EDITOR’S NOTE Write of Passage Southern Living magazine has been entering the homes of the metro South for more than seven years. And it’s about time that we give it a new face and a much clearer direction in terms of whom we are speaking to and giving voice to: the southern community. You may have noticed that we have transitioned to recycled paper as we approach our readers with a more sustainable and environment-friendly mindset. Food, photography, fashion, home, and people are significant subjects in the editorial mix of this issue, but with a spin on travel. You will

read in these pages stories about proper care and treatment for your skin and feet while in transit, while those clueless about what to pack will find our travel essentials guide most helpful. This month’s cover, Anna Frumenti, proclaims herself to be a daughter of the sun, as she talks about her favorite idyllic destinations. When one thinks of travel, it’s always the farthest, highest, and most exotic places around the world, but in hindsight, adventures can start in as near as your backyard—so make your own cocktail drink and soak in the sun.

TRAVEL MEDITATION

it back to that state of youth and comfort. Find space in your pre-travel schedule and in your vacation itinerary to tune into your body and breath, and in turn, allow your practice of yoga to help you make the most of your vacation.

TEXT CHINGGAY LABRADOR

Breath and Mind. Manage your restlessness by focusing on your inhales and exhales. If you’re a nervous flier or are getting queasy from that short boat ride, try taking 10 to 20 minutes for some “pranayama” exercises that can allow your thoughts to settle and still themselves. • Three-part breathing. Count your inhales from one to three, inhaling from the belly and allowing the breath to rise up to the lungs. Pause before exhaling fully, counting one to three again. Repeat several times with the eyes closed. • Two-one breathing. Once you’ve found a steady rhythm with the breath, try exhaling for as twice as long as you inhale. • A guided meditation CD, app, or podcast can give you something to think about as you slowly learn to decompress.

Stay grounded as you sail, soar or steer towards your summer destination ILLUSTRATION BN CHAVEZ

Taking time out to escape the daily grind and relish the season of sand and sun may seem idyllic, but trips can also put strain on both the body and mind. Making arrangements, covering logistics, and ensuring that everything at home runs smoothly while you’re away can certainly induce anxiety. And whether you’re travelling in a cramped economy seat or rolling through a rocky bus ride for hours on end, taking a break can also subject the body to stress, leaving you with less time and energy to really vacate the hassles of everyday life. A well-rounded yoga practice that involves “pranayama” or breath work, “asana” or physical postures, and meditation or sitting still, can give you the tools you need to get your mind and body prepped for all the fun (and sometimes inevitable setbacks) that come with going on vacation. A daily practice—whether it means going to a vinyasa flow studio class or meditating to clear your mind—gives the body the tune-up it needs and gets your mind ready to turn inward and calm down, especially when stress levels increase. Incorporating this daily practice even while you’re away gives you access to that much-needed steady space, allowing you to fully enjoy and relish your travel time. “Yoga teaches us how to be present with whatever’s going on without turning it into a stressful situation, without turning on the stress hormones—that idea of fight or freeze. When anything challenging comes into your life—whether it’s a challenging pose, a challenging moment with your partner or at work—you don’t end up flooding the body with hormones that turn the body into a factory for inflammation,” says Annie Carpenter, LA-based SmartFLOW yoga teacher and part of Urban Ashram Manila’s international faculty. It’s the inflammation in the joints and the brain that makes us age and causes discomfort—and revitalizing the body with a physical yoga practice, allowing it to rejuvenate through the breath and through the stillness, brings

Body. Keep your spine healthy and your body supple with these poses you can practice in an airplane seat, on the sand, or even in your hotel room. • “Parivrtta Sukhasana” (Seated Twist). Sit tall with your legs comfortably crossed. As you inhale, lengthen out your lower back as you place your left hand on your right knee. As you release the breath, use the left hand as a lever to help you turn your entire rib cage to the right. Repeat on the other side. • Lateral Standing Stretch. Inhale while reaching your right arm up and lengthening both sides of the waist. Exhale, bending to the left from your waist and stretching the side of the torso. Avoid bringing your shoulders to your ears and keep the chest squared to the front. Stay in that position for five breaths and release as you exhale. Repeat on the other side. • “Gomukhasana” (Cow Face Arms) with “Tadasana” Legs. Standing tall, bring your arms out to a T. Bring the right arm up, bend at the elbow keeping it pointed forward and reach your hand towards the nape of your neck. Rotate your left thumb down. Slowly bend your left elbow and bring the arm behind your back, with the top of your hand reaching the middle upper back. Clasp your fingers together or use a towel if they can’t reach each other. Keep the shoulders level while pressing your shoulder blades in towards your chest as you soften the front ribs. Stay here for a few breaths and slowly release. Repeat on the other side.

