All politics is local — and our region’s inability to bring passenger rail back to Manchester, Nashua and the rest of the Merrimack Valley is a good example of that.

However, this old saying might offer the key to finally making progress, even as state lawmakers in Concord are maneuvering to ban using state money on the long-stalled project.

How? I think the issue is that in New Hampshire, as in most places in America, public transit projects such as this naturally fall to a state’s transportation department to plan and oversee.

But in the Granite State, a majority of residents feel they’ll see no real benefits from Manchester and Nashua joining Boston’s commuter rail network. Hence the opposition and inaction, even though civic officials in Manchester and Nashua, the state’s two largest cities, have pushed it for decades.

What to do? I think it’s time for leaders in the Merrimack Valley to recognize that the state DOT is simply the wrong crib for this baby. A majority of the state (and hence the Legislature, which funds the state DOT) will simply never be convinced to make the investment.

So instead, a group of civic leaders from Concord south to Nashua should band together and craft a plan to fund it on their own.

This would require the creation of an entity similar to a tax increment financing district, but on a larger scale. It might function like a regional planning agency, but with the power to propose and implement taxes or other funding mechanisms (subject to voter approval) to raise revenue for restarting and operating passenger rail.

It wouldn’t be easy. But the Merrimack Valley is the most heavily populated area of New Hampshire, home to 561,000 of the state’s 1.3 million residents. It boasts the state’s largest concentration of business activity.

Surely this area on its own could generate the estimated $300 million all-in investment needed to extend passenger rail north from Lowell, Mass., and the annual subsidy of about $13 million.

In return, we’d reap the benefits of improved access to Boston, the region’s economic hub.

And here’s an idea to start you thinking: Why not impose a $5 fee on anyone boarding a Boston Express Bus to Logan Airport, with the revenue earmarked for passenger rail?

State health officials reported 108 new cases of Covid-19 on April 11.

The state averaged 200 new cases per day over the most recent seven-day period, a 49 percent increase compared to the week before. As of April 11 there were 10 people being treated for Covid in hospitals statewide.

New commission

Gov. Chris Sununu has signed an Executive Order establishing the Governor’s Commission on Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking.

According to a press release, the commission was a recommendation from the Task Force on Domestic Violence Cases in the New Hampshire Judicial Branch. It had previously stopped meeting in 2013. “We must keep victims safe and hold offenders accountable,” Sununu said in the release. “Combatting and preventing domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking remains a priority for my administration and I am looking forward to working with this group so that we can develop, support and implement initiatives that address the needs of victims and survivors.” The Commission consists of members of the state’s justice department, health and human services, law enforcement and other departments and organizations.

New England activists held a Healing Ceremony at the Merrimack Station in Bow, the last coal plant in the region. According to a press release, nine activists decorated the fence with flowers and posters and performed the “Elm Dance,” a Latvian ceremony originally created for the healing of Chernobyl. The activists are a part of the No Coal No Gas campaign to close the Merrimack Station, the release said.

The University of New Hampshire at Merrimack Manchester has a new scholarship Amherst for students enrolled in its psychology and neuropsychology programs, with Londonderry awards upMilford to $5,000 annually for full-time students.

According to a press release, the university has partnered with Network4Health to provide the scholarship, an effort to address the workforce shortage in behavioral health fields that has “become increasingly dire.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that between 2020 and 2030 NASHUA the number of behavioral health jobs will increase by 23 percent, the release said.

Seacoast-based author, editor and writing coach Jeff Deck discussed his latest project, We Got This, Kids: A real-time and raw glimpse of alcoholism, depression, and loss during a search for more sunrises.

What is your literary background?

I collaborate with writers to help them get their books done. Though my new service is focused on fantasy novels, I’ve worked with authors of both fiction and nonfiction. My own works include several novels, a nonfiction book called The Great Typo Hunt that I co-wrote with Benjamin D. Herson and holiday romances under a pen name.

minimize my intrusion into this family and their story, I saw my primary role as an editor rather than a co-author or ghostwriter. That also literally became my ‘character’ in the book — ‘The Editor,’ who steps into the footnotes to explain and elucidate the many obscure references that Andy included. The Editor also comments on any significant additions, deletions or rearrangements of the text in the footnotes to make the process we went through as transparent as possible. I interviewed Amy and other family members and friends not just to fill in the pieces that Andy never got to write, but to show the resonance of his life on the people around him. Everyone speaks in the first person, as close to their original words when I talked with them as possible, and mirroring Andy’s intimate narrative.

What is We Got This, Kids about?

We Got This, Kids is the story of one ordinary person, Andy Marsjanik, and his lifelong struggle with addiction, recovery and depression. It’s based on the half-finished memoir that Andy left behind when he died by suicide and filled in with the voices of those closest to him, his family and friends. SPORTS DAVE long’s longshots

C’s earn playoff 2-seed The NBA regular season is a wrap and the playoffs come your way starting Sunday for the Celtics, likely vs. Brooklyn, pending the result of Tuesday’s play-in game with Cleveland that happened after this column was filed.

Thanks to having Kevin Durant, most feel it will be the Nets. Which has a lot of people making a big deal about having to play them so early. But if they are as formidable as most think (besides me), sooner or later you usually see them, so who cares if it’s in Round 1, 2 or 3? Though admittedly it would’ve been preferable to have Rob Williams on board when/if he’s able to come back from knee surgery.

The sooner or later theory eluded Bucks Coach Mike Budenholzer, however; he took the chicken’s way out by tanking on Sunday to set up a more favorable match-up with the fading Bulls, a move that could turn out to be a strategic blunder if they face the C’s in Round 2, as it gift-wrapped the second seed and home court advantage that came with it to his opponent. On the plus side, however, the chicken’s way out does eliminate the prospect of having to face both Boston and New Jersey, er, Brooklyn, because one will knock off the other. Of course it’s also bulletin board material, because it says chicken man Budenholzer thinks the Nets are gonna win, so they’ll get home court anyway.

So now Celtics Nation has another person to hate sports in the 2022 playoffs, which will (likely) be focused on dastardly Kyrie Irving in Round 1 and chicken man in Round 2 if they get that far. Though Cleveland upsetting NJ, er, Brooklyn would unravel that plan faster than the Brian Flores lawsuit vs. the NFL deepsixed Tom Brady’s alleged plot to stab folks in Tampa Bay in the back via a QB coup to install himself as the guy under center in Miami.

So boo to Kyrie. Boo to the new NBA chicken man. And if true, boo especially to the increasingly duplicitous Brady. But I digress on that one.

With all that laid out, here are some more Celtics and non-Celtics playoff thoughts.

Bravo for Ime Udoka for going for the win on Sunday vs. Memphis to get home court in Round 2 over an easier Round 1 match-up.

Then again he didn’t have much of a choice, ’cause if they tanked and Philly won (which they did) they would have fallen to the 4-seed.

That would have meant a series vs. Toronto, where the allegedly unvaxxed Jaylen Brown would have missed all the games in Canada.

I’m taking Toronto over Philly, by the way, for two reasons. The Sixers’ valuable sixth man Matisse Thybulle is unvaxxed, so he can’t play north of the border. Plus while he whines more during games than anyone beside Bills coach Sean McDermott, Nick Nurse is a much better game coach than Doc Rivers, who has eight first-round knock-outs in 22 years.

I’ve also got Memphis coming out of the West, because I like their team D, which leads the NBA in steals and blocked shots, relentless offensive rebounding, and given his own unimpressive playoff history, I see Ja Morant winning head to head over Chris Paul.

Aside from the fact his head isn’t square, am I the only one who thinks Nikola Jokic is a dead ringer for Rocky Balboa’s nemesis Ivan Drago?

Joke of the Week: A priest walks into a bar — no, that’s not it. It was the talk show guy somewhere who asked after Kyrie’s recent 60-point game if he and KD were the greatest 1-2 punch in NBA history.

Cut to the laugh track.

Guess he missed KI not even being named to ESPN’s recent Top 75 Players List. On that list alone were Jordan and Pippen, Shaq and Kobe, Stockton and Malone, Bird and McHale, West and Baylor, Magic and Kareem, Kareem and Oscar, Oscar and Jerry Lucas, Cousy and Russell, Havlicek and Cowens, LeBron and Dwayne Wade or AD, Wilt and his next-door neighbor, let alone Hal Greer or Billy Cunningham. Heck, he’s not even in KD’s best two 1-2 punches with Steph Curry or Russell Westbrook.

So yank that guy’s press pass because he’s a historical doofus and basketball nitwit.

In 2009 we heard KG would be back for the playoffs. Ditto in 2011 with Shaq and it was the same for Bill Walton in 1987. None made it back. So they have to carry on as if Lob it to Rob is not coming back until they see him in a game.

Also, no hero ball. This guy’s legs are his game, so they should err on the side of caution no matter what.

Here’s my pick for Round 1 depending on who the Celtics play.

Cleveland vs. Boston: Tougher than you think. I love Darius Garland and rookie Evan Mobley. But if their center Jared Allen’s broken finger isn’t OK to go, his loss is more damaging to them than Lob it to Rob is to Boston. C’s in five.

Brooklyn vs. Boston: KD is one of the few guys who can win a series on his own. So beware of him. Kyrie will do what he always does — have two games where most will say, “Wow, that guy is good.” Three more will be routine low in the 20’s games where he’ll get killed on D, and he’ll totally choke in two more.

So the series comes down to this: Tatum has to play Durant even and Jaylen has to be better than Kyrie. I’ll bet on JB and the Celtics far superior team defense. C’s in six.

Likable Celtics cheerleader Brian Scalabrine has said several times of late, Tatum is a Top 10 player. But sorry, he can’t be considered that until he dominates in the playoffs.

So the chance to make that statement is at hand.

