1. THE CROWN TAVERN BEST OF THE BEST
3. GALE MOTOR CO. WHISKEY & WINE BEST OF CONCORD
99 Hanover St., Manchester, 218-3132, thecrownonhanover.com
148 N. Main St., Concord, 715-8575, find them on Facebook
The Crown Tavern was born out of a vision of Hanover Street Chophouse owner Steven Clutter, corporate general manager Tony Chapman and executive chef Stuart Cameron to open an eatery with a more casual and relaxed environment. With menu items such as fresh burgers and wood-fired oven pizzas, the offerings at The Crown are meant to serve as alternatives to the Chophouse’s steak and shellfish dinners. The restaurant opened in August 2017 just a block away from the Chophouse, in the space of the former Crown Theater, a popular movie theater during the early half of the 20th century. The Crown has become known for its handmade wood-fired oven, which cooks pizzas like a traditional cheese with aged mozzarella, ricotta, fontina and pecorino cheeses; the Pesto Pie pizza, with roasted tomatoes, ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, corn, arugula and basil pesto; and the Local Farm pizza, with sausage, pork belly, potatoes, eggs, and cheddar and Parmesan cheeses. But the menu also features appetizers like oysters with cocktail sauce and a jumbo shrimp with ginger dip, and entrees like roasted chicken, pastas, salmon and more. Daily “Blue Plate Specials” are featured throughout the week too, as well as a variety of local beers and wines on tap at the bar. The Crown is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday from 4 to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Dave Spagnuolo and Stacey Murphy owned and operated the original Gale Motor Co. Eatery on Lowell Street in Manchester (now known as Noodle Bar) for nearly two years before launching a second restaurant about 20 miles north in the Capital City. But despite bearing the Gale Motor Co. name, Whiskey & Wine, which opened in November 2017, has a different focus. Sure, the menu has items like bao tacos and miso ramen that would be familiar to those who dined at the former Manchester eatery. But there are additional options like prime cuts of meat, sushi rolls and more, plus more than 30 different whiskeys, bourbons and ryes that come from all over the world. Whiskey & Wine also won Best of Concord for Best Noodle Bowl in Hippo Best of 2018.
2. MEL’S DINER BEST OF MANCHESTER
4. COPPER DOOR RESTAURANT
41 S. Broadway, Salem, 458-2033, copperdoorrestaurant.com Building on the success of its first restaurant in Bedford, which opened in late 2011, the Copper Door Restaurant launched a second location in Salem in November 2017. According to private dining coordinator Sandy Rozek, the new Copper Door offers all of the same lunch and dinner menu items as the Bedford restaurant. The menus vary seasonally, with options like wood-fired oven pizzas, steaks, seafood and other items sourced from local farms. The Salem restaurant also has two dining rooms that accommodate parties and other events for up to 40 people. The Copper Door also won Best of Manchester for Best Fine Dining Restaurant and Best Restaurant Overall in Hippo Best of 2018, both for its Bedford location.
454 Charles Bancroft Highway, Litchfield, 424-6357, find them on Facebook Jeff Bono of Nashua knew there was no question that once he found the vacant restaurant space directly adjacent to Mel’s Funway Park in Litchfield, he was going to turn it into the town’s newest neighborhood diner. Bono comes from southern New Jersey — “the diner capital of the nation,” as he calls it — where he grew up within driving distance of more than a dozen diners. Mel’s Diner, which opened in February 2018, is a love letter to the original diners of the New Jersey and Philadelphia areas with menu items such as rib-eye cheesesteak sandwiches and made-from-scratch biscuits and gravy. Breakfast is available all day, with offerings such as flat-top omelets, Belgian waffles, French toast, pancakes and steak and eggs. Lunch options include American chop suey, chicken pot pie and club sandwiches, and there are “breakfast as dessert” items such as deep-fried cinnamon bun. Despite the similar name to the park next door, Bono actually named the diner after the fictional Phoenix diner of the same name in his favorite TV show, Alice. Mel’s Diner opens at 7 a.m. seven days a week. Closing times vary depending on the business that night.
5. BACKYARD BREWERY & KITCHEN
1211 S. Mammoth Road, Manchester, 623-3545, backyardbrewerynh. com The space formerly known as The Yard Restaurant officially made the transition to the Backyard Brewery & Kitchen in the summer of 2017. Backyard Brewery & Kitchen is a brewpub that was launched to piggyback on the growing craft beer scene in southern New Hampshire. What makes it unique is the creation of craft brews and food items for the specific purpose of pairing them with one another. Backyard Brewery & Kitchen is also now the central meeting point for the Manchvegas Brew Bus, which kicked off its first brewery tours in April. The brewpub is open Sunday through Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Thursday until 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday until midnight.

