Hinsdale Magazine sat down with longtime Hinsdale residents Rob and Lisa Stafford to talk about Rob’s journey to remission from a rare blood disease, amyloidosis. Rob is glad to be back at home and behind the news anchor desk, and he gives an exclusive interview to HM on his fight to get back to his life after being diagnosed in 2016. He is thankful to his wife Lisa, who urged him to see his doctor, which resulted in an early diagnosis. Rob’s mission is to tell his story and urge others to see their doctor when suspecting something is not right with their health.
was held on March 13. The program continues its tradition of reducing hunger, while promoting self-sufficiency. Its services span 3,700 low-income individuals living in Southeast DuPage County, including in Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Burr Ridge, Westmont, Willowbrook and Oak Brook. The nonprofit organization is seeking volunteers for its food pantries in Hinsdale and Willowbrook to assist its office with registration of clients for the pantry and in answering phones. Volunteers are especially needed during open pantry distribution on Mondays, Wednesday mornings and late afternoons on Friday. To get involved, call HCS executive director Stan Cook at 630-323-2500 ext. 102.

Did you know that Hinsdale Falcon Football program over the past decade has been instrumental to the strength of Hinsdale Central football? The youth football program, along with other sports, have come under pressure from research on and news media coverage of concussions and safety. The Falcons organization has taken steps to address those concerns in order to keep the program moving forward, and you will read on p. 58 how special helmets, technology and new rules address those concerns. Contributing editor Mike Ellis spoke with Falcons president Jay Novatney and other volunteers who make this football feeder program a smooth transition into high-school football.

STAFFORD STRONG Now in remission, WMAQ Ch.5 anchor Rob Stafford focuses on awareness and early detection By Scott Jonlich | Photography by Marco Nunez
Rob Stafford is back where he is most comfortable after facing mortality last year—behind the WMAQ Ch. 5 news anchor desk—after being diagnosed in 2016 with amyloidosis, a rare blood disease. Today, his message is early detection, and his mission is to tell his story so that others can learn from his experience. “I am in complete remission,” Stafford told Hinsdale Magazine. “I am very lucky. I just had my bloodwork done, and there is no sign of the disease in my body right now. My kidneys are permanently damaged, but I have 57-percent kidney function, which is fine—you don’t nearly need 57 percent.’’ Stafford and his wife Lisa recently moved from their suburban Hinsdale home of 25 years to their new condominium in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. He said he enjoys his short commute to the newsroom across town, and is looking ahead to continuing his recovery. “I was just told that if I went to a regular doctor today, and they did not have any history on me, they probably would not know that I was sick,”
Stafford said. He learned that one does not need full use of his or her kidneys to live a fulfilling life, and that this consequence is only a remnant of his fight with amyloidosis. Stafford had an unsuccessful transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., before coming back to Rush University Medical Center in Chicago July 2017 to continue his treatment. “A few thousand people get this each year,” he said. “Amyloidosis is a rare disease and not curable. The chemotherapy cocktail worked after my transplant failed—and they put me on a chemo cocktail that was an injection once a week, Velcade and dexamethasone (steroid), along with Revlimid.” “The turning point was a meeting with the doctors at Mayo Clinic after the stem-cell transplant failed, and we decided to do the chemotherapy cocktail at Rush University Medical Center, just a mile from our condo, with hematologist Parameswaran Venugopal,’’ he said. After his sixweek check-up, the disease was knocked down 65