New Hampshire is the fifth most financially literate state in the country, according to WalletHub’s 2022’s Most & Least Financially Literate States report. The report analyzed financial-education programs and consumer habits, according to a press release. The Granite State came in first for WalletHub’s WalletLiteracy Survey score and for financial knowledge and education. It also has the lowest share of unbanked households, and it ranked eighth for percentage of adults who compare credit cards before applying and 12th for the percentage of adults who only pay the minimum on credit cards, the report said.

Score: +1 Comment: The only other state to make the Top 10 was Maine, which ranked seventh. Nebraska, Utah, Virginia and Colorado beat out New Hampshire for the Top 4 spots.

The New Hampshire business and nonprofit community has banded together to create the Ukraine Relief Fund. According to a press release, the fund launched last week, and 100 percent of donations will be directed to relief efforts in Ukraine through a partnership between Granite United Way and the Walesa Institute. “This effort showcases how New Hampshire often uniquely addresses things,” Patrick Tufts, president and CEO of Granite United Way, said in the release. “While we recognize that no single entity can solve one of the world’s most complex issues, we do know that together we can create true impact.”

From 2014 through 2020, there have been 42 fatal crashes with distraction or inattention as the primary cause, and in 2020 distracted driving accounted for as much as 30 percent of all crashes throughout the state, according to the New Hampshire Office of Highway Safety. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the state is taking the opportunity to remind residents that distracted driving, including the use of electronic devices, is dangerous and illegal.

The American Culinary Federation Education Foundation has granted accreditation to the New Hampshire Food Bank’s Recipe for Success – Culinary Job Training Program. According to a press release, it’s the first culinary training program in New Hampshire to receive this distinction, and only the eighth in the country. The program helps people with financial hardships learn new skills so they can be more self-sufficient and ultimately find employment in the food service industry. Recipe for Success provides more than 500 meals per day to five Boys & Girls Clubs in the surrounding areas and produces meals in bulk to be frozen for use by 31 other agencies, the release said.

A detective thriller, a parody about a certain wizarding school and children’s tales with a macabre twist are just a few of the shows coming to New Hampshire theaters this spring. Actors, directors and other theater personnel talked about their respective shows, what makes them unique and what it takes to get them stage-ready.

What attracted you to this show?

group I’m in for theater in New Hampshire.

I hadn’t heard of Puffs before, but I quickly fell in love with it during my research and thought it would be a lot of fun to audition for something again after a few months.

Describe the character you’re playing.

The character I’m playing is Megan Jones, who puts on a tough act but is a big softie at heart. When you first meet her, she really rejects her family’s long lineage of Puffs and idolizes her mom, who became something greater in her eyes by working for the Dark Lord and ended up in Wizard Prison because of it. Megan’s big dream is that her mom will break out and come rescue her from this school she feels has failed her. At first, Megan does everything she can to reject being a Puff. But her friendships with Wayne and Oliver lead her on a journey of embracing her identity as a Puff and realizing her house and the Puffs around her are incredibly special. When I think of Megan, I think of someone who has a lot of layers, a lot of self-love to learn, but also someone who cares deeply about her friends and is way goofier than she’ll ever admit.

What have you been doing to prepare?

Preparing myself for this character began

early on in one-on-one rehearsals with Christie [the director] where we got to have a long discussion and really dissect this character and create a solid foundation to build upon. When I came across something I didn’t really understand about Megan’s character, whether reading lines alone or rehearsing with the group, I worked to see it in the big picture of who Megan is and understand the context behind it. That’s really helped me to build her [character] even more. It’s also been so fun to build her further through rehearsing with the other people in this cast, and all the fun little moments we’ve created for our characters.

Seeing the characters and their relationships to each other blossom has been so cool and often leads to some hysterical moments.

One more thing I’ve done to prepare is I made a Megan Jones playlist with songs that remind me of her, and I like listening to it to help get into character.

What are you looking forward to most about bringing this show on stage?

I’m looking forward to people seeing this super funny show. I never get tired of these jokes, and everyone in this cast is hilarious.

They’re always improvising new things, and they get funnier each time we’re all

together. Everyone has worked so hard, and I can’t wait to hear all the laughter from the audience. It’s going to be amazing finally sharing this with people.

Why do you think this is a show audiences will enjoy right now?

I think audiences will enjoy this show because it’s a familiar story with a unique twist. While new stories are always fun, it’s nice to sometimes return to what is familiar and find appreciation for it in new ways.

People will recognize many of the major plot points, and I think they’ll really enjoy seeing it from this new perspective. It’s nostalgic and truly hilarious, and finding things that bring a smile to our faces has been so important these past couple of years.

What attracted you to this show?

I’ve been a fan of a certain boy wizard for a long time, so getting to finally be a part of that world in one way or another has always been a goal of mine. First hearing about this show back in 2018 or 2019, I knew it was a show I wanted to be in.

Describe the character you’re playing.

Wayne is an optimist and a dreamer. He has these big plans for himself and how he’s going to change the world, however cruel the world may be to him, or whoever stops him from fulfilling the goals he has for himself.

What have you been doing to prepare?

For one, I’ve definitely been practicing my wand techniques, but, in all seriousness, I’ve gone back to reread the books set at a certain school of female magic and male magic, including any spinoff material to immerse myself back into that world.

I’ve also been consuming a fair amount of retro media, as my character Wayne is very much immersed in the pop culture of the ’80s and ’90s.

What have rehearsals been like?

Christie, the director, has made the rehearsal process such a blast. It’s been

such a fun environment to be a part of, and everyone involved in this show, from the cast to the production team to the crew and everyone in between, has been incredible to work with.

What are you looking forward to most about bringing this show on stage?

I’m very much looking forward to bringing a new perspective to those seven years at magic school — an underdog perspective. The Puffs, as a group, are the ones who’ve never been destined for anything, and for there to be a story that’s all about them truly warms my heart.

What attracted you to this show?

I’ve been wanting to produce this show for several years now. It’s a well-paced, clever play with excellent dialogue and great roles for actors, and its theme of social responsibility is more important than ever.

For a piece written in 1945, it’s astonishingly pertinent today.

Why do you think this is a show audiences will enjoy right now?

I think audiences need a break from reality, even if it’s only for two hours. Movies and television are a thing that can provide that, but I’ve found that nothing brings that sense of wonder to a person like live theater does. Plus, this show is heartfelt, actionpacked and just plain funny. Even if you aren’t a fan of that certain boy wizard, this show is a laugh-out-loud good time.

How are you interpreting the show as a director?

The only change I’m making is that we’re not using British accents. I wanted the play to feel very accessible and contemporary.

What have rehearsals been like?

A joy. I have a solid professional cast. …

Each of them brings thoughtful character interpretations to their role, and everybody is fully prepared for rehearsals.

What are you looking forward to most about bringing this show on stage?

The process of creating a piece for the stage with a collaborative team is what I love most about directing. Not just working with the excellent cast, but also [with the] costume designer, set designer and lighting designer, discovering things together.

For instance, I really wanted to cast against type and have a woman play the title role of the Inspector, even though it might be anachronistic, but [the costume designer], in her costume research, discovered that there actually were female police officers in England at the time the play takes place in the early 1900s. This changed our approach to the character.

Why do you think this is a show audiences will enjoy right now?

The script is excellent, the characters are fascinating and the story is absolutely pertinent to our world today. There are even lines that echo eerily; they could be spoken in 2022 instead of 1912. [The Inspector says,] ‘We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.’ In an era of instant global communication and connection, these issues seem even more important [today] than they were 75 years ago.

What attracted you to this play?

Having been involved in community theater for 17 years, I’ve seen a lot of mishaps and blunders, both on and off stage. This will be our third production in this genre, about a theater company putting on a play that goes horribly awry.

How are you interpreting the play?

Some of the sound effects are pretty simple, but some require some imaginative editing. I can’t go into more detail; you’ll have to come see the show.

What have rehearsals been like?

We’re pretty early in the rehearsal process.

The cast has mostly been laughing hysterically, as putting the script into action on stage has been pretty funny.

What is the biggest challenge of this play?

It can be difficult to stage many of the set failures that are found in the script without a Broadway bankroll. The Manchester Community Theatre Players can be quite imaginative within the confines of a community theater budget.

What are you looking forward to most about bringing this play to the stage?

Audiences are desperate to see theater on stage rather than in Zoom boxes, and theater companies love the feedback that audiences provide.

What inspired you to write this show?

When I was a child, in the old timey days before cable TV and the internet, my mother used to read to me a lot — classics like The Wizard of Oz books and the Narnia chronicles, as well as Grimm, Native American mythology, Mother Goose, Aesop, Edward Gorey and, my favorite, campfire ghost stories. Bitter Pill generally plays to an adult audience, and I began to notice a lot of families at our concerts. We started editing our set lists to be more accessible for those shows. I wanted to create something an out-of-the-ordinary family would enjoy within the aesthetic of our band, so I started writing Children of the Grim inspired from my childhood stories.

There are so many wonderfully dark, strange and bizarre tales from all over the world. It’s funny how those macabre stories used to be totally acceptable for children; there was a time when we knew that the universe is a dark and dangerous place. Even the early days of Disney had such dark overtones. We’re using some verbatim tales as well as nursery rhymes set to original music. I also wrote my own tales and songs. There’s no through-line, but there are definitely themes, all told in a series of vignettes and songs. I’m not sure how to describe it in theatrical terms, but maybe it’s a song-cycle meets a scene-cycle.

Describe the music. What does it add to the show?

The music is folk and played on all stringed

instruments — acoustic guitars, mandolin, banjo and cello. Most of the show is original music, but [there are] also some traditional songs that may have been long forgotten.

Music is what feelings sound like, and we present them in a way that isn’t banging people over the head with too many theatrics.

Some of our songs create all the imagery needed simply by just singing them, without the fancy choreography or flashy lights.

What have rehearsals been like?

After our first rehearsal at the beginning of March, two of our actors contracted Covid.

