Christmas is coming, and we give you plenty of festive ideas and events, in both HT and our pull-out Christmas Gift Guide. We also have features on the challenges of being a dairy farmer, a travelling Maleny nurse, Dale Jacobsen’s journey to Antarctica, and a woman who turned good food into a cruise! Our hinterland markets have plenty to offer every kind of shopper, and there are poems, letters, cartoons and a crossword to enjoy with a cup of coffee. Creative Cuts is full of entertainment, workshops, and festivals, and if you need to entertain the kids during December, check out the ideas on page 23. My own plans? The wooden advent calendar is in place, but this year we also have a ‘reverse advent calendar’ – a box for a new, non-perishable item each day, ready to take to our chosen community centre for Christmas. As always, giving is the best gift of all.

s e m i t h g u o t As part of the oldest agribusiness in Australia, John and Emma Ruddle are proud to be dairy farmers on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Situated in a prime position just outside of Maleny, they have worked hard to breed and maintain a dairy herd in what is some of the toughest times the industry has faced.

OHN AND EMMA Ruddle are a part of a multigenerational dairy farming family that began with the arrival of John’s great, great grandfather in 1909 from England. The family business survived two world wars, but John and Emma are very aware they might be the last generation of dairy farmers on their property. “We know there are always ups and downs in farming and usually the ups outweigh the downs. We are so dependent on the weather in farming, it’s not something you can control or really plan for when season after season has been too tough to get ahead. What I do know is that we need rain, desperately” John said. “I understand completely where that dairy farmer on Facebook working for $2.46 an hour is coming from. It seems like all our farm input costs have gone skyrocketing, but our income hasn’t matched those rising costs”. Despite the tough times John and Emma can’t see themselves anywhere else, doing anything else. While Emma grew up on a sheep farm near Orange in NSW, she moved for the warmer climes of the Sunshine Coast where, in time, she met John. When they married, she returned to farming life. A talented family portrait photographer, Emma has curated the Maleny Show photography competition for a few years. “In a way, it is great to have something away from the farm to be involved with. The Maleny Show is still a huge part of the social life of the town”. John and Emma are in agreement about the benefits of raising their two boys on the farm. “They are so free to please themselves. Cooper and Ashton ride motorbikes and go on adventures. They are always up to something,” Emma said, smiling. “I wouldn’t want to raise my boys anywhere else. They help us out with the calves and milking the same way I

helped my dad,” said John. “If the boys want to take it on (the farm) we would support them, but we hope they learn a trade outside of the farm as well,” he added. John is passionate about both his milk and his cows, always looking for ways to improve both. Presently, the farm supports a milking herd of two hundred Holstein Friesian cows, and with dry cows and rising heifers making a total herd of around 320. The herd started by his grandfather were all Jerseys and were milked in a 16 bay walk-through dairy. Three hundred cows, twice a day was quite a workload. In those days the milk went straight to the new cheese factory in Coral Street, Maleny. John’s father later transitioned the herd to Friesians, while John himself now has the herd at 98% Holsteins. In a really good season Ruddle Dairy can produce 1.5 million litres of milk. “It’s all about what we feed the cows and you only get quality milk when you give them quality feed and pasture,” he explained. Present conditions have seen a significant drop in milk production. “The cows just can’t produce milk when it’s dry like this,” said John.

The Ruddle dairy farm photo Emma Ruddle

Previously milking for large producers, John and Emma’s milk can now be found in Maleny Cheese, as they sell their milk to Obi Obi Dairies. “We have a solid relationship with Obi Obi Dairies and look forward to what the future holds, John said.

“The 10c per litre levy that's being talked about would be a great help, but we don’t know yet if all dairy farms will get it. I really hope it happens, shared Emma. “The way it is now, the help arrives too late. Farmers are leaving the land and they don’t come back. It’s too much work to rebuild a herd. You can’t just buy them, they have to be bred. That takes years. Maleny used to have 15-plus dairy farms; I think there are only a handful left now, she said. When asked if they have a favourite cow, I was taken to meet Sadee and her brand new calf Saige. Saige is Sadee’s first calf and John is as pleased as any new father with both of them. Sadee is more than just a favourite cow though, as she represents new genetics for the herd and a bright spot on the horizon. “We know we have to keep going, we have hope and a proud family history. We do enjoy the lifestyle farming provides for us, even though the work hours are long. “We have a great committed team who make it much easier to get through the days. We look forward to seeing what the spring season holds, said John and Emma. “We may not go on fancy overseas holidays, but we love being part of the Maleny community. Our boys attend the local primary school and play soccer for the Maleny Rangers, she shared, “But I wouldn’t say no to that overseas holiday!

Dairy cattle arrived with the First Fleet in 1788. The use of animals for milk and milk products can be dated back 9000 years to the Middle East and Asia. They used sheep, goats and cattle. Modern dairying began around 1900 with the introduction of pasteurisation.

DJale acobsen The adventure continues Last month, we shared the first part of the remarkable story of writer, musician and explorer, Dale Jacobsen. This month, we learn of her fulfilling a childhood dream in Antarctica, visiting the huts of her heroes and writing about the great continent.

by Gay Liddington

“We are all adventurers here, I suppose, and wild doings in wild countries appeal to us as nothing else could do. It is good to know that there remain wild corners of this dreadfully civilised world.” Robert Falcon Scott

T

HE MID ‘50s was a time when the heroic exploration era of Antarctica had just ended and the focus was on science. Eight-year-old Dale Jacobsen sat in a Weller’s Hill classroom entranced and inspired by a teacher obsessed with the ice desert lorded over by glaciers, travelled by huskies. The child washed her face in winter water from a concrete tub in the backyard, let it dry in the cold wind and pretended she was in Antarctica. She spent her time reading about it, dreaming about it, making up stories about it and pretended she was out there on an expedition with Scott going to the pole. These fantasies fed the child’s imagination leading Dale to realise her dream, more than 60 years later. “I spent my life reading and studying about Antarctica and just before my mum died in 2012, at the age of 90, she said, ‘When I go, you won’t be a millionaire but you will get your trip to Antarctica. I want you to go and check out what trip you’re going to do.’ “When I went on that 32-day trip from South America with Oceanwide Expeditions, I clearly remember sailing into the Ross Sea. It was beautiful, and misty, snowing and freezing. I stood alone on deck, up on the bow and the enormity of being deep in Antarctica was overwhelming. The atmosphere, missing Mum. I cried and cried.

