nuvali dirt weekend
The legacy of risky yet thrilling mountain bike action continues in the NUVALI Dirt Weekend, now going on its sixth year.
All dirt roads led to the sprawling NUVALI community in Laguna for the sixth edition of the NUVALI Dirt Weekend, which undoubtedly proved to be the biggest Dirt Weekend yet— not just in terms of a huge turnout, but as well as the world-class caliber of events on deck last Nov. 21-23. The Dirt Weekend has become one of NUVALI’s signature events since its inception in 2008, drawing a big number of cyclists from all over the country. Approximately 900 cyclists joined the events, which included the 30 km Cross Country Race, the Four Cross National Championships, and the debuting Cross Country Marathon National Championships. Celebrities including Oyo Sotto (whose Victorious One organization partnered with NUVALI for Dirt Weekend) and Ryan Agoncillo, as well as our own international award-winning mountain biker Parabanne Mendoza, were also part of the action. True to its reputation as a trailblazer, Dirt Weekend 2014 set another record as it hosted the first UCI National Championships for Cross Country Marathon (80 km). It was a test event for the UCI World Series for Cross Country Marathon which will be part of next year's
Dirt Weekend slate, which will in turn be the qualifier round for the 2016 Cross Country Marathon World Championship. “The 80 km Cross Country Marathon was a show of endurance,” says Tena Beltran, event partner of NUVALI for Dirt Weekend 2014. “The number of participants comprised the serious racers, while those who participated in the 30 km Cross Country Race was a mixture of pro racers, serious riders, weekend warriors and racing club members.” One of the two events when Dirt Weekend started in 2008, the Dirt Weekend 30 km Cross Country Race offered a challenging hilly trail and welcomed not only racers, but weekend warriors and biking enthusiasts as well. Divided into categories based on age groups, the top 10 riders in each category were awarded with cash prizes for the top three and a finisher’s medal for all finishers. The Four Cross Race, another Dirt Weekend staple event, once again provided action-packed scenes from riders who sped through the jumps of the four cross tracks. Four riders at a time raced through the tracks with the first two finishers advancing to the next, until riders were eliminated and the last four standing moved on to the Big Final.
The most highly-anticipated centerpiece of this year’s Dirt Weekend event was the National Championships for Cross Country Marathon (XCM). After Dirt Weekend hosted the first ever UCI-sanctioned National Championships last year, it brought in races that matter to cyclists vying for a title and the UCI points. Open strictly to riders 19 years old and above under Women Elite and Men Elite categories, two laps of the 40 km NUVALI bike trail make up for the required minimum distance of 80 km for a National Championship XCM event. Up for grabs were XCM National Jerseys for the top Elite male and female finishers and finisher’s medals for all finishers. At its heart, the annual NUVALI Dirt Weekend event is a perfect opportunity for racers and hobbyists to focus on a passion characterized by speed, thrill and adventure and have a first-hand experience of the NUVALI eco-community’s open spaces, accessibility, safety, inviting amenities, scenic bike trails and challenging terrain. Where nature and adventure meet in an exciting confluence, NUVALI and the Dirt Weekend meets will continue to thrive.
2014 1210 MultiSport Dec.indd 13
There was a race for everyone at the Dirt Weekend, whether they were elite cyclists or bike enthusiasts.
The race course that weekend spanned NUVALI's wide roads and the lush foliage of the mountain bike trails.
Celebrity and bike fanatic Oyo Sotto's group, Victorious One, was behind the success of this year's event.