We lost a little more than a week’s worth of work. I knew this was a possibility and scheduled the process keeping in mind that Covid would very likely rear its ugly head. They went into quarantine, and we all tested multiple times before getting together again.

Everyone got healthy very quickly, and we got right back to work. Since then, we’ve had a great time putting it together — a lot of laughs and plenty of goofiness.

What is the biggest challenge of directing this show?

Learning a new show is always challenging since there’s no reference point. There are no cast recordings or videos. It’s one of the reasons I love doing new work, whether [it’s] my own or others’. There are no expectations, and the creative process of bringing something new to life is frighteningly exciting. The biggest challenge, however, is that it’s been three years since I’ve directed anything, so the insecurities are hitting harder than usual. I’m second guessing, doubting myself and feeling the impostor syndrome here and there.

These are all very normal [feelings] in a normal world, but in this new abnormal [world], things are much more elevated. Navigating it is tricky, but everyone involved is so 100 percent committed that I walk away from each rehearsal with more and more confidence.

That’s how collaboration works — lifting each other and embracing the good and bad.

What do you hope the audience will take away from your show?

Humming a tune, and a bittersweet taste in their mouth.

What are you looking forward to most about seeing your show on stage?

It’s always a pleasure to see your work come to life before an audience for the first time. I imagine even more so these days.

I look forward to being in the same room, breathing the same air, feeling the same feelings. Some say theater, music and arts are an escape; I don’t agree. People go to a concert or see a play or a movie to feel something, to sit in the dark and be reminded that we’re luminous beings. I know I always walk away from art feeling lighter and maybe even a little enlightened.

Why do you think this is a show audiences will enjoy right now?

It’s not a typical play or musical, especially for families. Nothing is sugar-coated, and it’s dark, but also quite funny and poignant.

It’s also short — a little more than an hour with no intermission. These old and new tales are an important reminder to embrace the dark, because, without it, how do we find the light?

What attracted you to this show?

I was attracted to this show at first as a fan of the fandom and, second, as a Puff myself.

I had the privilege to see it off-Broadway as part of my sister-in-law’s bachelorette party and fell in love with the message that behind this seemingly misfit group are loyal, caring, hardworking individuals, and I connected with those characteristics.

How are you interpreting the show as a director?

As a director, my interpretation is to keep the heart, soul and lighthearted nature. This show has a lot of heart, and, once you lose that then it’s disingenuous.

What have rehearsals been like?

Rehearsals have been so collaborative and respectful. I honestly got very lucky with this cast.

What is the biggest challenge of directing this show?

The sheer amount of props, costume pieces, sound cues and lighting. This show has well over 100 props. I got very lucky with two productions finishing before mine, so many of my props are borrowed from Pow-

erhouse Theatre or Manchester Central High School. In addition, the sound cues and timing of wand- and spell-making and that coordination will be important.

What are you looking forward to most about bringing this show on stage?

I’m looking forward to getting this in front of an audience. This is a funny show, and the talent in the cast is undeniable. We worked on improv skills, building community and fostering ideas from the cast, and I hope it’s noticeable. Each actor had a one-on-one session with me, and seeing how each character holds their wand and casts spells is so subtle, but I hope that, in the small theater, it’s a detail that’s appreciated.

Why do you think this is a show audiences will enjoy right now?

If people are a fan of the fandom and are looking for a light-hearted comedy in a stressful world, this is the show to see. Also, sitting in the front row has some advantages in this show. What exactly are those advantages? You’ll just have to come and see.

What attracted you to this show?

First and foremost, the subject matter. The play deals with the struggle between individualism and collectivism and the disparity between those in the upper class and those in the lower class. With this work, Priestley asks us to reflect on how our actions affect those around us. Though the events of the play take place in 1912, these themes remain painfully relevant.

Describe the character you’re playing.

Sheila is the daughter of Arthur and Sibyl Birling. She fits into her parents’ carefully curated world of taste and refinement, but only just. She has a hot temper and is more intelligent than her family or fiance give her credit for. Her discomfort with the social and societal role she’s expected to play becomes evident fairly early on and only intensifies as the events of the play unfold.

What have you been doing to prepare?

In terms of preparation, I like to learn my lines as soon as possible. I feel it’s nearly impossible to do the work I need to do to build my character and support my castmates in the rehearsal room if I’m glued

to the page. I like to come into the first rehearsal as close to off-book as possible.

This play is a period drama, so I’ve been spending time outside of rehearsal researching the time period in which the events of the play take place. Also, in addition to making decisions about Sheila’s inner life, I need to find her psychically. BBC period dramas have been helpful research tools.

Watching the characters on screen can help me get a sense of how young women in that time period moved and held themselves.

The first season of Downton Abbey is especially useful since it takes place during the exact same time period as Inspector.

What are you looking forward to most about bringing this show on stage?

I’m looking forward to hearing what audiences take from the show.

Why do you think this is a show audiences will enjoy right now?

I’ve been in this show before; I played Sheila in college. My experience of the play this time around is quite different, having come out of two-plus years of the Covid pandemic. I can’t help but be struck by the enormous class divide that exists in this country and how it has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. We’ve been divided into those who can stay home, stay safe, order our groceries in and implore others to do the same, and those who simply cannot.

us weren’t afforded the luxury of staying safe. The sad truth is that many of us … have quite a lot in common with the Birlings. We think we’re doing the right thing, taking care of ourselves and those we love, but we’ve been blind to our own immense privilege. My hope is that the experience of this play, whether from the stage or the audience, will encourage all of us to step outside of ourselves a bit more.

Powerful works on display at ‘Impact! Abstract’ exhibition

Twiggs Gallery in Boscawen has opened its 2022 season with “Impact! Abstract!” featuring the work of six local artists and on display through May 28.

“It showcases artists boldly approaching abstraction in completely different ways with a wide variety of media,” Twiggs Gallery Director Laura Morrison said. “Most of the artwork in this exhibit is on the smaller side, yet each piece really stands out on its own. It’s very powerful work.”

Each of the six artists answered a few questions via email about their inspiration and techniques.

Ann Saunderson

Acrylic, mixed media, oil & cold wax, monotype What draws you to abstract art?

At first abstraction was just a challenge after having been a landscape and narrative painter all my life.

What was your artistic process in creating pieces for this exhibition?

It was surprisingly difficult to switch over and loosen up enough to enjoy the process.

Once I accepted that I could paint over layers it was easier. And oil and cold wax helped and added the possibility of texture. Most of my work is really quite accidental. I may start with a theme, a concept, and then halfway through there’s a moment where the paint and I change directions and truly I’m just along for the ride.

How did you use abstract art to inspire your writing?

What I wanted to do was to start with abstract expressionist artworks — without describing or explaining them — and bring to language those same disruptions to our stream of consciousness that occur when we encounter the unexplainable. … I’m so grateful for the opportunity to transcend mundane logic by means of nonrepresentational material — mineral, color, form, texture, light, shadow — I hoped the poems would create a conversation about reality, illusion, embodiment, perception and thought itself.

Was there any piece in particular that originally made you think, ‘This could be the basis for a poem’?

The very first poem I think I wrote for this series was based on my response to a painting called ‘Field Notes, No. 59,’ by Andrew Moore, that I saw in a gallery in Asheville, North Carolina, Blue Spiral. (The poem is ‘Notes for 59,’ Hippo | April 14 - 20, 2022 | Page 14

ent shapes and hues. Legos are an incredibly fun and abundant art supply and after repeatedly stepping on them I realized they could be more than nagging booby traps. For the two oil paintings included in the ‘Impact! Abstract’ exhibition I also used pigment sticks, which are basically solidified oil paint in the shape of a thumb-sized crayon. The use of these is more immediate and less deliberate and the marks noticeably different than from a paint brush.

How does your work in this exhibition make an impact?

The paintings both reflect and resonate the same playfulness and positivity as the Lego assemblages. They contain colorful pattern work, evocative shapes and a variety of paint application techniques to carry a sense of spontaneity.

I was so taken with it that I began to contemplate how abstract art, while not representing recognizable, ordered figures from our daily lives, can still represent a great and necessary part of our primal or archetypal human experience. I wondered if language could confound and re-orient us the same way. I took off from there.

How did you find the artwork that you drew your inspiration from? Local galleries? Online?

Some of it was from galleries, and a very few from artists whose work I already knew. But because I was injured and immobile at the time, I found most of it online through websites. Not the best way to view art, but it was a life-saver that I could view it at all.

Why abstract as opposed to representational art?

If I saw a painting and I could say, ‘That looks like a tree/house/river/anything!’ then I wouldn’t use it for this project. I didn’t even like using a totally abstract painting if it had a title that was too directive, like ‘Loneliness’ or ‘Rain in Winter.’ … I wanted to be affected in my heart or my gut or my skin while being clueless in my mind. I’m basically examining consciousness itself, building up a first-person plural, collective conversation, poem by poem, about reality and illusion, embodiment and spirit, perception and thought, as well as about art itself. Whether my response was infused

with humor or wonder or ache, the art became … akin to a religion — a way to access the transcendent by means of pure material.

Explain the subtitle of your new book.

Thank you for asking about this. The book starts with an epigraph from William James’s The Stream of Consciousness, written in 1892: ‘Consciousness is in constant change … a series of indirect considerations.... The only breaches that can well be conceived to occur within the limits of a single mind would … be interruptions, time-gaps during which the consciousness went out....’ The book’s subtitle reflects that concept. … It’s probably no surprise … that these poems are not narratives or linear lyrics. So I also hoped that by providing a pretty concrete hint of what the poems are after, the subtitle would help people know what they were getting themselves into.

Twiggs is calling this exhibition “bold and powerful.” Do your poems fit that description as well?

That’s not for me to say, but that’s definitely how I think of the art that inspired the poems in this collection.

Printmaking

What draws you to abstract art?

