It is a word used to describe figures such as our department mascot, a mighty dragon—one that seems indestructible and undefeatable. Dragons appear in mythologies from various corners of the world and are known to rule their realms. Truly, something you would deem a legend.

Mindanao State University - General Santos City officially closed its Intramurals 2024 alongside the 51st founding anniversary celebration at the University Gymnasium on October 15, where the Senior High School (SHS) Legends proudly secured eighth place overall.
The gymnasium resonated with cheers as the closing program kicked off with a parade of banners representing all colleges and departments.
Dr. Norman Ralph Isla, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, praised the event, stating, “If not one of the best, it is the best in the region.”
He also announced that October 16 would be a rest day for administrators and staff, while October 16-20 would serve as an official academic break for faculty and students.
As the festivities drew to a close, students from various colleges and departments eagerly anticipated an exciting lineup of performances during Students’ Night.

This year’s event marked a significant milestone for the department, demonstrating that, despite being the youngest participants, they possess remarkable talent and resilience.

Foundation Anniversary celebration
Mindanao State UniversityGeneral Santos City (MSUGSC) officially kickstarted its 51st foundation anniversary celebration and Intramurals 2024 at the university quadrangle on October 10, 2024, with the theme “Advancing Academic Excellence and Global Competitiveness, Leading a Transformative, Resilient, National Peace University.”
The opening program began with a parade competition featuring the College of Education (COEd), College of Engineering (COE), College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH), College of Agriculture (COA), College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM), College of Fisheries (COF), Senior High School Department (SHS), School of Graduate Studies (SGS), College of Law (COL), College of Medicine (COM), and the debut of the Institute of Islamic, Arabic, and International Studies (IIAIS).
Following the parade, Supreme Student Council (SSC) President Leonard Tucjayao delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the university’s role as a transformative and resilient institution that sets the standard for national development and peacebuilding.
“It speaks to our university’s evolving role as an institution of higher learning that is not only committed to academic excellence but also deeply rooted in the vision of fostering peace and unity,” Tucjayao stressed.
Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Norman Ralph Isla shared his thoughts, highlighting the unique significance of the university’s annual intramurals.
After Isla’s speech, the departments showcased their respective banners and college shirts, which were part of the novelty award competitions.
Subsequently, the Mass Dance competition began, showcasing the unique colors and talents of each department through spectacular performances.
The program continued with the highly anticipated torchlighting ceremony, highlighting the unified spirit of MSUGenSan, followed by a fireworks display that surprised and delighted everyone, prompting cheers of excitement.
Legends emerge 2nd runner up at Intramurals 2024 Mass Dance Competition
The University Quadrangle buzzed with excitement as students from various departments showcased their talent in the mass dance competition on the first day of Intramurals 2024, this October 8.
Every year, the Mass Dance Competition stands out as one of the most anticipated events during the intramurals.
The competition highlights the spirit of unity and friendly competition among departments as they battle for supremacy in this year’s events.
In a remarkable display of talent and flair, Legends finish second runner up in the said competition, wherein their vibrant costumes and dynamic choreography captivated the audience, reflecting their dedication to the craft.
The Legends, known for their strong reputation in the event, delivered a well-coordinated performance that highlighted their teamwork and creativity.
Though unable to attain the crown, the Legends remained determined to excel in the upcoming events, with their sights set on securing a strong overall standing in this year’s competition.

Intramurals 2024 Musical Night set for a spectacular evening of musical performances, the third day of the Intramurals 2024 continued with its much anticipated Musical Night on October 12, 2024, at the University Gymnasium.
The event showcased diverse talents and vocal prowess, with participants competing in the Vocal Solo, Vocal Duet, Sing and Dance Quartet, and the Acoustic Band competitions.

