EBRUARY, ALREADY! I made no resolutions in January. No point really - until the kids are back at school, any food/fitness/me-time ideas are out the window! But no more procrastination, time to pep myself up (with something other than tea and a Danish pastry).

The HT has plenty to pep readers up this month: inspirational women with cookbooks, puppets, and humanitarian kindness; hunting for ‘scar trees’ across the hinterland; markets with delectable offerings; fundraising high teas; star-gazing; community events and live music.

The Australian Film Festival will certainly engage and entertain those lucky enough to grab tickets. The best in Australian film, both features and shorts, are on offer over three days, thanks to the Maleny Film Society.

For book lovers, Outspoken is back with the first conversation event of the year, featuring author, journalist and political commentator Dr Anne Summers, and author Melissa Fagan.

The Community News and In Brief pages bring suggestions to keep you busy, from Milkin’ It’s gumboot throwing, to motorcycle swaps, to a Stop Adani singalong!

I’m only sorry (and a bit frustrated) that I didn’t have room for more editorial and all the photos I received.

I have personally been ‘pepped up’ by your communication, dear readers. I am thrilled at the response to the poetry page. Every week I am reading new work and it is so hard to choose which to publish in the space I have.

Letters-wise, there is a growing debate once again around Mungo MacCallum… do you love him, or would you like another opinion piece alongside Mungo’s each month? If so, please make a suggestion, or step forward yourself, we would love to hear from you.

I hope you enjoy your February HT, I’ve certainly liked putting it together and having some great conversations with community groups and locals along the way. This really is the best job, thanks to you!

HE MALENY FILM Society (MFS) is, quite simply, wonderful! Not only do they bring quality films from across the world to the hinterland, they also celebrate Australian filmmaking each year, by holding the Australian Film Festival.

The MFS committee members are excited to share news about the weekend of films, documentaries and events in store for those who attend. This is your advance notice, so buy your tickets before they all go!

On Friday March 8, join the launch party from 6pm, catered by Spaghetti Junction (everyone starts booking now), and enjoy a glass of bubbly before kicking things off with a comedy short, Your Call Is Important To Us. This is followed by Jirga, a feature-length drama set in Afghanistan.

Saturday, March 9 begins at 1pm with the feature documentary, Backtrack Boys. “This documentary received a standing ovation at the Heart of Gold Film Festival,” said Paula Phillips, MFS festival manager.

“It also received the Audience Award at the Sydney, Melbourne and Canada Film Festivals, which is outstanding.”

The documentary is about Bernie Shakeshaft, who reduced the crime rate by 60% in the Armidale area, after introducing a program where young men became involved with his dog-jumping team.

“We will have members of the Backtrack Boys program here, with their dogs, joining us for afternoon tea in the Festival Hub, so filmgoers can meet them.”

At 3.30pm there will be a free panel session, where thoughts and opinions will be shared on two ways of telling a story through film, by special guests including Director Alena Lodkina, whose film Strange Colours will be showing in the evening.

“After drinks at 4.30pm with the panellists, there will be three shorts to enjoy, which were all favourites at the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival,” Paula shared.

A break for some sustenance follows, courtesy of Sukhothai Bowl, where you can collect your preordered, take-away meal before heading back inside for a short, uplifting film set in Tokyo.

And finally, Alena Lodkina will speak about her film, Strange Colours, set in Lightning Ridge, where opals are mined, before the film itself is shown. Alena was recently hailed as a major new talent at the Venice International Film Festival.

Sunday starts with tea and coffee before two feature films and a workshop in-between.

“It’s a chance for patrons to discuss and share thoughts, a tradition we have, over a morning tea,” said Andrew Wallace, MFS vice president and artistic director of the festival.

“This year we want to push a little deeper into film appreciation, with an activity for small groups to take part in.”

The Maleny Film Society has been running for over 27 years, currently with almost 400 members, and celebrations like this only highlight how special it is.

“We’ve been told it’s one of the bigger film societies in Australia,” Andrew said.

“You cannot find these films just anywhere,” added Paula, “That’s what makes the society so valuable, access to good Australian film.”

Lou Walsh is a warm and familiar figure for many children at Maleny State School where she has been a teacher for almost 30 years, but it is her work as a refugee advocate over the last nine years that many would know nothing about.

RIMMING WITH GIFTED mementos from the Middle East, Lou Walsh’s welcoming home overlooks an orchard of pomegranates, planted by a friend seeking asylum while he waited anxiously for his visa approval. This is not a new scenario for Lou, who has been opening her home and her heart to those who are making a new start in Australia for nearly a decade.

“Being an advocate for someone is very rewarding. I have been lucky enough to host several families for weekends here at my home. There is so much warmth and laughter and there is always food. I have eaten some amazing food, cooked by my friends,” she explained.

“One of those weekends was spent building an outdoor pizza oven which will always be a great reminder of good times.”

“Helping someone deal with government departments when they come from a non-English-speaking background can be quite daunting and frustrating. You have to be patient with your friend and the bureaucrats,” Lou mused.

Lou’s own children have been inspired by their mother’s example and are planning to work in areas relating to Human Rights law, and Lou is justly proud of them.

A consistent proponent for positive connections and friendships across communities and cultures, Lou is known for her collaboration in the Harmony Day Choir, where children from the different local schools come together to sing songs of friendship and peace for the community.

