Sagot sa Kinabukasan, Abot
Karamihan?

The discontinuation of SHS-AT, stirred discussions and various reactions among many other students, expressing their disappointment over the missed opportunities for aspiring students seeking quality education at MSUGSC.
Maria Sofia Dizor, a student from STEM 11-Ganymede, shared that despite acknowledging the institution’s dedication to providing quality education, she expressed disappointment over the missed opportunities for individuals who could have benefited from transferring to MSU for their senior high school years.
“Opportunity missed is an opportunity lost,” Dizor remarked after reading the pronouncement.
Mona Alcoseba from STEM 11-Titan also shared her insights regarding the issue, stating that she was upset on behalf of those students who wanted to grab the opportunity to take the examination.
“I feel bad for those students who wanted to grab the opportunity to take the exam here,” Alcoseba remarked, encapsulating the sentiments of many students just like those at Mindanao State UniversityCollege of Education Training Department (MSU-CETD). Among them, Angelina Domasig expressed a sense of dismay, especially considering their anticipation of welcoming transferees in the upcoming year.
“It’s quite upsetting po since we expected to have transferees to make new friends,” Angelina remarked.
Despite the heavy emotions felt by the students of Siklab, even the colleges and the Grade 11 aspirants, the aforementioned pronouncement about the discontinuation was already final, this is to follow the CHED Memorandum Order Nos. 32 and 33, Series of 2015 and 2016 released last December 18, 2023.

Hon. Risa Hontiveros champions the cause of Gender Equality for the 2024 Women’s Month Celebration by Andrei Anthony Cuizon
Honorable Risa Hontiveros spearheaded the commencement of Women’s Month 2024, providing an insightful discourse among proponents of gender equality and imparting profound insights and knowledge to the advocates, under the theme ”Marching on Together for a Gender Responsive and Inclusive Society,” which transpired in Mindanao State University - General Santos City Gymnasium on the 1st of March this year.
Among the pivotal topics discussed by Hontiveros was the pressing need for drug rehabilitation rights for women. She advocated for a division of labor within the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and stressed the necessity of centralizing efforts towards drug abusers within the health system rather than relying on law enforcement.
“There should be a division of labor sa PDEA. Suppression of demand and harm reduction towards drug abusers should be centralized to the health system, not the police,” she stressed.
Additionally, Hontiveros underscored the lack of women’s representation within governmental roles as well as across various sectors.
“Women representation in governments remains limited. According to studies, only 2 out of 10 officials are women. That disparity in the government is reflected in many sectors such as business and wider academe,” she said.
Furthermore, she emphasized the advantages of increasing female representation, citing the amplification of voices and the promotion of social justice as key benefits.
“It is a fact that more women leaders allow bigger, louder, and empathetic voices. Female representation advances not only gender and social equality but also social justice,” she asserted.
Her words resonated with a call to action, urging individuals not to succumb in fear and strive for success, not just for themselves, but for women and other marginalized communities.
“Wag tayong matakot. Strive to success, not only yourself but also women and other marginalized people. Magtulungan tayo, hindi tayo susuko at lalong hindi tayo mananahimik,” she declared.
She then exclaimed the principle that regardless of one’s sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (SOGIE), a person is a person.
“A person is a person, whatever it is their SOGIE,” she
conveyed.
Hontiveros expressed her hope to see more women be the best that they can be, leaving behind a renewed sense of purpose and unity among the attendees, poised to march forward in the ongoing fight for gender equality and social justice.

And, I believe at this age, napakaimportante ng technology na ito para sa mas magandang interactions between the teachers and students,” dagdag pa niya.
“So, I’ll expect that with this project, all students can sit comfortably
on their chairs rather than going forward dahil hindi klaro ang projector. So, mas comfortable at convenient not only for the students, but also for the teachers kasi yang TV ay nakamount na and di na kukuha ng projector every now and then. So, that’s learning

“It was so fun experiencing this kind of event. All I could think about was how thankful I was to be chosen to participate in this kind of event. Pero of course, lamang talaga yung kaba for me kasi first time ko on stage and sa isang napakalaking event pa talaga,” ani Betorin.

The existence of extracurricular activities shapes the life of a student. Its purposes are to hone the skills of a student, make the student meet a new community outside of their institution, and for institutions to build a good reputation. These activities could be in a form of specialization outside schools – such as sport tournaments for athletes, quiz bees for quizzers, and school press conferences for Filipino campus journalists. However, these are sometimes ignored as students prioritize their academics and the activities in their respective schools more.
The Weight of ExtraCurricular Activities for Journalists
by Jayvee Joring
as quiz bees and tournaments, the Himig Isko Student Publication of the MSU-GSC Senior High Department was unable to attend the 2024 Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) – one of the biggest activities for a campus journalist. The reason behind this news was deemed to not be disclosed. Regardless of the reason, this absence has become a loss to the MSU-GSC Senior High Department, especially that a lot of the department’s journalists have expected to join this year’s event.

