In this 100th year of our history, we are proud to present the graduating classes to you. In this particular year we look as much back in time as we have the pleasure of looking forward into the future. This department has existed in many years and throughout this time its students, staff and teachers have been occupied with looking forward. Because that is the essence of design envisioning the future. When we present these exceptional young people to you here today, that is what we see. The future. The students graduating here today are a remarkable group. They have studied, tried, failed and tried again. They have laughed and cried and gone through an incredible journey of growth. They have honed their skills in the field of product design and they carry with them an optimism, a humor and a determination that will allow them to not just envision our future but also shape it. In this catalogue, you will find a wide variety of interests, product categories, ideas and materials. The diversity illustrates how bold our students are in their vision of our collective future. These classes show us in their work, that diligent well thought out design work is not an outcome - it is a journey. This exhibition and catalogue are not the end of a process but really the beginning of a much longer and much more important journey into the future. To which we as a department wish all of our graduates the best of luck and that the passion that brought them here today might carry them forward in their future endeavors. To the student: On this special day one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, in this single, solitary, monumental moment in your life – is to decide, without apology, to commit to the journey. We know that wherever your paths take you, you will make a difference. Please let us share in your experiences and adventures and keep in touch with us through the alumni network. Because we would like to celebrate your progress with you in the future. Lastly look and remember the names and faces around you, because these are the ones to shape the next 100 years to come.

PRODUCT DESIGN
The academic tradition at the Department of Product Design is characterized by tangible workshop based processes with testing of materials and processes associated with the development of products for a sustainable environment. The perceptual experience of products and their materiality plays a fundamental role. Through problem-based learning the department emphasizes the use of design thinking as a tool in every design prosess from service design to industrial design.
DESIGN THINKING
The students navigate through their projects by implementing Design Thinking as a means of structuring the process. The six phases are utilized both in successive as well as in parallell, repetative and overlapping order.

Bachelor Product Design
The bachelor students attain skills and competence in the handling and applying of aesthetics, mechanics, materials, and concept development as facets of product design. In using design methodologies, the students gain access to explore the role that the potential product may have within various perspectives such as globalization, sustainability, culture and user- & market dimensions. Our students explore what design is-, possible approaches, and how it influences us. In the space in between the theoretical and the practical, our students draw on a multitude of approaches to perform their design explorations.

With PIRK I want to raise awareness of what can end up in our ocean by reusing plastic trash in jewelry. Plastic packaging is often made for a onetime use only, but takes hundreds of years to decompose. When plastic ends up outside its intended loop, it can do great damage. I have explored this issue combined with handcrafted and recycled materials through product development and brand-identity building. This untotas explatibus dellorum facea diaepudandi has led to PIRK’s production line, inspired by teceprae saecatus volorpo rumquia volestis ocean waves. The main focus of this project was to facilitate activity and social interaction among the elderly. How can digital platforms help older people to live in their homes for longer? This project is based on a user-centered process that uses a digital platform. I gained a lot of insight and inspiration from observing daily rehabilitation practices in the municipalities, where there are a number of programs for elderly people who still live at home. Staff Members
It is time to let the faculty members shine alongside the graduates. After 100 years of building a foundation for the Department of Product Design, we would like to reveal the people behind the scenes. Together, our faculty represent a broad spectrum of knowledge that characterises the education we provide. This exhibition shows samples of their various expertise: from design products to public art to service design to sustainability perspectives and pedagogical methods. With their love for design, they prepare each student to enter the role of designer in an ever-changing world to best serve its future needs. The department’s faculty members represent product design as a profession in an insightful manner.

GEOMETRIC ORIGAMI CONES It started with a proposal for a closed competition for an outdoor art project for the Åmli New Town Hall in 2012. The recognizable royal motif was based on Åmli as a forest municipality with valuable natural surroundings, but the context, expression, size and material used provided opportunities for varied interpretations and associations. The underlying purpose of the design was to remind the building’s users of things that were essential to the activities of the building. The conglomerate design with twisted lines and faceted escalating surfaces, together with steel material and light, give the moulds a technological expression. This can evoke associations with knowledge, mathematics, geometry and folded paper (origami), thus pointing back to forestry. New variants are also being produced. Lundstein Primary School in Gjøvik had a congress in 2014, and as of May 2017, two congresses are located at ”Sæter Hage” on Nordstrand in Oslo. (Collaborative Project with Liv Anne Lundberg). STEEN O. BENDTZEN
MATERIALS, VARIATIONS AND THE PRESENCE OF OBJECTS I find great pleasure in objects with age—from societies fundamentally different from ours— thoughtfully designed artefacts that clearly tell us about the time period in which they were made. The technical innovation interests me, such as the new synthetic colours of the Biedermaier period from 1820 to 1850 allowing the bourgeoisies’ homes to explode in an orgy of clear, intense colours. Think of the bold colours of the period, such as glass in uranium oxide yellow in combination with cobalt blue and bone-white, pink and light blue or green and red and light blue all in the same glass. And the forms are heavy, polished, dramatic shapes. Drinking vessels for coffee are for me defined as the cups or mugs that I want to drink coffee from. Function can be very strange—sometimes it is nice that one has to be present to ingest the coffee. A drinking bowl can be a little too large so that you focus on holding it and notice to how the drinking edge touches your mouth before you ingest the hot coffee. With two years of seam education from my adolescence, my interest in textile remains strong. I knit a lot in the winter—mostly tests and investigations. For example, what are the consequences of small displacements in colour, in the thickness of the pins, in tightness?

