Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Maleny Show-ground upgrades - Show-ready! This year’s Maleny Show on 28 and 29 May has a new showstopping look following the completion of a $1.4 million upgrade to infrastructure and facilities to cater for the crowds who are expected to ock to the Show once more.

producing an estimated 157,352 kWh – that’s equivalent to powering more than 320 medium-sized household fridges for a year! Patrons will also notice the reconstructed amenities building behind the Secretary’s Of ce, which includes unisex toilets and basins, a change room and cubicle, and an all abilities cubicle and shower. A pathway has also been installed from the amenities to the disability parking space and a further two concrete car parks have been provided.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said the renewed facilities meant the show-grounds could continue to cater for crowd-favourite events. “Usually the smells, sounds and sights of country life are the main attractions when you enter the gates, but I think our facility upgrades won’t go unnoticed this year,” Mayor Jamieson said.

The Federal Government provided $534,722 to the Maleny Show Society which also provided an additional $325,000 of their own funds for these projects. These contributions supported the upgrade to the amenities and

“Our Council has contributed nearly $400,000 to this upgrade in partnership, with contributions from both the Federal Government, Queensland Government and Maleny Show Society, which I think the community will warmly welcome. “To make it easier for vehicles to access the show-grounds, council has upgraded the gravel roads around the two main elds to asphalt and constructed an exit road from the grounds to ease congestion. “The Pavilion, which caters for many trade shows, has been tted out with solar panels

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said the Queensland Government invested $200,000 to this upgrade through the State’s COVID Works for Queensland program. “It’s projects like the Maleny Showground upgrade that improve local community infrastructure and create local jobs.” Division 5 Councillor and Maleny Show Society President Winston Johnston said it was really exciting to see the upgrades delivered in time for this year’s show. “We are expecting a crowd of more than 6000 to support our local traders and to revel in this year’s new attractions. “In our main ring, we will host not one but two nights of entertainment, with crowd favourite monster trucks and a nale of reworks “I would also like to acknowledge that Agricultural Shows such as Maleny’s would not be successful without the tireless work of local volunteers who

Maleny Golf Club gets energy ef cient mowing Maleny Golf Club, in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Hinterland, has just acquired an electric greens mower which will abate morning machinery noise for the bene t of the neighbourhood and reduce the club’s carbon footprint. Course Superintendent Mick McCombe said the new environmentally-friendly Toro mower did not carry hydraulic uids and used allelectric components for traction, steering, deck lifting and cutting. “This eliminates the risk of hydraulic uid being spilt on our environmentally sensitive golf course and will help reduce our carbon footprint as well,” Mick explained. “It is noticeably much quieter to operate, so we can mow the greens in the morning without the neighbours hearing us, and the small on-board petrol generator, which charges the batteries, is less costly to operate.” Advanced cutting technology also regulates the speed of the cutting units in relation to ground speed, giving an even clip rate across all putting surfaces. “This will substantially improve both the aesthetics and playability of our greens, making the mower a very welcome addition to our maintenance eet as it will enhance our ability to produce quality putting surfaces year round,” Mick said. The maintenance eet now includes an array of sophisticated, special-purpose machinery. However, when Mick joined the club in early 2014 as construction of the rst nine holes got underway, he had just two old lawn spreaders to work with!

Story of Maleny Show With everyone looking forward to getting back to the Maleny Show in 2021, we thought readers would enjoy a look back at where it all began. With thanks to Les Fawkes and the Hinterland Grapevine for this potted history. During Maleny's early settlement years, the community used to get together in Walker’s paddock and later Dunlop’s paddock (where the rear primary school oval next to the Obi Creek is today).

Using plans supplied by the Caboolture Show Society, an industrial pavilion measuring 75 ft by 35ft was built. This pavilion was near enough to completion to be used for the second show on April 23rd and 24th, 1924 (the picture here was taken about two years after the completion of the building).

years. Then along came Covid, that stopped the show in 2020. However this great rural tradition is part and parcel of the living history of the Maleny district and the hard working members and volunteers of the Show Society have pulled out all the stops in 2021 to ensure delivery of the best show yet!

