Local News From North East Edinburgh Inverleith locals launch a campaign to end park strife
Stockbridge’s very own radio station!
Friends of Inverlieth Park have launched a new campaign to refurbish the children’s play park as the tired-looking equipment is either broken or in bad condition. Stockbridge resident and mum-of-two, Selena Barr is leading the project. The Friends of Inverleith Park are currently conducting a survey of play park users in an attempt to secure funding in the near future and want the views of local residents to be taken into consideration.
Edinburgh’s Mix1Radio will begin broadcasting as an internet radio station later this month. It’s the brainchild of local broadcaster, musician and designer Sam Hinks. He is joined by some excellent broadcasting chums as the station prepares to launch itself on the Stockbridge community and surrounding villages!

In a bold move that sees the globally beloved book club show resilience and innovation in a time of retail uncertainty, founder Rachel Wood invites bibliophiles down the rabbit hole and into Stockbridge’s newest page-turning hotspot.
Cullerton’s are thrilled to be shortlisted as finalists by The Herald Property Awards for Scotland 2021 powered by Property Studios, in the category for Estate Agency of the Year. “We are delighted for the nomination and look forward to the awards on the 30th September 2021. EDINBURGH’S HOUSING MARKET IS BUOYANT
A
fter an incredible first 2 quarters of the year that saw property sales in Edinburgh increase by more than 50% on the previous year. There has been a slowing down recently, especially for flats, with supply outweighing demand. The main reason for this is the influx or Airbnb/holiday lets coming back into the market place due to the changes in legislation that Edinburgh Council have implemented. The housing market though still remains particularly buoyant with demand outweighing supply. There is just not enough good quality stock in the traditional Edinburgh hotspots, such as Blackhall, Craigleith, Ravelston, Murrayfield, Trinty, Morningside, Newington, The Grange etc. Hopefully once our children return to school after the summer holidays the situation will change in the autumn before the seasonal downturn. Edinburgh though has remained as a popular destination for investors, and owner 6 NEM
occupiers alike, and I see no reason for this to majorly change anytime soon. The pandemic has caused certain markets in the UK to ground to a halt , especially after the Stamp Duty holiday, but we remain on track for another very successful year, and hopefully that will continue through 2022. Things to do in your garden With summer drawing to a close and Autumn almost upon us here are some useful tips to keep your garden flourishing in the new season. Check the lawn and ensure that any weeds sprayed last month are dying, if not repeat the process, also areate the lawn with a garden fork and scatter lime onto it as this will sweeten the soil. Finally rejuvenate a tired lawn with autumn feed. Trim hedged before the onset of winter. Take new plant cuttings. 10 cm cuttings can be taken from hardwood herbs such as Rosemary or Bay. Remove the lower leaves, dip into hormone rooting powder and pot in small containers
with a good potting mix. Keep moist and shelter from strong wind and sun. Gather fallen leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps and shredded prunings. Layer in the compost bin, turning periodically to allow air in. Don’t overload with one ingredient, keep a good mix. Divide evergreen perennials. Lift from soil, divide at root and replant in well conditioned soil.

common mistakes to avoid when buying tiles.
At Edinburgh Tile Studio we offer an extensive range of beautiful natural stone, porcelain, and ceramic, as well as an eye-catching selection of handmade and hand-painted tiles, mosaics, encaustics, and Victorian floor tiles. We’re on hand to offer design assistance and to guide you through the extensive range of colours, shapes, sizes and patterns available, to help you create your dream home. Choosing tiles is an exciting time, although also a task where you need to have your wits about you to ensure you get it right first time! To help with this, we’ve listed below 3 of the most common mistakes to try and avoid when buying tiles: 3 Common Mistakes to Avoid
1
Not ordering a sample first: Seeing a sample in your own home is the best way to help you envisage how the tiles will look, and to see how well they go with your environment and lighting.
