we have so much cool stuff
C
ool people, like Dianne Plansky, news and weather correspondent for “What’s Up, Litchfield?” and winner of the Funnest NH-Based Personality award in this year’s Hippo Best of 2019. Or Catherine Hilscher, owner of Cats Kingdom in Manchester, which readers named “Best Independent Pet Store” in our Things We Forgot to Ask About category. Cool places, like Ben’s Sugar Shack, whose maple syrup won Best NH Made Product, and Noodz in Manchester, which won Best of the Best in both Best New Eatery and Best Noodle Bowl. So many cool places to eat, shop, visit and eat (yes, we are fond of southern New Hampshire’s tasty food options) get some love every year in our readers’ poll. In the Hippo Best of 2019 we have old favorites and new discoveries on the list. Find the issue with all the results of the poll at hippopress.com. Click on “Read the Entire Paper:

Hippo Magazine 2019
See Our Flip Book on Issuu,” where you’ll find complete issues that can be read on any device. (The results of the Best of 2019 ran in the March 28 issue.) In this magazine, we’re going to dig a little deeper, look at even more reader recommendations for their favorite places to grab a donut, have a fine dining experience or browse for new works of art. And make no mistake, being named the 10th or the 15th favorite of Hippo readers is a big deal, as categories can get thousands of votes. As you plan your visits to the places listed here, one note: Much of the information comes from the location’s websites and social media pages, so call ahead to verify hours or check that the scone or craft brew you have a hankering for is still available. Want to find something cool to do? Let Hippo’s readers give you a few ideas.

Coolest thing about living in NH
E
ven in winter, this is a pretty cool place to live. When the Hippo asks readers for the “Best thing about living in NH” the seasons usually win out — and even winter gets some votes. Perhaps winter fans are thinking about heading to one of the spots picked as Best Sledding Hill, such as the Derryfield Country Club (625 Mammoth Road in Manchester, 669-0235, derryfieldgolf.com), picked as best of the best, or White Park (1 White St. in Concord), named the best of Concord; Mack’s Apples (230 Mammoth Road in Londonderry, 434-7619, macksapples.com), the best of Manchester, or Roby Park (Spit Brook Road in Nashua, 589-3370, nashuanh.gov), the best of Nashua. Of course, the big favorite is fall — both the foliage and the weather get lots of votes. Maybe this fall you can celebrate the season by heading to one of the spots picked for its Best Outdoor View. Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey was named as the best spot with Mount Major (off Route 11 in Alton) the runner-up and Mount Washington getting an honorable mention. As the weather warms up in the springtime (even the sub-season known as “mud season” got a mention from one voter), enjoy the fresh

air and budding greenery at one of the spots picked as Best Bar with an Outdoor Deck. The Derryfield Restaurant (625 Mammoth Road in Manchester, 623-2880, thederryfield. com) took best of the best in this category. Downtown Cheers Grille & Bar (17 Depot St. in Concord, 228-0181, cheersnh.com) won best of Concord, Murphy’s Taproom (494 Elm St. in Manchester; 644-3535, murphystaproom. com) won best of Manchester and The Pasta Loft Restaurant (241 Union Square in Milford, 672-2270, pastaloft.com) won best of Nashua. Perhaps because readers take our poll in February, summer seems to get particularly enthusiastic votes: “summer time — sunny 80 degree days” wrote one voter. If summertime has you making day trip plans, consider Strawbery Banke Museum (14 Hancock St. in Portsmouth, 433-1100, strawberybanke.org), the runner-up in the Best Cultural Site category, or America’s Stonehenge (105 Haverhill Road in Salem, 893-8300, stonehengeusa.com), the honorable mention in that category. Andres Institute of Art (98 Route 13 in Brookline; 673-8441, andresinstitute.org), the best of Nashua winner in the Favorite Hidden Gem category, is New England’s largest outdoor public sculpture park. The Andres Institute sees
new additions each year during a symposium featuring international artists. Whatever the weather, you can check out the Currier Museum of Art (150 Ash St. in Manchester, 669-6144, currier.org), which won Best Cultural Site. This museum, with its exhibitions and permanent collections and events for art lovers of all ages, is one of the better known jewels in the southern New Hampshire stuff-to-do crown. When we asked readers about their Favorite Hidden Gems, they made even more suggestions for year-round fun: Manchester Firing Line (2540 Brown Ave. in Manchester: 668-9015, gunsnh.com) won best of the best; The Gas Lighter Restaurant (204 N. Main St. in Concord; 228-8854) won best of Concord and The Craftworkers Guild (5 Meetinghouse Road in Bedford, 472-8109, thecraftworkersguild.org; this seasonal shop opens for short stretches about four times a year). This blend of art and culture, outdoors and entertainment showcases the great diversity of interests not only of Hippo’s readers but of Granite Staters overall. Perhaps that’s why readers’ second favorite thing about living here is, as one reader put it, the “wonderful friendly people.”
