鼎直壁槽型，雙立耳，四柱足，口唇折沿。頸飾夔紋，腹飾大獸面 紋，以雲雷紋填底。鼎身四隅和四面中部均起扉棱。器表發棕銹，間 露綠銹，古意盎然。內壁有簡式祭辭銘文“亞父癸”。類似徽記在商 晚期青銅器上常有出現，可參考舊金山亞洲藝術博物館Avery Brundage 舊藏銅簋（館藏編號B60B1046），當為同族器。 類似紋飾及出戟的方鼎，可見清宮舊藏小臣缶方鼎，1984年河南安陽 戚家莊東二六九墓出土的爰方鼎（《中國青銅器全集·卷二》43號）， 2003年陝西寶雞紙坊頭出土的大獸面紋銅方鼎（2003BZFM3:5）等。 方鼎是圓鼎的變體，最早出現於二裡頭。因為鑄造難度大，數量遠較 圓器稀少，代表的社會層級也就更高，廠肆素有“一方頂十圓”的說 法。賽克勒上世紀中葉購得此鼎，收錄于白格利為其撰寫的青銅器圖 錄第一輯，編號88。此書將隨鼎受予成功競拍的買家。

王國維《說盉》中認為青銅盉是盛水來調酒的容器，因 “自其形制言 之，其有梁或鋬者，所以持而荡涤之也。其有盖及细长之喙者，所以 使荡涤时酒不泛溢也。其有喙者，所以注酒于爵也。然则盉之为用， 在受尊中之酒与玄酒而和之，而注之于爵。” 这种圓腹盉多出於戰國時期。短颈广肩，有盖有流，肩上有梁，梁的 两端雕有銜環的獸首，盖的中间附有銅環三枚，作鏈扣与提梁相连。 盉腹渾厚而橫扁，当中凸起一道弦纹，其下作三蹄足；其上出鳥形 流，竖耳圆口，双翼出廓，紋飾一絲不苟，與梁上鬚眉凸目的獸首相 扣。盉身青綠，佈滿翡翠色的鏽斑，無銹處則露出濃郁的古銅色，交 錯如大千潑彩墨。提梁久經摩挲，包漿瑩潤，棱線隱起，沉秀如砂 器。 青銅盉存世不少，相似品可參看上海博物館藏戰國春成侯盉，西安大 唐西市博物館藏勾連雷紋盉，以及大英博物馆藏春秋青銅盉（編號 1912,1105.1）等等。

Having a compressed globular body raised on a high hollow foot, surmounted by a recessed neck and a flaring mouth, the main body chiseled with bands of lozenges, between three raised concentric rings and a band of lappet leaves, the neck decorated with rows of feathers alternating panels of lozenges and leave tips, the mouth incised with a running deer figure and mounted with a chain link handle.

