Mary Griggs Burke spent more than half a century collecting Japanese art, building a body of paintings, sculpture, textiles, ceramics and artifacts that has been exhibited throughout the world, including at the Tokyo National Museum and twice at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The collection was so extensive that it had to be stored in its own apartment, next to Ms. Burke’s own home on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Ms. Burke was raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, the descendant of railroad, banking and manufacturing titans. She graduated from both Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University, and married Jackson Burke in 1955. The couple had homes in Manhattan, Oyster Bay, New York, Hobe Sound, Florida and Cable, Wisconsin. The property from the Griggs family’s rustic and idyllic Cable house is featured in this auction as well as our July 25 auction in Milwaukee.
