HEN SOMEONE IN THE GREATER CHARLESTON AREA SAYS ‘the train station’ it is understood they are referring to the Amtrak station nestled under the ramp of the South Side Bridge. In years past, however, it could have meant one of several. Freight trains had various docks to unload their provisions in town. And the New York Central System train line entered West Virginia at Point Pleasant and followed the east bank of the Kanawha River through Nitro and into Charleston. Its Charleston passenger station was near what is now the Capitol Market, and the market building itself was the old freight house. The roundhouse for the NYC line was located near what is now Green’s Feed and Seed. Beginning in 1925, the NYC train, the Beeliner, transported school children back and forth daily from school in Charleston. Navigating thirty-four miles of winding hills, it stopped to drop off or pick up children at twenty-one points between Charleston and Hitop, an unincorporated town in Kanawha County. Today, the only Charleston passenger train station is home to Amtrak. The building’s owner, General Corporation, is a tenant, along with one of Charleston’s most elegant dining destinations, Laury’s Restaurant. Built in 1905 for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O), the twostory Neo-Classical Beaux-Arts style structure is of blonde brick and stone construction. The front, which overlooks the Kanawha River, features a portico of paired Roman Doric columns, and a low hipped, tile-covered roof with bracketed deep eaves. The principal architects, J.C. and A.L. Pennock, included a grand staircase to the secon oor hile no nion or ran entral tation the Charleston station holds her own as a lovely example of transportation architecture.

CSX Transportation owns the tracks adjacent to the Charleston Depot. West Virginia’s largest carrier, CSX Transportation has 1,113 route miles of track. The West Virginia rail system is comprised of two Class I railroads and eleven short line or regional railroads. The system contains 2,401 route miles of track. Norfolk Southern is next in size with 801 route miles of track. Short lines and regional rail lines make up the remaining 487 route miles of track. Passenger train service through Charleston comprises scant few of the trains rumbling past the station. When passengers arrive and check in, they no longer use the opulent lobby, but rather a one-story addition to the east side of original structure. Functional, it serves its purpose. But bringing back the days of sophisticated train travel, it does not. But when you stand on the platform, you glance at your watch with anticipation as travelers have done in the very same spot for decades. Looking down the shining rails waiting for your train, time falls away and the adventure of traveling by rail remains as exciting as in years gone by. All aboard!

Next month we travel to Charleston’s west side and the Glenwood Mansion, one of the city’s loveliest homes.

The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Chesapeake and Ohio Depot in 1984, and underwent substantial renovation in 1987. The station was purchased in September of 2010 by General Corporation, a commercial real estate company based in Charleston. Charleston is served by the Amtrak Cardinal which travels triweekly between Chicago and Washington, DC. Westbound riders board on Sunday, Wednesday, Friday and eastbound passengers on Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. In recent weeks, dialog has begun that proposes extending the Cardinal’s schedule to a daily run.

M. Lynne Squires is the author of the award-winning book Letters to My Son – Reflections of Urban Appalachia at Mid-Century. Her blog The View from My Cup, is found at www.mlynne.com.

In Charleston’s early years, rail service enabled the export of the Kanawha Valley’s abundance of natural resources. Natural salt brine ells ere isco ere alon the ana ha i er an the first salt furnace was erected in Malden toward the last years of the s rillin for salt brine the areas first natural as ell as struck in 1815, followed by the discovery of coal two years later. These provided fuel for the salt works. Kanawha Valley salt and coal became major exports from Charleston.

In my advertising, I've always mentioned, and hopefully in servicing my clients, I've always shown, that I do go beyond the sale. Now, by becoming a Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices affiliate, it is even easier to bring more tools and services to the table. The brand will almost double the internet presence of our listings and will greatly produce more numbers of referral business to my fellow co-workers. So what does Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices mean to you? It's simply a worldwide network of professional brokers that can assist you with all of your property acquisitions. As one who is learning more and more daily about commercial sales & property management, the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices network is one of the largest in the industry. It has almost immediately allowed me to reach out to more and more national and international brands and corporations. I can now provide, through our network, real estate services in 37 countries and 5 continents. For example, if your company is looking to grow, and locate outside WV or National borders, I can help through our Berkshire Hathaway network. I'm actively seeking decision makers whom can sign exclusive representation agreements by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. These agreements will allow us to take care of their real estate needs throughout this country and around the world. I know there aren't too many corporate headquarters located in Charleston, WV, that are looking for a footprint in another country, but I do know we have folks here who work for some companies whom are experiencing growth and expansion. Sometimes, in this business, as well as others, we simply don't ask. . .so I'm asking. I want your business. Over the last couple of months, I closed the old Steak & Ale Property in Kanawha City, the new Kroger Gas Lot at Lee & Pennsylvania, and now presently working on another commercial transaction in Kanawha City and 70 Acres in Teays Valley. This month, I've listed the 3.2 million dollar Byard Trust Building at 408 Leon Sullivan Way, Charleston, WV 25301, 720 Beech Avenue, Charleston, WV 25302, and 634 Grant Street (former Judy's Locksmith). As far as nationals, I'm presently looking for good restaurant and retail sites all over West Virginia. Even in this economy, there are those whom are still looking for commercial properties. You may notice that I may take on residential properties. The commercial property alone, at this point, is not financially substantial enough to just turn the residential down. I do however, have several co-listing agents for the residential. My sister, Melody Jordan has just come on, and will be assisting me as well with most of my residential properties. I can't duplicate myself, but she is someone that not only represents the company well, but also has my same values and work ethics. She is a real asset to have. In closing, I always like to address that one, whom is not from this area. Dear sir or ma'am, if I can do anything for you, just let me know. I will take you for a tour of our great City and show you some of the attractions and landmarks. I'm a real believer in West Virginia. If you are a business owner, I would highly recommend you investing in a footprint in this State. As always, be careful out there, and keep this Nation in your prayers. Together is the only way we make it through.