Here in MSU-GSC Senior High Department, we strive for integrity and excellence. The department has held specialized events – such as the “SHS Week”, the “SaLITA sa Camp PaSIKLABan”, the “TechnoSciMath Fair”, and the campus-wide Intramurals. Nonetheless, nothing still feels more challenging and fun than sending the students outside of the arena or their comfort zone. Even though the department also puts significance on extra-curricular activities such
Campus journalism is a significant part of media in schools, because it serves as a platform for students to voice their opinions and concerns, and helps in shaping the campus environment. So, isn’t it a bit ironic that one strives for excellence but one limits opportunities that await outside of the prestigious arena? To specify, the Senior High level is the last time for campus journalists to have an SPC experience. Imagine a setting where a campus journalist is silenced to express and improve their journalistic approaches and meet a new world of journalism, it silences and attacks the values that a campus journalist holds. Although reasons could sometimes be out of a department’s hands such as lacking support that would make the entry to these competitions not possible and it might not even be in one’s plan, it is still important to not let student journalists’ passion in the field down because these individuals will grow
Shabby State of Serenity
In 2017, the city of Marawi served as the site of a fivemonth-long siege, which took no less than a thousand lives, left dilapidated infrastructures, and deprived the people living there of their livelihood and safety. This enabled Amnesty International to publish a detailed human rights analysis report about the siege. This type of narrative only proves that in situations such as a war, there is no right or wrong side, but only who will be left, and to determine that, these innocent people are at the mercy of the clashing sides. Years passed,
and there remains a dispute inflicted through violence. This has become normal and prevalent, that even schools and places of worship cannot escape.
Undoubtedly, the aftermath of the incident is an underlying effect of the lack of security at the university. It is not just rooted in religious discrimination as all the media always suggests, but this MSU-Marawi bombing inrwcident is a mirror of sheer negligence. While safety might be emphasized by the whole Mindanao State University (MSU) system and its coordinating bodies, there is still a vast discrepancy between theories and practice. It is
not emphasized enough. The Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2023 reports that the Philippines ranks 19th on the list of countries most affected by terrorism. The GTI ranks 163 countries based on: the total number of terrorist attacks, total number of fatalities caused by terrorism, total number of injuries, and the total number of hostages caused by terrorist groups in a given year. This data is already an indication of the government’s continuous actions to eliminate “threats” by utilizing various methods. However, the trajectory of our country’s security won’t move an inch because there are no proper allocations for safety, monetary, or strict policies. It is still going downhill.
Furthermore, despite these discrepancies, the bereaved families of the victims were able to receive proper monetary compensation. According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s third report on the bombing incident, the department provided a total of Php 898,497.02 worth of assistance to the affected individuals; of which, Php 3,497.02 are nonfood items and Php
895,000.00 are financial assistance through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS). The Commission on Higher Education also stated that the MSU system has also provided academic leniency towards its students, with consideration to their physical and mental wellbeing. Stricter policies have also been implemented. A bomb scare is taken seriously and checkpoints are properly utilized. If an explosion occurred at a time of worship, inside a school, it can happen to anyone, any time, any place. No one expected such a tragedy to happen.
Nevertheless, let this be engraved in our history. It serves as a reminder of how cruelty remains prevalent in this country when it’s supposed to be governed in reflection of what was promised by the administration.
This tragedy is part of many more acts of violence that can and may occur inside such premises. Additionally, these harms may not only stem from external conflicts, but can also take place in the form of bullying, assault, and other situations where students or staff are at a vulnerability. Nevertheless, the priority should be on the safety of each person inside the learning facilities. As long as the responsible authorities focus their attention solely on one area of a large field, it will never be possible to establish a harmonious system. The safety of a certain perimeter will depend on the measures that will be implemented, and it should not lack in any aspect. Because a small negligence may
With no doubt, the MSU-GSC Senior High Department did succeed in holding the previously mentioned events that truly honed the generalized talents of the students and the new people in the institution that they met. Nevertheless, it is still right to also put emphasis on specialization of journalism. However, there are still existing financial and competency factors that truly oppose a journalist’s opportunities outside schools, so it is recommended to assess those first.
This article is a signal for opening opportunities again to campus journalism as per Himig Isko’s slogan, “Truth in service, service in truth” is already a reason why there has to be a significance put on this field. Even though opportunities outside the school are significant, there also has to be a balance between those and the events inside the school. On behalf of the department’s journalists, we only ask for the department to assess a long way of taking the negating factors critically to further present more opportunities for journalists as they hold the unwavering truths and service for the school and the country.
cause the lives of many more. This bombing incident is an example.
A school such as MSU should not become a nest for chaos nor for these outbreaks of violence to be normalized, becoming part of the system itself. It should be an environment of tranquility that will serve as an extension of a home and as an effective learning space. Peace should never become sheer nor distributed scarcely, it should be delivered as a solid fortress not only for universities or schools but also to every part of this country. The Philippines is indeed a fastevolving country, both in terms of inequality and poverty. The call for action lies in the idea that everything is probable to happen, and that there is a possibility. A call for action should serve its purpose as a preventive measure and not as a coping strategy. Unfortunately, this is another call for action.