Continued from the previous page percent from when Stafford started, and five months later, he was in complete remission. He is now on a lower dose pill of Revlimid (chemo), two weeks on and two weeks off. “As much of a failure [as] the transplant was, the chemo cocktail gave me everything that I hoped with the transplant,’’ he said. Stafford’s future is clearer today, and his mission is to bring awareness to a disease and its symptoms. He fears that those afflicted may ignore and postpone seeing their doctor. “My story is a story of early detection,” he said. “There
look like we were going to beat it.’’ The Stafford’s are actively involved with the Amyloidosis Support Group in Chicago and counseling Amyloidosis patients as they journey on the road to remission. “We have had so many wonderful folks from Hinsdale who have planted gardens, cleaned our homes, helped us move and delivered meals and gifts,” said Lisa Stafford. “In addition, we have had Amyloidosis patients who reached out to help us along the way. Now it’s our turn to give back.’’
“Now I am more focused on enjoying life. For now, we have beaten it, and six months ago, it did not look like we were going to beat it.” –ROB STAFFORD were very few symptoms, but I had urine tests and blood tests, and there were high levels of protein in my urine; and if we hadn’t had those tests, they would not have caught it early, and I might not be in remission right now.’’ Stafford credits his wife Lisa for recognizing his health change, and pushing him to see his doctor. “My wife was convinced something was wrong, because I could not keep up on a bike ride or on a hike; and I always had a reason to explain why I could not do things I used to be able to do as a 58-year old guy—now a 59-year old guy—, and I just chalked it up to middle-age,” he said. “She was right, and the key to early detection is going to a doctor each year so you have a baseline, and you can compare any changes in your blood-work and urine over a period of time. If there’s a change, then your doctor has a sense that something is not right. In my case, that’s what led to this diagnosis.’’ Lisa Stafford recalled when her husband first showed symptoms from the disease. “I noticed Rob’s decreased energy and [that he] did not want to do active things—and that was not Rob,” she said. “I encouraged him to ride the bike, and he would be out of breath. His skin color changed, and there were other symptoms that were just not normal. His urologist pointed out that his levels were off, and we had it checked out.” Looking back on the past year, Stafford can now focus on the life ahead. “The gift I got was that you suddenly are dealing with your mortality at an age you didn’t think you had to deal with it,” he said. “You look at the possibility that your life is going to be a lot shorter; then, I got into remission after having the possibility of death. Now I am more focused on enjoying life. For now, we have beaten it, and six months ago, it did not

Back to the Newsroom
HM: What is the future of journalism? ROB STAFFORD: “Figure out how to get the young people who are not watching the 1 p.m. news in 20 years. They are streaming things. We will always need to deliver content, and [reaching those people] will be the challenge for us. The phone is the most important part of their lives. We had the contacts with huge Rolodexes, which the kids may [not even] know what those are nowadays.” HM: What is the most important thing journalists should know? STAFFORD: You have to get it right. It’s important to get it out first, but you have to get it right. We don’t do ‘fake news;’ we do real news in Chicago. You need people who have been in the city long enough. [News] does not just come from a news conference on a podium; you have to go out and find it. You have to have contact, knock on doors, and you have to interview. There is no way around that. HM: What advice can you give to journalism students? STAFFORD: Work hard; be kind to everyone you encounter, [both] in the newsroom and the people you interview. You have to work hard and love news to do it. It’s the same simple advice I had for years. n

Q&A ASK THE EXPERT
There is a reason why you hear advisors stress diversifying your portfolio strategically depending on your situation, and I am not only referring to asset allocation, that is to say, dividing an investment portfolio among different asset categories, i.e. stocks, bonds, and cash. I am talking about asset location. Asset location is a very important and strategic way to minimize your tax liability and it takes advantage of the fact that different types of investments get different tax treatments. Simply put, advisors determine which securities should be held in tax-deferred accounts, and which securities should be held in taxable accounts to maximize after-tax returns using the tax code to your benefit. When it comes to the distribution of retirement assets, and where those assets are located in the portfolio can have a direct bearing on how much income you receive. There are many facets and fine-tuning for each situation when it comes to determining an overall asset location strategy, but there is a core philosophy for this strategy – holding assets that throw off income taxed as ordinary income in a tax-deferred account, such as a retirement account, and holding assets that primarily produce capital gains in taxable accounts. Let’s take a look at the different types of accounts that are used in this strategy and why it is so important to know how different assets are taxed. TAXABLE ACCOUNTS This category includes investments in stocks, investments in bonds, IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, SEPS, etc. The question here is when you are going to actually pay the tax due. As we are all aware of, the government has a potential share in any investment gains (and losses). Simply put, if an investment that you own loses value, the tax on the investment decreases, ultimately decreasing the amount the government will be paid and vice versa. In another situation, if an investment is in bonds or another asset that is taxed at ordinary income rates, the government would receive more in taxes than an investment that produces capital gains, as ordinary income is taxed higher than capital gains. Retirement accounts (IRAs, 401(k)s, etc.) have a different way of taxation, as the government collects taxes during the distribution phase at your ordinary income rate whether funds are taken from principal or gains. The “odd-ball” here is the Roth account. The government does