BEST WISHES One of the real joys this holiday season is the opportunity to say thank you to our wonderful clients and their pets and wish you all the very best for the new year. “Here was I, honouring the promise I’d made my eightyear-old self and Mum was with me in spirit. I was going into the huts of Shackleton and Scott, my heroes. It was one of the most intense moments of my life. “I came back a totally different woman. I knew that this world was too big and beautiful to lose yourself in your worries. After six months, I was so miserable because that was it, I’d been! I missed the ship and being at sea as much as I missed everything about the continent. “At that low point, I decided to write. I had kept a detailed journal and so, created a book, Why Antarctica – a Ross Sea Odyssey, then learnt how to craft an interactive eBook taking it to another level.” Dale told Oceanwide Expeditions about her latest book which lead to a mutually beneficial arrangement. She wrote blogs for their website and they promoted her book. An offer of signing people up for the Antarctic trip gave Dale the opportunity for yet another adventure, a goal that was realised. In between times, Dale booked a 12-day trip where she kayaked among the icebergs, a skill acquired beforehand on Baroon Pocket Dam. “Ten weeks later, I was off again on the second 32-day trip. I got so much more out of it because I was in the moment and knew exactly where I was. All these historical places and glaciers that I’d read about all my life…there they were there in front of me.” It seems that with author Dale Lorna Jacobsen, there’s always another book and it’s no surprise that her leading

lady in this latest work of historically based fiction is a woman biologist who was at Mawson in the ‘80s. “The reason for that time in the ’80s is three-fold: One is that there were only about four women to 20 men there. I wanted to have a mid-winter, husky expedition with a woman biologist and, it involved the sinking of the Nella Dan. She used to take the expeditioners down and sank off Macquarie Island in 1987. “This all fitted neatly into a bundle. I met so many people who had been down there at that time…ones who had run with the huskies. I recorded their stories and accessed their diaries to create the novel, Aurora - Running with Huskies.” There appears no end to the achievements of Dale Jacobsen, scientist, author, adventurer, and musician, who throws in: “I forgot to mention, I combine my writing and environmental ‘talents’ as a researcher and interpretive sign writer for Queensland Parks and Wildlife; am a crazy craftswoman, mainly intricate and large counted cross-stitch and have been sewing my own clothes since I was a teenager.”

Add to the mix: “Along the way, I joined the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition Club (ANARE Club) who have commissioned me to write a memoir of a 98-year-old expeditioner. That’s going to happen next year. “So, I’m living my dream. I probably won’t get to go back to the Antarctic again and that hurts, but no matter how many times I go, I’ll always want to go back. This is a lifelong thing that will never resolve but at least I’m living Antarctica… researching it, writing about it.” She is ageless, uncompromising and sets a formidable example. Words from Scott’s last expedition reflect my friend, Dale Jacobsen. “Fortune would be in a hard mood indeed if it allowed such a combination of knowledge, experience, ability, and enthusiasm to achieve nothing.” Robert Falcon Scott, Scott's Last Expedition: The Journals They walk amongst us…

into her own hands and began learning how to heal herself naturally. “I spent a decade living with chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, weight fluctuations, endometriosis and just generally lacking inner vitality, before hitting rock bottom in 2012.” Paige researched and trained to gain a thorough knowledge of the effects of adapting the quality and type of foods she ate, to work on her own wellness patterns. “I revitalised my body and created a new empowered sense of ‘normal’ and so I turned those skills outwards to help others.” Paige is a certified health coach and founder of her business, The Whole Connection, which offers health coaching services. Developing her popular six-week program for clients, she included a weekly menu planner, meal planners and offered one-on-one consultations to help people reach their goals. “I get a sense of achievement from coaching people to tap into and evolve in their own patterns of health and inner wisdom.” This year, Paige took on the biggest challenge that her business has ever engaged in, the first ever Australian whole food, plant-based cruise event. She designed the inaugural journey to showcase her coaching on a whole new level, as a health and wellness retreat at sea with 20 presentations and workshops. “I developed it to include three-course meals and based the program around the teachings that I share in my course - avoiding cravings, gaining motivation and increasing vitality.” The nine-day cruise on board the luxury ship, Celebrity

Solstice, was a resounding success for all that attended, including the panel of five health and wellness presenters. “This was the first time an event like this had ever been held in Australia and I wanted to gauge the interest.” Paige developed the cruise to include daily presentations in a range of modalities featuring a nutritionist, a medical doctor, a naturopath and two cooking coaches. “The cruise was created for anyone interested in making better choices for their health and wellbeing and an opportunity to sample plant-based food through our exclusive menu.

Reflecting on the cruise concept she is considering co-ordinating another voyage in 2020, if interest remains high. “We have been collecting expressions of interest through our website for a possible cruise in the future, it depends on demand, so I guess we will see what the people want. “I am also considering a land-based retreat for 2019 and people can register their interest - ideal for those who don’t like cruise holidays. For now, the focus is on a healthy Christmas lunch with family and friends and an adorable new addition to the family, Daisy the pug dog. “We keep things simple and delicious all year round at home with our meals and Christmas is no exception. “Depending on the weather, I generally create a variety of delicious salads with beans and rice. If it is cooler and we are wanting a more traditional style of Christmas lunch I will make a 'neatloaf' or ‘tofurky’ complete with stuffing and a variety of roast vegetables. Paige shares a sample of their Christmas menu and encourages you to try integrating more whole food plantbased foods into your special day. “There are so many easy options out there from bejewelled pomegranate salads through to simple sorbets for a hot afternoon - try them all! “Whole food plant-based nutrition is a powerful tool and accessible to our community with local Sunshine Coast and Hinterland fresh food markets and organic food stores close by. Whether land-based or ocean bound, Paige is a success story and an inspiration to people struggling with chronic conditions. “I look forward in 2019 to helping people restore their health and showcasing how delicious and easy embracing a whole food plant-based lifestyle can be.

Nursing the

world Turning a nursing career into a lifelong adventure came naturally to Maleny’s Helen Walker, as she helped those in need in myriad locations, some of which were exotic, remote or even dangerous.

by Judy Fredriksen

ALMING A WOUNDED, wild-eyed and cussing Indigenous man at a remote clinic was all in a day’s work for Helen Walker, Rural and Isolated Practice Endorsed Registered Nurse (RIPEN). In most cases, the autonomy of Helen’s job means there is no doctor physically present, though a doctor is only a phone call away. In this confronting case, Helen was able to draw on her RIPEN training to settle the patient and successfully treat him. Helen’s enthusiasm for the humanities, forged from a lifetime of helping those in need of medical care, is unmistakable. It punctuates her cheerful manner: “I get satisfaction by helping people help themselves. Back in the 1970s, while women in Australia were still warming their vocal cords to demand equal rights, Helen was already off following her heart and embarking on a career in nursing. 40 years later from her base in Maleny, it is a career that still nourishes her. At a time when a woman’s occupation was expected to

play second fiddle to her husband’s profession, Helen instinctively mastered her own destiny, seizing opportunities at each new exotic location as she moved around the world. Helen completed her basic nurse training at St Helens Methodist Hospital in Brisbane, the forerunner to the Wesley Hospital. “The training was very thorough; we learnt to do things properly. From there, Helen’s first posting was Townsville where she discovered her interest in eye health. “I just loved the eyes, she says, her eyes shining, and for a time, she made eye health the focus of her career. Midwifery, a craft she still practises, was another skill she gained. Then upon moving to London, Helen was fortunate to be accepted for specialised training at Moorfields Eye Hospital, central London. It was the oldest and largest centre for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in Europe. Here, she earned the Moorfields Medal, a reward acknowledging she had completed her nursing diploma.