Bring life to your space with terrariums that make good conversation pieces. Succulents require minimal care and attention.

INDOOR GARDENING

Succulents, like cacti, do not require frequent watering or attention. Consider them no-fuss companions.

Own a little piece of paradise with a desert terrarium TEXT KAT PATIÑO-MARQUEZ PHOTOGRAPHY JILSON SECKLER TIU

Terrariums are making a huge comeback. But gone are the Jurassic aquarium terrariums of our mothers and fathers. Instead, this home décor trend is making a revival—now showing off a modern, more space-efficient look. Encased in sleek fishbowls, these mini landscapes are making a place for themselves in more contemporary homes. These are great additions to a space that lacks plant life. And it has been proven to improve the quality of air in the home. Terrariums are perfect even for the worst of gardeners—needing only minimal attention. Terrariums have now become even more interesting with the addition of an overwhelming number of creative designs. You can find these pocket gardens in anything from wine bottles, mason jars, geometric cases, and even lightbulbs. And now, more are creating their own terrariums for their homes. But if DIY gardening isn’t your thing, Space Garden’s terrariums are ready-made to add

that touch of greenery in your home. Ideal for condominiums and apartments, these little plants are perfect accent pieces to brighten up any space. Space Garden’s terrariums don’t require a green thumb as they are easy to care for: low-maintenance and non-toxic. They only require watering a couple times a week. Created by Martin Lazano, this indoor gardening venture helps busy individuals own a garden without the hassle of caring for it daily. Space Garden’s terrariums come in two varieties. The air plant terrariums require no soil while the cactus ones do—both beautiful and require the same care. Choose from different designs and sizes that suit your liking. Always have the view of the ocean with you with the beach-themed terrariums, decorated with seashells, sand, and coral. If the desert is more your thing, you can get an all-cactus one. You can even have one fully customized. Price starts at P600 for these green beauties.

BEAUT Y

WALKING ON SUNSHINE

Great summer adventures start with healthy, pampered feet TEXT SEP MAHINO ILLUSTRATION BN CHAVEZ There are beautifully formed feet, and there are those that look like flowering bulbs of ginger. Still, aesthetics take nothing away from the great, daily work that our feet do for us—carrying us, our whole weight, and all the baggage we tote to wherever we go. When we talk about travel, images of planes jetting off to exotic locales or a car full of friends breezing down the expressway immediately come to mind. Yet, every day we travel, one footstep after another, from one destination to the next. As the popular adage goes, every journey begins with a single step, but that would be hard to follow with another one once you encounter pain and other kinds of problems with your feet. Hence, for your summer sojourns, whether it’s a transatlantic flight to some cosmopolitan European capital or a backpacking trek through lush local trails, keeping mindful of the health needs of your feet becomes all the more important. They don’t really require anything special by way of care: A hygienic routine of washing them daily with water and mild soap, thorough drying especially between the toes, and applying moisturizing cream especially on the heels is always the best form of defense against skin problems that afflict the feet, such as fungal infections and dry, cracked skin. Regular pedicures and nail trimming done by trusted and capable technicians can prevent ingrown nails. Foot spas and massages do a world of good in invigorating blood circulation, and so does giving your feet a break from constant wearing of high heels. There’s a specific pre-travel to-do list, though: Once you get down to paring your whole beauty ritual into TSA-approved sizes, don’t forget to

pack for your feet, too. Aside from a moisturizing cream, a cuticle balm, and maybe a deodorizing foot spray—this is more for the sake of your bunkmates—pack a few sachets of bath salts so you can give your feet a nice, warm soak at the end of a day’s sightseeing. It would also be a good idea to prepare a foot care kit for emergency cases: bandages, a nail file, nail clippers, cooling foot lotion, and antibiotic cream. In planning your plane outfit, think of comfort—especially if it’s going to be a long flight. Foot and leg swelling is a common condition during air travel due to inactivity, the constant seated position, low cabin pressure, low humidity, and dehydration. Reduce the risk by not wearing tight clothing, particularly those that cinch at the waist; you can always change into something more stylish in the cabin restroom before touchdown. When you’re finally up in the air or on the road, keep yourself hydrated and stretch your legs and ankles every hour; if it’s possible, take a short walk to get the blood in your legs and feet circulating back to the heart. If short walks aren’t possible, do ankle rotations by drawing circles with your toes, and keep the legs and feet elevated as much as you can. Sure, you’d look strange in your seat but your lower extremities will thank you for it. The footwear you’ll use during travel is also an important consideration. The smart thing is to stick to shoes that you’ve proven to be comfortable and provide proper arch and heel support instead of ones that you’ve yet to break in. Ballet flats and flip-flops don’t make for trusty travel shoes, as despite the flatheeled comfort they give, they offer absolutely zero support to the feet—you’ll just find yourself groaning in pain after a day spent walking around.

