EDITOR’S NOTE Break free The world is getting smaller and smaller every second. With all the technological advancements that connect disparate regions around the globe—new apps are introduced every day, such as Periscope, Facebook Live, Telegram, etc.—getting some quiet time and listening to your innermost desires have become a forlorn dream. Yet an undisturbed environment is the best option for a cluttered, informationoverloaded soul. We daydream of paradise— whatever your version of it is—

everywhere, every day, all the time. It may be a place of solitude or a destination to explore or a goal to conquer; we move heaven and earth to break free of our mundane, hackneyed lives. On the cover, videographer Samantha Lee breathed in fresh air in the Land Down Under to get a different perspective on her chosen career. However, if you’ll be stuck in the concrete jungle for the entire summer, we compiled tips on how to handle the steady rise in temperature and what scents to wear amid the heat.

Hi Northern Living! I picked up a copy during Art Fair thinking it was a brochure or something (really sorry!), but I was in for a very pleasant surprise when I opened it. I really like the overall aesthetic and the feel of the paper. The February cover is also very artsy, for lack of a better term. Hoping to be surprised by your magazine again. Heat rash Let’s start off with the least alarming one, heat rash, also called prickly heat, is a skin irritation that is caused by excessive sweating, which can, in turn, block the skin’s sweat glands. It is more common among infants as their sweat glands are not yet fully developed. Tip: During the hottest of days, avoid wearing tight clothing. Bring out those loose cotton shirts to let sweat evaporate freely and easily. Also, avoid using heavy creams or lotions as they may clog sweat ducts.

Heat stroke Heat stroke is the most alarming of the four. This can happen when heat exhaustion is disregarded and your body fails to regulate your temperature but unlike the previous illness, you stop sweating when this occurs. Other symptoms are confusion, fainting, seizures, or even going into a coma. Tip: This needs immediate medical attention. But quick fixes like standing in front of an electric fan or air conditioner may help ease symptoms.

BEAUT Y

SCENT SELECTION

A change in temperature may not be good for your favorite scent TEXT RENZ NOLLASE ILLUSTRATION REESE LANSANGAN

Summer has the power to evoke freshness as well as discomfort, depending on your location and disposition. In Manila’s concrete hutch, a rise in temperature signals a barrage of sensory stimulation: overwhelming heat emanating from the asphalt, ripe odors rising from sewers and, on the hottest days, from the dazed co-worker. And while we usually associate the offense with the lack of a higher regard for soap, the blame can also be attributed to how heat affects scents and our olfactory senses. Warmer temperatures diffuse scents more easily and heighten our sense of smell. That is why during the hotter summer months, perfumes become necessities that are often abused. To save your favorite (and not to mention expensive) bottle of perfume from reckless spraying abandon, consider mastering these smart perfume habits.

Find a safe place The formula for the classic perfume hasn’t changed much in the past few centuries; it’s made up mainly of water, alcohol, and different combinations of essential oils. These oils react to heat and light. Keeping your perfume in a cool, dark place helps preserve its original composition. Conversely, a bright, humid place like a bathroom counter will alter your perfume’s scent. Spritz on the right spots Pulse points are still the best spots to spray your perfume on, as these areas of skin are warmer and allow scents to mature throughout the day. Scent rises, so spraying the lower pulse points-on the ankles and behind the knees-allows perfume to linger longer. Spray some on your hair as well. It carries perfume best and diffuses scent with the slightest movement.

NORTHERNliving

07

Moisturize and lock Dry skin does not hold scent well as the perfume’s oils need to bind to other oils on the skin. This is the reason why hair maintains scent well: the natural oils on your tresses lock the heady, scented oils in place. Before spraying on your scent, moisturize with almond oil or an unscented lotion. If you wish to create a unique scent of your own, you can opt to layer your fragrances by using a scented lotion that complements your perfume’s smell. Pick the right scent Scents react to heat. Citrus notes fade quickly in warmer weather while woodsy or musky scents last longer. Intense floral scents bloom in the heat, but be careful about how much you spritz on as a delicate blossom may turn cloying. A perfume is an extension of one’s persona. For summer, something light and refreshing is always a good thing.

left that bed, he’s the only one who knows about that spot.” Lee tells me she doesn’t really think about much when she finds herself purposely lost and wandering around on her journeys. But while she was sitting on that bed in the middle of the Australian Outback, watching the sun set over Ayers Rock, she thought about what she wanted to do in Manila when she returned. Coming and going When we arrive in La Union, Lee’s right at home. She’s here almost every month. According to her, it’s part of her New Year’s resolution to go on monthly trips out of Manila. Her desire to “get out” is another addition to the collective groan of the harried populace trapped in Manila’s urban sprawl. “When you’re in the city and you’re so caught up in your life, you think that whatever you’re going through, that’s it na. So, every trip you take should help you realign yourself with what you’re supposed to do. “Traveling is a sort of escape. That’s why it’s appealing to everyone. But for me, I was searching for something. The way I see it, I spent my early 20s packing and moving away and trying to find all the answers, but then, you can only find them when you unpack and just decide to stay in one place.” After moving away to Melbourne twice, Lee realized that it wasn’t the place to take root. “I feel like people who go away always find something they want to bring back home.”