I was a painting major as an undergrad, discovered printmaking in my early 30s, and fell in love with the way it has to be done step by step. The focus on process slows me down in a good way.

What inspired your choice of materials?

These particular prints are intaglio drypoints.

This means that the ink is snagged inside the lines rather than flowing across the surface. I use an expanded plastic material for the plate and all kinds of sharp objects to make an image. It is then inked, wiped, and put through a press onto dampened paper.

What was your artistic process in creating pieces for this exhibition?

The gallery inquired if I could submit some black and white images. With three older plates on hand, I printed those, became engrossed and created four more plates specifically for this exhibit.

The incentive was the invitation and I think Laura Morrison, the curator, used the absence of color to break up the other more vibrant work in a lovely installation.

How does your work in this exhibition make an impact?

• Artistic exploration of the White Mountains: Writer Howard Mansfield and composer Ben Cosgrove present “A Journey to the White Mountains in Words and Music” at the Bank of NH Stage (16 S. Main St., Concord) on Thursday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. The show, which is based on a chapter from Mansfield’s recent book Chasing Eden: A Book of Seekers and on Cosgrove’s landscape-inspired music, explores the impact that the discovery of the White Mountains has today. “Pioneering artists in the 19th century taught Americans how to look at the wilderness,” Mansfield said in a press release. “Americans were eager for the lesson and … followed the artists. The authors include Brinda Charry, an immigrant from India to the U.S., fiction writer and specialist in British literature with a focus on English Renaissance literature and Shakespeare; Christine Nih’shaw Almstrom, children’s book author of Blackfeet/Onondaga Iroquois descent; Gledè Browne Kabongo, an author of psychological thrillers, originally from Dominica in the Eastern Caribbean; Hanh Bui, a children’s book author who came to the U.S. with her family at age 8 as a refugee escaping war-torn Vietnam; Loretta LC Brady, an author and a licensed clinical psychologist, professor of psychology and the director of the Community Resilience and Social Equity Lab at Saint Anselm College; and Masheri Chappelle, a playwright, novelist and intuitive consultant of African American and Native American descent. • Ancient photography: The Currier Museum of Art (150 Ash St., Manchester) has an exhibition, “Appeal of the Real: 19th Century Photographs of the Ancient World,” on view now through June 12.

It features creative writing by teens ages 13 to 19 from all over the world, including poetry and short fiction and creative nonfiction. “It speaks to the confusing whirlwind faced by teenagers [due to the] pandemic, political polarization, global warming, inequity and unrest,” Peary told the Hippo earlier this year, “[and to] writing and creative expression as a way to set a foot on the ground when the adult-made sky seems to be spinning.”

environments. The concerns are ecological and environmental. As an abstract artist, my aims are quite different from those who work toward realism. Texture, movement and repetition are all used to create a mysterious and engaging space where the viewer can consider not just what is present, but what might be happening outside the picture place.

What draws you to abstract art?

I started in abstract art almost accidentally. I was working in watercolor and started using a wet in wet technique to drop unusual colors into my landscapes. That led me to being more experimental and more colorful, letting go of realism in favor of design and color. The bottom line is that I’d much rather have a luscious crazy colorful painting than one that looks like a photograph.

What was your artistic process in creating pieces for this exhibition?

The pieces in this exhibit were painted with lots of play and experimentation. I put shapes and marks on the panel or canvas and then keep playing and experimenting, looking for surprises, and looking for what speaks to me. At some point in the process I start to see what the painting is about. At that point the refining, rearranging and adjusting are a bit easier, because I have an emotional direction for the painting.

What inspired your choice of materials?

Acrylic is a great medium for this type of playing around, trying things out and changing things.

How does your work in this exhibition make an impact?

Hopefully these paintings make people think and make them smile. In general, I think that abstract art asks more of the viewer. The artwork isn’t always a quick read. It’s an invitation to look and think and feel. My paintings are kind of two sides of a coin. The ‘Mud Season’ ones are dark and rich, but with strong lights. They’re the contrast between the dark and messy parts of life and the brighter things, such as hope and joy. The brightly colored ones, from the ‘Early Spring’ series, are joyful and reminiscent of the contrast between snow and the coming spring.

But that’s just my read on them. Everyone gets to bring their experience to the work and make their own judgments and their own stories.

What draws you to abstract art?

I’ve been a writer since I was young and have published two books of poetry. … Poetry is an abstraction of sorts, using as few words as possible to express the meaning of moments and events in our lives. Ten years ago I began to make image-based collages, layering figures and backgrounds to reflect multiple dimensions. That led me to an interest in combining image and text to create an additional layer of meaning. From there I began to make abstract collages because I was intrigued by the process of creating meaning without representational images. I enrolled in an online course in abstract collage in the spring of 2021. Through that class I learned different techniques for mark-making and printing collage papers and committed to a regular practice of collage-making. I’ve been regularly making abstract collages since.

What was your artistic process in creating pieces for this exhibition?

The pieces in the exhibit were created using techniques I’ve learned over the past year. The pieces arose from experimentation with techniques and materials and building trust in my instincts regarding composition and how to create meaning through abstraction.

What inspired your choice of materials?

I’m intrigued by meaning that can arise from unexpected combinations of materials. Sewing on paper, then painting the paper and cutting out shapes is included in three of the collages in the exhibit. I’m also drawn to the effects of layering transparent paper with varied prints, and what can emerge from that process. That’s reflected in the pieces in the show also.

How does your work in this exhibition make an impact?

As a longtime writer and somewhat beginner visual artist, I’ve always struggled with the question of how art has an impact in the world. I’m a lifelong social justice advocate, and worked for the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic

The element of experimentation, chance, and the unknown draw me to create abstract compositions.

What was your artistic process in creating pieces for this exhibition?

It all started by deconstructing a bullet and playing with the gunpowder inside. After a few singed fingertips I learned how to safely control this mild explosive. Following these experiments I considered the broader significance of this media and how it could be juxtaposed with traditional art media.

What inspired your choice of materials?

So much of my life is lived in motion.

Going, going, going. I often forget to stop and observe the subtle details of the life around me. … ‘Texture in Motion’ is a response to the chaos of a life that had intended to be more reflective and aware.

Developed over the past year, this mixed media work was created as a meditative process and bridges three unique media. The work plays with the physical properties of a fluid medium, bending and twisting, sometimes colliding with colors (acrylic ink). It is balanced by the varied, yet structured, textures that are interacted with on a daily basis (security envelopes) and are tied together by the contrasting unpredictability of a volatile explosive (black powder). This work is a reflection and metaphor of a life.

How does your work in this exhibition make an impact?

There is a visceral reaction to working with gunpowder that can’t be avoided. The anticipation of the ignition, when the flame touches the volatile grain, adds an extra beat to the rhythm of my heart. The chance, the unknown result of this material instantly impacting the surface and surrounding materials, adds to the anticipation and impact of this process.

friends at his studio in New York City. Warhol referred to the films, which were unscripted and played in slow motion, as “film portraits” or “stillies.” The exhibition will feature 20 of those films, provided by the Andy Warhol Museum, in loops across four large-scale projections. Plant summer-blooming flowers now

I like dahlias.

They are bright and come in many colors with blossoms from the size of daisies to the size of dinner plates. My wife, Cindy, loves dahlias. Every year we have discussions about how many we should plant and where they might go. I believe there is such a thing as too many dahlias. Cindy does not.

Each fall we dig up our dahlias a week or so after the first hard frost but before the ground freezes. We store them in a cool basement in boxes filled with sphagnum moss or sawdust that is lightly moist.

The problem is, each plant produces a dozen or more tubers, and each and every one will produce a new plant the next summer.

If you have purchased dahlia plants at a greenhouse in the past, maybe this year you would like to try planting some tubers.

They tend to be less expensive, and there is definitely more variety. Go to your local garden center or go online and order tubers.

Choose a 6-inch pot and fill it three quarters full with potting soil. Place the tuber so that it is lying flat on the surface, and cover with a few inches of potting soil. Pat it down, water lightly, and let it be. When it is ready, it will send up shoots and then it will need some bright lights.

They have tiny “eyes” or growing points, and if you can spot one, be sure to plant it on the top side. But eyes are not always easily identified.

I grow ours on a plant stand with fluorescent lights and have never tried them on a bright windowsill, but I guess that would work, too. If you find your plants on a windowsill are floppy or pale, switch to artificial lights if you have them.

I love calla lilies. These beauties are not true lilies at all, but members of the Arum

family (which includes Jack-in-the-pulpit, skunk cabbage and the house plants dieffenbachia and philodendron). Calla lilies are perennial in warm climates but, like dahlias and gladiolas, must be dug and brought inside before the winter here. Now is the time to start some calla rhizomes (a bulb-like modified stem) indoors. Plant them with the smooth side down.

One of the advantages of growing calla lilies is that they are not true lilies, hence not bothered by that dastardly red bug, the lily-leaf beetle. The lily-leaf beetle attacks Oriental and Asiatic lilies that I do so love but have given up growing. Calla lilies also bloom for a much longer time than true lilies, though they lack the fragrance of Oriental lilies.

To start calla lilies indoors now, buy rhizomes now at your local garden center or from a reputable supplier. The rhizomes need to be planted about 3 inches deep, then covered with potting mix. It is a good plant for people who tend to overwater their houseplants, as they thrive in moist soil. (By the way, start doubling the water to your rosemary plants if you over-wintered any. Otherwise they will dry out and die).

Once summer is here you can either transplant your potted calla to a nice sunny spot, or keep it in the pot and move it outside. Come fall, you will need to bring them inside, as temperatures around 20 will kill them. Callas need to go dormant in winter.

When buying some calla lily rhizomes at my local garden center, I also bought some gladiolus corms (commonly called bulbs).

My gardening grandfather loved growing gladioli, and won ribbons at the Worcester, Massachusetts, county fair most years.

