Well, what a month that was! There was a lot going on, and it was a pleasure to be a part of it. Seeing the world premiere of IAGO in the Montville Village Hall, as part of the Rangebow Festival, was a slightly surreal experience, knowing it will be deservedly advancing from that intimate space to larger venues in Sydney and Melbourne, and possibly New York.

I was also asked by musician Andrea Kirwin to take part in a Lip Sync Battle as part of the Horizon Festival Glambour event, at the Old Ambo in Nambour. Everyone involved dressed the part and let loose. (I chose the Debbie Harry/Blondie song Heart of Glass.) The cheers and laughter buoyed us all along, and afterwards we enjoyed two fantastic art exhibitions in the gallery spaces downstairs – it really is a great venue.

But, the highlight of my month was having coffee with cartoonist/artist/poet/social commentator Michael Leunig, in Maleny. What a gentle, unassuming, intelligent and amusing man he is. We have been printing his cartoons ever since I became editor of the HT, so it was very special to finally meet him.

I have come down to earth now, after all this, and can calmly say September has plenty of good stuff in store for you, including a talented Sunny Coast husband-wife team bringing a new film/ music fusion to the hinterland, and cellist Louise King returning to Eudlo with her Long Listen festival program of eclectic musical performances.

We also have an edited version of Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night coming to Lind Lane Theatre, Nambour, with costumes and music inspired by the 1980s! It sounds like a refreshing adaptation for anyone who enjoys love triangles, revenge, passion and lots of laughter.

There’s much more, of course, but you’ll need to read the paper to find out. So, what are you waiting for? See you in October, when we’ll have the winner of the HT Young Writer of the Year announcement!

ENOUGH OF THE CONFUSION!

Debunking 10 Myths about the Voice to Parliament

The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation from First Nations people to all Australians, to walk together towards a better future.

Having a referendum on a First Nations Voice to Parliament is the first step on that walk; a chance to change the Constitution to enable First Nations people to be heard in matters that affect them.

It’s that simple.

Yet there are many myths and misconceptions muddying the waters, whether intentional or not. Here, we seek to debunk 10 of them.

Myth 1: It will amount to a third chamber of Parliament and therefore impact parliamentary sovereignty, a fundamental element of our constitutional system of government.

What is proposed is a Voice to Parliament, not a Voice in Parliament. It will have no role in passing legislation; that will continue to be left to our elected representatives in the House of Representatives and the Senate, as currently prescribed by the Constitution.

The proposed Constitutional amendment states that the Voice “may make representations” to Parliament. It will be up to Parliament to decide what it does with those representations.

Myth 2: It will be a lawyers’ picnic, and lead to lots of High Court challenges.

How Parliament responds (or does not respond) to any representations made by the Voice would be non-justiciable – that is, it could not be subject to any court challenge. This is because the courts have always been reluctant to interfere with the internal workings of Parliament.

Myth 3: It will not help to close the gap or have a positive impact on the lives of First Nations peoples.

The Voice will provide advice to the Parliament on proposed laws affecting First Nations peoples. Accordingly, Parliament will be better-informed about the impact of the proposed laws on First Nations peoples, and can amend where appropriate. A better-informed Parliament is likely to lead to better laws that will have a positive impact on First Nations lives.

Myth 4: It will give First Nations peoples special rights.

The Constitutional Expert Group comprising nine experts (including former High Court judge Kenneth Hayne)

and chaired by the Commonwealth Attorney-General has advised that a First Nations Voice will not give First Nations peoples special rights. All Australians have the right to make representations to Parliament, which is guaranteed by the constitutional Implied Freedom of Political Communication. The First Nations Voice is simply a permanent one.

Myth 5: Australians should be allowed to see all the proposed legislation establishing the Voice before voting in the referendum.

Length documents can lead to confusion, and there’s already a detailed report that sets out what a legislated Voice could look like – the Indigenous Voice Codesign Process Final Report.

The proposed constitutional amendment gives Parliament the power “to make laws with respect to the composition, powers, functions and procedures” of the Voice. It’s sufficient to have a detailed set of principles on which the Voice will be based. The Uluru Statement from the Heart website also contains a set of design principles.

Myth 6: There’s no need to enshrine the Voice in the Constitution.

By enshrining the Voice in the Constitution, it will not be able to be abolished at the whim of Parliament/the government, in contrast to ATSIC (and just about every other Indigenous advisory body set up by the government). It will also not be afraid to give frank and fearless advice. Its composition, powers and procedures will, however, be able to be amended by Parliament to ensure its effectiveness.

Myth 7: It will divide the nation.

The Voice to Parliament will unite the nation, because it will be a big step towards reconciliation. A successful referendum on the Voice to Parliament will mean the Australian people have emphatically said that we want Parliament to listen to First Nations people, thereby signalling that we have accepted the invitation in the Uluru Statement from the Heart to walk together for a better future.

Myth 8: Indigenous Australians are divided over the Voice, therefore it shouldn’t be supported.

Although there are some high-profile Indigenous Australians who do not at this point in time support the Voice (such as Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, Warren Mundine and Lidia Thorpe), a significant proportion of First Nations people do support the Voice. An IPSOS poll conducted in late January 2023 found that 80% of First Nations people support the Voice.

Myth 9: It offends the notion of equality that underpins the Constitution and our democracy.

Our Constitution does not protect equality, and actively allows for racially discriminatory laws by virtue of s 51 (xxvi) (the race power). Further, the race power has only ever been used to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, laws that are not required to be beneficial laws.

The structure of our Parliament is also not equal – the Constitution requires the Senate to have the same number of senators from each state (12). This means that Tasmania, with a population of approximately 571,500, has the same number of senators as Victoria, which has a population of 6,613,700.

Amending the Constitution to provide First Nations peoples with a Voice to Parliament does not offend notions of equality; rather, it is acknowledging the finding of the High Court in Mabo v Queensland (No. 2) that “Their dispossession underwrote the development of the nation”.  Myth 10: The history of referendums in Australia means that it is likely to fail.

The most successful referendum in Australia’s history of referendums was in relation to Aboriginal people (1967). More than 90% of Australians voted ‘yes’ to amending two sections of the Constitution to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples would be counted as part of the population, and that the Commonwealth would be able to make laws for them. This bodes well for a referendum on the Voice.

Also, social media has changed the landscape; times are different; polling shows approximately 90% of the first 2554 submissions to the Co-design Process were in favour of the Voice being constitutionally enshrined.

Nothing to be scared of

We encourage all Australians to read reliable research to make sure we’re well-informed about what the Voice is, and what it is not. Don’t get sucked in by myths like the 10 we’ve debunked above.

The Voice is nothing to be scared of. On the contrary, it’s something we should be proud of.

“Fetch & Feast” and the Future Entrepreneurs

Eager to work, but tired of not receiving so much as an acknowledgment to his job applications with businesses in Nambour, Palmwoods and Woombye, 14-year-old Jonah Brooks decided to take the matter into his own hands and start up a business, enlisting the help of his younger brother, 12-year-old Isaac.

onah and Isaac are no strangers to hard work. With their parents both being shift workers – mum is a nurse and dad is a policeman – the boys have to muck in with the housework at home, helping with the washing and cleaning, preparing meals for the family, looking after the pets, and getting themselves to and from school every morning and afternoon on the bus.