提梁壶多用作酒器。此壶侈口長頸，鼓腹溜肩，圈足外撇。肩部設輔 首銜環一對，口沿出環一對，兩組環鈕間套有“8”字活鏈，配合最上 方雙龍銜環式樣的弧形提梁，使蓋與器身連成一體。一側蓋沿刻有回 首奔跑的小鹿，子母口上下對準，小鹿身首合併，壺與蓋方能嚴絲合 縫。 不同於多數漢代銅器素面光身，此壺布滿紋飾。這種工藝多見於薄胎 銅器。由於胎體輕薄易碎，難以長久流傳，深埋地下者，又多蝕銹破 損，故而歷代金石著錄少見。最早收錄這類銅器的很可能是宋《宣和 博古圖錄》，其中有一件提梁扁壺，《西清古鑒》中也有一件提梁 壺，《善齋吉金錄》中收有一件熏爐。早年間，由於這種細密的羽紋 和錦紋不見於中原器物，反在兩廣和雲貴陶器中常見，學界推測這種 工藝出自嶺南。上世紀七十年代，廣西合浦發掘出大型漢墓群，不少 類似銅器出土，證實這一猜想。 此壺蓋頂凸起乳釘，四周飾以四葉紋，環繞鋸齒紋，蓋沿飾菱形紋， 頸部以鋸齒和菱紋三道夾錦羽兩道，下起弦紋三匝，腹部至足底以填 線、網格兩種菱紋交叉齒紋，通體略經整飭，除鏽施蠟，輕敷色料， 華麗周致。 這種細紋铜器，過去普遍認為是在鑄造成型后，用堅硬而精細的金屬 工具，鏨刻出繁縟精緻的多重紋樣。近年來北大學者研究表明，花紋 應為一體鑄造而成。據本品所附XRF和體視顯微報告，器身紋飾線條多 有間斷，符合雕出紋樣再鑄銅的做法。 類似形制與裝飾的銅壺可見1971年出土于合浦縣望牛嶺M1號墓，現藏 廣西壯族自治區博物館的綯纹提梁壺。海外巴黎賽努奇、斯德哥尔摩 遠東博物館、英國格拉斯哥、布里斯托等地的博物馆都藏有精美的類 似铜器，艾蘭與李學勤合著之《歐洲所藏中國青銅遺珠》末章《一組 漢代針刻青銅器》就此有詳細研究。

唐人尚茶，鍑是烹茶時盛湯的器具。此鍑斂口短頸，通體光素，僅在 肩部鏨有幾道弦紋，底部探出踡曲有致的三足，將渾圓的胎體輕輕托 起。舀水的長匙鍛打出挺勁的弧度，匙面出尖如同蓮瓣，长柄在末端 陡折，雕成垂蓮苞式樣。匙柄一端鏨有小小的品字形三圈纹样，當為 區別用途的記號。 陸羽《茶經》云：“鍑，以生鐵為之……內抹土而外抹沙。土滑于 內，易其摩滌；沙澀於外，吸其炎焰……長其臍，以守中也。臍長， 則沸中；沸中，末易揚，則其味淳也。”以銅鍑煮得熟水，將茶末投 入湯心，用茶匙不斷擊拂，調和融膠般稀稠的茶湯。長長的匙柄，使 人免於靠湯近火時被燙傷。烹茶的這番過程，即使在今天的日本茶 道，也有跡可循。 這種斂口鼓腹、圓底三足的器型在唐三彩陶瓷中十分常見，金銀銅器 則十分稀少，或有類似，也大多獨孤一例。譬如臨安唐代鎮海節度使 錢寬妻水邱氏墓中，六十年代曾出土三足銀風爐一隻，與本品幾乎一 致。此外西安何家村、扶風法門寺、丹徒丁卯橋等地發掘的唐代金銀 器中，也有部分茶具可供參考。

MR. AND MRS. JULIUS WEI-WU SIH Julius Wei-wu Sih (1921-2013) was the president and founder of J.W. Sih and Associates, Inc., Chicago, Illinois. After earning a civil engineering degree at National Chekiang University in China, he moved to the United States and received a master’s degree in structural engineering at the University of Michigan.

Instead of returning to China, he worked in New York City and eventually relocated to Chicago, where he was the chief structural engineer on the Chicago Federal Center and established his own engineering and architectural firm in 1965. Notable projects by J.W. Sih and Associates, Inc. include Greeley Elementary School, the Sixth District Circuit Courthouse (Markham), Fifth District Circuit Courthouse (Bridgeview), Third District Circuit Courthouse (Rolling Meadows), and several Chicago Transit Authority structures. He was a longtime member of the Union League of Chicago and the Michigan Shores Club.

Julius W. Sih’s lifelong interest in traditional Chinese culture is evidenced through his large collection of rare art books and Kunqu Opera tapes which was donated to the University of Chicago and a local Asian arts institute. In March 2017, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers offered works from Chinese painting collection from Mr. Julius W. Sih’s estate, which included exemplary pieces by Qi Baishi and Xu Beihong.