/.?<$5)*?*.$A"@@.>*$BC$/";.:$4"=;!>?> Helen Walker, in between travels, in November 2012

“Back then you could wear that anywhere (in the world) with pride because you were an ophthalmic nurse from Moorfields.” Kingston, Jamaica, where she worked in the Ophthalmic Unit of the University Hospital of the West Indies for two years, was the next part of Helen’s adventure. “It was very interesting,” she says, “all the eye cases came to us. “You would take an esky and go to meet the plane to actually get the eye that came from America to go and do the corneal graft for a patient.” The eye would have come from a donor and the healthy cornea would be sewn onto the patient who needed it. The next stamp in her passport came from Israel, where she briefly worked on a Kibbutz as a volunteer nurse. Jobs in the Kibbutz varied, and life generally revolved around a wire factory and raising chickens. Helen was only there for a short time, but recalls the frequent use of chamomile tea to treat ailments. “A lot of chamomile flowers were being put out for infusion,” she laughs, “but I had no idea why! I was young and inexperienced.” Helen finally returned to Australia, briefly visiting Maleny in the early 1980s and settling here permanently in 1989.

She took some time out to have a family and in between, still found time to work as a Blue Nurse. Then in 2004, Helen lucked across a unique opportunity - to serve on the Mercy Ship, working out of Benin, between Togo and Nigeria, on the west coast of Africa. “The region is home to Voodoo and it was rumoured there were many Shamans about.” With only one other eye nurse to help her, Helen would have 5,000 patients lined up seeking assistance, many needing cataract surgery. They would have travelled for days to get there and some of them would have corneas scarred so badly, there was little the staff of the Mercy Ship could do to help. As the Mercy Ship was run by a Christian organisation, those who were rejected for surgery could be comforted in a prayer station. “This often ameliorated the sense of rejection in the patients.” Since 2004, Helen has been working as a relief nurse in rural hospitals, Cape York, remote communities and islands in the Torres Strait, as well as Cocos Keeling Islands in the Indian Ocean. Type 2 Diabetes and obesity are the more common health issues in these locations, so Helen takes pride in working with her patients to “enthuse them to own their own health.” To do this, you need to “listen, respect them and educate them,” says Helen. “Island communities live off the sea and some grow their own fruit and veggies. But for others, it’s much easier to go to the general store and buy tinned food. Sometimes the fresh food that arrives on the barge is not of good quality.” Helen engages her patients in the decision-making for the management of their condition and ownership of care. “When a patient has his point of view listened to and respected, he feels valued and so can confidently proceed towards a path of wellness. When his health has improved, he is a role model for his community; the ripples in a pond extend outwards. “Remote area patients are usually motivated to see their grandchildren grow up, and that inspires them to want to get well,” she says, sharing her trademark smile. Although Helen loves being involved in the Maleny community where she sings in a choir, her thirst for adventure and travel has never waned. Before her next relief posting to a remote settlement, she’s jaunting off to Sri Lanka for a holiday and looking forward to learning all about yet another colourful culture.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico OU’RE GOING TO MEXICO? You are in for an amazing time. Mexico is one of the most incredible countries in the world. There’s so much life and vitality - the colours, natural beauty, culture, history, music, and of course the wonderful food. Well, maybe not so much the music. Mexico is full of fascinating traditions and superstitions, among them Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead festival. Contrary to popular misconception, it’s not ‘Mexican Halloween’, but rather a celebration of life and death stemming from the fusion of culture and religion. Events take place from October 28 to November 2, with the most important days marked as November 1 (Day of the Children) and November 2 (Day of the Dead). Oaxaca is among the most famous places in Mexico to celebrate Day of the Dead. The use of marigolds and preparation of altars, or ofrendas, is ubiquitous. The orange marigold, called cempasuchitl by the Nahuatl (better known as Aztecs) and flor de muerto by Mexicans, traces its use to the Aztecs, who believed it guided the souls of their loved ones back to their homes and altars for this one special occasion. Altars are generally created from October 30-31, though preparations may start much earlier. Offerings and items belonging to the deceased are placed on these shrines. I’ve seen altars

During the festival, it is forbidden to take any food or drink from the altar. After the souls leave, having enjoyed their fill, families are free to help themselves. Throughout the festival it’s traditional to eat pan de muertos, a sweet bread prepared only for Dia de los Muertos, which is usually dipped in hot chocolate. with longstanding custom? While the delights of hot chocolate and fresh pastries are reason enough to visit, there is something quite magical about being with thousands of strangers at night, in a cemetery lit by thousands of flickering candles, breathing in the scent of marigolds. Families gather at the tombs of their relatives, laughing and singing, cooking on open fires, on barbecues, or on the graves themselves. In Oaxaca, there are daily parades (comparsas) and calendas, processions characterised by the carrying of oversize papier-mâchĂŠ dolls, or monas. People dress up in costumes and carry banners and figurines. As the parades wind through the streets, onlookers join. It’s quite a party atmosphere. Day of the Dead is an expression of Mexico’s culture. It’s not gruesome or mournful, but rather beautiful, vibrant, moving and a remarkable experience.

hE CloCk ShoP in Montville is an iconic building and business, owned by Phil and Fran hoffman, who are celebrating 25 years at the helm. “We have a dedicated team,” shared Phil. “Daniel and Rebecca are full time and we have amazing casual staff Meleta, Antonio, Robyn and Chris, and an onsite clock maker, Bruce Davis.” Before the Clock Shop was established in Montville, they lived and worked in Toowoomba and the surrounding area. “After many years as a meat inspector I was looking for a change,” said Phil, “and the opportunity came up to start selling German clocks imported from the Black Forest Region. I knew nothing of the industry but the Phil and Daniel Hoffman with a wall of popular cuckoo clocks

opportunity, coupled with a fondness for clocks, was the start of the Clock Shop in Montville.” The clocks are sourced directly from the manufacturers in Germany. Each year Phil and his staff travel to Germany and visit the factories where they review new models and place orders for the coming year. “We primarily focus on quality, German manufactured products including weather stations, beer steins, Christmas decorations, carvings, and music boxes, plus porcelain miniatures, Austrian linen and souvenirs.”

“the most popular item is the cuckoo clock”

They also sell an affordable range of quality wrist and pocket watches and European toys. Despite everything on offer, the most popular item is the cuckoo clock. “We have literally hundreds on display ranging from $85 - $5000,” smiled Phil. “The kids make a beeline to the wall of bouncing and swinging doll clocks! “The cuckoo clock is actually my favourite,” admitted Phil. “It is handcrafted, made from wood and usually tells a story. The legend says that those who heard the cuckoo had good luck.”