It is therefore no surprise that music has played a special role in Lou’s time as an advocate for people seeking asylum and refugees. Indeed her first introduction to advocacy was when she joined the group of musicians called The Scattered People and travelled to Pinkenba Transit Centre to visit people in detention, to share songs and music.

Sugarmill Road which had original music and songs based on poetry written by people in detention,” explained Lou. The first group Lou became involved with were families, mainly from Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, who were fleeing violence and upheaval in their own countries.

Over the following year most were released to live in the community and The Scattered People followed, setting up in a local community centre to continue to offer support. Many of these same people are now treasured friends.

During this time the centre at Pinkenba had become home to a group of men

aged between 18 to 80, who were seeking asylum after being moved from Christmas Island. The depressing nature of isolation and detention made it much harder to interact, as these men slept throughout the days.

The Scattered People found themselves coming along to the centre at night when the men were awake to play and share music. Gradually the men came to participate and enjoy the music, sharing songs from their own cultures and, importantly, in their own language.

Lou has expanded her advocacy work by joining the Welcome to Maleny (W2M) group which meets once a month at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

The W2M group supports people seeking asylum and refugees by holding vigils, opening conversations about the issues faced by refugees in detention in Australia and bringing refugees from Brisbane up to Maleny for special welcome days.

They seek to provide a unique experience outside of the normal daily routine. These welcome days include sharing food, stories and music and visiting sites, such as Mary Cairncross Park.

“Bringing people together is important, because what binds us – families, friendships, food – are greater than what divides us. The differences are not so great. We like to laugh at the same things,” Lou explains.

The next Welcome to Maleny Day is planned for February or March 2019, and will be announced in the Hinterland Times.

“With the current political climate, people seeking asylum and refugees are facing discrimination, but they have a will to keep going that I truly admire. They want the opportunity to contribute to this new country.”

“Some of the most rewarding experiences I have had is attending citizenship ceremonies and witnessing the joy of finally being accepted as an Australian,” Lou said proudly.

Although working with people in this area has its difficulties with language and cultural barriers, Lou is

adamant that her experiences have been enriching.

“Anyone wishing to support these people should get in touch with Multicultural Development Australia (MDA) or Neighbourhood Centres. Buddies on the Sunshine Coast and Welcome to Maleny are always happy to include new members.

“It is a great experience for the whole family to make genuine friendships and learn about other cultures,” Lou said.

“It can be hard work and sometimes involves a lot of time.

Some people need a tremendous amount of help with paperwork. However, I believe I have received far more than I’ve given in terms of love and friendship,” Lou concluded with a smile.

OCAL AUTHOR AND farmer Amanda Smyth loves nothing more than to bring expertise from farmers to the general public, and she does this through her blog, in a humorous and delicious way.

“Being farmers and meeting lots of local primary producers, like ourselves, has given me the opportunity to be in the know and it is a unique kind of thing to share when you learn something cool and new,” said Amanda, who shares what she learns about on her popular blog, Cooker and a Looker.

The pages of her blog are full of delicious recipes, tips and interviews, such as a strawberry farmer who helps you grow the best berries, or an interview with a retired expert butcher from the land that makes the best pork crackling recipe.

Cooker and a Looker, that she refers to as ‘home cooking served with a side of farm life’ has become a hit right across Australia.

The quirky name of the blog name shows Amanda’s great sense of humour, and she came up with it thanks to her husband’s wedding speech, where he told the wedding party that as a young man his footy coach has told him, “You either get a looker or a cooker, you can’t have both.”

Then he declared his coach was wrong because he had indeed found and now married Amanda who definitely was, “A cooker and a looker.”

Thanks to the popularity of her blog, Amanda has been an awards finalist and had experiences cooking on stage at the Good Food and Wine Festival, and speaking at the Barkley’s Women’s Day. Writing a blog has also helped her make a difference too, “I did a post about organ donation that went viral. It just ended up everywhere all over the internet and republished on all these websites,” Amanda shared.

Organ donation is something close to Amanda’s heart and something she says all families need to talk about.

“It is really important to have a conversation about it,” she said, “obviously you have to be careful about how you approach it and be sensitive to the children’s ages, but you can talk about the concept and your approach about it with them.”

And blogging isn’t just for your readers, it means a lot to the blogger themselves as Amanda has found over the years.

“Small crop farmers are always chasing a season and battling the weather, you are tied to your farm for irrigation and other factors, it can be quite isolating. We have the most amazing lifestyle, but blogging has added an extra layer for me personally.

“Through it I have also met some really interesting people and done some things that I never would have got to do without it.”

It even led to a cookbook! Amanda’s beautiful cookbook, published in 2017, is also called Cooker and a Looker and contains 76 recipes and over 300 pages.

It was a great deal of love and hard work in the making, but her readers enjoy it; especially the farm stories that connect to the recipes and add a little something special.

A highlight for Amanda since her cookbook came out was that her favourite chef, Julie Goodwin from MasterChef fame, left her cookbook a positive review online.

“There may have been some squealing,” Amanda

laughed. “She is my favourite MasterChef. She won with a fish pie!

“I loved that Julie made really relatable food, especially as now a lot of MasterChef is more aspirational food, not what you feed the family every night and things that don’t make you sweat when you are entertaining. Things that are still impressive, but you are also able to enjoy entertaining at the same time.

“I made sure I put a section in the book called ‘Things you wished you had asked Mum before you moved out’. Handy things, like how to make jam or how to cook a crab.” And many of her readers tell her this is one of their favourite parts of the book.