This year, on March 25th, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will offer 42 works from the rest of the collection as part of the Asian Works of Art sale. The highlights include calligraphies by Ye Gongchao, hanging scrolls by Wu Zheng, and a selection of fine Chinese wood block prints.

薛威武先生（1921-2013）是伊利诺伊州薛氏建築工程事務所的創始人暨前主席。薛 先生上世纪中畢業于國立浙江大學土木工程專業，毕业后赴美國深造，就讀于密歇 根大學結構工程專業並獲得碩士學位。學成後前往紐約工作，不久後遷回芝加哥。 薛先生是芝加哥聯邦大樓的首席結構工程師。1965年成立個人事務所。旗下代表項 目有芝加哥交通樞紐的工程結構設計，以及庫克郡第三、五、六區巡回法院大樓。 薛威武先生畢生熱愛中國傳統文化。2013年去世後，他珍藏的書籍善本被贈予芝加 哥大學，戲曲影像則授予本地藝術研究機構。2017年3月，亞洲部曾推出薛威武先生 舊藏書畫，其中涵蓋齊白石、徐悲鴻等名家贈與薛氏的《游蝦》、《奔馬圖》等。 今次專場將呈現遺產中餘下之藏品，亮點包括葉公超《前赤壁賦》四幅等水墨精品。

JANE DAVIS DOGGETT Jane Davis Doggett (b. 1929) is renowned graphic designer and artist best known for her innovations in airport wayfinding. She holds a B.A. (1952) from Sophie Newcomb College and an M.F.A. (1956) in graphics from the Yale University School of Art and Architecture, where she was a student of Bauhaus color theorist Josef Albers. She began her career designing airports in 1959, and is now among the world’s most prolific airport designers, with significant wayfinding work present in over 40 major airports.

Her wayfinding systems are known for their innovative use of color to create meaning, a theme which is echoed in her work as a fine artist. Her work has been exhibited at numerous institutions including the Yale University Art Gallery, the Tennessee State Museum, the Amory Art Center, and the Elliot Museum; in 2016 she was inducted into the Florida Artist’s Hall of Fame, and her designs have received numerous awards, including recognition from the US Department of Transportation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

While Doggett’s artistic practice is decidedly modern, her personal collection spans centuries. She has traveled the world and collected from everywhere she went. Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is delighted to be offering eleven works from her private collection of Chinese, Japanese, and Southeast Asian art in our upcoming March 25, 2019 sale of Asian Works of Art. Highlights include two outstanding Angkor Wat style stone sculptures: an 11th century torso of Vishnu and a 12th century torso of a temple guard; as a well as a Chinese Northern Qi Dynasty limestone torso of a standing Buddha. Leslie Hindman Auctioneer’s April 16-17 sale of Fine Furniture and Decorative arts will feature eleven works from Doggett’s collection of Western ancient art, including a Roman marble sculpture of Heracles and the Nemean lion.

The lots listed in this catalogue will be offered by Hindman LLC as owner or as agent for consignor(s) subject to the following terms and conditions. By bidding at auction you agree to be bound by these Conditions of Sale.

BEFORE THE SALE

Prospective buyers are strongly advised to personally examine any property in which they are interested before the auction takes place. Condition reports are usually available on request, on lots with a low estimate of $300 and above.

All lots are sold “AS IS” and without recourse and neither Hindman LLC nor its consignor(s) makes any warranties or representations, express or implied with respect to such lots. Neither Hindman LLC nor its consignor(s) makes any express or implied warranty or representation of any kind or nature with respect to merchantability, fitness for purpose, correctness of the catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, material, genuineness, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, exhibitions, literature or historical significance of any lot sold. The absence of any reference to the condition of a lot does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. No statement, whether written or oral, and whether made in the catalogue, or in supplements to the catalogue, an advertisement, a bill of sale, a salesroom posting or announcement, the remarks of an auctioneer, or otherwise, shall be deemed to create any warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Hindman LLC and its consignor(s) make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold.

