Gosh, time flies when you’re having fun. It seems like just last month that temperatures were in the 90’s and everyone was sweltering. Oh wait, it WAS last month when temps were in the 90’s and we were all sweltering! Thank goodness for fall. November in Charley West is nearly perfect. Beautiful sunny days, gorgeous autumn foliage, and sweater weather makes all the action in town even more appealing. November always brings the Capital City Art and Craft Show to the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center (CC&CC), the Mac ‘N Cheese Cookoff is at Capitol Market, and various scholastic competitions bring thousands of people into town. This month, America’s hottest game show “Family Feud” is auditioning families from Charleston! Imagine how much it could be having the host, Steve Harvey, a native West Virginian himself, poking fun at YOUR family! Those auditions will be held Nov. 2 & 3 at the CC&CC. The Municipal Auditorium will be the venue for the “Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Tour”. 2019 is the 35th anniversary of this annual Christmas concert tour, making it the longest running consecutive concert tour in the entertainment industry! Something brand new for Charleston is “Let’s Roam” Charleston Scavenger

Looking Back
...at TOP O ROCK
When an architectural wonder is demolished, people mourn. Such was the case when Charleston’s Top O Rock was razed in September of 2015. Built as his office and private residence in 1966 by local architect Henry Elden, Top O Rock was situated on over 4 wooded acres. The site overlooks downtown Charleston and part of Kanawha City and was once an old rock quarry. Rock quarried from the land supplied stone for the construction of the original South Side Bridge. Constructed with 90 tons of custom-fabricated West Virginia steel, glass and 150,000 pounds of concrete, Top O Rock had 10,000 square feet of floor space. Often called the ‘glass house’ it also boasted nearly 10,000 square feet of glass walls, allowing panoramic views of the woods and valley. Four thousand square feet was living space and the remaining 6,000 square feet was a large cylindrical studio. The heating of Top O Rock was provided by fin tube radiation throughout the building at each floor at all window lines. In the manner of Frank Lloyd Wright, Elden’s home encompassed an enormous rock and mature tree within the structure. The floor plan was curved, composed of many steel beams fabricated locally by West Virginia Steel. Elden’s engineering knowledge of steel usage gained him national recognition. Top O Rock was often referred to as the local “Fallingwater,” Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic home built in harmony with the surrounding land. The six-story home was featured

in Parade magazine, as well as in a Home and Gardens television special. Henry Elden was honored by the American Steel Institute for his design of Top O Rock. After graduating with degree in Architecture from Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, Henry Elden moved to Charleston where he took his first job with Kuhn Construction. He was their estimator, calculating how much it would cost to build a project. Henry left Kuhn Construction, taking a job with celebrated Charleston architect Walter Martens who designed the Governor’s Mansion on the Boulevard. Elden left Marten’s firm and started working for Union Carbide in the structural division, designing three-dimensional steel grid structure to hold piping for the chemical productions at the plant. After the Pearl Harbor attack, Henry enlisted as an officer in the Navy. He served several years with the Navy fleet in the Pacific Ocean near the Philippines. Elden built a successful architectural firm in Charleston that gathered national attention, awards, and publication, many centered around his home and studio, Top O Rock. His firm designed over 800 structures, including the Chief Logan State Park Lodge, the firing range for the WV State Police Academy, Calvary Methodist Church in Wheeling, the Vining Library at WV Institute of Technology at Montgomery, and the Martinsburg Regional Jail, first multi-country jail built in the nation. Several years after Elden’s death in 2009, Top O Rock was sold. Years of being unoccupied resulted in vandalism to the point that demolishing the home seemed a likely option. The property was one of the first two properties to be listed on Preservation Alliance of West Virginia’s Buildings At Risk Register, a group created to draw attention to historical buildings at risk of demolition. An eleventh-hour attempt to save the structure was mounted by WV GreenWorks and the Kanawha Valley Historical & Preservation Society, with the permission of the property owners. Preservation experts agreed that Top O Rock was an historically significant example of organic architecture. Like many mid-century modernist structures, Top O Rock failed in the quest to be preserved for future generations. Truly Charleston’s loss. Next month Looking Back remembers the Kearse Theater.

vistas in more than 200,000 acres. It is one of the most beautiful National Parks in the Eastern United States. Do you feel like taking a short hike? Massanutten’s Storybrook Trail is famous for the fantastic views and photo-ops along a 3 feet wide stroller and wheelchair accessible path. (see main picture above) Another great nature escape is the Luray Hawksbill Greenway, a natural habitat for fish, wildlife, butterflies, fish, with a two-mile handicap accessible paved walking/biking trail. Bring a picnic and enjoy the picturesque setting as your backdrop amidst the picnic tables or park benches.
WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK IN LURAY, VA
Luray is the “Cabin Capital of Virginia.” While there are dozens of cabins to choose from, I loved staying at Somerset in Shenandoah Woods. The cabin slept 16 and featured a 12-foot dining table, lower-level home theater, pool table, four king bedrooms (with private baths), covered front porch with rockers, deck, and screened hot tub deck. The property is divine!
Luray has some tasty places to dine. Visit Triple Crown BBQ for your favorite smoked chicken, pulled pork, ribs, and smoked sausage. Gathering Ground Patisserie serves breakfast and lunch in a trendy espresso bar setting. The coffee is topnotch, as are the delicious breakfast options such as quiche, avocado toast, omelets, and breakfast wraps. Lunch includes salads, gourmet sandwiches, and fried baskets, but save room for Gathering Ground’s luscious homemade cakes and pies. They’re some of the best I’ve ever eaten! The Mimslyn Inn. Go shopping on the darling Main Street in downtown Luray, offering a handful of boutiques and antique stores.
Enjoy dining at Hawksbill Diner, serving Southern eats in a comfortable setting. Drop by The Valley Cork Wine Bar in downtown Luray Thursday through Sunday for a smooth glass of wine from an international selection, gourmet flatbread, tapas, or charcuterie board.

Cooter’s in Luray is a fun stop for Dukes of Hazard fans. See the General Lee, Cooter’s Tow Truck, Boss Hogg’s Caddy, and movie/tv memorabilia in this unique attraction. There is also a cafe, ice cream bar, and large gift shop to browse through. Meet Cooter himself (Ben Jones) on Saturdays and enjoy live music several nights of the week.
At The Speakeasy (inside the Mimslyn Inn), treat yourself to a fine-dining quality meal in a comfortable lounge-like setting with live music. I recommend the Cheese Fondue (with pretzels, apples, and bread) for an appetizer and Pork Chops for dinner. Dan’s Steakhouse is a local favorite for upscale dining with a menu offering a wide variety of entrées.