Jamie has been a part of the Maleny Lane since before day one. It’s the Maleny Pie Guy headquarters, where he bakes fresh every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, (and public holiday Mondays) from 10am ‘til 3pm. It’s the only place where you can grab his full range of pastries, (including frozen, ready-to-bake family pies), his full range of sweet slices (including the chai-spiced apple slice) and his new range of ice creams! Keep cool this summer with the blondie-infused

caramel or cacao brownie ice-creams. Keeping true to his ‘using local’ ethos, both icecreams are made with Maleny Dairies’ milk and cream, local free-range eggs and locally-made blondie and brownie, his own of course! And I hear there are more cool, creamy creations to come. Like pies? Like the Maleny Pie Guy on Facebook. Like hip and funky market laneways? Like Maleny Lane on Facebook.

TIPS FOR LANDLORDS OF RETAIL PREMISES – PART 2 As a landlord of commercial premises it is important to identify what business your tenant will be carrying out from your premises so that you can prepare a lease that will comply with the requirements of the relevant act involved.

In Queensland commercial leases generally speaking come under two distinct areas; the first being retail shops which are governed by the Retail Shop Leases Act and the second being non retail shops governed by provisions of the Property Law Act. I shall concentrate my discussion on leases that come under the Retail Shop Leases Act. In PART 1 of this article I discussed the importance of Disclosure pursuant to the and giving the tenant early notice of the new market rental. When negotiating with your prospective tenant here are further important tips to keep in mind: • NOTICE ABOUT EXERCISING OPTION PERIODS there is an obligation on you as the Landlord to give the tenant notice that the time to take up the option period is coming up. This notice must be given at least two months’ prior to the option notice period detailed in the lease. • NOTICE ABOUT NO OPTION if the lease does not contain any option period you must also give your tenant notice that the lease is coming to an end. Failure to give such notice would result in the lease term automatically being extended by another six months from the time such notice is given by you!

Montville Artisan Village is the perfect place to shop

• BOND you are entitled to request that a bond be paid by the tenant. The amount of bond payable is often around one month’s rental.

6D\ *RRGE\H WR GULYHZD\ ZDVKRXWV &IJSVI

• LEGAL COSTS you have to pay for your own legal costs for preparing the lease.

%JXIV

• TENANT IS A COMPANY you should require that the directors of the tenant company be noted in the lease as guarantors. If the Company folds then the guarantors must perform the tenant’s obligations under the Lease.

Memories are made of this... by Victoria McGuin

APlETon loCAl, Marie o’Sullivan, is 91 and has spent much of her life recording her travels and experiences, from Papua new Guinea to the Sunshine Coast hinterland. her concern has been that these original journals in fading typewritten form, had no back-up copy. After attending to Marie

M

at home, and hearing her worries, Marie’s nurse from RangeCare contacted linda Bell, RangeCare’s volunteer coordinator in Flaxton, and asked if she knew someone who could help document Marie’s words in digital form. The result led to a recent gathering of members of RangeCare, with Marie’s friends and family, to celebrate the culmination of a labour of love and teamwork. linda explained how events progressed, “We didn’t have a volunteer who could help immediately, so I tried via Mapleton library. Within a day, Megan Dodd called, and she wasn’t at all daunted by the amount of work involved.”

“Megan needs a gold medal,” said Marie. over a few months Megan typed and formatted Marie’s work and pulled everything together. Margaret Evans, a RangeCare support worker had also helped with the original version many years prior, typing stories as Marie dictated, due to Marie’s deteriorating eyesight. “now we can make copies for my brother and sister, and keep the story going,” smiled kerry o’Sullivan, Marie’s daughter. This was the first time the group had all met, and everyone was quite emotional. “I am so happy for all that these people have done for me,” said Marie, with tears in her eyes. “What did you do to get all this attention?” joked big sister, Jeanie. I was shown a red hardback book, which records stories' from Marie’s time in Papua new Guinea, and holds much from Marie’s letters to her mother, and her sister, which both had kept. however, the new instalment covers Marie’s early years of a childhood in a different time, rich in detail. “My Scottish grandfather arrived in Australia with five pounds to set up his life, but he was used to hard work. When he was 12 he worked 12 hours a day, six days a week in a carpet factory in Scotland.” From here, the story unfurls through the pages – a fascinating insight for both family and historians. Megan managed to complete the work in two months, emailing linda with constant updates to comfort Marie, as Megan had the only copy of the journal! “It’s wonderful how things have worked out,” said linda. “And having Megan and Marie finally meet today is pretty special.” history is preserved, and friendships have been forged, through collaboration and kindness.

A special day for Marie O’Sullivan (front left) with Jeanie Mitchell, Kerry O’Sullivan, Angus and Margie Macdonald, Megan Dodd, and Linda Bell

AlEny nEIGhBoURhooD Centre (MnC) would like to express our thanks to Pia Buick Real Estate who successfully obtained a Realestate.com.au Advantage Community Grant 2018 on behalf of the Maleny neighbourhood Centre, amidst an overwhelming amount of quality submissions. The grant provides $1,500 inclusive of GST to the MnC to assist them in supporting our community. MnC supports local vulnerable families and individuals and has had a significant drop in donations this year, making it difficult to meet their obligations to deliver programs and support to our local community. To know more, contact 5499 9345. Nooreen Harris, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre

A great number of community groups supported the event providing over 50 volunteers to ensure everything ran smoothly. numerous stalls and activities provided additional engagement for everyone who attended. All the $12,000 raised will be distributed by lions to needy western Queensland communities, so a big thank to everyone who helped achieve this. Dr. Nita C Lester, President of the Organising Committee Mapleton

Music will return to Eudlo

I

ho WoUlD believe that a casual chat at the Mapleton Bowls Club one afternoon would lead so quickly to such a great community event to help our farmers. 12 musicians gave freely of their time providing continuous music from 10.30am to 6.30pm. At times there was standing room only!

WoUlD lIkE to let hT readers know that Eudlo Music nights are planning to be back on the April 6 weekend next year. Some acts are already saying they want to come back and are pencilling it in, so we are sure to have another great event musically. The plans for April include a Return to Woodstock concert (it’s been 50 years!). We’ll have a stage band for that and a range of different singers. There will also be a Return to 1969 fashion competition including boardwalk, and other plans are seeding…

The organising committee is very grateful for the generous support from businesses and individuals of the Sunshine

There are so many people who do so much for Eudlo Music nights - you know who you are, we thank you all. But I will

A great success

Bags of bags!

I

AM FInAlly getting around to sending you a huge ThAnk yoU for producing the article about the ‘It's in the Bag’ campaign and my role as volunteer in Maleny.

I've had a least five ladies come to my office, with your article in hand (cut out of the hT) with donations of goods / bags / products etc. It has most definitely increased the awareness of this charity and drive - and I'm thrilled to announce that this morning I counted 41 bags (last years total) that have been created, all lined up in my living room and I know of many more bags still on their way. So, please accept my sincere gratitude, Victoria, for your interest and support. Sue Krucker, Indigo Counselling Services, Maleny

Poets

CORNER

Poetry is an arrangement of language, artistic word pictures that attempt to inspire imagination, evoke emotion and provoke humour. A poet is an illustrator of words that creates beauty and intensity. It is time poets had a platform in the Hinterland Times, and here it is.

