HGI GOLDEN JUBILEE VALEDICTORY CELEBRATION
Hindustan Group of Institutions celebrated its Golden Jubilee year’s Valedictory Function on 16th March 2018 at Hotel Le Royal Meridien, Chennai. The function was presided by Shri. M. Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble Vice President of India; Shri. Banwarilal Purohit, Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu; Shri. Bharat Joshi, Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission, Chennai; Shri. D. Jayakumar, Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Govt. of Tamil Nadu; His Grace The Most Rev Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma; and other eminent personalities. They aptly commemorated the legacy of the group built over 5 decades in providing education for the Nation. Mr. Naidu said that, “Educational institutions must compete with global varsities and train students in the best way possible so as to compete in the quest for knowledge and emerge victoriously. He also added that we must abandon colonial mind-set and try rather to be multilingual; yet never forget one’s mother tongue.” Rev Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma shared his reminiscence of Dr. KCG Verghese, who was a pioneer in the field of technical education. He also marvelled about the Founder’s philanthropic touch to reach the underprivileged and make education common to all. In her address, HGI Chairperson Dr. Elizabeth Verghese said the occasion was an opportunity to renew and strengthen the late Founder KCG Verghese’s vision of ‘Making Every Man a Success and No Man a Failure” and it is a matter of pride that HGI has accomplished 50 years of excellence in education. The HGI Golden Jubilee Souvenir was released by Shri. M. Venkaiah Naidu. The souvenir records a culmination of notable 50 years of accomplishments. Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro-Chancellor, HGI, proposed the Vote of Thanks.

CSI Awards
The Computer Society of India organized the 52nd Annual CSI Convention from 19 to 21 January 2018 at Kolkata. HITS was awarded the “Best Accredited Student Branch Award” during the event. Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director; D. Chitradevi, Student Branch Coordinator; and Dr. S. Sathyalakshmi Professor, Dept. of CSE received the Award.
SAE Outstanding Faculty Advisors Award
HITS has received two prestigious awards for the categories “BEST INSTITUTE FOR PROMOTING GLOBAL EXPOSURE” and “BEST B-SCHOOL FOR PROMOTING INDUSTRY - ACADEMIA INTERFACE” from ASSOCHAM during the 11th ASSOCHAM Higher Education Summit - 2018 on 17th February 2018 at New Delhi. The Awards were distributed by Dr. Satya Pal Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State, MHRD to Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director HITS; and Dr. G. Ilavazhagan, Director Research, HITS. The summit was preside by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Union Minister, Ministry of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences.
Team STALWARTZ BAJA SAEINDIA 2018, a five-day event at Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh was conducted between 25th and 30th January 2018. 150 teams participated in the event. Students of Auto, Mechanical, Chemical, HITS won the 36th position in India, 2nd in Tamilnadu & 1st in Chennai.
Prof Dr. K. Kamalakkannan, HoD, Automobile Engineering received SAE Outstanding Faculty Advisors Award on 11th March 2018, Detroit, Michigan, USA. This award was presented for his immense contribution and involvement in SAE activities for students for more than 15 years of service at Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science.

8th CONVOCATION
The 8th Convocation was held on 7th, October 2017, 979 UG candidates, 214 PG candidates, and 25 Ph.D candidates received their degrees. Dr. S. Christopher, Secretary, Department of Defence (R&D) & Chairman, DRDO was the Chief Guest; Mr. Mecca Rafeeque Ahammed, Chairman, Farida Group of Companies; Mr. Alex Jacob, Structural Engineer, United Consultant; and Padma Shri. Narain Karthikeyan, International Formula One Racing Driver were the Guests of Honour. They were awarded with the prestigious Honoris Causa Degrees during the convocation. Dr. S. Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor, while reading the annual report, proudly exclaimed, “there has been a marked improvement and significant increase in all the

domains of academics which was possible because of the commitment of our faculty, staff and students alike and able guidance and encouragement by the Management.” Dr. Ramachandran further articulated his gratitude and happiness on obtaining a CGPA of 3.3 on 4 by the NAAC peer team; rated 3 Stars by the world renowned international rankings organization Quacquarelli Symonds QS, 5 stars in Teaching, Employability, Facilities, Innovation and Inclusiveness and an overall rating of 3 STARS Ratings. He also added that the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) accredited the B.Tech Aeronautical Engineering Programme.

