belle. “It had been neglected for years and needed TLC. We jumped in and started fixing things up here and there. It took six years because we did what we could, when we could.” A beautiful palette of greys, raw timber and calm whites combine with reclaimed and handcrafted pieces to imbue the home with a serene sense of place and history. Underpinning it all is an eco philosophy that stems from Simon’s work in off-grid solar systems. “We’re passionate about sustainable design,” says Belle, whose home features tank water, solar power, wet composting and a septic system. With river and bush views heavily in mind, the couple raised the roofline up front and lowered it in the back to bring ancient rock faces of the region within touching distance. A new studio at the back was also built to create extra accommodation and a chill-out/ work space. The home abounds in stunning custom pieces, which Belle casually describes with an “oh yeah, Simon made that too”, as if it were a DIY Allen key job from Ikea. The home is just the right side of minimal, with pieces chosen for their comfort and functionality as well as their silhouettes. But best of all, it has been lovingly created after years of watching the river beside which it sits. This means light is reflected off the water and into the space just so, and every window offers a ‘grab the camera’ moment. Although the home now functions as a weekender and holiday home as the family have since returned to Sydney, it is constantly evolving. “We’re forever changing things,” says Belle. “I don’t think a house is ever finished, is it?”

The kitchen (left & opposite) is dominated by one of Simon’s creations – a sleek island bench comprised of laminate cabinetry and a laser-cut, powder-coated metal top. “We wanted to create a contemporary kind of interior with clean lines, and that was one of Simon’s crazy thoughts that came out of that process,” says Belle. Custom cabinetry in chocolate brown acrylic echoes the reclaimed timber windows. Another one of Simon’s unique inventions is seen in the lasercut custom handles. DINING AREA

If this room looks familiar, there’s a good reason – Belle and Simon’s

exquisite dining room (above) was a finalist in our 50 Beautiful Rooms competition, revealed in the February 2019 issue. “My favourite item is the vintage map I sourced through the National Library of Australia,” says Belle. “I also love the bi-fold windows for bringing the outdoors in and the flyscreen on rollers that comes in very handy in summer.” Classic Thonet ‘No 18’ dinning chairs in Black surround a table that Simon fabricated by combining a white powder-coated base with a stained timber top. A pendant light made from a lobster pot from Lunatiques By The Lighting Guild and a pair of vintage water skis pay homage to the river. An Ikea ‘Lohals’ jute rug adds a more natural touch. >

LIVING ROOM

“When it’s a clear night and the moon’s out, you get this beautiful reflection on the water,” says Belle. “The more you can see of the water from inside the house the better, we thought.” So a wall of picture windows and Stegbar sliding doors in the living area (opposite) make the view a living artwork. “The whole house was designed to maximise views of the river and bush,” she adds. In the cosy conversation spot, a reclaimed wooden table from Stone Pony sits atop a ‘Lohals’ rug from Ikea, while a pair of vintage leather ‘Wassily’ chairs by Marcel Breuer create a focal point. The Temple & Webster ‘Bennett’ sofa features removable and washable covers – “crucial when you’ve got three kids running about,” says Belle. The dark grey floor tiles from Di Lorenzo provide a surface that reflects light from the windows. A series of four bookshelves in the living room (top right), each hung at different heights, breaks up the expanse of wall, while custom cabinets offers enough

storage below and clean lines up top – allowing for statement pieces including the ‘Inongo’ basket from Imprint House and also a striking blue print by Tamin Sahebzada (opposite) to shine. The Norseman fireplace, a gift from a neighbour, provides warmth in the wintertime. OUTDOOR AREA

The custom timber daybed with slatted sides on the deck (top left) – another of Simon’s pieces – pulls double duty as the location for serious discussions between Simon and Ollie, pictured, plus storage underneath for toys and cushions. The added downlight means it’s also the perfect spot for a bit of evening reading. Seek a similar downlight with the CLA ‘Fixed Up And Down’ wall pillar light from JD Lighting. DECK

The couple added a deck off the living area (right) that has become a popular spot for alfresco dining. For similar furniture, try the ‘Slimline’ timber outdoor table setting from Temple & Webster. >

GUEST BEDROOM

Walls painted in Dulux Whisper White create a fresh canvas for the homewares in white and grey tones in this bright and beautiful guest room (top left). The pair added repurposed timber-framed windows above the bed purchased from Sleeping Giant, which is topped with linen from Temple & Webster. To source a similar jute and cotton rug, try the ‘Bayeaux Beige Diamond’ rug from Miss Amara. Because there is no wardrobe in here, a timber rail on the wall – created by Belle – provides hanging space. The streamlined look is completed by an Ikea ‘Forsa’ lamp that has been affixed to the wall. BATHROOM

The light-filled bathroom (top right) features a monochrome scheme with custom cabinets in white and a rectangular basin – get the look with Parisi’s ‘Sense’ wall cabinet in White, together with the Caroma ‘Teo 2.0’ wash basin. Tiles are from Di Lorenzo and the windows are by Stegbar. STUDIO

and stool. “This is actually one of my favourite spaces in the house,” says Belle. “We get so spoiled with the water views, but looking at the bush is just as beautiful and this space has turned out to be the perfect space for that.” The elm stool is from Imprint House and the rug is from Piccolo Pear on the NSW Central Coast. The ‘Pink Salt’ print from Urban Road adds a subtle pop of colour, while the engineered floorboards from the ‘Formica’ range by Laminex provides a hint of Scandi style. MAIN BEDROOM

The powder-coated aluminium sliding doors – in a shade that complements the tree outside – open onto a deck that was added by Simon and Belle (opposite). When this sort of view is up for grabs, the pair wanted nothing to distract from it. “This really is the star of the room,” explains Belle. “The jacaranda is directly in front of the bedroom, so there’s quite a bit of privacy. We didn’t have curtains for a long time because it’s so private.” Bearing in mind years of little feet dashing to and fro, Belle and Simon chose a grey carpet from Carpet Court. Try Carpet Court’s ‘Wayfarer’ wool carpet in Augusta, for similar.

unusual upcycling

To create this repurposed floor lamp, the couple took their creativity to the next level. “Simon had this old stage light from the days when he worked in production,” says Belle. “Recycling and reusing is very important to us, so we searched for a way to incorporate it into the room. Eventually we happened upon an old surveyor’s tripod and the two objects melded perfectly.” For a range of similar vintage treasures, try lunatiques.com. >

THE JETTY When a property is

only accessible by boat, a jetty is mandatory. Here, the greyed out timber is accentuated with a bright white balustrade and an Adirondack chair from The Porch Furniture (below). The pilings were painted grey to reference the house. The hammock was intended as a sanctuary for Belle (pictured) during her first pregnancy, but has since become a firm favourite for the children. “The kids use the hammock more than I do now, she confirms.

Who lives here? Belle and Simon, both industrial designers; and their children, Jensen, nine, Pepper, seven, and Ollie, three. What do you love most about living here? Belle: “You really notice the change of seasons. You drive up from the city, park your car, jump in the boat and then all of a sudden you’re on the water with the sky above you. If it’s raining, you get a bit wet. If it’s windy, you feel the wind. You feel all of the weather, which is quite beautiful.” Best advice for renovators? “Living in it as we were renovating was a big advantage because we didn’t make any impulse decisions. We lived in the space, knew where the light came in and were able to live around the seasons to know how to best build it.” Any other aspects to the design you love? “We are very conscious of lighting, it’s incredibly important… we don’t like a lot of downlights.”