Legends celebrate resounding triumph at Intramurals 2024 Musical Night
Gymnasium as the highly anticipated Musical Night showcased the extraordinary talents of the Legends.
Ella Loable (12 STEM - Euclid), with her powerful rendition of the Visayan classic “Matud Nila,” clinched the fourth runnerup title for the Vocal Solo Category; meanwhile, Vicente Recla III (11 STEM - Ganymede) and Lovely Arabit (12 STEMEuler), earned the eighth runner-up title for the Vocal Duet Category, with their sweet and modern version of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.”
Pauleen Go (12 HUMSS - Comte), Hannah Dacules (12 STEM - Euler), along with Arabit and Loable, did not falter as they
claimed the second runner-up title in the Sing and Dance Quartet Competition for their harmonious medley of “Woman Like Me,” “Wings,” and “I’m In Love With a Monster.”
Furthermore, the department’s acoustic band composed of Jana Nadela (11 STEM - Titan), Cris Panganiban (11 STEM - Ganymede), Carlos Miñoza (12 STEMEuclid), Ethan Mernilo (12 STEM - Euclid), Zedrick Concepcion (12 STEM - Euler), and Elijah Ledesma (12 STEM - Gauss), with their soulful rendition of “Hallelujah,” “Antukin,” “Upuan,” and “Bulong,” proudly claimed the fourth runner-up trophy for the Acoustic Band Competition.

Siklab soars high at Intramurals 2024 Literary Night
Students across various colleges flocked the University Gymnasium as the fifth day of the Intramurals 2024 set the mood and tone for a night full of words and wisdom with its Literary Night last October 14, 2024.
The said event featured performances from each college representative for Madulang Sabayang Pagbigkas, Cosplay Superstar, and TheaterAthlon—a newly introduced event.
Additionally, the winners of the Gender and Development (GAD) Film, Collaborative Desktop Publishing, Extemporaneous Speaking, Debate, Dagliang Talumpati, Declamation, and Improvised Duo were awarded on the same night.
The Senior High School (SHS) Legends climbed their way to the top as they won several awards in the aforementioned categories.
Carrying the flame and wits in every argument, the debate team composed of Jhersey Guazo (11 STEM - Ganymede), Achilles Peña (12 STEM - Euclid), and Precious Malobo (12 STEM - Euclid), brought home the first ever championship crown for the SHS Department for the Parliamentary Debate Championship, wherein Guazo was awarded as the Best Finals Speaker.
Hizam Tuan (12 ABM - Ford), claimed a silver medal as he won first runnerup for the Extemporaneous Speaking competition, while the Siklab’s crew of cosplayers also won first runner-up for the Cosplay Superstar competition, wherein Keisha Pantoja (12 STEM - Euler) and Jaelah Pupos (11 STEM - Callisto) were handed special awards as Best Cosplayers.
Furthermore, Lorrainne Jayag (12 ABMFord) also won a bronze medal for ranking

second runner-up in the Declamation contest. The Legends’ Madulang Sabayang Pagbigkas team climbed their way to the podium and clinched the second runner-up title for their performed piece entitled “Panaghoy ni Maria,” inspired by “Pieta,” the Michelangelo sculpture classic.
With their spectacular reenactment performance of the Tony-award-winning musical “Hairspray,” the Legends took home the third runner-up title for the Theater-Athlon contest; meanwhile, the Himig Isko-led SHS team for the Collaborative Desktop Publishing competition ranked as third runnerup in the said showcase of journalistic prowess. Moreover, Sharie Colano (12 STEM - Euclid) won as fifth runner up for the Dagliang Talumpati competition, and the pair composed of Leonald Gonzales (12 ABM - Ford) and Krizha Manuel (12 HUMSS - Comte) paved their way to clinch the fifth runner-up title.
In addition to Siklab’s array of winnings, the Legends also took home sixth runnerup for both the Mural Painting and Gender and Development (GAD) Film, wherein the crew of Siklab filmmakers won the Best Music Design for the GAD Film Festival.