EMPIRE OF THE SUN

Beach babe Anna Frumenti takes us through her sunny worldview

TEXT KATRINA RAMOS ATIENZA PHOTOGRAPHY RALPH MENDOZA

“Candid. Restless. Strong.” These are the words Anna Frumenti picks to describe herself, and it’s not hard to see how they apply. As part of the Nothing But H20 team, Anna handles iconic shoe brand Toms and homegrown swimsuit label Anemone—brands whose values she shares. “Toms is a brand that cares. It’s so refreshing because it’s built on philanthropy and it’s genuine—not a marketing trick,” she shares. “The other brand I handle, Anemone, is one of a kind. It’s drawn, designed, and created exclusively for the brand. Nothing is off-the-rack: Fabrics, prints, embellishments, and even the colors are made for each collection.” Though her day job keeps her extremely busy—she does everything from handling events to preparing press kits and attending shoots—it is a fortuitous marriage between her interests (fashion, apparel) and passions (the beach, the outdoors, and an active lifestyle.) Anna sat down with the Southern Living team to talk about her work, how she unwinds, and her most unforgettable travel experiences. What projects are you busy with right now? For Toms, we’re launching a lot of new styles, such as women’s sandals, men’s mid-cut slip-ons and even brogues. We’re also excited about the annual One Day Without Shoes this April. Versus previous years, this one will be bigger and better, with a really cool series of events planned with Alabang Town Center. It’s kicking off this summer on March 29. How do you unwind? Watching old Friends episodes with a cold bottle of beer. Sitting in the sun reading my books—I love the smell of books, and e-readers can’t really compare. Backyard barbecues with the family. Driving out of the city and for fresh air and to do anything where I can relax and spend time outdoors.

together outfits. But my style has changed over the years. Now my style really reflects who I am: simple and effortless but always with an interesting point and a touch of skin. I always go for relaxed fit and pieces I can throw on any day. White shirts, shift dresses, pullovers in particular. I like to use what keeps me comfortable, because comfort inspires confidence and confidence is sexy. What are your favorite travel destinations? Food: Singapore, Thailand... any Asian country with spicy food. Mmm, curry! People: New York. Try getting bored in that city, it can’t be done. Beach: El Nido. Those lagoons. Paradise. Way of Life: I love Italy! Wine, cheese, tomatoes; hand movements, boisterous behavior; Italians love life!

“Do things yourself. Don’t join a tour or get a package. You’ll find that things get more interesting that way. You’ll make mistakes along the way, get lost; but this is where the unforgettable happens. This spontaneity turns into the stories that we tell.”

You recently got an M6 and took up film photography. What attracted you to the medium? Shooting on film excites me. It’s more work than digital but it’s so worth it. It’s all about capturing moments, expressions, light. Telling a story, or guessing a stranger’s story. In our world, sometimes it’s a challenge to find those things that stay true. You look at photos and think, “Well, isn’t this just Photoshop?” Film takes something in its original and pure form and appreciates it for just that. Raw authenticity. I like that and I appreciate that. Talk about #nofilter! (Follow her on annafrumenti.tumblr.com to view her photos.) Do you have a beauty and fitness routine? I really need to keep my cleansing routine on point. I have oily skin so it goes wild if I’m careless. Other than that, I don’t really wear any makeup on a daily basis. Most days I’ll fix my eyebrows and put on lip balm. Lipstick on some days. Hair regimen? Non-existent. Fitness-wise, I’ve always been an active person so when I don’t get in exercise, I end up feeling… bleh. I played football for DLSU in college and I still play nowadays, sometimes just futsal. Otherwise, I blast my music and dance alone in my room. Serious! It’s great exercise. Describe your sense of style. Since the days of elephant pants and jelly sandals, I’ve always loved putting

Where are you planning to visit this summer? I’m heading up to Kalinga to see Fang-Od! I definitely want to start giving back more this year. I’ve just recently been bothered that I haven’t been helping out as much as I can. I guess everyone wants to change the world; everyone wants to make a difference. Rightly so, because God knows this world needs help. What do you pack when you travel? M6 camera, rolls of film, extra batteries—those are my essentials. And then sunblock, lip balm, shades, notebook, and pen in a small backpack Key travel tip? Do things yourself. Don’t join a tour or get a package. You’ll find that things get more interesting that way. You’ll make mistakes along the way, get lost; but this is where the unforgettable happens. This spontaneity turns into the stories that we tell.