Both boys are typical lads of their ages – they love playing sport, while Jonah plans to study aviation to become a pilot when he leaves school, and Isaac wants to become a builder.

JAcknowledging that the boys are both “very athletic and sporty”, mum Sammy Taylor is keen to help her sons develop good social skills and savvy business ethics to carry them through life.

And so while Sammy and Jonah were visiting the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge at Sippy Downs one day, obtaining some assistance with their two recently adopted kittens, an unbelievable opportunity arose through a chance meeting with a generous benefactor.

“While me and mum were there, we came across the owner of the place that was giving away treats to the refuge to help with the dogs that needed to be adopted,” explains Jonah.

Isaac and Jonah Brooks with the family dog, Maya, and some of their own dog treats

Sammy picks up the conversation from Jonah, saying, “I got chatting to him, because I thought, what an amazing man; he’s come in with just boxes and boxes of all these dog treats for all these dogs that were obviously awaiting homes.”

In casual conversation, Sammy shared with the gentleman her frustration about Jonah not being able to pick up a part-time job, despite his enthusiasm and effort.

“So he offered the boys an opportunity to buy some of his products at wholesale price and maybe build their own business.

“I thought … this is such a great idea! So I sat down with the boys and said, is it something you would consider? Both were really excited about it. Before we made any decisions we went to his factory. We had a chat and a walk around and from there it’s kind of all just happened.

“Within the first week, Jonah had a name for it which was ‘Fetch & Feast’. From there he got Aunty Tara to help him with the business cards and the logo.

“It was kind of just meant to be … we were meant to be there on that day and we were meant to meet this gentleman. It’s pretty incredible.

“I think as a parent, you want their first job to be a really good job, to have a good experience in their first job. For me it was a no brainer. They can work around their school and their sport.

“They can make it what they want it to be. If they want it small, they can continue to have it small, if they want to make it bigger and expand as they get older they can.”

The benefactor, a former butcher with contacts to various meatworks, ethically sources his goods which generally comprise the offcuts of kangaroos, cows and pigs that otherwise would become waste. The scraps are cut to size then, without the use of additives, are dried in an air fryer before being packaged up and sent to supermarkets and other distributors.

Under the name of Fetch & Feast Brooks Brothers, Jonah has set up a Facebook business page so consumers can purchase the dog treats online, with the boys offering flexible delivery options. And without the massive overheads of the major supermarkets, the boys can offer the same healthy dog treats for a fraction of the price of their competitors.

Included in their range of treats are cow toenails stuffed with cooked mixed mince, which Jonah says is a bit “out there”, but is definitely a winner with dogs. For little dogs and those pooches that have gourmet tastes, there is chicken jerky, while the evergreen favourites like pigs’ ears and roos’ tails are also available.

It’s only been around four weeks since the boys began to set up their enterprise and already the treats with the Fetch & Feast logo are on the shelves of at least one local business.

Both boys are extremely grateful for the support given to them by the owners of the Eudlo General Store, where those who stop by for breakfast at their café with their fur baby can expect their four-legged friends to be spoilt with a Fetch & Feast treat.

If you would like to know more about Jonah and Isaac’s Fetch & Feast products, visit them on Facebook ‘Fetch.and.FestBB2023’ or send them an email: fetch_ and_feast@outlook.com

POWER OF ATTORNEYWHEN AND WHY IS IT NEEDED?

There can be a multitude of reasons why you will need someone else to ac t on your behalf - you may be travelling overseas where communic at ion is difficult or you m a y b e e x p e r i e n c i n g a s e r i o u s h e a l t h problem such as lengthy hospital stays or loss of mental capacity. This is where a Power of Attorney comes in. Sharon’sGlassie is full of good heer C

Her devotion to community (and her garden parties) garnered Sharon Schofield the Glassie Hall of Fame Award this year. HT writer Jacqui Hensel caught up with this ‘local legend’ recently, and enjoyed a lively conversation with this very worthy winner.

he Glasshouse Business awards, also known colloquially as the “Glassies,” are a special way for local people to show their appreciation for the small business owners and operators and their staff, who are the lifeblood of our communities.

Often overlooked, small businesses make up as much as 97% of businesses state-wide and employ 42% of private sector employees.

The Glassies have been a part of Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell’s way of recognising people in small businesses who go above and beyond for their communities.

According to Andrew, Sharon is a bit of a local legend around Maleny. “She’s the hinterland's most dedicated “Royalist” – forever, throwing garden parties to acknowledge the significant milestones of our monarchs.

T“But more than that, she has been the trusted face at Easton Lawyers for decades. And as such has won the coveted Silver Employee Award at our annual Glassies in 2016 and 2021.

“She has been nominated numerous times; so, it was only fitting that her devotion to the community was acknowledged with a Hall of Fame presentation at this year’s Awards Ceremony,” said Andrew with a smile.

Sharon began working for what was originally John Sheldon in 1990. When Tove took over the partnership in her own right in 2007, Sharon was an integral part of the business.

Now, she has been a part of the team for more than 30 years, and she looks back on her time as one where she has been privileged to be a part of people's lives.

“It has always been the team around me that keeps me motivated and engaged. Being an office of all women

with families, it’s the way we support each other and keep each other balanced.

“The Glassie Awards are very nice, it’s lovely to be acknowledged in this personal way, but I really rely on the rest of the team in the office,” Sharon was quick to explain. “Really this award is for all of us.”

In a time where the general trend is to ‘job-hop’ after a couple of years, I asked what made Sharon stay in one role for so many years.

“I have always gotten a great deal of satisfaction from my role. I love the interaction and knowing that at a difficult time in people’s lives, I am able to support them in a professional capacity while also

comparable to any firm on the Coast or in Brisbane, but with the personal warmth that comes from community connections. We know our clients and their families.

“I find there is a depth of knowledge you gain from being in a role for as long as I have. I note that I am a bit of a novelty these days,” Sharon chuckled.

“It’s really unusual to remain in a job for as long as I have, but I love it and even when I started my family it was still easy to want to come to the office.

“I believe that supporting each other as working women with families has been the key to, not just my satisfaction, but also that of the people I work with.”

Sharon explained that there has been much change in her industry, and technology has been both a blessing and a curse.

“We have had to change how we go about identifying our clients as there have been so many security scares and scams over the years. The scammers are getting more sophisticated and so we have to be extremely vigilant with documentation.”.

Sharon’s own daughter is quickly getting to the point where she has to make career decisions, and Sharon said she would like to remind all young people to be prepared that starting a job or degree can be quite hard.

“There is so much to learn. It’s so different from what you are used to with school. Being consistent and showing up and trying your best each day is all you can do. It will get easier, as everything else that is practiced does.

“Knowing yourself is also a key to unlocking your potential. We are so lucky to be able to follow our interests, these days.

“I started my job straight out of high school, which was the normal thing back then. Lucky for me I found the place I belong,” Sharon said with a laugh.