Sikat ngunit mapinsala.

at tagapakinig.

Almost every day, we hear devastating events happening around the world being reported on the news and in the media. Consequently, it disrupts peace and causes negative effects on the psychological health of many people. Usually, people on various media platforms talk about the prevalent matters of climate change, health and diseases, eco-

nomic problems, politics, and societal issues. In the present time, news regarding the ongoing tragic events and war between Israel and Palestine has been flooding the media. Bringing together people from different walks of life on various platforms, raising awareness among the public in the hopes of “waking” everyone up, helping those affected, standing up for the oppressed, and fighting for human rights.
But despite these, is hearing news about famine, death, bomb attacks, and all sorts of aggression effective enough to wake people’s senses up?
While others seem to talk and discuss these issues freely, some unconsciously tend to dismiss them. Completely turning a blind eye for the
sake of their peace—desensitizing. Shutting one’s self from the havoc and horror of violence, ironically, by getting more exposure to violence. Thus leading to numbness toward the subject. While desensitization is used to treat traumas and phobias in the field of psychiatry, this could be detrimental and consequently lead to the inability to empathize with and feel sensitivity toward someone’s suffering.
In the concept of war and terrorism, desensitization may bring more danger than benefit to humans’s ability to empathize. According to an analysis by Huesmann et al. (2023), desensitization could make people more “accepting” of violence as per the theory of social cognitive evaluation; the thought revolves around the “not feeling bad” concept in response
to hearing about violence. A harmful result of desensitization is the possible emergence of social apathy and the risk of disengaging from global issues as the impact of war becomes less looked upon.
War desensitization is a complex psychological problem with wide implications for people, society, and humanity as a whole. As people explore and are exposed to the media, it is crucial to recognize the possible effects of becoming desensitized to the realities of conflict. A person wouldn’t be aware that he or she has completely desensitized himself or herself from violence; therefore, “waking” someone up through the talks of war wouldn’t always come as expected.
Desensitization is inevitable, as it does not come as a choice but rather as a reaction. News and media,
Bip! Bip!: Reckless Modernization
by Ashley Reeze Advincula
“Bip! Bip!” Along the roads of bustling traffic are the identity and backbone of Filipino commuting. Jeepneys are the most utilized means of public transportation in the country. Currently, there is a rough estimate of 200,000 jeepneys that are in use in the Philippines and with that, 40% of urban commuters rely on this vehicle for their daily trips and errands.
Despite their everyday use and the huge percentage of citizens that benefit from them, jeepneys are now in danger of being obsolete. The Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) was launched in 2017. This program is proposed to be the government’s solution to the transport-related problems and future demands of the country. Poorly executed PUV modernization is not the solution to transport issues.
In this fleet modernization, PUVs such as jeepneys, vans, and multi-purpose vehicles aged 15 years or older, must adhere to the standards stated in the guidelines.
Examples of the said guidelines are installed GPS, automated fare collection systems, television cameras, and more installed utilities in the vehicle. PUV operators are also expected to consolidate with transport corporations or co-operatives to continue their operations – their livelihood.
“Para po!” The government states that this is for the safety, efficiency, and environmental wellbeing of the country. But who are the ones benefiting from this? 300,000 drivers and small entrepreneurs are expected to be displaced, risking their source of income and the financial stability of their families.
The PUVMP is not a sustainable solution. Modernization is meant to benefit the citizens, not cost them their jobs and income.
With the demands of modernizing jeepneys, drivers are now pressured into getting loans and purchasing e-jeeps amounting to 2.8 million pesos. With the handful they earn daily, it is only enough to feed their families. It is absurd that they are
expected to come up with an amount tremendously more expensive than traditional jeepneys. The government is offering a subsidy that will only cover 5.7% of the expenses, a superficial solution to a big foreboding issue.
Three big reasons are brought up in every discussion as to why PUVMP is essential: traffic, environmental benefit, and convenience. Jeepneys only make up about 2% of the registered vehicles in the country and PUVs only contribute to 15% of the particulate matter emissions in Manila, significantly lower than private vehicles and other industries. Lastly, convenience, Jeepneys are already convenient as they are. It’s affordable and easily accessible for the common citizen, though it seems that the definition of convenience for the government and the masses is different. Modernization comes at a price, not just for PUV operators but also for commuters. Organizations predict a 400% hike in jeepney fares in the coming years.
“Urong lang, kasya pa!” Jeepney drivers are Filipinos too and restricting them from the
opportunity to work is unfair, especially considering that they are big contributors to the Philippines’ growing economy. For every occasion, may it be school, work, job interviews, or outings, there was a driver that safely brought you to your destination. Now that their livelihood is at risk, they also need drivers of humane change.
Modernization is not the problem; rather, it’s the execution. If the government is genuine in its interest in creating a safer and cleaner environment, then it will not be a heavy burden to allocate additional budget to increase the subsidy rate. Lifting the burdens of the drivers and emphasizing that this transport reform is a collaborative effort, beneficial for both government and citizens.
Opting for locally made e-jeeps also has the potential to cut its price. The identity of traditional jeepneys, with their colorful personalizations, could also be retained while allowing Filipino ingenuity to take the stage. Considered cultural icons, jeepneys also carry the history and life of their drivers based on the drawings and creative choices displayed on
being the most accessible platforms for mass dissemination, must be able to pique the interest of the masses through their content, ensuring that human empathy is integrated into their topics, especially sensitive subjects. Through educating and making the world aware of the subject of war, people can maintain sensitivity regarding the human cost of war and engage in solving these issues by seeking peace and understanding.
Emotional responses toward violence have a significant impact on human lives. As humans, people should allow themselves to be humanized by embracing their emotions as a reminder of the human cost of war, to promote peaceful solutions to alleviate these conflicts in the future, and now during this time as war continues to escalate in various parts of the world.
the vehicle. This adds more to their significance that beats reckless modernization.
Listening is key to surely knowing that the execution of the mandates is conforming to both progress and the sustainability of operators’ and drivers’ livelihoods. This way, resources are not wasted and citizens are not troubled by poor handling of the PUVMP which is not the sole solution to the transport issues that it poses to solve. Filipino jeepney drivers are known for being able to make room for passengers no matter the difficulty. As a country, the government should also be prepared to make room for changes while listening to the comments and plight of those who hear the sound of jeepneys every day, no matter the setbacks.

