EDITOR’S NOTE

Spark Joy KonMari has evolved from a simple decluttering method to a worldwide lifehack phenomenon. But her philosophy of keeping only the things that spark joy is something we can apply to life in general. Our first issue this year takes a different approach from the Southern Living you might’ve gotten used to. This is in hopes that we continue to create something you can keep—something that will always spark joy. Our neighborhood guides, which feature new and interesting finds all over the city, should be handy for updates on what’s cool now. Our Eats section, meanwhile, still takes you to our new favorite restaurants in town, but this time we’ve added a few more “food-spirations.” In this issue, Two Chickpeas, a falafel-focused restaurant in Salcedo, got us wondering where else we can get good vegetarian-friendly food in the south and how we can include these in our meals at home. We also get to know more about Southerner Martine Ho through snapshots of her new home. If, like Martine, you’re looking to redesign or move into a new space, we’ve also listed ways on how you can make the move friendlier on the planet, and how to make decluttering spark more joy through donations.

3 “Are our children prepared to think and focus for success in 21st century life?” Whether we’re handling a three-year-old or a 13-year-old, this question posed in The Power of Prime by psychologist and author Jim Taylor should keep us pondering every time we find ourselves struggling to learn something new. We are at the time when technology is emerging at its fastest pace: Artificial intelligence is evolving; touch commerce is leading the markets; careers are diversifying; and cars are driving themselves. New information is going to keep bombarding not only us, adults, but our children as well. While the advancement benefits us in many ways, it also opens up challenges to our children’s future, including how they will gain employment, says Andy Puttock, Director of Education at Nord Anglia Education (NAE), world’s leading premium schools organization. “The jobs of tomorrow will be very different to the ones we have today.”

Educators at NAE suggest that students should be provided with personalized learning experiences where machine and human intelligence use are maximized. As part of their teaching process, NAE teachers tailor their approach to suit the students’ interest in particular fields (which can be cultural, environmental, athletic, and artistic, among others). It would cultivate both hard and soft skill sets, they said. Established in the UK in 1972, NAE has employed this teaching process to over 53,000 students in 56 schools across 27 countries. NAE has exclusive collaborations with leading organizations like Juilliard, MIT, King’s College London and UNICEF to give their students global exposure and opportunities. NAE schools are found in the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Asia, including the Philippines. They are offering pre-school to high school education. Find out more about them at www.nordangliaeducation.com.

To help children keep up, schools should gradually introduce them to the advancements in a way that won’t overwhelm them.

WEAR THE SKIRT March is National Women’s Month, a celebration of the huge strides women have made and will continue to make for empowerment. We’ve seen a lot of strong Filipinas since the year started, too: Dr. Honey Carandang, who spoke up against the unjust move to lower the age of criminal liability; Janice Lao-Noche, this year’s Edie Sustainable Leader of the Year; Issa Reyes, the professional organizer in the vein of Marie Kondo; Gaby Tantuico, whose works will be exhibited at the Conception Arts show in New York; and Lui Medina, who curated an exhibit on the fluidity of place at Artinformal Greenhills. In 2018, almost a third of the country’s population engaged in e-commerce, according to the latest We Are Social digital survey. But this doesn’t mean that brick-and-mortar stores are dead. Brands that were once exclusively sold online are finding their way into multi-brand boutiques that highlight homegrown products.

ANG HULING EL BIMBO GOES FOR A VICTORY LAP AT RESORTS WORLD MANILA

The cast and creative team of Ang Huling El Bimbo 2019 with Full House Theater Company’s artistic directors, Michael Stuart Williams and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

TEXT AILEEN MARTIN

It was in September last year that Resorts World Manila broke new ground in Philippine theater with Ang Huling El Bimbo, the criticallyacclaimed, perpetually sold-out original musical featuring beloved songs from the most iconic ‘90s Filipino rock band set to the moving story of four friends and their trials and triumphs. The demand to see the show was so high that despite adding additional show dates to the original run, many theater and music fans were still unable to get tickets. This is why on its 10th year, Resorts World Manila is giving audiences another chance to catch Ang Huling El Bimbo at the Newport Performing Arts Theater from Mar. 1 to Apr. 6. Many of the original cast members will be reprising their roles, including Gian Magdangal, OJ Mariano, Jon Santos, Reb Atadero, Boo Gabunada, Bibo Reyes,