Out Here

It’s two tone brigalow belah country, out here. Out here mirror topped dams reflect a painted sky out here wedge-tailed eagles spy a bushranger landscape out here the rainbow serpent rises from its slumber out here always fills me with longing. It seems the sun moves so slowly, out here. Stout bottle trees cast shadows over the land. My father always said this was good grass country as long as you get the rain, out here. Out here old meat sheds cry of past slaughters out here old graveyards weep of past stories out here old churches whisper past prayers out here the past always haunts me. The night rustles to black, out here. Behind a moth-eaten theatre curtain the stagehands of time change the props. A polaroid dawn will develop, out here.

Driftwood

Out here a man dreams in the night of his father out here a child screams in the night for her mother out here forty years will disappear in an instant out here under a hundred million stars I hold the world asleep in my arms. © John Koenig

Life Life is like the river that flows beneath a bridge No sooner in the valley than flooding up the ridge. A time for every season, ecstatic joys and woes, No rules to bind its ebbing and none to guide its flows. Erosion of the landscape, forever changing scene, Nought on earth is constant; it’s never what it’s been. The stretching of a highway is changed to closing door The comfort of familiar things are suddenly no more. © Kath Fisher 1986

Cruise Ship Indulgence or The Perils of Pudding Sofas in shorts are feeding today Bloated of leg they waddle their way Past pastries puffed and cream ridden jelly Cheap perfumes prevail to counter the smelly And chairs seem to vanish so no one can find Quite overwhelmed by those massive behinds. On eclairs and slices and Danish they stuff Insatiable, bottomless, never enough With wallowing chins and downfallen tummy Fat fingers are groping for cakes made with honey. Massive of mammary like Gardens of Babylon All rise and subside with each wave that we travel on. Food to the deckchairs keeps appetite bolstered The flesh is not clothed but rather ‘upholstered’, And in black Lycra jocks, old men of bloat Like overdone dumplings in pool they float Dreaming obscenely of long past engagements Flaunting their soggy and drooping arrangements. It’s my observation, forget date of birth, Too long on a cruise ship will bugger your girth!

Becoming

by Bob Brown and Paul Thomas

In Becoming, Michelle obama reflects on her life before the White house and her eight years as First lady, discussing achievements and disappointments and speaking freely about her experiences in ways she hasn't done previously. She discusses how her childhood, growing up in Chicago, her education and career influenced the causes she chose to support in the White house. This is a fascinating read for those interested in American politics, but really for everyone who enjoys a well-written autobiography. one reviewer wrote: Obama writes with a refreshing candour, as though her keen awareness of her celebrity is matched only by her eagerness to shed the exhausting veneer that helped enable her husband’s political rise.

Bob Brown, conservationist and former Greens leader, and his partner Paul Thomas, document their three-month journey across the south and west of Australia. They travelled by sea and road to visit isolated Bush heritage protected properties, and in doing so, captured the beauty and diversity of the Australian landscape. The stories of the places and people they visited are complimented by beautiful photographs, making this celebration of Australia’s wilderness a wonderful gift.

ARA CooPER is a dynamic painter of all mediums, with a unique vision for artistic storytelling. As a result her work is unique, fresh and meaningful, both in subject and technique.

lara began painting almost 12 years ago, under the tutelage of renowned watercolour painter, Charles Sluga. Using painting as the expression of her concern for a more beautiful world, her work captures a complex mix of the real alongside the longed-for and imagined. lara has received many awards for her work, including the kernewek lowender Art Prize in 2013. In 2018 she finalised two years of illustration work on a beautiful children’s book by Rosanne hawke, to be published early 2019. lara now resides in beautiful Maleny with her family.

Mindful of Beauty is lara’s fourth solo exhibition, but her first in Maleny. Perhaps best described as snapshots of life, the exhibition covers portraiture, still life and figure painting.

A series of watercolour and oil paintings, it is a vibrant yet peaceful collection of work, which ask us to slow down and soak in the ordinary things which make life meaningful and beautiful.

The Cartoonist by Lara Cooper

Lara’s painting are on display at Sarah’s Unplugged, 31 Maple Street, Maleny, from December 6 to February 5.

Up the Creek

o

nCE UPon A TIME ... not too long ago, it was considered good practise to remove useless scrub from creek banks and replace it with pasture. not only did the scrub along the creek and river banks reduce the area that could be grazed, but the trees often fell into the creek and made snags ... and that’s just messy! So for over a hundred years, native vegetation was removed from the landscape and creeks were de-snagged of dead wood. The consequences should have been obvious in retrospect, but let’s not forget that the guys who undertook this herculean task, were often first generation settlers who were new to the rhythms of this landscape and the monsoonal downpours that can turn bare hillsides into custard. Massive erosion occurred across the landscape, crystal clear rocky creeks became silted bogs, big rivers became creeks, native fish populations collapsed as resources and habitat dwindled. hills dried out as soils became shallower, floods increased as water moved across the land quicker and creeks dried up sooner as their catchments dried out. These changes often happened subtly over a few generations and the community memory of what has changed is often quickly lost.

Planting trees on creek banks can help turn back the tide of ecological degradation. yes, there may be some initial erosion in the short term as we switch from pasture back to forest cover, but within five-to-ten years the roots of trees such as Figs (Ficus spp.) and lillypilly’s (Syzygium spp.) will provide deep long-term protection for creek banks. The shade that these trees provide cools the water and reduces algal blooms. The fallen trees, branches, leaves and fruit provide the habitat for native fish and other animals such as the platypus. The water that flows through these forested creeks provides cleaner water for dams and for us! A good example of creek bank rehabilitation is the obi-obi boardwalk in Maleny, twenty five years ago this was an area full of weeds, erosion and rubbish. I was fortunate enough to be involved in this project from its very early stages and have witnessed the changes along this stretch of creek. I remember planting a Deciduous Fig (Ficus superb) on a steep collapsing bend (rather optimistically – I thought at the time) about 20 years ago and can now go back and see a beautiful tree holding the creek bank firmly together. This area is a great testament to the community spirit of Maleny and our ability to heal the landscape when we work together.

tiled mosaic, or perhaps chiselled into a suitably indestructible piece of timber. It depends on parental skill and the child’s involvement, but it doesn’t matter so long as the name is there and lasting. Children love to show “their” tree to friends and relatives. Barung’s Porters lane nursery in north Maleny has an excellent range of species to suit acreage or a small garden. Bee, butterfly and bird attracting plants are all there. The current plant list is on the website and although due to demand not all plants listed will be available, there are plenty from which to choose. Backhousia myrtifolia, Cinnamon Myrtle, is a popular flowering shrub as is Leptospermum polygalifolium, Wild May. Both shrubs lend themselves to pruning should that be necessary or desirable, depending Hibbertia vestita

on your garden style and available space. Cinnamon Myrtle can grow moderately tall if it needs to reach for the light, but otherwise is a medium shrub. Callistemon salignus, White Bottlebrush, and Stenocarpus sinuatus, Firewheel Tree, are much loved by birds when in flower. Micromelum minutum, lime Berry, is a small tree and butterfly host plant. Another option is a flower garden. longlived low shrubs with bright flowers are Hibbertia vestita, Guinea Flower, Artanema fimbriatum, koala Bells, with pink or purplish flowers loved by Blue-Banded Bees, and Scaevola albida, Fan Flower. koala Bells are small self-seeding herbaceous plants best cut back regularly to encourage flowering throughout the warmer months. They die down in winter when they can be cut right back. Spring brings fresh stems. A living gift is a lasting gift, so give a plant this Christmas.

