Living Design I look at the world through design. My design is my dialogue with life. A long and winding path led me to design. It was when many seemingly trivial, unrelated experiences gradually fell into place that I realized what I intended to achieve was in interior design.  Many years ago, after studying graphic design, I worked in a small furniture store. There I had the opportunity to put many bold ideas into practice — from business card design to furniture display — and my boss was always supportive. That was the first time I felt the joy of expressing myself through design, especially conveying ideas that cannot be articulated in words, before I had any proper training in interior design. Later, while studying architectural interiors in San Francisco, I was able to learn the ropes quickly with my experience in design, encountering something new and inspiring every day. We were given a whole semester to develop ideas from scratch, make collages, try out designs and learn from our own mistakes. Once we were tasked with building something in an empty space, I created an installation with bamboo and hemp ropes based on the Ming Dynasty philosophy classic Caigentan, one of my favorite books at the time. For my dissertation project, I came up with a design for a museum that was inspired by the shape of sound waves created when humpback whales sing.

One Oasis One Oasis Show Flat B Macau Gross Area 5,045 sq ft Show flat Unit B is the result of a design collaboration between Comodo and Macau One Oasis. Designers used a wealth of materials, such as wood, marble and metal, and different shades of colour to create a gorgeous modern environment. In the living room, a custom-made rose-gold metal facade wall continuously runs across the two floors, with the reflection from a mirror curtain wall, creating a spacious feeling of low-profile luxury. Through the full-height glass windows, facing the views and lights of the magnificent Hengqin Island, the 360 degrees breathtaking scenery melds with the unit.

Sensibility and rationality Throughout our design process, we find that successful interior design involves rational thinking. Identifying function, application and material characteristics are all related and impact each other. Design is often influenced by aesthetics, and the concept of aesthetics is concerned with sensibility.

It relies upon sensory perception. The use of colour and imagination helps create new ideas.

Inspiration The Sea The Home Bellagio Sham Tseng .Hong Kong 1,000 sq ft Situated in Bellagio, Sham Tseng, this 1,000 sq ft home, owned by a couple, features two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open kitchen. The design focuses on practicality and aesthetics. The flooring is light-grey, and brown toned grainy tiles that match the simple Scandinavian furniture and decor, create a natural, earthy environment. The main appeal of the apartment is the sea view. To accentuate this, a sofa faces the panoramic scenery, with matching light-grey cushions placed along the windowsill. Also, bearing in mind the owner’s passion for playing the piano, a keyboard sits in the guest room. In addition, the helper’s room and kitchen were combined to form an open kitchen, making the living room appear more spacious.

Classy With Black World Wide Garden Tai Wai Hong Kong 2,500 sq ft With a modern design approach, Comodo divided this apartment into two sections: a public area and a personal space. The public area combines three functions: entertaining friends and family, an office and a gym. The private area, on the other hand, includes space in the apartment where the owner rests and gears up for the next day. The focal point of the public area is the three revolving partitions that separate the training room from the dining area. It was inspired by the rotating wheels of the owner’s favourite bicycle.

Lines + Angles Central Mid-levels Hong Kong 2,200 sq ft For this Mid-levels duplex, Comodo had to redo the entire layout. Inspired by the shape of the apartment, Alain’s team played with slanted lines and angles. The design of the two floors features a lot of glass to allow natural light to illuminate the corridors. Folding beds were used to maximise activity space and increase flexibility. Sliding doors were incorporated between rooms and the corridors. The walls are painted white and many pieces of colourful, loose furniture have been placed in the living area and study to contrast with the wood elements and light colour tones. Overall, a unique design infused with rich colours and textures.
