Ahhhh, the holidays! Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away and Christmas is never too far behind. This time of year is so much fun in Charleston. We have many traditions to look forward to. The Charleston Civic Center is the venue for the 50th annual Capital City Arts & Crafts Show. The weekend before Thanksgiving is when thousands pour into the Civic Center to shop for beautiful hand-crafted works of art and amazing food. It is a great place to Christmas shop for someone who seems to have everything! The West Virginia International Film Festival is holding their 34th annual event in the new Underground Cinema, below Taylor Books. This is a very welcome addition to Capitol Street! Charleston is also home to lots of terrific local talent. Bridge Road Bistro and Blue Grass Kitchen have live music several nights of the week. There is even Open Mic Night at Blue Grass Kitchen each Wednesday evening. This event is open to all ages. The annual “Guys Night Out” is the Kanawha Valley’s biggest WVU tailgate party. The event raises funds and awareness for the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter for Homeless Women & Families. Hundreds of men in the community come to South Charleston’s Oakes Field 2 hours before the WVU Mountaineer’s football game and this year WVU plays the Kansas State Wildcats. The guys feast on roast pig and wings, while watching the game on flat screens and listening to Tony Caridi. If you like to cook, or if you like to eat, you can’t miss the Foodie Feast at Paterno’s at the Park! This is not your mother’s Thanksgiving dinner.
Enjoy a Sunday brunch with Mimosas & Bloody Marys. This event also benefits the YWCA Sojourner’s Shelter. The monthly Downtown ArtWalk, which normally takes place on the third Thursday of each month changes it up in November. This month’s free self-guided tour will take place on Black Friday. What a fun way to end a day of Black Friday shopping! The annual Christmas Parade is always the first Saturday in December. Everyone enjoys this tradition of the holiday season. Bring the kids downtown for the bands, fun, and of course, Santa Claus! Then, that same evening, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra will perform their annual “Home for the Holidays” concert. Come to the Clay Center to enjoy the tradition of holiday music and get to know the new WVSO Maestro Lawrence Loh! Charleston’s Kanawha Public Library’s Main Branch on Capitol Street is offering several activities for all ages. Teens can learn how to turn ramen noodles into a healthy meal, there will be a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program for the whole family, and little ones will enjoy the Picture Book Celebration. ...at Yeager Airport
Once upon a time, the Charleston Airport wasn’t in Charleston at all, but rather six miles downriver. Located in Institute, Wertz Field was purchased by the City of Charleston in 1929. By 1930, Charleston didn’t have the funds to develop and operate the field, so a group of businessmen formed West Virginia Airways, Inc. They operated Wertz Field for twelve years. By 1937, bigger planes were being put into service by various airlines, and Wertz Field was beginning to show signs of being inadequate to handle the larger airplanes. When American Airlines notified the City of Charleston it was going to discontinue service into Charleston, flight enthusiasts pleaded with the airline to continue service, but using the smaller DC-2 planes. At Wertz Field, the runway approaches were blocked by the erection of the government’s synthetic rubber plants. During the war years, the plants were the nation’s largest producer of synthetic rubber. There was no other room for expansion. On May 12, 1942, after 12 years of operation, Wertz Field was closed, leaving Charleston with no airport. The threat of possibly losing air service was the eye opener for city officials, and a committee was appointed to search for a suitable location to construct a new, larger airport. The closure of Wertz Field brought pressure on the committee to find suitable land. The committee spent the balance of 1938 searching on foot, by car and by pouring over topographical maps for a new airport location. The conclusion was this: there was simply no suitable land mass on the valley floor to accommodate an airport. The committee did bring an alternate solution to the table: build on the hilltops. An area known as Coonskin Ridge was designated as the most suitable spot. Potential funding sources were sought. The City of Charleston wasn’t able to provide adequate funding, so the County Court of Kanawha County agreed the county would take over the project from the city. The County Court proceeded, through both negotiation and condemnation, to gain the title to the Coonskin Ridge area. The Coonskin Ridge area was nearly 800 acres, with 280 acres of usable land. Ground was broken on October 14, 1944, and the dedication of the new facility was November 3, 1947. President Truman’s plane, the “Independence,” landed M. at the airport for the ceremony, which was attended by the presidents of all the participating airlines. The event was attended by an estimated ten thousand people, who braved driving rain to see the ribbon cutting. The Charleston and Stonewall Jackson high school bands played The Star Spangled Banner, an invocation was pronounced by Dr. Leonard Riggleman president of Morris Harvey college. Gov. Meadows said in his speech during the ceremony, “The very heart of West Virginia is now open to the people of the world. We have become a neighbor and a potential market place to every part of the world.” The first commercial services began December 1, with ten daily scheduled flights. Earlier in the same year, the 167th Fighter Squadron of the West Virginia National Guard, was established and activated. The actual construction of the airport was studied by groups from all around the globe. The earth moving processes employed utilized the most modern techniques. Nine million cubic yards of dirt was moved during the course of ground preparation. The grading alone cost $4.5 million, or 34 times the cost of the site itself. In all, 360 acres of land was cleared. A pipeline was installed up the mountain that carried the 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel needed every day to run over 200 pieces of equipment. The access road curling up the mountainside to Kanawha Airport was constructed by the State Road Commission. Over 300,000 cubic yards of earth was removed in the grading of the road. The airport opened as Kanawha Airport in 1947, and was renamed in 1985, honoring then-Brigadier General Chuck Yeager, a native of Lincoln County who piloted the world’s first supersonic flight. The first terminal was built in 1950, a mid-century design by Tucker & Silling. A terminal renovation by L. Robert Kimball and Associates was completed in 2001. Today, Yeager remains a vital component to the Kanawha Valley and surrounding area transportation network. Next month we will look back at Charleston’s fire station history.

