J

im Carpenter was a prolific collector in a variety of categories but any visitor to his home and shop could see that he had a true passion for shaving mugs and barbershop collectibles. Over the course of his life, he assembled one of the great collections of

turn of the century occupational shaving mugs. Carpenter’s early foray into dealing antiques was supplemented by his career as a barber himself, or a ‘Tonsorial Artist’ as his business card stated. He outfitted his shop in Montague, New Jersey with turn of the century items including an 1870s barber chair, barber bottles, magazine racks, advertisements, shaving mugs and their storage racks – to give his clients the feeling of stepping back in time. The barbershop eventually gave way to his antique business as Jim, along with his wife Miriam, turned his attention more fully to traveling, collecting, and dealing antiques. While he ultimately decided to close the barbershop, his enthusiasm for this area of collecting did not diminish and many of the shaving mugs are deeply connected to his other interests. Jim was a US Army veteran, one of the founding members of the Montague Volunteer Fire Department, and member of a Masonic lodge and the Antique Automobile Club of America - just a few aspects of his life that are reflected in the mugs he collected. His particular fascination with antique cars is what led him to an auto parts business in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1968 where he would rediscover the work of George Ohr – the contribution to the art and antiques world for which Carpenter is most widely known. It certainly demonstrates his eye for quality in unexpected places, and for an object’s unique details. The collection offered here is the result of a lifetime of curious and multi-faceted collecting, interested in both the modern, and the ‘old fashioned.’ Freeman’s | Hindman is proud to offer at auction the Barbershop Collection of James Carpenter.