Bawat taon, inaabangan ng lahat ng mga estudyante ng Mindanao State University ang isa sa mga pinakamasayang parte ng kanilang buhayeskwela—ang MSU Intramurals. Lahat ay talaga namang pinaghahandaan ang mga kaganapan para sa linggong puno ng isports, kompetisyon at mga tanghalan. Ngayong taon, ay ipinagdiriwang ang 51st Founding Anniversary ng pamantasan kasabay ng pagdaraos ng Intramurals 2024. Ito ay nakakuha ng atensyon hindi lamang ng mga estudyante ng MSU, maging ng mga iilan ding mga paaralan. Ang MSU Intramurals ay hindi lamang tungkol sa sports at kompetisyon; ito rin ay isang pagkakataon para ipakita ng bawat kolehiyo ang kanilang talento at pagkakaisa. Mula sa mga matinding laban sa basketball, volleyball, at iba’t ibang sports, hanggang sa mga masayang dance and musical competition, ang Intrams sa MSU ay tunay na selebrasyon ng kakayahan at talento ng bawat MSUan. Dagdag pa dito ang mga inaabangang literary events at nakakatindig balahibong mga tagisan ng talino. Hindi lamang mga atleta at mga kalahok ang bida rito, kundi pati na rin ang mga manonood na walang sawang sumusuporta sa kanilang mga kolehiyo. Ang bawat araw ng Intramurals ay puno ng sigaw, tawa, at sigla—isang linggo ng walang kapantay na kasiyahan sa loob ng MSU.
Ngunit, hindi makukumpleto ang Intramurals kung wala ang tinatawag na “bardagulan.” Sa bawat laro at kompetisyon, umiinit ang labanan—literally at figuratively. Ang bawat kolehiyo ay may kanya-kanyang gimik, diskarte, at palaban na mga sigaw para ipakita ang kanilang suporta sa kanilang mga departamento. Hindi maipagkakaila na sa kabila ng pagkakaroon ng kaunting “bardagulan” ng mga departamento, ay mas namumutawi ang samahan ng bawat isa at nagpapakita ng pagkakakilanlan bilang MSUan. Hindi kayang tumbasan ng ibang paaralan ang sigla, saya, at pagkakaisa na dala ng MSU Intramurals. Glamour Sees Glitches in an Iridescent

Glamour, elegance, and beauty filled the University Gymnasium as eight candidates strove to take the title of Miss MSU 2024 on October 10, 2024. Miss MSU is a highly anticipated event during the institution’s Intramurals, showcasing not only the candidates’ grace but also their wits and talents. With this year’s theme being “Miss MSU: The Iridescent Beauty of Peace,” we cannot sideline the fact that the event, which should center on celebrating beauty, had its own ugly occurrences.
In the Question and Answer (Q&A) portion of the event, a pivotal moment in any pageant was marred by significant oversight. This segment tests the candidates’ ability to deliver spontaneous yet intelligent and sound responses under pressure and scrutiny. This not only tests the candidates’ wits and critical thinking skills, it also serves as a reminder that, as a candidate partaking in the most anticipated event—Miss MSU—it should be a given that the Question and Answer (Q&A) portion must be answered correctly and directly to the point, tailor-fitted to the given question.
However, the top five contestants were given the same question without being isolated from each other’s answers, something that is rarely seen in most pageants, leaving the crowd in awe and confusion. Without measures like earphones and earmuffs to prevent hearing the earlier responses, the last candidate had the advantage of time to prepare their response, creating an uneven and biased playing field. The first candidate was at a disadvantage, leaving them in a tight and pressuring situation. This oversight compromised the integrity of the competition. In a segment where everyone’s capability to think on their feet is being tested, it must be equitable to each candidate. They must be given the same privilege as the others, allowing each participant to experience the same pressure.
Furthermore, the spirit of cheering and supporting in this year’s pageant was also an issue. It is evident that an electrifying competitive spirit marked last year’s pageant. Each department rallied behind its favorite contestants with fervor, creating a vibrant environment that celebrated not only individual talents but also a collective sense of community. This enthusiasm fostered connections among supporters and highlighted the