Historically, the Show Society management committee ploughed the income earned on Show days back into the upkeep, The rst murmuring of a maintenance and improvement of permanent Show-grounds were the Maleny Show ground facilities, heard on October 13th 1919 for the bene t and enjoyment of when the Maleny branch of of the the whole community as a Queensland Farmer’s Union sporting and recreational hub for asked the Landsborough Shire The First Pavilion _ Built on the site the remainder of the year. years, ensuring that a great show is provided each year. Successful shows have ensured a signi cant bank balance has been built up for the Maleny Show Society, from which the Society can contribute funds towards big building and facility projects like those currently being delivered at the Showgrounds. David has been working alongside Ed, Project Manager of the recent works, for months and the ’new-look’ Showgrounds are looking fantastic thanks to them and their team of tradesmen and workers. Maleny Rangers FC U14 Girls Match Report. Saturday the Maleny girls travelled to Beerwah to play against “top of the table“ Beegees. This was always going to be a good contest, as when the 2 teams met in in the rst round, the result was a 2-2 draw. The game started with Beegees pushing hard and testing the Maleny defence. Play went back and forth with neither team able to make any scoring shots due to solid defence at either end of the eld. Midway through the half, Beegees broke through the Maleny defence and scored. Maleny rallied, and with excellent teamwork, scored an equaliser shortly after to level the score. Halftime saw the score locked at 1-1. The second half had Beegees putting pressure on Maleny straight away. After weathering the storm, the game once again settled into a back and forth affair until the Maleny girls once again broke the defence of the opposition and found the back of the net. Try as they might, Beegees were unable to score until an opportunity came their way via a penalty in the goal box. The pressure was now on Chelsea, the Maleny keeper, to keep the ball out. And keep it out she did! A great take, denying Beegees the equaliser saw Maleny come away with the win.

Spanning the careers of such eminent meteorologists as Clement Wragge, Inigo Jones, Lennox Walker and local weatherman Pat Stacey, Jack’s research produces a stark picture of Nature’s random power and mankind’s heroic and sometimes tragic attempts to cope. WT CLUB TOURNAMENT: Sunday 4 July 9am start. Cost $10. Nominations close Sunday 27 June. Nominations and information to paulinefraley@gmail.com. Wednesday 11 May: The Wagtails had the bye. Friday 14 May: Whistlers played at Caloundra, against Racquettes. It was a beautiful day and we all were happy to be out there to play. We enjoyed the day with a good win. Score was 48-11 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Aki Lepper, Brenda Warner, Paula Cudmore and Annie Quarmby. Wednesday 19 May: When the Wagtails left Maleny it was raining, but sunny in Eumundi. However, by the time they arrived in Eumundi and got on the courts they only managed to play one set before being rained off. Both teams were keen to wait to see what the weather was going to do and eventually they managed to play the full 8 sets. Although Eumundi Miss Gems won on the day, the Wagtails played well and provided good competition. Thanks go to Cheryl Cavanagh, Cynthia Garvie, Sheryn Golledge & Sonia Douglas. Friday 21 May: The Whistlers had a slow start playing one of the top teams in their division. The day gradually got better – Mooloolaba Legends living up to their name winning 7 sets 47 games to 1 set 25 games. Players were Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Annie Quarmby and Maree Hooley. Sunday 23 May: The Woompoos had the bye. The Wikings played Nambas at Witta. The weather was ne, and the tennis was of a high standard. All players were outstanding sports, though Rob claims to have been robbed. Sue who was lling in for Nambas injured her hamstring; however, the injury did not detract from her performance. John Poole, who has been taking too many anti-in ammatories, is facing both a colonoscopy and an endoscope for stomach issues. Glenn Smith swept the shed without being asked. Rob Weller and Cindy Harris won on a tie-breaker. One ball was lost in snakeinfested gardens. Filling out the team was Ian Matnnesoe and Stacey English. Score was 4-8 sets, 43-63 games. Sarah Widin lost to Howard Williams and Donna Manning lost to Helen Matchett in the singles however, Nick Cram and Sarah, playing Howard and Helen, staged a comeback in the doubles with Sarah making a 9 break and pegging her ball out. Caloundra won the rubber 2 – 1.
