First French edition of Ellis’ account of the expedition to discover the Northwest Passage, complete with 10 folding plans and plates and head- and tail-pieces. “The most important result of this voyage was that it definitely put an end to the idea that the North West Passage lay through Hudson’s Bay.” (Lande) Ellis made many valuable observations on the wildlife and people, particularly the customs of the Eskimos, which were relatively unknown up to that time. First edition in lithograph form of this celebrated collection of Cuban views, complete with chromolithograph title partly in gold, 27 tinted lithograph plates of vignettes captioned in Spanish after Frederico Mialhe and others with blue borders, and two folding lithograph maps of Cuba and La Habana (undated). Oblong 4to, quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt-lettered red leather spine label, title page in Dutch and French. Rare second printing of the first edition of one of the finest plate books on eighteenth-century Dutch villas, of great importance to landscape design, with folding map of the River Vecht and 102 half-page engraved plates (24 handcolored) depicting the homes and gardens along the river belonging to the wealthy families of Amsterdam and Utrecht, drawn from nature by Stoopendaal. Plates numbered 1-98, but there are four extra views of the House Driemond as 94ad. Two editions were printed in 1719; the first with 98 plates, the second, and preferred, presented here, with 102, and two statues behind the hedge in plate 94. Lacking frontispiece engraving and all text save the title page, which is present; minor wear to boards, with loss at corners and ends; endpapers creased; repaired tear to fold-out map and title page; minor intermittent spotting. The manuscript of Beauchene’s memoirs was apparently given by his widow to Le Sage, celebrated for his authorship of Gil Blas. Hinges split but firm; head of spines chipped. $400-600

First published in book form in 1822, taken as a whole, this is the first modern statistical analysis of Mexico and the Southwest. They were not published as a whole until 1920. Humboldt provided Viceroy de Iturrigaray in Mexico a copy of his manuscript before he sent it to Europe; this copy is likely a contemporary copy of that manuscript. Very light foxing. $1,000-2,000

27pp. Small 4to trimmed to 174 x 13mm, modern 3/4 green cloth over marbled boards, renewed endpapers. First edition of this rare account by an anonymous author of the expedition undertaken by the English under the command of Admiral Penn, father of William Penn, and General Venables, under Cromwell’s orders, to seize the Spanish West-Indies underlining the initial failures and eventual successes of The Commonwealth navy and providing a brief description of the islands. Following the defeat of Cromwell’s strong army at Hispaniola on April 25, 1655, the British fleet turned their attention to Jamaica, which was seized shortly after. Owing to its sugar crop, Jamaica would become one of the most profitable and valuable English spoils and a central point for the development of the slave trade. 4-inch loss to the title page rebacked; some brownspotting and light marginal foxing throughout; previous owner’s manuscript notations to verso final leaf. $1,500-2,500

First Spanish edition (first published in Italian), large paper copy, of this significant work on the Spanish conquistadors and settlers in America from the writings of Raynal, Robertson and Las Cases. Las Casas, a Bishop stationed in Cuba, complained of the treatment of the Indians by the Spanish. “The author would have rendered a more important and honourable service to Spaniards if, instead of endeavouring to disculpate them from calumnies, not entirely without foundation, he had manifested to foreigners the useful measures which the Spanish Ministry were taking to remedy the abuses of their colonial government.” (Sabin) Light rubbing to boards; manuscript notation to verso halftitle and final leaf; otherwise an exceptionally bright copy of this work in very fine binding.
