WHY NOT VINYL SIDING? While vinyl siding is not for everyone, millions of American homeowners have decided that it’s exactly right for them. Vinyl siding is sold by most Building Material Distribution centers and Specialty Houses Like Building & Remodeling Warehouse who normally keeps 15-18 colors in stock. Each Siding box comes with Do It Yourself Instructions for Installing in case you feel like being an overachiever. Vinyl can be a great alternative to regular house paint, and it does a good job of dressing up problem walls, and is a very affordable alternative to stone or brick. Today they even make Vinyl Siding in various dimensions and colors that looks like wood shakes, round shingles, and stone. Part of the design dilemma is that vinyl expands and contracts a good deal with changes in temperature. A standard 12-ft. length can be 1/2 to 5/8 in. shorter on a very cold day as compared to a very hot day. For this reason, vinyl must be cut short and nailed loose. In fact, you should be able to slide every full length side to side at least 1/2 in. after it’s installed. The trim pieces made to conceal the ends accommodate these variations quite well. Make sure you have a good surface to install your vinyl siding to. If you are going over old ood siding e reco end the installation of a insulated foa oard first. his ill help even out the wall surface while also adding some R value to the wall. The Valley When people mention living in the Valley or Putnam County, some cringe at the thought of having to make the drive. To that I ask. . .”Really?” If you have lived anywhere beyond our West Virginia borders, you will realize how spoiled most of us are, when it comes to our traveling time to work. Scott Depot exit is roughly 20 minutes away from downtown Charleston, Teays Valley around 22 minutes, and a solid 25 for Hurricane. So as I sit here at Fireside Grille Restaurant, sippin’ some of the best real lemonade around, I realize why the Valley continues to grow. Folks like Judy Sydenstricker, had the vision and plan to take a failed previous restaurant site, and turn it into a destination for all. Fireside Grille Restaurant is locally owned and hires from within the local community. Guys if you’ve never been there, it’s worth the visit if you’re looking for a great meal experience. Come hungry and bring backup if you do the chicken pasta. They are located just off exit 39 from I64. If you are looking for something exceptional, Wine Valley is located off the same exit in Liberty Square. Dez, also owner of The Block in Charleston, has one of the best selections of cheese and wines in the area. Wine Valley also has some wonderfully prepared dishes created by the kitchen’s chef. So why not live in an area where you have several National Blue Ribbon Public & Private Schools? Both AAA Hurricane and AA Winfield High Schools are places in which you know your kids are getting educated by some of the finest teachers in America. They not only teach your kids, they actually care about each and every one of them. For those of you looking for a place to call home, Putnam County also have subdivisions comparable to the Presidential or the Quarry Creeks of Charleston. The major difference is your going to get a bit more home per square foot and many of the parcels are much more level. I personally give a thumbs up to those businesses looking to plant roots in the area, as I used

to serve on the Putnam Planning Board of Zoning & Appeals. This of course was a great experience, which allowed me to see first hand, some of the challenges faced by new businesses and developers. To the HR folks, in all fairness, make sure you don’t mark off Putnam County for that next employee. Everyone doesn’t fit into that same box. Most folks moving into the area from a major city won’t mind at all driving 20-25 minutes to work. To the commercial developers, build it and they will come. Most recently, Aldi, O’Reillys, Five Guys, Panera Bread, and a few others I can’t mention just yet, have all realized this. Before closing, I’d like to say that Putnam County and various other law enforcement agencies do a wonderful job keeping Putnam County communities some of the safest around. I’d also like to send an open invitation to those looking to move into the area. I will not only show you the different neighborhoods, but I will also hopefully give you an experience that you’ll never forget, that helps you make your decision. I promise that I will never sell you anything, but I will provide you with enough facts and options to assist you in making one of the most important purchases you, your family, or business ever make. I know I’ve mostly been talking about the Putnam County area, but I do have to let everyone know about Trampoline & Sensory City. This will affect us all in one way or another. The special part is not the portion like the Skyzone, but the Sensory City portion. This portion will contain special swings, lying swings, smaller bed trampolines, ball pits, sensory room, and a physical therapist to assist. I could write a whole article on this. Simply call Michelle Steele at 304 553-2294 for more info. They need more corporate sponsorship and donations. So if anyone is looking to donate to a great cause, this one has your name it. I’ll see you out there on the street. Be careful, and always be aware of your surroundings. As a retired Charleston Police Lieutenant, it’s hard to break old habits. Thanks for all of your support.

...at the Holly Grove Mansion

f the Holly Grove mansion was listed in the real estate section of the paper it might read something like this… ”Thirteen room, three story beauty located on prime corner lot. River view. Near main travel arteries.” The difference et een toda and hen it as first uilt is onl a atter of some two hundred years. Of course, in 1815, when it was built there wasn’t another stately mansion next door. Nor was there a plethora of large buildings outside the back door. Their closest neighbor wasn’t the governor.