any parents of children diagnosed with autism spectr m disorder may often find themsel es asking “why?” Why would a child engage in beha ior that o twardly seems to ser e no p rpose s ch as in ring themsel es or repetiti e o sessi e ro tines and rit als What do they get o t of it Well the short answer is that all of s whether on the a tism spec tr m or not ha e reasons for doing the things that we do. Granted those reasons may not always e clear t that doesn’t change the fact that ultimately there are nderlying ca ses for e ery eha ior that we engage in. eha ior partic larly for indi id als who ha e diffic lty e pressing themsel es can also e a form of comm nica tion. herefore it stands to reason that if we can identify the root ca se or f nction of the eha ior then we may e a le to either increase eha ior that is eneficial or decrease eha ior that is pro lematic.

S 1

o what dri es a child with to eha e in a cer tain way? Let’s take a look at the four main categories that acco nt for what shapes eha ior.

scape or a oidance ften a child with will en gage in diffic lt eha ior in order to a oid a tas that they find npleasant. For e ample if throwing a tan tr m gets them o t of a sit ation that they disli e then that tantrum may be their way of saying “I don’t want to.” his is partic larly tr e if the tantr ms ha e een effec ti e in the past. ttention see ing any children find that negati e attention is prefera le to no attention at all. herefore if a child is loo ing for interaction with parents teachers si lings or peers they may ha e learned that the ic est way to get the attention they see is to engage in eha ior that forces people to pay atten tion to them.

3 4

ee ing access to tangi les y tangi les mean things that a child can to ch play with or taste. f a child has limited com m nication s ills they may e fr strated y their ina ility to properly as for what they want so they may resort to ad eha ior so that they can get what it is they desire.

ensory stim lation ometimes eha ior that we find pro lematic eha ior can e the res lt of a child attempting to satisfy a sensory need. For e ample a child may ang their head against walls or the floor eca se they are o erwhelmed y the amo nt of information their rain is attempting to process and this eha ior may help to drown o t the e tra information their senses are e posed to. child may h m or ma e repetiti e noises for the same reason.

W

For e ample a child may scream on the playground in order to get attention and scream at home to a oid an npleasant re est. child may in re themsel es at school to a oid lea ing a preferred acti ity and may engage in the same eha ior at home to help them self reg late their sensory needs. ltimately it is diffic lt to address pro lem eha ior when we don’t know the function or the reason why they are doing the things that they do so the first step is to determine what the child is getting o t of the eha ior and start there.

Darin Fisher Designer Kitchens If you have ever watched a home design show on television, it’s quite likely you have seen a home remodel you’ve lusted after a bit. Perhaps you dream of ridding your home of old Formica, metal cabinets, dull tile floors, and other outdated style nightmares. You don’t have to long for your turn on Property Brothers to enjoy new, updated, stylish components of a well-appointed home. You only need visit Darin Fisher Designer Kitchens, located at 1404 Kanawha Boulevard East. Even though you walk in with only a design desire (or dilemma!), you can leave with a project vision. Offering over 40 years of design experience, Darin Fisher and fellow designers, Liz Bonar and Cory Stout, walk you through the design process from inception to completion. All three have degrees in design, each with specific training. While box stores may have a staff ‘designer’, more often than not they have little to no formal design education. Perhaps the homeowner’s biggest fear is the cost of having a designer involved. Darin Fisher Designer Kitchens enjoys the reputation as the most elite choice for kitchen design in the Kanawha Valley and beyond. Their name is synonymous with quality. But let’s be clear, quality is not synonymous with high dollar pricing. Fisher says this about quality: “Quality means excellence in how you achieve something, conduct one’s self and the nature of how the product is finished.” As daunting as remodeling or new construction can be, Darin Fisher Designer Kitchens staff works with each homeowner within their budget, reducing the stress immeasurably. As they work to achieve the client’s desired outcome, their goal is to provide step by step guidance within a given budget.