Striking Gold in BALIGYAAY 2024
Science and Mathematics were developed over time by countless talented and genius minds. One of these is Archimedes, the Greek mathematician, physicist, and astronomer. Among all his accomplishments, he is best known for determining the exact value of pi. However, he had another very important contribution, the popularization of the term “Eureka!”
Unanticipated. Sudden. Out of the blue. That is what Archimedes’ discovery was. It was striking gold while digging in a pile of coal. Moments of Eureka happen everyday from finding the problems and hassles that trouble consumers, to developing the perfect product for an exhibit.
Last January 31, 2024, the Grade 12 STEM, ABM, and HUMSS Siklab entrepreneurs displayed and showcased the results of their “Eureka!” moments in this year’s Entrepreneurship Product Exhibit, with the theme “B.A.L.I.G.Y.A.A.Y 2024: Building a Legacy, Igniting Growth, and Yielding Ambitious Achievements among the Youth.” This is highly reflective of the event’s goal to encourage young
by
entrepreneurs of the Senior High School Department to think long-term and consider the lasting impact of their endeavors on their communities and industries, to foster innovation that drives growth, and to inspire confidence and motivation to pursue their dreams, particularly those concerned with entrepreneurship.
Forty-nine (49) businesses tirelessly placed efforts on their preparations and occupied the rooms of Siklab to show off their innovative and creative products to customers and business owners alike. Products presented during the exhibit ranged from Food and Drinks, Research and Technology, and Home and Lifestyle. A panel of faculty members roamed the stalls to evaluate the students’ clever and appealing products, as well their advertising posters and videos.
The company Articid garnered the most number of awards, such as Most Promising Young Entrepreneurs, Most Creative Booth, and Best in Product Advertisement. On social media, the company Kumportable rocked the platform by ranking 1st place in the Netizens’ Choice Award, and it was reflected by their award of Best Product in Home and Lifestyle Category. Aqualed’s Hydrosense stood its ground for Best Product in
Research and Technology Category and Veganten’s Pastil for Best Product in Food and Drink Category.
“Undoubtedly, Arcticid has done exceptional work this year. The product itself, the advertisement, and even the booth were all incredibly prepared. Arcticid definitely deserved the awards they bagged.” Majority would agree to this comment made by James Castor from 12 - Euler, one of the entrepreneurs that participated in the said event. Indeed, Articid is among those outstanding companies that stole the show in the exhibit, as they emerged victorious in taking home the major awards and with their team being recognized as the Most Promising Young Entrepreneurs.
Arcticid is an instant cool pack that offers instant relief for injuries such as sprains and joint strains. Originally, the problem that they sought to solve with their product was the constant scorching heat in
Siklab building.
In an interview with Cyla Diaz, the Managing Director of Arcticid, she shared the story and process of creating their cool packs. “An issue during those times [when we were thinking of an idea was the heat in Siklab], and we could not create a good idea. So that’s when our team thought [that] if we had other cool relievers it would be nice. What if we try to make cold packs?”
With their innovative idea for the product, they continued researching and continually developing based on the comments and suggestions of their panelists.
Ms. Diaz also added that they encountered difficulties in terms of the production stage, vision, and determining their target market. Eventually, they decided to market their instant relief packs for medical use and to anyone who is at risk of
injuries, so just about everybody.
Arcticid’s Managing Director remarked that their team struggled and was behind other companies. “Sa idea pa lang behind na kami. So, medyo na-set off yung pace ng group namin. [In the idea alone, we were behind. So, the pace of our group was off.]” This Siklab entrepreneur team visualized themselves as a real company in order to see the gaps in their pricing, mission, and future of the product.
“The day after [the] Entrep day, [we’re still shocked with all that happened]. I’m very proud of all of our awards [but] above all [the] “Most Promising Young Entrepreneurs” [was really the award that gave the] sign [that] we did it, since it was a fruit of our struggles as a group and our efforts of working together.”
Eureka! It is definitely a discovery to know that the participating companies had their own sides of the story, from formulation of ideas to the implementation in the production and marketing stage. They indeed struck gold, not just with the admirable awards that they received, but also with the realizations and fulfillment in seeing their visions be materialized and showcased. Grit, creativity, and eagerness definitely shined through their products. Truly, growth was ignited and achievements were yielded.