IN THE SWING Capturing the best of the Australian sun, homeowners Sabina and Andrew’s north-facing home in bayside Melbourne

does joyous justice to its leafy setting and blends modernity with original charm. “We found this seat in our garage after we bought the house and Andrew made it into this swing – Ingrid loves it,” says Sabina, of their little girl (pictured), who enjoys swinging beneath her “magic” peppercorn tree. The family hosts relaxed gatherings on the Victorian ash deck, where comfy Mimosa sofas from Bunnings make entertaining a breeze. The home’s airy hallway (opposite) is a study in timeless grace, with a ‘Marcel’ pendant from Beacon Lighting, a ‘Modern Black Circular’ mirror from The Block Shop and an Aldi hall table. >

LIVING ROOM

Soaring style comes to the home’s newly designed heart, thanks to cathedral ceilings painted – along with the walls, trims and exposed trusses – in Dulux Vivid White (below). “I wanted this area to look really spacious and airy, so the six-metre ceilings and trusses were the starting point of the design,” says Sabina, whose Ikea ‘Kivik’ sofa (below & opposite left) came from their previous home. A vase by H&M Home crowns the striking ‘Melvin’ reclaimed-elm coffee table from Interior Secrets.

VEGIE PATCH

Tucked away in the corner of the garden, the family’s beloved fruit and vegie patch (below) produces everything from strawberries and peaches to fragrant thyme. Most weekends, Ingrid and Andrew (pictured) “love spending time out here”, says Sabina. >

When Sabina and Andrew first walked through this early 20th-century home a couple of years back, they were instantly enamoured by its gracious period features – particularly the intricate ceiling roses, leadlight-panelled front door and exquisite arched hallway. “These heritage details were exactly what we wanted,” Sabina explains. Much less appealing for them was the home’s slapdash 1970s addition. “The extension contained the kitchen and laundry, but it was in such bad shape that it was actually on a slope,” the homeowner recalls. “It was demolished on the day after our permit came through – it just had to go. We decided to build a new extension for our kitchen and living area, ensuite and laundry, as well as restoring the original part of the home. The extension was completed in just three months.” Few renovations, however, go through without a hiccup, as the couple found during the stability works: “The re-stumping caused the floor and wall tiles in the original family bathroom to crack, so we ended up having to renovate that room, too, even though it wasn’t part of the plan.” Makeover complete, the family is now making the home and garden their own. In the yard, a majestic peppercorn tree casts a spell. “Ingrid calls it her ‘magic tree’, but we all love it,” says Sabina. Inside and out, this is a home once again in its prime.

ometimes in life, venturing beyond a comfort zone can lead to the most exciting results. Certainly, that rings true in the sunshine-filled home of interior decorator Sabina and husband Andrew. Nestled within lush greenery in the heart of one of Melbourne’s prettiest waterfront precincts, the reinvigorated Victorian home the couple share with their four-year-old daughter, Ingrid, is filled with a timeless sense of tranquility. Yet it is also a lesson in the power of contrast, as a typically pared-back Scandi palette acts as a foil to highlight accents of black and gold, while the bedrooms are alive with colour. “I definitely haven’t regretted it,” says Sabina, of the less subdued design risks she took. “There is a little bit of luxe in the house, but I love that it adds some shine to what is otherwise a very neutral look.” Nevertheless, Sabina, who originally hails from a small fishing village in Sweden, always knew she would draw predominantly on her heritage for inspiration. “I think that my background can be seen in all of the work that I do, including this house,” she explains. “Even when I try to steer away from it, it comes through, because it’s such a part of me... I grew up in a very traditional Swedish villa with a lot of light colours and light flooring, and so it’s a style that’s definitely in my blood.”

The ‘Nordic Light’ candleholder from Design House Stockholm, which takes pride of place on the table, also taps into the homeowner’s heritage. “It’s a big Swedish favourite,” says Sabina of the design icon. Along the bench, wooden stools from Oz Sale offer additional spots to perch.

MAIN BEDROOM

Sabina admits to feeling a little trepidation when opting to paint the walls of her bedroom (opposite) with a misty cobalt – Signature by Dulux. “I really wanted a darker bedroom that felt ready for rest,” she says of the decision she is now delighted she made. The Emily bedhead in French Beige from Brosa raises the style quota while the frayed-edge linen quilt cover from Temple & Webster and the cushions from Ikea and TK Maxx take the moodiness up a notch. Sabina sourced the room’s delicate ‘Aksel 1’ pendant lights from Beacon Lighting and the Hertz bedside tables were found at Brosa. ENSUITE

Sabina and Andrew’s bedroom connects to a five-star ensuite (top left), where the magic of monochrome makes a dramatic style statement (it was a finalist this year in our Beautiful Rooms competition). Graphic ‘Majorca Stripe’ tiles from Beaumont Tiles encase the floor, while the inky Prisma pendant light picked up

at Temple & Webster, and the Kmart towel rail, look right at home. The freestanding Lucini bath from Highgrove Bathrooms beckons. “I wish the bath got more use than it does,” laughs Sabina. “But at least it’s here if I ever have time for one.” INGRID’S ROOM

“Ingrid really wanted a pink bedroom, and this is a beautiful shade,” explains Sabina of the Dulux Slightly Rose paint used on the walls of the room adored by her daughter. “It’s just a very soft pink with a dusty grey undertone.” Hanging on the wall right above the mantel (top right), which is painted in Dulux Vivid White, a framed ‘True Unicorns’ art print by Majvillan has found a delightful home. In the sleep corner (right), Sabina’s “bargain” Ebay-sourced canopy makes a perfect finishing touch for Ingrid’s ‘Minnen’ bed from Ikea. In the living room and library corner (opposite), where in cooler months the stone-clad fireplace draws the family – including husband Sean and the couple’s adult children Briahna and Maclean – cloudy hues and soft textiles in complementary tones create a serene atmosphere. “I particularly love the green-greys rather than the blue-greys because they go with so many things, while also giving a bit of warmth and elegance,” says Dita, who chose Resene Pravda for the walls. or interior designer and self-confessed serial renovator Dita, the utter joy of creating another dream abode always outweighs the heartache of uprooting and moving. And for the past two decades, reviving and reinventing each of her family’s homes has come with one non-negotiable: the accommodation of an enormous piece of impressionist art. Even if it means moving entire walls or ceilings to do so. “It’s a very large painting – more than 300 by 250 centimetres – in the style of [French artist] Gauguin, and it drives everyone else in the family insane,” laughs the owner of Dita Nicholls Interiors. “In this house, we had to push a couple of exposed beams up into the ceiling to create extra height and allow the painting to fit on the wall.” Spotted “covered in dust” towards the back of a furniture warehouse, the colossal work by an unknown artist may have been bought for a song, “but my husband, Sean, now jokes that it’s cost us more than anything in the house!” she says. Happily, there’s a lot to love in every room of Dita’s most recent passion project on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Sophisticated and stately, and swathed in luxe finishes, this is an elegant yet relaxed home. Open to the lush outdoors and filled with light, the sprawling abode pays homage to the designer’s signature love of texture and moody greys. (Her previous home was featured in Home Beautiful in April 2017.) But, while white is notably absent from the walls, it makes its crisp presence felt on the ceilings, trims and architraves. “When we bought the house four years ago, it was looking a little tired, but I could see that it had good bones and that it had been very much loved,” says Dita. “I’ve always enjoyed taking something a little neglected and getting it back to the best I feel it can be.” Smitten by the home’s immense potential – not to mention its 220-metres-from-the-sea location – she set about planning her sympathetic but contemporary renovation. “We changed the layout slightly to suit our family and reconfigured an upstairs TV room into an attic bedroom for our daughter Briahna,” she explains. “We added new bathrooms and a new kitchen, a new colour scheme and flooring, as well as texture through elements such as wall panelling.” Beautifully decorated, the home has been designed, above all, to accommodate relaxed, year-round entertaining. “The house is a little bit Hamptons and a little bit coastal,” says Dita. “But regardless of the style, and whether I’m working for a client or myself, I like a home to feel warm and comfortable. Most of all, I just love people to walk into their home and say, ‘This is me’.” Meanwhile, for this ever-on-the-move family, the time has already come to embark on the next chapter in their home-renovating lives. And there’s one thing that is absolutely certain – a rather striking, oversized painting will be making the journey with them.

