Everest Base Camp Trek 19 Days

Trip Description “Everest Base Camp Trek” is one of the most famous in the world and the magic begins on the flight to Lukla, with breathtaking views of the Khumbu region. From Lukla the scenic trail proceeds through beautiful Sherpa villages and lush valleys before spending a day to acclimatize and perhaps enjoy the colorful Saturday market at Namche Bazaar. You will experience incredible views of the Himalayan Mountains, vast glaciers and Monastery (Tengboche - also home to the world’s highest Buddhist monastery) on the way to Everest Base Camp. Dingboche boasts more stunning views of the mountains, villages and valleys and allows another day for acclimatization. On to Gorak Shep, you will pass monuments erected to commemorate the deaths of (several) Sherpas who perished in avalanches. The Everest Base Camp consists of semipermanent camps set up by mountaineers and Mt. Everest is not visible from this area. Hike to Kala Pattar, a shelf at the foot of Mt. Pumori, and see the spectacular views unfold of the south face of Mt. Everest. With a sense of achievement and the thrill of the return journey (from Everest Base Camp), it will be time to head back to Lukla.

This insurance must include costs, air ambulance and helicopter rescue services. We also strongly recommend that you take out cancellation insurance. You should be aware that some policies do not include, or restrict, cover for this type of travel. You must ensure that the policy you do take provides an adequate level of protection and covers you for the activities involved. You must carry proof of insurance (e.g. your insurance certificate) with you on the holiday; if you cannot provide this at the start of the holiday, you will be required to take out a suitable policy at that time. If this is not done or impossible for practical reasons, then you will not be allowed to continue with your trip and will not be entitled to any refund for services not provided.

You should be prepared 4-7 hours of walking or jugging exercise everyday before at least 3 months before your Everest Base Camp Trek starts because you are walking on high altitude. And also you must need a positive attitude and a strong determination; previous hiking/camping experience preferred and no technical experience need.

Accommodation Accommodation for Everest base camp trek is included in the trip cost and we have chosen accommodation options based on the following criteria; standard of hygiene, standard of service, location, food standards and cost. There are two styles of accommodation; this depends on the itinerary you choose for the trek. During the Everest Base Camp Trek you will spend three nights at 4 -star Shanker hotel in Kathmandu. During your trekking you will spend 15 nights at the local best available hotel/lodge. All accommodation is based on twin share. We will provide you single supplement if there is different sex. On request single supplement will be charge US$ 300. Toilet Facilities - On trek, toilet facilities are available at Tea Houses but some places beyond your expectation and available a local toilet.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) Our itinerary is planned with a high degree of minimization of awareness of AMS(Acute Mountain Sickness). Going up too fast causes a medical condition serious enough to kill. The higher the altitude the less oxygen there is in the air. On the summit of Kalapattar (5554m/18192ft), Everest Base Camp (5357m/17575ft) for example, there is 50% less oxygen than at sea level. Your body needs many days to adapt to this so for a safe trek it absolutely essential to allow for sufficient time for acclimatization. Sensible planning is therefore required to minimize the risk of AMS. We advise specially the guest(s) with known heart or lungs or blood diseases to consult their doctor before traveling. Mild headaches, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorder are symptoms of AMS. Check out a reference website for AMS, Trek safe http://www.treksafe.com.au/medical/altitude_illness.htm HGT’s itineraries are designed to try to prevent AMS but it is important to remember, some people can be more susceptible than others.

Environmental awareness Himalayan Glacier committed to responsible tourism. As an organization we have come to realize that travel is much more rewarding when you have been able to contribute and put something back into the local communities in which we visit. We also believe actions speak louder than words. Therefore, Himalayan Glacier is committed to contributing to various organizations and “live” projects that have a positive impact directly on local environments and cultures.