Ngunit bago pa man tayo magtungo riyan at bago pa man mabuo ang kanilang grupo, sila ay nag-awdisyon muna.
Very grateful ako dahil sila ang participants, dahil ‘di ba, ang output ay naka-first runner up.
Ayon naman kay Abdullah, “Madulang Sabayang Pagbigkas is a piece that grows a society.”

If a face can launch a thousand ships, then a film can launch a thousand visions. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a film is worth millions.
Films are one of the most pliable tools of influence in the community. They act as mirrors and amplifiers. The silver screen has the power to reflect a person and a collective society, and shine light on the beauties and flaws.
Even in its moments of silence, a movie still delivers weight and depth to the point at issue. In its most still and speechless instances, the core message still is not stifled nor muffled but amplified to educate, suggest, contradict – to create discourse.
This importance has been imbued in the Siklab culture as the faculty and students perceive the gravity of indulging in the community and featuring social issues that affect the masses.
This year, the Pista ng Pelikulang Siklab 2024 was launched with the theme “MUKHA.” This compelling and innovative program
was spearheaded by Mr. Yancy D. Dizon, LPT, a director and a faculty member of MSU-GSC Senior High School.
In this cinematic festivity, Siklab directors captured the situation of problems, stigmas, and injustices faced by the common people through documenting the lives of ordinary people. Namely, the people we see everyday but fail to perceive their real face and facets of life.
A myriad of films have done excellent jobs in painting the narratives that most of the time pass unrecognized by the audience’s eyes and ears. But one documentary stood out with the life story of Tatay Bobong. “Tunob” by Hulagway Productions, directed by Riana Marie Mallo, achieved the Best Documentary Film award.
In an interview, Mallo shared about the essence and behindthe-scenes of their film. “Our documentary is entitled “Tunob”. It features the story of Tatay Rey “Bobong” Pasujel, a person with disability— polio, where he is unable to fully use his lower limbs or legs to walk. The film focuses on his
determination and perseverance in providing for his family as a PWD. He sews and repairs shoes for a living. In the film, he talked about his life as a PWD: his struggles and challenges.”
She also added that Hulagway Productions encountered obstacles in their creative process. From having absences in class to breakdowns, they even decided to re-edit the entirety of their film. Eventually, she and her team overcame those challenges. “The moment I submitted a copy of our film, it felt fulfilling and at the same time exciting. It seemed like all the sacrifices I made were all worth it.”
Their production team’s head story developer, Jeulaya Mae Tocao could also attest to the sacrifices they had to make, one particular anecdote that she remembers
and that impacted her was during a sleepover they dedicated to completing the film. “Most of us even got sick due to the harsh weather conditions at the time. We barely managed to sleep. [That was the moment] where I can really say that not all heroes wear capes, some wear pajamas and fight deadlines with bleary eyes.”
Against all odds and setbacks, they continue to persevere in delivering a quality documentary film that gives justice to the beauty of the life of their subject, and creates a space where PWD laborers are recognized. “I hoped for “Tunob” to not just inspire, but also empower and give a platform to PWDs like Tatay Bobong,” Hulagway’s director added.
After all that’s said and done, the essence of the story that they
wanted to capture and share was the story of Tatay Bobong. The story that they yearned to bring to life was of his positivity, kindness, and perseverance. As it goes in their film, “Napamatud-an niyang dili lang ang mga makalakaw ang makabilin ug tunob. (He proved that not only those who can walk can leave behind a footprint.)” Featuring a story such as this is beyond golden, the trophies are only for added brilliance.
“Tunob” is a concrete example of the power of the silver screen. Films serve as the testimony to the stories that inspire humanity, and even those that pushes society to act. This Siklab-made documentary proved that films are not only worth a million words or can launch a thousand visions, but can also leave footprints in the life of the subjects, the creators, and the audience.