not have any future revenue from this account since the account is funded on an after-tax basis. Though this account has arguably the strictest contribution limitations, it is an option that many take advantage of. MANAGING THE TRADE-OFF It is not always easy to locate assets in the most effective manner and adhere to the most appropriate asset allocation. In this case, analyzing the specific assets that need to be allocated within a portfolio and figuring out alternatives is the best option. For example, actively traded stocks should be in retirement accounts so that they won’t be taxed at high short-term capital gains rates. Alternatively, if stocks will be bought and held for a long period of time, they can be placed in a taxable account and unrealized gains won’t be taxed at all, and realized gains will be taxed at lower capital gains rates. Most bonds and bond funds as well as REITs all belong in taxdeferred retirement accounts, because they are taxable at ordinary income tax rates. ROTH VS. TRADITIONAL ACCOUNTS Generally, it is to your advantage to contribute to a traditional retirement plan over a Roth if you expect to be in a lower tax bracket during retirement. But since there’s no way to know what tax rates will do in the future, it’s a guessing game. Something to consider if contributing to a Roth makes sense in your situation include the fact that distributions aren’t required from Roth accounts, which can make them great estate-planning vehicles, and the fact that they don’t generate taxable income in retirement. If you have a variety of assets to choose from when taking distributions, including traditional retirement accounts, Roth accounts, and taxable accounts, it is easier to mix and match distributions from these accounts to come up with the best strategy for your unique situation. Although it is important to have a general awareness of tax issues when contemplating retirement, there is no substitute for consulting your tax advisor for advice. Retirement is one of the most important events in life to plan for, however it does not need to be as intimidating as it seems.

Q&A
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR
A Hair Loss Treatment?
ASK THE EXPERT
PRP
(Platelet Rich Plasma) What is PRP Scalp Therapy? PRP therapy for hair loss is a treatment that involves withdrawing a patient’s own blood, processing it so that only the enriched cells (platelet-rich plasma) remain, and injecting it into the scalp. PRP contains essential proteins that stimulate the hair’s natural growth. PRP can also be combined with hair transplant surgery, microneedling, or medications such as Propecia and Minoxidil. What causes hair loss? In men, hair loss follows a very specific, progressive pattern that is inherited and is triggered by hormone–specifically dihydrotestosterone or DHT. As hair follicles shrink and weaken, coverage of the scalp is reduced, leaving thinning or balding areas. In women, hair loss is mainly due to heredity, but can also be strongly influenced by age, nutrition, stress and illness. What can I expect during my treatment? A small amount of blood will be drawn and placed in a centrifuge, separating specific cells in the blood called platelets. Theses palettes suspended in your plasma are highly concentrated with specialized growth factors. We then inject the platelets with a tiny needle into the scalp. A series of three to five treatments are recommended for best results. A personal consultation will allow for a unique approach to your hair loss treatment.

ou know the way we eat must be changing when a restaurant owned by “Da Coach” is offering glutenfree options, protein bowls, cage-free eggs and locally-sourced ingredients. Grill 89, the newest concept from the Ditka’s Restaurant Group, which opened in Westmont two years ago, is continuing to address that very issue, said Paul Woodard, vice president of operations. “Grill 89 was our attempt to pivot a bit to see how people are really eating these days,” Woodard said. “We believe they’re looking for a more casual dining experience, but with that same quality and freshness of food.” The concept was simple: a classic American sports bar, albeit with a chill atmosphere and rustic interior, and a Millennial-friendly menu focusing on three distinct methods of cooking—a wood-fired grill, a smoker and a rotisserie. The result is updated old-school—a sports bar where vegans and carnivores, salad eaters and slider aficionados, can agree to disagree. But whether you order the 18-hour certified Angus beef brisket or the Sonoma Coast chicken salad— with green goddess dressing, field greens, pecans, dates avocado and wood-grilled chicken—, everything is prepared to order, Woodard says. “All of our kitchens are scratch kitchens, which means everything from the salad dressings to the corned beef are made in-house,” he says. “The corned beef is sliced to order, just as you’d get at a deli.” With a menu that heavily features fresh fish (fish tacos, woodgrilled salmon, shrimp, Great Lakes whitefish) this spring, Grill 89 is rolling out a classic New England lobster roll that features real butterpoached lobster. “A lot of restaurants cut corners on the lobster, but we certainly don’t Continued on the next page