Hindman LLC expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in the catalogue.

AT THE SALE Refusal of Admission Hindman LLC has the right, at our complete discretion, to refuse admission to the premises or participation in any auction and to reject any bid.

Registration before Bidding A prospective buyer must complete and sign a registration form and provide identification before bidding. We may require bank or other financial references.

Bidding as Principal When making a bid, a bidder is accepting personal liability to pay the purchase price, including the buyer’s premium, all applicable taxes and all other applicable charges, unless it has been explicitly agreed upon in writing with Hindman LLC before the commencement of the sale that the bidder is acting as agent on behalf of an identified third party acceptable to Hindman LLC, and that Hindman LLC will only look to the principal for payment.

Absentee Bids We will use reasonable efforts to carry out written bids given to us at least 24 hours prior to the sale for the convenience of clients who are not present at the auction in person, by an agent or by telephone. Bids must be placed in U.S. dollars. If we receive written bids on a particular lot for identical amounts, and these are the highest bids on the lot at the auction, it will be sold to the person whose written bid was received and accepted first. Execution of written bids is a free service undertaken subject to other commitments at the time of the sale and we do not accept liability for failing to execute a written bid or for errors and omissions in connection with the written bid.

Telephone Bids On lots with a low estimate of $300 and above and if a prospective buyer makes arrangements with us prior to the commencement of the sale we will use reasonable efforts to contact them to enable them to participate in the bidding by telephone and we do not accept liability for failure to do so or for errors and omissions in connection with telephone bidding. These telephone bids may be recorded at the discretion of Hindman LLC. Online Bids We will use reasonable efforts to carry out online bids and do not accept liability for equipment failure, inability to access the Internet or software malfunctions related to the execution of online bids.

Reserves Some lots in the sale are subject to a reserve which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate of the lot. Reserves are agreed upon with consignors or, in the absence thereof, the absolute discretion of Hindman LLC. The auctioneer may open the bidding on any lot below the reserve by placing a bid on behalf of the seller. The auctioneer may continue to bid on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, either by placing consecutive bids or by placing bids in response to other bidders. With respect to lots that are offered without reserve, unless there are already competing bids, the auctioneer, in his or her discretion, will generally open the bidding at half of the low estimate for the lot. In the absence of a bid at that level, the auctioneer may proceed backwards at his or her discretion until a bid is recognized, and then continue up from that amount.

Auctioneer’s Discretion The auctioneer has the right at his or her absolute and sole discretion to refuse any bid, to advance the bidding in such a manner as he or she may decide, to withdraw any lot, and in the case of error or dispute, and whether during or after the sale, to determine the successful bidder, to continue the bidding, to cancel the sale or to reoffer and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, our sale record is conclusive.

Successful Bid The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the purchaser.

In the case of a tie bid, the winning bidder will determined by the auctioneer at his or her sole discretion. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the auctioneer has final discretion to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Hindman LLC sale record shall be conclusive. Title passes upon the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer to the highest acknowledged bidder subject to the Conditions of Sale set forth herein, and the bidder assumes full risk and responsibility.

AFTER THE SALE Buyer’s Premium In addition to the hammer price, the buyer agrees to pay Hindman LLC a buyer’s premium and the applicable sales tax added to the final total. The buyer’s premium for all purchases except via live online bidding is twenty-five (25%) of the hammer price up to and including $250,000; twenty percent (20%) of any amount in excess of $250,000 up to and including $3,000,000; and twelve percent (12%) of any amount in excess of $3,000,000.

The buyer’s premium for purchases made via live online bidding is twenty-six (26%) of the hammer price up to and including $250,000; twenty-one percent (21%) of any amount in excess of $250,000 up to and including $3,000,000; and thirteen percent (13%) of any amount in excess of $3,000,000.