Putting down roots Lee has been back for only six months now, but she’s already working on a number of ways to build a base in Manila. For starters, she’s taken on the role of multimedia editor at CNN for CNN Life, a website, she says, that aims to be the authority on all things pop culture. She’s also developing a web series. The story will be about love and the protagonist is a strong female character. “You know how there’s a stereotype of Filipino women being shy or demure? What if you’re a girl who’s super outspoken, though? It’s very important for girls who are growing up in the Philippines to see a representation of themselves in their native media.” Her voice changes a bit; she sounds more excited. “And then, hopefully, if things go well, I get to shoot a movie by the end of this year.” Based on all the projects she has coming up, it seems Lee’s going to be in Manila for a while, but she’s not here to stay. She tells me that she wants to live in five places before she dies. Even though Lee’s back on dry land, new waves are beckoning. While doing work in the Philippines, she still has some projects with companies based in Australia. “It doesn’t matter where you are, as long as you can do the work. I feel like the future is not going to be geography-bound.” I don’t doubt what she’s saying, and on this particularly clear day in San Juan, with the sea breeze and the sounds of waves crashing on the shore, I wish the future were now.

TO THE HIDEOUT

At the end of the obscure alley, wandering diners take their fill of modern Asian comfort food TEXT PRISTINE DE LEON PHOTOGRAPHY PATRICK SEGOVIA

There’s always a bit of curiosity that comes with hidden places. You either feel like you’re safely sheltered from the city’s daily riot or you’ve just stumbled upon the secret hub of a wilder party. No Reservations falls somewhere in the middle. You walk through a narrow alley, ascend a rusty, steel staircase, and come across an industrial-themed resto—with its red door declaring that happy hour has come early. “We have unlimited wine from Tuesdays to Thursdays,” says Anthea Go, one of the five partners behind this half-a-yearold comfort food hideaway. Their range of beers, rums, whiskeys, and wines invites every diner to unwind after work. Co-partner John Carl Ang says that couples also come here to break the ice. The menu, cleverly created by chef Jay Angeles upon his return from

Finland, boasts modern Asian grub. Thai-style Baby Pork Ribs, Salmon and Apple, Lechon Macau Buns, Tempura of Oysters, and Beijing Duck are all there, waiting to acquaint you with some nuance of the Orient hidden inside this unpretentious hole-in-the-wall. The Grilled Corn turns the common side dish into the star of the show. Decidedly complex in its presentation, it’s as ambitious as it is unapologetic in its show of flavor. You sample the tickling texture of the bonito flakes, nori, and kewpie and taste the liberally slathered mayo that tenders a wild jolt of the sprinkled togarashi as you continue to spear the sweet bits of corn on the cob. Never mind the inelegance with which you eat the corn; the greater merit of being here is, simply, no one’s watching. A crowd favorite—and a

NORTHERNliving

welcome accompaniment to any choice of liquor—is the Seoul Style Wings and Waffles. Small portions of mildly spicy wings sit atop the chewy cuts of waffles laden with spring onions. You keep munching mindlessly on the comfort food until you down the last bottle of beer, slightly inebriated, but never more satisfied. “When you’re here, we just want you to let loose. Don’t think of anything, just enjoy your food,” says Go, adding that the name means there are no inhibitions in this place. “We want people to come visit us, have a new experience, just relax, and dine with friends,” adds Ang. Rightly so, at 10 p.m., the lights are dimmed, some of the guests stand leaning on the railings with bottles in hand, and the casual conversation flows just as smoothly as the liquor.

T HE GET

COOL COMPANY

A classic essential to keep you nippy all summer long TEXT PAM BROOKE CASIN

In a country where it’s hot and humid for most part of the year, people are almost habitually scurrying to get somewhere cool. Fresh, humming seaside air joined by lapping waves composes the soundtrack of a usual summertime reverie—and what better instrument to play it than a good ol’ fan reminiscent of your grandma’s. It may prove to be a treat now, a luxury even, since the re-introduction of vintage-inspired fans in the market. The greyish-green, almost verdigris hue of the Vornador’s metal case calls up lazy, hazy images of the beach, just as when we first beheld it as restless teens. Its gold grills and nameplate written in retro script evoke the solid, old-fashioned quality of fans used many moons ago, back when one’s childhood was spent in a grandparent’s house. It doesn’t matter where the Vornado is placed, atop an office desk or on the bedroom floor, because its retro design blends with any setting. If not for its three-speed setting and full-action pivot head for multidirectional airflow, it might be even mistaken as a piece of found art—a kinetic sculpture, that is, meant for relaxing and cooling down.

Available at Rustan’s, Shangri-La Plaza Mall.