DINING High glamour comes to the dining zone

courtesy of a statement ‘Prescot’ chandelier from Emac & Lawton and, of course, that scene-stealing Gauguin-style artwork (below). “It’s lovely to have a separate dining area like this, but one that’s also very close to the kitchen,” says Dita, who selected the ‘Nina’ dining chairs from Asian Tide. >

Here, on the other hand, “the winters are particularly amazing,” notes Charlie, “though the summers do necessitate access to airconditioning or a pool!” Fittingly, he cites the pool zone as his favourite area in the home. “Whether swimming or just sitting and relaxing, it’s the perfect spot,” he says. Craving a lifestyle change, the Englishman moved to Australia a decade ago, eventually settling on the riverside location for its proximity to a well-known cafe p r e c i n c t . Wi t h t h e perfect block secured, down went the existing tired old dwelling and, in its place, rose Charlie’s vision of a grey-andwhite home bathed in light and full of touches of that iconic East Coast style, in a uniquely Australia way. “We stripped it back for a more relaxed feel,” he says of the sophisticated style. Designed and built by local company Evermore Designed Homes, the property lives up to Charlie’s main directive from his brief – for the living areas to connect to the backyard. The fall of the block allowed for a ‘step down’ living room and higher ceilings at the rear of the home. Full-width sliding doors in the living room and windows that drop to the floor in the dining room make the most of the voluminous space, and encourage indoor-outdoor living.

As much as he’s enjoying his year-round outdoors lifestyle, Charlie hasn’t left behind every aspect of his English heritage. One concession was the inclusion of a large ‘Victoria’ Smeg, which reminds him of the Aga that warmed the kitchen of his childhood. In keeping with the traditional style of the cooker, an old-school recess was designed complete with ornate corbels, panelled cabinetry and subway tiling. The attention to detail continues in the living areas, which feature New South Wales spotted gum floors, and on the patio and internal wet areas, where silver travertine lends an easy elegance. “Being as you’re often barefoot, it was nice to include more tactile materials,” says Charlie, whose home’s laid-back ambience is reflected in its neutral colour palette starring Porter’s Paints Wood Smoke throughout, contrasted with fresh white trims. A deeper grey, Dulux Stepney, was selected for the exterior walls, with Colorbond Surf Mist for the roof and garage door. Architectural details include criss-cross balustrades, weatherboard cladding and multi-pane French doors. Measuring 13 metres, the width of the block is spacious for the area, which allowed the front door to be flanked by sidelights, for a commanding first impression. Just a short block from that buzzing cafe strip, along with the water, the property’s location is ideal for Charlie, who works from home in his poolside office. “It’s a quick commute to the city if needed and a short walk home from the pub,” he says, with a smile. And, while his own property might be one that turns heads, this homeowner is just as enamoured with his surrounds. “Living by the river also means you get some pretty decent views when jogging,” he says.

WARM WELCOME Charlie and labrador Molly in front of their much-commented-on front door in Brisbane (pictured). “Whenever we post a pic of this

entry, it goes crazy,” says Melanie Fracchia of Evermore Designed Homes, who designed and built his Hamptons-inspired home with high-impact street appeal. “We’re often asked what the colours are. The answer? Walls in Dulux Stepney and the front door is simply Dulux Black in a high-gloss finish.”

Stylishly anchored by a timber pedestal table and ‘St Tropez’ wicker chairs picked up from Rococo Design (opposite), the ample and shaded back patio is an idyllic transitional space between the home and Charlie’s home office. Silver travertine from Edge Tile + Stone adds a touch of luxury underfoot. For uniformity, its use is continued in wet areas through the home. ‘Coco’ cushions and a ‘Poolside’ towel from Escape To Paradise add to the holiday vibe.

Silver travertine, arranged in a French pattern, was selected over white porcelain tiles to add natural warmth to the wet areas in the luxurious guest bathroom (top right). The bench tops are Caesarstone Sleek Concrete, with ‘Florencia European Pewter’ pulls and knobs from Momo Handles and Phoenix lever taps. INSIDE STORY CHARLIE’S HOME

Who lives here? Charlie, a business owner; and his labrador, Molly. Favourite spot in the house? Charlie: “Definitely the pool area. Whether outside in the area itself or looking out onto it from the dining room.” Do you prefer cooking or eating out? “With so many great eateries in walking distance, I generally end up eating at the local pub with a mate.” Best thing about working from home? “My only commute is the few steps it takes to get from the house to the office.” Was the building process smooth? “It was – and it was extremely convenient in the sense I used a local builder and their office is only about 200 metres from my front door!”

mbarking on a new build can be a stressful prospect, but homeowners Clare and James were so comfortable with the year-long process, they even found time to get married in the midst of it. Another plus? The friendships they forged with so many of the contractors they used. “We are so lucky, we worked with so many incredible people to make our home happen,” says Clare, sharing how landscaper Tone Alexander “arrived on our first night with champagne and a chocolate cake”. She adds with a smile, “Isn’t that amazing?” The same could be said of their home. Set above the turquoise waters of the south Atlantic, it “embraces mountain and sea”, says Clare, who shared her husband’s dream to move from fast-paced Johannesburg to semi-rural Noordhoek, on the outskirts of Cape Town. “Since he’s crazy about the sea and riding his bike on the hilly mountainside roads, it made sense,” she explains. The couple’s brief to architect WP Bosch & Associates focused on honouring the stunning surrounds. “We knew the site was really special – there was this crazy overgrown garden with rusted wheelbarrows,” she recalls. Clare’s heart was set on a farmhouse feel for their new home, while James favoured a modern aesthetic – and the result is a breathtaking blend of both styles. The crunchy stone driveway, slate-coloured tin roof and magnificent external masonry retain an old-school sensibility, while the double-volume steel windows and monochrome palette of raw and polished cement, exposed brick, tempered steel and natural textures, feel thoroughly modern. Inside, the passionate entertainers now plate up in a kitchen that’s the hero of their home. “We wanted something really special that was a bit of a showpiece without being too over the top,” says Clare. Their keen eye for beauty aside, comfort was also integral to the couple’s vision. The informal living area features a huge low-slung sofa, an ideal spot for enjoying marathon television sessions. “We are sports fanatics and love watching big matches or tournaments together,” reveals Clare. The living space flows onto an outside patio that sets the scene for chilled-out afternoons by the pool during the summer months. Downstairs is all about work and play (a wine cellar and glassed-in office were essentials), while upstairs encourages relaxation, from the views of the ocean and the soft jute carpeting underfoot, to an oversized main bedroom and matching monochrome bathroom, where a sleek black bath invites indulgence. It’s no wonder the pair loves spending time together at home, where the focus is on laid-back living – and a steady stream of house guests testify to its appeal. “We love having people to stay,” enthuses Clare, who’s relishing newlywed life in their dream home by the sea. “Despite all of our constant ideas and us being on site just about every day, [architects] WP Bosch kept encouraging us to rein it in and to stick with our earliest thoughts of what we wanted, and it worked,” she says. “We feel it’s a perfect balance of style and comfort and we honestly couldn’t be happier here.”

