In this issue, we revisit the events and people highlighted by Hinsdale Magazine in 2017. From community events to sporting events, we covered some memorable moments. The 12U Hinsdale Little League All-Stars won their third straight state title, and came within one game of playing in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn. The Hinsdale Central boys basketball team played a six-overtime game, only to fall short in the final seconds of the thriller. And local volunteers set record attendance and fundraising amounts for their charities and non-profit organizations.

Why is the dental world making the shift from “cosmetic” to “esthetic”? Cosmetic dentistry has long

been the standard for patients seeking changes to the appearance of their front teeth. But it neglects to consider the full effects that treatment might have on the patient’s health. In this way, cosmetic dentistry is treatment that improves a smile’s appearance alone. Esthetic dentistry has a different focus: to improve a smile’s function, enhancing its appearance along the way. This type of treatment offers visual and physical benefits – something that patients really appreciate. The results are noticeable superficially, but extend deeper. As a dentist and an educator, how have you embraced esthetics? I’ve been practicing esthetic dentistry since 1990, and have made a commitment to educating other dentists on this branch of treatment. I’m proud to lecture internationally in over 30 cities per year, training hundreds of dentists to place minimally invasive veneers. 2017 will be remembered as a momentous year for Hinsdale. In addition to the customary festivities in the western suburbs and in the city, the 12U All-Stars of the Hinsdale Little League advanced to within a single game of the Little League World Series. In our annual Year in Review segment, we recap this eventful year in the community.

he year opened in January with the “Light Up the Night” benefit, organized by the Clarendon Hills chapter of the Infant Welfare Society auxiliary, while the Hinsdale Historical Society Women’s Board hosted its luncheon in preparation for the kitchen walk in spring. In early February, the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) took its benefit to the city for the fourth straight year, and “Amore” raised the bar for a high-achieving club that had already set a rather high one. Not only did the HJWC raise a record-breaking $275,000 for its beneficiary, HCS Family Services, but benefit managing chair Irene Wood wowed the audience by booking Grammy Award-winning artist Lil’ John to perform during the night. Meanwhile, the Mend A Heart Foundation, launched by Clarendon Hills residents Brian and Bridget O’Meara, celebrated its tenth anniversary with “Brewfest” at The Community House (TCH).

The Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club raised a record-breaking $275,000 for HCS Family Services at “Amore,” the HJWC annual benefit in 2017.

arch marked the annual return of Tablescapes, supporting the Hinsdale chapter of the Infant Welfare Society auxiliary. The theme for the luncheon was “celebrate,” which was reflected in the creative displays of elegance and sophistication that were exuded in the tablescapes chapter members furnished. In April, some of the same folks who showcased their sartorial palette at benefits and luncheons traded in dresses and sport-coats for T-shirts and tennis shoes, turning out early on a Sunday morning to support TCH’s Charlie’s Gift Autism Center through Walk the Walk for Autism. And for those that missed that exercise opportunity, Wellness House hosted its annual walk the following Sunday morning, raising more than $600,000 towards its non-medical programs and services for cancer patients and their families. That same month of May, the Hinsdale auxiliary of Children’s Home + Aid continued its “Derby Day” benefit tradition, while dozens of ladies learned that sometimes it’s worth it to pay a premium, seizing the chance to tour the Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk in style aboard one of five trolleys that cruised around Hinsdale on a Friday morning in mid-May.

he Memorial Day parade and ceremony marked the unofficial beginning of summer, which continued across the street from the memorial building in Burlington Park at Uniquely Thursdays from June through August. On the other side of Ill. Rte. 83, Clarendon Hills kicked off summer with Daisy Days and the Daisy Dash over Father’s Day weekend, followed up by six nights of Dancin’ in the Street. Down at the Burr Ridge Village Center, the Village of Burr Ridge continued its Concerts on the Green on Friday nights, while thousands ambled onto the Oak Brook Polo Grounds for the Taste of Oak Brook, as well as to watch polo matches through early fall. sually, the neighborhood quiets down after the Hinsdale Fourth of July parade, but this year, the 12U All-Stars from the Hinsdale Little League accelerated the summer heat to a fever pitch, capturing their third consecutive state championship. This allowed the squad to advance to the Great Lakes Regional tournament in Westfield, Ind., where it won two games, before falling to a team from Michigan in the championship—which was televised nationally on ESPN. The last time Hinsdale as a community was featured on national television was— well, to the best of our knowledge, actually, never.