ANG PANAHON AT PAGHAWI
Ang Pagpapamalas sa Diwa ng Sining, Pagkatuto, at
Pagkakaisa sa Pagtambungaw
sa Sining: 35th Season and Festival of Dramatic Arts
Legends Spark Innovation in Arduino Workshop
by Jezzu Morrisen Quimosing
Mindanao State UniversityGeneral Santos City’s Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department, under the College of Engineering, recently organized a hands-on workshop with the theme “Electrify Your Mind: Sparking Creativity in Arduino for Aspiring Voltage Visionaries.” This workshop aimed to equip the senior high school students with the essential skills in Arduino programming and electronics.
The workshop, also known as ArduiKnoWS, received enthusiastic participation from students eager to explore electronics and programming. Zyan Bisnar, one of the participants, shared his insights on the experience. “The overall experience of ArduiKnoWS was very good.” Bisnar said. “In addition, napakaganda ng accommodations ng facilitators
and ang space na ginaconductan ng activity is very comfortable. It is one of the best workshops I have participated gid.”
Bisnar further emphasized the benefits of the workshop in his academic journey. “The ArduiKnoWS really helped us with our research as we have innovation as the category for our research gid.” He explained. “From the circuit diagram up to coding became possible due to the workshop.”
At ArduiKnoWS, participants gained hands-on experience in coding, circuit design, and project implementation which utilizes Arduino. They were introduced to fundamental programming languages such as C; a general purpose language that provides low-level access to system memory. Participants also learned
how to program various sensors and displays. Moreover, they developed proficiency in writing code and explored software tools like the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE), which helps programmers develop software efficiently.
Furthermore, workshops like this not only benefit individuals but also contribute to the progression of our society. By equipping students with skills in electronics and programming, these initiatives serve as a catalyst for the advancement of technology and innovation. Students learn from these workshops not just as consumers of technology but as innovators; ready to contribute to the development of their communities.
A quantitative study by Indrinal (2022) which assessed the awareness and computer literacy of
senior high school students found that students need more exposure in computer fields including database management, web page design, and computer programming. These findings suggest that there should be enhancement programs, like ArduiKnoWS, to improve students’ computer literacy.
The success of ArduiKnoWS reflects the commitment of the department in providing practical learning experiences for its students. Through initiatives like this, the department continues to nurture the next generation of innovators, preparing them to succeed in a continuously evolving technological world.
Are We Prepared, Henerals?: General Santos City’s State of “Preparedness”
by Renzienne Gecca Bago
Just last 2023, General Santos City experienced a series of tremors, causing great damages not only to the city’s infrastructures and buildings but also to the Henerals’ psychological well-being. Some citizens claim to be “traumatized” by the quakes that had them on the watch for every slight shake of the ground from time to time. One of the most unforgettable disasters from last year was the 6.8 magnitude
earthquake which hit the city mid November. According to reports, the death toll rose to 3, while 326 people were injured. Aside from these, many suffered from panic attacks.
Apart from earthquakes, it is also not new to the residents that the city’s streets are always flooded during rainy seasons. Due to either clogged or overflowing sewers and drainages causing high risk for road accidents. While this situation is manageable, cases of fire incidents are also rampant within the cramped
areas of the city, especially during the peak of El Nino. With the fire engulfing properties and houses; residents are left with ashes of their valuables.
Some Henerals are well aware of where the city is geographically situated and what the city is susceptible to. Most are also briefed on emergency procedures in case disaster hits. As practiced in schools which implemented drills for students in case of emergencies such as; fire drills and earthquake drills. Despite
these actions, does merely practicing the “duck, cover, and hold” and “stop, drop and roll’’ make us prepared enough for when an unpredictable catastrophe strikes?
Despite the government’s efforts and preparations for possible disasters that may hit the city in the future, it is no doubt that no one will be prepared enough when the unimaginable happens. Disasters do not warn us, they happen in the most unpredictable times. Preparedness does not come as
a formality, not a ritual, nor is it a mere practice. One must know the ways of how to prepare before, how to stay safe during, and how to survive after tragedy. In reality, the emergency drills we learned from school will not always be applied when adrenaline, panic, and instinct take over ourselves during a state of emergency. Therefore, each Heneral must not only be aware but rather be prepared and on the watch for when disaster comes to surprise us without notice.