A CROSS-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH Arild Berg focuses on cross-disciplinary innovation. He explores how students and professional practitioners of art and design can engage in this approach through his process-oriented research projects that utilise participatory methods and qualitative case studies. He teaches this process in the graduate course Philosophy of Science and Design Research at the department of Product Design, HiOA. He is a member of the research groups Design, Culture and Sustainability; Art in Society; and the Collaborative Action Research Network (CARN). He has an MA in ceramic art and a Doctor of Art in artistic research in public space. The photos emerged from his doctoral studies, ‘Artistic Research in Public Space: Participation in Material-Based Art’, which he defended in Helsinki, Finland, at Aalto University in 2014. The project was displayed in Norway at Kunstog designhall HiOA (Art and Design Gallery HiOA) as an installation of three tables, with each table representing his main three public art project using participatory design methods: ‘White Cloud’ for a hospital, ‘Sunrise’ for a church and ‘Solitude’ for a school.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY AND MY UNDERSTANDING OF DESIGN
As head of studies at the Department of Product Design, I sometimes see a design project where I try to optimise the study programmes to educate the most highly qualified design students. I have in mind that the students’ design competence can, and will be, applied in more areas than we are familiar with today. My educational philosophy is closely linked to my understanding of design: that you learn the most when you are in an actual situation with the body and the mind. Design methods thus can be used to help the body increase empathy and expand understanding. This is something we have in us naturally to varying degrees. Design studies, therefore, should be practiced in real contexts, and exercising such empathy can be

seen as the core of design practice. My design interest is broad in general, but I have a specific love for wood as a material. Wood enables an enormous range of expression in both processed and unprocessed forms. The characteristics and possibilities of the various wooden layers greatly fascinate me. This is an area I will explore even more. Although history has shown that people can use wood as a resource in extraordinary ways, wood as a material is a resource with unlimited potential for further exploration. I am in general concerned with sustainability— nature, the environment and biodiversity—due to my interest in the material properties of design.

A PSYCHOLOGY-BASED DESIGN APPROACH FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION
The figure shows a method to design for emotionally durable products (products that you want to keep for a long time because you like them). The method is a synthesis of research from the fields of sustainable design, sustainable behavior, persuasion and habit psychology and product attachment. Accordingly, products created by this method should be more engaging for the users and therefore experienced as meaningful. Hence, people may not replace products developed by this method as fast as they used to- a situation that contributes to sustain of the environment. The method is created in cooperation with psychologist Cathrine Moestue.

”BAKE IT EASY”
Bake it Easy is produced and marketed by the traditional Norwegian company Porsgrund Porselænsfabrik AS, who bought the production rights in 2000. The product was the final exam assignment of my Product Design Education. Apart from minor manufacturing adjustments, in agreement with myself as the designer, the exam model was practically identical to the factory’s final product. The objective is to pour the cake mix straight onto the heatproof base of the spring-form cake dish, remove the spring form, and serve. The product won the Quality Mark for Good Design in the category ‘Industrial Design’ in the 2002 Norwegian Design Council Awards.
124
The panel commented: Bake it Easy is a unique, innovative and practical product. The spring form is an integral part of the heat- and frost-resistant base. The plastic cover simplifies the preservation of the cake. Nowadays Porsgrund are marketing a modified version of the original product (slightly smaller base plus other amendments, made without the designer’s agreement). You can also find copies at two competing Norwegian kitchen utensil retailers, something that proves the lasting popularity of the design. However, as the product designer I would emphasise that the original 2001 model (pictured) was aesthetically and functionally superior.

”Dynamic Grip” is a ceramic sculpture that represents my interest in three-dimensional form and material. The sculpture is part of the form explorations of my PhD project, titled “To grip, to get a grip of form: Augmentation of three-dimensional form knowledge from the perspective of the hands’. My goal is to show how understanding is based on our perceptions and that thoughts begin in the hands. The sketch ”Synesthetic” expresses the interplay between visual and haptic perception. Form comprehension is an important competence in design, for the form-giving of products as well as for the visualization of ideas and for communicating structures and contexts in complex systems. In my teaching at Product Design, HiOA, I am concerned that the students adequately develop their perceptions so that they are equipped for exploring, evaluating and communicating their designs through form.