6. MADEAR’S
175 Hanover St., Manchester, 206-5827, madears603.com Madear’s brings the authentic tastes of Cajun country to the Queen City. The restaurant focuses on southern-style comfort food in the form of tapas and shareable plates, plus dozens of desserts and cocktails that are featured on an alwayschanging seasonal menu. Madear’s held its grand opening in late September 2017. It’s a collaboration between Kyle Davis, a former engineer from Hudson, and Chef Robb Curry, who grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and whose grandmother shares the name of restaurant. Curry, who has more than 20 years of culinary experience, credits his grandmother Ma’dear for inspiring him to cook at a young age. Visitors of Madear’s will always start their meals off with made-from-scratch cheddar biscuits, and from there they can order items like fried catfish, pulled pork sliders, fried alligator, fried pickles and more. Main courses also rotate seasonally and include rice bowls, gumbo, Cajun rice, jambalaya, risotto dishes and much more. For desserts, there is red velvet cake, banana pudding, German chocolate cake and pecan pie. Madear’s provides a very casual and intimate atmosphere that Curry said was meant to make you feel like you are walking into your grandmother’s house. They also host several special dinners and pajama brunches every Sunday. It’s open Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday until midnight, and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

8. OFF MAIN PIZZERIA
26 Pleasant St., Concord, 227-6661, find them on Facebook Concord resident Jon Devens had been in the pizza business for more than 25 years as a franchise owner for Domino’s when he opened this modest pizza shop near the intersection of Pleasant and Main streets in the Capital City in January 2018. The vision he had for Off Main Pizzeria was simple, but one he identified as a niche that could be filled — it’s designed to be a quick place where you can grab your favorite pizza by the slice and be on your way, or it could be fun spot to hang out and enjoy a few slices with some friends. Devens created the menu to include options of ordering pizzas either by the slice or as two sizes of full pies. All pizzas are made with handstretched thin crusts, with gluten-free options available. And while you can choose from several familiar favorites like pepperoni, meat lover’s or Buffalo chicken, Devens added harder-to-find toppings like pastrami Reuben and Jamaican jerk chicken, and pizza options such as sweet Thai chili pizza (available with either chicken or steak). Other items include salads and made-to-order fresh paninis. Off Main Pizzeria is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The addition of another Red Arrow Diner on Loudon Road in Concord in July 2017 now makes four locations in the Granite State where you can enjoy 24 hours of breakfast, lunch and dinner service (the others being in Manchester, Londonderry and Milford). The first Red Arrow Diner opened in the Queen City way back in 1922 and has since become a popular spot for local celebrities and for presidential candidates from across the country. The space of the former Sunoco gas station on Loudon Road was demolished to create a home for the newest Red Arrow Diner in Concord, and if you’ve dined at any of its other locations, you’ll feel right at home here. In Hippo Best of 2018, The Red Arrow Diner also won Best of Concord for Best Diner for its Concord location, and Best of the Best for Best Diner for its Manchester location.

Eric Griffin opened this American eatery in September 2016 in the former space of Chapanga’s Griddle & Grill. Griffin has been in the restaurant business since the age of 16 and spent a lot of time working in the kitchen with his mother and grandmother as a child growing up in South Carolina and Virginia. He came to New Hampshire when his wife found a new job, and that was when he decided to open his own eatery. He opened Grill 603 with the idea that the restaurant would have a comfortable atmosphere and a variety of dinner options borrowing concepts from multiple cuisines. Everything is made from scratch, right down to the desserts, the sauces and the dressings. Options include appetizers and salads, burgers and sandwiches, pasta dinners, steak entrees, seafood items and much more. Grill 603 is open Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 10 p.m., and Sunday until 8 p.m.