General Travel Information Destination Information - Nepal Nepal's culture is greatly influenced by its music, architecture, religion and literature. Your first sight of Nepal may leave you speechless, the great quantities of temples, churches, monasteries and other religious buildings, the hurlyburly in the streets and the number of people and animals socializing on every corner of the narrow cobble-stone lanes. Nepal has about thirty-six different ethnic groups and multiple religions and languages. Its music is similarly varied, with pop, religious, classical and folk music being popular. Musical genres from Tibet and Hindustan have greatly influenced Nepalese music. Usually, women, even of the musician castes, do not play music except for specific situations, such as at the traditional all-female wedding parties. The architecture of Nepal is another art that has become an important part of the country's culture. Nepal's architecture can be divided into three broad groups, the stupa style, the pagoda style and the shikhara style. The Hindu inhabitants in the country has been constantly over 80 percent since the 1950s. The second largest religion of Nepal is Buddhism, it is practiced by about 11 percent, while Islam comprises of about 4.2 percent of the population. The Kirat religion makes up nearly 3.6 percent of the population. Nepal has many customs and beliefs that might be difficult to understand and not so easy to obey but this is the way of life to them and you should respect it when you are in its territory. Do not feel offended if any Nepalese hesitates to shake hands with you because it hasn't been very long since the western traditions were introduced to them. Most Nepalese greet one another by a “Namaste”, a common act done by putting the palms together in a prayer like gesture. It is customary to eat and deal with food with your right hand. They use their left hand to wash themselves after being to the toilet. Note that most Nepalese eat with their hands, forks and spoons are not very common.

Passport, Visa and Permits A tourist visa is required to travel in Nepal, for information on cost and an online application form go to: www.newweb.net/nepal_embassy/visaform.htm Or you can get the Nepal entry visa up on arrival at the airport in Katmandu. It is just easy to attain your Nepalese visa on arrival in Katmandu. Make the process easier by downloading & completing the application form, having the correct US$30 and two passport photographs.

Money Exchange Exchange rate of your currency to the local currency of Nepal is changed each day. However, for updated and trustworthy information you can visit below stated website: http://www.nepalnews.com.np/forex.php http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic

Departure Taxes When leaving Nepal, 1695 rupees is required at the counter at the airport and should be paid before check-in. For flights to South Asia member countries e.g. India, departure tax is 770 Nepalese rupees.

Responsible Tourism Environmental Awareness and Positive Tourism Impact Himalayan Glacier committed to responsible tourism. All Himalayan Glacier trips aim for ‘zero footprint’ impact on the natural environment and the people who live off its’ resources. We enforce a number of do’s and don’ts for our customers and staff when out in the wilderness. Some of these include: • We always stay in solar powered lodges where possible • We discourage hot showers when not strictly needed • We use boiled or treated water for drinking (we never use bottled water) • We only use gas or kerosene on camping treks • We avoid short cuts through hillsides & fields preventing further land erosion • We are extremely conscious of disposing litter in an ecologically sound way Employing & Training Local People Himalayan Glacier only employs and train local staff. By employing and training local people they put something back into their communities. HGT currently train all their Guides in the following courses • Intensive Wilderness First Aid – KEEP (Kathmandu Environmental Educational Project) • Trekking Guide Training - His Majesty's Government Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation department of Hotel Management & Tourism Training Centre of Nepal. • Eco Trekking Workshop & Adventure Meet – TAAN (Trekking Agents Association Of Nepal) • English Language - KEEP • Conservation & Biodiversity - KEEP • Rock & Ice Climbing & Mountaineering (optional) – Nepal Mountaineering Association Local guides obviously speak local language and this enables a HGT traveler to pick up and use a few of the local greetings and get first hand experience of the local culture. The guides and porters know the route direction like the back of their hand, they practice the local culture themselves and they are extremely passionate about their country and it shows.