ith fall brought a return to the classrooms, and Hinsdale Central scrambled to pull together the earliest Homecoming in recent memory in mid-September. The fall also included a pair of firsts: the Wine, Women & Shoes gala benefiting Clarendon Hillsbased Scoreboard Charities, and Bridge Communities’ A Chair Affair fundraiser’s first stop in Hinsdale at The Community House this October. West suburbanites later flocked downtown in their evening finery for the annual Wellness House ball, before more outlandish outfits were on display at the Hinsdale Humane Society’s “Howl-oween Ball” in Oak Brook. At the costume ball, the humane society unveiled its plans for the recently-acquired Robert Crown Center building in Hinsdale, which will function as its new home starting in late 2018.

BEAUTIFUL SKIN Natural Skin Care from the Inside Out

Being a dermatologist is like being a gardener. We prescribe skin care to fertilize the skin so that when we sow our skin care treatments our results will flourish. But lush skin cannot be found in a face cream alone. A holistic approach to skin care requires regular cardio exercise, a healthy diet, and daily sun protection to yield great skin. The benefits of following the recipe will positively impact every aspect of your health.

Work-out

Walk, jog, swim, or cycle 3-5 days a week for 35 minutes. Consider some interesting facts to get you motivated, if you are tempted toward being a couch potato: the results of studies looking at the effects of exercise on the skin led by Mark Tarnopolsky, a professor of pediatrics and exercise science at McMaster University. He studied the sun-protected buttock skin thickness of 29 local male and female volunteers ages 20 to 84, and confirmed the older adults had a thinner collagen layer and a rough, dry outer layer. That was expected. But when he subdivided their samples by exercise habits, he found that after age 40, the men and women who exercised frequently, performing at least three hours of moderate or vigorous physical activity every week, had a healthier outer skin layer and thicker collagen. Their skin was much closer in composition to that of the 20- and 30-year-olds than to that of others of their age, even if they were past age 65! The same scientists studied another group of sedentary adults age 65 or older that at the study’s start, had normal sunprotected buttock skin for their age. They prescribed half of the group a three month exercise program: twice a week jogging or cycling at a moderately strenuous pace for 30 minutes. After the three months, the buttock skin of those in the exercise group was tested and found to have significantly improved, resembling the skin of the 20- to 40-year-olds.

Avoid high glycemic foods

Refined sugars and high-fructose corn syrup are the worst. A diet high in sugar and high glycemic food calories causes glycation,

a process where excess sugar molecules attach themselves to collagen fibers, which accelerates the reactions involved in the aging process. The British Journal of Dermatology reported that after the age of 35, glycation in the skin increases and continues to do so as we get older. Worse—when we’re exposed to UV rays, it accelerates glycation, further aging the skin. In addition the spike in insulin that occurs after eating these high glycemic foods causes inflammation which can stimulate acne and promote the breakdown of collagen and elastin—so old or young, we need to avoid it. Atkinson, Kaye Foster-Powell, and Jennie C. Brand-Miller in the December 2008 issue of Diabetes Care, Vol. 31, number 12, pages 2281-2283.

Protect your skin

The most effective way to protect your skin while you are outdoors is to wear UPF 50+ clothing and a wide brimmed- hat. Use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen chosen for your activity with an SPF of 30 + is recommended. Wear a daily sun protectant applied to your face and neck because the incidental sun exposure adds up quickly. Sunscreens containing the physical blockers zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are best for daily use to avoid the overuse of chemicals on our skin. Add another protective layer and take the antioxidant called Heliocare (golden fern) 1-3 capsules daily. This antioxidant works at the cellular level to minimize the damaging effect of ultraviolet light on the skin and reduces inflammation caused by the sun that contributes to aging.

Correct your skin

hen asked how he’s doing, Jim Fannin always replies the same. “I’m awesome,” he says. Why? Because according to Fannin, he hasn’t had a negative day since Nov. 8, 1965.

On that day, his best friend—and Naomi Judd’s brother— died, leaving Fannin to feel his presence with the unspoken words: “Never have a bad day again.” In Brian Judd’s honor, Jim Fannin hasn’t had a bad day for more than 52 straight years (and counting).