The

Principal Questions Our Sunshine Coast Hinterland schools are pretty special, and we have been running a monthly article finding out more about the person at the helm. This month it’s Principal Ruth Machen, from Eudlo State School.

1. Are you and your family from this area? I grew up and have spent most of my life living in Gladstone. now I live with my husband, Richard, in Glenview. We really enjoy living on the coast and most of our children all live in the south east corner of Queensland, so I get to catch up with them regularly.

Principal, Ruth Machen, with students outside Eudlo State School

2. What do you do on your days off? I like to play golf on the weekends and I am a member of the Beerwah Golf Club. I have played softball and hockey throughout my life and this year I coached an amazing group of ladies in the Flinders hockey Club.

It sounds cliché but honestly, no child is left behind at Eudlo. The school offers individual attention and the staff are really caring and approachable.

3. How long have you been in a Principal position? I have been principal at Eudlo SS for three years and prior to that have worked as Principal at Widgee SS and out west at Bauhinia SS.

6. What are your plans for the next year for the school? The school is really focusing on improving literacy skills in 2019 and providing engaging lessons. Students are very interested in technology and recently produced a school movie using drones to film.

4. Why did you choose to become an educator? A family friend, Judy Aitkenhead, encouraged me to go into teaching as she saw how much I enjoyed coaching and leading sporting teams. Even now, at 78 years of age, Judy volunteers her time to help others. She is an educator that I really admire. 5. What are the strengths of the school community? Eudlo is inclusive and caring and it’s so close to everything. I like to call it small but mighty. The school is very well resourced and is set in a lush rain forest. The whole Eudlo community really is fantastic.

7. What is the most rewarding part of your job? What job in the world do you get to go to work each day and be greeted so enthusiastically by so many? Teaching happy children and getting to know their wonderful personalities and families is very rewarding. I honestly enjoy going to work every single day. 8. What has been the most valuable lesson you have learnt along the way? I like to tell the students that making mistakes is okay and that we all learn from each other.

9. Did a teacher or principal inspire you when you were a student? no, not really. I got on quite well with all of my teachers and principals during my schooling years. Back in my school days (the dark ages) we had large class sizes, thus it was difficult to develop relationships with the teachers as they were too busy trying to teach. 10. lEVEn yEARS AGo I used a cherry picker to prune a large hedge of weeping lilly pilly, Waterhousia floribunda, at Flaxton, just past the French restaurant, and recently the new owners engaged us to do it again. This time period can be indicative of the interval required between pruning of large trees in a built environment, and causes me once again to be humbled by, and marvel at, the longevity of these organisms. There are specimens in Sydney botanic gardens that were planted in 1827, making them nearly 200 years old, with trunk diameters of 1.1 metres.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work on such a largescale operation, with such beautiful living things. It feels like we are creating one of those huge outdoor

Follow ‘aboutthattree’ on Instagram, & Tony Wootton Tree Surgeon on Facebook art installations. This hedge was pruned to roughly 12 metres high, is about 150 metres long and is comprised of 72 trees. The pruning operation generated 80 cubic metres of mulch. This is a great example of what people with resources and a love of trees and horticulture can create in this amazing slice of heaven we call the Maleny Plateau. The trees here grow so big so quickly, that with the right approach you can create something that is truly breath-taking, that will bring pleasure to many generations of humans to come.

Treaty now y OU COULD BE forgiven for missing it, but something quite important happened in politics last week. Under all the relentless antagonism, the cacophony of Bill Shorten’s thunderous denunciations of Scott Morrison’s muppet government and our marketeer prime minister shouting about how well he was doing in the job before fleeing to South America, there was the glimmer of bipartisanship over an issue that actually matters.

The joint parliamentary committee on an indigenous voice in parliament – the key recommendation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart rejected summarily by Malcolm Turnbull and then by Morrison – reported that the idea should be progressed and refined with a view to running a referendum aimed at enshrining it in the constitution in the next parliament. True, there was not total consensus; the Greens Rachel Siewert wants to move to the referendum as soon as possible and sort out the mechanics later, and the LNP’s Amanda Stoker thinks there should be regional voices, rather than a national one. But the point is that the proposal is alive and well – there have been no walkouts and dummy-spits, of the kind our last two prime ministers so disgracefully inflicted on indigenous Australians. And the second best option – a voice based on legislation, but not protected by the constitution – has been effectively dismissed as patronage and window dressing. Furthermore, the idea of a truth commission, leading eventually to a treaty, is still very much on the table. The report is a tribute to its chairman, the indefatigable and irreplaceable Pat Dodson, but also to all the other members, especially the Liberals’ Julian Leeser, who effectively defied the contemptuous vetos promulgated by Turnbull and Morrison when they deliberately misrepresented the Voice as a third chamber of parliament – it is, as has pointed out by anyone who can read, nothing of the kind. It is a well researched and conservative formula which could and should be endorsed by any politician of goodwill, and we can be profoundly grateful that there are a few still in the parliament to reassure the public that the system may be damaged, but it is not entirely broken. Genuine reform is still possible. It has been a long time coming – my first contact with the idea of a makarrata – a coming together after conflict for reconciliation and friendship – came when the great public servant “Nugget” Coombs began campaigning for it nearly 50 years ago. Since then there have been highs and lows, moments of hope and times of despair. But some of us have kept the flame alive, and it may be, finally, that it has kindled enough fire in the torpid bellies of our politicians to ignite genuine progress. It will not happen before the next election of course; Morrison’s muppets and the especially the far right (who will insist that they are not racists, but…) believe that there are no votes in Aboriginals, so what’s the point. But it appears that Shorten, if he comes to office, has been persuaded that constitutional recognition for indigenous Australians is a more pressing priority than the republic, and if there is to be only one referendum in his first term, the one agreed to by the members of the committee and the Referendum Council comprised of both indigenous and nonindigenous experts. But as the stalwart Marcia Langton has pointed out, it should not be too hard: the Uluru Statement from the Heart effectively said it all. And for the record, here it is:

HINTERLAND TIMES – DECEMBER 2018

We, gathered at the 2017 National Constitutional Convention, coming from all points of the southern sky, make this statement from the heart: Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes were the first sovereign Nations of the Australian continent and its adjacent islands, and possessed it under our own laws and customs. This our ancestors did, according to the reckoning of our culture, from the Creation, according to the common law from ‘time immemorial’, and according to science more than 60,000 years ago. This sovereignty is a spiritual notion: the ancestral tie between the land, or ‘mother nature’, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were born therefrom, remain attached thereto, and must one day return thither to be united with our ancestors. This link is the basis of the ownership of the soil, or better, of sovereignty. It has never been ceded or extinguished, and co-exists with the sovereignty of the Crown. How could it be otherwise? That peoples possessed a land for sixty millennia and this sacred link disappears from world history in merely the last two hundred years? With substantive constitutional change and structural reform, we believe this ancient sovereignty can shine through as a fuller expression of Australia’s nationhood. Proportionally, we are the most incarcerated people on the planet. We are not an innately criminal people. Our children are aliened from their families at unprecedented rates. This cannot be because we have no love for them. And our youth languish in detention in obscene numbers. They should be our hope for the future. These dimensions of our crisis tell plainly the structural nature of our problem. This is the torment of our powerlessness. We seek constitutional reforms to empower our people and take a rightful place in our own country. When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country. We call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution. Makarrata is the culmination of our agenda: the coming together after a struggle. It captures our aspirations for a fair and truthful relationship with the people of Australia and a better future for our children based on justice and self- determination. We seek a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making between governments and First Nations and truth-telling about our history. In 1967 we were counted, in 2017 we seek to be heard. We leave base camp and start our trek across this vast country. We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.

NEW NOT-FOR-PROFIT group has been created in Maleny, called Studio23 Maleny. Coordinator, Kris FitzGerald, recently shared the details with HT. “Studio23 is a centre for empowering people with diverse abilities to socialise, work, create and learn,” she said. “Our aim is to provide courses for people with a disability and disadvantaged people in our community.” Studio23 is centrally located at the Deck Room, Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street, Maleny. “We have started with a music course on Tuesdays and plan to gradually expand to four or five days a week,” Kris explained. “On Tuesdays, we have five members, plus two community members joining in for a day of music,

socialisation and learning. Our two teachers, Craig Cole and Melanie McVie, are expert disability support workers and teachers.” Further courses will include art, social enterprise, photography, craft, and social days. “The social enterprise side of the centre will empower our members to join in with the community to make products to sell at a market day every month,” shared Kris. “This is teaching them how to produce, market, and sell their products leading to more independence in their lives.” On December 11, Studio23 we will be holding their first community consultation day where everyone is invited to visit. There will also be a presentation by Parent2Parent called 'Staying Safe'- Freedom from Abuse and Neglect.

Studio23 is a place to express yourself!

“This presentation teaches people about all different types of abuse from financial, neglect, emotional, physical and sexual. “It was developed by a Melbourne based group called VALID and is beautifully presented, with videos made with actors with a disability. It is essential for all people in our community to understand and be able to advocate for themselves in difficult circumstances.” Studio23 is an important and valuable addition to Maleny, so take a look on December 11, contact Kris for more information on 0404791763 or studio23maleny@gmail.com.

SPRING/SUMMER 2018

Festive Greetings

Rain didn’t deter more than 4500 visitors in town for Nambour’s inaugural Street Art Festival in early October. Congratulations to Lorraine Taylor and her hard working committee for an outstanding event that added 16 new murals, by eight talented artists, to Nambour’s existing street art. All the new works are now in place, boosting artworks along the Street Art Trail to 32, with more to come as the event grows in 2019 and beyond. Grab a copy of the 2018 Nambour Street Art Trail map and your phone for some selfies #nambourstreetart and hit the trail.

Note from the Mayor Sunshine Coast Council’s international broadband submarine cable project will be a real winner for our Sunshine Coast community. In recent months, we have made major steps forward with this project which will transform our region and benefit the broader Queensland community. I’m excited about the many opportunities that will flow from the cable which should be in service by mid-2020. The fastest data and telecommunications transmission from Australia to Asia will happen from here on the Sunshine Coast. This will help encourage local businesses to expand, new businesses to establish and new career opportunities to open up for people in the workforce now and for future generations. Council has begun working with local businesses to raise awareness of the opportunities associated with the cable and what they should be considering to enable their business to grow. This project reinforces our vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative. Mayor Mark Jamieson

Dulong past and present Discover local history at Dulong Lookout, the most picture perfect spot in the Nambour hinterland. Dulong is part of the traditional homelands of the Kabi Kabi people. In the early days of settlement it was known as Doolong, the name of the selection chosen by John Murtagh. ‘Doolong Jack’, as John was known, was the district’s first recorded settler and associated with every district advancement. He served on the Maroochy Divisional Board, was the official Census Collector, the Postmaster and chairman of the Dulong Provisional School. The sign features photos from SCC Heritage Library and private collections, and the location boasts one of the best views of the Coast.

ETIREMENT LIVING, eco-retreat and travel business Live Life Group has recommitted to be naming rights sponsor for the Maleny PGA Legends ProAm tournament, following its recent purchase of Clouds of Montville and Montville Day Spa. The tournament, being held at Maleny’s picturesque course on Saturday December 15, has an increased pro prize purse of $15,000, while amateurs could win a $16,000 car from Pacific Ford by scoring a hole-in-one. Tee times start at 7am and 12.30pm. More than 60 tour regulars have entered, including defending title holder Colin Hunt,

and current Order of Merit Leaders Tim Elliott, Brad Burns and Mike Harwood. Club President Dr Max Whitten said the committee was excited to be teaming up again with Live Life Group to bring the Legends Tour back to the Hinterland. “We received terrific feedback last year from all the players, the PGA and our sponsors and it’s very encouraging to attract the continuing support of all

involved to help us cement this tournament as a premier annual fixture on the region’s golfing and event calendar,” he said. Clouds of Montville manager Greg Guilford welcomed the opportunity to partner with Maleny Golf Club again following the Live Life Group’s recent Montville expansion. December is Decembeard

®

for Bowel Cancer Australia

B

EARDS AREN'T just for hipsters, grandpas, men that ride motorbikes or people that are too lazy to shave. Beards are for anyone keen to take action and make real change happen for the increasing number of Australians affected by bowel cancer. One in 11 Australian men will develop bowel cancer in their lifetime. Bowel cancer affects men of all ages and risk increases every year from age 50. Around 55% of all Australians diagnosed with bowel cancer are men. In its early stages bowel cancer often has no obvious symptoms; however, any of the following may be suggestive of bowel cancer: l

Persistent change in bowel habit (looser more diarrhoea-like bowel movements, constipation, or smaller more frequent bowel movements)

l

Change in appearance of bowel movements

l

Blood in the bowel movement or rectal bleeding

l

Unexplained tiredness, weakness or weight loss

l

Abdominal pain, especially if severe

l

A lump or pain in the rectum or anus

Not everyone who experiences these symptoms has bowel cancer. Other medical conditions, some foods and certain medicines can also cause these changes. Bowel Cancer Australia recommends participating in screening appropriate to your personal level of risk. For people at average risk of bowel cancer, medical guidelines recommend screening using a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) every two years from age 50. However, if you have one relative diagnosed with bowel cancer at age 55 years or older, screening should be considered every two years from age 45.