RESEARCH TO DISCOVER HIDDEN TOPOGRAPHY To me research is the foundation of the design process, because it helps inform the design of products that affect people’s lives. I see humans and technology as partners in a reciprocal relationship: they affect one another. Including user perspectives, opinions, values, and experiences in the design of products is to me an ethical responsibility and opportunity to create products that truly impact people’s lives in a positive manner A product is more than form and function. It comes to life in the interaction with its user. The bowl you see here is one of a collection of different sizes. They are in a manner a response to a new local. A visualization of this experience of arriving in a new landscape and realizing that the terrain, the city, the people carry within themselves a hidden topography. Which requires time, respect and curiosity to become acquainted with. These bowls are a manifestation of this hidden topography. They are based on the landscape hidden under the water surface of lake Biel/Bienne..

DESIGN ANTHROPOLOGIST AND PSYCHOLOGIST
Design anthropology is a people-centric approach to the field of design. Key to this approach is the concept of co-creation— involving the very people who the services and products are being created for. This changes the game from ‘creating for’ to ‘creating with’. I never expected to become a design anthropologist, but suddenly, and quite unexpectedly, I found myself involved in the pre-concept work for a commercial airplane. I would go on to work for Microsoft as their Lead Design Anthropologist, a position for which I spent time with families all over the world studying life stages and events. The purpose of these interactions was to gather insight to inform the design and development of meaningful, relevant, useful and desirable solutions.
130
This is where the people-centric approach was born. For that reason, I am deeply grateful for the time I spent at Microsoft and for the ability they gave me to learn and grow as a design anthropologist. The achievement from my time at Microsoft that I am most proud of is ‘Howard’s Corner’. Howard and Martha were an elderly couple who lived in a retirement community and were passionate about how technology connected them to their past, their present and their future. I worked with Howard and Martha throughout my entire tenure at Microsoft, and they influenced the lives of many of Microsoft’s employees.

The Ida desk is made of maple and light grey Valchromat, and the surfaces are treated with oil. The product was made for a young woman. The idea was to make the furniture timeless, light and slim, with a nuanced colour scheme, such as the woman it was intended for. ”Ida” started on a piece of paper, with a pencil and my right hand. Sketches with simple geometric shapes evolved into a drawing with set measurements, but it was only during the processing of the material that it took its final shape. The form followed the function and properties of the material. The substructure’s frame elements were designed primarily to give space for the knees when sitting, but also to give the desk a lighter and more soaring (floating) feeling. I like to stretch the boundaries of materials, and I did this by making the table legs as slim as possible. The strength that I lost was compensated for by a solid and stable undercarriage. My profession is my passion. I am concerned with good craftsmanship, and I want my furniture to stand the test of time in shape, quality and sustainability.

”THE RISE COFFEE <OVERSKRIFT> CMD/CTRL TABLE”+ SHIFT FOR Å REDIGERE Coffee tables often have a low height to look good in the interior and not dominate the space in front of the couch. However, many of us use our coffee tables for meals and work and the low hight forces us to lean forward from the couch in an uncomfortable way. Ideally, the height of the table should be able to be adapted to the user’s sitting position instead of the user having to adapt to the height of the table. This would mean a higher table top that is closer to the user. The Rise coffee table has been constructed with a adjustable table top so that it has a low position when it is not being actively used and can then be raised and displaced towards the user when the need arises. This technical solution enables the user to sit more comfortably during active use, such as for work and meals. The table was developed in conjunction with Bapd 3100, Specialization in Product Design, and the development process was used as part of the teaching.

DESIGN FOR A SUSTAINABLE CULTURE: PERSPECTIVES, PROBLEMS AND EDUCATION
One purpose of design is to find innovative solutions to current and future problems in line with societal changes. Research is a foundational aspect of this process, both practically and theoretically. In particular, there is need for new knowledge and understanding of diversity, environmental issues and the significance of aesthetics in everyday life. The question of personal and regional identity is also important in a world characterized by globalization. In order for design to have a lasting impact, this research needs to be performed on a multidisciplinary platform in cooperation with other research paradigms and business enterprises, and it must be integrated into design education. My most recent research has focused on the many dimensions of

sustainability, particularly its cultural and aesthetic aspects. The result is the book titled Design for a Sustainable Culture: Perspectives, Problems and Education. It explores the relationship between sustainability, culture and the shaping of human surroundings. Short bibliography: Design for a Sustainable Culture: Perspectives, Problems and Education. Ed., w.
