Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell Man killed in road accident at Landsborough Road + Montville Rd A 71-year-old man Kenilworth man died in a Brisbane hospital on Monday May 31st after his car was struck at the intersection of Landsborough-Maleny Road and Maleny-Montville Road on Friday May 28th. The injured male person was conveyed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition by the RACQ Life Flight helicopter. Initial investigations indicate a four-wheel-drive driven by a 51 year old Sunshine Coast woman was travelling east on Landsborough Maleny Road when it collided with a stationary utility at Maleny Montville Road.
Affordable Housing
Access to affordable housing—or housing full stop—has been bubbling away as an issue in the electorate of Glass House for some time, but for the past 12 months it has become critical. The SEQ Regional Plan prevents many landowners from rezoning and subdividing their properties. The government must begin the review of the SEQ Regional Plan now. We know that that process takes at least 12 months. Let us get it started and let us put all the options on the table—higher density, green eld and urban expansion. Let us get on and build the infrastructure South-East Queensland needs.
We Thank the Vollies
Recently to celebrate National Volunteer Week which ran from Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd May 2021, along with Councillor Winston Johnston I joined the volunteers from the Maleny Visitor Centre at High Tea at The Orangery!
Police are still determining the cause of the crash but local MP Andrew Powell says regardless of the investigation the intersection must be upgraded. The Member for Glasshouse put forward a petition to the transport minister in 2017 calling for action on this intersection. "I suspect that what we will see fairly quickly is a speed reduction through there," Mr Powell said. "But what we're seeing across the hinterland is speed reductions are being used for these more complex problems when they really need a road upgrade.” The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating. The Department of Transport says it's unable to comment further while investigations into the crash are under way. Remember. “Road Safety starts with you”.
We thanked our amazing Maleny Visitor Information Centre volunteers. Our State would be lost without all of our priceless and precious volunteers. Each year some six million volunteers throughout Australia dedicate over 600 million hours to help others. Overall people were most likely to volunteer for a sport and physical recreation organisation (39.1%), followed by religious organisations (23.3%) and education and training Thank you to all the volunteers out there!

Agreseal Concrete Sealer
Sealing & Resealing Existing Exposed Aggregate
Agreseal™ concrete sealer utilises advanced technology developed by Nutech over nearly 40 years. Agreseal™ is a ready to use clear glaze speci cally formulated to seal and protect decorative exposed aggregate concrete surfaces and to improve concrete surface performance and appearance.
Prior to commencement: Determine whether the existing Aggregate has been previously sealed. To determine an existing coating: Refer Nutech Coating Test Kit for detailed instructions or contact Nutech Paint.
Agreseal™ provides an attractive nish for new and old exposed aggregate surfaces. It also provides excellent protection against fading and powdering of oxide colours, staining and marking due to contaminants including foodstuffs, oil and grease.
Very old, incompatible, delaminating, problem sealers:
Agreseal is a deep penetrating, solvent-based acrylic sealer that provides a glossy wet look to the aggregate. Agreseal is recommended as a twocoat system which will provide a durable surface, ideal for pedestrian and light vehicle traf c. Agreseal repels water and enhances aggregate and concrete colour, whilst protecting the surface against most stains such as grease and oil.
•
These types of coatings or sealers should be completely removed. Stripping with NuEcoSafe Strip Industrial (refer to the relevant TDS) is recommended, to remove all of the existing coatings.
•
After coating removal, refer to the un-coated existing exposed aggregate recommendations.
Agreseal™ can also be used as a decorative and protective coating system on a wide range of concrete paving and building applications excluding clay and terra cotta bricks and tiles. It is applied at a rate of two coats @ 3-5 square metres per litre per coat.

Cars of Yesteryear 1899 Renault Type B Coupe The rst 1899 Renault Type B Coupe Voiturette was designed by the maker's creator Louis Renault in 1898. The rst Voiturette was sold to a friend of Louis' father after going for a ride with Louis along Rue Lepic on December 24, 1898. Twelve more cars were sold that night. The main reason for the man to buy the car was the incredible ability of the car to climb streets without any dif culty and its fuel economy. The car mounted a De Dion-Bouton 1 cylinder engine, which allowed it to reach a top speed of 32 km/h (20 mph). The rst Voiturettes mounted De Dion-Bouton engines. Continental tires were used for the car, a make still used for several modern Renaults today. Louis Renault invented the sedan in 1899. The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Finally on his way”
On the eve of Dollys Day, “Congratulations everyone who’s donated to Dolly's Dream” together we have now raised almost $9,000 for Dolly’s Dream. Thanks everyone - this is a great effort so let’s all keep it up. II was thinking of the Maleny Show on the last weekend in May. I hope it all went well. I went to the Longreach Show on May 14th and spread my message about the Royal Flying Doctor and Dolly’s Dream, but they needed no introduction as both causes are well known in country Queensland.
I don’t get drunk but I do get dumb when I’m tired , take for instance spending 2hrs last night working out how to theoretically move the motorbike onto the nose of the tractor and in its place putting a small pen for a miniature horse, doing up all the measurements, weight calculations, working out if my special air hitch would still be ok, only to then work out that after all this planning, wait why the hell do you want a miniature horse?
Did you know?
I have been joined by another member of the travelling team. I am not too sure just how Bitsa will take to having some company. I hope that it will be OK and no disputes! Photo Left: Bitsa looks cosy and very content. Lucky little girl Here's to a cheeky-faced young Australian with a big heart and n even bigger dream. Bon voyage from Maleny, and safe travels Sam. You can follow Sam’s adventures via his Facebook Page at “The Travelling Jackaroo” https://www.facebook.com/ thetravellingjackaroo
Did you know that just a $50 donation could help purchase infusion pump lines, which are used by the Flying Doctor’s aeromedical teams to deliver uids safely into a patient's body And a $75 donation could help the Flying Doctor purchase paediatric de brillator pads, which monitor a child’s heart.
Sams proposed route - Maleny to Maleny!
Be a real “Mate” Make sure that you look after your mates - Treat them all well!.