Today the prime Kanawha Boulevard address of the Holly Grove is the anchor of the state capitol complex. But the grand lady of the city used to be the plantation home for acreage that encompassed the east end and much of the downtown area. The property that now is the beautiful home to the state Capitol building, Cultural Center and numerous other buildings used to include the barns, shops, a granary and other buildings necessary to support a large plantation and workers. The Holly Grove, also known as the Ruffner Mansion, or Holly Grove Inn is reputed to be the oldest house in the city of Charleston. Built in 1815 by Daniel Ruffner, a son of pioneer salt maker Joseph Ruffner. Advertised as an inn because of its many rooms, it was a stopping point for weary travelers from the James River and Kanawha Turnpike. The advertisement Ruffner wrote to attract travelers to his inn read as follows: “The subscriber has opened a house of private entertainment at his commodious residence, situate one mile and a half from the town of Charleston on the road leading thence to Lewisburg. Every effort will be made to render the lodging of the traveler comfortable, and his diet palatable. His pastures are extensive and corn abundant. He will therefore be amply prepared to accommodate cattle or hog merchants. For travelers on horseback, or in carriages, he will be able to furnish good stables well supplied with all kinds of provender for horses.” Along with providing lodging for travelers and purveyors of livestock, famous guests included Henry Clay, Daniel Boone, John J. Audubon, a young Samuel Houston, and President Andrew Jackson. hen first uilt the oll ro e as a t o stor rectangular brick building with a small entry portico facing the Kanawha River. including the addition of a two-story, half-circle portico with massive columns, as well as extending the attic to create a third story.

The Holly Grove Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. In 1975, it was purchased the state to house state agencies and offices. n 00 concerns over lack of adequate handicapped access or updated fire protection led the state to o e agencies housed there else here. n 00 the est irginia epart ent of Administration committed money for renovating the interior and exterior of the mansion. The Holly Grove is an important piece of Charleston’s history. It is perfectly situated to become a showpiece sitting in the shadow of the golden Capitol dome. Although its destiny is uncertain, its past should guarantee future as a gem in the state’s crown.

The Holly Grove is one of dozens of buildings that look across the Kanawha Boulevard to enjoy the Kanawha River. The only building on the river side of the boulevard is the stately Union Building, where Looking Back visits next month. JULY 2016 | Charleston Home & Living 11

HOT Design Trends for a HOT Summer Considering the subjectivity of Design, it is always interesting to find out what others find to be the Trend, the Movement, and the direction for our work. Predictions are that and truly ONLY that! While we will spend time considering HOT TRENDS for Design 2016, I find it critically important that we always focus on the personality, the function, and the tone or attitude of our home to make it (home) A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE! One of the current Trends for 2016 is a move toward Minimalism. The idea that we have room to breathe is created by spaces that allow freedom of physical movement and opportunities for the eye to rest. While it seems that all elements of a room are now VERY MUCH a work of art, it is

important that we also take advantage the Minimalist idea to afford more opportunities for appreciation of what is in the space. As a big fan of Chair Design, for example, I find that most chairs offer solutions for function as well as an opportunity to express personality and balance to the tone of our creation. These pieces of art allow for the "less is more" idea! Another HOT TREND for the year is the movement that shows Mid Century Modern resurge to combine with a more eclectic feeling! A lot of what we love about very well defined look of the late 50's and early 60's, we have (re)discovered the issues involved... mainly comfort! design. While the direction has recently been very colorful, it is interesting to note that 2016 Color TREND shared spots with very soft (almost non-color) colors. The use of harmonic shades combined with the use of light, both natural and artificial, provide many opportunities to design more sophisticated and interesting layouts! Using a punch of color still allows for the all important Balance!

DAVE COOPER Space Planning & Interior Design

Dave Cooper 304-539-8592

The eclectic attitude toward this Trend will not only allow us to create more comfortable environments, but also wonderful opportunities to bring in heirlooms and sentimental pieces that have been tucked out-of-site during the Mid Century revival! As a fan of clean lines and this period of style, I know that there are often times that I evaluate the level of comfort as well!

MAKING HOME a better place to live

Also, the recent direction toward Customization will surely continue to grow! The ability to work with more options is a great way bring our personality into the effort! We can also address the Trends toward comfort and style and the obvious patterns and colors to define our space! Finally, consider the Trend toward comfort as mentioned before but maybe in ways that are an exciting surprise! Heated floors and a movement back toward florals and patterns, and the exit of stainless steel are all ways to show and interest in more comfortable ideas rather than the somewhat industrial feelings of prior years! Enjoy your home is always Rule #1 and making sure that the work you do in your effort to have that perfect comfortable home environment is stylish and timeless! Have fun!

The next 2016 TREND that I see as important is the consideration of color in our