0130_SouthernLiving_Q1.indd 11

Tanya Manalang, and the First Lady of Philippine Theater herself, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo. Joining them is a new set of actors who will bring their own brand of energy to the play—Nicco Manalo, Lance Reblando, David Ezra, Phi Palmos, Myke Salomon, Rafa Siguion-Reyna, Gabriella Pangilinan, and Carla Guevara-Laforteza. Audiences who watched the first run of Ang Huling El Bimbo are guaranteed a fresh experience for the second run with new twists care of Director Dexter Santos, Musical Director Myke Salomon, Associate Director Menchu LauchengcoYulo, Artistic Director Michael Williams, Playwright Dingdong Novenario, Costume Designer Marlon Rivera and the rest of the creative team. The team will also be joined by writer-director extraordinaire Floy Quintos for the second run. “Given the huge success of the first run, we wanted to ensure that the audiences will

still be treated to all the best-loved songs as in the original, save for a few tweaks in aid of a more streamlined storytelling,” says Lauchengco-Yulo. “It’s an even more amazing show now for those who will see it for the first time, and these changes will bring an added dimension of enjoyment for those who have already seen it before.” Special show promotions are available to Resorts World Manila members through the RWM Mobile App which is available for free download via the AppStore or GooglePlay. Guests who are 21 years old and above may avail of free RWM membership to qualify for RWM Mobile App promotions. Tickets to Ang Huling El Bimbo are available at Ticket World (www. ticketworld.com.ph) and the RWM Box Office at GF Newport Mall, Resorts World Manila. PLANT-BASED CUISINE FOR EVERY BUDGET Restaurants in the south with vegan and vegetarian options at every price point TEXT AMIERIELLE ANNE BULAN ILLUSTRATION TRICIA GUEVARA

01

Some people believe that veganism and vegetarianism are only for the wealthy because a plant-based diet is more expensive than an omnivorous diet. But that’s a myth. The glaring difference between what vegetarians and omnivores consume is animal protein. “Animal protein is what makes food prices more expensive,” nutrition professor Loan Kim of California’s Pepperdine University said in a study. This is why you should not be discouraged from embracing a healthier diet just because of the price points. So if you’re thinking of going the veggie route, here are some restaurants for every kind of budget.

0130_SouthernLiving_Q1.indd 18

Vegans vs Vegetarians: What makes them different? Veganism falls under vegetarianism, making the two diets more confusing to distinguish. The key is to remember that vegetarians may consume non-plantbased foods as long as they’re not by-products of slaughter. Vegans, on the other hand, abstain from all kinds of animal products, including dairy, eggs, and gelatin.

SUNNY WITH A CHANCE OF FALAFELS

The flexibility of their falafel pockets and bowls and the variety of toppings is Two Chickpeas’ answer to the “umay” factor.

Green Bar has established itself as a vegetarian and vegan food source in Makati. They have a wide selection for all kinds of eaters who follow these lifestyles—for the junk food junkies, they have fried dishes and donuts, for the “green”-minded, salad bowls and everything in between. And just last year, the owners opened a new concept in Legazpi Village called Two Chickpeas. Two Chickpeas is a cute vegan joint that puts the spotlight on customizable falafel dishes. It caters mostly to those who are on the go (enter their packed falafel pocket),but doesn’t exclude those who want to dine in (say hi to falafel bowls). Just in case you haven’t heard of falafels yet, they’re deep-fried balls made primarily out of dried chickpeas blended with various spices and herbs like cumin and coriander. They originate from the

Middle East. It’s also worth noting that the falafels at Two Chickpeas aren’t overwhelming for those who are trying them for the first time— they’re moist but not soggy, airy and not dense, and they’re kind of sweet, as there are sweet potatoes blended in. Basically, at Two Chickpeas, you get to decide what goes into your dish. The pocket comes with five falafel balls and five toppings. The bowl comes with five balls, too, with romaine lettuce or rice, and five toppings. You can choose from the following: cabbage salad, romaine lettuce, tomato cucumber salad, quinoa salad, pickled basil beets, curried carrots, creamy tahini

cauliflower, sweet potato fries, turmeric rice, tzatziki (a cucumber yogurt dip made from blended plant-based ingredients like tofu instead of yogurt), hummus, and herbed croutons. For those who want to keep it simple, there are readily assembled offerings like the Basic Falafel Pocket, which has five falafel balls, cabbage salad, and tomato cucumber salad in a pita pocket. Gyro Seitan, on the other hand, is Two Chickpeas’ take on shawarma. It’s a flatbread that envelopes seared seitan, French fries, tzatziki, lettuce, and tomato topped with garlic sauce made from soy milk. In line with the ethical and

altruistic foundation of veganism, Two Chickpeas has a mini zerowaste grocery called The Pantry, where buyers are encouraged to bring their own containers and bags. As of writing, they sell various plant-based ingredients like organic chia seeds, nutritional yeast flakes, chickpea flour, and more.