Daughters, Lillian and Harriet, are a chip off the block as well, with young Harriet, eight, already cooking and planning to take over her mum’s blog one day.

“There are things like bliss balls that I can put her in charge of. I supervise that she is safely using things like the blender, but she does the whole thing, which is really cool.”

It is also a special time for the mother and daughter, “They are more open I think, and they tell you things you would not have found out in the car on the way home from school when you are cooking together.”

But, it hasn’t been all sunny days for the hard-working mum and farmer. A couple of years ago Amanda was given the shock diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, and Amanda had to decide whether or not to share her diagnosis and story...

Did you know there are messages and signs in the trees? Rebecca Mugridge met Kerry Neil and went on a discovery of scar trees - living, ancient relics of our past and an important part of local culture and heritage.

Credit reporting concerns the recording of an individual’s credit worthiness and notes information about a person’s identity, any loan applications made, when the individual or a lender accessed the information and information about defaults. The credit reporting regime is regulated by the Commonwealth Privacy Act and the Credit Reporting Code of Conduct and can be done by any corporation. In Australia Veda Advantage (previously Baycorp Advantage Ltd.) and Dunn & Bradstreet are two major credit reporting corporations.

When an individual makes a loan application the lender would most likely seek to access that individual’s credit report as part of the loan approval process. This access is noted on the individual’s file as well information about the name of the lender and the amount applied for. However the credit report does not record the success or otherwise of the individual’s credit application nor will the Privacy Act allow the recording of any other personal information such as political affiliations, religious beliefs, criminal history, medical history and sexual preferences.

Default information able to be noted on the credit report concerns situations where a payment has been outstanding for more than 60 days, whether an individual is bankrupt, when a cheque for more than $100 has been dishonoured twice and when, in the opinion of the lender, the individual has committed a serious credit infringement such as acting fraudulently.

So how can you access a copy of your credit report? This can be done by simply contacting the credit reporting agency and requesting that a copy be made available. If a charge is requested for a copy of the report a complaint can be made to the Privacy Commissioner.

What if inaccurate information is noted on a person’s credit report? The first step should be to contact the lender who listed the inaccurate information and ask that the listing be removed or amended within a reasonable time. 24 hours may not be an unreasonable timeframe where the error means that another lender would refuse a loan and therefore possibly risk a contract being terminated. If the lender refuses to amend the error then the next port of call would be to write a complaint to the credit reporting agency and request that they investigate the complaint.

The credit reporting agency would then be obliged to put a notation next to the error noting that the matter is under investigation. The final step, should the credit agency not correct the error once the investigations have been carried out, is to formally apply to the Privacy Commissioner for the error to be investigated.

Trees tell the tale

SCAR TREE IS a remarkable, living piece of historic art. A tree marked by Aboriginal people and a rich part of our history in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Kerry Neil, Director of Goombuckar Creations, CoFounder of Triballink and local Gubi Gubi/Kabi Kabi man is passionate about scar trees in our region.

“They mark special, special places such as springs and waterfalls and ceremonial grounds. So, when you see one, they really are important,” said Kerry.

“Scar trees have been a part of us, our people, for 1000’s of years, some of the trees are 400 -700 years old and that is a connection to that place that is 70O years old. And then you start seeing carvings on rocks that are 25,000 years old, it’s amazing the history we have in the area.”

Traditionally, scar trees, also known as carved trees were used as markers to indicate a place of significance like a water source or to help guide in a direction. The scar on the tree was carved out of the bark and the removed part was then used to make equipment.

Mapleton, where he teaches with Tribalink, are so impressive they immediately immerse you in fascination of our local history.

Amongst his artefacts are tools used to carve scar trees and an impressive collection of shields. As Kerry talks about each piece you really start to understand just how rich our local history is.

Scar trees are a historic part of the culture in the area, “They were used as signposting to mark the roads and trails and getting from place to place but also for shield making and canoe making, bowls, utensils and all kinds of stuff,” said Kerry.

The iconic trees, found across Australia, have a very strong presence in our Sunshine Coast Hinterland and importance to the area.

Jamie Hazelden, The Australian Bushman TV personality, has seen some incredible scar trees across his travels and even has an impressive double one on his property in Mount Mellum.

Jamie is dedicated to bringing local culture into his work and features scar trees on one of his DVDs about the region, Exploring Hidden Secrets of the Sunshine Coast where Kerry guest stars and shows Jamie an impressive scar tree people can then go and find and visit in Mapleton.

HOW TO CHECK IF THE AGENT IS REALLY ON YOUR SIDE Real estate agents often have trouble remembering who actually pays them when they sell a property.

Ask a few simple questions to do with how long the property has been for sale, why they are selling and how negotiable they are.

for things like canoe making, especially up north. Many in our area were very important signposts, from the scout den in Landsborough to the Bunya Mountains walking path and they are all the way along the path,” he said.

QCCC owner and co-founder of Triballink Andrew Grant said, “We already think the area is remarkable, but the scar trees just confirm it. Scar trees mark places of great significance, beauty or importance.

“When you come across a scar tree it pays to stop and have a look around, because you know for centuries it has held importance.”

Through Triballink, young kids are learning about scar trees and much more, “They learn to value the cultural heritage and it is an exercise in reconciliation. We want kids understanding the importance of culture.”

