February’s issue kicks off with style guru Mario Tricoci, who began his illustrious career in the western suburbs more than 50 years ago in Villa Park, and now serves many local clients out of his Oak Brook salon, in addition to his many Midwest locations. Mario talks with Hinsdale Magazine about style, and how it’s more than just a haircut and blow-dry. Read about his challenges and ascent to becoming one of the most successful independent salon owners in the country. As you will read later (p. 42), Mario provides our readers insight into his entrepreneurial vision and his unwavering commitment to his trade and “guests”. As Mario put it, “That’s why I can share my craft with everyone, because no one can copy it—no one can steal it from you.’’ In this issue, we take style from here to the Oscars for our readers to get an insight into trendy things to wear. Get a glimpse of some famous places that were filmed right here in Chicagoland before becoming Oscar-winning films. Remember the movie “The Color of Money” with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise? The beginning of the film was shot just 15 minutes east of Hinsdale in Berwyn’s FitzGerald’s Nightclub on 6615 W. Roosevelt Road. Read about it in our style section, beginning on p. 36. In HM Sports, I never saw a triple-overtime basketball game at any level, but a sextuple overtime? I watched the Hinsdale Central boys basketball team in a nail-biter with contributing editor Mike Ellis, and what a game it was! While the Red Devils did not pull out a victory, they certainly deserve a lot of credit against a tough DePaul Prep team they hosted in the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic on Dec. 28. Our staff is looking into the history books to see if there ever was a six-overtime game at Hinsdale Central or in IHSA competition. If you know

As a junior last year, he started in a state championship game for the Redwings, and this year, he is hoping to return to the big IHSA class 4A stage. In case you didn’t know, the Redwings 2011 basketball program produced star Frank Kaminsky, who went on to star in the NCAA Tournament for the University of Wisconsin, and now plays for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA. Don’t forget to attend the Robert Crown Center for Health Education‘s (RCC) fifth annual Happy to Be Me! luncheon on Feb. 25 in support of helping girls develop self-esteem, while bonding with the important women in their lives. Hinsdale Central boys basketball fell to DePaul Prep in heart-wrenching fashion, 64-62, in six overtimes in the second round of the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic on Dec. 28. In game-time, the contest spanned 56 minutes, or a game and three quarters, with many student-athletes on both sides playing NBA-type minutes. Central senior guard Jack Hoiberg led all scorers with 32 points, accounting for more than half of his team’s points. In quintuple overtime, i.e. the fifth overtime, it appeared that DePaul might finally walk out with a win, leading by three points with less than a minute remaining. But Hoiberg made a layup to cut the deficit to 59-58 with 40 seconds remaining, and after a Rams free throw, senior forward Danny Ahern sunk a mid-range field goal with ten seconds left to force a sixth overtime. On many occasions, games with multiple overtimes actually swell into miniature routs, with one team gaining the upper hand and extending its advantage through fatigue, a foul advantage or a series of free throws down the stretch. This contest, however, was destined to remain tight throughout— even in the waning moments of sextuple overtime. With the game tied at 62-62, DePaul senior forward Matthew Tonkel tipped a miss in at the buzzer, as the Rams prevailed, 64-62, in thrilling fashion.

How does oral sedation work? Before your procedure begins, a small dose of antianxiety medication is placed under the tongue. As the medication takes hold, you enter a state of relaxation. Throughout treatment, you’ll experience a reduced perception of pain. Some medications also have an amnesiac effect, leaving patients with few memories of the procedure. Will I personally benefit from sedation? Consider the way you usually feel at the dental office. If you have generalized anxiety, prior traumatic dental experiences, fear of needles or sounds from instruments, the need for significant dental work, difficulty staying still for an extended period, sensitive teeth, or a bad gag reflex, oral sedation is ideal. Is oral sedation better than IV sedation? Needle-phobic patients find that IV sedation actually triggers their anxiety. This is the last thing we want from your sedation; starting the procedure on edge is not conducive to a comfortable experience. Instead of facing a needle or the sight of blood, all you need do is place a tablet under your tongue. Orally administered medication has a longer onset, but the stress-free process makes it more than worth the wait. Am I a candidate for sedation dentistry? According to Marissa Wilger, manager at Toni Patisserie & Cafe in Hinsdale, buttercream cakes are making a comeback. Offering a more organic finish than fondant-covered cakes, today’s buttercream cakes are finished in a multitude of textures, often in white-on-white, pastels or metallics.