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN LIFE COACHING? In the early 1970s, I was guiding the overall careers of eight of the world’s top 50 professional tennis players. I traveled with them full-time on the WTA (women’s) and ATP (men’s)

Tours. Lastly, in 1977, I created and franchised a children’s tennis program based on proprietary research, and we enrolled over 250,000 children worldwide. The original Indian Head Racquet Club in Countryside was one of those franchises. (I purchased it in 1983, and changed the name to S.C.O.R.E. Tennis Center.) These franchises spawned hundreds of parent seminars entitled “Coach Your Child to Greatness.” Many parents wanted me to coach their companies and themselves with my newfound tools and techniques. Swiftly, I had become the architect for crafting life blueprints for all my clients. In addition, I was providing simple tools and techniques for manifesting each blueprint. “Lifecoaching” did not formally exist at that time, and I was literally at the forefront of its existence.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR S.C.O.R.E. SUCCESS SYSTEM? The S.C.O.R.E. Success System is a simple thought management system that utilizes self-awareness and synchronized visualization for manifesting one’s visions and goals into reality. It was born from my independent and private 18-month research with three Ohio State [University] Ph.D. professors and 250 children ages 4 through 8, entitled “Maximizing Super Learning in Children.” It was here I discovered five intangible markers all humans possess; they are self-discipline, concentration, optimism, relaxation and enjoyment. It is the combination of these markers that trigger natural body chemicals (dopamine, serotonin, cortisol, adrenaline, etc.) that simultaneously attract the overarching mind-body fusion that athletes call “the Zone.” These markers (S.C.O.R.E.) spawned the S.C.O.R.E. Success System for becoming your genuine, authentic, best self in all you do. The overall S.C.O.R.E. Success System takes less than three percent of your waking hours to implement. It contains hundreds of customized, concrete, proven tools and techniques that take less than 90 seconds to implement (“90-Second Rule”). These 90-Second Rule tools and techniques have been utilized since 1974 for maximizing results for wellness, parenting, “significant other” relationships, academics, sales, management, leadership, ten professional sports and every amateur sport.

Stress can be and is contagious. All parents need to manage their own stress, and avoid it spilling over into their children’s daily lives. Any and all parent disagreements—and especially arguments—need to be held in private. Social media also plays a significant negative role in manifesting stress, especially in teenagers, [with whom] the peer group is most dominant and influential. Parents need to be parents, coaches, mentors and guides, and not just their child’s best friend. Your children are only as good as what they think when you (the parent) are not there. Turning your children into world-class decision makers will help them make personal decisions when you’re not there. Lastly, stress can be magnified when there is little to no family structure. Family routines (no cell phones at dinner) are crucial for busting stress, as long as the interactions are positive and consistent.

ommunity volunteers are preparing to host the sixth annual Band Together fundraiser, supporting the Willowbrook Corner program, at The Community House (TCH) in Hinsdale this February.

The program is celebrating its 25th year through TCH, and Band Together functions as the only event that specifically benefits the initiative. “This is the money that they use for summer,” co-chair Alyssa Guido said. “What they’re able to do—how many trips they’re able to take in the summer, the things they’re able to do with the kids—this money funds that.” Local youth band The Millennials will open the evening, while the band Infinity will return as the headlining act this year. Guido said the band’s guests paid admission last year, and expressed that they were quite pleased with the accommodations. “When your band is blown away with what they’re getting for the price of your event, you know that it’s a good event,” she said. In addition to musical entertainment on the stage of

Kettering Hall, there will be a full bar that Guido said will feature some “surprises,” as well as a raffle. Guido and fellow co-chair Trayce Biancalana said they are targeting roughly 250 attendees for the evening. “We’re trying to make it an all-ages, very casual event,” Biancalana said. “This is an affordable, casual, fun night [for] all ages to come out and support a great cause.” In terms of fundraising, Guido said they would like to exceed $30,000. “It’s an easy, fun event that raises money that directly benefits children living ten miles from us,” she said. “They are living in our backyard, and we always say, the Willowbrook Corner program is a lifeline for these families.”

WILLOWBROOK CORNER The Community House’s Willowbrook Corner program traces its roots to the early 1990s, and was founded in response to a shooting in the unincorporated Willowbrook neighborhood of the same name. “There was a shooting in the neighborhood, and we started providing some counseling resources out there on an ad hoc basis,” Biancalana said, “and it grew eventually into what is the actual program today.”