While continuing traditions in Aboriginal culture can see whole new generations of scar trees being created, these ancient relics, many that even predate invasion/settlement will sadly, eventually all be lost.

Threats to scar trees include old age but also man-made land clearing, development and even being accidentally chopped down for firewood. Many people may not even be aware that they have one on their property and they can be accidentally removed when land clearing occurs.

Something even more devastating than the loss of one of these great trees by accident is also the potential loss of a special place, or artefacts that the tree was a signpost for.

“We need to showcase them, as a collective it is going to benefit our whole region,” he said.

Kerry’s knowledge and passion for scar trees is infectious and soon had me looking at older trees and forests in a whole new light. You may now find yourself keeping your eyes open for potential scar trees everywhere you go.

C

ONVENTION IS NOT a doctrine that Rebecca Dostal follows. Born to a native Bohemian father and English mother, her childhood in the Blue Mountains was a collage of experiences that few could comprehend. Bohemian artistry ran in her blood and her lifestyle was eclectic, surrounded by her antique dealer parents, musicians and artists.

Her father’s deeds during WWII, when he escaped from both the German Army and then Communism, were miraculous. Her grandmother had been a silent movie actress in the 1920s and the famed Australian artist, Norman Lindsay, was her adopted grandfather. Adding to the mystique, Rebecca swears the house they lived in was haunted.

Then, whilst playing in the bush in 1970, Rebecca aged six and her sister aged eight, found the dead body of Vicki Barton, one of Australia’s most high-profile child murder victims.

The discovery catapulted the family unwittingly into the jaws of the media, introducing them to a stream of TV and newspaper reporters. It also connected the family to famous people like Mike Willesee and John Laws.

The foundations of Rebecca’s artistic side had been laid for a creative life with many twists and turns.

“I started with a fashion degree and after working in the fashion industry, which I found to be soul destroying because of the working conditions for machinists, I left and made a range of different lines, from children’s clothing, hats and then wedding dresses until I started making my own leather range of collectable Celestial Dragons in 1994,” explains Rebecca.

“When I moved to the Sunshine Coast I studied writing and drama at Sunshine Coast University. So I’m a performer as well now but I still have to make something, so… you put the two together and you make something to perform with.”

“The puppets bring so much joy to the world,” says Rebecca. “They are the mouth to the soul of someone else, and they inspire people to find their imagination.”

Rebecca’s extensive collection of puppets ranges from hand puppets to the full body-sized Ruby and Beryl. All have personalities as diverse as the United Nations and all are hand made by Rebecca, a professional dress-maker and milliner.

Apparently I’m not the only one to be mesmerised by Ruby coming to life. “When we were at Woodford Folk Festival and Bill Hauritz and Bob Hawke stopped to interact with Ruby and Bazena Troll, both grinning from ear to ear, it proved to me what joy my puppets can bring,” says Rebecca.

Rebecca’s dream is to keep exploring puppet making and puppeteering and go to Prague, her father’s home town, to study traditional Marionette making.

“I would like to share this traditional method here on the Sunshine Coast.”

A resident of Maleny for 18 years, Rebecca holds puppet making workshops from her studio, The Puppetarium, and one day soon, would dearly love to have her own touring puppetry troupe on the Sunshine Coast.

When that happens, I have no doubt it will be a welcome addition to the already burgeoning Sunshine Coast Arts scene, and I, for one, can’t wait to see it.

Several of the roving characters are celebrities in their own right, having performed at Woodford Folk Festival, Horizon Festival, Anywhere Festival, The Old Ambo and the Imagineers Festival.

But the puppet performances are not simply lighthearted fun for children. Rebecca also uses her puppets to help people in high-care or with severe disabilities.

“I’ve been using puppetry for social change. Puppets can be used to tell stories or address issues that are not easily brought to public attention. For instance, the girls (Ruby and Beryl) have a play about death. They are actually dead.”

Called Dying to Meet You, the play is about demystifying death and dying.

“Beryl has just died and Ruby helps her transition into the afterlife, figure out what on earth has gone wrong…

slaps her on the wrist for not having an advanced health directive and also sends her back to help her family find the will ’cause she’s hidden it in the drill box in the tool shed.”

Performances like this have been staged at Anywhere Festival and at Ignite Conference as part of Dying to Know Day. Other similar educational puppetry projects have been aligned with Supporting People in Respite and Lifestyle (SPIRAL) and Rebecca hopes to take her puppets into public schools in 2019.

Rebecca has been fortunate enough to learn from one of the masters in the industry – Mike Quinn of Jim Henson Muppet Studios. “I’ve been studying puppet making and puppeteering online for four years and will continue to do so.”

When it comes to making a puppet, Rebecca has no preordained concept of the character she is about to create. As she did when she worked in fashion, she selects a piece of fabric and builds on that, deciding which features work well with the texture and colours and which embellishments will enhance the puppet’s personality.

“Something magic happens when the puppet comes alive,” Rebecca says, demonstrating by picking up Ruby, gliding her hand into a secret recess and standing the glamour gal before me.

Maleny’s Milkin’ It for Charity

n BeHalF OF the Maleny neighbourhood Centre (MnC) there will be a delicious high tea on March 7 to celebrate Women’s day, held at The Orangery in Maleny. The special guest speaker will be Caroline Hutchinson from 92.7 Mix FM. This year’s topic is Balance for Better, and there is no better partner than MnC to exemplify this message.