Custom couple monograms (three letters) or duograms (two letters, first names only) start with the invitation, and are sprinkled throughout the wedding, from the menu to the napkins, the placecards to the gift bags, says Ashley Killpack, owner of Ashley’s Custom Stationery in Hinsdale. Cold cuts and cured meats. Deli or pre-packaged turkey can have as much as 1,050 milligrams of sodium per serving. Some sodium is added, because these meats would spoil quickly without the added sodium solution, but it doesn’t need to be excessive. If you compare nutrition labels and look for lower sodium varieties, you will find that they are out there. Pizza. Pizza isn’t exactly known for being a healthy food, but you’re probably thinking the big concerns here are saturated fat and calories. But did you know that one slice may have up to 760 milligrams of sodium? It doesn’t take a lot of math to realize that a few slices can send sodium skyrocketing. Top your slices with more veggies and less cheese, and swap in a salad for some of your slices. Soup. Soup can’t be bad if mom gave it to you for the sniffles, right? Well, one cup of canned chicken noodle soup can contain up to 940 milligrams of sodium. Make a big batch of your own and freeze the leftovers, or add plain frozen veggies to a lower-sodium variety of canned soup, so there is less sodium per serving. Breads and rolls. A lot of bread doesn’t even taste salty, but one piece can have as much as 230 milligrams of sodium. If you have toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and dinner rolls, that can add up quickly. Thinner slices tend to have fewer calories, and less sodium as well. Chicken. Reasonable portions of lean, skinless grilled chicken are great. But nuggets tend to have a lot of added salt, and even fresh poultry is often injected with added sodium solutions. Just three ounces of frozen and breaded nuggets (about the size of the palm of your hand) can add nearly 600 milligrams of sodium. Check the label to find out if your poultry has been plumped up with a salt solution—a four-ounce serving shouldn’t have more than 100 milligrams of sodium.
2 3 The Salty Six Surprising foods that add the most sodium to diets Did you know that a lot of common foods add more sodium to your diet than you might think? It’s not just the French fries and pretzels you need to watch out for. That’s why the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association created the “Salty Six”—to show you the top six foods that contribute the most sodium to diets. Even though these foods don’t necessarily taste salty, the sodium they have can add up when eaten frequently. And most of the sodium being digested (about three quarters) is already in the food before purchased. That means that it’s not as much about how we handle the salt shaker as it is about what is already in our food. Take a look at the foods in the Salty Six. Too much sodium is bad news for your heart health. It’s bad news for your appearance, too: extra sodium can make your body retain water, which can make your face feel puffy, give you bags under your eyes, increase swelling in your fingers, and make your jeans look and feel tighter. A key point is that different brands and restaurant versions of the same kinds of foods can vary widely in sodium content. Compare nutrition labels, and choose products with the lowest amounts of sodium per serving. You can also look for the American Heart Association’s Heart-Check mark at grocery stores and some restaurants to find foods that can be part of an overall healthy diet. With a little nutrition label know-how, you’ll be well on your way to healthier choices.