by Rowanne Jaurdian
Fostering Equity During MSU Gensan Intramurals
by Blessy Grace Punay
MSU Gensan is known for its positive attributes, the quality of education and competitive students. During the intramurals, the inclusion of varsity players in the games has ignited debates within the university community. While some argue that their participation enhances the competitiveness and quality of the games, others have protest that it overpowers the spirit of non-varsity students to actively engage and showcase their talents.
Others that advocate for allowing varsity players to participate often desire to earn such superiority and merit. The presence of varsity players increases the level of competition, providing a more competitive and tougher experience for all participants. Additionally, the contact with the trained players gave highlight for the opportunity for nonvarsity students to learn and improve their skills.
However, there were arguments to consider alongside these consideration. Allowing varsity players to join the games could create a huge difference of playing experience, discouraging participation from non-varsity students who feel that they have little chance of success. This can lead to feelings of inferiority and frustration among the majority of students who participate in intramurals primarily for enjoyment and solely for participation.
Moreover, the purpose of intramurals develops beyond the competitions. It serves as a platform to encourage inclusivity, teamwork, and sportsmanship among all members of the university community. By promoting the involvement of varsity players, there is a risk of neglecting these values and creating a stereotype of superiority in the sports field.
To address these concerns and to showcase the true spirit of intramurals, MSU Gensan should consider implementing guidelines to promote equity and fairness. One approach could involve establishing separate divisions specifically for varsity players and alongside departments of graduated varsity athletes, allowing them to compete against one another while providing opportunities for non-varsity students to shine in their respective divisions.
In conclusion, the participation of varsity players in MSU Gensan Intramurals sparks competitiveness however it triggers negative feelings such as inferiority. Assessing the role of varsity players and imposing guidelines to promote fairness and inclusivity, MSU Gensan can guarantee an intramurals that promotes teamwork and uplifts the spirit of the entire university community.
Redefining Philippine Sports: Recognizing Athletes Beyond the Hoops
Growing up in a typical Filipino household, you have probably seen your dad getting excited about his favorite NBA or PBA team on TV, watched spirited neighborhood games or also known as “liga” in your barangays, and seen basketball rings even in small areas. That’s how much Filipinos love basketball. But isn’t it about time to give other sports the same importance as basketball?
With basketball being the most popular sport in the country, the pressure and expectations weighing on the national basketball team are often deemed unrealistically high. Yet it’s noteworthy to highlight the extensive support and attention it garners from Filipinos globally, corporate sponsors, and governmental entities alike. Yet as our focus remains predominantly on basketball, we risk overlooking the immense potential Filipinos possess in various other sports.
Looking back, several notable Filipinos have showcased significant talent in national sports less popular than basketball. While many athletes have already excelled on the global stage, there remains a noticeable lack of sustainable support. While government efforts are moving in the right direction to help our athletes, Pinoy athletes still need more than that. It’s up to us, the Filipino people, to step up. Let’s stand by our athletes, cheering them on whether they win or lose, just like we do for Gilas Pilipinas.
On the other hand, this isn’t about basketball versus all other sports. Rather, it’s about ensuring that each sport receives equitable recognition and support. It’s not a matter of lacking skills among our athletes, but rather acknowledging the inherent glory and significance of every sport.
We aren’t short in passion or talent. We just need to extend the same level of love and support to other sports as we do with basketball. This way, we can showcase the exceptional abilities of Filipinos in every sport, and ultimately, everyone succeeds.