The term macular degeneration (AMD) has become common in the consulting room as the new eye disease almost as well known as cataracts and glaucoma.

Mapleton Medical Centre

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness. The macula is the central part of the retina and gives us the ability to see fine details e.g. reading. Our whole quality of life is intimately linked to the macula as vision is undoubtedly our most valued sense and contributes most to how we interact with the world.

ESTABLISHED IN 1981. WE PROVIDE A FULL RANGE OF GENERAL PRACTICE CARE FOR PATIENTS OF ALL AGES. An introduction to Dr Monga who recently joined our team

AMD is essentially age-related changes to the macula which results in difficulty reading small print and seeing clearly when driving even with spectacles. Sometimes the objects can be twisted and lines distorted. It is a progressive condition, sometimes quickly but mostly slowly chipping away at best vision, leading to difficulty recognizing faces, watching TV, reading the local newspaper. Because progression is slow, most people with AMD don’t realize they have a problem until functional problems surface. Under most circumstances, AMD is detected by an optometrist or eye specialist. AMD can be treated but not cured. Treatments can be as simple as dietary supplements and healthy diet. Other treatments for more advanced AMD are more invasive and performed by an eye specialist. Scheduling regular eye examinations if you are over 50 is a smart move. Early detection of AMD is important for effective management and treatment.

Finding happiness at Christmas

A

S WE MOVE into the Christmas holiday season we are encouraged to indulge and celebrate the end of another year. Wendy Rosenfeldt We wish people a merry Christmas and a happy new year, but does our way of celebrating assure that this will be achieved? Does the mad rush of buying presents, attending end-ofyear functions and consuming too much food and alcohol, actually bring us happiness? Feeling stressed by expectations of buying suitable gifts, juggling family arrangements and over indulging can see us wishing for the Christmas festivities to be over and done with. As we breathe a sigh of relief on Boxing Day, do we feel fulfilled or do we start looking for the next promise of happiness, retail therapy in the Boxing Day sales or more partying on New Year’s Eve? We may know that happiness comes from within, but how much time do we spend cultivating our inner well-being. Recipe for happiness at Christmas Structure some time out for yourself. While December is a great month to catch up with friends and attend Christmas parties, it is important to spend time by yourself, reflect on your year and take time to rest and recharge. Eat, drink and be merry. Moderation of the first two will ensure you feel the later when you wake up the next day. Feeling bloated and tired after overeating, or seedy from too much alcohol, is not a recipe for merriment. The Ayurvedic dosha theory understands that the increase in hot weather in summer is responsible for the increased heat in our minds

and bodies during this season. Too much heat, identified as excess Pitta, can make us feel irritable and impatient, experience more skin related problems and burning sensations in our bodies. Pitta is aggravated by alcohol, sour, spicy or acidic foods and pushing yourself. Exercising or working in the hot sun will also increase Pitta. Pitta is balanced by sweet, juicy fruit such as watermelon and mangoes, eating cooling food such as cucumbers and leafy greens, swimming in cool water, taking time out and spending time in nature. Exchanging the garish Christmas lights of the shopping centre for the soothing beauty of nature will bring down the intensity of Pitta’s heat. Keep up your exercise routine. Include walking, swimming or games of cricket into your Christmas festivities. Exercise will help to lift your mood so you will be better able to cope with whatever it is that pushes your buttons; from the increased traffic as everyone heads off on holiday or to Christmas functions to challenging family get togethers. Exercise also increases your digestion, so you can enjoy the festive treats without feeling like you have to lie down for the rest of the day. Meditation and yoga may not traditionally be seen as Christmas activities, but including them in your hectic schedule can ensure you stay balanced and centered throughout December and feel ready to start the year ahead. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a teacher of Transcendental Meditation and a Maharishi Ayurvedic health practitioner. To attend a free introductory talk on TM or book an Ayurveda consultation call 5499 9580/ 0438 507 188.

Season’s greetings to all

W

ELL THE YEAR has flown by, and now it’s time for a little breather. Much like being caught in a revolving door which finally stops, and you step back out into a different space and try to gather your thoughts and feelings to experience life a little differently for a while. Most of the year we are on auto and to do this efficiently we often have to disconnect from our real feelings and needs and just get on with the practical routine of timetables and the like. We all know Christmas is a time of gathering with our loved ones or perhaps just with those we feel obligated to reconnect with. We give gifts and often incur extra expenses that we don’t really need, when what is most welcome is the gift of our presence not our presents. The most bountiful celebration pales in what is experienced when peaceful, loving, joyful, grateful hearts come together to just relax and share love. Beyond all the fun and festivities, and I think they are great, wouldn't it also be amazing if we took a moment to just light a candle, to give thanks to the one Great Life that links us all so profoundly and spent a few minutes in silence hugging our loved ones, thanking them for being a wonderful part of our lives.

How amazing it would be if the food on our table was chosen for its health-giving properties not just for the sensation of taste. What a difference it would make to those experiencing hardship if we wisely contributed the value of just one gift to make someone’s life easier. The world is huge, our experiences are varied, yet science teaches us that we are all in resonance on a frequency level with each other, let’s not forget those who cannot help themselves, the gift we give would generate within us the chemistry of healing that comes with knowing we have lived and loved with great awareness. Pause during December, reflect, give thanks. You don’t even need to make a new year’s list that you’ll not look at anyway; silence and peaceful moments will write on your heart what it is that would most bring you lasting joy. Thank you all for being a part of my life this year and I wish all the best for you and your loved ones. Marisa Kliese is a Clinical Member Aust. CCORDING TO THE Australian Physiotherapy Association, we need to keep up our exercise as we age to keep our balance and mobility as effective as possible.

‡ Â’Â”Â‘Â˜Â‹Â†Â‡ÇŁ y y y y y y y y

The brain plays a crucial role in balance and mobility - planning movements, as well as receiving information from the body senses, such as vision. The brain then sends messages to the muscles on how to respond to this information in order to achieve safe and successful balance and mobility. The vestibular system located in the inner ear is also important for balance. Mobility also requires good cardiovascular (heart and circulation) and respiratory (lungs and breathing) function to ensure enough oxygen is getting to the muscles for them to work.

ÇŁ ‘Â?ÇŚ ”‹ Č‹ ƒ– „› ƒ’’‘‹Â?–Â?‡Â?Â–ČŒǤ ˜‡Â?‹Â?‰ ƒ’’‘‹Â?–Â?‡Â?–• ƒ˜ƒ‹Žƒ„Ž‡Ǥ

As your balance and mobility relies on so many body systems, a range of health conditions can affect them. Shakiness when walking or turning, or having falls or near-falls, are indications that your balance and mobility are not as good as they should be. If this is happening, you should have an assessment by your GP or physiotherapist. As balance and mobility problems can have many different causes, your physiotherapist can assess you to design an exercise program suited to your needs. Many physiotherapy practices, community health centres or hospital-based physiotherapy departments offer group classes specifically designed to improve your balance.