TCH has established a partnership with Anne M. Jeans Elementary School locally, and the primary component of its services is a thoroughgoing after-school program that runs every day. Local volunteers and school faculty members are present to assist with daily homework, and Guido said the initiative also provides “access to opportunities and experiences.” “Every single day after school, a program meets at Anne M. Jeans, and it not only provides educational assistance... but then there’s always enrichment as well,” Guido said. “So there’s opportunities for sports; there’s opportunities for arts; there is financial literacy.” Rebecca Perkhaus serves as the program director at Willowbrook Corner, and is assisted by a number of highschool students that formerly benefited from the initiative themselves. In addition to local adult volunteers, members of TCH’s junior board also lend their service to the program. Guido, who volunteers at Willowbrook Corner on Mondays, said the kids, many of whom originally hail from the streets of Chicago or a foreign country, commonly remark at the safety the program affords them. “Not only are the parents who have their children in this

program able to stay at their jobs longer, or take care of their personal needs that maybe they don’t have time to do when they have their children at home, [but] the kids have a place to go—and a lot of them will say that when you talk to them,” she said. ... “When you ask what they like about the program, one of the things they always say is, ‘We feel so safe here.’” Biancalana said the counseling services TCH provides at Willowbrook Corner are “100-percent free to the community.” From a volunteer perspective, Guido said the program is very enriching for both parties involved. “It takes all of five seconds to feel like they’re happy that you’re there,” she said. “You walk in, and they are so happy to see anybody who wants to talk with them, be interested in their day. ... It’s a very rewarding volunteer experience.” n The sixth annual Band Together will be held at The Community House in Hinsdale on Feb. 10. Margaret Cox of Oak Brook recently began working with Burn Boot Camp, a North Carolina-based fitness franchise that primarily tailors to women.

fter a medical scare in 2016, Oak Brook resident and mother of three young children Margaret Cox decided to take charge of her health. “I was always considering opening a franchise, but nothing interested me,” Cox said. “While I was recovering from a major operation last year, I discovered Burn Boot Camp.” Burn Boot Camp, headquartered in Huntsville, N.C., is a primarily women’s gym that is dedicated to transforming, empowering and maximizing quality of life for women. Burn Boot Camp has five philosophical pillars that attracted Cox: mindset; organic, whole food nutrition; burst training; strength training; and environment. Burn focuses on the physical, mental and emotional well-being of women—something Cox said she serendipitously needed while recovering from her surgery. “Their mission statement really stuck with me,” she said. “The goal of Burn is basically to educate, influence and inspire women.” At one time, Cox belonged to Women’s Workout World—a franchise of exercise gyms that catered to women through nutritional counseling, classes and personal training. Burn Boot Camp welcomes all fitness levels, and works with clients through personalized training in a group atmosphere. “We don’t use machines at Burn, because our bodies are our machines,” Cox said. “We have focus meetings where the personal trainer sits with clients one-on-one as many times as the client needs.” The classes are 45 minutes of high-intensity interval training, and the formats change weekly, so clients are never doing the same workout twice. Burn Boot Camp trainers are among the top five percent of personal trainers in the country, having to pass a very specific strength and 44

conditioning test to be considered for a position. “It’s a way of life for them,” Cox said. “More importantly, they want to help people; they want to see clients physically transform, and help them for the long-term in life.” Classes begin with calisthenics, then work at four to five different stations consisting of kettle balls, medicine balls, BOSU balls, cords, ropes, hurdles and more to work various body parts. Cox also stresses that women need to take care of their emotional well-being. “Moms tend to take care of themselves last in the family,” she said. “When women don’t eat right or exercise, it can lead to depression or negative self-esteem.” To that end, Burn Boot Camp provides free childcare. “Free childcare is a great component of Burn,” Cox said. “We want to make it as easy as possible for moms to come in and take care of themselves, knowing their kids are being taken care of too.” Clients at Burn are encouraged to only speak positively while within the “boot camp” space. No vulgar language or negative comments are allowed. Clients are also encouraged to high-five or verbally compliment one another when working out. “When you work out together, you bond with one another,” Cox said. Although Burn Boot Camp caters primarily to women, in the afternoons and on weekends, men are welcome too. For Cox, the most exciting thing is watching people take charge of their health, and seeing positive results. “I’m looking forward to creating a community where people feel comfortable working out,” she said. “Most importantly, I’m excited to help people.” n

More than $200,000 was raised for programs at The Community House through the ball, setting a record for the event. Guests began the evening with a festive cocktail hour in Kettering Hall, as they viewed and placed bids on more than 200 bottles of wine from exclusive vintages around the world. “D Major and The Minors” from the Hinsdale Central jazz band set the tone for the relaxed atmosphere, while Kristina Taheri, owner of Hinsdale-based Kristina Taheri Special Events, transformed the facility from a basketball court to a setting befitting a black-tie venue. Another highlight of the evening was a live auction of three vacation properties, conducted by Eric Ferguson of WTMX-FM 101.9, also a Hinsdale resident.