The Maleny neighbourhood Centre has a clear vision of being a welcoming, multifunctional community space in the heart of Maleny, providing opportunities for community connection and wellbeing for young people, families and the broader community - along with the support of local organisations and agencies.

MnC needs to raise $100,000 plus per year to keep the doors of the centre open. While some of this money comes from room hire, the rest is generated from membership, fundraising and donations. This is where community support is very important.

So, let’s fill 100 seats on Women’s day, raising funds for this important and nurturing organisation!

He SunSHIne COaST branch of the Historical Motorcycle Club of Queensland will hold their annual Motorcycle Swap Meet at the Maleny Showgrounds on March 9, from 6am for sellers/vendors and then at 7am for buyers and the general public. The swap will trade all day until 6pm.

The club encourages the restoration and maintenance of classic, historic, vintage and veteran motorcycles. Club activities include social rides, show and shines and exhibitions which the general public can enjoy while they remember machines from the past. a club motorcycle must be 30 years old, and members have bikes ranging back to 1912 and everything in between.

The club raises and donates money to charities and boasts it very own food court with a wide variety of tasty food. The Maleny lions Club is a regular main food provider using the event as a major fundraiser.

I know dee lister sent you a bundle of poems from we Poetry Trail Poets, and I know Judy Bandidt was also thrilled to find herself in print in the same edition.

aM WrITIng about one of the regular contributors to your excellent paper, Mungo MacCallum. I have read his monthly contribution on and off for many years now. With an election looming, I thought I would have a close read of his latest effort.

Mungo’s first comments are about Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s church, where Mr. Morrison and his family have worshiped for the last ten years; in fact, Mr. Morrison met his wife there when they were young. all good, you might think, but no, Mungo says that Mr. Morrison worships ostentatiously. someone’s religious belief. after some comments about the PM versus Bill Shorten, which are quite reasonable, Mungo launches in to dividend imputation; he says: Shorten will….remove tax refunds from those who didn’t pay the tax in the first place.

This comment displays a lack of understanding about how dividend imputation works. In 1987 the then Treasurer Paul Keating introduced dividend imputation, designed to prevent owners of australian shares that paid a dividend having to pay tax twice.

However, the Howard government introduced a proviso that shareholders who paid no income tax (e.g. super funds) could still get the ‘franked dividend’ as a tax credit.

There is no good reason for this, and although I am presently a beneficiary, I agree with the Shorten proposal.

Mungo then calls dividend imputation a lurk! that mainly benefits the rich. (I wonder what Paul Keating would think of that). Well, wealthier people are probably going to be paying some income tax on their assets, so the credit should still apply to them, as in the Shorten proposal.

I would like to suggest if you are still keen on Mungo, perhaps give him half a page and get another writer with a different viewpoint on the other half page?

The Bunya Range this place was called when Tom Petrie came to see the festival of many tribes called to the Bunya tree.

They came from many days below and many moons ahead, intent to find the bunya nut laid on the forest bed.

The harvest waited patiently as the cones matured and grew, and, with their falling, tribes were called and friendships made anew.

No longer enemies, they came and shared the peace-filled fruit; marriage agreed, deep things thought out to which all contribute.

aBC foreign correspondent liam Cochrane travelled to the scene as this dramatic rescue unfolded. 12 young members of a soccer club were trapped inside a cave after a sudden monsoonal downpour flooded their exit. Cochrane used his local knowledge, liaison with a team of Thai researchers and his observations, to describe the agonising wait for all, as the officials planned the rescue.

The Cave is an inspirational story of an amazing group of these young boys, and the rescue effort with international participation of divers from australia, england, Thailand, Scandinavia, Canada, China…

Cochrane also details the phenomenal involvement of locals who produced 20,000 meals a day for the duration of the rescue effort.

Two of those involved share the 2019 australian of the year award: long-time diving companions richard Harris, an anaesthetist and Craig Challen, a retired vet.

nTHuSIaSTIC HOrSe rIderS are looking forward to a fun and challenging year with Sunshine Coast area Trail and endurance riders Inc. This well-established club (now over 26 years old) was originally formed by endurance riders to help train their horses with Competitive Trail rides (CTr). Over the years the club has adapted the calendar to holding monthly walk-only trail rides as well as the well-known CTrs together with a navigation ride.

SCaTer is the only active CTr club in australia with the main competition involving a horse and rider following a marked trail, completing ten judge point obstacles along the way and returning to base without incurring time penalties for being too fast or too slow. The additional benefit being beautiful scenery out in the bush and through forestry.

The judge point obstacles may be simple yet also challenging, and both horse and rider can obtain a maximum of 25 points each at every judge point. However, no one has yet reached the optimum score of 500 – to date 496 has been the highest.

The challenges are varied, for example picking up a raincoat out of a tree, opening and shutting a gate, side passing over a log, backing around a tree, walk, trotting and cantering at set points just to name a few. any type of horse can be used and if riders are inexperienced or nervous, they can ride in a team or training division.

The first event for 2019 will be a Meet ‘n’ greet Walk Only ride on February 17 at ewen Maddock, Mooloolah. This will be a three-hour ride on good shady tracks. riders are asked to arrive by 8.30am for a ride out at 9am.

Members are $10 and non-members $30 which includes the necessary day insurance and lunch. The flyer is on the website, scater.com.au, with rSVP February 14.