insdale Magazine met with Mario Tricoci at his Chicago lakefront penthouse. The style guru welcomed us as guests, and offered refreshments and a tour of his home with his wife, Cheryl, when we sat down in their living room overlooking Navy Pier and Lake Shore Drive. This visionary and entrepreneur has a confident, but grounded demeanor with his streaky and silver hair making a stark contrast against his black shirt. Now in his early 70s, Tricoci rarely cuts hair, but is often seen at some of his Chicago area day spas teaching, inspiring and still learning from others in the industry. Tricoci sees style as “ever-changing” and a “way of life.” “Style does not have to necessarily be about hair and make-up—it’s an attitude as well,” said Tricoci as he told HM about his ascent from humble beginnings to becoming a trailblazer in his industry. “I was already cutting hair back home in Italy; however, I started as a hair dresser in Chicago before opening a place with my brother and partner Frank in a Villa Park shopping center in 1962.”
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS As a young man, Tricoci grew up in northern Calabria in Italy, and became a young apprentice at the age of 13, before moving to Toronto. It was when he went to visit a relative in Chicago that he met John Edward, who owned a premier hair salon on Michigan Ave. “There were pretty girls there, and I said, ‘Can I do one of their hair?’ ” Tricoci said, laughing. “John said, ‘No—but if you want to work here, let’s get you a green card;’ and I was on my way to Chicago with my family.” It didn’t take long before clients came from all over Chicagoland to have ‘’the cut’’ by Mario. “In this industry, you are forever a student,” he said. “Styles change—your attitude changes. Your point of view on fashion can change every six months, so you must not hesitate to change if you want to be at the pinnacle of your game. You must challenge yourself to learn more.” Today, Tricoci has 14 hair salons and day spas in the
Chicago area, which also include more than a dozen Mario Tricoci University schools in Illinois and Indiana. He has a legion of stylists and employees that total more than 1,400. In his 35th year, Tricoci remains passionate about teaching and inspiring young stylists.

“I really believe I never had a job—I feel I had a career, and which means you work 24/7,” he said. “There is always more out there, and in this business, it’s always a challenge, and it’s vital that we stay green. I tell my students if you’re green, you are growing, and if you’re ripe, you rot.’’ It was that kind of attitude and determination that led Tricoci’s Arlington Heights location to become the first salon and day spa in the Midwest that pampered guests in private, tranquil rooms, awaiting them with comfortable robes, a Vichy shower and a hydrotherapy room. Tricoci recalled opening the first Arlington Heights location with his wife, Cheryl. “Cheryl and I went on a holiday in Montecatini, Italy, and we wanted to have an experience of a spa,” he said. “At the time (about 30 years ago), we just had facial rooms at our locations. On our holiday, Cheryl had a facial, manicure, pedicure and other treatments, and she said, ‘Wouldn’t [it] be great to bring this to our guests?’ “And thus, we started the day spa services in Arlington Heights, and later, Oak Brook. Our attitude was to have our guests no matter what background, to enjoy a holiday one day at a time, and come home feeling rejuvenated.’’ The couple first met in 1970, when Cheryl quickly became a catalyst to Mario’s creativity and energy. “She was there during the humble beginnings, and enabled me to do my craft creatively when we started Mario Tricoci Continued on page 44

Another person who really inspired me was Vidal Sassoon. He was a man who would say this is what I do. This is who I am and this is how it’s done. I try to follow that,” says Tricoci.
Hair Salon in 1977,” Tricoci said. Tricoci reminisced about the long days and nights that ended with the couple bringing home robes to wash and press for the next day’s guests. He recalled the night the couple took a gamble and “went for broke,” when he came home with the excitement of a new location inside Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg at a time when most salons were located inside of department stores. Tricoci found a small space on the far end of the mall, which was not an ideal location, lacking premium foot traffic. “We decided to make lemonade out of lemons,’’ Cheryl Tricoci said. “People thought we were crazy, and said we couldn’t make money in a location like that. We told our guests for your convenience, we wanted to be close to the parking lot, so you don’t have to walk all the way through the mall.”