CHECK : GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP From travel, families, and businesses to global mobility TEXT MJ ESTABILLO

A second passport that has access to multiple countries is exciting for Filipino travelers. The repetitive tasks of fixing visas can be scrapped in exchange for longer stays and a more flexible itinerary for travel. However, the application process remains labor-intensive and time consuming with a small chance of approval for those with instability in the home country. While there are different programmes to facilitate the application process, backing and support is necessary. To guarantee ease and results, Harvey Law Group (HLG) can conduct cross-border transactions to more than 20 countries of diverse backgrounds.

0130_SouthernLiving_Q1.indd 23

HLG offers a variety of immigration and investment programmes for the needs of families in foreign countries — from children’s education, real estate and business investments, to donations to the country’s government and infrastructure. In view of an interconnected world, the firm becomes responsible for changing the landscape of families’ wellbeing, global businesses, and the international economy.

A country rich in history and culture like Greece is a possible permanent residence with faster immigration process and real estate investment opportunities.

Having another passport doesn’t have to be aspirational, but the sense of home does feel stronger with one. Canada is an ideal place to live for its multicultural society, advanced health and welfare systems, and high quality education.

A HOME OF ONE’S OWN Martine Ho’s apartment is a study in pink and in space optimization

“When people come over here they’re shocked at how small the space is,” says Martine Ho, creative director of Sunnies, of her Rockwell apartment in between bites of sunny side up eggs and avocado she’s having for breakfast. Decked out in warm hues of pink and vivid greens—thanks to her collection of plants—the 71sq.m. apartment is what she likes to call the “Ho Haus,” a playful iteration based on her husband’s last name. This is despite the fact that she has the whole place all to herself, an investment she had before getting married. “It’s more of how I utilized it and made it bigger by adding functional furniture to widen the space,” she says. The dining area— where one of two paintings by her aunt Isabel Diaz hangs—attests to this. Curved pieces such as an

from Bauhaus to Vitra—and curiously, a pink vase shaped like a phallus. A real conversation-starter, says Martine. This is quite an interesting piece you have here. It’s called the Shiva Vase by Ettore Sottsass, a symbol of his love for a Catalan woman. I saw it while in Milan and knew I needed to find a way to bring it home. People often ask me if I’m aware of what it resembles, to which I reply, “Obviously. I am a grown woman.”

illuminated round mirror and an oval table cut away corners, creating room to breathe. A pink modular Hay Design couch easily catches the eye in the sunlit living room. Martine says it was quite a splurge, together with the framed television, which seamlessly blends in as art into the wall, and the Smeg refrigerator she has recently acquired for her kitchen that’s currently being remodeled. Tomado shelves she handcarried from a vintage store in Barcelona line the walls and brim with books of her design influences

0130_SouthernLiving_Q1.indd 32

We understand that despite the house’s name it’s actually your personal space. Cliff and I share similar views on marriage and togetherness—we both respect each other’s need for space. The vision for my place was never a family home for us or our future kids—although we definitely have dreams of building one, too. This is more of an inspiring space that I could always have for myself.

bright. It has a mix of vintage lamps with sentimental value, a few pieces I lugged over from local furniture designers in Melbourne, and pieces I’ve found throughout my travels and miraculously was able to bring home.

“I joke (but it’s true) that I have a secret bookshelf full of the books about science, post-apocalyptic scenarios, and AI. They just always have terribly bad covers and I can’t bear to display them.”

What was the inspiration for the interiors? I fell in love with the design scene in Milan when I went there last year for Sunnies Face. I wanted the space to feel playful, airy, and

You have a lot of houseplants. How does that influence the overall look of your house? I’m a believer of the biophilia [hypothesis] which suggests that humans innately seek out being around other living things. Also, I can’t have a dog so the commitment I can have at the moment is with plants. In a sense, they’re my pets. I just enjoy looking at them and being around them. It’s just as simple as that. What’s your approach to curation? Are you more of a minimalist or a maximalist? I’m trying to be a minimalist. But I seem to have a serious rug hoarding addiction. I switch them

out quite frequently. I find it such an easy way to change up the vibe and energy of the room depending upon your mood. And I enjoy the craftsmanship that goes into them. Plus, I love the search for finding the perfect one and bringing it home. What are some of the pieces here that you consider valuable? This painting by my Tita Isabel. I grew up with it in my childhood home in Orange County and I remember admiring the colors when I was young. I suppose it inspired me very early on to be drawn to this palette. It moves around a lot because it looks good in every corner. I convinced my mom I needed it in my life and she generously gave it to me.