RESOURCE PERSONS Girl Power Summit, an initiative from Entrepreneurs Council of India in association with HITS was conducted on 11 March 2018. Eminent women achievers from various sectors were invited for motivational talks and panel discussions. As a part of Women’s Day celebrations, competitions were conducted for both students and staff category and winners were recognized with awards during the summit. • • • • • • • •
OfO, a Beijing-based Bicycle Sharing Company founded in 2014 operates over 10 million yellow bicycles in 250 cities and 20 countries. The dockless OfO system uses a smartphone app to unlock bicycles. OFO Cycles was launched for the first time in India at HITS. It is a step towards promoting eco-friendly travel among student community. Mr. Ashok Verghese inaugurated the launch in the presence of Mr. Dexter Sim, Expansion Manager, OFO, Asia Pacific Countries.

Dr. Ravi Margasahayam, NASA Global Goodwill Space Ambassador from John F.Kennedy Space Centre delivered his lecture during “International Seminar on Space Odyssey” on 6th February 2018 on the topic “Rocket Noise and Vibration” at Andromeda Lecture Theatre. Dr.Ravi unveiled the static model of “KCG SAT” during the event, the proposed satellite will be launched by 2020. The lecture was conducted in association with Aeronautical Society of India, Chennai Branch and a part of Nebula Astro Club activity. Dr.Ravi detailed about the launch vehicle details of NASA.

HYPERLOOP ORCAPOD UNVEILED AT HITS
The Hyperloop OrcaPod was unveiled at HITS on 12th March 2018 by Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, HITS and Dr. K. P.Isaac, Vice Chancellor, HITS. Unveiling the OrcaPod, Mr.Ashok Verghese said, “ The progress achieved by Hyperloop India team is a motivator to several young Indians who wish to try their hands on innovation. Faster mobility coupled with sustainability at affordable cost makes the hyperloop an attractive choice for implementation in our country.” Dr. K. P. Isaac said, “Youngsters should channelize their energies to take efforts in developing cutting edge technologies that shall change the way people live. Hyperloop is one such idea that shall disrupt the mobility space across the globe.

The National Conference on Recent Advances in Environmental Remediation (NCRAER 18) was organised by the Department of Chemical Engineering in collaboration with Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises (ABLE) on 23rd March 2018. The Department of Chemistry and the Centre for Clean Energy and Nanoconvergence (CENCON) jointly organized a one-day National Conference on Chemistry Driven Clean Process and Alternate Energies – Scope & Challenges on 07 February 2018. Dr. R. Jayavel, Director, Centre for Research, Anna University, Chennai was the Chief Guest. In his address he emphasized on the need for clean process and quoted the current status of electric vehicles and the expected projection in 2020 and 2040. He also released the Book of Abstracts for NCCP 2018.

9TH ABBS - BRICS STUDENTS MEET
The 9th Association of BRICS Business Schools (ABBS) International Students Meet was inaugurated on 1st February 2018 at HITS. His Excellency Sergey L Kotov, Consul General of Russia was the Chief Guest of the meet. Around 100 exuberant participants across the BRICS nations attended the event. Besides academic sessions, sporting events and competitions, the participants visited three industries and also had a cultural visit to Dakshin Chitra and Crocodile Bank. The Chief Guest mentioned that Indo-Russian ties were predominantly confined to the Defence sector. The time has come to collaborate in the area of agriculture; as food security is a major challenge to both the nations: population of India and climatic conditions of Russia. He also traced the importance of increasing actual investments in priority areas among the BRICS nations. Prof. J. Philip, President, ABBS, briefed that ABBS is the only inter-continental B-School Association which organizes an annual gathering of students. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, HITS, declaring the Students Meet open, appealed to the young management graduates to adhere to the quality and ethics and be aware of global expectations. With reference to the theme of the Students Meet, she said that the digital economy is useful in preventing black money and bringing transparency in governance. HGI participated in the Hyderabad Aero Expo and exhibited various students project from centre for Autonomous Systems (School of Aeronautical Sciences). As part of Aviation awareness campaign for students, a quiz program was conducted and various prizes were distributed to school students.