Favorite travel stories? Hiking in the north of Sagada. I move fast when I hike, almost running, and you need to concentrate on the next steps so you don’t trip and fall. At one point I realized it was dead silent. So I slowed down and looked up: I was in the middle of the most beautiful rice terraces. They seemed to be enveloping me, stretching on and on in the distance, so peaceful, so serene. I couldn’t believe I was just standing there like it was no big deal! Exploring in San Francisco and chancing upon a hill overlooking the entire city during a full moon. Getting lost around Northern California and finding a beautiful strawberry farm in the middle of nowhere. Sunrise at Jingshan Park, seeing the light through the trees and hearing communities singing their childhood songs. This is a favorite: I woke up at 5 a.m. in the Tuscan countryside. This was surreal: I was up in a mountain in Italy, surrounded by these beautiful trees, overlooking the sleeping city of Florence—a city that’s been there since something BC. I was alone, watching the sun rise in a new place, and then seeing a strange city wake up. I remember thinking, “How is it even possible to take in a moment so beautiful?” Once you experience that moment, it’s already passed, never to be again. I guess that’s what makes life so beautiful: those transient moments that make you feel alive. I would say my favorite travel experiences are those moments when I felt God most. In those moments I felt Him all around me and in me. My soul felt grateful to be alive and living. That’s what I try to feel every day.

Pink Panda emerges with a quiet yin and yang of vivid flavors in a bustling city (above). The restaurant offers familiar Southeast Asian dishes (below), but infused with a modern twist.

A WORLD OF FLAVORS

At Pink Panda, it’s Southeast Asia on a plate TEXT SEP MAHINO PHOTOGRAPHY ARLO ANGELES AND JILSON SECKLER TIU

PINK PANDA

The newly opened Pink Panda is all about contrasting and layering elements: wood with metal, black with white, darkness with light, yin with yang. And why not? With Southeast Asia as its culinary reference, this diner understands that the unexpected and the diverse are its main hooks for hungry people looking for something different. Of course, there are the dishes that we’ve known most of our lives. Pink Panda has traditional favorites such as dumplings, pork buns, spring rolls, sates, noodles, spare ribs, and stir-fried vegetables, the better to ease the notso-adventurous into the kind of flavors in store for them. But those who go for dishes that are unlike what is usually found in the city are in for a different kind of treat as the mix of flavors and textures are complex in every bite. They’re not just delicious but also exciting. The Duo Indo salad, for example, is two dishes in one, each with its own flavor profile: the Gado Gado

salad (cherry tomatoes, bean sprouts, green beans, cabbage, tofu, boiled egg, chili pepper and crushed peanuts) with peanut sauce is sweet and earthy while the salad of tropical fruits drenched in tamarind-based Rujak dressing is sweet and tart. Great on their own, they’re even better when mixed together. Another exciting combination is freshwater prawns coated with sauce made from Pateros salted egg and coconut milk. Yes, the Salted Egg Prawns is as rich as it sounds, and sucking on the prawn heads to extract more of that creamy and briny mix could prove hard to resist. Located near bustling Makati Avenue, Pink Panda is a sure draw for foreigners in search of that “exotic” Southeast Asian dining experience, but locals already inured to cultural chaos could rediscover the sensorial attack that the region’s diverse cuisines deliver. Even with its name, the restaurant promises to shake things up.

EATS Marmalade Kitchen whips up new flavors on comfort food while maintaining the taste of the familiar.

EASY DELICIOUS

Eating at Marmalade Kitchen feels like coming home TEXT SEP MAHINO PHOTOGRAPHY JILSON SECKLER TIU

MARMALADE KITCHEN

It would be misleading to describe Marmalade Kitchen’s offerings as “homestyle cooking” because, let’s be honest, very few of us get to eat like this at home: thick, sour, and comforting tomato soup; creamy penne pesto; crispy and succulent fried chicken; and a warm, fudgy cake topped with vanilla ice cream. We could only be so lucky to have dishes as deliciously indulgent as these made right out of our own kitchens. But that is why Marmalade Kitchen is here. Aileen Anastacio’s latest, recently opened venture is founded on the virtues of comfort eating. The familiar yet rich flavors, a warm ambiance, the sense of contentment at the end of the meal, and the timeless appeal of the whole experience already draw in diners ‘round the clock, just as she had envisioned. She says, “I wanted people to come in and feel right at home.” Yet the homey appeal and the tasty food, as easy as they are on the senses, were results of constant planning and tweaking. Much like how family matriarchs develop heirloom recipes through trial and error, Aileen has also been constantly experimenting with food, figuring out which available ingredients would bring out the best in each dish. “Even though the steps and ingredients are outlined, every dish won’t be the same realistically; it changes depending on who prepared it. The goal then is to make each one fulfill a