The popular Judge Point day will be held at Palmwoods on March 3 where riders will have the opportunity to practise and learn how to perform different judge points and challenges in preparation for CTrs. Check out the SCaTer website for more information.

Maleny Lane recently hosted the first of a monthly full band, live music night. The Renegade Funk Band will feature a revolving combo of local artists playing purely improvised music which will draw from their diverse backgrounds in jazz, soul, reggae, afrobeat and funk.

The idea came after an impromptu jam session at Maleny Lane late last year when it was clear that Maleny is ready to welcome back a family-friendly live music night onto Maple Street.

Each gig will kick off with an open mic for some young emerging artists from 5pm, first Friday of the month; come early if you’re keen to be involved. Maleny Lane is BYO and features a wide variety of international eats.

Conversations is a new concept, with events to be held on the first Monday of each month.

The idea behind Conversations is to have local speakers come and speak about their life, experience, and topics of interest. (The first guest speaker was pioneer antarctic surveyor Sydney ‘Syd’ Kirkby.)

This monthly event is designed to bring the Blackall range community together and share the talent, skills, and experience of locals.

S I WrITe THIS, I rejoice that the Bunya cones are falling (in fact they’ve been falling for the last few weeks). I don’t rejoice so much that the nuts are falling, but more that they are landing and available to harvest! you certainly don’t want to be under them when they are falling or for that matter waiting to catch them as they weigh up to 10kg!

The Bunya tree (Araucaria bidwillii) is one of the truly ancient members of our local forests. They hark back to the age of dinosaurs and were once widespread across the australian and are part of the araucariaceae family, that still survive across many of the southern land masses and include Hoop Pines, norfolk Pines and Monkey Puzzle Pine.

These days Bunya Pine occurs naturally in one tiny patch of north Queensland and more locally as scattered populations between the Sunshine Coast and Kingaroy (Bunya Mountains). not only are these trees ancient, but quite exclusive about where they live – so we are lucky to share their neighbourhood with them!

Bunya Trees are a Blackall range icon and easy to grow.

The starchy Bunya nut sends a root deep into the ground where it forms a thick tap root (like a radish) from which the tree shoots. They are a little bit slow to start off with

but once they get going can grow a metre or two per year and can be fruiting at 12-15 years - just don’t plant them near your garage, shed, water tank, house, etc. for what I hope are obvious reasons…

These delicious nuts are a great bonus to our diet. The simplest way to cook Bunya nuts is to boil for twenty minutes, then let them cool down enough to handle. The husk on each individual nut is quite tough and requires a sharp knife and an equally sharp operator.

Once you get the knack, you’ll get a taste for Bunya that’s hard to keep up with your cutting abilities. (Instead of a knife we use a polypipe cutter which for a few dollars is a great investment in preparing Bunya – highly recommended.)

Before I wrap up, I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Bunya Country and these trees that they have farmed and managed for millennia. The Bunya Pine was and still is an important part of traditional owners’ culture and we are lucky to have had this knowledge shared with us - thank you. eating Bunyas is best with family and friends, a communal activity in which we can connect with and share the bounty of this land.

possibly fairly wet. a time to undertake tasks in the shade and further develop plans for the revegetation and the garden. The difference in temperature under trees is very noticeable; plant trees, not lawns in this climate!

We do have predominantly summer rainfall, so planting is generally undertaken as we move towards autumn.

The soil moisture has been replenished and the risk to young plants from high temperatures has largely gone.

When possible, it’s worth preparing planting holes in advance. Cover them with mulch and allow the soil structure to improve underneath. This works very well for those on heavy soils with a high clay content.

When you can plant, first give your tubestock a thorough soaking in water to thoroughly hydrate the root system. Once planted, water in well, mulch and leave them to it.

Most of us are on tank water and supplementary watering is not usually required. Well prepared soil, mulch and about 10 litres of water per plant should be enough to get them started.

In the meantime, Melicope elleryana, euodia or Pink doughwood, is flowering and attracting the lorikeets, Buckinghamia celsissima, Ivory Curl Tree, is about to flower on the range and already in full flower down at landsborough. It’s a native of north Queensland but a popular street and garden tree. It can grow quite large.

The various honeyeaters have been busy flitting between banksias and sporadically flowering bottlebrushes.

Has anyone noticed “new’” visitors? It’s quite possible that with our changing climate birds are moving down from the north or escaping the dry conditions out west. Observing and recording change is always worthwhile.

Congratulations to Mikki doonan, Maleny High School’s 2018 captain, who won the club section of Zonta International’s young Women in Public affairs (yWPa) award.

Seeing stars in Maleny Brisbane astronomical Society will continue to hold public stargazing viewing nights at Maleny golf Club in 2019. HaVe THe utmost respect for one of my clients, who, in the late 1990’s established a rainforest plot on a few acres of bare ground in otherwise semi-suburban Flaxton.

In the ensuing years she has shown remarkable diligence and persistence to ensure the integrity of this diverse endemic stand of trees. The Blue Quandongs, eleaocarpus angustifolius, are 30 metres tall now, and full canopy closure was achieved long ago.

She is 86 now, so it shows me that someone can be well into their 60’s, and with a bit of land, and this incredibly lush growing environment

that we are blessed to live in, create their own slice of paradise before their very eyes, and help restore this land to its former splendour.