do that,” Woodard says. “We’re really dedicated to using the best, highestquality ingredients.” That edict extends to the restaurant’s drink menu, which features a barrelaged old-fashioned made with Last Feather Rye Whiskey from Journeymen Distillery in Three Oaks, Mich. If whiskey’s not your thing, perhaps a blue Hawaiian, a strawberry gin fizz or a glass of homemade sangria will suit you? Also, this spring, the restaurant will unveil a summer wine list featuring a variety of California wines, as well as an extensive offering of roses, with three or more options each day, including a sparkling rose. Grill 89’s outdoor space, which currently contains ten tables, is a big draw in the summer, Woodard said. “Whether you’re with a family, on a date, on a business lunch, whatever, we’re all about come-as-you-are here,” he said. “[It’s] just good food in a casual atmosphere.”

SHOP FOR A CAUSE Photography by Daniel Garcia Several hundred ladies from the western suburbs browsed a variety of local vendors at the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club’s (HJWC) second annual “shop for a cause” fundraiser at The Community House on April 10. Vendors ranged from local establishments such as Drapery Connection, Club Pilates Westmont and Hinsdale Dance Academy, to at-home business representatives.

Many of the vendors at this year’s shop for a cause were new to the sophomore event, which was laid out in a similar manner throughout the fieldhouse at The Community House. The HJWC previously hosted a similar event roughly a decade ago, and then revitalized the concept at the suggestion of 2016-17 club president Megan Hickman. All of the proceeds generated through vendor fees and raffle ticket sales were directed towards the club’s foundation. For more information about the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club, visit www.hjwc.us.

HCS Family Services expands its services through new, larger pantry at Anne M. Jeans Elementary School By Mike Ellis | Photography by Daniel Garcia
H
CS Family Services has unveiled an updated, more spacious food pantry at Anne M. Jeans Elementary School in unincorporated Willowbrook. The pantry, which according to District 180 superintendent Tom Schneider is one of three school-based pantries currently operating in the State of Illinois, serves underprivileged individuals within the school district, as well as those in surrounding DuPage County communities. Opened in 2016, the HCS food pantry at Anne M. Jeans Elementary is situated in the organization’s neediest area, the Willowbrook Corner neighborhood. The pantry was originally located in the basement, but this updated version is on the
54
main level of the school, and is significantly larger, thus affording HCS the space to stack its shelves with more goods to serve its clients. HCS held a grand opening for its community partners and supporters at the school on March 13. “We want to thank you, in person, for all of the contributions that you made to us, and we also are happy for you to see the results of your work; we want you to see the actual food pantry,” HCS executive director Stan Cook said. Cook, who has been in his current position for roughly eight months, and served on the organization’s board for about a year prior, said in his time at HCS, he has “learned a lot about local hunger.”
Hinsdale60521.com | HINSDALE MAGAZINE, INC.
“I’ve learned that hunger is, in fact, an acute issue in our community, but it’s also a very hidden issue here,” he said. “I’ve learned that in DuPage County, we have the second-largest food-insecure population in the State of Illinois, behind only Cook County; I’ve learned that one in six children in northern Illinois face hunger; and I’ve learned that here, in [the] Willowbrook Corner [neighborhood], there’s an area of particular need.” Citing 30 years of previous experience in the private sector, Cook said the partnership HCS has formed with District 180, which encompasses Anne M. Jeans and Burr Ridge Middle School, is “one of the best that I’ve worked with,” and that the location is ideal, given the need that exists in Willowbrook