10 NEM
2 Not planning the layout and ordering
enough tiles: It’s important to consider how you would like to lay the tiles, as this can influence the overall effect, so by creating a rough design / sketch beforehand this can be hugely helpful. This process will also help you to determine how many tiles are needed, and therefore, help you to order the correct amount. We usually recommend ordering an additional 10% to allow for cuts and wastage, and for some patterns such as the herringbone layout, we would suggest increasing this to 15%, to allow for those extra fiddly cuts. Ensuring you have the right amount of tiles when ordering will prevent any potential delays and additional costs, and will also ensure you have the same batch to complete your project.
3 Choosing price over quality: As the saying
goes, “buy cheap, buy twice”. Investing in lower cost tiles may save you money initially, though they usually need to be replaced more frequently than those of better quality.

A
t over eight metres tall and several tonnes in weight, Trachycarpus princeps isn’t the daintiest of botanical specimens. Nonetheless, the palm, a rarity in cultivation and, therefore, one of the most important trees at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE), is about to be transplanted as part of the Garden’s Edinburgh Biomes project. The project, perhaps the most visionary in the Garden’s 351-year history, will see the much-needed restoration of the iconic Victorian Palm Houses, 1960’s Front Range and behind-the-scenes research Glasshouses. To enable the refurbishment to begin, earlier this year, the Garden’s team of dedicated horticulturists began the delicate process of decanting an incredible forty thousand plants from in and around the Glasshouses. After years of careful planning and consideration of each species’ growing habits, size and temperament, thousands of plants including gingers, orchids and cacti were gently removed from the Glasshouses and transported to new homes at the Garden’s Nursery site. Although some plants were too large to move, a successful programme of propagation will ensure their legacy through their progeny. Focus is now on the removal of large palm trees from the Victorian Temperate Palm House. Ranging from the three-metre tall clumping palm Chamaerops humilis to the towering Trachycarpus princeps, each tree will be dug out carefully by hand then raised from the ground using a system of ropes and A-frames. Laid horizontally, they will be decanted to the Temperate Lands Glasshouse where they will remain throughout the Edinburgh Biomes project. Construction on the project will begin in Autumn 2021 with the restoration of the Glasshouses and the creation of new facilities at the Nursery site. An energy centre will help
to significantly reduce the organisation’s carbon emissions, while a new plant health suite will invest research into combatting the increasing numbers of plant pathogens in the environment. The final part of the project will see the creation of a stunning new Glasshouse that will revitalise the entire Glasshouse Experience. While the Garden has undertaken the large scale decant of plants in the past, it has never before moved so many species in such a tight time frame. It is a testament to how vitally important this project is to the preservation of Scotland’s Living Collection. Radio As the countdown begins to a new community radio station launch, we explore what that will mean for Stockbridge and the nearby, surrounding villages.
16 NEM
It’s not every day a new radio station begins to broadcast, however Edinburgh is on the cusp of having a new, Stockbridge-based community radio station in the heart of this Bohemian village. Edinburgh’s Mix1Radio will serve its listeners with entertainment and local information.
