he 33rd Inter University South Zone Youth Festival (SZYF’17) was inaugurated on 18th December 2017 at MGR Auditorium, Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science, Chennai, India. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) entrusted the event to Hindustan Institute of Technolgy and Science this year. Dr. K. Balaraman, Director General, National Institute of Wind Energy, MNRE, Government of India, Chennai was the Chief Guest. In his speech he emphasized on Democracy of Learning, and informed that the role of teachers in the 21st century is not only confined to academics but also to encourage students in extracurricular activities. Dr. S. Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor, HITS welcomed the dignitaries and the participants and also highlighted the objective of the All India Universities Cultural fest is to promote National Integration and Communal Harmony. Smt. Maragatham Kumaravel, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha was the Special Guest, she praised the vision of Late Dr. KCG Verghese, Founder Chairman, Hindustan Group of Institutions, “Make Every Man a Success and No Man a Failure”, she also said that all are born

with innate talents and the Youth Fest is the cultural platform to bring forth the talents. In his speech, Sri. Neville J. Billimoria, Immigration Consultant & Founder D20 Marathon, Guest of Honour, stated that, “Everyone has potential to give back to the society”. He also appreciated the facilities provided by Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science. Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, HITS, said “If you don't know where you came from you don't know where you will be going”. He correlated this saying with the information that everyone should respect the culture and give due importance to our traditions, Youth Festival is the right forum to propagate our traditions and culture. He shared his experiences during his visit overseas when he had come across other nations presenting their cultural shows with patriotism. The Kalai Koodam Cup was exhibited amidst cheers amongst the audience. Mr. Amar K, CSE, HITS students explained about the heritage, culture and activities of Kalai Koodam. Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar, Hindustan University proposed the Vote of Thanks. The inauguration ended with the National Anthem.

T

he Association of Indian universities (AIU) is a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 with membership of Indian Universities. It provides a forum for administrators and academicians of member universities to exchange views and discuss matters of common concern. It acts as a bureau of information exchange in higher education.

ne of the biggest metropolitan cities of India, Chennai, earlier known as Madras, is acknowledged as the ‘Cultural Capital of India’. It is recognized for its unchanged age old traditions and rich heritage. The city had a humble beginning in 1639 when Francis Day and Andrew Cogan, agents of the erstwhile East India Company, obtained a piece of land from the ruler of Vijayanagar Empire who named it Chennapatnam. Very soon, it rose to be a presidency town, and after Independence, the capital of Tamil Nadu. Established in the same year, Fort St. George was one of the earliest constructions in Chennai and was the center of the British operations in South India. From its beginning, the city has taken a giant leap and is now a major educational, automotive and industrial hub of India. A perfect amalgam of traditions and modernity, the city covers about 200 sq. kms of land and stands face to face with the Bay of Bengal in the east. The city has produced some stalwarts of Carnatic music and is the home of Tamil Film Industry.

The present membership of the Association is 527 including seven Associate Members. The universities helps to maintenance and develop expenditure, including research studies, workshops, training programmes for university administrators, orientation programmes. The AIU is also empowered to grant Associate Membership to universities of the neighbouring countries of India.

ABOUT KALAI KOODAM

K

alai Koodam is a festival to showcase the integrated and diverse talents of the emerging youth of India. The primary aim is to promote excellence and developments in the field of arts and culture particularly with reference to India’s (South) ancient heritage, its evolution through the ages and its reference to modern arts, aesthetics, literature, culture and social perception. It brings about understanding and appreciation between the young and energetic talents of different regions of southern part of India. www.hindustanuniv.ac.in

alai Koodam - The 33rd Inter University South Zone Youth Festival was inaugurated at Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science with great pomp and gaiety on 18th December 2017. The fest is scheduled for five days from 18th – 22nd December 2017. The campus was abuzz with enthusiastic youth and faculty of 31 universities. The highlight of the day was the arrival of more than 1000 participants from across India at HITS. The participants made a beeline for registering themselves and also signed the huge board placed in the campus, emphasizing their involvement and eagerness to participate in the five days cultural fest at HITS.

he Managers Meet, was presided by Dr. S. K. Sharma, AIU Representative and Observer. The tone was set for the rest of the day when Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar, HITS welcomed the participants and managers of the respective institutions. Dr. Brig. Ravi Varman, Dean Admin, Dr. Afrose, HOD, Fashion Languages and Mr. Qureshi, Senior Admin Manager, HITS, members of the Core Committee, Dr. P R Janci Rani, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Sudheesh Das, Rajiv Gandhi University, Dr. P K Baby, CUSAT, Dr. K.Venkat Ramanan, Sri Venkateshwara University, Valasarajan, University of Calicut, Dr. Sowbhagyawati, University of Mysore, Dr. H. R. Thippeswamy, Koyempu University, Mr. Aniruth Maddi, Vignan’s Foundation For Science, Technology, Dr. Venkataramanan, Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya, Dr. P Unnikrishnan, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit and other Managers of 31 Universities introduced themselves. The participants had a break and they enjoyed their lunch and the whole atmosphere had a festive look. It was a pleasing sight to see the conglomeration of youth from across India exchanging their camaraderie in the most beautiful manner. A sense of patriotism prevailed in the air and Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science reverberated with the presence of more than 1000 youth participants.

dazzling cultural rally stole the show at Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science (HITS). Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, HITS and Dr. S. Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor flagged off the 33rd Inter University, South Zone Youth Festival 2017 Cultural Rally. The flamboyant procession started from Jupiter International Boys Hostel, portraying folk to scintilating form of Art, Music and Traditional Dance forms. The HITS NCC cadets parade was resplendent and was very captivating. More than 1000 participants from 31 Universities were part of the Cultural Rally organized prior to the Inaugural Function that was held on 18th December 2017.