Gladiolus corms are relatively inexpensive so most gardeners don’t bother saving them. Classic colors are red, yellow, pink and purple. I recently bought bulbs that will produce flowers with pink, white, and white with pink designs at my local garden

center. I will wait and plant them directly in the soil in my garden in June.

Another summer beauty is the canna lily. We grew some that were 6 feet tall last summer and they bloomed from mid-summer till fall. Buy rhizomes now and start them indoors to get a good jump on the season. They come in various sizes, and with green or purple foliage.

My favorite summer bulb plant is called a variety of common names: peacock orchid, sword lily, or fragrant gladiolus (even though this plant is not an orchid, a lily or a gladiolus). That’s why I like Latin names. If you ask for acidanthera murielae, plant-knowledgeable people around the world will know what you mean. But for now, I’ll refer to it as sword lily.

The sword lily has long, narrow leaves — like swords — that stand 18 inches or more tall. The blossoms are white with deep purple markings in the center of the six-petaled flower, along with a little yellow at the very center. You get two or three blossoms per stem, and they are enticingly fragrant, particularly in the evening. I’ll plant them now, eight to 12 bulbs 3 inches deep in a 12-inch pot, and grow them on the deck this summer.

I don’t know about you, but I need all the green growing things around me I can get as mud season lingers on. So get your summer bulbs now, before they are all sold out, and start a few indoors.

Even the smallest add-on can add up to millions

Dear Car Talk: I love your column and wouldn’t miss it. Here’s my question: Why don’t car manufacturers put two sun visors

I live where there are lots of winding roads, and every time I go around a bend, the sun “shifts” and ends up right in my eyes.

Years ago, I had a Volvo with two visors, so when I was driving, I didn’t have to keep flipping the visor back and forth from front to side as I drove.

A handful of cars I’ve driven have had them, Fran. But off the top of my head, I can’t remember which ones.

I know I’ve driven older Ford Explorers with them, and older Nissan Pathfinders. And I occasionally see them on some higher-end cars like Porsches and Range Rovers, when customers let me sit in them.

Why doesn’t everybody do it? Well,

I don’t want to accuse the automotive industry of being cheap, but I’m guessing that the extra cost is a factor. Maybe it only costs a few dollars to add a second visor, but you multiply that by a million vehicles a year and suddenly your customers are saying, “Wait, the tire tread is optional?”

I think the other factor is that the demand is not universal. Not that many people regularly drive on the kinds of roads you drive on, Fran.

While we do hear from people who want two visors, it’s not what we’d call a groundswell. It’s currently tied with electronic butt scratchers as the 131st most-requested new car feature.

It would be nice if you could order it as an option. But it’s not necessarily easy to add on after the car is built, since it’s mounted to the underside of the car’s roof. So you’ll probably have to do what your fellow sun-in-youreyes-on-winding-roads compatriots do, Fran. Get a good pair of sunglasses or a strip of tinted plastic and some double-sided tape for the top of your side window. Happy squinting!

Dear Car Talk: You should have added the Honda Fit

as an option for that lady whose arthritic golden retriever can’t jump up into her Yukon anymore.

The back seat lifts up and out of the way. Plus, it’s only 15 inches from the ground to the doorsill.

It’s affordable, too. Just make sure she remembers that the Fit doesn’t have much ground clearance like her Yukon, so no off-roading! But I think the Fit could be the right fit for her “dog” car!

Fondly, Linda Well, now you’ve presented me with an ethical dilemma, Linda. Do I have to split the check Honda sends me for this recommendation with you?

The Fit is not a bad idea. I leaned toward a minivan, because the sliding doors open so wide, and the back seats can come out completely, leaving a big, flat floor. The Fit’s doors are much smaller, by comparison. But the Fit might be worth a look.

Dear Car Talk: I have another suggestion for Holly, the older woman with the older dog that had trouble getting into her Yukon.

You recommended a minivan, which is a good idea.

But if there’s a perfect vehicle for her, I’d say it’s a Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van. It’s a great, small, easy-tohandle vehicle that’s very low to the ground. The back is all flat, with a nonslip rubber type floor, and no seats to remove. And it gets good mileage with regular 87 octane.

One downside is that it just seats two people, but I would guess a woman or man in their late 70s isn’t hauling groups of people very often.

It also has big sliding doors on both sides. Maybe you can pass this on to Holly. I think it would be perfect. I’m a guy in my late 60s with a black lab.

— Jan Is this a dating site now, Jan? You’re right. The Transit Connect has all the advantages of a minivan but smaller and without any rear seats to get in the way.

It’s a bit more — shall we say — barbaric than a minivan. It was designed as a small, bare bones delivery van.

But for Holly’s dedicated, dog-carrying purpose, it could be perfect. Good idea.

Reni Mylonas found success in 2020 as a homestead baker, dabbling in custom-order cakes and tapping into her Greek roots with pastries and cookies. Two years later, the Danville native has expanded into a new storefront in nearby Raymond, offering Greek favorites using recipes passed down in her family, along with other grab-and-go treats.

Agape Cakes & Confections, named after the Greek word meaning “love,” celebrated its grand opening April 9 with a menu of cupcakes, bars, macarons, cake popsicles and more. The new shop is in the Cozy Corner plaza on Route 27, giving Mylonas a permanent spot to sell out of for the first time. She’ll also be making authentic Greek pastries part of her regular lineup of sweets.

“My grandparents were born in Greece … and my dad was as well, so I grew up in a very Greek household,” she said. “I’ve grown up eating all these pastries, so it’s fun to share with everyone and to introduce them to those who haven’t had a chance to try some of them.”

A self-taught cake decorator, Mylonas started baking around the age of 9. She gained experience working in a few local shops along the way, most recently at Love + Flour Bakery in Salem.

When she started Agape not long after the pandemic shutdown, it was friends and family that mostly made up her customer base.

Word of her talents quickly spread through social media.

Nearly every day out of the shop’s case, available treats include six-inch and eightinch cakes; rotating flavors of cupcakes, macarons, bars, and Mylonas’s own homemade Greek baklava.

“I actually individually roll all of the pieces, so they are just like little logs, essentially, as opposed to one full tray that you cut into triangles,” she said. “It’s a bit harder to make, but I find that it’s a better product. … You also don’t want too much syrup, but you want enough where it’s coated on the inside and outside, where it’s almost moist and chewy but in a good way.”

With the help of her grandmother, Mylonas offers galaktoboureko, a custard-filled dessert wrapped in phyllo dough, as well as various types of Greek cookies, like kourabiedes (rose shortbread cookies coated in powdered sugar), koulourakia (butter cookies with a hint of vanilla) and melomakarona (spiced cookies soaked in syrup and topped with walnuts and sugar).

A wholesale area of the shop features ground and bean coffee from Coco’s Coffee, a small-batch single-origin roaster out of East Kingston. Other items for sale include Chocofreta, a brand of imported Greek chocolate bars, as well as honey sesame sticks and Greek evil eye pendants.

“It’s like a protection eye that you can hang up. We have them in our house, or you can put them on a keychain,” Mylonas said of the pendants. “It’s part of our culture [and] it’s meant to deflect negative energy. … I also have some mugs that I sell as a pack with Greek tea cookies.”

Mylonas plans to continue accepting custom cake and cupcake orders while also operating the storefront. Her next business venture for Agape will be in the form of a mobile cupcake trailer, which she hopes to have on the road to rent for private parties, weddings and public events like fairs by this summer.

take on a meatball sub featuring handmade plantbased meatballs on a hoagie roll; the spicy Thai chickpea wrap, which features a combination of chickpeas and navy beans chilled in a crunchy peanut sauce and dressed with various veggies; and the Buffalo “kitchen” nugget wrap. The play on words with the latter’s name comes from her daughter, Cheyenne, who confused the word ‘chicken’ with ‘kitchen’ as a toddler.

“The product we use for the plant-based ‘chicken nugget’ has a small amount of egg powder in it, so it’s not truly vegan. The taste and flavor are such a great alternative to chicken [that] we still wanted to offer it to folks,” LeBlanc said. “The fact that it’s a ‘kitchen’ nugget is a shy version of a chicken nugget … without me calling it that and offending a bunch of people.”

While certain menu items will be available every week, LeBlanc said she hopes to offer different specials in line with the seasonality of ingredients.

During the Taco Tour she’ll be set up at To Share Brewing Co., offering jackfruit tacos with a mango-jalapeño salsa. The April 19 event, also at the brewery, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person and will include a pint of beer and a selection of menu samples of Sleazy Vegan favorites.

Even once the food truck is ready, LeBlanc plans to continue operating out of the ghost kitchen — the goal, she said, is to make The Sleazy Vegan a reputable option for business catering.

“There are tons of businesses that have breakfast and lunch meetings and other events … that get catered all the time,” she said. “As an IT person, I used to be part of these events all the time, and there was nothing I could ever eat except for a salad. … So I really hope to be able to target businesses and I want them to understand that they can offer food [that is for] everyone.”

Directly behind Manchester’s SNHU Arena, a new ghost kitchen is serving up whole food plant-based breakfast and lunch items, with plans to soon expand into a food truck later this year.

It’s called The Sleazy Vegan, and while there’s no retail storefront, online orders are now being accepted every Wednesday through Saturday, with local deliveries within a 5-mile radius of the venue. Owner Kelley-Sue “KSL” LeBlanc hopes to offer catering on the weekends, and she’s also set to participate in some upcoming events, like a private menu tasting at To Share Brewing Co. on April 19, as well as at the Manchester Taco Tour on May 5.

LeBlanc, who grew up in Nashua and now lives on the Queen City’s West Side, officially launched public online ordering on April 1.

