Happening Around Town

The most exciting news in Charleston this month is the completion of the $100 million up-grade and renovation of the former Charleston Civic Center. It has been renamed the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center, the CCCC. Now that the doors are open and events are taking place, it’s obvious this is a major opportunity for Charleston to offer more in terms of entertainment, conventions, and large sporting events. Conventions are already being scheduled for as far ahead as 2021. The coliseum seats 13,500 with a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system. There is a 25,000 sq. ft. ballroom with a seating capacity of 1,500. There are even more improvements; in fact, too many to mention here! The CCCC grand-opening is just in time for the 51st Annual Capital City Art & Craft Show. This craft fair, sponsored by the Kanawha City Lions Club, is a fundraiser that, so far, has donated $1.5 million to state and local charities, as well as providing more than $100,000 in eyeglasses for local residents. There are amazing crafts and art by local artisans and many vendors offering specialty food items. There will also be book signings by regional authors. This always takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving and for many locals, it is the start of their Christmas shopping!

Nov. 1:

The Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences has begun offering a curator led tour of the Juliet Art Museum every Friday at noon. The tour will change weekly and is free with admission to the Clay Center. The Clay Center is also the venue for a special concert this month. Popular singersongwriter Jason Mraz comes to the Clay Center on Nov. 25. The show choirs of Kanawha County High Schools will be offering a sample of their talent as they debut shortened versions of their competition shows. This is always a lot of fun with loads of amazing local talent. Speaking of local talent, area bars and restaurants offer weekly performances by musicians who call Charleston “home”. The Bluegrass Kitchen offers entertainment on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. “Wonderful Women’s Wednesdays” are now at the Bridge Road Bistro each week. There are even free salsa dancing lessons every Thursday at Vino’s Bar & Grill! And you don’t need a partner! As the temperature drops and the holidays are just around the corner, Charleston is a great town in which to cozy up and relax with terrific restaurants, exciting concerts, art exhibits, and a brand-new coliseum to enjoy! We have so much to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

By: M. Lynne Squires

...at Morris Harvey College

Who was Morris Harvey, anyway? A Raleigh County native, raised in Fayette County, he fought for the Confederacy with Thurmond’s Rangers during the Civil War. Rarely speaking of his stint in the war, he served Fayette County as county jailer, and later sheriff. His investments in land led to his amassing great wealth. A land grant purchased from the state of West Virginia saw his investment of $20 for 1000 acres along the New River burgeon into wealth and spurred his philanthropist acts. A devout Methodist, Harvey gave generously to the Barboursville Seminary College, established in 1888. Barboursville was the county seat, but when it moved to Huntington, the old courthouse buildings became the campus for the seminary. Harvey’s substantial monetary gift alleviated the college’s financial struggles. As a result, the name of the school was changed to Morris Harvey College in 1901. His continuing support enabled additional building and renovation projects. A bequest from his wife’s estate several years later continued her husbands work at the school. The years encompassing the Depression Era saw the college flounder. Enrollment waxed and waned. Leonard Riggleman, a graduate of the college, became the Vice-President in 1930, and the 19th President in 1931. Under his leadership, he oversaw the move of the college from Barboursville to Charleston. The college leaders felt the school was too close to Marshall College, so in 1935 moved to downtown Charleston. There it became affiliated with the Kanawha Junior College and the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music. In 1940, Riggleman navigated the break for independence from the Methodist Church. In 1947, the school moved to its present home on the south bank of the Kanawha River. The first buildings to be constructed on the site were a cafeteria and a gymnasium. The main structure on campus was constructed in 1950 and was subsequently named Riggleman Hall. The building was designed as M. Lynne Squires is the author of the award-winning book Letters to My Son - Reflections of Appalachia at Mid-Century, as well as Mid-Century Recipes from Cocktails to Comfort Food, and Writers on Writing. Visit www.mlynne.com.

the east wing to a larger structure that never saw the central and western wings built. Riggleman Hall was designed and built by Meanor, Greife & Dailey in the Art Deco and Late Medera style. The foundation is concrete with block and brick walls. It houses both administrative offices and classrooms. The Vietnam War and college deferment of the early 1970’s once again found Morris Harvey College experiencing hard times. In 1975, the school offered itself to the state, but the state declined the gift. Although he had retired in 1964, Leonard Riggleman successfully led the battle for the school to remain outside the purview of state ownership. In 1978, under the leadership of Thomas Voss, the curriculum was restructured, staffing changes were made, and Morris Harvey changed its name to the University of Charleston. All these changes succeeded in saving the school from yet another financial crisis in its history. In the years since, The University of Charleston has grown in many areas. Among them, the football program was revived after a 47-year hiatus. The new pharmacy program graduated its first class in 2010. New buildings grace the campus, including three residence halls and a parking garage. Fifty years after Morris Harvey came to occupy its current location, a new structure was dedicated in 1997. The Clay Tower added a striking presence to the Charleston skyline. Riggleman Hall and the surrounding riverfront grounds continue to this day to host weddings, receptions, symphony concerts, and other events. Next month, Looking Back has an eye on the State Capitol Complex.