LAUNDRY

DINING ROOM “We love entertaining and ‘drinks’ often ends up

being dinner for 10 people,” explains Clare, whose rustic dining table (top right, seek similar from Stone Pony) has accommodated many an impromptu social gathering. “We’re not fussy – if there aren’t enough chairs, we’ll pull up a stool for someone to sit on; so long as people are comfortable and are enjoying themselves, we’re happy.” >

A mostly monochrome palette soothes the senses in the couple’s bathroom (opposite) – a serene sanctuary enhanced by pops of greenery. The theme continues in the custom wallpaper by Cara Saven, as reflected in the duo of mirrors sourced from Weylandts. Minimalist sinks, an oak counter and the custom-built cabinetry contribute to the zone’s spa-like ambience, while the sleek black hardware and subway floor tiles laid in a herringbone pattern are classic yet contemporary details.

A custom-built timber staircase leads to the main suite and two guest bedrooms. Clare insisted on jute carpets to counter the space’s industrial edge. She says the exposed brick wall (top right) evolved serendipitously after she and James loved the look of bricks prepped ahead of painting.

CLARE & JAMES’ HOME

Who lives here? Clare and James, a financial director. Why demolish and start fresh? Clare: “When we first saw this house it was pretty darn ugly … WP Bosch brought our needs and wants together beautifully with their design.” Any surprises in the process? “When we were finishing the house we realised the bedroom was absolutely enormous, but [landscaper] Tone came to the rescue – he had found the most beautiful black marble table at Weylandts and took us to see it. We loved it!” A favourite feature in your home? “Exposed brick. The builders were getting ready to plaster it and paint it and gave it the initial prep … and we loved the look, so it stayed.” How do you bring the outside in? “Using greenery from the garden. I absolutely love having plants around us.”

Make this winter your cosiest one ever with our expert tips to getting snug: it’s as simple as soft carpet underfoot, a few extra winter layers (the good kind), textures that invite touch and the warmth of atmospheric lighting.

Always dreamed of soft carpet underfoot? Autumn and winter are the perfect seasons to take the plunge. “For an on-trend, textured look, you can’t go past a wool loop, like Carpet Court’s Natural Formations range,” says interior designer Darren Palmer.

EMBRACE WARMING LAYERS

“Start with a few extra elements and build from there,” says interior designer Shilpa Mohan, who recommends beginning with a jute rug beside the bed, layered cushions and a chunky woollen throw over linen sheets. “Then, add timber bedside tables, lamps and artworks.”

bring Adding a in mix texture of textured wares (right) is a fail-safe way to create instant warmth in a room, says interior designer Shilpa. “Texture is how something feels – not just with your fingers but also your eyes,” she explains. The key to getting it just right is to decorate a room with objects, materials, fabrics or colours that are varied, but still all work together cohesively. “Think soft carpet between your toes, lots of layers of bedlinen in different fabrics, chunky throws and tactile rugs,” she says.

BOOST YOUR LIGHTING

Natural light is at a premium in winter so, to remedy this, direct your light fixtures toward the ceiling and walls. “This will make the light bounce around the room,” says product specialist Denise Hammond of Beacon Lighting. A bedside reading lamp, as in this bedroom by Alexandra Kidd Design (left), is also a must-have for evenings spent curled up with a good book.

care forbestyour mattress It’s always to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on whether you need to flip or rotate your mattress, but if there’s no guidance and your mattress style allows for it, a good rule of thumb is to flip every season. “The correct way to flip a mattress is to rotate the mattress 180 degrees and then flip it,” says interior designer Shilpa Mohan. “This way every part of the mattress is in a different place and the pressure evens out, which increases its life.”

uch more than just a functional design element, a staircase has the potential to make the journey between the floors of a home an experience in itself. Yet with so many elements to consider, from the shape and style to myriad material combinations, planning the perfect flight of stairs can seem overwhelming. To simplify the process, we’ve rounded up expert advice on the most popular designs and how to make them work for you. Onwards and upwards! >

STRAIGHT STAIRCASE

THE STRAIGHT STAIRCASE A straight flight of stairs has clean, simple lines and can be a cost-effective option (left), says designer Alix Helps of Alix Helps Interiors. Look to a hardy steel balustrade for an industrial look, just like this one from Studio Atelier, or glass for a sense of space. This design has the bonus of being multifunctional – the void beneath can be used for storage or a study nook – but with no landing, a key safety consideration is the potential number of stairs. “This may be a deterrent for young families,” says Alix.

SPLIT STAIRCASE

THE SPLIT STAIRCASE If you have plenty of space and want a break between flights, consider a staircase with a landing (right). “Split staircases are generally more popular than winders (below) – people consider them safer, especially with closed risers, and they suit a minimalist scheme,” explains director Ian Crosher of Signature Stairs. For ease of cleaning, try closed risers for low, short flights and open risers for longer upper flights.

WINDER STAIRCASE

THE WINDER STAIRCASE Often associated with a more traditional look, a winder staircase incorporates a 90-degree turn with an L-shaped footprint, but no landing, says designer Alexandra Kidd of Alexandra Kidd Design. “A single winder often has 12 to 13 steps with several angled stairs that create the change of direction,” she says. This can make a grand statement in a larger home, however, as winder steps are narrower on one side, they can be a bit tricky to traverse. “In terrace homes, you may want to consider a double winder (left) where the stair turns twice at 90 degrees, making it more compact,” advises Alexandra.

A spiral design is ideal when space is limited (right). “The major difference between a curved and spiral staircase is the central post around which a tight spiral staircase is constructed,” explains senior sales consultant Joel Potter of S&A Stairs. “This gives it a dramatic profile, plus the potential to fit in spaces where a conventional staircase won’t, such as in a corner to provide access to a mezzanine or loft.” The main drawback is ease of use: “The compact radius can make the stairs feel steeper and the small, tapered treads aren’t the easiest to walk on, so they’re not ideal for young children or people with mobility issues,” explains Joel.

TREAD LIGHTLY Stairs must meet a P3 or R10 nonslip rating. This is achieved using an approved stair polish, certified nosing strips or, for greater safety, aluminium strips routered into the treads.

RISE & FALL A riser, which is the height of each step, cannot exceed 190mm (barring spiral staircases). Australian regulations stipulate no more than 18 risers in a single flight between landings.

HANDLE WITH CARE The minimum height for handrails on stairs is 865mm, while the railing on a flat area over a void needs to be at least 1m, though experts advise exceeding both heights.

While you won’t be able to address all of the three layers of lighting in your kitchen – general, task and decorative – you can upgrade the style and function on this budget. “Adding or replacing pendants above an island or bench is a good place to start,” says design services manager Amy Harper-Pell of Special Lights. “It will give your kitchen a distinct lift, update the look and, depending on the light you choose, supply extra task lighting.” She suggests opting for something minimal and sleek, such as glass. “Continue the theme throughout the rest of your home to link your spaces,” adds Amy.

$

In the same way a leopard-print heel will jazz up a little black dress, new accessories can revitalise your kitchen. Think pastel canisters, fresh tea towels or a new bread bin – but not at once. “One beautiful bowl on a bench looks better than lots of clutter,” advises director Fiona Austin of Austin Design. “A narrow shelf displaying a plant and a few handmade ceramic pieces makes a visible difference. A nice calendar or a framed vintage poster with a cooking theme can look lovely.”

Replacing or refreshing your splashback offers high impact at a lower cost. National kitchens buyer Simon Warmington of Bunnings, recommends Bellessi’s high-gloss Polymer panels for an easy, stunning DIY solution. “It’s lightweight, cost-effective and easy to cut to size and install on site,” he says of the panels that come in 4600 Dulux colours, as well as a range of graphic prints. Or, revive a tiled splashback with a fresh lick of tile paint designed for glass, porcelain and ceramic tiles.