CHRISTMAS WALK Photography by Marco Nunez Area residents packed into downtown Hinsdale for the 52nd annual Christmas Walk on Dec. 1. Festivities included a lighting of the Christmas tree at village hall, and Santa Claus arriving on a fire truck for the lighting of the tree. Children visited with Santa in Burlington Park, to see Angel and Dancer, a pair of live reindeer. Other festivities included the customary kiddietrain, Cookieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s carousel, strolling carolers and animated characters. AMITA Health partnered with Steinway & Sons for kids to visit the Holiday Teddy Bear Clinic, where hospital staff fixed up a new stuffed animal friend, along with Christmas music played on the Steinway pianos, while hot apple cider served was served.

Two hundred underprivileged children hailing from 81 families secured Christmas gifts courtesy of the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) at the annual Gift of Season at Grace Episcopal Church on Dec. 9.

The club adopted a new approach to the outreach initiative this year, moving away from having family representatives browse the room for gifts, and opting instead for “adopta-child,” whereby HJWC members signed up to purchase items on a child’s submitted “wish list.” The families were selected through Hinsdalebased HCS Family Services, which operates food pantries in the basement of the Hinsdale Memorial Building in downtown Hinsdale and in the basement of Anne M. Jeans Elementary School in unincorporated Willowbrook. The HJWC is currently in the second of a two-year partnership with HCS as its primary beneficiary, but has worked with the non-profit organization for its Gift of the Season initiative for more than 20 years. Gifts were purchased for children ranging in age from birth to 18. Once obtained, they were stored in paper bags amidst a more efficiently arranged room at Grace.

estled in the middle of Timothy Christian School’s 22-acre campus is a brand-new, state-of-the-art middle school, housing a 1,600-seat fieldhouse complete with box seats, a catwalk and private locker rooms for visiting teams. The private Christian school, located off of Butterfield Road in Elmhurst, is home to 1,200 preschool through 12th grade students, 38 of whom live in Hinsdale. With its own fleet of buses, students come from more than 55 different communities. On Dec. 1, the Timothy Christian community celebrated the grand opening of the Ward Athletic Center—or the WAC, as the students have affectionately nicknamed the fieldhouse— with a basketball home opener against rival Chicago Christian. The hype around opening night was so electric, the school sold out of tickets in less than a week. As 6-foot, 7-inch senior captain Brandon Orange led the Trojans out of the locker room, the packed fieldhouse erupted. The magic and energy of the WAC was palpable and deafening. “It was insane,” Orange said. “We have never played in front of 1,200 people before. I felt very proud to be on the court. I don’t think many high-school students get this experience.” Opening night also included guests Jim Cornelison, best known for singing the national anthem at Chicago Blackhawks games, and the Jesse White Tumblers. “I got goosebumps during the national anthem,” Orange said. “I’d heard him sing at a Blackhawks game, but it was

amazing to hear him sing at Timothy. I felt honored to have him at our school.” The Trojans prevailed in decisive fashion, 56-24, over the Knights to begin the evening, led by junior Jordyn Strube with 12 points. The varsity boys’ game, though, couldn’t have been choreographed better for an opening night contest. Like any good story, the Trojans and Knights delivered an intense, on the edge-of-your-seat, nail-biter of a game. While Timothy never trailed behind Chicago Christian, the game was often unsettlingly close. With just 1:11 left in the game, the score was 58-57, and a minute later, senior Ty Merrick drew a foul, and headed to the free-throw line. “When he made both of his free throws, the crowd went wild,” Orange said. “I knew we were going to seal the win—it was surreal.” Orange has several colleges to pursuing him to play basketball next year, but he said he’s focused on being a Trojan for the moment. “We need to stay humble and respect the other teams, but I would like to win [IHSA] regionals,” Brandon said. “Sectionals are back at the WAC, and I’d like to represent Timothy.— There is absolutely no place like the WAC.” n
