It is April and the air is filled with happy anticipation. Easter is just around the corner, days are longer, and there is plenty of time to enjoy the Magic Island Egg Hunt and the Eggstravaganza at the Clay Center. Ringling Brothers’ Barnum & Bailey Circus comes to town to thrill families like they have for decades, but this year marks the end of the Ringling Bros. Circus, so be sure to get your tickets early. There are so many different kinds of events to enjoy in Charleston this month. Kanawha Public Library has a wide variety of interesting programs for the whole family at all of the branches. Check your local branch for details. The $90 million renovation of the Charleston Civic Center is well underway and it is very evident the CCC’s fresh, new face will be drawing even more groups and conventions to Charleston! The 7 time Grammy Award winning Christian hip-hop rapper TobyMac performs Apr. 8. Rock superstar Alice Cooper brings his show to Charleston this month, as does the country duo “Florida Georgia Line” and the popular Christian band “Casting Crowns”. The 70’s & 80’s folk rock group “Kansas” comes to the Clay Center. Up and coming acts paired with local favorites come together for “Sound Checks Special Event: The Company Stores Album Release Party”. Broadway returns
to Charleston when “Annie” is on stage April 19th. Charleston ArtWalk will be celebrating its 15th year with something special. After the free self-guided walking tour of Charleston’s shops, galleries, and businesses featuring regional art and performances, the Clay Center is hosting an After Party with “Art After Dark”! Admission is free. The Juliet Art Museum will be the location of live music, activities, a cash bar, and art. This a terrific way to end your ArtWalk! Charleston continues to be a caring community with the inaugural 5-K “Race to End Racism” and two different REACH events. REACH stands for Rape Education, Advocacy, Counseling and Healing. This month, Pies & Pints and Outback Steakhouse will both be hosting fundraising events for the project. Body builders and their fans will enjoy the Nutrition Pit NPC Mountaineer Classic”, which is a national qualifier event for men and women. There are Bikini Physique and Classic Physique competitions. Charleston’s minor league baseball team, the West Virginia Power, is a Class-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Their season begins Apr. 7. You will also notice runners, walkers, and bicyclists along the Kanawha Boulevard breaking a sweat along the riverbank.

...at the Municipal Auditorium
that would serve to disrupt the visual impact of the Art Deco monolith. With a capacity of 3,483 (2,377 on the orchestra level and 1,106 on the balcony), the Municipal Auditorium is the largest theater in West Virginia. A variety of events have graced the 65 by 85.5 foot stage over nearly 8 decades. Numerous events have taken advantage of a venue with excellent sight lines and superior acoustics. Political events held there include President Harry Truman in a campaign speech that was a live national radio broadcast on October 1, 1948. On the evening of November 7, 1939, the Municipal Auditorium hosted an inaugural performance. Held two days after the dedication ceremony, the Community Music Association brought in French violinist Zino Francescatti to play before a crowd of 4,000 patrons. Since then, the auditorium has hosted an endless variety of musical performances from around the world.
NEW YEARS EVE OF 1952.
Hundreds of revelers were preparing to descend on the Municipal Auditorium for a concert by the country music star Hank Williams. Advance ticket sales already totaled $3,500 with more seats anticipated to be sold at the door. In 2017 prices, that would be over $32,000. Just hours before the concert was to begin, Williams cancelled due to an ice storm that prevented his plane from taking off for Charleston. Hundreds of fans were disappointed to miss seeing him. Thousands more would be stunned to learn of his death in the backseat of his Cadillac near Oak Hill, West Virginia while being driven to Canton, Ohio for a New Year’s Day performance. Regardless of that dubious moment in the structure’s history, the Municipal Auditorium is an Art Deco gem in the heart of Charleston’s downtown district. Owing to a controversial start, the auditorium almost wasn’t. The proposed auditorium became a source of much controversy in the early 1930’s. The notion to spend an immense amount of money wasn’t met with a positive response from everyone. Supporters felt Charleston needed a space for performers to come to town to enhance the culture and provide quality entertainment in the area. Charleston applied for a $412,000 Public Works Administration grant in 1936. They were denied due to the lack of funds. Not to be deterred, the council applied for the same grant the following year and was subsequently awarded $250,000 for the project.
Musical performances over the years have included the Cleveland Symphony, Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, Ray Charles, Jerome Hines, Jeanette MacDonald, Luciano Pavarotti, and the Vienna Boys Choir. Broadway shows and operas staged there over the years include La Boheme, Hello Dolly (featuring Betty Grable), La Traviata (with Beverly Sills), Hair, and Grease. Then sitting Mayor John T. Copenhaver issued an edict banning all rock-n-roll shows after an especially boisterous crowd of youngsters got out of hand at a 1957 performance. But the auditorium has gone on to host Alice Cooper, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Other diverse events there include the Beni Kedem Shrine Band, Morris Harvey College basketball games in the 1950s (with the court and bleachers placed on the stage), the Ice Capades, and Shrine Circus from 1947 to 1959. Directly underneath the stage, a large basement room at one time held a police department pistol range. The Municipal Auditorium was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Next month, Looking Back visits another, albeit much smaller, Art Deco landmark…the Quarrier Diner.
The site of the building had been a concave plot of earth that filled with water when it rained, reducing it to a virtual pit of mud. Sitting on less than one acre, the auditorium’s groundbreaking took place on January 20, 1938 and construction was concluded a year later in 1939. The unsightly corner was transformed into a community landmark. Designed by local architect Alphonso Wysong, the classic styling of the “Art Deco Grande Dame” has remained a timeless fixture of architectural impact. The Wyoming Theater in Mullens, West Virginia, although far less grand, was also designed by Wysong. The Municipal Auditorium is built with steel joist construction and a steel frame resting on concrete piles. It is surrounded by a watertight subterranean retaining wall, concrete floors, metal lath and plaster ceilings, concrete and cinder block brick-faced curtain walls, and a stylistic concrete facade. The impressive curved facade has three stair tower blocks. The dominant front center block houses the grand central staircase. Rising nearly the full height of the auditorium, it is the building’s most prominent physical feature. The building name is cast in concrete making a bold, enduring statement. The auditorium is perhaps the most notable example of Art Deco architecture in Charleston. The building has experienced very few changes over the years M. ecently I moved to a new home and the opportunity to go thru the life created and stored in the old home reminded me of what I always find to be the goal in my passion for design. As you head into Spring and the traditional cleaning that accompanies the season, a perfect chance unveils itself to bring great life moments into your home.
EVERY HOME should reflect those who reside within. Many moments are captured and then stored sometimes unintentionally forever in boxes in the attic. These treasures are what make our HOME a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE.