DUKE JORDAN REALTORÂŽ 304.415.0607 Duke@bhhsger.com www.bhhsger.com As we enter into this 2018 Holiday Season, we all need to realize that we have much for which to be thankful. Although we all may be on different places in life's journey, we need to remember to lend a helping hand when we can. Many times I've said, even though you're not on top just yet, doesn't mean you can't help someone else make it to the top with a kind word or action. Remember also, it was your family who took care of you as a child, and some as adults. There is nothing more important than a family's love. So this year get out there and mend those relationships. It's been so long, in some cases, that some of you have forgotten the reason you stopped talking to that friend or family in the first place. In a lot of cases, family doesn't have to be blood related. So let me just say, as I continue to try and bring in more new businesses to our State, I really do appreciate those who have given me an opportunity to serve them as their REALTOR. Over the last couple of years, I've concentrated more on the commercial and high-end residential, however I will sell anything if you're willing to price at fair market value. We all need to realize we have to come together and do our part, if we are to see a better West Virginia. When I talk to out-of-state buyers, I constantly tell them we are so much more than just "Wild & Wonderful." When it comes to politics or race relations, we do not fit into anyone's mold or national study. Now of course, they've got it right, when it comes to the drug epidemic. This is one subject about which I am most passionate. I saw lots of things before retiring as a Police Lieutenant. I just never thought I'd see parts of our State being ravaged by pill mill greed and addicts. I believe we are finally getting the right balance of services and enforcement to turn that around. Once again, it takes everyone doing there part, not just one particular group of people. One way or another, we are all affected directly or indirectly. So at the end of the day, I want to again say thank you for your real estate business, however, I'd really like to us spread more love towards one another. We have to learn, in some cases to respectfully agree to disagree. Respect is also something that I feel has been thrown to the wayside, and lost along the way. Folks we have to get back to the basics on which our fathers and grandparents grew up. If you didn't work, you didn't eat. If you disrespect your teachers, elderly, police, or those in authority, you really were in for it when you got home, and sometimes from the neighbors first. Children didn't talk back to any adult, but most adults didn't argue in front of kids. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you...Golden Rule. We realized our freedom was paid with a price of a veteran's life and service. Please and a thank you were common. Your word and a hand shake meant something. We opened doors for each other, both on buildings, and in life. So yes, my holiday advertisement has turned into words, I think just needed to be said. In closing, from this, simply take a couple of things. Show more love towards one another, communicate more, and of course call me if you need me. Have a great day.

Transfer to a medium bowl and set over the ice bath. Stir to cool. • Add pumpkin, vanilla, spices, and salt to the egg mixture. Stir 1 tablespoon rum and 1 teaspoon gelatin together in a small bowl. Heat the remaining tablespoon rum, and stir in to the gelatin mixture until dissolved. Gently whisk into the pumpkin mixture. Beat 1/2 cup cream to stiff peaks, and fold into pumpkin mixture. Pour into a shallow dish, cover and chill until cold and thick enough to fall from a spoon in heavy dollops -- about 8 hours or up to overnight. • Beat the remaining cream and sugar to stiff peaks. Alternately layer the pumpkin mousse and whipped cream in a glass serving dish. Sprinkle the chocolate shavings between top two layers. Serve chilled.

Preheat the oven to 350. Grease a 13 x 9 pan.

Driving two hours 45 minutes slightly Northwest of Charleston brings you to Columbus, Ohio, arguably one of the coolest places to visit in the state. Columbus is home to the huge Ohio State University campus with over 60,000 students, an unbridled love for college football, and impressive art galleries. The city’s food scene and attractions are spectacular and best of all, the retail offerings have been attracting West Virginians for years now. There will not be a dull moment during your visit to this fashionable metropolitan city.

WHAT TO DO IN COLUMBUS The better question for this Midwest city is, what isn’t there to do in Columbus? Start with the family-friendly and always favorite, COSI. This 320,000 square feet science museum has dozens of exhibits to educate and entertain based on life, gadgets, weather, progress, space, ocean, and more. Columbus is a dream for those seeking retail therapy. Peruse the 240 stores at Easton Town Center, including Nordstrom, Macy’s, Apple, American Girl, and L.L. Bean. Easton is also an entertainment megaplex with the Funny Bone Comedy Club, a 30-screen AMC theatre, and World of Beer. Head to Columbus’ premier indoor mall, The Polaris Fashion Place, with stores such as Sak’s Fifth Avenue, Disney Store, and Brooks Brothers. A new and interesting exhibit at COSI is about things we use in our daily life and the carbon footprint the they leave. Photo by Taylor Pittman Hardy.

Another great local spot is Katalina’s, known for eclectic breakfast offerings and fantastic soups in a 100-year old gas station turned restaurant. The best selling item is the awardwinning Famous Ma atlan Slow-Roasted Pork and Egg: slow-roasted pork, cheese, avocado, roasted red peppers, and aioli on ld-World toasted bread. riginal Pancake Balls are another house specialty. rder them filled with Nutella, pumpkin apple butter, or dulce de leche and dip the tasty balls in bourbon barrelaged maple syrup.
