Happening Around Town

As the rains came and our majestic mountain state experienced the wrath of what the National Weather Service has deemed a “1,000 Year Flood”, Charlestonians gathered and did what we do. We worked flood relief during the day, then experienced respite however we could. Fortunately, although Haddad Riverfront Park was underwater for a couple of weeks, “Live on the Levee” and FestivALL still carried on and thousands of us found how much music can heal.

As summer rolls on, there are many opportunities to enjoy live music outdoors, stroll through downtown enjoying the monthly ArtWalk or take part in various sporting events. Charleston will be hosting SportsFest Aug. 19-21. There are several 5-K’s and the famously infamous and “hillacious” Charleston Distance Run, which is celebrating its 44th annual race. The Civic Center will also be the venue for a Jesus Fest and a God Bless America Rally.

All Lives Matter I thought long and hard about which REAL ESTATE topic to write about this month; but after all of the violence in America over the past few weeks, I felt as though, with my background that I have a certain responsibility to share my THOUGHTS on this subject. I thought long and hard about which REAL ESTATE topic to write about this month; but after all of the violence in America over the past few weeks, I felt as though, with my background that I have a certain responsibility to share my THOUGHTS on this subject. I’ll start by saying “ALL LIVES MATTER”. As a young man growing up in Rand West Virginia the same as so many other young men, we were taught to respect all AUTHORITY figures, especially our police, teachers, and elderly. They were simply extensions of the family. Guns in our home were something we knew we didn’t touch, unless going hunting. Grand Theft Auto and KILLING people, war and battle games wouldn’t even be allowed in most homes and the internet was a set of Encyclopedia Books. OVER the last 20 years, I’ve seen more and more violence being shown on the internet and TV, as if it were a normal soap opera series. We’ve had a whole generation grow up surrounded by violence in games, on television, but especially on their personal mobile devices. THIS has caused a shift in the value of LIFE and our perceptions of reality when it comes to normality. AS AN OFFICER who started as a patrolman and ended my career as a lieutenant, I saw more than my fair share of lost lives. I, along with so many others, dedicated our lives to BRIDGING the gap between the community and the police department. This of course doesn’t mean that I never saw situations which could’ve been handled differently while subduing a suspect where temper took over

professionalism. However, this does mean, I can personally say, I don’t know of any officer in West Virginia that is TRIGGER happy and waiting for an opportunity to shoot someone. Don’t be mistaken, most officers that I know would sacrifice his or her LIFE for a stranger, but will take out any threat, if threatened with deadly FORCE. That should not be a shock. IT IS IN THESE TIMES that we have to come together, and keep all lines of communication open, between law enforcement and the community. BELIVE it or not, there is no US and THEM. We as officers, just as teachers and clergy, are all part of the communities. So I’ll put a name on a couple of faces. Mrs. Ivan Lee, Dallas Staples, Brent Webster, Lt. Johnson CPD Drug Unit, Capt Ted Teddie Malone, Lt Davis, Det. Eddie Whitehead, Det. Steve Cooper, Keith Peoples, E. Randall, James Rollins, Det. Winkler, Jeff Setzer, Matt Webb, George Henderson, Trooper Bennett, Trooper Bolland, Sheriff Steve DeWeese, TJ Dillon, Major DeBord DNR…just to name a few. These folks have served, and some still serving. They, like so many others, will be, and have been there, in your time of need. I’ve seen it time and time again… West Virginia KEEP on supporting and showing love to one another. Being involved with the flood EFFORTS has strengthened my FAITH in the West Virginia people as a whole. Remember, it’s not a black or white thing out there. It’s not this race against that race. UNITED and LOVING one another, is the only way we stand. There is no room for hate and violence, regardless of the color. PLEAE PRAY for the families affected by the recent lives lost on the streets of America, and those affected by the recent flooding in West Virginia. LET US NOT FORGET... our Nation and way of life is under attack from terrorists abroad, and domestically. They are the true enemies of all AMERICANS. “Semper Fi”

Making Home A Great Place To Live! Or... Is It?

You’ve spent lots or time and energy putting together that perfect space and now it’s a couple months later.

HOW’S IT WORKING FOR YOU? Designer. The value they bring in terms of savings in money & time may be much greater than you anticipate! f the home is NOT a great place to live, the mark has been missed and the result will be a constant reminder every time you enter the space. Make an effort to consider what you like and don’t like about the current space. Take time (when possible) to live in the space BEFORE committing to the investment involved in furnishing the space. Next PRIORITIZE! Make sure that the room(s) used the most are conquered sooner and the room seen most frequently by guests as well. Finally, consider a good list of needs that will be important to satisfy ALL users of the space. Also, consider the life of the pieces and how the space might evolve as the family grows or the owners get older. NEEDS CHANGE OVER TIME!

I

I

n my years of experience, finding out how the space is currently used or intended to be used is easily as important as how your style is reflected, how your budget fits, and even those details like colors and patterns. Some considerations addressed before you start will help you avoid costly mistakes and save you time! Think about an outside set of eyes such as your space planner and/or your

best for the way it is used MOST OFTEN. ou might also FInd out in these conversations that one hates leather, or one would LOVE more storage. nce all the considerations of what you like, don’t like, and how you ALL see the room coming out are clear, it is usually time to PRIORITIZE. This might mean focusing on one or two rooms at a time. ALWAYS focus on rooms used the most FIRST. Next, consider those rooms that are seen most based on the way people enter the home. It is very uncommon that guests use the FRONT DOOR. Think about it! rioritizing might also mean taking the project in phases. It’s always better to follow a plan knowing the end result in a comfortable time than to jump the gun and overextend the budget. The goal is, after all, to be comfortable he list of needs is always a good discussion. You may be surprised by what others would like to see the room do! Also, think about the family or the age of the residents. know my current home is all on ONE LEVEL for a reason. I’m not getting any younger! The addition of outdoor space included! It’s that important to me! Or, as the kids get older, will there be sufficient seating? Do you plan to redesign the space in the next few years? Food for thought! f you FInd yourself "at ease" as you meander thru your home, the job is well done. No worries if not! It’s NOW the time to make “IT” happen! Home must be your retreat and a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE!

ets start with considerations of what you like and dont like. This is usually easy and often surprising when the feedback is openly offered by all parties involved. Ive always hated my chair" might surprise a spouse who bought matching reclining chairs against her better design sense thinking she was taking care of your need for comfort! It’s entirely common that what is comfortable to one will NOT be to the other! Matching fabrics can be used on coordinating chairs that make everyone happy! n a room involving the TELEViSION, you can bet that the direction of the seating better be focused on the TV. And they guys usually LIVE in that chair. It likely MUST face the TV. Is that how you imagined the room? onsider the need for seating on and "EVERYDAY" basis vs MAXIMUM seating. Let’s face it. Most days the home is not open to the public. Make the room