o Gaga! F ortunately Stockbridge, Comely Bank and other neighbouring villages have a fabulous community spirit. You only have to walk along Stockbridge main street to find that out. So, with the community in mind local broadcaster, musician and designer Sam Hinks decided the time was right to start a station. “Experience is very important in the radio industry, although enthusiasm and ability to learn are just as important. We want to attract the best people to entertain and inform the local communities as well as align ourselves firmly with the individuals, businesses and organisations that make up the surrounding area.” Mix1Radio’s most important job is to engage with its listeners
and be involved as much as possible with the communities. To that end they have set up a basement studio in the heart of Stockbridge, with a meeting area and admin facilities for the station to grow. The station also hope that events and training will be a part of its community role. So, if you feel you want to be involved with radio, get in touch with Mix1Radio.They are an all encompassing company that will welcome you with open arms. Look for the station to start broadcasting as an internet station (with local Edinburgh city DAB to come soon) later in the month. Louise Hinks gives some advice on skincare to keep our skin glowing and healthy
18 NEM
Power Up... to Glow Up! Just a few years ago terms like Retinol, Alpha Hydroxy Acids & Hyaluronic Acid were mostly used by dermatologists or hardcore skin care users looking for the next big thing to turn back the clock. Add those to Vitamin E and stabilised Vitamin C and your skin will say, thank you. Are all ingredients created equal? No they are not. More importantly is it necessary to use powerful ingredients like these? In my experience, if you want to keep your skin glowing and healthy, then, yes you do. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s), also known as Glycolic, are fruit acids that help exfoliate the surface layer of the skin. They remove dead skin cells and leave your skin more radiant. Phytic Acid is also an AHA derived from grains, is gentle on the skin and has antioxidant properties. Hyaluronic Acid supports the skins protective moisture barrier to retain hydration, helping to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A, can be found in varying strengths, is fantastic for ironing out wrinkles and keeping the skin smooth but beware, many skins don’t tolerate Retinol very well. However, a fabulous plant based, new kid on the block is making waves in the
skincare world – meet Bakuchiol. The effects of Retinol but much gentler on the skin. If you like your skincare to be cruelty free, plant based, vegan certified but bursting with clever clinical science, this Power Duo might be just for you. Let me introduce you to Arbonne Dermresults illuminating skin therapy concentrate, with 15% stabilised vitamin C, 2% Bakuchiol and 1% Ferulic Acid, a powerhouse vitamin duo of C and E, all working together to help improve the overall look of elasticity, skin radiance and firmness. Its partner in crime, Arbonne Dermresults daily Radiance Peel Pads, feature Caviar Lime Extract to support natural cell renewal of the skin, through exfoliation, plus Hyaluronic acid and Phytic acid to help slough away dead surface skin cells. If you would like more information, please get in touch. I can recommend a combination of products just right for you. Indian Prison Dhurries The end of the 19th century in late colonial India bears witness to a revival of textile industry and carpet weaving. Interestingly enough, many products of this re-emerging economy, fine quality rugs in intricate designs, came from Indian prison factories. The so-called Jeeli or jail carpet was not a new idea; earlier, in the 16th century, Mughal Emperor Akbar is said to have brought skilled weavers from Persia to teach the art to inmates in Mughal jails across the Subcontinent. The idea appealed later to British authorities who decided to continue the Mughal tradition in the 19th and early 20th century. Apart from the obvious economic reasons, weaving was viewed as part of prisoners’ ‘reform’ therapy. Jeelis were produces in a variety of styles; opulent wool pile carpets emulating ancient Persian designs, or simple kilim-like Dhurries, an Indian tradition from the time immemorial. It is however the humble cotton yarn dhurries that have of late become most coveted home décor floor coverings and a popular choice of many designers in the west. 24 NEM

How Green is your Energy? With energy companies increasingly promoting their green credentials, how can you tell how green the energy you are buying actually is? A green tariff means that some or all of the electricity you buy is ‘matched’ by purchases of renewable energy that your energy supplier makes on your behalf. These could come from a variety of renewable sources such as wind farms and hydroelectric power stations. Your supplier should let you know the mix, and also what proportion of your supply is renewable. Some tariffs will be ‘100% renewable’, others will offer a percentage of the total. It’s not clear whether switching to a green tariff will have an impact on global carbon dioxide emissions or not. Renewable sources feed the electricity they generate into the electricity grid, as do coal and gas-power stations. The electricity comes out in the mix that was generated that way. You use what you use. Green tariffs are no substitute for using less energy. The less electricity you use, the less has to come from gas and coal, and the less carbon dioxide is emitted. Run your washing machine at a lower temperature, boil less water, install smart meters or use LED energy saving bulbs will reduce your carbon dioxide whether you’re on a green tariff or not. That’s why it’s so important to reduce the electricity you use wherever possible.
Source and for more energy saving tips check out energysavingtrust.org.uk Over 5 years one supplier, Utility Warehouse, has been helping to reduce their customers energy consumption and therefore their bills and their carbon footprint by replacing all a customers bulbs with LED bulbs for FREE.