The Sleazy Vegan’s name origin is twofold — as she dreams of sailing, she wanted a business that could enable her to travel more. She came up with the phrase when playing around with other names that would share the “S.V.,” or sailing vessel, prefix. But the name, she added, is also reflective of her mission — bringing approachable whole food plant-based meal options to everyone regardless of their diet identity.

“People get really, really heated about the word ‘vegan,’ and I mean, it doesn’t have to mean anything bad,” LeBlanc said. “I’m not all the way vegan, but I do choose to eat whole food plantbased [meals] more often than not. … So much gets lost in the labels because they are loaded terms, with different meanings for people. I want to feed everybody great-tasting, fill-your-belly food that is good in your mouth and even better for your body and the planet.”

LeBlanc found her current kitchen space through a connection with Manchester Housing Authority and will also be feeding lunch twice a week to the residents of the building.

The online ordering menu is designed to be approachable and enticing to people of all diets — not just vegans or vegetarians. Popular breakfast options out of the gate have included scrambles and burritos made with Just Egg, a plant-based egg substitute made from mung beans; as well as steel-cut oatmeal with cinnamon and nutmeg, and chia pudding made with oat milk and vanilla.

As for lunch items, LeBlanc’s biggest winners thus far have been the “sleazeballs,” or her

Allow to cool for 10 minutes.

Add bread crumbs, Parmesan and pepper to taste.

Fill each mushroom cap with a spoonful of mixture.

Place the filled mushrooms on a wire baking rack set on top of a rimmed baking sheet.

Top each with Asiago cheese and bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

Serve immediately.

So, here’s the thing – if you asked me to describe myself, I’d say I’m a fairly regular, run-of-the-mill guy. “High maintenance” is not a phrase that springs to mind. I’m a mushroom and jalapeño pizza with a Diet Sunkist kind of guy.

And yet, “regular” and “run-of-themill” are apparently terms that cover a wide spectrum of standards.

I was talking recipes with a work friend, as one does, and mentioned this Indian dish I was really grooving on at the moment.

“What’s in it?” she asked suspiciously.

Apparently, I have a reputation.

“That’s the great thing about this,” I told her. “Aside from paneer, it’s all stuff you have around the house.”

“What’s paneer?” she asked.

“A type of Indian cheese,” I said.

“Could I use cheddar?” she asked.

“Um, not really. Anyway, you basically just need some cashews, and—” “I’m going to stop you right there,” she interrupted. “When you say ‘cashews’, do you mean those nuts that fancy people serve at cocktail parties? Who keeps those in their house? I have seriously bought cashews maybe three times in my life.”

I assured her that they were easy to find, but completely flummoxed her when I mentioned cardamom.

“I’ve never even heard of that,” she informed me.

I’m not sure why I continued to describe the dish, because our communication gap just kept widening from there.

I mention this because I tried a new cocktail recipe this week. As I read over the ingredients, I was pleased to note with each one that I had it on hand: “Pimm’s? Check. Elderflower liqueur?

Also check. Gin? Very much, check.”

As I worked my way down the list, though, I realized that aside from lime juice and ice cubes, most people would not actually have any of these ingredients.

I wonder sometimes, if anybody actually makes any of the cocktails I develop, and I’m realistic enough to concede that the more exotic ingredients I call for, the less likely anyone is to actually try one of these drinks. I tried making the new cocktail with several shortcuts and substitutions that would bring it marginally more into the mainstream, and all of the variations were fine, but not as stunningly delicious as the exotic, labor-intensive version.

So, here’s what we’ll do — take out the best gin you have and make yourself a classic gin and tonic. Drink it while you make out your shopping list. You’ll feel

braced and even a little sophisticated by the time you’re done.

Our high-maintenance drink is a riff on a cocktail called War of the Roses. I’ve taken some liberties with it, so it needs a new name. Based on the emotional scars I still have from watching the 1989 Kathleen Turner/Michael Douglas movie of the same name, I thought about calling this a Kathleen Turner Overdrive, but then I found out that there is a heavy metal band by the same name, and that’s not really the vibe I’m going for. I ended up settling for a simple, classic name: a Tudor Cocktail. The actual War of the Roses is where Henry VII defeated Richard III and became the first Tudor king of England.

Every ingredient in this drink makes its presence known. Yes, you can absolutely make this with regular gin, but the cucumber gin raises the taste to another level. I tried muddling a couple of slices of cucumber instead, and it was fine, but not as good. I also tried using cucumber syrup instead of simple syrup and that was fine too, but not transcendent.

Is this drink a project? Inarguably.

The good news is that once you’ve bought all the specialty alcohols and made the cucumber gin, you will have everything you need to drink a seriously injudicious number of these cocktails Tudor Cocktail and recover, for a brief moment, a sense Ingredients 1½ ounces Pimm’s No. 1, the liqueur of wonder and an open heart. usually used for making a Pimm’s Cup ¾ ounce cucumber-infused gin (see Cucumber gin below) Wash but don’t peel some cucumbers. ¾ ounce St. Germain elderflower The little Persian ones are really nice, liqueur but don’t stress over not finding any. Add ¾ ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice equal amounts — by weight — of cucum¼ ounce simple syrup bers and gin to a blender. Blend them on dash Peychaud’s Bitters your lowest speed. The idea here is to chop 0.4 grams fresh mint leaves the cucumbers finely enough to expose a 4 ice cubes lot of surface area to the gin, to help the infusion process. Wine Rediscover Chianti

Exploring the variations of this classic Tuscan red

Those of us of a certain age fondly remember the bottle of Chianti, wrapped in a straw basket sitting on the red-checkered tablecloth in Billy Joel’s Italian Restaurant.

The best part of that bottle of wine was, in fact, the bottle. So romantic, repurposed as a candle holder as in that back-alley spaghetti dinner of Disney’s Lady and the Tramp.

That bottle grew in texture and affection that only the wax could give it because the wine was dreadful! Is it any coincidence that “il fiasco” is Italian for a rough glass flagon, or flask, that is then wrapped in straw to protect it and allow it to stand properly?

But let’s move on to today’s Chiantis.

You will have some difficulty in finding the straw-wrapped fiasco of Chianti today.

Instead, there are bottles of Bolla Chianti lining the shelves of stores everywhere at very affordable prices. And most are vastly superior to that Chianti of 40 to 50 years ago.

Chianti is a wine to be drunk with food. Its medium body, dryness and light tannins are a superior complement to baked Italian pasta dishes, pizza or braised beef. It is not a wine to sip unless it is accompanied by Italian cheeses from mozzarella to pecorino.

It is a wine enjoyed in your college years because it’s affordably priced, but the experience shouldn’t end there. We have a line-up of three Chiantis from one winery that vary from each other significantly. And the bottles are not wrapped in straw!

Just as with other Chiantis, this wine is principally made with sangiovese grapes, with a small fraction of other varietals added to soften the hard edges of the sangiovese grapes. Chianti wine emerged in the Renaissance in the Chianti region of Tuscany, between Florence and Siena. The Chiantis we enjoy today were formulated in the third quarter of the 19th century, providing some continuity and control within the region. The terroir of Chianti varies widely, resulting in a wide range of quality. This bottle can be loosely interpreted as “entry-level D.O.C.G. Chianti” (D.O.C.G. is a designation given to wine of the highest level of quality from that region). The wine has a ruby color, and to the nose a pleasant floral note, along with a fresh but dry tongue of cherries. Upon opening, this wine has strong tannins, so it should be decanted or opened well in advance of

Our second Chianti is the 2019 Castello di Querceto Chianti Classico D.O.C.G. (originally priced at $18.99, reduced to $10.99 at the New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlets). This wine comes from vineyards in Greve in Chianti. It is matured in casks for 10 to 12 months, and then refined in the bottle for a minimum of three months. Produced from sangiovese grapes, with an addition of canaiolo grapes, it too has a ruby color, but with the slightest tinge of amber at the rim.

To the nose it has notes of cherries, but with an added hint of clove. The tannins are lighter than the first Chianti and it remains fresh to the finish. Its dry smoky flavor is a departure from the first Chianti and worth the $2 increase in cost. This vintage can be cellared for an additional five years.

Our third Chianti is the 2017 Castello di Querceto Chianti Classico Riserva D.O.C.G. (originally priced at $24.99, reduced to $12.99 at the New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlets). This wine has a nose of cherries, augmented by cassis, berries, with slight floral notes. To the tongue, the fruit is joined by the addition of walnuts and chocolate and thus it becomes richer and more complex than the earlier Chiantis. Made from grapes grown at altitudes exceeding 1,200 feet, and barrel aged for two years, this Chianti exemplifies the best of the central region of Chianti Classico.

While Chianti Classico improves with cellaring, this is a wine produced five years ago and unfortunately will only cellar for another handful of years, so purchase and enjoy this lush treat in a bottle now.

Have a little fun and treat yourself to a “horizontal tasting” of these three Chiantis.

Consider it to be a trip through Tuscany to sample the bounty of the land. You will be delighted and enriched by the experience!

Sorry, but the first thing that jumped out at me is how huge this Argentinian jazz up-and-comer’s tenor sax is.

That thing is huge, like she could probably use it as a decoy in order to use the carpool lane.

But I digress already, which isn’t fair, because lest we forget, the music’s the thing in jazz, and what a masterful collection this is, single-handedly helmed by nowadays-New Yorker Eugenio, accompanied by an upright bassist guy and a drummer. That may look a bit sparse on paper, but Eugenio fills all the space with divine runs and passages, like a kid trying to cover an entire page with their favorite crayon, rub rub rub. The CSI mostly reveals various shades of utterly charming post-bop of course, some neoswing (“Snowbirds”), and a ballad that isn’t too obligato (“For You”). She got her master’s degree at Aaron Copland School, if that makes any difference to you, but this is far from any sort of trite academic exercise. A+ — Eric W. Well, what a stop-the-presses moment this is, folks. If you and I were just being casual and you asked me what the weirdest band in the world is, chances are very good that I’d say it’s London afterparty club act The Orb, unless — OK, no, The Books are weirder, but they’re broken up. And that’s all moot anyway because of this project, which finds the Orb guys futzing with an EP’s worth of traditional blues and Ugandan rhythms originally recorded by (spoiler alert, these guys are obscure) Roland & Albert. I know, I know, who cares, but I’m telling you, these beats are completely addictive, right from the EP’s leadoff track “Squirrels In Jumpsuits,” whose mellow, urban vibe is driven by plinky guitar, ’70s synth and — because it’s The Orb, a constant stream of random dialog. It’s stuff that even I could fall asleep to on a plane, which says something, because all I think about on planes is, you know, gravity’s effect on large metal objects. Curiosity-seekers will thank me for this.