The School of Computing Sciences organized ACM ICPC Asia Chennai Regional Contest on 12 December 2017. Dr. E. Iniya Nehru, Senior Technical Director, National Informatics Centre, Govt. of India was the Chief Guest of the event. Mr. Vanjape Rajas, Mr. Khattar Tanuj, Mr. Cacklur Vedant from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, were the Winners; and Mr. Gosain Vaibhav, Mr. Luthra Saharsh, Mr. Kumar Adarsh of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee; and Mr. Mittal Parth, Mr. Banga Hanit, and Mr. Rohilla Utsav of IIIT-Delhi were the Runners. 2000 students across Asia participated.

Christmas Celebration
The Golden Jubilee Christmas Celebrations on 1st December 2017 was a momentous and memorable day for HITS with excellent choir rendition of carols and tableau with pomp and gaiety by the entire HGI. The Chief Guest, Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Makarios, Bishop of Mar Thoma Church, Chennai -Bangalore Diocese in his Christmas message said that the message of Christmas is that the visible material world is bound to the invisible spiritual world. The Guest of Honour, Prof. P. J. Kurien, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha voiced that Christmas is a spirit which should permeate every part of our lives. Commemorating the 50 years of excellence in the field of academia by the Hindustan Group of Institutions, cake cutting ceremony was held. The Hindustan Group of Institutions Calendar and Diary 2018 of the institution was released by John T Jacob, Senior Director, Boodai Trading Company,Kuwait. The programme ended with the arrival of Santa Claus wishing Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. The Silent Night hymn was sung by Hindustan International School students.
Onam Ponnonam 2017 was celebrated by the Hindustan Group of Institution as a part of its Golden Jubilee Year celebrations on 26th August 26, 2017. Famous singer and cine actor Mr. Vijay Yesudas was the Chief Guest. Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese in her Inaugural Address wished the audience a very happy and prosperous Onam.

Celebration Talk KALAI KOODAM SOUTH ZONE YOUTH FESTIVAL
Overall Champion University of Kerala Kalai Koodam – 2017 the 33rd Inter University South Zone Youth Festival was inaugurated at HITS with great pomp and gaiety on 18th December 2017. The fest was conducted from 18th to 22nd December 2017. The campus was abuzz with enthusiastic youth and faculty from 31 universities. The significance of the event was the arrival of over a thousand participants from across five Southern States at HITS. Dr. K. Balaraman, Director General, National Institute of Wind Energy, MNRE, Government of India, Chennai was the Chief Guest. Smt. Maragatham Kumaravel, Member of Parliament (TN), Lok Sabha, was the Special Guest; and Sri. Neville J. Billimoria, Immigration Consultant & Founder D20 Marathon, was the Guest of Honour. Participants showcased their talents in various events such as One act play, Light vocal solo, Indian/Hindustani/Carnatic, Music, Quiz, Mimicry, On the spot painting, Collage, Cartoon, Music & Dance (Classical/Western, Folk), Folk Orchestra, Literary Events (Quiz, Elocution, Debate, Theatre), Poster Making, Clay Modelling, Photography and Installation. Kalaikoodam -2017 received a wide coverage in print media and was telecasted in TV channels.