I became involved with the site some years ago when one of the large Bumpy ash trees fell over on the neighbours’ house. I know, Ouch, right? So now every year or so I

inspect the plot and determine the best way to maintain the trees safely and keep them beautiful. There have been no further incidents.

The last thing we did was to prune the tops off the Quandongs, and remove a large Qld Maple, Flindersia brayleana, and it was such a pleasure to climb through the canopy with my young friend and colleague, Jackson.

It was the first time I’ve ever been aloft with another human, and to watch him flourish and grow into a competent climbing arborist has brought me the greatest pleasure.

OalITIOn In neW year BOunCe, screamed The Australian ecstatically. Well, not all that much of a bounce – the latest newspoll showed that the government’s position had improved from catastrophic to merely awful.

But that was enough for Scott Morrison, who bounced out of the silly season rebounding, cannoning, ricocheting and caroming all over the place. and, like all good bouncers, his immediate instinct was to beat the crap out of those regarded as undesirable, meaning, of course, Bill Shorten.

Shorten would drag the economy backwards, he warned; recession could not be ruled out. There were head winds and storm clouds ahead in the united States, in China, in europe – just about everywhere except in the utopian land of Oz, in which he and his team (or what is left of it) will keep the good times rolling for all eternity. and just to make the point he splashed lots of money around Queensland and offered more handouts for small

business, a strategy which has not impressed voters in the past.

But as every good marketeer knows, the point of advertising is to persuade people to pay for stuff they neither need nor want, and if persuasion does not work the first time, just keep hammering the message until the victims submit.

But wait, there’s more – 1.25 million new jobs in the next five years. It sounds like a big number but in fact it will only hold the line, keeping unemployment at its current level. and despite the initial ballyhoo, even if they eventuate, not all those jobs will be full time, exacerbating the problem of underemployment and doing nothing at all for wage growth. and then the set of steak knives – a promise (!?) to get rid of the national debt in ten years. This, of course, is an aspiration rather than a commitment – and given that the debt level has grown considerably during the five years since Tony abbott warned of the debt and deficit emergency under labor, a fairly unconvincing one.

But the trouble with Morrison’s big spiel is the inherent contradiction at its very foundation. If Morrison is correct – and for once, the vast majority of experts are on his side – there are indeed serious risks emerging in the international economy. admittedly there is not much australia can do about it; the big players, donald Trump, xi Jinping, angela Merkel, emmanuel Macron and even Theresa May might have some influence over events, but Morrison has practically none.

His role will have to be reactive, and the obvious – the only rational – approach would be the precautionary one. australia is looking towards a small and probably temporary budget surplus with very little protection if the shit hits the fan.

So, as the respected deloitte boss, Chris richardson, pointed out last week, Morrison has a straightforward choice. He can squirrel away the resources he has – principally the windfall revenue from increased commodity prices, which are unlikely to last all that long, or he can spend it in an effort to buy himself an election. In stark terms, he can look after the national interest, or pursue his own. and no prizes for guessing which ScoMo will choose: the pork barrels are already being unpacked and there is no sign that the largesse will be limited.

The reverse in fact; as things stand (or fall) 2019 will be the biggest spend since 2008, when Kevin rudd was trying to hold back the global Financial Crisis, a real emergency when there was a real threat to real jobs and a real risk of a real recession.

If Morrison’s current scare campaign actually came to fruition, there would be very little ammunition left for Treasury to resist. But don’t you worry about that; long term policy – or indeed any serious policy – can wait.

What matters is the immediate future, the next three and a half months and, on this schedule, Morrison is quite unequivocal: there is only one imperative, and that is to destroy Bill Shorten.

Or, as Morrison prefers to put it, “it will be a very honest campaign, and I’m not going to shy away from that. I’m not going to sugar-coat the risk of Bill Shorten and labor to the economy, but I’m not going to overclaim it. I’m going to talk to people pretty bluntly about what is coming.” and right on cue the Minister for energy (or at least fossil fuels) angus Taylor explained that labor’s target of 45 per cent renewable energy would shut down the cities of gladstone and Mackay. a double reprise of the Whyalla wipeout – two crazy scare campaigns for the price of one.

Well, at least there was no sugar-coating.

But the big scares – the sledgehammers, the wrecking balls – will come from what Morrison and his excitable Treasurer Josh Frydenberg insist in calling labor’s $200 billion tax grab, which will impoverish homeowners, renters, retirees, pensioners – you name them, labor will impoverish them.

But apart from the obvious overclaiming, Morrison must know that the majority of the proposed changes would not be new taxes, but the removal of concessions granted overwhelmingly to the rich – what others might describe as perks, scams and rorts. Morrison presents them as entitlements, almost god-given rights. and it need hardly be added that they come at a hefty cost to revenue, and thus add significantly to the dangers if and when the storm clouds and head winds start looming.

Shorten will spend the extra revenue predominantly on schools and hospitals, so the immediate fiscal outcome will not alter.

But the priorities will, and this is what the election will really be about. If neither side is committed to economic rectitude, the argument becomes which promises are the more desirable.

Morrison insists that the coalition’s record of economic management is superior and that he will prevail. But every day the evidence gets thinner. The polls may not be the only thing that is bouncing. Morrison’s and Frydenberg’s cheques are looking a bit rubbery too.

How much do you drink? a

reCenT analySIS in the Medical Journal of australia showed an increase in the number of australians over the age of 50 who drink five or more standard drinks on a single occasion at least once a month.