T R A I N I N G MULTISPORT Strategically schedule your workouts Christmas parties are almost always scheduled in the evening. Instead of going right after work, squeeze in a short but quality workout before proceeding to the venue. Guests are almost always late anyway, so by the time you get there, chances are the party is just getting started and dinner just about ready to be served. And the best time to enjoy a hearty meal with the least amount of guilt is right after a solid workout. The post-workout calories you burned go into your calorie bank and allow you to maintain your weight as long as you don't consume more calories than you burned. Indulge in moderation The temptation to eat calorie-dense food and drinks is inevitable during holiday festivities. The sooner you accept this, the more you can control your intake without depriving yourself. Knowing that you are training for a race makes this challenge more manageable because it's a constant reminder to enjoy each bite of that cake and each sip of that wine with an upcoming hard session in mind. Feeling bloated, nursing a hangover, and working out the next morning are no fun. And bear in mind that trisuits are absolutely unforgiving when it comes to hiding muffin tops due to holiday weight-gain. Choose exercise-friendly destinations and accommodations Scheduling a holiday trip doesn't have to be an
unnecessary disruption in training. Plan ahead and find a travel destination by the beach, with a hotel pool, or with places where you can run and walk. If you prefer the city, make sure it's runner-friendly or at least has a
“Plan ahead and find a travel destination by the beach, with a hotel pool, or with places where you can run and walk. If you prefer the city, make sure it's runner-friendly or at least has a park nearby. park nearby. Search online for bike rentals in the area or meet up with a cyclist friend in your destination who can take you around his usual routes. If safety is a concern, booking a hotel with a gym, complete with treadmill and stationary bike, is the most convenient way to stay on track with your training.
Bring easy-to-pack training gear Packing your bike might not be the most practical option when traveling on vacation but there's no excuse not to bring lightweight training gear such as your swim cap, goggles, swimsuit, running shoes, and workout clothes. You can go for an open-water swim when you head out to the beach and running apparel can double as comfortable walking attire when you go sightseeing. Have a plan but be flexible Holidays are meant to be enjoyed with family and friends but balance is key when you need to include training sessions in the mix. It's good to have a training plan to follow leading up to a race but be open to rearranging your weekly workouts. Schedule longer workouts or those that require you to wake up early in the morning when you don't have a party the night before. If you're really pressed for time, skip the short recovery sessions and prioritize bricks, quality sessions, and long aerobic workouts when your schedule permits. Training for a triathlon already requires a lot of self-discipline but sticking to your plan while being surrounded by so much holiday temptation poses an even tougher challenge. It's not easy but with the right mind-set and commitment, it's also not impossible. So enjoy the most wonderful time of the year but not at the expense of your active lifestyle. As the saying goes, "if there's a will, there's a way."

The Girls of Gran Fondo Baler 2014 at the 60km turnaround point. It’s always refreshing to see women cycling with a pack of men. Riding the same distance, we may not be as fast, but at least we are trying our best to keep up.
90 to 100 riders strong at Costa Pacifica!
Typing this while on the road heading back to Manila, a day fresh and all sorts of sore from that glorious 160km ride. Satisfaction, gratitude, and emotions are still overflowing from that very fulfilling weekend that was Gran Fondo Baler by Fondo Manila. I love Baler. I frequent this province during summer or whenever there’s a chance to surf, and it has never failed to surprise me. Hearing about Fondo Manila cooking up a ride here several months ago, I couldn’t help but get excited. What could be better
than doing two of the best things I really enjoy? So along with my Pinoy Fitness teammates, off we go! Initially, my teammates and I just registered for the 120km ride. But somewhere along the briefing and distribution of kits, some of us decided to take a leap of faith and braved to do the full 160km ride. We started rolling out at 4:30am from Costa Pacifica trying to catch the sunrise; pitch black in some parts of the route, which made it more exciting.
Since my teammates and I were all Fondo first timers, we didn’t really know what to expect. We somehow ended up behind the pack. I guess most of us were trying to appreciate the surroundings and breathe everything in. It’s something different from doing a triathlon race where we don’t really need to be cautious of the time. Luckily, there were cyclists and SAG (support and gear) team who made sure each and every one makes it back in one piece.

OVER THE HILLS YOU GO PEAKS AND SLOPES DON’T HAVE TO BE AN UPHILL BATTLE. DOMINATE CHALLENGE SUBIC’S CHALLENGING BIKE COURSE WITH THESE TIPS By Francis Diano | Photo by Ben Chan Straighten Up In an effort to keep stable, you may feel the need to weave from side to side when riding uphill. Avoid expending more energy and unnecessarily covering more ground by traveling in a straight line. Keeping balanced while ascending is simply dependent on maintaining an equal amount of power on each leg. Get in Gear Shifting is subjective; each rider has his own comfort zone. Climbing a hill is not the time to experiment or push beyond what you trained for. General rules to follow: Use your small ring for larger efforts (like during a steep slope) and the big ring for speed during the descent. Avoid cross chaining—it may be tempting to use the small gear on the smallest cassette but this results in a power loss and increases the strain on the bike chain, disrupting the rhythm of your pedal stroke. Refuel When anticipating a strenuous leg, triathletes often forget their nutrition and hydration. Whether gel packs or energy cubes, consume your fuel of choice five to 15 minutes before approaching a climb. Not only will they replenish your muscles, but the glycogen will give you an extra boost to
22

power through. Follow with water instead of a sports drink—while a dose of sugar is strategic, an excessive amount will dull your energy level.
“Go at your own pace. One of the worst things you can do is to speed up to keep up. ” Keep a Beat Practice a consistent cadence. Jerking, stopping, or slowing down mid-revolution results in a loss of intensity and momentum. A smooth pushing and pulling of your legs will maximize efficiency. While it may be difficult to keep a steady rhythm once you are on the incline, synchronizing your breathing with your pedal strokes will help you maintain tempo. Sit Down Learn how to hammer down while seated. Getting off the saddle to gain leverage on a steep portion may be warranted sometimes, but getting used to doing so
results in an increased burnout rate on your muscles. Staying on your seat is aerodynamic, limiting the drag of oncoming wind. Take it Easy Go at your own pace. One of the worst things you can do is to speed up to keep up. Again, breathing is your best friend. Most riders only utilize the top portion of their lungs with shallow, panting breaths. Instead, use the primary muscle for inspiration—the diaphragm—by taking deep, controlled breaths. Exhale as you go through your pedal stroke, releasing the pressure buildup to relax you during the climb. Don’t forget that the strength of your run is dependent on the performance on your bike. Preserving energy and power is essential to finishing the race strong.