Mar Thoma Church, Chennai Bangalore Diocese Teens conference was inaugurated on 27th December 2017. Youngsters from Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra, Tamil Nadu participated in the conference. Rt. Rev. Mathews Mar Makarios Episcopa, Diocesean Bishop of Chennai-Bangalore region presided over the event. Conference was inaugurated by Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director of the Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science. Rev. Joby Verghese, Student Chaplain, HGI welcomed the gathering.
HITS celebrated the harvest festival of ‘Pongal’ with great zeal and fervor, Decked in traditional dresses, students and staff filled the campus with the land’s cultural aura.
World Theatre Day
Fiesta 2017
The Department of Languages hosted the “World Drama Fest 2018” commemorating the World Theatre Day on 27th March 2018. The event, was organized by the Masquerade Theatre Club, HITS. Interlude and Stand-Up Comedy Competition were held for the students. Mr. Nivash Gopalasamy, HR and Head of training from Crea Shakthi, a theatre group was the Chief Guest. The motive of the celebration was to instil theatrical skills amongst students. Certificates were distributed to the winners by the Chief Guest and Dr. Sherine Joy, HOD,Languages. Fiesta-2017, Freshers Day was held on 27th October 2017. Mr. Sujith Kumar, HR Business Leader, Infosys Ltd, Chennai was the Chief Guest. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor addressed the students and spoke on the role of discipline, dedication and hard work in making a person successful. She urged the students to follow the Founder Dr. K.C.G Verghese, HGI as a role model in their life.

69th Republic Day celebration was held at HITS on 26th January 2018. Group Captain Dinesh Suri, Group Commander NCC, Madras B Group, Chennai was the Chief Guest. Awards were distributed by the Chief Guest for the staff in different categories. Best Attendance awards, Best Projects, Appreciation for outstanding contributions for the conduct of Golden Convergence Awards 2018, was given to Ms. Madhuri, Deputy Registrar, HITS and Alumni Coordinator.

Football Men Team secured 4th position in South Zone Inter University Football Men tournament held at Calicut University, Kerala from 20th to 28th December 2017.

The 8th Dr. K.C.G. Verghese Memorial State Level Inter Collegiate Football Tournament (Men) and 3rd Bay Range Open Inter Collegiate Tennis Tournament Men & Women were held at HITS from 13th to 16th September 2017. In the Football Tournament, Loyola College emerged as Winners and HITS as Runners. While Mr. Gokul of Loyola College and Ms. Ramya Natarajan of HITS bagged the Winners title, Mr. P.V. Jeevan of Loyola College, and Ms. Abinikka of MOP College finished as Runners in Tennis Tournament. Mr. Krishnadeep Menon, Chief Operating Officer, Chennaiyin FC (Grassroots Development), the Chief Guest of the event distributed prizes during the Valedictory Function.

The 26th Dr. K.C.G. Verghese Memorial inter-state collegiate Basketball Tournament was conducted on 19th March 2018 in Air Jordan Basketball courts. Mr. Vineeth Revi Mathew, International Basketball Player and Senior Manager IOB was the Chief Guest. The Hindustan Women’s Team and Loyola College, Chennai team bagged the Women and Men Championship trophy respectively.
As a part of the Birthday Celebrations of Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, a sports extravaganza was conducted from 23rd to 25th September, 2017 at HITS Campus. The 9th International Football Tournament for Foreign Students and the 8th Inter Collegiate Volleyball Tournament for men and women were organized. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese presented the Trophies, Cash Award and Certificate to the winners. The following teams participated in the tournament: India, Gambia XI, Sudan, South Sudan, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet and Somalia. Team Gambia XI emerged as the winners in the Football Tournament. Panimalar College Men and HITS Women bagged the winners title in the Volleyball Tournament.

Youth Winter Residential Camp was organized by PBA Academy in association with HITS between 22 December 2017 and 3 January 2018.
The vision of the camp was to train on basic skills, advanced techniques and tactics for the Basketball and Football players. 35 players pan India enrolled in the camp. Mr. Jayasankar Menon, Asian All Star Basketball Player & Former Indian Captain, Chief Manager, Indian Bank and Mrs. Prasanna Jayasankar Menon, Former Indian Basketball team Captain, Southern Railway. Mr. S.J.A. Ahmed, Mr. S. Bhattacharjee, and Mr. Abdul were the mentors for the camp.