What are your children up to on-line Police are warning parents in Queensland to monitor their children's social media use following an increase in child exploitation offences during the last year. Much of it is via instant messaging on social media sites including Snapchat and Facebook. Without parental supervision and a willing child, it is easier for child sex offenders to form strong relationships with children online. The key messages that we have here, is that parents need to be aware of what their children are up to online, if they become aware of something that is of concern, they should come to police. It is important for parents to be aware that some children actively seek and participate in sexually explicit conversation and have voluntarily met with people they meet online to engage in sexual contact. For this reason it is important for parents to monitor their children’s online activity. Truthful Jones says
An Old Codger’s Thoughts and opinion Advice to schools and Sporting Clubs in Victoria is advocating avoiding terms like “mum”, “dad”, “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” as a result of a push in Victorian schools to curb the dropout and suicide rates of LGBTQI+ young people. This comes as a result of sex education campaigner, Chanel Contos working with the Victorian Government on lessons that she hopes will teach students about “toxic masculinity” and “slut shaming”. Students are also encouraged to ask others which pronouns they use and to then use those pronouns when addressing that person. This program is focused on addressing the very serious impacts that bullying and discrimination has on LGBTIQ+ people, children, and young people in particular. Ms Contos’ push has already made waves in NSW, where students are expected to have a much bigger say on what their sex education lessons will look like with a much greater emphasis on teaching school students about sexual consent. Among other recommendations include unisex bathrooms and non-gendered sporting teams, is the use of inclusive language to prevent assumptions from being made about a person’s sex, sexuality or gender identity. A spokeswoman from the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network said, “We’re encouraging people to speak up and actively support LGBTIQ+ children and young people because when someone is experiencing bullying, silence often feels like indifference, which can create a terrible sense of isolation.” As an Old Codger my opinion is that “what does this issue have to do with the schools?” It’s our jobs as parents to teach our children about life and let teachers teach children to set them up for life to be creative thinkers and what they need to be able to exceed in life. Today, there is generally a lack of respect shown to others. Respect means that you accept somebody for who they are, even when they're different from you or you don't agree with them. Respect in your relationships builds feelings of trust, safety, and wellbeing. Respect doesn't have to come naturally – it is something you learn. As parents the majority of us might like to be called “Mum and Dad - him and her or other “pet names” used within the family. If all children were taught RESPECT by THEIR PARENTS” a lot of this would be unnecessary!

And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” Truthful says that this nephew is an Airbus 380 pilot for QANTAS. He was recently on his way across the Atlantic ying consistently at 800 km/h at 30,000 feet, when suddenly a Euro ghter with Tempo Mach 2 appears. The pilot of the ghter jet slows down, ies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: "Airbus ight, boring ight isn’t it? Take care and have a look here!” He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, only to swoop down almost to sea level in a breathtaking dive. He loops back next to the Airbus and asks, "Well, how was that?" The Airbus pilot answers: "Very impressive, but now have a look here!" The jet pilot watches the Airbus, but nothing happens. It continues to y stubbornly straight, with the same speed. After ve minutes, the Airbus pilot radioed, "Well, what are you saying now?" The jet pilot asks confused: "What did you do?" The other laughs and says, "I got up, stretched my legs, went to the back of the ight to the bathroom, got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon cake. The moral of the story is: When you are young, speed and adrenaline seems to be great. But as you get older and wiser, comfort and peace are not to be despised either. This is called S.O.S.: Smarter.