Minimum Cultural Impact Policy Himalayan Glacier is committed to the people of the countries we travel to, and seeks to minimize cultural impact particularly when traveling to more remote and less frequented areas. We encourage and educate all our customers to be conscious of these cultural differences and suggest the following guidelines: to discourage begging, respect holy places, dress and behave modestly, don't flaunt your wealth, respect people's privacy when taking photos, respect local etiquette and finally always keep a sense of humor! Child Environment Nepal Himalayan Glacier funds Child Environment Nepal (CEN). It was established in 2002 to provide support for 13 orphans, who lost their parents in a tragedy. A childcare home was set up just 5km northwest of Katmandu. Having run the orphanage for more than a year now, CEN is ready to take the next steps. For more information on CEN activities please visit : http://www.cennepal.org.np HGT is currently focused on improving marketing and fundraising channels, and developing future plans on the orphanage and funding some local schools in more rural areas. If you are interested in supporting CEN financially e-mail or when you reach Katmandu speak to HGT’s Mr. Sagar Pandey. Mr. Gerald Lewinsohn’s exprience while on Everest Base Camp Trek. We think of our trip often because it was such an extraordinary adventure. Now that a few months have passed, the highlights of our trek to Everest stand out even more vividly in retrospect than they did at the time. In reviewing those highlights most people would expect us to wax poetically about the beautiful wooded countryside on the way to Namche. Also who could forget the scary crossings of those wonderfully engineered suspension bridges replete with their colorful prayer flags billowing in the breeze while far below the rapidly flowing bluish-tinged glacier water (of the Dudh Khosi and Imja Khola rivers), twisted its way from up high, framed by steep cliffs on either side. Others would expect us to dwell on the Yaks, those magnificent creatures, unknown to most Westerners, that can only survive in the rarified atmosphere in and above Namche and that are so important to the local economy. Yet others would cite the cultural aspects of the Bhuddists through whose villages we trekked and who made such an indelible impression on us with their spirituality, their gentle ways, and the warmth of their beautiful smiles. And of course who would not expect us to rave about the raw starkness and hostile remoteness of the legendary Himalayan peaks that brought us to the Khumbu region in the first place.

But despite the thrill of all of the above and the many more memorable incidents too numerous to mention along the way, what really stands out when we think of our trip is the excellent service you and your staff provided, literally from the time we landed in Kathmandu on December 26, 2006 until we left on January 18, 2007. As you recall we were a group of just two‌ my wife and myself. On the trek our guides were Raj and Nirkuma and our porters were Lakpa and Ramish. Our trek was far from routine particularly given our dietary preferences, the fact that we were older (and in my case probably far less fit) than the average trekker and finally the inordinate delay presented by the weather on the way back from Lukla and consequently all that was entailed in terms of our reserved flights home. You and your staff handled all the challenges of our trek in a most professional and caring way with appropriate attention to detail that makes all the difference when the unexpected arises. What we especially valued and very much appreciate was the concern for our welfare and safety that was always paramount with your team. They were also very considerate and kind. You can be very proud of them! When the possibility arose of a large group of trekkers unexpectedly filling a lodge, Raj would rush ahead to make sure space was available for us. When I would linger along the trail to take more photographs, Nirkuma would go out of his way to help me if needed. When we arrived at our lodge some evenings tired and hungry, our guides saw to it that we were provided with food and tea with minimum delay. When we departed in the mornings your men would make sure we had left nothing behind. Also, there was no pressure whatsoever imposed on us to rush and we were encouraged to pace ourselves and to follow a flexible schedule. This I think greatly facilitated our acclimatization and ultimate success in reaching the top of Kala Patthar. A word about our porters, Ramish and Lapka: They did a phenomenal job, whatever the climbing conditions. Our gear was always waiting for us in our room when we arrived at our destination each evening and was always picked up promptly in the morning when we were ready to leave. They never once complained, always treated our luggage with care they would their own and always greeted us with a warm and friendly smile. Finally we also have to compliment two of your Kathmandu staff, David and Hira. They were so helpful on our last day when we arrived back with barely time to make our international flight home. They monitored the flights in from Lukla, picked us as soon as we arrived, whisked us through heavy traffic into town to change our tickets, rushed us to our hotel to pick up our left luggage and returned us to the airport just in time to make our flight. This was a remarkable level of service under the circumstances. As a tourist in an unfamiliar environment it is really important to be taken care of by a highly professional and experienced team who can be depended upon, especially when the unexpected happens. Himalayan Glacier Trekking unequivocally delivered for us and we most happily recommend your company without hesitation. Please feel free to pass on my email address to any and all prospective clients. Best wishes for your continued success, Gerald Lewinsohn, Livingston, NJ, USA