Corner. “It’s an area of need, because there’s a lot of economic need here,” he said. “There’s also low supply and low access to healthy foods. If you live in this area, and you don’t have transportation, you may walk to Walgreens or walk to McDonalds to get your food. If you have a car, you may decide you’re going to go a couple of miles away and go to Target, or four miles away and go to Whole Foods; but honestly, some of the prices at those places are going to be too high for you.” Cook said the objective is that HCS clients “come for the food,” but that they “leave [the pantry] with hope.” District 180 superintendent Tom Schneider said instilling hope in children
is a component of education, “but it’s hard to achieve that, and get that learning, that knowledge, if you’re worried about where your next meal is coming from.” “Having the food pantry here helps bring ease to many of our families and many of our students,” Schneider said. Schneider developed the image of Anne M. Jeans as a “lighted schoolhouse” for district families in the evening. “The food pantry has become our anchor store,” he said. “Everybody wants to be associated with the food pantry that’s in a school.” Shazia Sultan, president of the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC), spoke briefly at the grand opening concerning her organization’s extended relationship with HCS through its annual “Gift of Season” fundraiser, as well as its ongoing twoyear partnership with HCS as its primary beneficiary. “We raised a record amount of money last year in the [70] years that we’ve been in existence, and we just finished our own fundraising this year; and we are so, so excited to have had the opportunity to see all of this come your way,” Sultan said. According to Sultan, to fulfill club service obligations, HJWC members volunteer regularly at the pantry. Moreover, she said her children have derived valuable experience from volunteering themselves as well. A representative from the Northern Illinois Food Bank enumerated a series of advantages school-based food pantries possess over other varieties of pantries, which included:
• A safe location local families trust; • Reduces stigma of seeking assistance from a food pantry; and • Schools provide a “geographically closer” location for families residing within a school district, thus reducing the need for public transportation. “By food pantries coming into schools, it opens so many opportunities to our families and to the community that you guys are serving here,” she said. Josephine Infante, an HCS client who works at Quest Diagnostics, shared her gratitude for the food pantry with guests at the grand opening. Infante, a 36-year-old mother of two, said she wanted to “express how grateful I am for this Hinsdale food pantry, and this beautiful building that you have built for this specific project.” “My [first] check goes to rent,” she said. “I don’t get any assistance, because working for Quest is ‘in the middle—you’re not poor; you’re not rich.’ ... The second check goes to utilities, daily living, gas. So the pantry really does help.” Infante said the pantry is a source of relief and reassurance for her each month. “I’m humbled, and this gives me stability for my children and I,” she said. ... “If I did not have this opportunity to shop at the pantry, I would have a lot more gray hairs.” n For more information about HCS Family Services and its food pantries in Hinsdale and in unincorporated Willowbrook at Anne M. Jeans Elementary School, visit www.hcsfamilyservices.org.

risk, blustery Friday nights under the lights at Dickinson Field on the Hinsdale Central campus are synonymous with fall in the Hinsdale community. The red and white hues that adorn the stands convey the spirit that students, parents and local residents feel for their school and football team. But it is both easy and natural to

overlook the fact that these timeless scenes would not exist without football, and the games would not be nearly so compelling and interesting to fans, in the absence of a well-developed football program. Over the past decade and a half at least, it has been all but taken for granted that Hinsdale Central will field a competitive football team. This fact has been demonstrated through the

team’s numerous IHSA state playoff appearances, including a pair of semifinal finishes in 2004 and 2005, followed by a trip to the state championship game in 2008. Much of this success is rooted in the community’s youth football program, the Hinsdale Falcons. From time immemorial, Falcon football has existed as a developmental youth program for local third- to eighth-graders, essentially
functioning as the feeder program for Hinsdale Central. “You go back the last couple years, the vast majority of the starting Hinsdale Central Red Devils offensive and defensive players and special-teamers all came through the program,” Falcon football president Jay Novatney said. ... “We take a lot of pride in building the fundamentals up in these kids. They’re football-ready when they get to high school.” The Falcons compete in the Bill George Youth Football League (BGYFL) with 18 other local franchises, including Lyons Township and Glen Ellyn, the feeder program for the Glenbard West high-school program that has enjoyed tremendous success over the past decade. This year, Plainfield and St. CharlesBatavia-Geneva will also join the league. Teams play nine regular season games, and if their records merit it, compete in eight-team playoffs. Novatney said kids often play more games in Falcons, due to the playoff schedule, than as freshmen or sophomores in high school, which also schedule nine-game regular seasons, but have no postseasons. “If the Falcons program didn’t exist, it would be very difficult for the high school to maintain the scope of their football program from freshman to varsity, and also to maintain the excellence that they’ve had,” he said. While Central football has continued to experience productive seasons the past few years, Novatney said enrollment in the Falcons program has begun to decline during his six years as president. “We’ve certainly seen an enrollment decrease over that period of time,” he said. ... “When I started, we had over 300 kids in the program...and we kept it [at] that level or close to that level for the first couple of years.” According to Novatney, the year after the current high-school sophomore class For the first time , Falcons players will wear an extra layer of protection over their helmets in the form of “guardian caps.”