STABILITY HAS NEVER BEEN FASTER The 18th version of the beloved workhorse delivers stability and performance that are unshakeable at high speeds
Strength and growth come from continuous effort — but growing up doesn’t have to mean slowing down, as proven by the new, revolutionary

Nike Air Zoom Structure 18. Nike Air Zoom Structure’s 18th version raises the bar for a running shoe that delivers both speed and stability.
Over the last few decades, Nike designers have debunked the notion that stable means slow. They’ve constantly pushed to make the Nike Structure shoe lighter, smoother and more responsive without sacrificing any of its vaunted stability features. The design of the Structure 18 is a quantum leap from past versions where designers revolutioned it from top to bottom. The Nike team worked closely with elite athletes such as 10,000m silver medalist Galen Rupp and 3,000m world junior champion Mary Cain for insights to bring the distinctive shoe across the finish line. Rupp, who runs nearly all of his 120 miles per week in the Nike Structure, said the Structure 18 gives him a more stable ride and feels faster all the way through his runs.
The Nike Air Zoom Structure 18 delivers uncompromising stability through the combination of an upper featuring Asymetrical Dynamic Flywire and a tripledensity Dynamic Support system in the midsole. The new contoured last — created to provide a better fit and more responsive ride — combined with Nike Zoom Air cushioning, provides added toe spring for the snappy, quick-offthe-ground feel athletes expect from Nike Zoom Air. “We designed the Zoom Air collection to be a revolution in speed,” said Rob Dolan, Nike VP and Creative Director, Footwear. “Whether athletes are racing or training, they repeatedly ask for Zoom Air because they love that fast, snappy, responsive ride and the energy return they get from it.”

Held on a cool, rainy morning last Nov. 9, around 5,500 runners came out to the tried-and-true course at the Bonifacio Global City to test themselves in the event’s 10K, 16K, and 25K races. Gerard Sabal, Ryan Maranan, and Joseph Odhuno were the top three male finishers in the 10K, coming in within minutes of each other. Jaro Cellie and Luisa Raterta followed shortly after to top the female category. Elphiz Kiptarus, Jackson Chirchir, and Eliud Kering won the 16K for 01 02
the males, while Criselyn Jaro, Janette Lumidao, and Jaro Cynthia dominated the females. For the 25K, Melly Alex, Rafael Poliquit, and John Samoqi finished ahead of the males, while Irene Kipchumba, Cinderella Lorenzo, and Ailene Tolentino topped the female category. 01
Celebrity runners Erwan Heussaff, Anne Curtis, Gwen Zamora, Bianca King, Rhian Ramos, and Kim Atienza among others, also participated in the different races. The New Balance Power Run 2014 was made possible by race organizer Runrio, and partners UNILAB Active Health, Gatorade, Timex, Century Tuna, Milo, 2XU, and Devant.
It turned out to be one of the best races of the year despite the rain. The Power Run featured a variety of runners from celebrity athletes to running prodigies.

Held last Nov. 30, the groundbreaking race—also known as the Bi3—gave the participants a unique opportunity to view the beautifully reconstructed heritage houses of Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar as they ran through streets filled with rich history. Participants had two races to choose from—the Rapido, a shorter sprint category, and the Largo, the full-distance triathlon. Adults also had the option of racing solo, joining a relay, or racing the entire course along with a friend in the Amigos category. Kids were not excluded from the festivities as well, as a junior aquathlon was also held the day before.

Australian pro triathlete Ben Allen and British female pro Jacqui Slack dominated the Largo in their respective
categories, while Filipino Elite Nikko Huelgas crossed the finish line way before everyone else in winning the Rapido category. Swimming through the waters of the Las Casas beach front was the calm before the storm as athletes had to negotiate running on cobblestones that led the way to the transition area. But it was the notoriously hilly bike course towards the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant and run course along Mt. Mariveles that separated the seasoned athletes from the newbies. A number of participants had no other recourse but to dismount and push their bikes up the steep sections of the course.

The New Balance Power Run returned in full force for this year’s iteration, challenging runners from all over the metro to break through their limits and finish strong.
Those who made it to the finish line were greeted by colorful banderitas, festive music, and cheerful spectators and fellow participants along the final stretch towards a finish arc made of bamboo—a flavorful setup intended to commemorate Filipino heritage.