‘It’s what’s on the inside that counts’ applies to kitchens: modern cooking zones now include integrated inserts for everything from spices to stick blenders. If your kitchen was made before the inside became as sexy as outside, it’s not too late to boost its efficiency. “You can easily improve functionality by adding internal storage solutions, such as cutlery or condiment inserts, wire ware and pull-out baskets,” says Lisa Mayski of Kaboodle Kitchen. “This creates a clutter-free space, while keeping everyday items within easy reach.” >

Painting a wall or nook is a great way to change the mood of your kitchen, create a new focus and bring it up to date. “I’m not a fan of colourful cabinetry, but if a client wants to introduce colour into their kitchen, I’ll often suggest painting a plaster wall – which is much easier to change,” says Fiona Austin of Austin Design. Choose a colour or finishes for a subtle lift, or make a statement (we love a crisp navy-white, right).

“Small appliances, such as kettles and toasters, have become the fashion statement of today’s kitchens,” explains Leanne. “Colour co-ordinated appliances with retro-inspired shapes are very popular.” To add a touch of luxury to your tea and toast, look out for the Russell Hobbs ‘Brooklyn’ kettle and matching four-slice toaster with copper accents (both $99). For fashion-forward essentials, try Morphy Richards range with faux cork trims (Cork 1.5L kettle, $159, Cork four-slice toaster, $169). All available from Harvey Norman.

“Introducing a rug is a great, low-cost way to add colour, texture and comfort to your kitchen,” explains the founder Leanne Smeallie of Ampersand Interiors. “Coloured and patterned rugs liven up a bland space and make it easy to incorporate new trends.” And for the best spots to place your rug, “try a runner between cabinets and an island, or a smaller rug in front of the sink,” suggests Leanne. To avoid slipping, choose a low-pile rug and consider using a non-slip underlay.

Switch up small accessories such as knobs and handles for instant effect. “Whether you’re after a classic, provincial or modern look, swapping hardware on your cabinetry makes a big difference visually and brings new life to your kitchen,” says Lisa Mayski of Kaboodle Kitchen. Hardware buyer Nathan Monk of Bunnings agrees: “To create a consistent look and feel in the space, choose hardware from the same family,” he says, suggesting matt black handles for a more modern style, or brass for an industrial look.

Replacing tired tapware with a magnificent mixer is a sure-fire way to elevate your kitchen. “Beautiful mixers with pull-out sprays are on most people’s wish lists these days,” says Fiona.“If you’re trying to give your existing kitchen an update, a black tap is a nice addition. It creates a feature, makes your kitchen more interesting and I find black works with a lot of different styles.” This year, pewter and gunmetal are hot (and cold!) options.

TUSCAN INSPIRATION, CREATIVE WALLS AND RAW APPEAL: THE BEST IDEAS FROM THIS YEAR’S MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW Story TAMMY HUYNH Photography SIMON GRIFFITHS

JUNE 2019

R

olling Tuscan hills and the rustic villas that sit within their curves are a long way from Melbourne. But visitors at the city’s International Flower & Garden Show this year could have been forgiven for thinking otherwise. Inspired by the romance of the Mediterranean and the beautiful arches that frame inside-out views of the Italian landscape, Nigel Parker, Janis Fischer and Sally Ritter of Tract created the award-winning garden ‘The Loggia’ (above and right), which is a lesson in modern-day practicality and creativity. This stunning garden is an interpretation of the Mediterranean countryside, says Janis Fischer, Tract’s senior principal landscape architect, with “elements deconstructed, redefined and hybridised to form a compact garden for urban Melbourne,” explains Janis. “Paramount among these elements is the loggia – an external, covered walkway – that forms the focal backdrop for the garden and gives the space its name.” And with the warmth of terracotta surfaces, a cascading water feature, and mix of Australian natives and exotic plants, the garden is a bold but intimate and inviting space. Here’s how to bring the design ideas from this garden home:

consider nature While creating beauty, it’s important to be

practical too. “Although it’s a small space, the garden provides an idealised habitat for pollinators such as bees,” says Janis. “It goes to show how a diverse palette of plants, including productive and pollinator plants, can thrive in an urban courtyard.” frame the zone Consider how hardscape elements can create windows into parts of the garden, act as a backdrop and how they work with the planting palette. “The walls of ‘The Loggia’ provide a level of structure and comfort to the garden, and frame views,” explains Nigel Parker. “The black steel modernises the arches and provides contrast.” plant for the future Be mindful of the current environment when planting to future-proof your garden, says Sally Ritter. “A clever coalescence of Australian natives and attractive Mediterranean species will thrive and endure these hot climates,” she advises.

BOTANIC BEAUTY “Don’t underestimate how well greenery can lift a room,” says Wendy. “Indoor plants are a great way to decorate and bring life into your interiors. Nature goes with everything, so it doesn’t matter what your colour scheme is. Plants always work.”

“Green and velvet are the perfect pair – and while green velvet sofas are en vogue, cushions are a great way to introduce that glamour without going to any great expense,” says Wendy. Try the velvet cushions from L&M Home (below) to add easy elegance to your space.

A statement chair is a stylish tool for introducing personality to your living space or bedroom, and this one (above) “is absolutely on my wish list,” says Wendy. “The moss colour is such a beautiful shade, and the marriage of textures with a leather exterior and the felt interior is stunning – it just welcomes you.”

‘Mona’ trio of vases in Forest, $68, L&M Home.

OBJET D’ART “I just love the depth of these vases – they are such a deep tone that it really becomes a neutral and a great alternative to black. Odd numbers always work so the trio is ideal, and with three different sizes, it doesn’t feel too uniform. Pair these with a touch of metallic, such as a brass candlestick or photo frame, to counter the matt finish and complete your display.”

wonder wall

“This is one of my favourite images because I just want to get lost in that forest – it’s a great example of how a simple room can be completely transformed by an element of nature. Without the wallpaper, it’s a nicely dressed bed – but the mural brings the whole thing alive.”

light play

“The trick to using green on the wall is to introduce texture,” advises Wendy. “It starts to remind you of vines or leaves – and it teams perfectly with natural finishes such as timber and rattan.” This is seen in the ‘George’ dining chair from Wood Tailors Club (right).

‘Into The Woodlands’ mural, $44/sqm, Murals Wallpaper.

BOTTLED UP “I love glass-bottle green,” says Wendy. “It’s the translucence of the colour that brings it to life, and the glaze of this dinnerware from Sthal Ceramics [available at Casa E Cucina] is quite heavy and reflective, so it’s a beautiful way of imitating that shade. The pattern is actually intrinsic to the piece, so it’s not painted on or introducing new colours – it’s all about the green hue.”

ARTWORK ‘DELPHINE’ URBAN ROAD

ronting up for the new season of House Rules, which airs on Channel Seven, the teams had to pull off a warehouse-style revamp at the innerSydney site that doubles as this year’s ‘home base’. And they certainly rose to the challenge. “It was the best beginning of any of the show’s seven seasons,” declares judge Wendy Moore, praising the teams’ sense of design and willingness to take risks with colour. They nailed the warehouse look, celebrating the heritage of the industrial structure and making “hunky, chunky use of these spaces,” adds judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. “Every surface has been worn by use,” he says. “It’s about celebrating the generations who have worked there.” >

Paying homage to the original features is the key element of this warehouse look, says judge Jamie Durie. “By putting a matt white paint over the blue, they were playing with the shadows of the brickwork, rather than the colour,” he notes of the space (above), where the ‘Antares’ artwork from Urban Road picks up the sky tones of the wall. “It’s really about embracing the texture of those old bricks. That was their way of sharing the warehouse with us.”

THE TAKE-OUT

Large rooms require extra attention to furniture choice and placement, advises Jamie. The two oversized sofas (‘Eva’ two-seater and ‘London’ XL sofa in Rustica Buff Leather, below, both from Johnny’s Furniture) delineate the living and dining spaces, while the choice of emerald velvet upholstery adds a layer of softness to an otherwise austere space.