diverse backgrounds of the participants, encapsulating the essence of what the Miss MSU pageant aims to represent. Contrasting with this legacy, this year’s event has shifted towards selective cheers. Supporters seem more inclined to focus their enthusiasm on specific contestants rather than embracing all candidates. While this may stem from a desire to cultivate a respectful and peaceful atmosphere, it inadvertently undermines the very principles that the pageant stands for.
Despite the magnificence of Miss MSU 2024, these underlying issues overshadowed what should have been a celebration of talent, wits, and peace. The
pageant serves as a platform not only to honor individual achievements but also to foster school spirit and camaraderie among various departments. As such, it is essential to ensure that future Miss MSU pageants prioritize fairness and transparency. By addressing concerns regarding the improvement of the Q&A segment and encouraging more open and collective cheering, the pageant can truly claim its status as an iridescent celebration of peace.

The F o n t That Got Away
Collaborative desktop publishing during Intramurals 2024 promised to be an exciting test of skill, creativity, and speed. My team and I were tasked with creating a comprehensive four-page newsletter within three hours—a challenging feat requiring focus and quick decision-making. From the editorial pieces to the layout, we knew every aspect would be judged. Naturally, we prepared with the best tools and strategies, including carefully chosen typefaces that reflected our vision.
But as it turns out, we had forgotten one key element: a crystal ball.
While setting up for the event, the organizers informed us that external fonts were strictly prohibited. This came as an unexpected bombshell. The guidelines, adapted from the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC), gave no hint that external typefaces were not allowed. And why would they? After all, the NSPC permits external typefaces, so who could have predicted this sudden restriction? Not us, unfortunately.
The organizers conducted checks on participants’ devices to ensure compliance, and we obediently deleted our font files. We then scrambled to rework our designs using the built-in fonts available in Adobe InDesign. For those unfamiliar with design, this may seem like a minor inconvenience. But for designers, typography is more than just picking a font; it sets the tone, creates a hierarchy of information, and establishes the identity of the page. When you have planned your entire layout around specific typefaces, being forced to change your approach at the last minute is no small issue.
Nonetheless, we took the hit in stride.
With three hours to complete the task, we made the best of the built-in fonts and pushed through. We assumed that this rule applied to everyone equally and that we were all now working under the same limitations.
But then the results were posted. To our surprise, it became clear that some showcased entries featured fonts that were not part of InDesign’s built-in selection. These typefaces, which we cross-checked, were not available in the default options. It seemed that while some participants had deleted their external fonts, others had managed to sneak theirs in. A violation of the rules? Maybe. An inconsistency in enforcement? Definitely. This frustration does not stem from pettiness but from a sense of fairness. Time and creativity are the most valuable resources in a fast-paced competition like this, and both were compromised when we had to suddenly adjust our designs. Fonts are not just decorations; they are integral to how information is conveyed and how a layout is perceived. The participants who used their custom typefaces had an advantage in sticking with their original design vision, while the rest of us spent precious minutes reworking ours.
This issue was not unforeseeable. As mentioned earlier, the event’s guidelines were adapted from the NSPC’s rules, where external fonts are allowed. It was not unreasonable for us to expect that the same rules would apply here. If there had been clear notice about font restrictions ahead of time, we could have adapted our designs accordingly from the start. But there was not. Instead, we had to change course on the day of the event, only to find out afterward that the rules hadn’t been uniformly enforced.
We do not raise these concerns to stir the pot but to advocate for fairness. As participants, we followed the rules
given to us, even when they changed unexpectedly. All we ask is that future competitions apply those rules equally to everyone. If fonts don’t matter as much as overall design and content, then let that be stated clearly. If they do, then enforce the rule uniformly. It’s as simple as that.
Looking back, there is a mix of disappointment and hope. Disappointment because we put in the extra effort to follow the rules only to find out that it may not have mattered. But there is also hope that this feedback will lead to a more transparent and fair competition in the future. After all, the spirit of these events is to challenge ourselves creatively and collaboratively. But creativity can only truly shine when everyone is on equal footing. To the organizers and the judging panel, we urge you to take these concerns seriously. Let’s ensure that future participants do not face the same frustration and confusion. In a creative competition, we should focus on content, design, and collaboration—not on worrying about who’s getting away with using forbidden fonts.