“The annual SOTE exhibition has expanded at Flaxton Gardens, to include workshops, immersive events, artist talks and more, all to be revealed shortly in the new program!”

Gretchen lives and breathes art – this much is obvious. “Imagine what change we would see in the world if we gave the arts the funding and acknowledgment it deserves,” she said as we settled in with a cup of tea.

Gretchen’s background reflects her constant passion to create, learn and connect, with a Master of Fine Art Production from La Universitat Politècnica de València, a BA in Design, a BSc in Anatomical Sciences, a B Bus in Marketing, a Certificate of Painting from the Julian Ashton Art School and a Masterclass from Shillington College,

How did all this begin? “I grew up in Palmwoods on farm in Winston Road,” said Gretchen.

“I entertained myself through creativity. Rocks, dirt, playdough, painting, I used it all. Even now I do the same with my kids. We recently made Origami jumping frogs from the remaining flyers from last year’s Sculpture on the Edge!

Logo needs to be bolder

I was invited to Gretchen’s home for our recent conversation: a cosy space filled with art, children’s paraphernalia and musical instruments (her partner is acclaimed Sunshine Coast musician Cory Carlyon).

Pls only slight edits / movign of informtion not of actual design..

“It’s getting quite hectic now,” Gretchen said.

“I would wake up as a small child and start drawing; then as a teenager I was making wearable art. It’s fun, and the reaction you can have is wonderful! My parents realised this was something I was into and encouraged me all the way.”

Gretchen has long believed in the healing and community power of art, and shared the story of her time in Ecuador, rescued by a family from a dangerous situation there.

“I thought, ‘how can I repay them for their kindness?’ I saw they had a church, where various kids were living. It was run down, with cracked windows and peeling beige paint. We painted it white, and covered the entire chapel with murals, including a giant tree.

“We also painted a beautiful seascape with stars, and the children said, ‘we love being here now’.

“You can transform someone’s entire world and how they feel about themselves with art,” said Gretchen.

Gretchen Keelty is a positive force of nature. Her enthusiasm and passion for art is infectious, and in her role as Sculpture on the Edge Festival Director, it’s clear the event is in good hands!

“I believe you can tell people something, but it doesn’t reach them in quite the same way as in their heart space through art.”

After years of travelling, learning, and creating, Gretchen returned to the Sunshine Coast and became a member of Arts Connect Inc.

“It is such a positive group of artists, encompassing the hinterland and the coast, with so many varied mediums, so many ideas and wonderful artist studio spaces to visit through the annual ‘Open Studios’ over ten days.

“To be able to meet art lovers, to share your thoughts about art, how you create, to hear what they love, to pique others’ interest, it’s invaluable. We really do ‘connect’ in the best way possible!”

Gretchen is keen for a collaborative approach for all artistic events across the region to build awareness, where everyone supports and highlights each other.

She’s right, we have an abundance of creativity here : Arts Connect, Sculpture on the Edge, Open Studios, the Australian Wearable Art Festival, the Rangebow festival, Knitfest, Horizon Festival, Kenilworth Arts Fest, Arts Alive, Woodford, the Butter Factory, Lind Lane Theatre, the Old Ambo, Maleny Players…

“There so many things happening that make this area the heart of the arts in South-East Queensland!” said Gretchen, with her trademark big smile.

Sculpture on the Edge, however, is Gretchen’s great passion for the moment. “I am staying up late almost every night working on this as there is so much to do, from applying for funding, to contacting artists, to arranging the social media. I have to be organised!

“I did some part-time military officer training from 1997-1999. There were many different things, like measuring the smile on your sock, tying your shoelaces outside over, where I thought at the time, what’s the point?

“But now I’m older and have had experience in marketing and organising events, I realise that if one thing is out of place, the whole thing can fall apart. Those little details can make a difference.

“We have five local councillors supporting us with funding and a Sunshine Coast Council Major Events grant, so far. They recognise that SOTE contribute to the community and the

economy, thanks to the thousands who visit Sculpture on the Edge.”

Gretchen is hoping for funding to bring live music to the event, and is also arranging children’s workshops for the weekends, satellite events, professional development workshops, masterclasses and art workshops, such as the ‘wax to bronze’ workshop.

“There will be something interesting and different every day. The artist talks are an important element for visitors, but they are also important for the artists’ own professional development.

“We will have Quiet Mondays, and Flaxton Gardens is wheelchair friendly. We want art to be accessible for everyone.”

Now in its 13th year, Sculpture on the Edge continues to evolve and exhibit a vast selection of artworks for all ages to enjoy. Running from November 23-December 10, artworks include indoor and outdoor sculptures, and the winning artist will be awarded the $10,000 first prize, generously donated by Flaxton Gardens.

There will be a small entry free to the exhibition this year, with ‘cheap Tuesdays’, concessions and school-age kids can visit for free.

“Art brings joy to the viewer, sparks imagination, and it’s healthy for the artist, and Sculpture on the Edge brings all this to Flaxton Gardens. We can’t wait to

showcase all the incredible art for everyone who comes along!”

Arts Connect Inc is a volunteer-run, membershipbased, not-for-profit group, and the generous support of the Sunshine Coast Council, sponsors and donors helps make SOTE possible. To find out more, visit: scultpureontheedge. com.au or artsconnectinc.com.au

How Blue-tiful!

Ninety-one-year-old Florence’s beautiful blue bouffant hairstyle is the flamboyant elegance that brings colour to Nambour charity shop Smiles, every Wednesday.

lorence’s beautiful trademark hair has its own iconic status in Nambour, she is a local face familiar to many as she walks around town with a dash of blue.

FAnd move about they did!

A beautiful person inside and out that has lived all over the Sunshine Coast during her 91 years thanks to her late husband, Ron, who liked to move a lot.

“My husband was a great one. Every few years he would want to move,” Florence smiles.

as a child, near the beach. We moved to a pawpaw farm in Palmwoods and I worked for Coles in Nambour until I fell pregnant with our daughter. We even lived in Noosa, we had a garage and a fruit shop and a fish shop in Noosa.”

Florence says when they first moved up from Sydney, Nambour was the place to be. “Gee, Nambour was great in those days,” she says fondly.

“Nambour and Currie Street especially were just wonderful. The main street had all these shops, it was lovely. When the cane went, it really made a difference to Nambour, a lot of country towns were the same.”

Her favourite business they owned was a shop in Yandina before the highway changed, called The Trading Post. “We had an antique shop in Yandina with a horse and cart out the front. I really liked that antique shop. I was always buying stuff and scraping it off and putting new colours on it or changing it.”

They were living in Colloolabin when Florence’s husband Ron was diagnosed with prostate cancer. “We had a lot of acreage and thought we better get something smaller now. We moved to Chancellor Park and built a house there, but after a while it wasn’t enough for him to do after farming and we moved to Woombye where we lived for seven years.”

When the property at Woombye became too much for them, they moved to Nambour.

“It’s great,” says Florence warmly of living in Nambour. “I didn’t think that at first,” she laughs, “it really grows on you. It really is a lovely place to live.”

Florence has lived in Nambour for 15 years now, she says she knows this as she gets a card every year telling her!