‘Lines’ in Blue, Annandale Wallpapers.

Old complements new in this space, with judge Wendy calling the wallpaper the ‘jewel’ of the dining room (above). The ‘Nixon’ dining table and velvet ‘Queenie’ chairs, both by Matt Blatt, add a regal touch to the practical zone. A trio of circular mirrors soften any hard edges, says Jamie, while allowing light to bounce around the room.

Small and cosy corners create warmth and intimacy in larger spaces (below). Here, ‘Taurus’ leather chairs from Future Classics and Early Settler’s ‘Fulham’ shelves add warmth. >

Designed for a teen girl, this room challenges the stereotypes of warehouse style by combining a pastel palette with rough-and-ready textural elements, such as a partly exposed brick wall (below). The juxtaposition won over the judges. “This was my little sweet spot,” says judge Laurence of the striking space anchored by the ‘Zander’ bed frame from Bedshed, dressed in linen by Canningvale. An art print sourced from Urban Road, ‘Candy Frame’, turns up the volume.

Judge Jamie credits this room’s success to the ‘grounding’ effect of the ‘Safari’ rug from Koskela (right). “Without the black rug it would have been too much pink and too much colour, too kind of ‘cotton candy’,” he says. “It adds seriousness to the palette.”

The carefully crafted niches above the bed (below) were popular with all three judges. According to Wendy, they helped to bring a sense of balance into the room despite not being symmetrical. “It was an instinctual way of balancing out an area,” she says. “Had they made it symmetrical, it would have looked quite strange.” Industrial elements (bottom) were introduced into the bedroom space as both a decorative and functional tool, with piping acting as a beam to hang clothes on.

In this grown-ups’ bedroom (above), the queen-sized bed from Bedshed – with soft linen from Canningvale and the ‘Serpentine’ print from Urban Road hung above – creates a cosy and calm focal point. “I love the timber backdrop that ran from floor to ceiling in vertical slats,” says Jamie. n indulgent sanctuary in a spacious family home on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, this ensuite was part of a total rebuild. Leaving only the foundations intact, the as-new three-level home was designed to accommodate a growing family. The brief from owners Kate and Anthony to Alexandra Kidd Design was to create a home with mid-century and South Beach, Florida, influences, while making it a very ‘Sydney’ abode at the same time. Designer duo Alexandra Kidd and Jessica Sorlin worked with Kate to deliver a subtly elegant home featuring quirky touches that reflected the owners’ personal style. Kate wanted to include lots of ebony, gold and bamboo imagery throughout the house, evoking a 1920s aesthetic. “If you look at all that stuff from the 1920s, it’s never really gone out of style,” says the homeowner, who loves the enduring charm of bamboo in particular. “It’s a regency kind of look and I think it’s beautiful.” On the top floor of the home, the ensuite takes advantage of its harbour views while maintaining privacy. A palette of pale grey Carrara marble and duck-egg blue curtains, offset with a dark brown – almost black – vanity has created a serene space. Tucked away off the main bedroom, it is everything that Kate and her husband dreamed of. “We’re really thrilled with it,” she says. “It’s stunning, but it’s also very calm.” The only downside? The whole family – including kids Arabella, 13, Ben, 12, and Daisy, nine – loves it just as much as Kate and Anthony do. “Even though they’ve all got their own bathrooms, they like our bathtub for some inexplicable reason,” says Kate, “so it does get used a lot.”

The look and style of the ensuite began with these ‘Marquinia’ honed basketweave mosaic tiles (right) with Carrara in Nero, $30/305mm x 305mm sheet, from Di Lorenzo Tiles, says homeowner Kate. “They looked a bit bamboo-y to me, so I loved that,” she says. “I asked if they would work with the classic grey marble, and Alex’s team said ‘absolutely’.”

In her quest for perfection, owner Kate says she made a costly mistake when the marble tiles were being laid. The differences in the veins worried her and she had the builder remove five tiles to try and match them. “But what I realised is that with marble, it doesn’t have to match, because every piece is so different,” she says. “I can’t imagine the time and money I wasted.”

The ensuite has a view out to Middle Harbour, which was marred by a neighbouring duplex. Designer Jessica Sorlin solved the problem with soft S-track drapes made by Marlow & Finch with fabric from Unique Fabrics’ Allure collection in Eau De Nil, a match to drapes in the main bedroom. “They screen the duplex beautifully, by bunching in exactly the right spot,” says homeowner Kate. “But they also allow us to see the beautiful view.”

That one was decorated in a Hamptons style, reflecting the time the family had spent in the US, but Kate was after something new this time around. “I didn’t want that look again, but I really like a classic marble bathroom,” she explains of the Carrara 610mm x 305mm tiles from Ela Stone Gallery she chose to lend glamour to the floor and walls (left). “So I took the element I liked and redid it in a different way.”

HOLIDAY PACKAGE Kim and Eugene’s master ensuite is the star of a renovation that turned an investment property into a well-loved weekender Words Lynne Testoni

* Styling Sally Paterson * Photography Simon Whitbread

STAND-OUT STYLE

feature tiles A wall of stunning ‘Pennelli ‘Fusion’ Italian tiles in Blue India from Di Lorenzo Tiles, sets the tone of the bathroom. The layout of tiles required a lot of consideration, says interior designer Alix Helps. “There are four different designs and by laying them one way or the other, you can create either more or less intensity,” she explains.

bath & shower Homeowner Kim was definite in her desire for a separate bath and shower, despite limited space. Alix solved the issue with an open shower (above) and wet area next to the Kado ‘Lussi’ 1700mm bath with its ‘Scala’ floor-mounted spout, both from Reece.

S

ometimes our heart rules our head when it comes to our homes. This was certainly the case for Kim and Eugene and their holiday house on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, originally bought as an investment property. The couple had planned to rent out the house for a few years, with an eye towards moving there when they retired, but after completing an extensive renovation, they decided the home was just “too beautiful”, according to Kim, and they didn’t want to wait. It’s now the family’s weekender instead. “Although we bought it as an investment, when Eugene said, ‘What if we die before we ever move there?’ we decided to move in,” says Kim. “We’re loving it… we love it so much. We go up almost every weekend, even if it’s just for one night.” Working with their interior designer Alix Helps, the couple reworked the floor plan, updating the kitchen and bathrooms to make it a relaxed, yet luxurious holiday home. Capitalising on an ocean view, this bathroom is Kim’s favourite part of the house, she says. “Kim was looking for a relaxing, coastal retreat, but her style actually was quite Mediterranean,” explains Alix. “She really wanted a luxury hotel vibe with beautifully appointed bathrooms and kitchen. She loves blue – the ocean is literally just there, on the other side of the window.” Indeed, the biggest challenge, says Alix, was to give Kim enough space and the ability to see the ocean from the bath. “I actually stole a little bit of space from the adjoining walkthrough robe just to give us that little bit more area,” she says. Kim is delighted with the result. “The bathroom is stunning,” says the homeowner. “There isn’t anything I’d change.”

vanity Kim loves the timber look of the Rifco ‘Acqua’ vanity with Laminex Impressions front in Rural Oak (with a 20mm Caesarstone top in Snow), from Reece, which adds softness and warmth to all the hard surfaces. “It feels quite beachy,” she says. A Kado ‘Lussi’ vessel basin (above), also from Reece, echoes the tub’s curves. >

tiles The Bisazza ‘Smalto’ mosaics in Teal from Academy Tiles lend a beautiful glow to the bathroom. “Homeowner Kate and I workshopped a number of different colours before we eventually narrowed it down to blues and greens, and then the kids decided which one they particularly liked,” says interior designer Corinna Musgrave. “I knew whichever colour they chose would work in with the slate grey flooring [‘Grey Flow’ tiles, also from Academy Tiles] beautifully.”

