Dr. Ivan Jeanne Weiler graduated from Pomona College and earned a doctorate degree in biology in 1961 with Nobel laureate Robert W. Sperry at the California Institute of Technology. Her research in molecular neuroscience led her in the late 1990s to discover the basis for Fragile X Syndrome, a kind of intellectual disability. She worked at the Institute for Cancer Research in Fox Chase, Pennsylvania, at the University of Konstanz, Germany and at the Beckman Institute of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

In addition to science, Dr. Weiler’s other great loves were art and travel. She and her husband, the late Dr. Eberhardt Weiler, began collecting pre-Columbian sculpture in the 1950s. They also became interested in acquiring antique scientific instruments on travels to Mexico and abroad. Dr. Weiler and her husband continued to travel extensively, even while living in Germany beginning in 1968. Their collection reflects their love of France, Spain, and especially Italy, where they made a second home.