It is a word used to describe figures such as our department mascot, a mighty dragon—one that seems indestructible and undefeatable. Dragons appear in mythologies from various corners of the world and are known to rule their realms. Truly, something you would deem a legend.
But at Siklab, the student body gives a whole new meaning to the word; they’re not only legends, but Siklab Legends.
In the recently concluded Intramurals, the Senior High School displayed dedication with unwavering zeal and eagerness. Despite the smaller population of the department compared to other colleges, 330 Legends continued to give a good fight.
The MSU campus is a witness to the hard work of each of these students: spending restless nights to create props, pouring all their energy into practices, and enduring long training sessions. Each conquered their battles, whether on stage, on the playing field, or on paper. There is no doubt that they brought honor to Siklab with their wit, athleticism, and creativity.
With all their best efforts, the Legends secured 8th place overall. A position that may seem low to others, but is a significant achievement for Siklab, especially after overcoming numerous challenges to perform their very best. Renowned legends may be indestructible and undefeated by their competitors, but Siklab Legends do not measure their competence based on others; they measure it from within. Though the demanding nature of the intramurals tries to shake the foundations of their passion, their determination remains strong and indomitable. Other colleges may have defeated Siklab, but the Legends’ courage to represent their department remains unyielding in the face of fear and failure.
With emerging talks about the Intramurals 2024 being the last competitive participation of Siklab in this yearly event, this year’s achievement is truly one for the books. It’s one worth remembering. The fire within the Legends will remain ardent and fueled. Until all things are certain, this will stand as Siklab’s last silakbo.

Yet, through relentless practice and competition, she discovered a passion she never knew she had. This journey resonated with Precious, who noted, “Although I was a Siklab Oration Debate Society (SODS) member last year, I never
challenges loomed large.
As they celebrate their victory among 327 other competitors, their achievement serves as a testament that age is no barrier to success. This young team has proven that determination and passion can lead to remarkable accomplishments, inspiring others to find their voices and make an impact, regardless of their age.

6 Gold and 4 Silver Medals
Earning Siklab Senior High 6 gold and 4 silver medals, Gabriel Marco Acas and Samantha Erni displayed impeccable skills during the Mindanao State University – General Santos City Intramurals 2024 Swimming Men and Women Tournament held at LC5 Farm and Resort in General Santos City last October 13, 2024.
Acas predominated the Butterfly Men 25m, Freestyle Men 25m and 50m, and Individual Medley, making him the most valuable player for the Legends Aquatics Team, with 4 gold and 1 silver medals.
“Honestly, I felt kind of shocked because I didn’t really get to practice that much because of activities that I had to do in school, but aside from that, I feel very happy with the results because I faced all of the struggles that I had to endure during practices,” said the 5-foot-5 swimmer.
Simultaneously, Samantha secured 2 gold medals for Backstroke Women 25m and 50m and 3 silver medals for Butterfly Women 25m and 50m and Individual Medley.
“I feel very grateful and happy. And despite swimming being an individual sport, I owe most of my success to my teammates because of their trust in me and my role as their team captain,” said Erni, the team captain of Legends Aquatics.
Legends Clinch Thrilling Victory over Asteegs in Women’s Volleyball
With sharp attacks and clutch blocks, the Senior High School Legends clawed their way to a razor-thin 25-23, 25-23 victory against the College of Engineering Asteegs in a nail-biting Women’s Volleyball Match during the 51st Intramurals of Mindanao State University – General Santos City on October 13, 2024.
“Mas meron kaming communication nung nag-start na ang game, kaya umangat ang mood ng lahat,” shared Meaganne Luga, one of the Legends’ team players stating that strong communication allowed the team to capitalize on several errors made by the Asteegs, helping the Legends secure the first set.
“Nag-down ang mood namin when Engineering took a 7-point lead,” Luga recounted a quick timeout and a shift in energy helped the team regain focus.
As the game tightened, Sophia Javellana’s fiery aces became a
turning point, narrowing the Asteegs’ lead and shifting momentum in favor of the Legends.
With a hard-fought and resilient performance, the Legends secured their first victory of the tournament in their final match.