Older australians are vulnerable to alcohol‐related adverse effects, such as falls, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental health problems, obesity, liver disease, dementia and brain injury. guidelines recommend no more than two standard drinks on any day. There are a few tips to reduce your alcohol intake, including: ● Set limits for yourself and stick to them ● Start with non-alcoholic drinks and alternate with alcoholic drinks ● drink slowly ● Try drinks with a lower alcohol content ● eat before or while you are drinking ● If you participate in rounds of drinks, include nonalcoholic drinks

If you drink for a reason, for example because of low mood or anxiety, talk to your doctor about better solutions.

The Queensland alcohol and drug Information Service (1800 177 833) provides free anonymous 24/7 phone counselling and information for people with concerns about their own or someone else’s use of alcohol.

People who drink less, or nothing, are less stressed and have a few extra dollars in the bank.

The day/ night cycle of activity and rest, the Wendy Rosenfeldt weekly cycle of having time off on the weekend, for women the monthly menstrual cycle that actually helps to purify the physiology of impurities and the yearly cycle of taking time out over Christmas and new year.

We are made aware of the important function of these cycles most if we don’t get the opportunity to have them. Working all night or not getting a day off in weeks can leave us feeling depleted not just physically but mentally drained. Feeling inspired to start the new year off with resolutions to live a better life is due to having taken time away from the daily busyness of life.

How long we remain committed to them is usually determined by how long we can remain rested and energised after our holiday. as the fatigue creeps back in, so do our bad habits or inability to maintain our new diet or exercise program. unless we are very disciplined and push through our mind and bodies complaints, our resolve tends to weaken as the year goes on.

Transcendental Meditation is the best way to foolproof your new year’s resolutions. For 20 minutes twice a day you experience a profound state of rest up to twice as deep as deep sleep. This enlivens the brain and rejuvenates the body. during TM there is an increase in eeg coherence, increased blood flow to the brain and more coherence between the right

and left hemispheres. eeg coherence is found to be naturally high in people that are at the top of their field. Olympic athletes, successful musicians and CeOs of companies generally have higher levels of eeg coherence. eeg coherence measures how well all the parts of the brain are working together. One of the outcomes of high levels of eeg coherence is that the individual has the ability to focus sharply on the details while still maintaining the bigger picture.

This is vital to managing a company or playing in an orchestra but can also come in handy juggling the day to day activities of family, work and life. don’t despair if you think your brain activity does not fall into this category exhibited by high achievers. It has been shown that the regular experience of transcending can give you higher levels of eeg coherence than people that were naturally born with it.

Stanway writes that women who have oestrogen dependent breast cancer tend to have low melatonin levels as do men with testosterone dependent prostate cancer. research is showing that for men and women balanced levels of testosterone and oestrogen protect against many cancers and play a significant role in maintaining healthy sexual relationships and also conception.

Healthy melatonin levels also promote restful sleep and can help us to maintain resilience and balanced mood levels.

It would however be wise to pick a suitable time for sun exposure as I notice that we all tend to burn much more easily

these days and the sunlight is very, very strong so that looking at the sunrise or sunset is not always as possible as it used to be a few years ago.

Stress is a factor affecting many of us more and more, anxiety is something that children as well as adults are now experiencing. apart from the obvious benefits that going outside into nature gives us is that outside we tend to move the eyes in a broader range of movement.

Through the brain stimulation this movement creates we can have great shifts in our mood levels. notice how much of our day we are looking down or straight ahead and not up and the brain needs all the eye positions for balance to be maintained. always look for simple ways to build health on all levels rather than reaching for a pill or even a vitamin. Water the garden without strain I

T’S alMOST SPrIng, and a great time to get in the garden! Many of us love to tend to our plants. In our area, water restrictions may be so severe that using a hose to keep the garden alive is a thing of the past. you may be forced to take other measures to preserve your precious plants, but they come with hidden dangers.

Watering garden beds and plants using a bucket or watering can is a great way to establish and maintain plants and reduce water wastage. But while buckets and watering cans are efficient, cheap, and easy to use, they have the potential to cause injury if you lift or carry them incorrectly.

Wrist, shoulder and back pain is more likely when carrying heavy buckets and watering cans, and lifting awkward loads. Warming up with a few stretches can make a difference, and it’s worth stretching a bit more when you’re done.

Here are some timely tips to minimise the risk of injury when lugging litres of water around to help keep both your garden and your body really healthy:

● Try lifting two lighter buckets rather than one heavy bucket, so the load is distributed equally on each side of the body. Tip: use twolitre milk bottles for watering. ● always carry buckets and pour water as close to your body as possible. Holding any weight away from your body increases the stress on your upper body and back. ● Place the bucket on a raised platform to fill it so you don’t have to lift it as far. Tip: try a stool or chair. ● Make all movements smooth. avoid jerking or twisting.

How things have changed, none more so than a device that is gaining in usage in optometry over the last decade, namely OCT. OCT, an ocular coherence tomography to be pedantic is basically an equivalent of ultrasound used in medicine. It allows to take a scan of the eye and make a definite diagnosis between a healthy or diseased eye, long before we could do that with our traditional tools, like a magnifying light focused on the back of the eye.

Glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes retinopathy are some of the conditions where we can see structural changes well before function visual loss takes place.

It is a very useful piece of equipment and while essential in ophthalmology, will become basic standard of care in optometry in the not too distance future.