He said the decline “doesn’t seemed to be age-based,” and imputed it to a “confluence of factors,” including families cycling through the program and safety concerns. “What I’ve seen over the years is, if a kid starts with us in third grade, the chances are pretty high that that kid’s going to stay with us through his eighthgrade year,” Novatney said. “Kids like playing football; they play it at recess; they play it with their buddies at the house; they play a turkey bowl in the wintertime.” Concussions and their impact on future health and wellness have become a paramount concern in many sports, but in none more so than football. At the collegiate and professional levels, players are penalized for making helmetto-helmet tackles, and in college, safeties that lead with the helmet are often ejected from games for “targeting.” Novatney said in light of widespread, well-documented concerns, these changes have trickled down to the youth level as well. “For us, nobody’s put their head in the sand—we know it’s an issue,” he said. ... “You can change some rules, but the sport is the sport. THE MAGIC OF MEDITATION Would you like to rid yourself of harmful stress? Would like to make better decisions? And would you like to improve your concentration? What if you could decrease your sensitivity to pain? What if you could bolster your immune system? What if you could live a life of calmness in our world of chaos and uncertainty? What if you could regularly perform in the “zone?” Research now shows that daily meditation can deliver these positive attributes and more. Never before in the history of mankind have we labored so much with future, present and past thoughts bombarding our mind 16 hours a day. More than 20 years ago, the average thought was between 12 and 14 seconds. Today, our attention span is on the decline; we are distracted at an alarming rate with the cell-phone and its myriad of applications that demand our attention. How many times a day do you look at your phone for a text, e-mail or call? Can you go an entire meal without looking? Have you become a prisoner of the digital, outside world? Our attention spans are in a downward spiral, and the negatives that follow are detrimental to your health and overall performance. Use the power of meditation to break from your stressful day in order to significantly increase your performances and overall well-being. Here are four proven 90-Second Rule meditations to get you started. As you progress, you can increase the time as you see fit. First, find a quiet place alone, and get in a comfortable posture. • Countdown Calm: This 90-Second Rule meditation can be used anywhere and everywhere. You can do this exercise with your eyes open or shut, and in a standing, seated or prone position. Focus all of your awareness on your breathing. With your inhalation, think of the number ten. As you exhale, repeat thinking of the number ten. With your next inhalation and exhalation, think of the number nine. Continue this countdown sequence until you reach zero, and you’ve completed ten inhalations and exhalations. During this simple exercise, you will have no thoughts about your future or past. Full engagement is your task; calmness is your quest. • Stress Scanner: Starting with your feet and working up to your face, place your awareness on your individual body parts. With awareness on your feet, notice if you feel tense or anxious.
Mentally relax this body part. See how much you can spread any sensations and feelings of relaxation to areas of your body that feel tense. Relax your feet, calves, thighs, buttocks, lower and upper abs, chest muscles, biceps, fists, shoulders, jaw and overall face. Once you reach your face, work back down your body to your feet. Scan for stress, and mentally melt it away. • Focus Afar: This next exercise is being used by all of the athletes I coach; however, it is for people of any age. Find a small, dime- sized object as your target for your visual attention. Narrow your focus so that you are only seeing your small objective. Unhinge your jaw, soften your eyes and relax all of your muscles. Breathe slowly as you inhale and exhale. Now balance on one foot, while you focus your attention on your target. Hold this focus for 90 seconds, while balancing on one foot. If you lose your balance, start over. You goal is to maintain balance and focus for ten repetitions of 90 seconds each, with 30-second breaks in between. • Mantra Magic: Choose a single-sentence or one-word mantra directed to something you want to accomplish. My baseball clients choose, “I hit solid,” as their mantra. A salesperson might use, “I close,” or, “I sell.” If you have a desired body-weight to accomplish, then repeat, “190” or “120” as you breathe and relax. A mantra literally means “that which protects the mind.” Therefore, your mantra will protect you from entering the future or the past as you focus on the moment. With your mantra ready, focus on a small object across the room or your breathing (your choice). For three 90-second applications, repeat your mantra, and stay in the moment for the duration. Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years. Finally, science has proven the benefits that many have long believed and enjoyed. Use the above 90-Second Rule exercises as often as possible. Build up your mental endurance as you progress. I recommend meditation daily. Many clients set their phone alarms to remind them to meditate. Now that’s a benefit that modern technology can provide! Do you want better health? Do you want freedom from worry, anxiety and stress? You’re only 90 seconds away from peace, tranquility and renewed energy. Give it a try. Make the magic of meditation a lifetime routine.