MEETING THE CHALLENGES With business booming and their client base increasing, they moved to the center of the mall and business kept growing. “Mario had this vision to create a very special environment, and not just a beauty shop,” Cheryl said. “He knew how difficult it was to lease space, and he worked hard, and we became the first salon in North America to open in a shopping mall, when all the hair salons or beauty salons were in anchor stores.’’ Mario Tricoci reflected on the hesitation and uncertainty of designing their new 900-square-foot location at Woodfield. “Cheryl said, ‘If we are going to do this, we have to get a great interior designer.’ ” The Tricocis were excited about Richard Himmel, who was an elite designer in Chicago. “I was so impressed, but he didn’t want take our project,” Tricoci said. “He said, ‘I’ll think about it, but I’m going on a trip to Milano, and when I come back, I’ll let you know.’ It cost $22,000 just for the design alone.—I could have bought a salon for that much at the time! “Cheryl said to me, ‘If you are going to have a salon to cut and style hair, then you should have a salon that reflects that vision.’ “ The stylish salon had elephant gray colors throughout its three levels, and visitors could see the entire place from every level. ‘’At the time, it was the most photographic hair salon in the country,” Tricoci said. Cheryl covered every detail with Himmel, and remembered a pivotal conversation in 1976 with the renowned designer when shopping for expensive material and fabrics. “When [he] presented all these ideas, I said, ‘We can’t do that; in three years, it’s going to be trashed,’ “ she said. “He

just looked at me and said, ‘If you can’t afford to recover everything in this salon and put in new carpeting, then you should close your doors’—and guess what, he was so right.’’ The couple’s vision became an empire today that includes 50 Mario Tricoci Hair Salon & Day Spas, Elizabeth Arden Red Door product lines, and the Mario Tricoci University locations. EARLY INSPIRATIONS Tricoci credits his success in part to his inspiration from Italian Aldo Dicola, a fellow hairdresser from Italy that he met in 1968, when Tricoci was a hair stylist for United States Olympic team and Dicola for the Italian team. “I admired his work, his couture of fashion and his attitude,” Tricoci said. “He was very influential to me. ‘’Another person who really inspired me was Vidal Sassoon. We wanted our students to learn what took me 50 years.” GUESTS COME FIRST So, what approach does Tricoci recommend when a guest comes into his salon with her own unique features? ‘’That’s a great question, because we often talk about that with our students,” he said. “The consultation is the most vital part of the service, simply because a consultation is negotiating with your guest the end result. So, you want to say to the guest, ‘This is what the end result is going to be.’— Then you have to deliver. “However, you need to understand an oval face, the jaw or high cheek bones, thin face and so on. “Then, the real gratification comes from making people happy—that’s priceless. he Community House’s annual Band Together event will be held on Feb. 11 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Band Together benefits the organization’s Willowbrook Corner Youth Learning Program, which provides support and educational resources for children and families living in this low-income neighborhood in unincorporated Willowbrook. Many families living in the Willowbrook Corner neighborhood live below the poverty line, contributing to challenges that include gaps in academic achievement. Band Together has been an ongoing event for the past five years, and it includes live music from bands, drinks, food, dancing and a raffle. “Community House has supported this program for a long time—about 20 years—, but it was only recently that they needed to raise additional money to fund it,” said Alyssa Guido, co-leader of the host committee for Band Together. “The volunteers at The Community House were the ones to come up with a fundraiser.” The goals of the Willowbrook Corner program are to help families and their children improve their educational performance, practice positive decision-making skills in a supportive environment, and provide learning opportunities year-round. “This event provides a sense of community and everyone coming together for a good cause,” said Trayce Biancalana, co-leader of the host committee for Band Together. ... “The first year, I didn’t even know who the band was, and there were probably 75 people that attended the event. Then, we grew the event,

KoenigRubloff grants $75,000 to Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity and The Sunshine Kids

he KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation, a nonprofit organization affiliated with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group, has announced that it will grant $75,000 to Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that partners with individuals in need of affordable housing throughout the Chicago region, and The Sunshine Kids, a national non-profit organization that offers a variety of programs for children that are battling cancer. Grant funds were raised in 2016 through the support of hundreds of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group agent and employee contributions. This brings the year-end total of donations that the foundation received in 2016 to $90,000. “Through the unbelievable generosity of our agents, employees and the community, we are so honored to be able to present checks to these two incredible organizations that are very close to our hearts,” said Joe Stacy, chairman of the KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation. “The amount of joy that these organizations bring to the people they touch is so gratifying to witness. Several dozen local ladies shopped at the Green Goddess Boutique in Hinsdale to support Children’s Home + Aid (CH + A) at the annual Sherry Party on Dec. 1. Organized by the Hinsdale auxiliary of CH + A, the Sherry Party is an annual Christmastime tradition through which funds are raised for the nonprofit organization, which serves about 40,000 children and families across Illinois. Each guest is required to bring a gift as a donation to CH + A, and Helm said the auxiliary generally receives requests for older children, as it is common for donors to submit gifts geared towards younger children. Elyce Rembos, owner of the Green Goddess Boutique, also donates 20 percent of the store’s proceeds that day to the Hinsdale auxiliary. hen Liam Lyman of Clarendon Hills made the decision to attend Benet Academy after graduating from Clarendon Hills Middle School (CHMS), he was seeking the opportunity to play basketball for an established program under a renowned head coach. Little did he know that as a junior, he would be starting on a team playing in the

IHSA class 4A state championship game. Lyman, whose father walked on the basketball team at Northern Illinois University, began playing basketball when he was five or six years old, and started travel ball in third grade. “I’ve been basically playing basketball my whole life,” he said. Lyman said he played other sports growing up, but enjoyed basketball the most, and thus, decided to continue with it. “I’ve always really loved the game, and
I wanted to get better,” he said. After playing on his dad’s travel team, Lyman received his first taste of representing his school on the CHMS squad in seventh and eighth grade. “It was a really cool experience to play for my school,” he said. “I had never done it before, but it was really fun.” Upon graduating from CHMS, Lyman said basketball was a significant factor in his decision to attend Benet. “The program that coach [Gene] Heidkamp has set up—he’s had a lot of great players,” he said, adding that he was also impressed with the school’s academic offerings. During his sophomore year, Lyman practiced with the varsity team, and the following year, he earned the opportunity to play at the varsity level. He said the adjustment was substantial, having to grow accustomed to five talented players on the floor all the time, as opposed to just a few at the lower levels. “I knew that he was a tough, hardnosed kid that could shoot the ball,”
Heidkamp said. Entering the 2015-16 season, expectations were muted for the Redwings, having recently graduated standout big men Sean O’Mara (2014) and Frank Kaminsky (2011), who acquired national prominence for his starring role on the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team, and now plays for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets. “Outside of our team, a lot of people didn’t think we were going to be that good,” Lyman said. “We lost our leading scorer. ... But we really came together, and we had a lot of guys that wanted to come out and play.” After losing just once in the regular season, Benet entered the state tournament as the top seed in its sectional. As expected, the Redwings won their regional, and then reached the sectional final, following a 60-43 win over Hinsdale South. Lyman said the single-elimination nature of the tournament was an adjustment, but felt that Heidkamp readied him and his teammates to be successful each game. “Coach Heidkamp got us really prepared for that,” he said. ... “It all happened so fast. You’ve just got to focus on one game at a time, and hope you can pull each one out.” In the sectional final against York High School, Lyman recalled the Dukes rallying to level the score in the fourth quarter, before he buried a crucial threepointer that reestablished the lead and momentum for Benet. The Redwings went on to win that game, 61-55. After defeating Joliet West in the super-sectional, Benet prepared to square off with perennial powerhouse Simeon Career Academy. When you think of Simeon, basketball is likely the first image that comes to mind. Between 2010 and 2013, Simeon’s boys basketball squad claimed four
