According to the preamble, all of the original records of the Chicago Academy of Sciences were destroyed by the Great Fire of 1871. The present volume consists of restored records, as far as could be made possible from “published documents, newspaper files and the memory of the Members.” An essential resource - no other copies have been located - for the history of this important institution. p. 8, for example, lists all of the “Life Members” of the Academy as of September 20, 1864. The rules of the Board of Education are included along with the text books to be used and the school boundaries. Printed newspaper broadside. 28 x 20 ½ inches. Regarding the events surrounding the general order by Major General A. E. Burnside to suppress publication of the Chicago Times because of its policies supporting some issues of the South during the Civil War. On the evening of the order’s issuance, the newspaper reports 20,000 Chicagoans gathered in the court house square in protest. Troops were called to quell the disturbance, but the order was subsequently rescinded, following proceedings, by President Abraham Lincoln, thus preserving the rights and privileges of free press in the U.S. Chipping to edges of the pages; creased from folds; large circular dampstain to center; otherwise fine. 8vo, paper wraps, string bound, 32 pp. Regarding the events surrounding the general order by Major General A. E. Burnside to suppress publication of the Chicago Times. The speeches that were presented by prominent Chicago citizens at the assembly the next day are reported in full within the newspaper and in this booklet. The court proceedings resulted in a rescinding of the Burnside order by President Abraham Lincoln thus preserving “the freedom on the press.” Not in American Imprints Inventory, but mentioned as having accompanied AII 710 at auction. Evans was a founder of Northwestern University and the town of Evanston, Illinois, cradle of Northwestern University. Evans invested in railroads and became the Governor of Colorado territory and later elected a senator to the U.S. Congress. A 159 year old rare association piece of Chicago medical ephemera.