{ LE SS ON LEARNED }

Collaboration with all the people who will use the space is key. “Encouraging the principal users of a bathroom to take an active interest in the design process has been just fabulous,” says interior designer Corinna. “The sense of ownership and pride they take in their space is really satisfying.”

bath An ‘Ort MK2’ back-to-wall freestanding bath from Bathware Direct, paired up with a Methven Surface mixer (above), was the perfect fit for this bath-loving clan. “It’s great having a bath that is deep enough to fit in comfortably,” explains Kate. A long wall niche provides plenty of storage and display space.

A

vibrant floor-to-ceiling mosaic wall is a striking focal point in homeowner Kate’s family bathroom in Melbourne’s south-east. The bold tile colour was chosen – from a curated selection – by her teenage son. Kate, who prefers a more “conservative” colour palette, says it wasn’t a colour she would necessarily have picked, but agrees it works really well. “It’s a pleasure to walk past and have all that life come from that wall,” she explains. “It’s a really lovely space.” The idea to include her children – her 17-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter share the bathroom – in the decision-making process came via interior designer Corinna Musgrave of Hunter & Ivy. “The point Corinna made is that it’s the kids’ bathroom, and allowing them to take part gives them ownership of it,” says Kate. The family had outgrown their existing bathroom and so, with two teenagers who required additional space, the room was given a vibrant new lease of life. “This particular family really loves a bath, so on their wish list was to make it a far more user-friendly place,” says Corinna, who rejigged the layout to make the bathtub the hero of the room. Also on the wish list were areas each child could call their own. “And I wanted a bigger shower,” says Kate. “My son’s adult-size now and a 900mm x 900mm shower is not ideal for him.” To achieve all their requests, Corinna needed to add to the bathroom’s existing footprint. She found some unused space in a walk-in wardrobe that backed onto the bathroom – although it meant moving a wall to take advantage of it. “There was not a lot, only about the depth of a shelf, but it was enough to allow us to relocate the shower and the toilet,” says Kate.

M

egan, the owner of this beautiful powder room, admits she’s always had a soft spot for the colour green, which is just one of the reasons why she loves this room so much. Working with interior designer Kia Howat of GIA Bathrooms & Kitchens, Megan and her husband Dean chose a feature wall of green mosaic tiles to create a calming focal point in the sanctuary-style space. “It’s a very soothing colour,” she explains of the choice. The renovation of the powder room was one part of a larger makeover of the 15-year-old home. The original room was functional but lacked personality, and the family was keen to update the look and choose high-quality surfaces. “We wanted to make it more upmarket and improve the fittings, but didn’t want to spend a huge amount of money,” says Megan. Located on the ground floor of the home, the powder room is mainly used by guests, although it is used in the peak times by the couple’s three teenage sons, Edward, 18, Harry, 16, and Angus, 14, which is why it had to include a few more practical features, such as a vanity with lots of storage on hand. “Most mornings somebody’s hogging the bathroom!” says Megan. “We had to make sure there was space where the boys could keep a toothbrush or comb. So we really wanted a vanity unit that also had a more practical use.” The couple saved on their costs by keeping the plumbing in the same locations, but invested in some wow elements – particularly the feature wall of mosaic ‘Kit Kat’ tiles from GIA and a custom-made vanity. The result is a space that is both laid-back and contemporary. “We like a clean look and I love anything green,” says Megan. “So it’s perfect.”

tiles “The tiled wall became a feature element, which adds texture to the room without taking up any space,” says Megan about the green ‘Kit Kat’ mosaic tiles from GIA. Instead of tiling the entire wall, Kia created a striking 3D effect by tiling an extra panel on top of the wall (opposite), which effectively frames the vanity.

Most of the accessories, including the Phoenix Vivid tapware from Reece, are in a matt black and effectively frame the white benchtop and green tiles. The ‘Aim’ replica pendant from Lucretia (right) was an instant hit with Megan, who says she loved it on sight. The ‘Flynn’ mirror in Black from Shelley Panton adds to the spacious feel.

sophisticated and classic colour palette was the stylish base for this ensuite in a new Hamptonsstyle home in a Melbourne beachside suburb. “We wanted to have a really open, calm space,” says homeowner Kate. “This is our forever home, so we were after longevity and a style that wouldn’t go out of date, one that was timeless.” A practical and functional bathroom was also part of the brief to designer Serena Elise of White Chalk Design. “They wanted a very luxurious hotel-style bathroom that had a feeling of space,” says Serena. “We chose the marble slab [for the feature wall] and worked back from there.” A consistent look was the key throughout this contemporary bathroom, with natural materials in shades of grey, white and black as the pillars of the design. The dark charcoal-coloured floor tiles complement the light grey-veined marble and crisp white cabinetry. “We suggested these colours to add a more modern aesthetic to the standard Hamptons style, which can often lean more towards creams and whites,” says Serena. The large feature wall is the stand-out for both the owner and the designer. “I love the marble dividing wall behind the bath,” says Kate of the design element, which acts as a chic divider. The zone’s monochromatic theme is continued with a selection of framed black-and-white prints from Frankie & Coco. “It’s a really relaxing space – you’re away from the busyness of the rest of the house,” she adds.

The Hamptons-style vanity (below), built by Moorabbin Cabinets, stars double sinks, Zucchetti basin mixers and a stunning honed Carrara marble bench, which ties in with the nearby feature wall. The chic cabinetry is painted in Dulux Whisper White half strength.

aving renovated and built half a dozen homes for their family, Melbourne property developers Caroline and Tony wanted to create a different style for their most recent project. “We added a modern extension to a 100-year-old Californian bungalow, so when it came to our new ensuite we wanted to continue the black-and-concrete look we’d used throughout,” says Caroline. The starting points for the design were large-format ‘Arkitek Grey’ tiles from Beaumont Tiles that run along the floor and up the walls, teamed with matt black accessories. To break up the big expanse of grey and define the vanity area, a striking wall of black penny round mosaics were laid. “They’re my favourite feature,” she enthuses. “They created the exact effect I wanted. Simple, a little bit edgy, but not too trendy.” Another aspect Caroline treasures is the absence of windows, which lends the space a hotel-like feel. “When you shut the door, you can block off everything else and relax,” she says. Instead of having windows, a skylight from Custom Skylights bathes the space in natural light. Although the couple considered adding a bath, the luxury of open space was more desirable to them. “Baths look great, but I would have only used it once in a blue moon, so instead we splashed out on an extra-large custom vanity,” explains Caroline. The ultra-generous proportions of the custom joinery with mirrored medicine cabinets is perfect for two. “When the vanity was first installed I thought there might be too much storage because it is so long, but we’ve filled it up and Tony and I love having our own basins and space,” she says. With their next project always on the horizon, the couple will no doubt build again for themselves and, when they do, Caroline says she’ll definitely use black again. “It’s such a great colour for the bathroom and very easy on the eye.”

custom vanity In keeping with the monochrome scheme the vanity, made by A-Plus Cabinets, was clad in Polytec ‘Ravine’ timber veneer in Black Wenge, topped with a Quantum Quartz benchtop in Graphite. As it’s such a long vanity, Caroline decided to step down the bench at either end to create a storage niche. “I like the variation in height and the open shelves are superhandy for towels,” she says.

wall & floor tiles To further enhance the ensuite’s spacious proportions, 450mm x 900mm ‘Arkitek Grey’ glazed porcelain rectified tiles from Beaumont Tiles run across the floor and up the wall (left & opposite). “I love that they resemble concrete, which ties in nicely with the black,” says Caroline, referring to the feature wall in Mono ‘Penny Round’ mosaics in Black (far left), also from Beaumont.