“I get a letter from Keyline Realty every year, letting me know. And he didn’t even sell us the house!” she says impressed.

“He must have been one of the agents we saw but he didn’t get the actual sale. It says, ‘Hello, Florence, this is your 15th year in your house’.” She smiles about this year’s card.

Florence thinks it is the most wonderful thing and an example of the Nambour community spirit. “I really appreciate them [the letters], they make me feel valued as a local.”

Florence lost her husband Ron a few years ago. “He was nearly ten years older than me. He would have been 100 this year. He was a great guy, very lovely. I miss him.”

Florence lives independently on her own at 91 and still drives a car and volunteers each week at Smiles Op Shop.

Smiles is the name Nambour locals affectionately give to the op shop that is now on Currie Street called Helping Children Smile Inc.

It supports an organisation based on the Sunshine Coast where volunteers provide reconstructive cleft lip and cleft palate surgery for Filipino children who without this help cannot access the surgery and treatments they need due to poverty and lack of the medical facilities and specialists they need.

“I look forward to Wednesday mornings and coming down and seeing the girls and seeing people. That’s important when you live on your own,” Florence shares about her weekly volunteering at Smiles.

Op shops, Florence adds, also are a fantastic option for your wardrobe.

“To tell you the truth, I think nearly all my clothes are from op shops. I think they are better quality than the new stuff.

“For me, I can buy beautiful clothes in the op shops and I do think it’s just good to do it too. You can always find things you like that suit you, and it’s just so cheap. People really should do it more.

“Nambour has some great op shops.”

And she isn’t alone in thinking Nambour is a great place to serendipitously discover some fantastic clothing and knick-knack wonders. Nambour even has its own op shop trail map. ‘Vintage and Retro’ trail map for Nambourvisitsunshinecoast.com/ guide/discover-namboursvintage-and-retro-trail

Beautifully blue haired and vibrant at 91, Florence says the secret to a long life is to live every moment without “living” in the problems that may also be there.

“Live as happy as you can, doing what you can.”

Year of Local – Meet the Producers

“Over the next 10-to-15 minutes whilst the drum continues to turn and adjustments are made to the heat and air-flow settings, the transformation takes place.

“Through the looking glass on the roaster you can observe that initially not much changes as the green coffee dries in the heat of the drum. But after about 5-7 minutes it starts to change colour from green towards brown and develops its flavour.

“When the temperature of the coffee beans gets close to 200 degrees Celsius the built-up pressure in the bean causes what is called ‘first crack’.

“If you pay close attention, you can hear this slight popping sound, which starts softly with a few beans and gains volume as more and more beans go through this transformation at the same time. This changes the structure of the bean and marks the final and most delicate phase of flavour development to takes place.

Born out of a family history of farming in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland for almost a century, the Barnett family started Montville Coffee in 2000 with the aim of learning about how business can be financially and environmentally sustainable while positively contributing to society.

As the first certified Fairtrade Organic coffee roaster in Queensland, Montville Coffee has continued to champion the benefits to the supply chain of supporting these third-party certifications. (The BCorp and 1% for the Planet certifications have been added more recently.)

Director Kevin Fraikin shared with us how a typical day passes at Montville Coffee.

“At our roastery we begin the day by having a coffee together and taking stock of the customer orders we have in the system.

“Green coffee from the warehouse silos is weighed in the loading trolley, sucked up into the loading hopper above the roaster.

“When the roasting drum has reached the target temperature the gate of the loading hopper opens up and the green coffee beans cascade into the hot roast drum, initially making the sound of rain on a tin roof. As the drum continues to fill with green coffee this sound fades out.

“The beans are then dropped out of the hot roasting drum into the cooling tray where a powerful fan cools down the beans and stops the roasting process. Once the beans are cooled down, they go through a destoning process for quality assurance purposes, after which they are ready to be packed and dispatched.”

Kevin added, “Over the years we have been very privileged to have the opportunity to travel with Fairtrade to some of the origins we purchase our coffees from, to first-hand observe the hard work, resilience, and dedication of the farming cooperatives in those countries.

“During our last visit to Papua New Guinea it was very humbling to have the opportunity to share our roasted single origin coffee from this region with the farmers of this cooperative. Even though they grow the coffee, they actually don't roast and drink it themselves. It was a wonderful moment to see them taste their coffee for the first time.

“The synergy and relationship with Maple Street Co-Op is something we truly cherish. From crop to cup, this long-standing collaboration resonates with our ethos of cultivating sustainable relationships, nurturing communities and crafting a positive future.”

You can buy Montville Coffee at Maple Street Co-op, and find it at many cafes across the hinterland.   Maple Street Co-op, 37 Maple St, Maleny, 4552. Ph: 07 5494 2088. Website: maplestreet.coop

end up here, although I reckon a few more plants and pics would cosy it up a bit. There is outdoor seating as well, to watch to the gentle meandering of locals along the street or kids playing in the park over the road – definitely no hustle and bustle here!

You order drinks and food at the counter, and we were welcomed with a smile. Our lunch came within ten minutes, and was made to order, so we would’ve been happy waiting longer if need be.

I had the Salmon and Potato Rosti with dill crème and poached egg, and my companion had the Cauliflower Falafel with herbed tahini and cauliflower tabouleh.

Mine came with ‘julienne’ slices of radish, and a sprinkling of chives, dill and coriander, and the presentation was like a work of art. As for the dill crème, I’ve not had one this good in living memory! Just the right creaminess and gentle dill flavour, which perfectly complemented the fish and egg, and the slightly salty rosti with its crunchy coating was the ‘comfort food’ base to make the whole dish work.

The Cauliflower Falafel was made from scratch and had the right mix of crunchy outer and warm, hearty centre, plus a fresh, green tabouleh bed of goodness, with the herb tahini adding another dimension to the flavours. It looked elegant and inviting, and was just the right portion size to keep you going until dinner!

Miller Sockhill Lawyers

This month for our Q&A profile we chat with Rachel Clutterbuck, Senior Associate and Head of Property for Miller Sockhill Lawyers, based in Maroochydore and helping clients from the coast to the hinterland.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up on the southern end of the coast in the Landsborough and Caloundra areas, attending both the local primary and high schools.

What made you choose to base your career on the Sunshine Coast?

Being a Sunshine Coast local, when I was presented with the opportunity to take a full-time position with Miller Sockhill, I jumped at the chance – coming up to seven years ago now!

It is such a privilege to be able to work and live on the Sunshine Coast, it is not something that I take for granted.

What does a 'typical' day entail for you?

My days usually involve meeting with and advising clients on their property transactions, document drafting, contract, and lease reviews, performing due diligence, negotiations, title examinations and property transfers.

Do you have any funny or fascinating stories/anecdotes to share?

There’s always room for unexpected creativity in property law – including some pretty unique clauses that have come across my desk, such as requiring a Seller to not take any steps to scare livestock or animals away from the property being sold. What is the most useful advice you could give someone looking for legal support?

Local expertise is extremely important, especially in property law. Look for a legal firm with a good reputation and strong involvement in the community.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love nature! My office space is currently referred to as the “greenhouse” and I am always in the garden, at the beach, or camping in my spare time.