Ottilie Wagner Hosser gifted the city block where her house stood to the city in 1944, and she wanted a park of “peace and love” to differ from the many military-oriented parks in the city, according to the website. A short stroll from the Currier Museum of Art, it features a Greek-style temple and park benches.

We love our seasons. Every year we ask readers to name the “Best Thing about Living in NH.” Our four seasons take the top prize, “even if the worst is the longest,” as one reader this year said, possibly referring to winter. Of course, winter has its fans. After all, it’s when you can go sledding at places like the Derryfield Country Club (625 Mammoth Road in Manchester), whose hill off Mammoth Road was named Best of the Best for Best Sledding Hill. White Park (1 White St. in Concord), which has a sledding hill and a skating rink in winter, nabbed Best of Concord. Mack’s Apples (230 Mammoth Road in Londonderry) won Best of Manchester and Roby Park (Spit Brook Road in Nashua) won for Best of Nashua. Winter is also when you can check out the annual Easterseals Winter Wine Spectacular (easterseals.com/nh), which is usually held near the end of January as part of New Hampshire Wine Week. This giant wine tasting won Best in the Best Wine-Related Event category. Winter is also Oscar season. The Red Carpet Oscar Party at Red River Theatres (11 S. Main St. in Concord; redrivertheatres.org, 224-4600) won runner-up in the Best Film Event or Series category and featured an evening of fun showcasing a live broadcast of the Academy Awards. Oscars will be handed out in 2019 on Feb. 24. Right around the time we’re celebrating the official start of spring (no matter what the weather is doing), you can head to downtown Manchester for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade (saintpatsnh.com), which is scheduled for Sunday, March 24, 2019, at noon. The parade won honorable mention in the Best Parades category. Many area farmers markets also start their seasons in the spring. The Concord Farmers Market (concordfarmersmarket.com), which runs Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Capitol Street in downtown Concord, kicked off the first Saturday in May and will run through October. It 82 BEST OF 2018
also won Best in the Best Farmers Market category. Bedford Farmers Market (bedfordfarmersmarket.org) won runner-up and is scheduled to open June 12 and run Tuesdays through Oct. 9 from 3 to 6 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Seton Church (190 Meetinghouse Road in Bedford). Honorable mention went to Nashua Farmers Market (downtownnashua.org/ farmers-market), which will kick off June 17 and run Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., through Oct. 14, at 65 Main St. in Nashua. Market Days Festival (intownconcord.org) held in downtown Concord kicks off summer with three days of music, family activities, food and shopping, running June 21 through June 23. The event won an honorable mention in the Best Family/Kids Event category. Summer is also when you can catch the Fourth of July Parade in the center of Amherst, which starts at 10 a.m. every Independence Day (amherstnh.gov) and was voted Best Parade. Fall is, not surprisingly, the season that seems to have the most fans. The Milford Pumpkin Fest is held Columbus Day weekend in downtown Milford and was voted Best Family/Kids event. The Deerfield Fair (deerfieldfair.com) runs Sept. 27 through Sept. 30 and was picked as the runner-up in that category. The SNOB Film Festival (Somewhat North of Boston, snobfilmfestival. com) takes place Nov. 8 through Nov. 11 at Red River Theatres in Concord and was picked as the Best Film Event or Series. The New Hampshire Film Festival (nhfilmfestival.com), which runs Oct. 11 through Oct. 14 at locations in downtown Portsmouth, won an honorable mention in the film event category. And, as we head back to winter, the Christmas Parade in downtown Manchester (intownmanchester.com) is technically still in fall — the first Saturday of December, usually, at 4 p.m. The parade, which ends with Santa riding on a fire truck, won runner-up for Best Parade.