“Rather than over-complicate things, I like a pared-back palette as it allows you to introduce textures and scale,” explains owner Caroline. “The key to making it work is clean lines and incorporating different tactile finishes, like matt tapware, wood grain and tiles with a slight sheen. These give a feeling of luxury and opulence, without being an assault on the senses.”

wall & floor tiles The vastness of this bathroom made it the ideal candidate for large format ‘Trilogy’ 1200mm x 600mm porcelain tiles in Sky Smoke from Pave Tile Co. (above), to showcase the grandeur of the space. As designer Claire Foot explains: “It’s quite rare that we use tiles that large in a bathroom. In a smaller room we have to cut them, which then defeats the purpose.” Calacatta tiles in White, also from Pave Tile Co, create an elegant feature wall (opposite, far right).

here’s something special about making a home your own – with your unique sense of style, colour scheme and even internal layout. That was the driving force behind this renovation by couple Vanda and Johnny, which commenced not long after the pair bought the new home – located in the inner city suburbs of Melbourne – to share with their three children, Olivia, 20, Daniel, 18, and Damon, 12. “We wanted to put our own personal touches on the colour scheme and the feel of the home so it really felt like it was us,” explains Vanda. “We wanted it to suit our needs as a family of five, and our tastes and preferences.” The renovation included reworking two bathrooms: the main bathroom pictured here, plus an ensuite. Vanda and Johnny worked with Claire Foot of Smarter Bathrooms on the design and execution of the renovated spaces, with the couple sourcing a few key pieces themselves – including the beautiful freestanding bath, which is the feature piece. Indeed, the bath was high on the list of must-haves for the room. The house previously had two baths, but Vanda says they weren’t being utilised properly. “We decided that we only needed one bathroom with a bath where you had the option of sinking into a tub and putting some candles on to relax,” she says. And, she adds, that’s what happens now it’s all finished. “We put candles on the shelves and it’s great,” she confirms. “There is a shelf across the bath, and you can fit a glass of wine and a book on it.” Designer Claire agrees. “It really is very luxurious, and with those pendant lights near the bath, it just makes it the right amount of moody so you can really relax,” she says.

{ LESSON LEAR NED }

The family stayed put during the reno, managing without a bathroom for three months. But Vanda says it was a positive experience: “We would go to the gym, have a workout, a shower and come home. We were pretty fit by the end of it! It was good for the kids to learn to live in a compromised situation.”

vanity The custom-made vanity (left) in V20 Smoked Oak Sandblasted veneer from George Fethers & Co provides a subtle reference to the timber flooring in the other rooms. It’s topped with a 60mm Caesarstone ‘Statuario Maximus’ bench and an Apaiser ‘Oman’ basin, echoing the lines of the bath. All the tapware is from the Abey ‘Ovale’ collection.

shower Designer Claire made clever use of an awkward intrusion in the space – a separate room for the toilet with its own entry. “The remaining space worked perfectly for the shower (top right),” she says. “So we put a frameless glass shower panel in to make the room feel even bigger, and you can’t even see the shower screen there.” >

estaurant and cafe owners and regular travellers Steven and Hoa were clear with the brief for their bathroom – they wanted somewhere they could luxuriate after a long day at work. The Melbournebased couple work hard and travel frequently, especially to Asia, and wanted a relaxing haven to come home to. Rod Dawson from Dawson Tanner Architects worked with the couple to create a cohesive, classic aesthetic, with a nod to Hoa’s time spent in Laos. Tactile surfaces are combined with warm natural dolomite stone tiles, light wells and greenery to create a generous, open space. With adult children who don’t live at home any more, Steven and Hoa were happy to make the wet area a grown-up zone – and feel they have succeeded. “We tried to replicate a couple of really nice bathrooms that we’ve been to overseas in beautiful hotels,” explains Steven. “I feel like we’re in a hotel but without having to travel.” And it’s that focus on travel that has inspired them both. “We’ve seen a lot of things in our travels where they use lots of greenery to create a relaxing atmosphere, and it can change the perspective of the house and the way you live,” he says. The new bathroom was part of an extensive renovation the couple completed on their home. And Steven and Hoa’s only regret is that they don’t spend as much time at the renovated property as they would like – the long hours they put in at the restaurant make it hard to juggle it all. “We work late nights so we pretty much just come home and sleep,” says Steven. “But when we do get to use the bath, it is wonderful.”

The key to this bathroom is its textures, says architect Rod Dawson. The dolomite tiles, which match those used in the kitchen, have not been polished. “Steven and Hoa wanted a honed or slightly polished slab – but not to reveal the aggregate, just enough to take the surface off and make it a warmer finish,” he says.

O

f all the aesthetic tides we’ve surfed – from the plummy Home Counties accents of Liberty prints and cottage gardens that thumbed their petunia-clad noses at the Australian climate, through breathless wirebrushed flirtations with shabby chic and Adobe Santa Fe – there has been a constant in Australian homes. Dispatched to under-trafficked corners of rooms and distant nooks of backyards, these items are often so utilitarian they are rendered invisible by their mundanity. We’re talking pet gear. And boy, do we love our animals. According to the RSPCA, this wide brown land enjoys one of the highest levels of pet ownership on the planet. At last count, there are more than 24 million pets in Australia – creatures that slither, scamper, swim and scoot within our walls. And each of which come with its own variety of paraphernalia. Let’s start outside with kennels. As hard as it may now be to believe, there was a time when many Australians thought that dogs were like water slides, rockeries and people who knocked on the door to talk religion: they belonged outside. That’s not to say that our hounds weren’t cared for. Kennels once featured as commonly in our gardens as gardenias – except not quite as fragrant. Usually made from timber, the humble kennel came to represent a generation-bridging DIY project in which the thrillingly dangerous prospect of power tools came into play. Throw in a couple of old blankets or outgrown jumpers and Rover was pretty much set. Of course this was the time before it was collectively decided to henceforth give animals names drawn from your grandparents’ generation. Full disclosure – this writer has a dog called Barry. Barry Crocker Spaniel. Inside the house, things became somewhat plusher. Back in the day, it was all about the basket. Wicker affairs lined with surplus linens and perhaps an old teddy – as in bear, not lingerie – thrown in to play the role of cuddling companion. Then, at some point,

these gave way to rectangular dog beds available in rustic fabrics that matched the room’s colour scheme, as much of an accessory as a strategic scatter cushion. Albeit one that was occupied by a family member who routinely passed out in company, dragged his bottom across the rug and broke wind with startling impunity. The more feline-centric of you will notice that cats haven’t yet been mentioned. This is not because we are playing favourites. Rather, it’s the inescapable reality that it’s all actually the cat’s furniture, and by that we mean the entire house – they’re just tolerating you living in it. How else to explain the existence of litter trays? An item that is so singularly bizarre and aesthetically jarring we would never be able to explain it to interplanetary visitors without them quickly and quite accurately surmising it’s the cats who rule the humans: “Of course, Kitty, feel free to do your business inside. I’ll clean it up shortly. The dog? Oh, he has to go outside. And if he doesn’t I’ll rub his nose in it. But you’re good though. Whatevs.”

“KENNELS ONCE FEATURED AS COMMONLY IN AS GARDENIAS – EXCEPT NOT OUR QUITE AS FRAGRANT”

gardens

Lest you’re think we’re speciesist, let’s also acknowledge the cages, aquaria, hutches and coops that came and went in our homes, along with their inhabitants and the enthusiasms of their young owners. However, the main players, statistically speaking, have always been, and will always be, pusses and pups. Which means toys. Everywhere. From saliva-encrusted tennis balls to once-fluffy-now-crusty stuffed animals to feathers on a piece of string. And we minded them all not a bit. Because the joy they gave the animals was a small decor price to pay for the joy these animals gave to us.