Do you visit the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and if so, what do you enjoy the most about it?

The best part about visiting the hinterland is feeling the air change as you drive up the Range and then taking the time to explore the various national parks. I also love attending the many creative workshops and performances.

Do you have a favourite quote which inspires you?

“If you think you are too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent a night with a mosquito.”

meditation, 30 minutes of yoga, breakfast, then onto their various projects. They have also started community outreach by introducing a yoga class on Monday evenings at 5.30pm for anyone who wishes to join them.

Greg and Barb have experienced the highs and lows of life, embracing all that comes with raising children and nurturing grandchildren. They previously managed a local bed and breakfast for 18 months in the local area before purchasing On Obi.

“Greg and I had a vision to buy a property in Maleny to run yoga retreats and a place for people to get away from the rat race to relax, reset and find their mojo,” Barb shared.

“Focusing on wellness in a town that embraces creative ideas through active community engagement is encouraging,” Greg added.

“The existing accommodation has already been transformed from a restaurant and cabins to a holiday house and villas, so it seems appropriate to continue its transformation into a Wellness hub.”

“Our skills extend to yoga teaching and massage,” said Barb, “which is why we are passionate about living in a place where we can share these passions with others who choose to stay at our accommodation.”

A typical day for Barb and Greg begins with tea,

“We have a beautiful housekeeper (I call her my fairy godmother), so we can work on the business getting it ready for rebranding and marketing,” said Barb. “Greg has been very busy with setting up a firepit area, oiling decks and coordinating people to do jobs he can’t manage on his own.”

Guests have been delighted with the position close to town, and the cosy, clean and modern villas. “They also like that Barb and I have been available to help them with extra requests,” said Greg. The couple plan to offer packages that not only provide accommodation, but support events such as weddings, romantic getaways, and outdoor pursuits.

As for Barb and Greg, when they’re not working, Greg likes to play bass guitar in a rock band and Barb likes to read.

“We both love yoga, and walking. We love Mary Cairncross Reserve and McCarthy Lookout to check out the Glasshouse Mountains and pademelons, and we love the Maleny Trail to check out the platypus!

“We are also foodies, so love to try good coffee, chocolate, wines, and quality food.”

Homely, clean, inviting accommodation, as well as spaces to relax in nature, reset though activities on offer while on retreat, and time to explore what the hinterland has to offer – Tranquil Getaways On Obi Maleny is the perfect spot.

“Living here brings to mind one of my favourite quotes,” said Barb, “’it’s enough to just be’.”

Guests heard from high school chaplain Donna Turner, who provided an insight into her work, and she expressed her gratitude to the many individuals and groups who obviously were strongly behind her efforts.

Darren McMahon, a former Youth Worker, spoke on behalf of the chaplain’s employer, Your Dream School Programs, and gave an overview of Chaplaincy.

The School Guidance Counsellor, Dean Thomas, acknowledged the significant contribution made by Chappy Donna to the wellbeing of students and her unique role in the support services at the school.

Chair of the Chaplaincy Committee, Paul Tarbuck, confirmed the importance of community support if the highly valued work of chaplains is to continue to make a difference to the school experience of young people.

The hinterland community needs to fundraise $15,000 to cover legal and professional costs as it works to address the quarry issues with SCC. To donate, sign up as a member or for more information please follow Hinterland Quarry Action Group on Facebook.

Pause on quarry plans

Northern Blackall Range and Image Flat hinterland communities have convinced Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) to pause its plans to seek private tenders to operate its Dulong and Image Flat quarries.

A detailed submission outlining community concerns with the proposal, and backed by numerous local and regional community advocacy groups, was presented to SCC in early August. Because of the range and seriousness of issues identified, the submission requested SCC put an indefinite hold on releasing the tenders until all matters raised could be addressed.

Following extensive investigations and professional advice, hinterland residents are of the understanding that SCC-owned quarries at Dulong and Image Flat may be treated differently from private quarries in the region under the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme (SCPC). If founded, the anomalies could offer planning and development, operational and commercial advantages to SCC that local private quarry companies do not share.

President of Hinterland Quarry Action Group, Anne Veivers, says residents are rightly worried that if a private lessee applied to increase production at either Councilowned quarry, the community can’t have fair input into the decision.

SCC advised hinterland residents late last week that it is taking the matters raised very seriously and will temporarily pause the quarry tender process while it considers the content of the community submission.

The community submission has the support of Blackall Range Land Use and Planning Association, Mapleton and District Community Association, Montville Village Association, Hinterland Quarry Action Group, Organisation Sunshine CoastAssociation of Residents and Sunshine Coast Environment Council.

TWELFTH NIGHT

TwelfthNight is one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies, full of mistaken identity, wit, drama, pranks, revenge and passion! This 1980s-inspired production will have you howling with laughter in the aisles, as a lively and talented cast bring their joyful version to audiences over a two-week run.

TwelfthNight tells the story of Viola, a young woman who washes up on the shores of Illyria, disguises herself as a man, is sent to court a countess, and falls hard for a duke.

Production director and designer, Joy Hinckley, has also rewritten/edited this version, to make it more understandable for modern audiences not used to Shakespeare’s verse and iambic pentameter.

“Joy has done a great job editing the play, yet keeping the same rhythms and intentions,” said cast member Victoria Bensted (pictured as Countess Olivia with Mathieu Cadart as Malvolio - image Chris Grealy).

“Some of us have done Shakespeare before and for others it is their first time, but we are all really enjoying his layered plot, and his humour. In fact, we can find it hard to get through some of the scenes in rehearsal, as the dialogue and interplay can be so funny!”

The TwelfthNight season runs from September 15 - 23; to book tickets visit: lindlane.com.au/whats-on, or call 1300 732 764.

SILENCE OF THE JAMS

Prepare to be blown away by an epic cinematic experience that defies genre boundaries with Silence of the Jams. The production is set to captivate audiences in Maleny, Pomona, Eudlo and Coolum this September with its fusion of film and live music, including an entirely original soundtrack.

Silence of the Jams paints a vivid picture of a dystopian future where the world has plunged into an eerie silence. All live music has stopped, and robots (aka smartphones) now rule the world. Amidst this turmoil steps Eddie Ray, an unconventional hero who remains blissfully unaware of the digital domination.

In the wild west of the Sunshine Coast with a motorbike as his trusty steed and haunted by the songs in his head, Eddie must journey to find the weapon that can beat the machines – live music. Accompanied by his Band of Legends, a group of exceptional musicians hailing from the Sunshine Coast, Eddie takes to the stage, performing the soundtrack live alongside the film screening. Eddie does all his own stunts, writes and records his own music from his home studio (where he plays every instrument) and makes his own films. Silence of the Jams was brought to life by a twoperson powerhouse team, with Eddie himself in front of the camera and his talented wife Aimee behind it.

Sunshine Coast performance dates September 7-10, visit redchair. com.au for details and tickets.

THE END OF WINTER

This is a new work for the stage that speaks to our current climate crisis. Written in the wake of the devastation of the 2019 bush fires it asks: What’s happening to winter?