Focal

Point

Working with existing homes, sometimes homes fifty, sixty or more years old, the challenge becomes blending the modern with the existing architectural elements. Fisher and team assists the client in making the best decisions to maintain the integrity of the home’s design, future resale value of the home, and their lifestyle. Don’t be mislead by the idea Darin Fisher Designer Kitchens strictly works with kitchen design. They also turn their attention to bathrooms, laundry rooms, media walls, home or business offices, entertainment centers, and mudrooms. Their website www.dfdkkitchens.com, or Facebook page (facebook.com/dfdkkitchens) features a stunning visual array of their work. Perhaps a telling sign of their quality of work is how frequently realtors include ‘Darin Fisher kitchen’ in the descriptions of their sale properties. Those three words reflect a mark of excellence for any home and assures the prospective buyer of professional design and quality products.

In Fisher’s words, “With over forty years of experience, our goal at DFDK is to have a satisfied customer who loves their new kitchen and is proud to The hot trend in home design today? Open con- show it off.” And after all, isn’t that the homeowners cept. The formal living room /dining room floor plan goal as well? has given way to more common space inclusive of the kitchen. Fisher and staff see area home owners “pushing hard for more open spaces as much as possible.” The kitchen is often thought of as the heart of any home. Agreeing, Fisher says, “the house centers around the kitchen, and clients want to see and be ‘in’ the kitchen from every part of the living areas.” SEPTEMBER 2016 | Charleston Home & Living 7

The Horrors of Poor Interior Design Mistakes Thinking that this might be a good time to get the house in order as the holidays are soon upon us. It occurs to me that some simple reminders might help avoid the scary attempts to make the home “a great place to live”! Here are a few that may help!

Against the Wall

I often am asked to come to the home to hang art. Fear of getting it wrong makes a lot of clients leave undone. Keeping art at an average height level is always good. Strange vertical positions may very well leave the content unnoticed while the placement is the only thing seen. It is NOT NECESSARY to have art on every wall. A colleague once gave me a statement I use often! “Give the eye a place to rest!”

The CORN MAZE Effect

So you can’t comfortably get thru the space? If you’re room is not balanced by including consideration for function, that will likely be the case! Think about how you use the space and be real about it! Consider everyday use vs maximum use of the space. Consider the reality of pets, kids… LIFE! It it doesn’t work well, there will be $%#) to pay. The Devil’s in the details!

5 sources of artificial light are what I usually recommend for a well-balanced room. Natural light (or lack of) will always be a factor but you will quickly make an impact by using up-lights, task lights, and other ambient light. Try NOT to keep lighting around the walls and always balance overhead with lamp lighting. Dimmers are a great way to control the amount!

Every year we concentrate to have the hippest, coolest, and most trendy outfit as we head into the gatherings which typically begin with Halloween. Suggestion: Leave this idea to the personal attire and focus more toward timeless style in the home. After all, most of us would more easily afford adding the carved pumpkin. Investment pieces should always have the ability to remain long after the holiday! A great way to embellish a sofa would be to add colors, patterns and theme pillows that say, “YES! I am aware of the season!”

The Scary Place

MAKING HOME a better place to live

Is the one where you have all that “stuff” you no longer need. When it’s at a point that you didn’t even realize you still had it in the closet or on that shelf, you should let go! Clutter is the quickest way to create an unattractive home. LESS IS MORE! Enjoying pieces for a time does not mean we are now tied to the stake! Benefit from letting go so you might be able to feel better in your space!

Killing It

Get real people. If you are not considering the fact that kids will be kids and small children will run into furniture every time they get a chance, you are fooling yourself. One of the discussions I have in my initial meetings with clients is the kids and the pets. I cannot control what happens after I am done but I can help you avoid mistakes! Sharp corners and children are magnets. Consider the use of wood rather than glass when appropriate.

Think about the better selections for fabrics that wear better for the cat that scratches or the teens that have friends over to spill on the new sofa! Make sure to live comfortably in your home during the busy seasons ahead starting with that upcoming Halloween Party. Proactive thinking when you work out the space will be appreciated!

The Haunted House

I’ve seen it and heard about it a million times. We’ve all experienced it. A home without a plan is usually a hodge-podge of things trying aimlessly to appear and work as best it can. With no thought, pieces are purchased and then made to work. It’s an easy fix. Work from a plan! ALWAYS. Think about the function, your style, how long you want the plan to work, and the cost of making “IT” happen! Recently, planning a new family room for a client, we discussed what would happen when they decide to say good-bye to the ping-pong table. We now have options so that the work we do now will also accommodate decisions down the road. Think about it first folks!

Enjoying the holidays as they begin to head our way over the next few weeks! Make that home a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE! And, if it feels good… YOU’VE done a great job! OCTOBER 2016 | Charleston Home & Living 31