MAKING HOME a better place to live
One very cool “find” behind the sofa in my Den was a canvas painted by a friend from 9th grade at South Charleston High School, Nancy Riffle. For a special grandparent gift, Nancy painted a scene of the once present Christmas tree field and barn that are a permanent memory of my grandparent’s farm. The farm went into contract this week so these memories are never to be repeated. This canvas was returned to me after my recent loss of 103-year-old grandmother. Next find also hidden behind the sofa and now also placed in my Home Office is a great shadow box! My mom and her brother made these when we lived out west and the contents preserve moments from our time there! My grandmother seemed to always be reading at least one book at any given moment and she always encouraged us to read by offering to let us borrow something from her collection. THE HOLLOW HILLS is one that I didn’t get returned and now I have it as one of my favorites especially because it connects me to her! In my early career, a young gentleman worked for me who was the impeccable professional. He and his twin traveled to South America one year (he was about 20 years old) and these small statues were a gift
from his trip. He unfortunately ended up suddenly in the hospital that same summer and passed away presumably from and illness developed from the trip. The statues are ever present in my world to remind me that life is precious and can never be taken for granted. A PLAYBILL from one of my first visits and shows in NYC, a snake plant that has journeyed and grown with me for many years, and a pitcher that is one of my earliest memories from Mom’s kitchen. These things matter in developing a space that makes me feel “at home”.
Lastly two of my favorites… the original WEST SIDE STORY album that I remember as one of my parents first. It played in one of those old stereo cabinets that were an actual piece of furniture. It reminds me of my dad! The upper corner chewed by one of the gang. These guys are always around in one of my best memories… the picture on the steps. They are all gone now but this one connects me to a great period in my life. The point is this. A lamp is a lamp is a lamp… unless it’s a Ball canning jar filled with my marble collection and made into a lamp like my mom did when we were rebuilding our lives at one point in this journey. BALANCE is the ability to have a comfortable inviting and inspiring home that feels good and invites others to enjoy. The personal IMPORTANT pieces are the unique things that let people know us! These are the things that really make us smile, ponder, and reflect on what it is to have a home that is a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE!

Driving an hour southeast of Charleston, along the WV Turnpike, I-64, I-77, I-79, or scenic Route 60, will bring you to Fayetteville, West Virginia. Fayetteville is a uaint town that is perfect for weekend getaways. In fact, it was named one of America’s “Coolest Small Towns” by Budget Travel Magazine. Fayetteville is known for superior outdoor adventures and the famous New River Gorge Bridge. From 1977 until 2003, this historic bridge was the longest steel span arch bridge in the world. Here are some recommendations to help inspire a weekend traveler getaway in the beautiful Appalachian mountains of West Virginia.

Two favorite West Virginia restaurants are located in Fayetteville as well Pies Pints Pi eria and Tudor’s Biscuit World. Head over to Smokey’s (opens for season in May) for a more upscale dining experience and enjoy the restaurant’s stunning views of the New River Gorge and gourmet meals.

DO NOT MISS On the third Saturday in October, the New River Gorge Bridge is open to pedestrians and those coming to BASE jump, an extreme sporting event. Hundreds will rappel, parachute, or BASE jump off of the 876 foot bridge while the crowds cheer them on. Tens of thousands of people come to Fayetteville to take part in Bridge Day’s festivities, also including crafts, food, and live entertainment.

Get up close and personal with nature in this beautiful town. Two of the most popular activities in Fayetteville are kayaking and whitewater rafting. Whether you choose to paddle the Gauley (“Beast of the East”) or New River (one of the oldest rivers in the world), you are sure to have a great time.