In Australia bushfires are becoming more frequent, our winters warmer and shorter. Will climate change erase winter leaving it to exist only in fairy tales, paintings, and historical accounts?

Noëlle Janaczewska’s masterpiece The End of Winter is about loss and resilience. It has won many accolades with Jane Phegan receiving Best Performance in a Leading Role at the 2022 Sydney Theatre Awards. “Janaczewska’s script is part sensory, part scientific, part history, totally literate and humongously heartfelt.” Richard Cotter, SydneyArtsGuide

Rangebow will return

Dear Editor,

Our 60 volunteers have handed back their vests and we have started packing away the costumes from The Rangebow Festival events over August. We are all exhausted but exhilarated by the response to the program that we were able to deliver to The Range communities of Maleny, Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton.

Having listened and responded to the feedback last year, we saw a 23 per cent increase in ticket sales and the uplifting mood of the festival clearly swept its way through the festival localities. So many events were sold out or were close to capacity – visitors from interstate and the region embraced the diverse range of experiences on offer, and told us they would return next year.

Our festival, operated by a registered charity, will be back next year 1 – 4 August 2024 with a program of tweaked favourites, as well as some new events to surprise and delight everyone.

This letter is to say a bi thank you to our sponsors, supporters, performers, volunteers and patrons for enabling us to bring an exciting program of experiences of taste, arts, film, theatre, culture, music and nature to the hinterland.

If anyone has feedback for us, or if would like to volunteer, perform or be a sponsor, please use the contact form on the website: therangebowfestival.org

‘Trump’ style tactics

‘If you don’t know, vote no’ is a hugely cynical and insulting tactic that the opposition leader Peter Dutton and the ‘no’ campaign have employed to try to derail the First Nations effort to enshrine an ‘Indigenous voice to parliament’. Mr Dutton has done everything to politicise and muddy the waters of the referendum in a Trump-style misinformation campaign.

Given many Australians are stretched financially and distracted by day-to-day pressures such advice might be appealing, but it is disingenuous and works against this oncein-a-generation opportunity that our First Nations people have proposed to us. If you don’t know, seek information from a

trusted source, as this is too important a moment in Australian history, at least it could be.

The truth is this is a very simple and clear proposition to the Australian community - that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders be recognised in our constitution as the first peoples of Australia and that there should be a body called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice which may make representations to parliament on matters relating to them.

It is an advisory body only, with no veto powers (not dissimilar to numerous other bodies that lobby our parliament such as the Business Council of Australia, Australian Hotels Association and Clubs NSW).

The detail that Dutton and others keep asking for does not exist, and he knows it, as this comes later through the process of parliamentary debate by our elected representatives.

More and more prominent and respected Australians are stepping up to add their backing to the ‘yes’ campaign for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. One of the most recent being the previous deputy leader of the Liberal Party, Julie Bishop.

In her address to the National Press Club she spoke of the importance of giving Indigenous people the power to make decisions to implement policies, rather than politicians, citing a recent review of government funded programs that identified those with successful outcomes were the ones that involved close consultation with the Indigenous community. “We’ve got to give it a chance,” Bishop implored.

A tangible example where a ‘voice’ would have been desirable was when Indigenous communities in Qld and NT had their alcohol restrictions lifted early last year, much to the dismay of community leaders. This then led to a sharp spike in alcohol-fuelled violence.

The prospect of waking up the morning after the referendum to see the likes of Pauline Hanson and Peter Dutton gloating over a smashed result is enough to make me do everything I can to support the ‘Yes’ campaign.

I would encourage others to do the same and join the largest ever grassroots volunteer movement in Australian history #yes23. Standing up for our First Nations people and their right to self-determine in matters that directly affect them is fair and is right.

The alternative is just plain mean.

Quick Quotes

Plastic is not fantastic

Good morning,

As a Flaxton local who also shops and dines regularly in the Montville area, I find it extremely upsetting that some of the stores in the Montville Village area are still continuing to use plastic bags.

As a beautiful Hinterland tourist destination, I believe we should be leading the way environmentally and have some type of overseeing or regulation of the banning of plastic bags in the Montville village.

I have many personal visitors throughout the year from interstate, who of course always visit the village and they too have commented on their concern that plastic bags were freely given out at some of the stores.

They have also commented on the vast positive difference with store owners who are obviously trying their hardest to follow the plastic bag ban and single use plastic ban, and other shop owners who seem dedicated to the environment and the beauty of the area.

Thank you so much for taking this into consideration.

Warm regards

The ‘so called’ referendum

Dear Editor

I would like to reply to 1- Mr Barracough in his column and Name and Address Supplied in the "Letters to the Editor"about their comments on the "So Called" referendum and 2- Mr Barraclough and his ideology beliefs.

Firstly, to Mr Barracough and "Name and address Supplied". I would like to think that the majority of the Australian public, be they White, Asian, Aboriginal, whatever background, are good and decent human beings and are interested in Australia moving forward as one to the benefit of everyone.

However, Mr Barraclough and "Name and Address Supplied" seem hell bent on pushing the divisive referendum. The worst part I think these people seem to be missing is that this referendum is being set and pushed by the sub-class of human beings called politicians, known for regularly lying and manipulating the system to their advantage and not the people.

Even worse than pushing this divisive agenda is the fact that these two individuals are prepared to vote yes for something that has not been clearly put out there, as far as what is actually going to change in the constitution and how it will affect Australia going forward. No wonder so many people are concerned and rightfully wary.

Regards Shane Daly

Ed note: Dear Shane, if you would like to read page 3 of this HT, you will find information busting myths and misconceptions about the Voice, and presenting facts. We hope this is helpful for those who are unsure how to vote at present.

“Don’t wait to be successful at some future point. Have a successful relationship with the present moment and be fully present in whatever you are doing. That is success.”

LUNCH TIME

A peaceful walk along a leafy trail, The sun is bright, while over us a pale Blue sky bears witness to a family meal, A magpie parent and chick, the real deal In front of us there, our own private show, We stand there transfixed, not daring to go.

The chirping babe was heard before it was seen, But mum and bub both calmly landed on the green Grass where much amassed food was supplied, The chick soon full; mum understandably tired. As beak to beak this midday meal was shared Not two metres from us, feeling neither threatened or scared.

To be there in their presence was such an unexpected treat, Who would have thought that on that very path we’d meet A local family going about their daily routine, What a privilege this sight that we had seen, Intruders to this regular daily repast, Alas, as we always knew, it would not last.

The meal is done, they fly back into their tree,  The bub fully sated, at least until tea

When the ritual repeats, what a great sight it will be For some lucky passer-by, as it was today, for me.

Did you know you’re here for a reason? I believe you are, but sometimes what that reason is seems grey, or out of focus and hard to know. I’ve found the best place to start is always in your heart because that’s where your purpose lives.

Often we sabotage our purpose and dreams, all because we’re afraid to put ourselves out there and believe in them. Here are some valuable questions to ask yourself in regards to your purpose. Do you get in your own way and not believe in the beauty of your dreams? What’s holding you back from moving forward?