Local Groups News There is a Recreational Group in Maleny and Surrounds that will cater for your desires!
Maleny Singers do it for the Rural Fire ghters It was only 18 months ago that Australia’s worst recorded summer of bush res devastated many communities on the east coast. Shortly after that Maleny Singers decided that the proceeds of their annual musical production go to support the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade to help them in their role of protecting our community from similar res in future. Unfortunately, community events like this were all cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 virus. Now, with restrictions becoming more manageable, the Singers are still keen to support our re ghters. The Maleny Singers under the guidance of musical director, Margaret Taylor will be performing “The
Yeomen of the Guard”, one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s more durable comic operas. It will be presented at the Maleny Community Centre on June 12 at 6.30pm and June 13,19 and 20 at 2pm. It will feature locals; Colin Dunn, Evalee Sharples and Viera Keogh in lead roles. Costumes will be coming from all over the country, many of them free of charge, as other communities join in to help the effort. Critics say this is one of Arthur Sullivan’s best scores, and the storyline, although as full of quip and humour as ever, carries more emotional weight than others in the repertoire. Lions Club of Maleny - Blackall Range perform cleanup The weather was perfect when the Maleny Lions Club team turned up at 2pm to the job in North Maleny. Members included Jess (with an impressive back brace), Garry, John te Kloot, as well as our newest member Laurie Fawns and her willing husband Ben. The job was a further effort to clean up the massive g tree that had fallen last year in the yard of a local widowed pensioner. A couple of Lions Club members had put some time into it months ago, and a Range Care gardener had also spent signi cant time in trying to tame this monster fallen tree. Six was the magic number of workers, with two on chain saws and a further 4 cleaning up and loading the re. Enough people to get a lot of work done,

Maleny - Conondale connection to Redcliffe’s Hornibrook Bridge The Hornibrook Bridge was opened by Premier Arthur Moore on the 14th October, 1935. It connected the Redcliffe District to Brisbane. It was designed by Manuel Hornibrook and built from 1932 to 1935 by the rm of M.R. Hornibrook at a cost of £120,000. Prior to the construction of the Hornibrook Viaduct, the Redcliffe Peninsula was accessed via two main methods of transport. - ferry and road. Road transportation in particular was of great concern to the residents of the Redcliffe area.
When the bridge was closed it was one of the oldest all timber and girder bridges in Australia., At 2.684 km long it was not only the longest the longest in the country, but was the longest bridge in the southern hemisphere, and the second longest in the world after the Bridge in the United States Of America.
humps in the roadway. These humps were so that boats of certain sizes could nd their way further up Hays Inlet past the bridge. The hardwood used in piles was brought down theNorth Pine River on barges. The hardwood used in piles and girders mostly came from timber mills around Maleny.
When built the Hornibrook Bridge operated as a Toll Bridge by the Hornibrook Company until 1975. The toll booths were located on the Clontarf (north) end. The bridge remained in service until 1979. This bridge originally had two traf c lanes and a pedestrian footpath. It was named Sir Manuel Hornibrook, the chief engineer of the project and Director of M.R. Hornibrook Pty. Ltd.
The Bridge has now been replaced with two concrete bridges and is now called the Ted Smout Highway.
(Photo above Toll booths at the Redcliffe End of the Hornibrook Highway)
However, it was the timber that became the bridge's downfall, with too much of the Hornibrook's hardwood predominantly ironbark rotting for the bridge to be safe.
His father, John Hornibrook came from Ireland in the 1890’s and in 1896 settled in The Obi Valley outside of Kenilworth and it was in that area that Sir Manuel Hornibrook lived until 1903.

Now the bridge has been demolished, except for a 100m section that will be preserved and refurbished not only for historical purposes, but for the use of local shermen.
For those who remember the old Hornibrook Bridge you will remember that the bridge had

Vision is to “To Save and Display Maleny's History Some Maleny history with Harvey Bryce The transport of timber from the Conondale Ranges and the Bellthorpe Forestry areas to Redcliffe was a daunting task taking into account the type of machinery and transport available in that time.
Even the unloading of the logs on arrival at the mill were unloaded by a steam driven crane.
The Conondale Ranges and the Bellthorpe Forestry areas supplied timber for milling for well over 100 years before it was closed to the timber industry and classi ed as a National Park in 1977.
The framing saw was very rare in that it had several blades working at the same time to break down logs into several tches which were then cut into the necessary sized pieces of timber.
Much of the timber was taken from the Conondale Ranges and milled at aspecially built timber mill in Ahern’s Road, Conondale.
This mill was later sold to Campbell Green and operated as a mill by the Green family until well into the 1990’s.
This steam driven mill was specially built by Hornibrook to mill that timber. The steam powered mill was powered by the sawdust created in the milling process.
Photo Above: Ted Smout Bridge circa 2011. Replacement Bridge
Campbell was a well known timber man throughout the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
The mill ran off a ingle ywheel about 25 foot in diameter driving a single line shaft under the mill ooring. Individual machines were powered by canvas belts.
Now that the life of the old Hornibrook Bridge is over the timber will live on for decades to come.
His family still own the property on which the mill operated. When the mill was established the area provided the majority of hardwood in Queensland.
Much of the prime timber is taken to Kempsey NSW, to a company that specialises in recycling quality timber. The rotten and termite ridden timbers will ended up as as a new arti cial reef in Moreton Bay.

Despite the heritage listing of the Hornibrook Bridge in 1994, safety concerns about the rotting deck timbers led to the decision to demolish most of the bridge in mid 2011. The bridge portals and one hundred meters have been retained. For detailed information showing the process in detail visit the web page below:
