Birds of TYTO

TYTO Wetlands is named after the Eastern Grass Owl, Tyto capensis. This unique and majestic species is a nocturnal master of the wetlands. Their superior eyesight, flight capabilities and ability to walk through tall grasslands make them deadly hunters. Eastern Grass Owls camouflage their nests on the ground, making a nest chamber with a tunnel runway leading out of the tall grass. The owls range in size from 32 cm to 42 cm in height with a wingspan from 100 cm to 116 cm, comparable to the height of an average 6-year-old child.
The Raintrees of Hinchinbrook

Raintrees once dominated the Ingham streetscape and can still be seen in picturesque abundance at the local Macknade Mill. They gave shade to passengers waiting to board a steam train, a hitched horse, a tired mother and her children, or a cane cutter waiting impatiently to sign-on for the cane-cutting season. Visitors often remarked on the “magnificent raintrees,” which gave Ingham “an air of quiet dignity unique in Queensland.” In later times the removal of the raintrees was done so under community protest as they gave background to so many memories of long gone days. 15

The Sugar Industry Today

Since 1883, the local sugar industry has supported the community. One of our two mills, The Victoria Mill, stands as the largest in Australia. In the Hinchinbrook region, on average 4.5 million tonnes of sugar cane is harvested producing almost 600,000 tonnes of sugar annually. There are 60 harvesters, 27 locos (sugar cane train engines) hauling 4,200 cane bins along 558km of rail network which includes 94 cane railway bridges. The industry employs about 1,200 people throughout the year, supporting a further 100 people in secondary industries, generating approximately $300 million in gross revenue every year.

Under an Australian sun, Italian courtship and marriage traditions were transformed. Early immigrants tended to marry others from their own region. Single men often returned to Italy to find a marriage partner or sent a self-portrait home for their family to arrange a marriage. Soon however, Italian immigrants were marrying local non-Italian girls. As many more people from diverse backgrounds moved to the Hinchinbrook region, it was inevitable that new cultural values would be formed. The history of cultural adaptation and respect for traditions is one of Hinchinbrook’s greatest strengths. 16
Kreffts Short-Necked Turtle

Kreffts Short-Necked Turtles (Emydura macquarii krefftii) can be seen basking in the sunshine on a rock or paddling beneath the water, head popping up now and then, opportunistically hoping for passing insects. The traditional custodians of the land, the Nywaigi, Warrgamay and Bandjin Peoples included turtles in their diet, both marine and freshwater. The flesh was eaten roasted and the shells were used to make fishhooks. Kreffts Short-Necked Turtles can survive droughts for months by burrowing underneath the surface into the mud, only to reappear with the first storms of the wet season.

From the observation deck cast your eyes out over the canopies of raintrees and melaleucas, observe the many species that inhabit the main lagoon, follow the rich green cane fields that stretch across alluvial plains to sweeping mountain ranges or watch the daily hustle and bustle of Ingham. World War I was fought very close to home. With danger imminent, local young men joined the Militia or Citizens Military Force. The World War I local militia was a Company of the 31st Battalion, with personnel coming from Townsville, Bowen, the Burdekin, Charters Towers and Ingham. To discover the story of the 31st Battalion, Kennedy Regiment, visit the mini Military Museum, located within the Hinchinbrook Shire Library, TYTO. Piemonte to Queensland – Cesare Costanzo’s journey

The name Costanzo is common in Casale Popolo, but in Ingham, the name is only borne by two families. That one of those families is here, bears witness to the courage of Guiseppe Costanzo, who following World War I made the long journey alone to Australia in the hope that he would make enough money to raise the fares for his wife and children to join him. A living was scarcely to be had in the rural countryside surrounding Casale Popolo, a village just 14 kilometres from Conzano, in the province of Alessandria in Piemonte. By 1927, storm clouds of discontent that would lead to an unimaginable World War II were already brewing. 16 year old Cesare Costanzo found nothing to be optimistic about as his tummy rumbled and his young back strained as he carried and laid bricks. Grimly determined to better his lot, he decided to follow his father Guiseppe. Cesare followed not only in his father’s footsteps but in those who since 1891 had been leaving the harsh economic conditions of Piemonte to labour in the cane fields of tropical North Queensland. There, there were jobs to be had and money to be made. For Cesare and his family the gamble of migration paid off. He purchased a shop in the small township of Trebonne, his sister a delicatessen in Ingham and his son, in time, would become a Councillor of the Hinchinbrook Shire Council. 19

Mercer Lane

Mercer Lane houses an incredible 42 metres of mosaic art panels depicting the history of the local sugar cane industry. Local business woman Karen Venables and artist Kate Carr rallied the community together, resulting in over 3,000 locals and visitors participating in the project. The medium of mosaics was used because it can be quickly learned, and because of its association with the artwork of ancient Italy and Italians who make up a significant percentage of the local population. Lee’s Hotel

The Hotel’s location is the birthplace of the poem “A Pub without Beer” by Dan Sheahan, adapted by Gordon Parsons as “A Pub with no Beer’ sung by Slim Dusty. But the story of Lee’s Hotel centres around intrepid Chinese men and women who came to work the northern gold fields. When Rupert Lee (Snr) purchased the Day Dawn Hotel it was in such disrepair it had to be demolished. Rupert then engaged a young fledgling architect, Ian Ferrier, who became renowned for his designs which incorporated innovative adaptions to the tropical climate, to design Lee’s Hotel which opened in 1960. 20
Mario Torrisi – a gentleman of the flashing blade

It is a long time since cane cutters toiled “like heroes” “to gather in the harvest” but Mario Torrisi is determined that the unique way of life and work of the heroic cane cutter is never forgotten. Post World War II Australia experienced an economic boom and immigration was again encouraged, particularly of the Displaced Person Refugees, Italians and Spaniards. These groups were regarded as the saviours of the cane industry in a time of over full employment when it was nearly impossible to entice local young men into the cane fields. Immigrant ships plied the seas between Europe and Australia, one being the Toscana on which young Mario Torrisi travelled with little more than a suitcase and hope. After emigrating from Sicilia – Giarre province, Catania Italy, Mario arrived in Sydney in January in 1951 and by June was a ‘new chum’ cutting cane in North Queensland. Mario had a daily routine that was dirty, back breaking and even dangerous at times, and included laying the portable rail, loading the previous day’s rake of cut cane, cutting the next rake, and finally burning for the next day’s cut. By 1962 Mario was no longer a ‘new chum” cane cutter but a loco driver at Victoria Mill. There he witnessed, from another perspective, the transition from hand cutting to mechanical cutting and the final exodus of the cane cutter from the cane fields. 21

Ingham Post Office

In 1874 mail took 45 days to arrive from Brisbane, if at all, and when it arrived at the Dungeness seaport there was nobody there authorised to receive or forward it. Dissatisfaction led to a petition sent to the Post-Master General but it was only with the increased traffic on the stock route that the Lower Herbert Post and Telegraph Office was opened on the newly gazetted Town Reserve on Palm Creek in 1875. In 1935 a new post office was built. Its heritage value today is described as “one of the last generally Colonial- revival post offices in Australia”.

The Agile Wallaby joey frequently comes into the care of the Hinchinbrook Wildlife Carers. The Agile is an affectionate, inquisitive and intelligent animal. Sweet potato is a favoured treat and joeys will even learn how to open the fridge door to access them. When multiple joeys are in the care of one carer it’s common to find them all sharing the one hanging bag. All food, equipment, accommodation and veterinary care are paid for out of the pockets of the carers. Herbert River

The Herbert River, crossed twice during the Hinchinbrook Way drive is mighty when in flood, but a gentle meandering sandy river through all other times. Originating high on the Atherton Tablelands, the river flows east 150km through the rugged Herbert River Gorge and out across the floodplains providing the fertility for the Hinchinbrook region’s farming before culminating at the southern end of the Hinchinbrook Channel.

Built in 1903, the original hotel burnt down in 1928 and was rebuilt as a two storey concrete building in 1929. In the floods of 1967, over 2 metres of water flowed through the bottom rooms of the hotel, so many locals took refuge on the upper floor, where drink service was maintained! Current publican, Douglas Barrie, is a noted local historian who has researched the crash of the Texas Terror, a US Liberator Bomber, on Hinchinbrook Island in 1942.

Macknade Mill

Dominating the surrounding landscape of Macknade is the 70m high chimney stack of the Macknade Mill. A pioneering mill first established in 1874, it has the capacity to crush up to 1.82 million tonnes of cane in a season. The mill plays a vital role within the local community. Not only is it a significant local employer, but within its grounds it boasts an idyllic nine hole golf course spread amongst giant raintrees and a vibrant local bowls club.

Halifax is Queensland’s quintessential tropical heritage town nestled against the bank of the Herbert River with shady mango trees adorning the heritage streets and a backdrop of tropical mountains. The township of Halifax prospered throughout the later part of the 19th Century rivalling Ingham; however the development of a sugar tram line in the mid 1890’s from Ingham to the deep-water port of Lucinda curtailed its future expansion. Today, Halifax is still a vibrant country town with a population of 400 people, two primary schools, a diversity of businesses and a stone’s throw from some of the world’s iconic fishing destinations. 27

Victoria Mill is one of the largest sugar mills in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s chimney stacks stand at 66m and the mill is cable of processing up to 3.74 million tonnes of sugar cane annually. Having expanded cogeneration facilities to turn bagasse into electricity, the mill is not only self-sufficient but can export half of its energy produced back into the electricity grid. This creates an environmentally friendly solution, turning a waste product into a resource. 29

Mungalla Station is Australia’s most accessible and authentic Indigenous experience, a successful Indigenous enterprise, a multi-award winning tourism destination and an iconic Australian cattle station. Occupied by the Nywaigi People for over 60,000 years, Mungalla Station abounds with history. First dispersed from their land in 1860 by European settlement, they later returned to Mungalla as a safe haven under the caring eye of the station owner, later only to have a small group of them taken away and exhibited as cannibals and savages in America. In 1999 Mungalla was purchased and returned to the Nywaigi People to support and benefit their existing culture.

Located just 20 minutes south of Ingham, in an idyllic rainforest setting is Jourama Falls. The perfect destination for campers, photographers and bird lovers alike. For the swimmers, deep shaded swimming holes and shallow streams bordering the campgrounds are the perfect escape on a hot tropical day.

Surrounded by gnarled shady trees, Broadwater’s cool waters provide the perfect destination for a refreshing dip. Take your boogie boards and ride the water as it crashes over smooth rocks, build your own little private spa in the middle of the river or relax in the calm water nooks. ZOE FALLS
Immerse yourself into the calm infinity pools of Zoe Falls. It’s not fair to contrast Mulligan Falls with Zoe Falls; however it’s easily the most accessible waterfall on the island involving only a short shuttle across from Lucinda. Set high above the beach, with a deep inviting waterhole, Mulligan Falls is an ideal half day trip. 45

THORSBORNE TRAIL (3-5 days)
Hinchinbrook Island’s rugged Thorsborne Trail is one of the World’s best multi-day walking experiences. The trail traverses an incredible diversity of terrain, from rugged tropical peaks, stunning coastal beaches, rocky shorelines, melaleuca swamps and patches of eucalypts and rainforest. As the trail winds its way 32km south from Ramsay Beach to George Point it intersects many of the islands iconic destinations including Nina Peak, Zoe Bay and Mulligan Falls. For the ultimate experience walk the trail from north to south and book your boat transfers to and from Lucinda. This option delivers a stunning early morning one hour cruise of the incredibly photogenic Hinchinbrook Channel en route to Ramsay Bay. The beauty of this option is once you have finished the trail it is only a 15 minute transfer from George Point back to your transport, hot showers, hot meals and a cold brew! 46

DALRYMPLE TRACK (1 DAY)
This difficult 10km track was used by three local Indigenous groups to cross the Cardwell Range. Later transformed by early European settlers into North Queensland’s first road suitable for wheeled traffic. The stone pitched bridge still located there today at the summit of the walk is the oldest surviving example of civil engineering work on mainland North Queensland.

MT FOX
Standing tall above the surrounding eucalypt woodlands, the secluded Mount Fox crater is formed from an ancient volcano. Take the time to trek up rugged walking track to reveal spectacular views of the surrounding Kangaroo Hills and countryside. If you’re lucky enough you may even encounter the endangered Sharman’s Rock-Wallaby.

DJAGANY WALK
Starting at Wallaman Falls, the 56.8km Djagany (goanna) walk traverses an abandoned forestry trail through open forest, she-oaks and rainforest. The trail provides access to seldom visited waterfalls and river systems and is ideal for experienced bushwalkers. At 5.7 kilometres long, supported by more than 660 concrete and steel pylons and curving with the contour of the earth, the jetty is nothing short of a magnificent engineering masterpiece. It usually takes sugar about 22 minutes to travel on the conveyor belt from the on-shore storage to the end of the jetty. 2

PELOTA MANO COURT (BASQUE HANDBALL COURT)
Listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, the Pelota Mano (handball) court constructed in 1959 is a rare illustration of the presence of Basque culture in Queensland. The court comprises two reinforced concrete walls and concrete slabs on the ground and is particularly significant for its rarity as the only purpose built handball court constructed in Queensland. Time for a game of handball‌ The court is open to the public and there is no charge for use.