consecutive IHSA class 4A state championships, led by star forward Jabari Parker, who now plays for the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks. “Growing up, you see Simeon with Derrick Rose and Jabari Parker, and suddenly, you’re playing [their school] in the semifinals,” Lyman said. What are your challenges? Things happen. Your success path can get blocked; unforeseen obstacles can arrive during your journey. Expect the unexpected as you drive toward your goals—things will happen that you never anticipated. By now, you have well-defined visions and macro goals for 2017. What can keep you from obtaining what you want and desire? What external and internal factors can erode your confidence? Which ones can lower your relaxation and enjoyment, and wreak havoc on your positive intentions? These problems can be detrimental if they’re not addressed. Real difficulties and obstacles can derail your objectives, and restrict your overall progress. They can cloud your reasoning, and obliterate all hope, belief and expectancy. Most people have problems; some have a lifetime of problems. It is the champion, however, that has eliminated the “P” word from his or her vocabulary. Do not utter this negative word. You have challenges—meet them head-on. It is the word “challenge” that inspires, motivates and encourages the champion. A challenge is something that has confronted our desire and need to accomplish a goal or vision. A problem, on the other hand, acts as a barrier, an obstacle and sometimes a formidable roadblock to what we want. Problems conjure up thoughts and feelings of despair, dread, foreboding, doubt and fear. What keeps you up at night? What are the main challenges for each of your life arenas? What seems to be in your way? There are many ways to meet a challenge head-on. First, identify the exact nature of the challenge. Is the challenge another person, the economy, the situation, condition or the circumstance? Or is the challenge your own thoughts, beliefs and expectancies? Is the challenge a combination of these? The challenge may not be what it appears, so look at it from different angles. When you’ve walked around it 360 degrees, make your decision on how to meet the challenge with your intuition (just in case you missed something). Some challenges can miraculously disappear. When confronted with any challenge, do not react to it in a negative way. Be calm and mindless for at least 90 seconds—no reaction should be your initial reaction. Breathe when a challenge arrives. Immediately lower your breaths per minute from 15 to 17 to a “champion level” of six to eight. This may take some training on your part. Make up your mind that you control you. Allow no situation, condition or circumstance to influence your thoughts in a negative way.
Sometimes, the challenge can be formidable, and it may even seem insurmountable. Here are four options to meet the challenge: 1. Use the power of replacement. When the challenge pops into your mind, swiftly replace it with the vision or goal that it is blocking. Re-commit to what you want. Make it clear and concise, and make it vivid. Replace the mental images of the challenge within seconds of its arrival. 2. Sleep on it. Make no quick decisions unless time is of the essence. As you drift off to sleep, envision only what you want. 3. How do you eat an elephant? That’s right—it’s one bite at a time. Break the challenge into manageable parts with realistic timelines. From coaching many marathon runners, it’s best to break your long run into smaller segments. And when you think you can’t finish the race, meet the challenge by running to the next tree or visible landmark. Take it one small destination at a time—“next” is your battle cry. 4. Act like it’s not there; do not obsess over it. Do nothing. Keep moving towards your objective. This is not always an option; however, it’s worked hundreds times over the last four decades. Free yourself from your problems by getting rid of the shackles that problems bring. Remove their handcuffs of negativity. Wean yourself from the dreaded “P” word. Do not allow it to find its way back into your mind. Champions lay down the problem, and pick up the challenge. By replacing the word “problem” with the word “challenge,” you can find inspiration, encouragement and motivation for maneuvering around, over, under or through these roadblocks. Seeking solutions, answers, strategies and tactics to your challenges is the champion’s mindset. Life is full of challenges. They arrive in all forms, shapes and sizes, and sometimes they appear with no warning. Getting ambushed with challenges can place you on the defensive. They can cripple your desire and hobble your ambition if you allow them to. Commit to meeting these potential challenges head-on. Immunize your mind from potential challenges. Fallen trees do occasionally block the road, and at a time when you’re in a hurry. What do you do? Get past the tree and back on your journey— period. With free will, you can find solutions to any and all of your challenges. Everything is possible. Let nothing get in the way of reaching your visions and dreams—nothing. You control your destiny, even if a tree is blocking your path. n