What if we only get one go at this life? Choose to grab life with everything you’ve got and give that thing in your heart a go. It’s life changing when we do.

I encourage you to take hold of the magic that’s within you and just go for it. We all have different dreams that dwell within us but if they aren’t acted upon that’s where they’ll stay.

Decide to get out of your own way, start believing and get on with what needs doing, so you don’t leave this life with those dreams left in you.

It’s also a perfect time to reassess and make adjustments, because sometimes our desires have changed. There are no rules, they’re your dreams and it’s your life, just evaluate accordingly.

We all have a reason to live and a purpose in our heart to fulfill. You may need to excavate your soul to identify it, but when you stop, get quiet and consider your heart’s yearning you’ll absolutely find it. It’s never too late to start finding your reason, and it’s always worth pursuing.

Blessings

Use Your Mental Edge Focus on the process, the outcome will take care of itself

The biggest lesson that I have learned throughout the building of my career and working with hundreds of athletes, business owners and career professionals is to trust the

Don’t worry about the outcome, focus on the process. When you learn to focus on the process, more times than not, the outcome will take care of itself.

I’ve been able to meet, interact and be coached by the likes of Dr John De Martini, Paul Elisio and Juliet Lever of Evolve and Relaunch, Kerwin Rae and Bruce Campbell (10 x Global Winning Business Coach). All of these coaches have the same concept and foundation in place - work on the process.

Even though I would say that’s the number one biggest lesson, it’s the hardest to do, because in our society everyone is interested in the outcome. We all want the end result, because that’s what’s fast, sexy and attractive. But you have to remember that going back to the process is what matters.

I think the best way to illustrate the process is this:

If something in our Sunshine Coast facility breaks, I either pay someone to fix it or I just assume that it’s going to stay broken forever, because I know that I’m not going to do it. Yet, despite my lack of skills, I have confidence in myself that I could build a sound sturdy brick wall or an igloo.

The reason I have that confidence is because you build it brick by brick, it’s so analogous to the process. I have the confidence that I could pick up one brick at one time and set it exactly where it needs to go.

Then I could go back and pick up another brick and set it exactly where it needs to go with precision. If I did that enough times, eventually I’d have a sound and sturdy brick wall or igloo.

But, as soon as I lose focus on each individual brick and start worrying about the wall or the house or whatever it was that I was building, things could get messy. I think if you can have the brick-by-brick mentality and focus on each individual brick, things will work out for themselves.

So, if somebody has a goal of achieving something, take that goal and reverse engineer it and start to work backwards.

Start to look at the little incremental steps, the micro steps and the bricks, if you will, that are needed to achieve that goal and put all of your attention and focus into each little step that you

A new hope

Anew plan is set to help protect our region’s “ancient mariners’’. The Sunshine Coast Marine Turtle Conservation Plan has been adopted at Council’s latest meeting. It includes extensive input from the region’s turtle champions and outlines Council’s plan for the recovery of marine turtle populations on the Sunshine Coast.

To do this, it will take steps to reduce threats to marine turtles, such as light pollution, and strengthen support of the dedicated community volunteer programs – TurtleCare Sunshine Coast and Coolum and North Shore Coast Care.

Bright artificial light can confuse hatchlings, leading them away from the sea and leaving them exhausted and even more vulnerable to predators. It can also be a major issue for nesting mothers, stopping them coming ashore.

Addressing lighting impact on marine turtles was among the highest priority actions identified by the community during consultation for the plan. The conservation plan will now work towards ensuring existing public lighting in sensitive coastal areas is more turtle friendly. Solutions include retrofitting light poles with smarter, amber lights or installing light shields that restrict glare.

A toolkit will be prepared for the development sector, local businesses and residents to give practical advice on suitable products and designs to reduce light pollution.

Another positive change will be the development of a locally refined marine turtle dune vegetation

plan, so the right type of grasses, shrubs and trees are planted in the dunes to create a darker, more inviting and accessible space for turtles to nest.

The Sunshine Coast citizen science program is very popular and plans will also focus on gradually growing the number of turtle-focused citizen scientists through diversifying opportunities and integrating Indigenous cultural knowledge.

Another key action of the plan is to build capacity and employment opportunities for the local traditional owners to be involved in marine turtle conservation management.

Council’s Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor, Peter Cox, thanked the community for providing feedback to help protect marine turtles.

“This plan sets us on the right track to help save one of the Sunshine Coast’s most beloved marine animals,” Cr Cox said.

Actions were added to the plan to address potential threats to turtle populations through willful vegetation damage and disturbance from dogs off-leash.

Cr Cox said, “It won’t be until 2035 that we will start to see the benefits of our long-term investment in turtle conservation and the amazing annual work of the three turtle citizen science groups within the Sunshine Coast rookery.”

A strong partnership across the region led to the plan’s development with Sunshine Coast Council, Kabi Kabi First Nation Peoples, Queensland Government, an independent Technical Advisory Panel and community leaders of TurtleCare, Coolum and North Shore Coast Care and Bribie Island Turtle Trackers volunteers all collaborating on the plan.

The implementation plan will be reviewed and updated annually. The adopted Sunshine Coast Marine Turtle Conservation plan is available at sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au by searching “turtlecare”.

A full summary of the feedback received during community engagement and Council’s response is available at haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

A keystone animal in our backyard

What do spotted gum, ironbark and messmate have in common?

They are all hardwood trees that flower at night and depend on flying foxes for survival to pollinate their flowers and spread their seeds. Flying foxes are a migratory, nomadic "keystone" species, which means that many other plants and animals rely on them for their survival and wellbeing.

Not only do we depend on flying fox pollinators for our hardwood floors, but koalas and Greater Gliders also depend on the trees that flying foxes pollinate for food and shelter. Without these magnificent hardwoods there wouldn’t be fabulous native forests

for us to enjoy or habitat for our native birds.

Unfortunately, many roosts and major feeding sites have been destroyed in the past by building development. This has marginalised flying fox populations in the Sunshine Coast to the point where they have fewer sites that are safe to roost in. It is estimated that as many as 50% of individuals in a roost each night are transient which means they may only be there for one night before moving on.

Flying foxes have a poor reputation in urban areas, but if left undisturbed they are generally fairly quiet during much of the breeding season. The noise levels do change in March/April when many of the

young have become more independent and it is mating season. However, when they are stressed or frightened, they make a lot more noise.

There was an episode in Witta last year when all the Grey Headed flying foxes became very agitated and noisy. When we looked up we realised that they were concerned about a Wedge-Tailed Eagle that was flying low over their roosting site. This site has also been visited on numerous occasions by Sea Eagles, Goshawks and other smaller birds of prey. Over 25 non-predatory bird species have also been sited feeding under and around their roost in Witta.

All flying foxes and their roosting habitat are protected in Queensland under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. Help injured flying foxes by avoiding contact and calling trained and vaccinated wildlife rescue professionals on 1300 ANIMAL (264 625).

It’s a win-lose situation

Most people living in the Blackall Range area would know that in addition to our beautiful native bushland areas, we also have an extensive invasive weed problem.