• April 15 is this Friday, I hope you will not be arrested for doing anything untoward with your tax documents. It is also a day for new albums, like the newest one from indie-rock fixture Kurt Vile, a guy I’ve been meaning to look into a little bit, and now I have no choice, because at this writing there isn’t too much else for me to talk about in the way of new releases. His influences range from the unassailable (Neil Young, Tom Petty, Dinosaur Jr.) to the unbearable (Pavement); all I really know about him is that he helped launch the band The War On Drugs in 2008, and they are still around, floating Guster-ish tunes that I have no interest in whatsoever. That doesn’t bode well for the proceedings at hand, I know, but life is always full of surprises, so I will surf over to YouTube to check out “Hey Like a Child,” a song from his new album, (watch my moves), and yes, the album title is stylized precisely like that, because tiresome gimmicks are an important ingredient in good rock ’n’ roll. Here, you’re near a phone or a computer, let’s listen to this song together. Hmm, it’s sort of Bob Dylan-ish I suppose, but he uses a weird “wobbly guitar” technique when he strums, which isn’t something I’ve heard before. That’s kind of cool, and the song is OK, if you like music that basically drones on without any ambition and has no drop or “cool part.” OK, that was enriching.

• Drum-playing human Evan J Cartwright had a good thing going with Canadian experimental-pop band U.S. Girls, whose specialty is quirky but mellow disco/soul-indie. He also had a pretty good thing going with the similarly girl-commanded quirk-folk band Weather Station, but he apparently got tired of being in good bands and has struck out on his own to release his first solo album, Bit By Bit. Ha ha, I actually like the first single, “And You’ve Got Nobuddy,” because the video has him just sitting down playing his drums, but there are no drums in the song, just a sleepy guitar, and his mouth moves along to the words, which are perfect for your favorite Generation Z doomer to laughand-cry-at-the-same-time to, viz: “I always had it in my mind that life was kidding this whole time.” I hope this strange little man gets his music on an episode of Euphoria someday, because it’d be fitting, and I’m sure he’d call it a successful career right afterward and, with any luck, never darken my door with his joke songs ever again.

• OK, hold it, no, here’s an actual band folks, look, it’s Cancer Bats, with a new album called Psychic Jailbreak, I can hardly wait to talk about an album made by an actual band that does something more than joke songs and ringtones for dairy farmers! I’d say something critic-ish like “You’d have to have been living under a rock to have never heard of Cancer Bats before,” but that wouldn’t be fair; I’m probably the only person in New Hampshire who knows that the band is a semi-cool southern-rock/sludge metal outfit. But now you know, so let’s lend an ear to the album’s title track. Hmm, it’s got some doom-metal parts, and the singer basically just yells, and then it rips off Alice in Chains’ “Would.” Yes, this is the best thing on board so far this week.

• No, don’t leave yet, I have to tell you about Los Angeles-based singing girl Primer, whose new album Incubator is already getting press attention, because I’m about to pay attention to it now! The single, “Warning,” is really cool, an ’80s-tinged chillout with really nice syncopation courtesy of a tabla sample, or so it sounds. Her voice is kind of low and really listenable. (I’m glad there was one thing I could actually recommend out of this week’s really stinky barrel of fish.) — Eric W. Saeger

The Kaiju Preservation Society, by John Scalzi (Tor, 258 pages) What kind of creature is Godzilla? If you answered “giant lizard,” you’ve got lots of company, but you’re wrong.

Godzilla and other movie monsters out of East Asia have a formal name — kaiju — which translates roughly to “strange beast.” And kaiju are at the center of the new novel by John Scalzi, a popular writer of science fiction who lives in Ohio. The Kaiju Preservation Society is a fun and engaging story that perfectly entwines the real life of the past two years with an alternative universe where kaiju dwell.

It begins with the untimely firing of Jamie Gray, a well-educated employee of a DoorDash-type startup that calls its gig workers “deliverators” and requires them to announce that it is their “passion” to deliver their customers’ vegan egg rolls and Korean fried chicken.

Jamie loses his job at the start of the pandemic and can’t find anything else, so he’s reduced to delivering for his former employer to pay his bills. One of his regular customers on the Lower East Side of New York turns out to be someone he vaguely knew, and they strike up a conversation about why a former Ph.D. candidate is now delivering food. (The sly punchline: “I was looking down the barrel of adjunct professorships for the rest of my life.”)

As it turns out, the customer, named Tom Stevens, has a job opportunity for Jamie, because one of his team members had just come down with Covid-19.

He doesn’t explain much about the job — only that it’s for an “animal rights organization” that works with large animals, and that the job requires only “a warm body that can lift things.” It turns out to be a job that pays extremely well, includes a $10K signing bonus and even covers his monthly rent and student-loan payments.

Jamie is desperate enough for a reliable income that he accepts the position with no further information. And he doesn’t back down even when the recruiting officer tells him that the animals are “very wild, very dangerous” and that death is a possible outcome of employment, so he would need a will, an alarming number of shots and a Covid test involving a “a cotton swab through my nostril all the way back to my brain.”

By this point, Jamie has established himself as a totally endearing narrator, possessed of a snarky sense of humor that could have gotten him a job as a writer for late-night TV. (When the recruiter asks if he has any dietary restrictions, Jamie says he disdains vegan cheese because it is “orange and white sadness that mocks cheese and everything

it stands for.”)

And Scalzi is a master at crafting snappy dialogue seeded with bon mots, making the story flow easily, even when it leaves the solid footing of early pandemic life in the U.S. and flies into another dimension enabled by nuclear explosions, where an Earth look-alike is populated with strange flying beasts the size of small mountains and other strange animals.

Yeah, it’s weird, and it gets even weirder when there are billionaire tourists who come to this alternative Earth to “pet the monsters.” And when a complication is revealed that threatens life on the “real” Earth, requiring Jamie to do much more than the “lifting things” he signed on to do.

It’s pretty astonishing that Scalzi was able to craft a science-fiction story that so perfectly aligns with the pandemic, while even throwing in a lot of talk about nuclear bombs, which definitely weren’t in the conversation in March 2020 but suddenly are now a foreboding part of the news. It’s even more astonishing that Scalzi wrote this one in the span of two months — February and March 2021. (There’s a super interesting back story to how that happened that Scalzi reveals in his author’s note, and that alone is worth the price of the book, especially if you’ve ever had a malign computer eat your work.)

Although there are shades of Jurassic Park here, The Kaiju Preservation Society is not preachy or brooding; it’s more like a timeline cleanser on Twitter, something light and fun and memorable. I wasn’t surprised to learn that it’s already been picked up by Fox Entertainment for serialization.

At the recent Grammy Awards, rapper Jay-Z became the artist with the most lifetime nominations, with a total 83. The person he surpassed is Quincy Jones, who had 80 nominations between 1961 and 2019.

But Jones is far from retired and is out with a new book. 12 Notes: On Life and Creativity (Abrams Image, 192 pages) is described by the publisher as a “self-development guide,” which sounds a couple of bars better than self-help. The youngest millennials may not be familiar with Jones, but they’ll know the artist who wrote the foreword, The Weeknd, who says that Jones “changed not only the course of my life, but the course of history.”

On the subject of history, there are also two new books about royalty — the American kind, and the British monarchy.

American royalty, of course, would be the Kennedys, and journalist Neal Thompson has written what looks to be an engrossing account of the first couple of that lineage to arrive on U.S. soil. Bridget and Patrick Kennedy were poor Irish Catholics, and when Patrick died of tuberculosis at age 35, his body had to be carted outside of Boston because the city didn’t allow his kind to be buried in its cemeteries.

Thompson began researching the couple after covering the plane crash that took the life of John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1999, and early reviews of The First Kennedys (Mariner, 352 pages) are great.

Then there’s Queen of Our Times, a biography of Queen Elizabeth II, by Robert Hardman. You’ll have to be a serious fan of the monarchy to get through this, coming in at 690 pages (Pegasus Books). Then again, she’s been queen for seven decades, so there was a lot to write about.

For less history and more gossip, you’ll have to wait a few weeks for Tina Brown’s The Palace Papers (Crown, 592 pages), a follow-up to her 2007 bestseller The Diana Chronicles. It releases April 26. — Jennifer Graham

Ambulance (R)

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Bay slo-mo star in Ambulance, a two-hourand-16-minute version of, like, a 9-1-1 episode.

Or 9-1-1: Lone Star. Or Station 19, which I’ve seen about 12 minutes of but I feel like I pretty much get the show — pretty people do rescues and somebody wears their hair down in a situation during which any normal lady would have secured her hair in at least a ponytail but probably a bun.

Which is to say, even though her very minimalist use of a hair claw clip is a plot point, I couldn’t help spending a lot of this movie thinking about how Los Angeles EMT Cam (Eiza González) really needed someone to give her two scrunchies and a handful of bobby pins if she’s going to be expected to get stuff done.

This movie spends unnecessary time setting up the backstories of Cam and her new partner Scott (Colin Woodell), young police officers Zach (Jackson White) and Mark (Cedric Sanders), police bank robbery division head Captain Monroe (Garret Dillahunt) and FBI bank robbery head Anson Clark (Keir O’Donnell). We see everyone mull around their day before they get to the figurative fireworks factory that is the bank robbery that sets off the action in this movie.