standard so that every customer leaves satisfied.” Even the look and the name of the place are no casual accidents but rather results of deliberate planning: “Marmalade Kitchen” had been playing around in Anastacio’s mind for the past five years already, the sense of homemade sweetness in the combination of words fitting right in with her vision. Complementing the name is the place’s country-style design, combining textured wood and aged brick with tufted sofas, wrought iron décor, and unconventional but fun lighting fixtures. With recipe books, packaged coils of dried pasta, and jars of ready-made salad dressings and jams lining the display shelves, Marmalade Kitchen looks quite like the family country home of our dreams. The dream is bigger than just a restaurant, though. Marmalade Kitchen has a kitchen studio where three-hour cooking classes are held every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aileen herself conducting them; it’s common for diners to receive complimentary freshly baked pastry pieces after a class is done, courtesy of the students. “I want people to leave not just full but also knowing how to cook the food they enjoyed here,” Aileen says. Much like our ideal of the perfect home-cooked meal, Marmalade Kitchen’s cooking is just too good not to share.

Ingredients

1 cup homemade calamancello (recipe below) or Manille Calamansi liquor ¾ cup gin ½ cup fresh calamansi juice 12 paper-thin calamansi slices Ice 1 cup club soda, chilled 4 mint sprigs

CALAMANCELLO COLLINS Servings: 4 Procedure

1. Combine the calamancello, gin, and lemon juice in a pitcher. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, or at least 2 hours. 2. Press 3 thin calamansi slices against the inside of each of the 4 glasses. Add ice. 3. Stir the calamancello mixture and pour into glasses. 4. Stir ¼ cup of club soda into each drink and garnish with a mint sprig.

Procedure

1. Cut each calamansi in half and squeeze the juice through a sieve and into a bowl. Set aside the calamansi rinds. Discard the seeds and save the calamansi juice for future use. 2. Place the calamansi rinds into a large glass pitcher with a tight lid. Pour vodka over the rinds and cover the pitcher with the lid. Allow to steep for at least 30 days at room temperature. 3. After the steeping period, combine the water and sugar in a medium-sized saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil and stir until sugar has dissolved. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow syrup to cool completely. 4. Pour the cooled syrup into the calamansi mixture. Cover and steep for 1 more week at room temperature. 5. Strain the mixture into a large bowl through a fine mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth. Press down on the rinds in the sieve to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the calamansi rinds. Transfer the calamancello to clean glass bottles and store in fridge.

T HE GET

THE LITTLE THINGS

Simple pleasures come in small packages TEXT DIANNE PINEDA PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKO NUYDA

With a single flicker, vanilla top notes start mingling in the air, transporting one to a calm, relaxed state of mind, subtly easing away all of the day’s worries and stress. It’s hard to believe that this almost therapeutic experience, one up to par with a long, hot bath or a warm cup of chocolate on a rainy day, can come from a small scented candle. Such simple pleasures are not only part of Macky Fah’s rituals after a long day, but have also become a passion project that grew into a family business. “There’s a certain enjoyment I get from lighting one and smelling its yummy scent,” Macky says. Aside from candles, Macky also handmakes soaps using all-natural and gentle ingredients, which she specifically developed for her daughter who has skin allergies. FäE soaps are perfect for those who are looking for something gentle on the skin, as these are made with plant-derived ingredients, premium coconut oil, purified water, and organic essences. The candles are made with beeswax and produce smokeless flames, staying true to Macky’s idea of making environment-friendly and hypoallergenic products. Scents of the candles include the minty fresh Winter’s Evening (pine, eucalyptus, nutmeg, and peppermint), the fruity and flowery Wistful (peach, citrus, and coconut), the fresh Riverbank (basil, dayap, and carnation) and the rich Silvergil (almond, vanilla, amber, and pomegranate). With all its organic essences and natural features, it was only apt that Macky’s husband named the product FäE, which means fairy—a fitting image to the product’s delicate and subtle features. As Macky tells it, “Every FäE product is lovingly handcrafted, from the pouring of the candlewax and the cutting of the soap to the packaging, which is made from earth-friendly and recyclable materials.”