Alcoseba, Crowned As Board 1 MVP At Intramurals 2024 Women’s Chess Competition

Aboard Board 1, Monaliza Alcoseba from Senior High School “Legends” was in top form, stole the spotlight by winning the prestigious Board 1 MVP title through claiming victories against six out of eight colleges in the Intramurals 2024 Chess Tournament Women’s Division held on October 11-12 at Regional Science Research Center, Mindanao State University.
Alcoseba’s fierce determination burned throughout the matches as she fought legendarily and won against College of Social Sciences and Humanities “Vanguards,” College of Business Administration and Accountancy “Tycoons,” College of Engineering “Asteegs,” Institute of Islamic and Arabic Studies “Tribals,” College of Fisheries “Anglers,” and College of Agriculture “Reapers,” clinching a remarkable total of 6 points. Her breakthrough victory in the head-to-head match against College of Engineering’s Board 1 player not only tied her for total points but also edged out Asteegs for the Board 1 MVP title.
Through the lead of Alcoseba’s stellar play, the Women’s Chess Team of the Senior High School Department sealed the 7th Runner-up spot in the overall ranking in the Women’s Division. Fiona Faye Songcog supported her on Board 2, who contributed 2 points, Karin May Hamid on Board 3, and Nur Ayesha Macatimbol on Board 4 each added 1 point to the team’s total, capping off an overall score of 10 points.
The Siklab Legends Men’s Chess Team also showcased exceptional performance that secured a notable total of 15.5 points, which made their mark as the 6th Runner-up in the overall ranking. Randler Xagne Basalo on Board 3 led the team with 5.5 points, Jannem Bangiban on Board 1 added 4 points, while Joshua Caleb Pagalan and Joseph Keith S. Galanta earned 3.5 and 2.5 points on Boards 2 and 4, respectively.
Alcoseba’s dominant run alongside the combined efforts and sharp minds of the Men and Women’s Team of the Siklab Legends showcased their strategic prowess and undeniable skills as a team. Their fiery performance throughout the competition proved that the Legends continue to burn bright even on the chessboard.

Bation delivered an intense performance in her first match. Facing an opponent from the College of Education Mentors, Bation dominated the bout with precisiondriven movements, earning her a place in the championship round.
The pressure mounted as Bation faced off against an opponent from the College of Agriculture Reapers in the final match. Despite the heated atmosphere, Bation demonstrated determination and skill, ultimately winning by a 12-point lead and clinching the gold medal for the Siklab Team.
“I felt pressured during the championship round because it was the fight for the gold,” Bation shared after her victory. “But after the match, I was really happy because all the weeks of training were worth it. Despite the fact that almost all of us had fevers before game day, we managed to push through”, she added.

While achievements on the field can be exhilarating, the real triumph lies in developing strong character and camaraderie among players. This is where the Filipino concept of “walang hilaan pababa” meaning “no pulling each other down” comes into play, offering a framework for an environment of support and respect.
Sportsmanship is more than just a word. It embodies the principles of integrity, respect, and empathy.
In this year’s Intramurals 2024, these qualities are essential for nurturing young athletes into wellrounded individuals. By introducing the concept of “walang hilaan pababa,” it reinforces that winning should never come at the expense of undermining teammates or rivals. Instead, athletes should focus on building each other up, creating a positive atmosphere where everyone can excel.
Coaches play a pivotal role in cultivating sportsmanship among young athletes. By modeling positive behavior and emphasizing the importance of respect and teamwork, coaches instill a culture where support and respect thrive. They can make players realize that their worth is not solely determined by their performance but also by their ability to uplift their peers.