“Nasa Isip Mo Lang ‘Yan!”: A Call to Prioritize the Mental Health of Athletes by
Junna May Capili
Sports are competitive activities that require talent and physical effort and typically are regulated by rules or customs. It has long been an aspect of great public interest and is now once more relevant to both public health and the lives of many people. Athletes undergo an extensive amount of training in order to win, but how can they succeed if they are also fighting unseen battles within themselves?
Athletes are frequently dealing with mental health problems. Behind every success of these athletes there lies countless setbacks and obstacles in every step. Lucky are those who didn’t get to experience performance pressure, the fear of not living up to everyone’s expectations, physical injuries, unending criticisms, and feeling lost. These are some of the many experiences athletes face, which can lead to the feeling of stress and anxiety, or worse depression.
The brain-mind-body-society connections are frequently interconnected. The world of competitive sports espouses the belief that these physically-fit individuals are also equally mentally tough, which feeds the stigma associated with seeking psychological assistance. The stigma faced by Filipino athletes is worsened by the lack of resources for mental health care; just 3-5 % of all medical spending in the nation is allocated to mental health, meaning that out-of-pocket expenses are significant. There is also a dearth of mental health providers and facilities in the nation; for every 100,000 inhabitants, there are only 0.52, 052, and 0.03, respectively, psychologists, psychiatric hospital beds, and community-based mental health institutions.
Communicating your struggles is rather a sign of strength, not weakness. Mental health issues should be seen as equally significant as physical ones. These are also like physical sickness that if not treated immediately, it will deteriorate. Pretending there isn’t an issue will not and never be the solution. To deal, heal, and go on, you have to accept the problem. A better environment will result from acknowledging the significance of mental health, particularly for these athletes who continue to live in the shadows due to these stigmas.
As we rally for triumphs on the field, let us champion a culture that values the psychological resilience of our sports heroes. By breaking down stigma, and implementing supportive measures, we can ensure that the pursuit of victory is accompanied by a commitment to the enduring mental health of these exceptional athletes. Because, in the end, it’s not just about what’s on the scoreboard, it’s about the well-being of the individuals who bring the game to life.
breaststroke, and 100-meter individual medley. Notably, both Camacho and Erni, along with Heart Rola and Kat Tumala, also secured a silver medal in the 4x25-meter Relay event.
This maxim proves true in the case of the unstoppable SHS legends or known as the youngsters that they’re not called LEGENDS for nothing.
Just like a Butterfly: Athlete’s Metamorphosis
all remarkable transformation and soaring milestones begin with a time of humble origins and tranquil development.
In our odyssey in the sports industry, where champions are born and legacies are written, every athlete embarks on a journey akin to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to a delicate butterfly.
From the days where the first spark of interest and passion happened, to the first step as a humble caterpillar, crawling through the moments with dreams tucked away like treasures within its tiny heart, to pursuing one’s talent through rigorous training and commitment, and into a delicate butterfly spreading its wings for the first time, with passion and a heart of an eloquent athlete. The gradual transformation of a butterfly symbolizes the timeless concept that
Inspiring are the parallels between the athlete’s path and the metamorphosis of a butterfly are both. The earliest days is where the caterpillar starts to wander around and explore things, just like the aspiring athletes seeing and are attracted to the possible things awaiting for them in the sporting tapestry, carrying the hopeful ambitions close to their heart. These enthusiasts discover their love for a particular discipline, laying the foundation for what will later become a profound connection to their chosen sport.
They weave their dreams and go further into commitment as they let their hearts lead them, and they enter what we refer to as the cocoon phase. The unwavering pursuit of excellence, skill improvement, and the supportive embrace of trainers
and coaches are features associated with this stage. Similar to a caterpillar creating a cocoon for protection and metamorphosis, athletes dedicate themselves to the discipline needed in order to achieve their greatest potential.
The butterfly-in-making inside the cocoon experiences pushback and struggles against the cocoon. It may seem negative, but they are only gaining strength and filling its wings with blood. It was the struggle that made it stronger. Similar to the moments when an athlete’s dedication is tested because of challenges and setbacks they have undergone. These are the activities that have molded the genuine faith and perseverance required to pursue success.
Following is the emergence, the athlete’s transformation into an experienced contestant. They expanded their horizons to compete after honing their skills and building their resilience. Like the different patterns and colors of a butterfly’s wings, their experiences in the cocoon have not only helped them to adapt to the needs of the sport but have also given them a unique personality and flair.
by Junna May Capili
However, we all grew differently from each other. Some are butterflies who don’t know where to fly. Some grew as butterflies, but failed to appreciate their own beauty. Some were even insecure by the beauty of everyone around. Some failed to fly. Some failed to grow. But, we humans are alike from butterflies not because we are both part of nature. Butterfly effect, a theory in which a small action can cause a large change further down the road. Remember that even the smallest butterflies can create the strongest winds.
Just like a butterfly, we may not see our own, but others can. Just like a butterfly, we all have the ability to grow. Even if it is in the deepest shadows, when we emerge, we can spread our wings and experience countless possibilities with passion. The story of the athlete, starting as a caterpillar, is a testament to the transformative power of sports, reminding us all that within every aspiring sports enthusiast lies the potential for a magnificent metamorphosis. Spread your wings, little butterflies!
I tried to scream, but my head was underwater
by Artxinia Mejia
Splashes of water fall from the brims of her hair. The endless drizzles of such drips down her skin like how a rain falls from the skies. Countless times of training sculptured her to be one of the flows of water. The silver-like beams of light give shine to her and her hard work. With great exhibition of persistence and diligence, Jazmine Kaye Camacho is her name.
“Why that?” a question always asked to every athlete, “Why not?” one athlete answered. But every athlete has a story, a story that keeps them striving for their goals and aspirations. As early as the age of 7, Jazmine shared that her parents recommended the sport swimming as her extracurricular activity. After thinking about her parents’ what if, she started her journey in swimming in the year 2012. In 2013, she entered her competitive swimming world. Her strong grit and determination to be better gave her the experience she can be proud of.
The pathway that she takes right now in order to reach her dreams, comes with the bumps and ramps along the road. Jazmine indicated the challenges she faced as a student-athlete: time management, lack of support, pressure and expectations. She mentioned that she is aware that she must balance her time as a student-athlete but due to her everyday training, exhaustion takes over her that delays her other tasks. Given every athlete’s hard work and passion, receiving a little
to no support from the athletes’ schools and LGU makes Jazmine’s heart is with these players as she experienced this herself. With the undying support of everyone in her life, she persevered. Another obstacle that she had to overcome was the pressure and expectations she faces as a student-athlete; as being one needs to know how to balance their sport and academics. When you finally know and have the courage to dance in the rain instead of waiting for it to stop, that is when you know you can endure it all.
As a legend, Jazmine showcased her talents and skills while also illuminating good sportsmanship. The legends had the opportunity to have Jazmine to be a representative of Siklab in swimming for Mindanao State UniversityGSC Intramurals 2022 and 2023. In Intramurals 2022, Jazmine bagged 5 golds and 2 silver medals and 4 golds and 2 silver medals in Intramurals 2023.
“Most memorable experience nako sa swimming is everytime siguro na mag qualify ko sa regionals ug nationals” [My most memorable experience I have in swimming was probably the times where I qualified for regional and national competitions]. The fruit of her blood, sweat, and tears of endless training was evident. Jazmine was able to participate in regionals and national competitions and bagged the following awards: a total of 8 golds, 6 silvers, and 3 bronze medals
in her competitions in Soccsksargen Regional Athletic Association (SRAA) from 2016 to 2020. In Batang Pinoy Mindanao Leg 2018, she seized a gold, 2 silvers, and 2 bronze medals. In Batang Pinoy Nationals, she captured the silver medal in relay category and she also secured the bronze medal in medley relay in Palarong Pambansa 2018.
This all started when she said yes to her mother’s suggestion of picking swimming. She now made a foundation and brought her name up in the field. All because of, not only her family’s, coach’s, and friends’ support, but also Jazmine herself. The screams from her inner self telling she is tired and wants to stop, was now replaced by her triumph shout of win and everyone’s cry of joy.

(SWP) nito lamang taong 2023.