Having been involved with a few local Landcare groups, I quickly became familiar with the invasive weeds of the area. These include Smallleaf Privet, Broad-leaf Privet, Camphor Laurel, Wild Tobacco and Lantana to name just a few. Another thing quickly learned is that weed removal is an endless chore, they just keep returning. So, where do they come from?

Over the last century or so, some of our native bird species have developed a taste for the fruit of the above-mentioned weed species. Whilst this is a win by providing additional food sources for our native birds, it’s also a lose by having a very effective method of spreading the weed seeds.

I’ve even heard it said that the establishment of weed species, coinciding with native forest clearing in the early-mid 1900’s has potentially saved some bird species

In the Wild

from regional extinction. This may be an exaggeration, however, there is no doubt that the weed species are at least an important short-term supplement to the sometimes-infrequent fruit and seed supply

I remember walking down to the Maleny weir a few years ago to do a bit of bird photography, and what I saw there has always struck with me. I saw Brown Cuckoo-Doves feeding on Wild Tobacco, Silvereyes feeding on Blackberry Nightshade, Dusky Honeyeaters feeding on Lantana, Topknot Pigeons and White-headed Pigeons feeding

on Broad-leaf Privet, and Red-browed Finch feeding on the seeds of introduced grasses, all introduced weed species.

I couldn’t help thinking, would these birds even be here if not for the weeds, but wouldn’t it have been so much better if they were all feeding on native plants. The loss of native plant species and invasion of weeds may also mean that some of the other bird species could be at risk as they may not be able to supplement their diet with weed species.

I’m not suggesting for a moment that weed species should not be removed, in fact of course they should be removed. However, in a given area I believe they should be removed incrementally and be immediately replaced with suitable native species. This will ensure an ongoing food source for our native birds, while giving the new native trees time to mature and produce a new source of food.

We are fortunate to have several Landcare groups on the range, and also re-vegetation consultants and fantastic local native plant nurseries. So, if you can, get involved with native re-vegetation, our native birds will thank you.

Afew of our clients have expressed concerns about the upcoming bushfire season. Fortunately, in my experience, the vegetation that is supported by the red soils of the Maleny plateau is not particularly prone to bushfire.

As soon as the soil type changes out the back of Reesville however, I have seen severe bushfire damage.

Of course the species of vegetation plays a huge part in bushfire risk, with the greatest risk being presented by the Eucalyptus genus.

On the other hand, the broadleaved rainforest species supported by our red soil, can even have fire retardant qualities, a good reason to plant them in your garden. Obviously too, if the weather conditions get really dry, the risk also increases.

with Spencer Shaw

September is Biodiversity Month

As always there’s a lot to celebrate in September. Spring officially starts (although this year I think that was in late July when young Red Cedar’s started to put on new leaf), it’s also Biodiversity Month, Save the Koala Month, Landcare Week, National Wattleday on the 1st and Threatened Species Day on the 7th.

This September is very much time to celebrate our unique flora and fauna – as if you need an excuse! Now is the time to get your hands in the soil, plant a garden (or if your ambitious a forest!), whack a weed or two, build a nest box, plant some fruit trees and veggies.

Living in South-East Queensland we are lucky enough to find ourselves in one of the world’s true Biodiversity Hotspots, with our local native plants alone having

a diversity of over 3000 species found in this relatively small region, in the Sunshine Coast Council region alone over 2000 species of plants have been recorded.

I’d like to say that all this amazing biodiversity that also calls this place home is equally lucky to have our company, but that would be stretching the narrative, given the clearance of native ecosystems over the last 180 years ... However, I do like to be optimistic and hope that things are getting better.

Our appreciation of our native flora and fauna has increased dramatically over the last decade or two and, maybe sometime down the track, we may begin to be as comfortable and knowledgeable in this land and the life it

is blessed with, so as to begin to approach the relationship that First Nations Peoples have with this country and all of its biodiversity.

Planting local native plants in your gardens and across your land helps create connectivity in the landscape and enables our unique biodiversity to move through the landscape again, ensuring their survival.

We’ve got a huge September planned to celebrate biodiversity at Forest Heart with art exhibitions, nature journalling, photography, bushfood, kids’ workshops and so much more. September 2023 also sees our business, Brush Turkey Enterprises, celebrate our 25th birthday, and our retail nursery, Forest Heart, celebrate its 8th birthday. If that is the case then you need to look at generally well known factors such as getting leaf and stick debris out of your house gutters, reducing the fuel load in the form of dead sticks and leaves on the ground, making sure you have a good water supply, and that the surrounding vegetation is trimmed back away from the house to create a fire break.

To me, eucalyptus trees are so scary in a bushfire because the volatile orals that they contain have a flashpoint of 49°C. That is not very hot when you are talking about the environment around a bushfire.

This means that if the ambient temperature gets above 49°C, and there is a source of ignition, they can literally explode. Conversely, after a savage bushfire that I saw go through Southern Reesville about 15 years ago, young Celerywood trees, Polyscius elegans, were seemingly untouched.

I would want some of them around my house in a fire.

Invest, design and create your work/ life balance

Damon at Build Assist is on hand to work on design, renovations, shed houses and much more with you, and we have The Beach Investor helping you invest in property through EKTA Real Estate.

Ekta Real Estate utilises blockchain technology, together with fractions of real estate management, to help make the process of investing in property easier and simpler.

'What is blockchain technology?' I hear some of you ask.

A blockchain is essentially a shared database or ledger. According to Investopdiia. com, blockchains ‘are best known for their crucial role in cryptocurrency systems for maintaining a secure and decentralised record of transactions, but they are not limited to cryptocurrency uses.’

They basically make data in any industry immutable, so there is no risk of data being altered. This means the only trust needed is at the point where a user or program enters data. Because of this, the need for trusted third parties (such as auditors) is reduced, and thus costs (and mistakes) decrease.

By using blockchain in property investing, the aim is to make the whole process smoother and speedier for the person who would like to invest.

If this sounds tempting to you, check out EKTA through the QR code on page 35!

Revolutionising Real Estate: Ekta App Puts Global Ownership Within Reach - by TheBeachInvestor

Dream of diving into real estate with as little as $200? Ekta Real Estate is turning this fantasy into reality, making property ownership faster, simpler, and more attainable than ever before.

The magic wand? FREM - the Fractions of Real Estate Management. Imagine owning a slice of prime property, not only accessing high historical rental returns but also sidestepping the labyrinthine regulatory hurdles that global ownership often entails.

In a world where real estate deals are notorious for being slow, location-restricted, and capital-intensive, Ekta's app is a gamechanger. Picture this: you can now expand your property portfolio globally, utilising your bank card, bank transfer, or even

cryptocurrency.

The innovation behind FREM is the key. Instead of wrestling with complex ownership regulations, FREM holders gain property management rights, ensuring rental returns minus the headache. Once sold, the property title transfers to a custodial entity, with earnings flowing to FREM holders via a unique voting system.

Ekta Real Estate has broken down barriers, inviting everyone worldwide to partake in property ownership. With Ekta, your $200 isn't just a token - it's a golden ticket to the lucrative world of real estate. Scan QR code to find out more.