Brothers Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal) Sharp have a loving but friction-y relationship due to their upbringing and the father who drew them into a life of crime.

Will got out, became a decorated Marine and has a wife and a young child. Danny is still engaged in shadiness, though he constantly claims he’s not like their violent father and robbing banks is

his job, which he performs with professionalism and without hurting people.

Will’s wife, Amy (Moses Ingram), would like Will to have nothing to do with Danny but she’s also fighting an aggressive cancer and her only hope is a treatment that their insurance won’t cover. Will goes to Danny to ask for a loan to pay for the surgery but instead finds himself at that moment told to suit up to participate in a bank robbery. He reluctantly goes along with what is supposed to be a sure thing, all-set-up robbery with a huge payday.

Naturally, stuff goes wrong.

Zach, who showed up at the bank mainly to flirt with one of the tellers, is taken hostage. The truck meant to transport Danny’s crew post-robbery gets stuck near Mark, who then realizes what’s happened in the bank. The situation quickly becomes a shoot-out, with Mark joined in

firing at the robbers by other police officers under the command of Captain Monroe who had been watching the bank and didn’t intervene at first because they wanted to catch the robbers after they left.

Eventually, Danny’s men are struck down, their means of escape is blocked and he and Will are stuck in a parking garage. They decide their only way out is to hijack the ambulance that’s come to rescue Zach, whom Will accidentally shot during a scuffle between Zach and Danny.

Will, Danny, Cam and the severely wounded Zach manage to get away from the scene but are soon being chased across Los Angeles as Cam tries to save Zach and Will and Danny try to figure a way out of their situation.

all intercut scenes of car crashes and Cam doing battlefield triage. It’s not good but it’s engaging and watchable, sort of in the way you can sometimes eat a fast food fried chicken sandwich and know that you’re eating something “not good,” not even all that tasty, but also still find it momentarily satisfying. The attempts by the movie to make us care about certain characters also feel strangely uneven because it’s Gyllenhaal who is giving the most compelling performance (kind of a good-natured sociopath whom I enjoyed watching even if I didn’t really for a minute care about him) while Cam and Will are the people the movie wants us to empathize with. I found myself character-wise most interested in random police lady Dzaghig (Olivia Stambouliah) and her banter with Monroe, a character who feels like he’s given too big a helping of personality before he’s sort of shrugged off in the movie’s final third.

Despite all of this and the at least 35 unnecessary minutes of padding that help to push this movie past the two-hour mark, Ambulance wasn’t a bad watch. It keeps you right there with the in-the-second action, it has some plot fun with its cops and robbers pursuit and it makes very little sense if you stop to think about any element of it but it all works well enough as you’re watching the chase go from freeway to side street to paved river bed that you feel entertained enough to continue the ride. BRated R for intense violence, bloody images (like, seriously bloody, in-moving-vehicle surgery-type bloody) and language throughout, according to the MPA on filmratings.com. Directed by Michael Bay with a screenplay by Chris Fedak (based on a movie called Ambulancen), Ambulance is two hours and 16 minutes long and distributed by Universal Studios.

Faith Ann Band celebrates new album

As it touches on a myriad of musical moods, from tuneful grunge to full-throttle rockers and tender ballads, there’s a clear thread running through In Bloom, the second album from the Faith Ann Band: raw, naked emotion. More precisely, it’s a crackling live wire, shooting furious sparks and sparing no one.

Two minutes of rage, the breakneck-paced “Miller Time” exemplifies this, as a would-be suitor is sneered away with a dismissive line. “I wouldn’t be you for all of the sh-t you could possibly shove in my face,” band leader Faith Ann Mandravelis sings.

Another standout, “Jungle Law” is a credo of sorts. “I ain’t no live-in house pet,” she sings, “I don’t sit pretty.” Odious corporate dronage is drubbed on songs like “Songbird” and “Reaper,” a backward glance at the singer-songwriter’s entrance into music; she quit a job as an engineer to become a math teacher.

“I saw like what day-to-day life was doing to people in an office environment,” she said in a recent phone interview.

One of her students had a band, which inspired her to start hitting the open mic scene around Manchester and Concord.

“As I was writing my songs, I found a lot of healing,” she said. “Giving myself permission to speak up was huge, after having been kind of in the shadows of my musician boyfriend and not really ever feeling like I was worthy enough.”

Buoyed by this newfound courage, Faith Ann hit the road for shows in the South and headed west to play in Arizona. The response to her music led to an epiphany.

broken but things that are not … that have just never been used,” she said. “Brushing those off, as a way to bring ourselves back to being inspired by life.”

Her first album was 2020’s Long Last — “Which is pretty much a statement: Finally, I’ve broken out of my shell,” she said. “I’ve stopped letting myself be contained, pushed down and ashamed for my past, and as soon as you own it, you find an acceptance of yourself.”

The only musician from the debut still in the band is bass player Alfredo Benavides. Concord guitarist Mike Stockbridge and drummer Alex Hershman helped make In Bloom, but someone new will take over the drum kit soon. Axile Beighley, who plays with Benavides in Manchester band Dank Sinatra, serves as a fifth member at live shows, like the release party coming up on April 16 at Strange Brew Tavern.

“Feral” is one of the words Faith Ann uses to describe her approach to music.

“I mean it as a way to staying true to the parts of ourselves that are unclaimed territory, that haven’t been cultivated,” she explained. “It’s the

parts of us that are the most raw. Whatever you might say unkind about yourself, these are part of the things I do that I enjoy. I don’t need to justify them to anybody.”

As a relative newcomer to the local scene, she finds the New Hampshire music community a welcoming one. She’s paired up with many local bands, and has several shows on the horizon. She’ll support Andrew North & the Rangers at Penuche’s in Concord on May 7, and play at the Market Days event the following month. In July she and her band host a festival of her own called Level Up Get Down at Auburn Pitts. It will include Big Sandy, Chodus, Tumbletoads, The Humans Being and Dank Sinatra.

“Everyone I have played with is super-supportive, and everybody wants to see everyone succeed,” she said. “I don’t think I have ever really heard of anyone bashing on any other musician, because there’s just this understanding of how much guts it takes and how vulnerable you are to do it. People don’t always go out of their way to invite you in their little realm, but once you’re in there, everyone wants to help you out.”

The Glitter Twins, Sarah Franks, 29, and Kaitlin O’Donovan, 27, have had their charges dropped in Clearwater, Florida, after a January incident in which they “glitter bombed” one Jacob Colon at 3 a.m. at his home, The Smoking Gun reported on April 5. Franks and O’Donovan, who are married, allegedly threw glitter containers at Colon as he stood on the balcony of his apartment, then entered his home and further assaulted him with glitter, police said, but prosecutors concluded that “the facts and circumstances revealed do not warrant prosecution at this time.” The “twins” had been free on bond since their arrest for felony burglary. Colon said he had at one time been involved with them, but that it had ended before the incident took place.

Crime report

It may not be Easter yet, but Mr. Bunny is already making it into the headlines. In Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, a 27-year-old man was in the process of robbing a business on March 31 when an employee tried to thwart him, the CBC reported. But the thief was armed with a Mr. Solid brand chocolate Easter bunny, which he used to hit the employee.

The shoplifter escaped but was found nearby and arrested; the employee suffered only minor injuries. The stolen merchandise was later returned to the store.

Niche crime

Seattle police were called to a downtown art gallery on April 5 after a man who claimed to have a knife stole an ancient mammoth tusk valued at several thousand dollars, KOMO-TV reported. The thief then escaped in a stolen plum-colored PT Cruiser, police said. Gallery owners said the theft is the second incident in recent weeks; the shop also carries fine-art sculptures. Investigators were hoping to recover the tusk, and the gallery is planning to hire more security guards.

A strange sight greeted residents of a rural area of Kansas on April 5: a mobile home resting smack in the middle of a gravel road, with no owner (or resident) in sight. The Kansas City Star reported that the home was found in southern Labette County, and the sheriff’s office made a request via Facebook for the public’s help in identifying the owner of the mobile home. Of course, theories ran wild among Facebook users. “Maybe they are on house arrest and needed to go somewhere,” one user said. In the early evening on April 6, the sheriff’s office announced that they had found the owner of the abandoned mobile home, and it was later revealed that blown trailer tires during transport were to blame for its temporary abandonment.

Dangerous work

The night shift workers at the Mr. Chips french fry factory in East Tamaki, New Zealand, received a bit of a shock as 28 tons of russet potatoes from a farm in nearby Matamata worked their way through the factory’s conveyor belts. What appeared to be just another muddy potato was discovered to be a World War II-era hand grenade. “The guys were really calm and collected and they reacted in an extremely professional manner,” Roland Spitaels, the factory’s operations manager, told Stuff.co.nz. Police responded to the scene and subsequently called upon the New Zealand Defence Force’s explosive ordnance disposal team, who removed the grenade from the facility; X-rays revealed it was a training version of a hand grenade, containing no explosives.

Alex Trejo, a reptile expert and owner of So-Cal Rattlesnake Removal, got more than he’d bargained for in a recent house call — about 7 feet more. While most folks never find anything more interesting than spare change in their couch cushions, one Chula Vista resident found a snake: a 7-foot-long Vietnamese blue beauty rat snake, to be precise. “This guy calls me, is pretty frantic and he’s like, ‘There’s a snake in my couch,’” Trejo told ABC 10 News in San Diego. Trejo said he was shocked to find such a beast in a sofa, calling it a “once in a lifetime snake rescue” in a Facebook post. The species is nonvenomous, is not native to the United States, and was apparently not interested in being captured. The snake is in the care of a specialist, receiving treatment for a respiratory infection. The animal’s owner has not yet been located.