Driving a little over six hours East of Charleston brings you to Talbot County, Maryland. I realize this is a bit further than destinations we usually feature, but I promise it’s worth the extra time. Talbot County is comprised of four towns: Easton, St. Michaels, Oxford, and Tilghman Island. It is part of the Chesapeake Bay region with many miles of photogenic shoreline. While Tilghman Island offers impeccable scenery (and sometimes eagles!) and Oxford, a small waterside town with under 1000 people, has lovely Victorian architecture, the majority of things to do are in Easton and St. Michaels.

Grab a quick lunch at Krave Courtyard where the Toasted Walnut Chicken Salad (with grapes and green onions) and Tuna Salad are exceptional. A second choice would be Hunter’s Tavern, a classy restaurant at the Tidewater Inn with a great patio. Both the Deep Dish Quiche and Eastern Shore Crab Roll are lip-smacking good.
WHAT TO DO ON YOUR WEEKEND TRIP Awful Arthur’s Seafood Company, which makes the best-blackened tuna bites (with wasabi cream sauce), is perfect for lunch or dinner. Foxy’s Harbor Grille offers outdoor riverfront dining with a plethora of craft beers and amazing Ahi Poke. A romantic eatery, Scossa Restaurant, has toothsome Potato Gnocchi with Veal Ragu and Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli with butter and sage sauce.
Since you are on the Eastern seaboard, you must visit the Hooper Strait Lighthouse, built in 1879. Also, stop by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, the #1 rated attraction in the area. It includes 18 waterfront acres with hands-on activities and exhibits. Guided tours from 90 minutes to four hours are available as well as boat rides. If wineries are of interest, visit Triple Creek Winery in Cordova, Maryland, 15 minutes from Easton. The tasting room is darling and the wines are fine. Lyon Distilling Company is another adult stop for tasting small batch spirits including rum, vodka, and gin.

You will have the best crab of your life in Talbot County, so crabbing would be a fun thing to try if you haven’t already. Other outdoor activities include kayaking, canoeing, sailing, and taking a yacht cruise. Both Easton and St. Michaels are big in the art scene so galleries are plentiful and worthwhile. A few of my favorites are Grafton Gallery, Dragonfly Galleria, and Academy Art Museum. Shoppers are going to rejoice in the selection of small boutiques with unique items. Recommended shops are The
Talbot County is rich in history, so visiting the Wye Grist Mill, the oldest continually operating grist mill in the country (325+ years!), is necessary. Wye, a historic landmark, provided flour to feed George Washington’s troops at Valley Forge.
TALBOT COUNTY, MARYLAND: A PLACE WORTH SEEING Stunning scenery, the freshest seafood, and interesting culture make up Talbot County, Maryland. I was blown away by the coastal views and terrific sunsets. It truly made me feel relaxed like no other place; a large-scale coastal seaside Dicken’s village of sorts.