Where do you usually source your furniture?

I’m an advocate of high and low mixing when it comes to design. Some of my fave high-end stores in Manila are CWC (for all your Eames and Vitra needs) and Casa Bella (for Hay Design). For good cheap finds, I turn to local Japanese surplus stores. I once bought a set of Herman Miller office chairs for P2,000 and an amazing mid-century style couch we still use at Sunnies HQ. I also frequent Craigslist when I’m in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. The Rose Bowl Flea Market is also incredible for furniture finds. In Melbourne, I love going to Smith Street Bazaar.

As someone who’s had to move multiple times in the last two years, I can’t say that the anxiety over losing your things during the move ever leaves. Moving is hard and painful, a strict reconnoiter of all your things before you load them onto a truck. This is why we’ve found some helpful movers that you can conveniently book on your phone. (Bonus perk: all these apps provide real time tracking.)

Lalamove You’ve probably heard of the Hong Kong-based app Lalamove already, albeit in the context of deliveries. It’s a popular app used by online shops and restaurants to quickly send their wares within the day. Lessknown service is their lipat bahay service, which allows customers to pick drivers to move their items.

Transportify Also known as Deliveree in Thailand, where it was founded, the delivery and pickup app acts as a platform for lipat bahay services. Through the app, you can pick what kind of truck you’d like to use (important if you’re wary about things falling out of an open truck) before matching you up with a driver. Aside from the real-time updates on the app, Transportify also sends you text updates on your delivery. You can also be sure that every item is accounted for with their written agreement.

Lalamove is available on the App Store and Google Play.

If there’s something we should’ve learned by now it’s that we should clean and give up things in our house that don’t “spark joy” anymore, all thanks to everyone’s favorite influencer and tidying guru Marie Kondo. But what do you do with all the pre-loved stuff you’ve packed away? Donate them. Here are some organizations that accept used but still decent clothes, furniture, toys, and books.

FRIDGE HACKS How to best optimize your fridge, according to experts

TEXT JILL CHUA ILLUSTRATION TRICIA GUEVARA

While we’re still in the first quarter of the year, it’s time to start thinking about that major house cleanup that you’ve been putting off for a while—starting with the refrigerator. It consumes a big chunk of your electricity bill, only to be home to lots of expired and wasted food. Optimize your biggest energy consuming appliance by keeping your fridge clean and clutter-free with these tips from experts. From a chef For Josh Boutwood, chef and creator of restaurants Helm and Savage, the most crucial tip is to clean and sanitize

0130_SouthernLiving_Q1.indd 47

your fridge daily because it’s those machines that keep food longer. On organizing the fridge, he shares, “ideally, we would want to organize the refrigerator in a manner that suits the flow of the kitchen.” He suggests that food items used more often should be closer to the front than seldom-used items. He also practices labeling the date of the items from the moment they enter fridge so that way, the first-in, first-out method can be applied. Keeping key ingredient groups separated, especially items that may trigger chemical reactions from each other, is also vital to avoid crosscontamination. In his restaurants, he arranges these food groups from top to bottom: ready-to-eat or pre-cooked items and dairy and produce, seafood, processed meat, and poultry. From a food safety officer According to Glenn Dela Cruz of the Food Safety and Hygiene Academy of the Philippines, he recommends maintaining a regular

schedule of deep cleaning for your fridge (both chiller and freezer), including all rubber gaskets where microorganisms inhabit. He also notes that bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella cannot multiply on safe temperatures of five degrees Celsius for chillers and -18 degrees Celsius for freezers so it’s best to keep your fridge at those temperatures. He suggests that all food items must be stored in covered containers with an appropriate label to monitor expiration dates. Segregate food items by storing them according to hierarchy, starting from raw food below cooked food. Transfer canned food to another container to avoid the risk of chemical contamination caused by the rusting of original cans. He also recommends that any frozen food that has been defrosted must never be refrozen to maintain its goodness. It’s highly advised to cook defrosted food immediately to kill microorganisms; otherwise, putting them back in the freezer only slows down the growth of bacteria.