Payment The buyer must pay the entire amount due (including the hammer price, buyer’s premium, all applicable taxes and other charges) no later than 5 p.m. on the seventh (7) business day following the sale. Payment in U.S. dollars may be made with cash; bank check or cashier’s check drawn on a U.S. bank; money order; or wire transfer unless other arrangements are made with Hindman LLC. Hindman LLC reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Hindman LLC a handling charge of $50 for any check dishonored by the drawee.

Collecting Purchases Once Hindman LLC has received all funds due to us, the buyer shall collect purchased lots within seven (7) business days from the date of the sale.

Packing and Shipping If your bid is successful, we can provide you with a list of shippers. We will not be responsible for the acts or omissions of carriers or packers whether or not recommended by us. Property will not be released to the shipper without the buyer’s written consent and until payment has been made in full. Packing and handling of purchased lots by us is at the entire risk of the purchaser, and Hindman LLC will have no liability of any loss or damage to such items.

Non Payment If we do not receive payment in full, in good cleared funds, within seven (7) business days following the sale, we are entitled in our absolute discretion to exercise one or more of the following measures, in addition to any additional actions available to us by law: a.) to impose a late charge of one and a half percent (1.5%) per thirty (30) days of the total purchase price b.) to hold the defaulting buyer liable for the total amount due and to begin legal proceedings for its recovery together with interest, legal fees and costs to the fullest extent permitted under applicable law c.) to cancel the sale d.) to resell the property publicly or privately with such terms as we find appropriate, to resell the property at public auction without reserve, and with the purchaser liable for any deficiency, cost, including handling charges, the expenses of both sales, our commission on both sales at our regular rate, all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages. In addition, a defaulting purchaser will be deemed to have granted us a security interest in, and we may retain as collateral security for such purchaser’s obligations to us, any property in our possession owned by such purchaser. At our option, payment will not be deemed to have been made in full until we have collected funds represented by checks, or in the case of bank or cashier’s checks, we have confirmed their authenticity.

LIABILITY

Condition Reports Hindman LLC is not responsible for the correctness of any statement of any kind concerning any lot, whether written or oral, nor for any other errors or omissions in description or for any faults or defects in any lot. Neither the seller, ourselves, our officers, employees or agents, give any representation, warranty or guarantee or assume any liability of any kind in respect of any lot with regard to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, description, size, quality, condition, attribution, completeness, authorship, authenticity, rarity, importance, medium, provenance, exhibition history, literature or historical relevance. Except as required by local law any warranty of any kind whatsoever is excluded by this paragraph. Items under $1,000 are collated upon request.

Purchased Lots If for any reason a purchased lot cannot be delivered in the same condition as at the time of sale, or should any purchased lot be stolen, mis-delivered or lost prior to delivery, Hindman LLC shall not be liable for any amount in excess of that paid by the purchaser.

Legal Ramifications The rights and obligations of the parties with respect to these Conditions of Sale, the conduct of the auction and any matters connected with any of the foregoing shall be governed and interpreted by the laws of the jurisdiction in Illinois. If any part of these Conditions of Sale is found by any court to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable, that part shall be discounted and the rest of the conditions shall continue to be valid to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Discretion Any and all of the conditions may be waived or modified in the sole discretion of Hindman LLC.

Failure to Collect Purchases If property is not picked up within seven (7) business days following the sale, whether or not payment has been made, Hindman LLC reserves the right to charge $5 per lot per day or to deliver said property to a public warehouse for storage at the purchaser’s expense. Hindman LLC shall have no liability for any damage to property left on its premises for more than seven (7) business days following the sale. In addition, we reserve the right to impose a late charge of one and a half percent (1.5%) per month of the total purchase price if payment is not made in accordance with the conditions set forth herein. For property that is not picked up after thirty (30) calendar days, an additional administration fee of $75 will be charged.
